Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a Shipoopi vibe, and now it's time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently singing ShiMOOpi.

A few of my favorite foreign films:

France - The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, Eyes Without A Face, The Soft Skin, all of Patrice Leconte's films, L'Appartement, Bob Le Flambeur and other Jean-Pierre Melville films, Sundays and Cybele, That Man From Rio - I could go on for days.

Japan - High and Low, The Bad Sleep Well, Stray Dog, Ikiru, Goyokin, and all of Ozu.  Along with Gojira and many other sci-fi films, and many others.

Italy - The Bicycle Thief, Rififfi, Big Deal On Madonna Street, all of Sergio Leone, and many peplums, especially Hercules and Hercules Unchained.

England - all of Powell and Pressburger and way too many others to name - although I'll chime in during the day.

And the word of the day is: HAPTIC!
HAPTIC was a very strange play by Tom Stoppard, all about spies and Heisenberg's uncertainity principle, featuring an audience participation sequence where the female lead (originally played by Felicity Kendall) was blindfolded and asked to tell everything she could about a couple of audience members who had been brought on-stage by feeling them up.  Hilarity ensued.

Der Brucer doesn't like many foreign films.  He finds all that reading distracting.   :-\

But, from my days pre-der B, when I was living in Hollywood, I remember:

Allegro Non Troppo
Taxi Zum Klo
and a pair of French comedies,
Pardon Mon Affaire and Pardon Mon Affaire, Too, which in France were known by their original titles, Un Elephant Ca Trompe Enormement and Nous Irons Tous au Paradis.

Good morning, all! My computer did not want to go near HHW this morning and I've been trying for over 30 minutes to enter the site.  So here I am.

I have mostly household errands to run this morning before the temperature goes very high. After that some editing on a Jerome Moross score and back to the Lady and her slipper.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I am already in midtown. It was one of those mornings where I knew that if I didn't get out of bed when my alarm went off I would have snoozed and snoozed and snoozed. So, since I ended up getting a sort of head start this morning, I also went ahead and headed downtown, and have just treated myself to a nice breakfast (egg white omelet with wheat toast).

Manon of the Spring

"La Lectrice" (which I keep hoping to find on DVD some day.  The scene where she is reading Lewis Carroll while having "intimate relations" is strange and hysterical - and strangely apropos too. The movie is also a loving tribute to reading and readers ("lectrices")).

Good morning!

The cool temps caused me (partly) to sleep half an hour later than usual, and as a result, I feel like I'm behind with my day (though I'm not: I cleaned the bedroom areas and did my workout which is my usual morning routine).

Goiong to get to 88 today, though. Ugh! The cool mornings spoil me and make me think the day will be cool, and we're not at that point yet (and are probably a month away from that point).

It's getting very warm outside.  I was going to walk up to 96th Street and back after mailing a package to Charlotte, but when I got to my post office, the automated postage machine was out of order - I don't know why the asses can't have at least two of them - and none of the ballpoint pens at any table were in working order. This is all par for the idiots who run the station, which has to be the worst in the City. So I stood in line with my unfilled-out delivery confirmation while I watched several postal clerks chat to each other and ignore the line of customers.  I figured I'd walk 14 blocks south to 68th Street where the post office branch has 3 - count 'em 3!!! - automated machines. I walked down Columbus Avenue and mailed the package, walked back up to the market and took care of my shopping.  Now I'm ready for a nap.

I don't know if i'm stepping out again today or not.

"Project Runway"

Fairly good competition last night.  The "safe three" who were in the middle of the pack didn't impress me too very much, I'm afraid, especially Blayne.

I thought Korto's ensemble was amazing, too, DR MattH.  She consistently turns in "the best" work in that competition, but has been rewarded only once (a few weeks back, IIRC).  Leanne's no slouche, but I don't think I would have given her the "winner" status for a second consecutive week (especially since I thought Korto's outfit last week was far superior).

Joe Faris seems to be on the Keith Bryce road to ruin.  He wins one competition and then his designs get worse and worse.  That horrendous hodgepodge he did in this competition was hideous.  The colors were awful.   I hated Suede's fabric choice.  As glad as I was to see the evictee leave, the truth is I thought Joe's ensemble much worse.

Jerrell's outfit was pretty nice, I guess, but the sad truth for me is that none of the men really seem destined for the final three.

Odd Thursday, this.

My main accomplishment this morning:  After about 80 minutes of discussion and trial-and-error kibitzing, an AT&T customer service rep managed to reset my cell phone's Voice Mail system so that I can actually "USE" it rather than complain that it doesn't work and nobody can fix it.

