Title: FROU FROU
Post by: bk on August 29, 2008, 12:18:59 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had only the smallest bit of frou frou, so small, in fact, that we only really had frou, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they don't care about frou frou because they've got moo moo.

I enjoyed the sample tracks on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Across-Crystal-Sea-Conducted-Arranged/dp/B0018FZIT4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1219996037&sr=1-1).  Quite lush...not to be confused with a lush, mind you. ;)

I don't have an iPod and I gave up Walkmans years ago so I'm not listenin' to nuttin' I'll read the New York Times at the airport and I'll continue reading my book, Thirty Days Hath November by the late, great Walter Kerr.

That's it from my end of the pond.

I'm very excited about seeing South Pacific tonight, but my strong second choice would to be in LA to see Vanities with BK.  I loved that play back in its day and hope the musical does it justice and is very successful.

Good morning, all! I'm a bit head-achey at the moment:  When I was released from hospital last night, all I had to eat were a couple of boiled eggs, and I awoke three times during the night:
   1.  1:59 am, bathroom break
   2.  3:30 am, stomach cramps
   3.  5:30 am, hungry and head-achey so I got up and had about half a cup of cranberry juice and a slice of whole wheat bread; there's nothing in the refrigerator beyond that, a gallon of water, and 3 eggs at the moment.

I'm about to step over to Cafe 82 for breakfast and then I'll call my doctor to see if I can get in today and see if he wants to rethink some prescriptions. Since I would swear that he never told me I was diabetic, although he must have said something like "metformin to control your blood sugar" and I missed the subtext, I'm looking into diabetes testing kits; my cousin Sue demanded to know why he hadn't given me one or suggested I purchase one.

TOD:
DVD: three Netflix items, a new TRISTAN UND ISOLDE and FIDELIO
CD:  Coppelia, Guy Haines, Rat Pack Christmas

TOD - As I'd requested, DH Richard got The 39 Steps from NetFlix, 'cause I wanted to see it before we saw the stage production here.  It arrived Monday or Tuesday while I was at work, and we didn't have time to watch it either evening before leaving early Wednesday morning.

Oh, well, we're seeing it at the Cort tomorrow evening anyway and will watch the movie when we get home.

DR elmore - You HAVE to get in to see your doctor today, or any other doctor at that office. -Especially with the holiday weekend coming up. Although I wonder if you could head back to St. Luke's to see Dr. Walker or Dr. Green Eyes? ;)

*And if have any more cranberry juice in your fridge, either throw it out or dilute it. You have to be careful with the fruit juices.

DR Elmore - I'm not surprised you didn't sleep well last night and woke up hungry.  Even when I've had routine tests that required a fast, I've been especially hungry the next day.

I'm not quite sure what I'll be watching this weekend.

Sunday is my stepson's wedding, so I'll be too busy to watch anything that day.

For the rest of the weekend, there are many possibilities.  I have 2 new box sets from Warner Home Video, ERROL FLYNN WESTERNS and WARNER CLASSIC WESTERNS, plus copies of MOBILE, FELON, NOISE, MEDIUM, Season 4, CRIMINAL MINDS, Season 3 and a few other things to choose from, so I'm sure I'll keep busy.

DR singdaw - Alas, I have no more photos of Dr. "Green Eyes".  But I do have his full name... And both DR elmore and I agreed that he had an "actor face".  He looked familiar to me.  -And it turns out he was down at Duke at the same time I was working down there for a semester, so... ???

Well, as you can tell, the two(!) pics were posed.  So we asked them if we could take their pics.  -It really was just that "fun" an ER yesterday.  As for the other pic of Dr. "Green Eyes"...  Well...

Yes, I took them with my iPhone. ;)

*I just wish I could have gotten a pic of DR elmore's original doctor, or at least the other Residents and ER docs - for DR MBarnum's reference.  ;)

I must say that highs can go to lows quickly. The only person i did not want to win hoh was jerry. and guess who won? Yuck. This totally sucks. Especially after the high of last night's show. I wonder if he will nom dan/memphis. Memphis/dan have come up with a plan to screw over jerry (convincing him to nom renny/dan and have a memp/keesha/jerry F3). then they i guess what memp to win POV and put up keesha and vote renny out. I actually wouldn't be completely opposed to that. I don't want dan to go!

