Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a certain late August feel to them, and now it is time for you to post until cows come home - they'll be home Come September, from the film of the same name.
-
And the word of the day is: PEREGRINATION!
-
I guess I'll log off from the Internet and plug back into the wireless device. If I'm not back posting, I won't be on until the morning, after I've talked to Apple.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO THOSE BIRTHDATE TWINS DRS JOSE AND JRAND (#?)
HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY

A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR JRAND58!! ;D

A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR JOSE!! ;D

"Come September" theme tune was a surprise hit here in OZ for Santo & Johnny. Darin's "Multiplication" was his biggest hit since Dream Lover!
You needed to know that.
-
I plugged back into the wireless to no avail - no signal at all. Then I shut down the computer and unplugged the wireless device, then plugged it back in and started the computer. This time I got my bars back and was on my "network." However, it still wouldn't connect, so I unplugged the modem and then plugged that back in and that seems to have done the trick, as here I am, posting.
-
I suppose that means I won't have to call Apple in the morning.
-
Good news, BK.

TOTD:
I suspect it may have been not only a "greener world" but that there would have been less hate!
Yes I'm an outsider but President Bush's administration has created so much Anti USA feeling and in some ways has divided the world by unifying!
Perhaps it has been the Oil Power people who have been pulling the strings but the Administration allowed it to happen.
Who really knows about alternative presents and futures?

Topic of the Day: I can't remember if someone here posted this, but when Dubya took office, gas was $1.35 a gallon. I just finished watching "Who Killed the Electric Car? (http://www.amazon.com/Who-Killed-Electric-Martin-Sheen/dp/B000I5Y8FU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1219735495&sr=1-1)" Like Tomovoz, I think that if Gore had been elected, we would be "greener" across the country. One thing talked about in the documentary was a mandate by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to have 10% of all cars sold in California be zero emissions cars by a certain date. Because of GM and other companies and people, that mandate was eliminated.
Would-a, should-a, could-a. :-\

Iowa Governor Slams Kosher Slaughterhouse for Alleged Child Labor
DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Gov. Chet Culver denounced a kosher meatpacking plant accused of child labor violations, echoing Upton Sinclair's disdain of cruelty toward immigrants.
The governor wrote a guest column in the Des Moines Sunday Register that criticized Agriprocessors Inc. in Postville for allegedly employing dozens of underage workers and taking advantage of a failed federal immigration system.
"In doing so, this company has fallen far short of meeting the high business standards that Iowans expect," Culver said.

And what is wrong with this "news" item?
Former Will + Grace star Debra Messing has filmed a tribute to Carol Channing for the second season of her hit new show Starter Wife. Messing recreates the funny lady's famous Hello Dolly routine from A Star Is Born, wearing a copycat red gown outfit, a Channing wig and replicas of the stage and screen great's famous eyelashes for the song-and-dance skit with her castmates.
There is more, but who cares? Doesn't anyone proof these things???
-
DR MICHAEL S - that news item just sent me over the edge.

Thanks to DRs GINNY, GEORGE, SINGDAW, derBRUCER, and TOMovOZ for the greetings.
I shall be working today, so I won't be able to see my wishes until this evening.

It is currently taking me 4+ minutes to post or to refresh the page. I'm logging off and will try again later.
But I wanted to report that the early bird gets the worm! Despite NO copies being available on Amazon yesterday, I snagged two used books today from Amazon MarketPlace - for what I thought were quite reasonable prices. I've been looking for these for some time: the book on Meredith Willson (But He Doesn't Know the Territory) and Robert Russell Bennett's book on orchestration, Musically Speaking. :D :D :D

DR JoseSPiano - I'm sorry that I won't be able to meet up with your scheduled walking/eating itinerary today, but know that I am thinking of you! :)

TOD: Since I know most campaign wishes die in term, I don't know how much of Al Gore's interests would have been realized; I don't think gas would be at its high rates for the past 4 years, and I believe that 9/11 would still have occurred. I like to hope the response wouldn't have been the lies and actions taken by the current administration.

Tom,
You are not the first person I have heard that from. Over the last several years I have met students who come into the library from a number of countries who have said basically the same thing about Bush. As one young man from Nigeria said, "The americans are decent but you have an idiot for a president that has no repsect for others" that is a direct quote from Dayo...
He has done more to antagonize relations than build him. Gore may not have been perfect but at least he did not tick off the world while he was VP.
I truly think with both Bush and Cheney in office and their connections to Oil has led to soem of the issues we are seeing. Yes demand is rising but they saw dollar signs and a way to feather their pockets and the heck with everyone else.