I called for a wholly different reason -- inability to make a call.  I learned that cell phones need to be turned off at least once every day or data being transmitted by the phone service (in my case, AT&T) cannot be properly cycled by the phone that is constantly "on".  In this case, it shut my phone down by making it impossible to make outgoing calls (or receive incoming ones).  I turned it off for 10 seconds.   That's all it took, and everything was back to normal.

The voice mail thing was something totally freaky...the first number I had programmed into my telephone book "somehow" became the number my voice mail started calling.  I took it to a Cingular store two years ago.  They were perplexed and told me it was a flaw in the phone.  They declared it could not be fixed.  I called Cingular and was told there was "no solution."

Now that Cingular belongs to AT&T, it seemed curious to me that this customer service rep was insistent that he could get my voice mail reset.  It took time...shuttin down and starting up and programming a new call number under voice mail...but ultimately it all paid off, it works and I'm thrilled to have voice mail again.

It's great when something actually goes your way, isn't it!

The stage was set for a showdown as a coalition of protesters told reporters a day earlier that it is ready to violate the expiration of its permit — now limited to a rally at the state Capitol between 5-6 p.m. ET Thursday — and march to the Xcel Energy Center, site of the GOP convention.

An array of groups have congregated in the city since last Saturday to make known its opposition to the candidate and his party. More than 400 people have been arrested and processed so far.

The Anti-War Committee, which is organizing Thursday’s march, urged people to join in and denounced the increased presence of police in riot gear and acts of “intimidation” in the streets.

Judicious use of high-pressure water cannons could put short work of this radical lawlessness.

Maybe someone should post a Remember Kent State sign!

If they have a permit, then it surely isn't "lawless."  Seems to me they're exercising their freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.  What a message it sends when protestors -- using non-violence -- are being so ruthlessly prosecuted in this supposed land of liberty and freedom.

Lunch! -Which, for me today, consists of two filled buns (no euphemism intended) and a tapioca mlikshake from the Chinese bakery around the corner. Well... "consisted" by this point and time. ;)

For a moment there I thought Jose was going to tell us he ate something ORDINARY for lunch. Where'd I get that idea?? He proved me wrong in any case. A tapioca milkshake, huh?

They have stated an intent to violate the permit - then it is lawless, and vigorous action should be taken.

The anarchists have made clear they are spoiling for a point - they shouild not be dissappointed.

PS Per the other day, I think the hooligans conducting the Boston Tea Party were misdirecting their anger at the government toward private property and should have been prosecuted.

I just need a written-down version of that how to pose maneuver to send on to this relative.  Three or four lines would eb great.

Will this be for a portrait shot, by themself? Or as part of a group?

If by themself, first tell them up front that it will feel uncomfortable to "pose", but it will look great on film.

I like the "turn and squat and look":

Look toward the camera, then TURN your body to the left or right about 45 to 90 degrees.

SQUAT down as comfortably as you can go, leaning forward slightly too if possible.

LOOK towards the camera, craning your neck as much as you comfortably can. Then have the photographer shoot your face. Again,it will feel a little uncomfortable and "posed", but the resulting pics look great. *If you seen a couple of opera singer photos you'll notice a lot of leaning shots. **And if look at my 8x10s on Facebook, I am actually sitting back on my ankles in all of them.

These issues are still working their way through the court system, but in brief:

I think the government should have unlimited acess to monitor electronic communications.

The Geneva convention does not apply to non-uniformed irregulars captured on a battlefield - we are not technical at war, so there are no POWs.

The Katrina mess was just poor management - not criminal conduct; more than enough blame to go around.

Most members of the Justice department serve at the will of the President - he doesn't need a reason to not renew an appointment.

Not long - but I suspect we would have simply "taken -over", installed a puppet government and planned for a long term occupation.

The simple fact, clearly overlooked, is that it was Saddam's ruthless dictatorship that kept the "peace" in place (as it was the Ottoman Empire that kept things in check before WWI).

Cops Use Facebook to Try to Find Mom of Abandoned Newborn[/b] (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,416882,00.html[b)

Quote
British Police are scouring Facebook for clues in the case of a dead baby dumped at a recycling plant, the Sun reported.

The body of a newborn girl was discovered among piles of garbage at a recycling site in Cambridgeshire last week.

Authorities suspect the mother may be a teen who kept her pregnancy secret from family and friends. That’s why detectives in the area are using social networking sites, including Facebook and MySpace, for any leads on potentially pregnant teen girls, according to the Sun.