I decided to go ahead this morning and finish the two PERRY MASON episodes I had yet to watch. The first took Perry into the Sierra Mountains and a trial where Hamilton Burger was not the prosecuting attorney. Always a fun change of pace with this type of episode.

Among the guest stars were Barton MacLane and Ann Rutherford.

The second one was back to the usual story with two stalwarts from 1950s and 1960s television: Patricia Barry and Simon Oakland.

Patricia Barry seemed to be a guest star on every TV series I ever watched growing up. Her cooing, seductive vixen was used in show after show until it was almost a joke to see her on a show. Even if she wasn't the guilty party, you could bet she had a scheme in the works and was full of lies and treachery.

I've listened to about five tracks of the new Gypsy CD.  I'm enjoying them as I always enjoy almost any Gypsy CD, but, as all of the subsequent CDs, it doesn't come anywhere close to the original - sound-wise especially.  The original is simply one of the greatest-sounding cast albums ever, and I don't mean that unconscionable remix by Mr. Thomas Z. Shepard, where he "fixed" a trumpet note in the overture, and inserted a different take on one line of Merman's in I can't remember what song.  The sheer chutzpah of this was beyond belief, especially if some record producer had tried to do it to one of HIS albums.  I'm sure if Mr. Styne and Mr. Sondheim had thought there was a cracked trumpet note they would have fixed it - they had the other take.  One person's cracked trumpet note is another person's exciting trumpet note, and how dare him second-guess Mr. Styne and Mr. Sondheim, not to mention the album's producer, Mr. Lieberson, about a Merman take?  Horrible, and I ONLY play the original CD issue.

BK, I don't know how you can say that the internet has reduced the sense of "discovery" when it comes to CDs....for goodness sake, I have discovered so many different singers and groups while just looking up one CD on Amazon or CDBaby.com...they always have links to other singers/groups, which leads to even more links to even more singers/groups...there are times I have spent hours just perusing those two websites and adding to my wish lists.

And the best part is that on the internet you can usually listen to snippets of the CD so as to know if it would appeal to you (although many retail stores allow this, also).

So, I'm not seeing the doctor until tuesday at 2:30, and the appointment's all set.  So, after I hear from Charlotte, I will go to refill my prescription, and perhaps stop at the market.

My goal right now is to clean out the refigerator.

Well, since you posted:

I got up and had about half a cup of cranberry juice and a slice of whole wheat bread; there's nothing in the refrigerator beyond that, a gallon of water, and 3 eggs at the moment.

the clean out should be a brief task!

The bed-room TV gave up the ghost - clear sound but a picture collapsed into a shimmering line across the center of the screen. I bought it a Wal-Mart for under $200 over five years ago (after we moved and before the moving trailer arrived.) Try to find a replacement for that price today!) The bedroom TV is for my News show addiction in the evening and for Woody's DVD viewing when I am monopolizing the living room TV in the evenings. The shopping experience was one of the infernal "this is nice but for another $X I can have" episodes that can lead to a very expensive purpose. I had to keep reminding myself "You are just replacing an old TV, not upgrading the home entertainment center!" I settled on a 26" Sanyo 720 LCD HDTV for under $400. Much to my pleasant surprise, I just plugged it in, hooked up the dangling co-ax from the old system, and after an automatic, lengthy, channel search, up popped FoxNews!  Woody pop-in a DVD in the old DVD player, an got his movie! (The DVD player is actually connected (by coax) between the COMCAST receiver and the TV.)  I can worry about upgrading my cable service for this set until later. Meanwhile I think I'll move the up-convert DVD player from the living room to the bedroom and hook it up with HDMI. And, I'm guessing that for DVD viewing on a 26" set, the lack of 1080p will not be missed.

Given how many people are suffering as a result of high gasoline prices, high food prices, and high heating bills, I'd like to see the conventions cut back. In fact, I'd like to see this in many areas. I'm really tired of all this over-the-top business. I don't expect it to solve all the nation's problems--far from it--and it would hurt some perhaps, but IMO a back-to-basics approach is in order.