If Gore had been president I don't believe we would have gone to war with Iraq, since the rest of the world was so against the idea. And my nephew wouldn't have been hit in the face with a rocket-propelled granade. He's doing fine now. Here's a little clip of him at culinary school in Texas.

He had made the brilliant decision of joining the Marines just months before Bush declared war. It's too bad he didn't opt for culinary school back then. So, where exactly WERE all those WMDs?

Today's posts should be interesting!
-
I think the one thing I would feel differently about the Presidency if Al Gore had gotten in would be in the matter of TRUST.
I don't trust a single thing either our President or Vice-President says. I don't think much of the world does either.
-
TOD
9/11 still would have happened. Katrina still would have happened. And governmental bureaucracy and misinformation would still have happened in both cases, so we'd still be stuck in a lot of the mire we're in today.
Gore would have been seen as the third term of the Clintons, and would have only been president for four years. The divisiveness of party politics would still be going on.
-
Nothing on TV for me tonight, so I can use the time to catch up with stuff that's been sitting on the DVR for days: MONK from Friday, LAW & ORDER: CI from Sunday, MAD MEN in HD, and I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY from HBO-HD.
I'll likely watch either MONK or MAD MEN while I cook and eat lunch.

I agree Jeanne, Gore was not perfect but we would not have some pf the problems and distrust we have today.. I still think 9/11 would have happen but what happened after Katrina is what bothered me. The government's reaction to that disaster was an insult to humanity and an embarrassment for a nation built on the principles of equality and human rights.
I have never liked nor trusted bush. In an interview he did sometime before he was elected in 2000, he commented that he wanted to finish what his father started....
To me that was a definite clue not to vote for him. I am not a fan of his father either.
I do find it amusing that several schools in TExas turned down housing his papers after he is out of office
He has destroyed our reputation in the world. The economy is in shambles. Sad in many ways... Granted Clinton was not perfect but at least the economy had a surplus, gas was under 2 bucks and we had some respect in the world.

Jose, your youthful exbuerance fooled Anthony. He thought you were in your 20s, perhaps 29 turning 30. He was quite surprised to hear you are now 40!

IMHO, I think WMD was a guise of Bush to sell the war to the American people. There was never any evidence of it. His guile at what others were saying has led to the decline of the US and sense of respect we once had.

The problem with recounts is that they almost never result in a change of the results. And, when they do, it is in the small elections, for a city council seat. Yes, such a change did happen in Long Beach back when der B and I lived there, but this was a case where the difference between the two candidates was less than twenty votes. That was quite unusual, and not something that happens on the national scale.
What many people don't realize (or remember) is how divisive Gore appeared to be to approximately half the nation, by trying to "steal" the election because of the "hanging chads." Just as half of the nation was against Bush winning the election, on what appeared to be electoral fraud, the other half of the nation was equally against Gore for the exact same reasons.
Hopefully, we won't have a repeat of that come November, and one or the other candidate will have a decisive victory (or, at least, the candidate that does not win will be gracious enough to lend his full support to the winner).
As it happens, I like both Obama and McCain, and will be pleased to see either one of them in the White House. That's something I haven't been able to say for quite some time. Generally, I haven't liked any of the candidates for President in the elections of the past two decades, and have been stuck for far too long with voting for the lesser of two evils. For me, this is the best election season that we've had in a long time.

I got rid of the tv.

Another thought that comes to mind if Gore was in office
I wonder if the Congress would have remained republican or become democrat under his lead?
I would not have been surprised if certain elements of the conservative front continued to take potshots at Gore and the Clintons like they did during Clinton's terms.