"While we are still keeping an open mind about where this baby came from and why it was necessary to put her body into the city waste system, we want to get as many young people as possible thinking about whether they know someone who could be this mother in distress,” Detective Inspector Adrian Todd told the Sun.

“It may be that they are aware of a girl unusually putting on weight or behaving out of the ordinary in the way she dressed and behaved.

“Anyone with even the slightest suspicion should not dismiss any thoughts as being not important.”

Oh great - using Facebook to encourage teenage gossip!

Why is it so vital to find the poor mother?

I'm being very lazy right now - but soon I'll be having a lovely meal with the Wechter person, and we'll be working our way through a couple of hours of food and chat.  We're going to the new Studio City location of Jinky's - they have lots of wonderful egg dishes and decent Buffalo wings, so I think I'll do Eggs Benedict and fruit and split some Buffalo wings.

der Brucer

Muffin - 100 calories
Ham (or Canadian bacon) - amount used app. 100 calories
Two eggs - app. 200 calories
Hollandaise - maybe 400 calories with the amount they use

Total for Eggs Benedict - 800 calories.  No prob there.

But, if I want to be really good, I'll just do poached eggs on an English muffin for a total of 400 calories.

An item of interest for CLOSER fans:
"Closer" spinoff in the works at TNT
Thu Sep 4, 2008 1:39am EDT
By Kimberly Nordyke

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Hit cable drama "The Closer" is eyeing a spinoff.

The forces behind the TNT series, including creator/executive producer James Duff, are working on a spinoff of the cop drama, which stars Kyra Sedgwick as a deputy police chief who has a love-hate relationship with junk food.

It's unclear whether the untitled spinoff -- referred to in industry circles as "The Fixer" -- would focus on an existing "Closer" character or an altogether new one. Duff is co-writing the story with "Closer" co-executive producer Adam Belanoff and Michael Berchem.

TNT confirmed that it has ordered a script for the spinoff but declined comment on other details.

"Closer" has become a ratings powerhouse for TNT, setting several cable ratings records, starting with its debut, which in 2005 became the most-watched series premiere on ad-supported cable. The record has since been broken, but "Closer" still ranks No. 3 on that list.

Sedgwick has won a Golden Globe for her role and is up for an Emmy -- her third nomination -- this month.

TNT is the latest network to explore a spinoff from its top series. CBS twice spun its hit crime drama "CSI." ABC's spinoff from "Grey's Anatomy," "Private Practice," is returning for a second season, while "The Cleveland Show," Fox's spinoff from "Family Guy," launches in midseason. Additionally, NBC is working on a spinoff from "The Office," and Fox and the CW are eyeing potential offshoots of "House" and "Gossip Girl," respectively.

On cable, Showtime is prepping a spinoff of "The L Word," and the Sci Fi Channel is piloting a prequel to its signature series "Battlestar Galactica."

I'm here I'm here I'm here!!! Thank you for the birthday wishes, I got a few very sweet emails from old friends, it was grand. I know I'm never here anymore, but I promise that I'm never anywhere except in a practice room!

Update de ma vie: I am currently a Junior Vocal Performance major at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. I have recently switched to Performance from a Music Education degree, because I realized that while I love choir and school, I never want to be in charge of both simultaneously.

Ironically, I am the president of our American Choral Directors Association student chapter, which I love, and I am currently swamped planning our annual Choralfest, a weekend festival where almost 200 high school students come to JMU and sing alongside the JMU Chorale members under the director of a clinician. This year we're bringing Dr. Jerry Blackstone from the University of Michigan. He's amazing, it's going to be a very exciting and educational weekend.

I've also just been cast in our production of Cosi fan Tutte, where I'm primarily ensemble and understudy to Dorabella (there is an amazing senior class this year who, naturally, beat out everyone else).

I just finished up the 11th annual Staunton Music Festival in Staunton, Virginia, where my choir from JMU, the Madison Singers, act as choir-in-residence. We performed a wandering madrigals concert, a Schoenberg concert, Vivaldi's Gloria (in which I had the mezzo solos), and we acted as opera chorus in Handel's Acis and Galatea under the direction of Jennifer Lane. The music festival is an outstanding opportunity for young artists to learn and grow as musicians, and they bring musicians from across the world to participate (the Baroque orchestra is SERIOUSLY legitimate, you should check out the website and read their biographies- world class!!!). The Festival is the brainchild of harpsichordist and conductor Carsten Schmidt.