Just my 2 cents.

Feel better VIBES to DR Elmore.

Recovering from 4+ hours of callbacks for Rent - The School Edition.  It was the longest and most tedious callback I've ever played for, mostly in part because it was VERY hot and stuffy in the room we were in.  Then we went and cast the show, which went ok.

I haven't had a chance for a media check, I'll check in later with that.

I completely understand your cousin Sue's reaction.  Aside from the kit, how about more than a casual mention of the need to control your blood sugar.  A full explanation was due, possibly a referral to a nutritionist who specializes in diabetes.  He should have a least set you up on a regular schedule to check your sugar levels.

Again, thank goodness for friends who diagnosed your problem!!!

Some lyrics are changed, some sections of songs are cut and keys have been adjusted.  However, some of the words of La Vie Boheme are still intact, while whole lines have been cut.  Makes me wonder who is in charge of these changes and who's to say what is appropriate for high school age kids.  However, the kids are excited by the show.

Further thoughts about the new Gypsy CD, sound preferences aside:

I hate some of these tempos - so weird.  This particular conductor is my least favorite of all the B'way conductors working.  While I like Patti very much, she's really working overtime here - and not always for the better.  Laura is very good, as is Boyd.  I'm up to Little Lamb.
Title: Re:FROU FROU
Post by: bk on August 29, 2008, 12:10:08 PM
Man, these tempos are TERRIBLE - speeding up and slowing down and stopping in If Mamma Was Married.  If these decisions and the decisions on the choral inflections in the boys' stuff in the vaudeville numbers are the musical director's, well, it's not to my liking.  And everyone is so busy trying to not do anything anyone's ever done before that it's completely distracting.  The Dainty June's dialogue within the cow song and B'way transition is so forced and unfunny - hard to not get the tinsel and glamour speech right.  And Laura's bored "moo moo moo moo's" are just odd.  The character is TRYING to be good, not trying to be bored.  Now the Tulsa is over-singing All I Need Is The Girl - I wonder what the word "debonair" means - weird pronunciations, too - is this guy American.  I started out enjoying this CD, but my enjoyment is withering with each new track.

I have a scenario for all DR's to chime in on...

If you were working on a show (in any capacity), say a show by one of bk's close personal friends, and you are witness to the director hacking the script to bits - you know leaving out dialogue/lyrics that tell the story, because they feel the "show is too long".  Would you contact the licensee regarding these cuts?  Or would you just keep your mouth shut?

This is the worst All I Need Is The Girl I've ever heard - now the guy's screaming - literally.  Embarrassingly bad - I shall have to go put on the original cast album and listen Paul Wallace, who understands what the song was about.  Has Arthur Laurents lost his sanity?

My next project is to see how this blood glucose meter works.

I can think of three "frou-frous" in world literature:
  1. Title character in a French play of the 1860's
  2. Gabrielle's couplets in LA VIE PARISIENNE about how the dress of the sophisticated Parisienne goes "frou frou" when she walks
  3. One of Danilo's grisettes at Maxim's in THE MERRY WIDOW.

Sometimes the shaken baby cases are hard to prove, sometimes not so much. It's really hard to say premeditated murder. He wanted the baby to be quiet, hard to say he wanted the baby to die.  But yes, the charges appear to have been reduced for the plea

Patti is rather fierce on Rose's Turn - I liked it, but still like Merman and Lansbury better.  And, while I know that playoff music after the little post Rose's Turn scene is apparently included on a bonus disc at Barnes and Noble, the ending of this cast album proper is Rose's Turn - not my favorite way to end a Gypsy album especially when two seconds later we start in on the cut songs.  The two mother's day cut songs are bad - easy to see why they went.  Mamma's Talkin' Soft is a great song, and it was nice to hear how it was supposed to work (I recorded JUST the song, not its counterpoint to Small World).

I do prefer the orchestration and vocals on Lost In Boston III, but that's just because I'm used to them after all these years.  Also, the two songs really don't work in counterpoint - the counterpoint section has completely different music for Mamma's Talkin' Soft.  Interesting.