IMHO, I think WMD was a guise of Bush to sell the war to the American people. There was never any evidence of it. His guile at what others were saying has led to the decline of the US and sense of respect we once had.
I disagree. The intelligence reports that we were getting pointed to the existance of the WMD, and our government, led by Bush, truly believed the intelligence reports.
As I understand it, the information was faulty. Those who were supposed to be creating the WMD, the scientists and military men of Iraq, were telling their own bureaucracies that they had them in order to cover their own asses, and the bureaucrats in Iraq believed the stories because it made them look good to Saddam Hussein. Our intelligence was based on these false reports. By the time we discovered the truth, we'd already invaded and Hussein was deposed.
In other words, it wasn't that Bush and company were corrupt, it's that they weren't anywhere near as smart as they thought themselves to be.
The moral of which is, be careful the lies you tell, because people tend to believe them.
-
The TOD and DR SWW's post above sent me back to the news analysis done post-2000 election by the major media outlets.
They studied and ran the Florida ballots by various scenarios. Even if the US Supreme Court had allowed the full statewide recount to run to its conclusion, Bush still would have won - albeit by a very slim majority.
Changing the counting standards [hanging chad, dimples, over & under votes, etc.] would have resulted in various scenarios, some favoring Bush and some Gore, again by a very very small majority [200 to 300 votes].
What did the Democrats in was the butterfly ballot in Palm Beach County. Which was designed by a Democrat and approved by the Democratic Committee there. Thousands of votes for Gore were thrown out because another candidate had also been selected, due to the flawed design. Because of what happened nationally, this made the decisive difference and determined the outcome of the election.
This bypasses the theoretical discussion of how many minority voters were disenfanchised by the local GOP hacks "scrubbing" the voting rolls, as well as the whole absentee ballot brouhahah.
-
SWW, it has been an interesting election season thus far...
-
I'm heading down now to check the mail (if it hasn't been washed away) and then start thinking about what's for lunch.

Just as half of the nation was against Bush winning the election, on what appeared to be electoral fraud, the other half of the nation was equally against Gore for the exact same reasons.
I don't remember it that way. I remember the way it unfolded. What I know is that Gore won the popular vote nationwide. I also know that Florida refused to acknowledge any possibility that something illegal had occurred.
I'm not judging. But Gore certainly had my support for contesting the outcome in Florida where the polls all indicated a commanding lead in the Palm Beach area. When your brother is governor of the state, it certainly looks more suspicious that something hinky was going on. I'm convinced it was.
It's the GOP spin, of course, that paints Gore as having also tried to steal the election -- the one that he WON in popular votes, that is.

I very much enjoyed -- if that is appropriate to the story line -- last night's "The Closer." I really enjoy it when key characters get great moments in the sun. That closing scene was heartbreaking.
-
I found "Saving Grace" very unsettling as the character called Ham continued on his path to self-destruction.
I don't really "get" this relationship he has with Grace that is more than "partner" but less than "lover". The actor is fantastic and he presented a tortured, really messed-up portrait of a guy on the verge of something tragic.
It's a long time until March to see how it resolves itself. But the writers may just go off in a different direction.

I got my fill of Gilligan decades ago.
-
It rained during the night, and it is still cloudy and humid. A lovely day.
-
And the word of the day is: PEREGRINATION!
We've had this word already because I remembering telling my insane lady with the bagful of tapes who turned out to be a baby photographer peregrinating story. :)
-
Oooh, birthdays, both of them J's! Happy Days (a BK reference).
-
I'm sure we've had several words before - it's impossible for me to remember and I just do the ones that don't seem familiar. I think we've been doing these for a good two years now.
-
BK needs a list.
Oh, he needs a little list
Yes, he needs a little list
And the words will sure be twist
Oh, yes, they will be twist!
-
I just discovered an incredible taste sensation - eating dark chocolate M & Ms while drinking orange flavored La Croix sparkling water - yumm!
-
Off to learn about grant-readiness.
Bye for now!
-
Der B wants on.
And I want to get to the Farmer's Market before too terribly long.
(That's a hint, for when der B gets caught up, of course. ;D)
-
I guess I shall endeavor to jog.
-
Do one?
8)
One don't! ;D
-
I know not about the TOD, but ask me about Gilligan's Island and I will have an opinion.
-
Thanks to all for the birthday wishes, GINNY, JEANNE, JENNIFER, DAKOTACELT, MBARNUM, RP, MATTH, SWW, DR JOSE of course, and I hope I didn't miss anyone.
DR JEANNE let me know how your reading goes.
So far so good for me today. I am wearing my disco shirt and have only have positive people to talk to.
I also found a friend on Face Book who is now in NYC, not sure if he is still doing theatre, but he would be fun to hang out with for the HHW crowd.
I will find out what he is up to in a day or so.
Adam Chandler.
-
Good Afternoon!
Greetings from SoHo!

I know not about the TOD, but ask me about Gilligan's Island and I will have an opinion.
Your natural ignorance, DR MBarnum, is amazing and your defense of it awe-inspiring!

Good Afternoon!
Greetings from SoHo!
And so begins this episode of "The pianist That Ate Manhattan!"
Happy Birthday and Happy Trail Mix to You!