This summer I worked every day at the newest location of the Clyde's Restaurant Group (pretty popular, classy restaurant group in DC, I'm sure many of you have heard of it!) where I was a server. I made very good money, but the workload was intense. I also had to take 3 weeks off to have knee surgery- last October I tore the meniscus, and because I waited so long to treat it, they ended up removing every last BIT of my cartilage, and I'm stuck taking pills for the rest of my life! Ah, well.

Ummm...personal life, I've been dating the most incredible person for almost 14 months, his name is Tim, and I love him to death. He's a geological tunnel engineer, currently working on the metro extension from DC to Tyson's Corner in Northern Virginia. We are nerds together and couldn't be happier!

I do miss you all...I love reading posts from time to time and catching up, but it's rare that I have spare time to sit still, let alone get on the computer and stay for an hour or so. It is so sweet that you all still wish me a happy birthday every year- I'm lucky to have such long lasting friendships! EVEN YOU JRAND!!!!!!!!

How is everyone?

Well my birthday was on Sunday, so Saturday night at midnight my boyfriend took me out, and surprised me with a big gathering of about 20 of my friends at a local cafe/bar in the area! I'm one of the oldest of my friends, so he had made arrangements with the owner to let my underage friends in anyway with marked hands, so that we could be together. I happen to have very generous and giving friends who were kind enough to buy me drinks, and I had a very, very nice time :). On Sunday, Tim and I visited a bunch of vineyards in the Shenandoah Valley, and then my family came down to take us out to dinner. It was low key and fun!

I mastered the picture problem on my own!!! Huzzah

-And, yes... Today turned out to be another long day - well a full day - with Disney.  I guess this makes up for all those days where I'm booked - and paid! - for eight hours, but only ended up working two.

Today's auditionees were, overall, a better group of talent, but there were still some "hot boxes of crazy" who came in to show us what they got - and then some! Alas, some of those "boxes" also walked out of the room with the most dejected expressions once they realized they were not being asked to stay for a callback. Ah, well... :-\

And everyone really does have a "good side" and "bad side" when it comes to their faces being photographed.  Be sure to have the photographer take pics from/of both sides - unless your relative already knows their good side.

As "Tip 2" stated, by turning toward the camera, it lengthens the muscles in your neck.  The turning also ends up pulling down some of the flesh in your face too at the same time.

You can also modify that position by jutting your head forward - almost "like and Egyptian".  Again, it will feel uncomfortable, but it will look good.  *And I believe I gave you that coaching at the gathering last week, and I have the photographic evidence too! ;)

He just left after setting up my glucose meter, and my blood glcose level 10 minutes ago was 173!

But he forgot to take the CD of Moross' music for "The Cardinal" and other films.

You're most welcome, DR elmore.

And I guess I'll just have to come back next week to pick up the Moross CD.  Spoo!

*And I think you should try to do another "Control" testing tomorrow morning.  -Remember, you put the strip in first, then push the button when you do the Control test.

And what about the proposed split order of Buffalo Wings?

I am kinda looking forward to that WORST WEEK tv show that I keep seeing ads for.

Other then that one I am not sure what new shows are on for this fall.

You do know that the leading man does not appear in every episode in that "diaper" that they show him in in the commercials.  ;)

Thanks again, Jose!!!   I'll cut-and-paste and pass along that info.

I may just head to bed early and wake up early to get ready for my trip - a.k.a. pack.  My flight doesn't leave until 10:00, so if I got up at 7:00, I'd plenty of time to get things together.  -Especially since I already laid out my clothes last night when I was doing laundry.  Again, we shall see...

Now, Jose, how did you search that.  When I try to search the notes archive I just get error messages.

Well, there's something called "Google".  Have you heard of it?  ;D

I just entered "valachi" and "haineshisway" - and only three results came up.  I did have to change the "domain" of the archived notes to "haineshisway.com" - the old domain numbers are still cached in their search engine, I guess.

*And one of the other "results" centered around CD track timings.  I started reading some of it, but then got a headache, so I stopped.  ;)

I had never thought of searching that way - very clever!  I read through that thread, too, and it gave me a headache when it was happening and gave me a headache now.

It was funny. The things that McCain said that I liked, the audience barely clapped at. But the things that he said that made me bristle, the audience seemed to be overjoyed at.

It is my opinion that these people in the audience prefer divisivness and violence to solve problems.

My sentiments, exactly.

I'm now watching the fifth episode of "Mad Men."  I know it's after midnight, but I just got started and I want to watch it...so I am. :)