And speaking of hunks and baritones...  Here's a "video" of Nathan Gunn and Kristin Chenoweth performing "It Feels Like Home" (from Nathan Gunn's last album).  -Alas, it's not my favorite rendition, nor arrangement of Bucchino's song - Nancy Lamott! - but at least Mr. Gunn is nice to look at.

It Feels Like Home with Kristin and Nathan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbsHa4J9B1E)

I didn't really like this version :-\ (although, I did enjoy looking at Nathan ;)).  I haven't listened to Nancy's version in long time, but I love Daisy Prince's version on the CD, Grateful: The Songs of John Bucchino (http://www.amazon.com/Grateful-Songs-Bucchino-Various-Artists/dp/B00004SBV2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1220039772&sr=1-2).  I even got the songbook (http://www.amazon.com/Grateful-Songs-John-Bucchino/dp/0634020005/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1220039772&sr=1-1), and have performed the songs, "A Powerful Man" and "That Smile" (as a solo).

The TV series :)

From NetFlix:

"Hitting the airwaves in 1958, "Wanted Dead or Alive" launched star Steve McQueen's career into the stratosphere. McQueen plays laconic bounty hunter Josh Randall, who packs a sawed-off Winchester shotgun as he tracks his criminal quarry throughout the Old West. Among the wagonload of bonus material are the six-part documentary Life in the Fast Lane, three featurettes, a McQueen biography and photo galleries."

I actually prefer Paul Wallace's rendition of "All I Need Is the Girl" on the GYPSY soundtrack. On the cast recording, his voice is a bit raspy from the exhaustion of opening a show. At any rate, his IS the definitive rendition of this great song. No other I have ever heard or seen is its equal.

I have to say that moving the final night of the Convention to a football stadium seemed liked a huge and gratuitous waste of money.  Yes, I get the "symbolism" of it all - opening the event to "everyone" - but renting a stadium ain't cheap, and those weren't 500 volunteers setting up that stage and all those chairs on the field.  -I wonder if any financial figures are available, will be released.

*I think I've mentioned this before, but...  The Obama "team" has been out here on the streets of NYC for the past couple of weeks in full force. "Excuse me, do you have a moment or two for Change?"

One woman responded something along the line of:
If you truly believe that Obama will be the next President of the United States, why do you still need my money or my friends' money?  Wouldn't it be better to tell people to make sure that they go to the polls in November - and to make sure that they get their friends to do the same?  I do support the Democratic party, but I am not about to give money to an organization in order to pay for TV commercials, travel expenses or hotel rooms.

-The "poor" girl was a bit stunned.  And speechless.  ;)

How often do you have to charge that iPhone, anyway?   You seem to be getting good use out of it!!

Well, here are the specs directly from Apple:

Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery
Charging via USB to computer system or power adapter

Talk time:
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 10 hours on 2G
Standby time: Up to 300 hours

Internet use:
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 6 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 7 hours
Audio playback: Up to 24 hours

This is my first "data phone", and I was a little taken aback by the relatively short battery time - at least in comparison to my previous cell phones.  However, I did some research on the talk times and internet times on other data phones - Blackberrys, Treos, etc. - and found the battery life to be comparable.  And I do seem to be experiencing the battery times that Apple has listed.

*I also realized that I should not normally be talking on my phone for four hours each day, nor using it five hours in a row for internet usage.  I don't ever want to become one of "those people".  No "Crack-Berry Syndrome" for me.  -Although, in the few short weeks I've had my iPhone, I have had a few "lapses", and, of course, my iPhone came in handy when I was in the ER yesterday with DR elmore.

**I also carry the charging adapter with me too, just in case.

Or you could tell someone who happens to have friends at the licensing company that they may want to "investigate" a production currently in rehearsal.

-Does anyone remember that production of Company in Richmond, VA, that made "Bobby", "Bobbi"?   -I thought not.   :-X   (And it was running at the same time as the Sondheim Celebration's production at the Kennedy Center just 100 miles away in DC!?!?!?)