Thank you to everyone for your well-wishes for my nephew. He hasn't had much plastic surgery done yet. Since he's relying on the VA, it's been difficult for him to get appointments and such. And I think he's been living with that face for so long, he's gotten used to it, so he's not pushing too hard. The majority of the work he's had done has been on his jaw and teeth (he lost 6 teeth). They had to rebuild part of his jaw from bone taken from his hip and he had false teeth screwed into the new piece of jaw.
By the way, the Florida recount was eventually finished after everything was over. It turns out that the only way Gore could have won was if all the over-votes (ballots with both Bush and Gore's names punched) were counted for Gore, which obviously wouldn't have been right either. So, the only way to undo the damage done by the butterfly Florida ballot was to have a re-vote. But legally, the entire country has to vote on the same day, so the entire country would have had to vote again. So, here's my question to you all: Considering how much people don't like to vote, just because of the inconvenience, do you think a second nation-wide election would have had less voter turnout because people would be so disgusted by the whole thing, or do you think there would be more turnout because people would know how close the race was and would really feel that their votes matter?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR JACK!!!!!!!
-
DR Amy - I basically agree with your analysis of Election 2000, except that I believe the majority of ballots that had two votes contained votes for Gore and Buchanan, not Gore and Bush. And since the district was heavily Democratic-leaning, I think it is pretty safe to assume that had the ballot snafu not occurred, Gore would have won the district and therefore the election.
Had they held a re-vote, I think the turnout would have exceeded the November 4th turnout, because as you surmised, people would really feel like their vote might make a difference. But what a logistical nightmare.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm 40!

You're still younger than All My Children all my children.

You're kidding me!

IMHO, I think WMD was a guise of Bush to sell the war to the American people. There was never any evidence of it.
There is no doubt that Iraq had WMD (they had already used a few), the only question is what became of them!

Boxers or Briefs?

Boxer briefs and the Professor, Little Buddy!

It's the GOP spin, of course, that paints Gore as having also tried to steal the election -- the one that he WON in popular votes, that is.
Per the US Constitution, the popular vote matters not, only the Electoral College counts!
der Brucer
NOTE: If, in fact, popular vote decided the Presidency, campaigns would be run in a very different fashion - virtually no attention would be paid to the plains, desert, or mountain states and the efforts would be directed at the major coastal metropolitan areas.

As has happened SEVERAL times since it was written, the Constitution has been amended to CORRECT things that are woefully wrong with it.
The electoral college is a thing way overdue for elimination.
-

Neither - Boxers drool and briefs are tedious reading.

Short of eliminating the Electoral College, one potential way to fine-tune the election process, which some states are starting to pursue, is to award Electoral Delegates in amount proportional to the popular vote, rather than a winner-takes-all strategy.

The electoral college system definitely favors the lesser populated states; to change the syatem would require the support of the lesser populated states, so - it ain'ta gonna happen.

If Larry Moore had been on that boat, what would his character name have been and what would he have added to the story?
Maestro.
Out of frustration and general crankiness, he would have killed all of the other castaways and so there would have been no show until the episode that Denny Miller appeared as the jungle man, but then that one could not have aired until late night cable TV came into being.

IMHO, I think WMD was a guise of Bush to sell the war to the American people.

Whilst running today, I was thinking about the short story I'd begun a couple of months ago - I'm now of the mind that it might end up being my next novel. I didn't originally think it would hold for that length, but I'm thinking it just might, so come January I think that's the direction I'm going - if it doesn't hold, then I'll make it a novella and write a few other stories, but I think it's an interesting character for a book and the subject matter is near and dear to my heart.

Then what would be the point/necessity of the Electoral College?
-
The problem with recounts is that they almost never result in a change of the results.
We had spaghetti three times at our house this week.

I began my afternoon with Friday night's MONK. Mr. Monk in love. Ugh! A frustrating episode (most of them are now) though Randy's stupidity for once was very funny at the opening of the episode.
-
I finished watching the rest of THE SHIELD episodes. Compelling, exciting, angst-ridden. I can't wait for the final season to begin next Tuesday.

There were two featurettes on the final disc. One was a comparison between movie director Frank Darabont and TV director Paris Barclay's handling of individual episodes. Kind of fun seeing the different directing styles.

Could this day get any more beautiful?!?!?! -And I'm not just talking about the weather which has truly been picture- and temp-perfect! A true stunner of a day!

The second featurette was about actress Franka Potente (RUN LOLA RUN) who guest starred on three episodes of the show. The role was written for her because she was such a major fan of the series and wanted to be on it.

So tonight is mine all mine, and I'll get to watch quite a few things for fun including the two TV shows still on the DVR and if I'm not in the mood for I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY, I'll watch A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER on Blu-ray.

Thanks to DR KERRY and DR JMK!!!

DR ELMORE - I see you are now a friend of Adam Chandler....always a fun companion though not the sharpest knife in the drawer....DRJOSE might think about checking out his Facebook page, too.

DR Jose - have a great time tonight!

In today's UPS shipment:
"Heroes", Season 2
The 25 45 rpm cast albums and musical soundtracks I won on eBay last week.
-
If I were in your respective towns, I would buy you each a nice birthday dinner!
-
I've skipped so far on HEROES - Season 2. I will eventually own it, but I'll wait for a reduced sale price. I wasn't enamored enough of the season to need it right now (though I barely remember much of what happened during the season since it ended in December 2007.)
Now, THE OFFICE - Season 4. That comes out next week, and I'll have to have it. There's even an episode that I missed when a tornado in the area terminated all network broadcasts and we had weather reports for 3 hours.
-
Ginny, shouldn't your local library have the Adriana Hofstetter books? :)
-
I'm sure we've had several words before - it's impossible for me to remember and I just do the ones that don't seem familiar. I think we've been doing these for a good two years now.
And I thought they were just from Dictionary.com :)

And now, I'm heading down to get started on my fun evening of viewing.

Back from errands. Am having tuna sandwiches for the meal o' the day. Listening to the new Trijntje Oosterhaus Bacharach II CD - it's very good but not as very good as the first one. She now simply goes by the name Traincha - I guess they're trying to US her.

best birthdays, boys: remember, Jose, XL is just a number, not necessarily a size
Love the TOD, as I love politics but rarely get to post. Seems to me that what Aaron Sorkin et al. were writing for The West Wing was something of a fantasy on how the executive branch would have been under Al Gore. There would be intellect, and due consideration of opposing points of view, applied to every decision the president made.
Americans traveling abroad wouldn't be greeted with snickers and scowls. We'd be known as a peaceful giant, one that held to principles of fairness such as habeus corpus, the right to a speedy trial, the right to private consultations with an attorney, to know what one is charged with. And as a country that didn't suddenly abandon old treaties like the Geneva Convention, so that we could abandon our tradition of decency and utilize torture.
While I believe 9/11 would have happened, I truly believe Osama Bin Laden would have been caught and punished. If half of the resources devoted to ousting Saddam Hussein had been devoted to ending Al Qaeda, we'd have won a far worthier battle. No troops died in wars started by Clinton, and that fine record would likely have continued.
Government would be a whole lot smaller. If President Gore discovered the FBI and the CIA weren't effectively working together, he'd yell at the heads and order them to. So, no need for the vast bureaucracy known as Homeland Security. And no paying for all of that by borrowing from the Chinese, either.
The Green thing is the most obvious thing: every new structure would be built with solar panels on its roof. Every bus and taxi would be electric. The roads would be fixed, and would be filled mostly with electric cars and hybrids.
The Supreme Court would be a whole lot wiser and less ideological. Government wouldn't tap our phones or look at our library check-outs. The rich would be taxed more (Inheritance Tax would remain) and the middle class would be taxed less. Having a leader who respects science inspires scientists to make great discoveries.
It's also likely that Gore would have made a few bone-headed mistakes. But he'd have the humility to admit his errors, and change policies that needed changing. I don't think he'd have been the greatest president ever, but probably better than most.
-

Short of eliminating the Electoral College, one potential way to fine-tune the election process, which some states are starting to pursue, is to award Electoral Delegates in amount proportional to the popular vote, rather than a winner-takes-all strategy.
I have read that also. I have also wondered about the necessity of the college also. It pits the big states against the small states and rural vs. urban states. Some states have a more urban population than others.