I hear you, but I did listen as a whole, straight through, merely commenting as I was listening, athough mostly after a track had finished.  I thought Tony Yazbeck's All I Need Is The Girl, one of the worst things I've ever heard - just my opinion, though.   If the tempo decisions are not the conductor's, I'm sort of at a loss as to whose they are.  I don't think eighty year old Mr. Laurents is making with the tempos, and certainly Mr. Sondheim wasn't (this I know).  I wanted to love it, and I certainly enjoyed some of it.  It's my favorite score and show ever.  I'm sure I would enjoy it on stage, but as a listening experience I found it really odd a lot of the time.  Not talking about the techinical production of the CD, but the acting choices and odd approaches that, for me, just didn't work, at least not as a listening experience.  All I Need Is The Girl is a very specific song done by someone who is trying to create a very specific thing for himself - and debonair is the key to the song, it's what it's about lyrically and musically.  This version is like some weird mutant version.  But I haven't liked any of the Tulsas I've seen or heard - I don't know why that part is so hard to get right.  Mr. Wallace got it perfectly - the dreamer, the debonair song and dance man, all of it.

I can accept what Patti is doing and responded to certain things more than others.  Laura is a wonderful singer, but the interpretation of the "moo moo moo moo" is so wrong to my ear - again maybe it works on stage, but the character that I know as Louise wants to do her best - she just isn't very good.  The bored moo's just rubbed me wrong, I guess.  I thought the stripper number was successful, and the best-sounding thing on the CD.  And I was not thrilled with the tweaks, both arrangement-wise and orchestration-wise - if there's one show that doesn't need anybody's help, it's Gypsy.

I enjoyed it; I don't think any cast revival album except the 1960 FINIAN'S RAINBOW and THE 1970s KING & I surpasses the original cast recording. Lupone is better on the CD, and the tony Awards than I thought she was at City Center. And I liked Laura Benanti a lot.

I get Dear Abby's column by e-mail everyday.  One of today's questions was this:

Quote
DEAR ABBY: I was taught that a performance receives a standing ovation when it is truly spectacular. When you are especially moved or inspired, you show your appreciation by standing. Abby, every show I go to now receives a standing ovation. I don't always join in. I feel it should mean something, not just be expected at the end of every show.
I'm tired of getting the "evil eye" from people standing around me because I didn't feel an ovation was warranted. Don't get me wrong, I'm still generous with my applause and take into consideration all the aspects of the show. (For example, I wouldn't expect a play featuring 5-year-olds to be held to the same standard as a Broadway show.)

Am I wrong? Should I stand with everyone else, and am I confused about the meaning of standing ovations? Or should I remain seated? -- RELUCTANT IN MADISON, WIS.

DEAR RELUCTANT: If you don't feel a performance merits a standing ovation, stay in your seat. Do not let the reaction of other audience members intimidate you. It's possible they may be related to someone in the show, or even be the producers.

Have now finished The Fortune Cookie, a great Previn score, and am now in Neal Hefti heaven listening to How To Murder Your Wife, which will be followed by Duel At Diablo.  It really won't take all that long to get through the set, as most of the scores in this box are the original album presentations, which only run thirty minutes or so.  There's at least one expanded score, The Happy Ending, which takes up two CDs in this set.

Toward this end, I will request that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game work with its federal counter-parts in the identification of critical habitat, necessary conservation measures and the development of a recovery plan. I believe that State participation will help ensure a better result for polar bears and for the citizens of Alaska.

I keep forgetting to mention how reprehensible the radio spots for 9 to 5 are.  It's all Dolly Parton, singing the title song with new lyrics and saying things like "come on down and see me" as if she were IN the show.  It's very calculated and I'd bet some people will not be happy to find she's not there.

TOD:
DVDs:
ALL SHOOK UP - handmade, OBC, Oh! that Cheyenne Jackson!  And that arrangement of "Can't Help Falling In Love."  But. . .what an over-written, over-plotted piece of fluff.  Compared to this, Elvis' own TICKLE ME and HARUM SCARUM are film masterpieces!