I have to say, I was never a fan of Al Gore when he ran for President. Too many lock boxes for me. I wasn't a Bush fan then (And never became one) and predicted before the election that the economy would go to hell and we would go to war in Iraq. People laughed at me and said I was over reacting. Go figure.
-
I don't know what would have happened had Gore been President. I'm not as idealistic about it as DR Noel. Congress is always the major problem - they have more control over a lot of things than the President. Things would be different, better? I would hope so, but you just doing know.
-
Everyone in my family has conveniently forgotten the things I predicted would happen with Bush in office. When he got permission from Congress to send troops to Afghanistan, I made it a point to tell them it would end up in Iraq under false pretenses.
Of course, everybody in my family (back in South Carolina) watches Fox News 24/7, so it's no wonder they now scratch their heads trying to figure out how things went so wrong.
Sigh.

I will say after spending the last approximately 10+ years in federal court and dealing with the power of the federal government every day, I have grown more and more in favor of limiting the power of the federal government and returning it to the states. I didn't used to feel that way, but the power and abuse of power on the federal level is really sickening. This isn't totally a Bush problem. A lot if it started in the Clinton administration

Good Evening!
I'm back from La Cocina.
It was great spending time with fellow HHWers Ben and Larry, and my friends, Michael and Kent joined the partay as well. It was quite a wonderful time, and the conversation was sparkling and spirited at times.
My roommate, Jim, finally showed up just a few minutes after the group broke up. He had originally texted me to tell me that he was leaving work at 6:00... And then he texted me again at 7:30 to say that he was finally on his way. So, walked down to Grom and he bought me a cup of gelato. :)
-
Back from a little grocery trip. Got some more flavored sparkling waters, and some Kleenex and paper towels and a couple of light bulbs for the book room, which has been in darkness for a week.

That's a conundrum, plain and simple. Under Clinton, he hoped the courts would back his decisions regarding social changes, such as allowing gays to serve openly in the military. If that had ever had a chance, it would have hinged on the federal courts backing it up.
Along with whatever good might result, there is also a lot of bad.

Boy! You sure know how to make a guy's mouth water!
-
Oh, go on and DO IT, Jose! Just one more post before another milestone!
-
Glad to see that DR Jane and DH Keith are home safely. I am sure they are exhausted.
-
I hope that DRs JRand58 and JoseSPiano have had a good day.

Cuisinart versus Kitchen Aid stand mixers - anyone have an opinion?
-
I don't do this very often, but I would like to share...
I passed all four of my General Knowledge Exams towards my Florida Educators' Certification.
Next up is the Professional Teacher's Exam in October.
-
Finished the new Trijntje Oosterhaus aka Traincha CD - volume two of Bacharach material. It's very good, but not as good as the first volume, which is brilliant. There's some beautiful stuff here, it's all wonderfully interpreted and sung, and the arrangements are still by Pat Williams and Vince Mendoza - I suppose for me it's the choices of songs - I wish they'd not done quite so many of the newer ones and done some unusual earlier ones like Come And Get Me, which, as far as I know, has only been recorded once by Jackie De Shannon.
-
Congrats to dear readers Shayne - hopefully he'll be hanging around more, and hopefully he will read the new book he got and post a review on amazon. :)
-
Welcome back, Jane. Take care of yourself and your DH Keith.
Thank you. At least our colds are much better. On the trip up we went through a ton of Kleenex & disinfectant wipes. ;D
-
Dare I brave part two of The Andromeda Strain? I guess I will, just to say I saw the whole thing. For my little snack tonight, it will be ranch-flavored Quakes Rice Snacks. I've grown very fond of these, and they're very low-cal and fat gram friendly. There are five servings in a bag, so if you do the whole bag it's only 350 calories, which is fine since I ate under 1000 so far today - but I doubt I'll eat more than half the bag anyway.
-
I have to say, I was never a fan of Al Gore when he ran for President. Too many lock boxes for me. I wasn't a Bush fan then (And never became one) and predicted before the election that the economy would go to hell and we would go to war in Iraq. People laughed at me and said I was over reacting. Go figure.
Interesting you expected the war.

Going to bed now and shall miss it, so...
CONGRATULATIONS to DR JoseSPiano on his lofty new HHW plateau! :D

Congrats DR Jose. I'm glad you have had a very nice celebration.
-
Congratulations to DR Michael S!
-
Dare I brave part two of The Andromeda Strain? I guess I will, just to say I saw the whole thing.
Considering how much you enjoyed the first half of the movie, you are going to "love" the dramatic ending.
-
Cuisinart versus Kitchen Aid stand mixers - anyone have an opinion?
Well, you could buy both and whichever one you don't like as well....send it to me ;D
-

DR Jane - I can't remember if this has been answered already, but...
Have you heard from Danise lately?