REEFER MADNESS - Not JMK's, alas, but the Showtime movie with Alan Cumming and Christian Campbell.  I think it's a lot of fun, quite well done, and I've never, ever been a pothead!

SAAWARIYA - gorgeous Sony/Bollywood film based on Dostevsky's short story "White Nights."

MURDER IN PORTLAND - one of those Pacific Nortwest movies.  . .though this one is actually better than the previous ones, still nothing great.  I now can state that the bars in Portland, Seattle and Olympia are very nice.

WHOEVER SAYS THE TRUTH SHALL DIE - competent documentary on the life and death of Pier Paolo Pasolini, which addresses the issue of his murder effectively, though doesn't offer a quick solution.

IN THE DVDs TO BE BURNED PILE:
DAMES AT SEA - CBS-TV presentation: Ann-Margret, Ann Meara, Ann Miller.

ONCE UPON A MATTRESS - CBS-TV presentation, 1964, the one and only original - minus "Happily Ever After" but with a new duet for Dauntless and Winnifred.

SHE LOVES ME - BBC-TV presentation.  Gemma Craven, David Kernan and very few alterations to the score or book.

CDs:
GYPSY (2008) - Barnes & Noble edition.

REEFER MADNESS - TV Soundtrack; Love Robert Torti's "Listen to Jesus, Jimmy."

BIG RIVER - Original Australian Cast.  Ironically, this super-American musical is better off in the hands of the men Down Under.

THE COMPANY OF STRANGERS - Parker Scott.  Perfect debut album.

Heroes, season one (because I never did get the time to watch season two, the DVD for which is on order, and there's a lot that I've forgotten)

Doctor Who and the Silurians, the second story with the third Doctor (Jon Pertwee).

I had a Pastrami Reuben.  Ginny had a Corned Beef Reuben, and Richard had "Letter I" - a.k.a. Pastrami, Corned Beef, Swiss, Cole Slaw, and Russian Dressing on Rye.

bk - The current production of Gypsy and it's resulting OCR is different from the ones that have come before it.  Even Arthur Laurents admits to that.  I know that you - and many other people - love and "trust" Merman's original, but I think you also just have to sit back and listen to the new recording as a whole - and not comment from track to track.  It all works as a whole, not song by song, track by track.

Besides, the whole Track by Track gig was mine (even if I did give it up ages ago).

There were a bunch of special features on the second disc in the GHOST WHISPERER set. I watched them all. There were also two interactive games: one for kids making a haunted land where skeletons dance, etc. The other was a game to put together the correct investigative scenario for snooping out ghosts. I didn't have any patience to try to get to the end of THAT game.

Oh, my, what a glorious evening!  A festive meal with DRs Jose and Elmore and then an unbelievable night at the theater.

South Pacific is every bit as wonderful as DRs Elmore, Jose, Ben and anyone else who's seen it has said.  Some of my friends at home were skeptical when I said we were coming to NYC this time especially to see this production, but I wouldn't want to have missed it.  I kept waiting for something to be weak or to disappoint me and it never happened.  Well, it was a little disappointing that Danny Burstein was out tonight, but his Billis understudy did a fine job.

I was an emotional wreck at several points, but have recovered.

Mushroom barley soup and stuffed cabbage.

Probably the wisest choices among all of us at the table!

Jose - I was closer to South Passaic than South Pacific.  :)  My family celebrated my dad's and nephew's birthdays at Forno's restaurant by Newark Penn station.

On my dad's actual birthday a week from Sunday, I will be in D.C. for a dear dear cousin's wedding.

BTW, any word on ACE, the musical now playing at the Signature in Arlington VA?

and since I was never able to mail you your get well gift perhaps I can give it to you then!

(the stupid post office for "customer convenience" has changed their hours from 8 AM  - 5 PM to 9 AM  - 5 PM which means I can nerv get there, they do  have the "24  hourautomated postage machine" but the last 3 times I tried to use it it was out of postage... ah the convenience of modern customer service!

Back from Vanities, about which more later.  I'll start writing the notes in about fifteen minutes.  In the meantime, I'm listening to A Rage To Live, from this humungous box set - I love Nelson Riddle.