PRESENTING
MY 32,0000TH POST!!!!!!!
*And on my Birthday no less!
WOO HOO!!!!!!
-
Congratulations, DR Michael S!
-
Welcome back Jane. Glad you are home.
-
DR singdaw - As for KitchenAid vs. Cuisinart... Their standard models are about equal. I've been thinking of upgrading my stand mixer, and the reviews for both lines seem pretty equal. Usually seems to come down to a choice of colors and attachments and accessories. *I still sort of want the KitchenAid Ice Cream Chiller bowl. ;)
-
And, yes, Welcome Home, Jane. I hope that both you and Keith are able to have some "down time" over the next few times.
-
DR Jose, I was thinking about margaritas and La Cosina about the time you were there.
-
Here I am back from La Cocina. I've been back for a while but had to stay off line until Anthony called. He asked me to bring him some things when I come to Wisconsin so we had to figure out where they were.
A loverly time was had this evening. It was great fun to help Jose usher in his 40s. I'm still feeling the effects of two margaritas (watermelon). They make 'em strong on the Upper West Side. I had a beef quesadia (sp) and we had spirited discussions about politics, and whatever else came out of our mouths.
It's getting on to 10pm. Not late to some but I'm about to head to bed.
Goodnight all. See you in the morning.
-
DR Jane - I can't remember if this has been answered already, but...
Have you heard from Danise lately?
I heard from her earlier this evening.
-
Ah, yes, welcome back Jane (and Keith)
-
DRs Jose and Singdaw, you could come visit us here in Ohio and shop at the
KitchenAid Experience Center (http://www.kitchenaid.com/custserv/experience.jsp)
-
Oooh... And that Blueberry Crumble Frozen Custard... Blueberry Frozen Custard... Cinnamon... Bit of Crumble (Graham Crackers)... Sooooo good. -A little "Fall-y" - because of the cinnamon - but sooo good!
*I even bought a "I SS NY" t-shirt! :)
I Social Security NY?
-
Thank you DRs Cilla & Jose.
We will aim for downtime. There is always much to be done after returning from a trip, especially if you have company prior to leaving.
I suppose down time is what we are having at the moment. I'm here talking & Keith is setting up our new laptop. His brother is moving to a smaller apartment & won't have room for his large computer. We went to Best Buy so Keith could choose a laptop for him. While we were there found a semi-small one for us to use while traveling & when while sitting out on our deck. The deck is where Keith is now.
-
DR JRand58 - I did just check out his Facebook page after you mentioned him in your earlier post. He looks familiar to me. Although, almost any actor in New York City looks familiar to me by this point and time. ;)
But does that have anything to do with playing the piano?
-
I am going to disconnect the computer, get some ice cream, and try to watch The Hillary Show. My next posts should be from NYC.
Bye for now!
-
DR Ginny, SAFE & EASY TRAVELS & A WONDERFUL TRIP!
-
Thanks DR Ben, it is nice to be back.
-
The Des Moines Register has done some nice Shawn Johnson posters/desktop wallpaper etc. I like this one

I just got a call from a friend of mine who said that he's hanging out with some other friends after their show tonight... and they want to buy me a few more birthday drinks.. Hmm...
Alas, I think I'm in for the evening.

Perhaps you should celebrate, belatedly, in NYC in December!

Nice posters Cilla.
Thanks! I like this one too, but I have to wonder what Shawn thinks about the look on her face ;D
-
Converse makes pink high tops in adult sizes!!! Dare I?
Why not?
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Congrats to Jose on his large new achievement.
-
I wonder if the people who made this Andromeda Strain bothered to read the novel? Talk about a creative team (and I use that term loosely) not trusting their material and "borrowing" every nonsensical and inane plot device from every film of the last twenty years - they should give the money back that they were paid to make this tripe. I can't imagine Mr. Crichton was thrilled but he probably didn't bother watching. If he had the same sort of deal Mr. Matheson had with Universal on I Am Legend, then he received nothing for this remake, unless he has a piece of the profits and let me tell you this piece of crap is a total writeoff. I've got twenty more minutes to go and I have no doubt they will be just as excruciating as the 160 minutes that preceded them.
-
Welcome back, Jane. Whatever vibes are needed right now for your family are sent your way.
-
I've got twenty more minutes to go and I have no doubt they will be just as excruciating as the 160 minutes that preceded them.
At least. ;D
-
Thank you DR FJL.
-
Congrats to Jose on his large new achievement.
That's what all the guys say to Jose! :o
-
I believe we have a CLOSER to watch. I'm not sure what else recorded while we were away.
'night
-
Night Jane, take care
-
Had such fun this evening watching stuff I wanted to watch without notepad in lap. The time flew by.
I began by watching today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Part of it was preempted by weather bulletins, so I'll get today's write-up on the show elsewhere. The boys were on (naturally) so I'll be curious to see everything that happened. I managed to see about 35 minutes of the show.
-
Next, I watched MAD MEN. My goodness, little innocent Peggy is growing up and learning some tricks of the trade! I do NOT understand Don's attraction to Bobbi at all.
-
Next, I put on the Blu-ray of CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER. I like the movie, and there are some great action set pieces, but the plot sure meanders all over the place.
The Blu-ray looks simply fabulous, and it had a Dolby TrueHD audio mix which was also sensational.
-
I followed this up with Sunday night's LAW & ORDER: CI. Great to see Tony Goldwyn again as Bobby's brother, and John Glover is always wonderful to watch.
Nicole Wallace was always an excellent nemesis for Bobby, but this seems to write finis to her character now, and I'm not sorry.
-
I concluded the evening by watching the first 20 minutes of the Robinson/Davis/Bogart KID GALAHAD. I haven't seen this in quite awhile, and since I didn't buy the latest gangsters box where it was contained, I did want to see it again without buying that entire box. I don't think those movies are being sold separately.
-
Tomorrow I'll be watching THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG for review. It came out on the 5th of this month, but Paramount overlooked sending it to me until Friday. That and PERRY MASON will both be late, but I'll get them done.
-
Congratulations to DR Michael Shayne on his exam results. Hope the next part ends just as successfully for you.
(All of that seems a million years ago for me, but I do remember how excited I was getting my results once the testing was over. Can't remember how long it took back then. Seems like I took it in the second semester of my junion year in college. I don't think I waited until I was a senior.)
-
I stayed up too late last night reading, so I'm heading down now to hopefully get a longer night's sleep.
WBBL.
-
Congratulations to DR MICHAEL S!
More thanks to DRs JANE, CILLALIZ, TCB, and FJL on their wishes for happy birthday.
It was!
And yes I had my cake this morning before I went to work, and I will have more TOMORROW!
-
Have your cake and eat it too, JRAND!
-
And here is the alternate choice for my avatar - maybe next year. ;D
-
Have your cake and eat it too, JRAND!
That's the plan! And so far, it's working out perfectly. :D
-
Isn't it strange that one can watch a movie a LOT of times....over and over....and then suddenly a line of dialog is there as though you've never heard it before.
I was watching PSYCHO tonight, and something the psychiatrist said at the end I had never really listened to before, and it made it even more creepy:
Norman was so jealous of his mother's relationships with others, he naturally assumed that she was just as jealous of him....causing him - when he was mother - to go into those rages and kill young women.... And of course, in life....she wasn't at all jealous of Norman....
-
The sound effect of the closing door that Universal uses in all its movies and tv shows is so jarring....no matter what kind of door it is....that's the way it sounds when it closes.....
-
I survived the excrement known as the remake of The Andromeda Strain, then began watching the real The Andromeda Strain movie - it's not all that good (didn't think so then, don't think so now), but it's a masterpiece compared to the remake. At least they try to stay true to Crichton's book, which is a great thriller.
-
I just returned from a 2.5 hour teleconference meeting. It was exciting, I tell you. Simply thrilling.
-
At least you returned, unlike the WUSSBURGERS.
-
I don't do this very often, but I would like to share...
I passed all four of my General Knowledge Exams towards my Florida Educators' Certification.
Next up is the Professional Teacher's Exam in October.
Congratulations, Michael!! And Good Luck for the exam in October!! ;D

Your "32,0000TH"??
Congrats, anyway! ;D

DR Jane - I can't remember if this has been answered already, but...
Have you heard from Danise lately?
Why don't you e-mail her? Personally, I think if folks want to stay in touch, they WILL stay in touch.
Her e-mail address is under her profile.

I really liked the original movie, but couldn't get past the first 10 minutes of the "remake."
:P I say.
-
Congratulations to DR MichaelS!
-
Right now, I'm watching the Lincoln Center revival of A Little Night Music with Sally Ann Howes that's on the hard drive of my DVD burner. I'm also creating chapter breaks for when it's burned onto an actual DVD. :)
-
And since we're so close...
-
PAGE 13 DANCE!!
