Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sweet and had clarity, and now it is time for you to post until the clear cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: MISOGAMY!
-
Welcome twelve GUESTS.
-
I'm tired but not ready to go to bed yet.
-
Make that thirteen GUESTS.
-
Make that twelve GUESTS. People come, people go, like grand hotel.
-
Make that eleven GUESTS.
-
Make that ten GUESTS. Was it something I said. Did a couple of disappearing GUESTS need some clarity because let me tell you I'd be more than happy to give it to them.
-
I am my own frenzy.
-
Back up to twelve GUESTS.
-
Anyone for tennis?
-
Anyone care to do the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance)?
-
I gotta tell you.
-
I won't dance, don't ask me.
-
Make that fifteen GUESTS. People come, people go, like Grand Hotel.
-
Perhaps I'll tell the story of The Randy Vicar and the Cherry Ripe.
-
It's taking forever to post posts.
-
I was errant and truant all day, yesterday. I was here at home, but I was watching something that I had recorded onto my DVD burner from a VHS tape and I was creating chapter breaks. The problem was that near the end of the second disc (of what will be a two-disc set), I accidentally deleted a chapter entirely off the DVD burner instead of merging two chapters to eliminate a chapter break that I had put in the wrong place. :P I still have the videotape, but now I have to go through the whole process for the second disc, again.
-
George must have brought some GUESTS with him - welcome eighteen GUESTS.
-
Perhaps if George hadn't been errant and truant all day yesterday, he wouldn't have deleted the chapter. Just a thought.
-
Make that nineteen GUESTS. Who ARE you people?
-
And then at 4:00 pm, I left to pick up my sister so that we could go to a Seattle Storm game. They won! We had actually left at half time and didn't see any of the second half because my sister was getting a little tired and I didn't mind leaving. She does't like big crowds and last night, the arena was very crowded, although not sold out. We stopped at Borders in Tacoma on our way back and I bought the 2-CD "World Premiere Complete Recording" to Annie: The Broadway Musical (yes, I'm a quasi-completist ;)) and the "Off-Broadway Premiere Recording" to Gone Missing. I don't know anything about this show. I hope it at least doesn't suck. :)
-
Perhaps if George hadn't been errant and truant all day yesterday, he wouldn't have deleted the chapter. Just a thought.
I don't doubt that this is true. Oh, well...live and learn. ;D
-
Today, I'm working concessions for a local group, Wrinkles of Washington (everyone is at least 55 years old!) and their show, "Wrinkles in Paradise (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/calendar/calendar_detail.asp?event_id=1023)" at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. After that, I'll come home and re-chapterize the videotape that I screwed up.
-
But now, I'm off to bed. Good night, BK and all you little guests out there in the darkness. :D
-
CONGRATULATIONS, DR Cillaliz, on your lofty new perch in the HHW clouds!!! :)

A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO ONE-TIME DEAR READER NOW OCCASIONAL DEAR READER AND LURKER WILLIAM E. LURIE!!!

Happy Happy Birthday to DR William E. Lurie!

DR Cillaliz - I think I posted travel times from Bethesda to Signature last night. I think. In any case...
About a 30-40 minute in "regular" traffic - Mapquest may say otherwise. About a 45-60 minute trip on the Metro coupled with a taxi ride from Pentagon City.

In my never ending quest to get a recording of every single song ever nominated for an Academy Award......
MY WISHING DOLL from Hawaii
I watch the scene where the song is sung. It last 30 SECONDS!!!
Does anyone know if in the road show version their is a longer version?
In the clip I saw it picks up in the middle somewhere as Max Von Sydow walks down the stairs and hears Julie Andrews and abruptly ends when she sees him standing there.
If this is the only time it is sung......
How in the H-e-double hockey sticks did it get nominated?? Were there any other worthy songs that were looked over?
-
How in the H-e-double hockey sticks did it get nominated?? Were there any other worthy songs that were looked over?
I believe DR Druxy's posts about the Sammy Fain song a few days ago may answer that question.
-
And I believe I have about 170 people to play for today. Well, there are about 170 people auditioning, but that doesn't mean all of them will be singing. However, I do have to sit through all of them. So...
Laters...
-
What?!?! No posts in 25 minutes?
;D
-
...And the official number is 176. However, there will inevitably be some no-shows and withdrawals, so it looks like it won't be that long a day. I hope.
-
And since the auditionees are about to come into the theater...
Laters...
-
Good morning, all! I am up and moving about but still very sleepy. Perhaps I'll pull a DR MBarnum and lounge on the sofa all day.
Actually, today I have to talk to the copyist on the Jerome Moross project, pick up a CD from Kip Wilborn, write a bit aboutCinderella and Victor Herbert, and vacuum the apartment.
Beyond that, who knows?
-
Thanks for the "dips" suggestions yesterday.
DR Jane, re: the sour cream/onion soup mix. I used to have that a lot.
Sour cream/salsa - reminds me of when the 7 layer dips layers get mixed. I think this one might be good with chips (not as sure about carrots).
Ranch dressing. I guess it would depend what kind. I'm not that fond of bottled dressings lately and have been making my own.
I guess i need to decide whether to make something i'll love vs the rest of the guests. :)
-
Would anybody like to buy my animals?
2 dogs and a cat.
Any animals that wake me up at 5:45 on a Sunday morning are for sale...cheap.
>:(
-
No, just kidding.
They wouldn't be cheap.
;)
-
And they're not for sale.
:D
-
And the word of the day is: MISOGAMY!
A.K.A. marriage with tofu.
-
How in the H-e-double hockey sticks did it get nominated?? Were there any other worthy songs that were looked over?
The competition that year was probably very weak.
The year that "A World That Never Was" got nominated, the only serious competition was Streisand's "Evergreen," which won, and "Gonna Fly Now" from ROCKY.
You're right when you say that, back in the day, the old guard in the Music Branch of the Academy often nominated their "friends," but you still had to had a good song. Webster and Fain wrote many songs over the years that were NOT nominated.
And, unless you had the #1 hit, you also had to mount a good campaign with trade ads, sending records to everybody in the Music Branch, and so forth.
-
Question: What was the last Oscar-winning song that has actually become a "standard"?
Or, that we even remember?
The nominated songs for the last several years are so bland and forgettable that, I'll bet you'll have to go back a decade or more to find the answer.
-
Now that I've thrown down the gauntlet, I'm going to go walk my barking dogs.
Maybe I'll even let them play in traffic.
;)
-
Just a thought, but, wouldn't "My Heart Will Go On" be the last time that an Oscar winning song went on to be a standard?
-
Then again, there are the songs which won Oscars from animated films which could be considered standards:
Beauty and the Beast
Colors of the Wind
A Whole New World
When You Believe
I don't think that "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" has the legs to become a standard. That's just my humble opinion.
-
DR Michael S - I found a recording of "My Wishing Doll," which I did forward to DR tomovoz, now just let me find it again, and I'll make sure that you receive it.
-
And the word of the day is: MISOGAMY!
And The Song Of The Day Is: GETTING MARRIED TODAY
-
Back from dog walking.
Everybody is safe.
I would agree that "My Heart Will Go On" is the last Oscar-winning song to achieve true standard status.
-
Sunday morning greetings! I'm drinking my coffee today out of my MOM mug to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of becoming a mother. Rob was pleased to receive a Target gift card from us and now he, Mary Linda, and Richard are off to church. Later, I'll pick up my mom and we'll all meet at Montgomery Inn for late lunch/early dinner.
-
Happiest of birthdays to DR William E. Lurie!
-
HAPPY NATAL DAY, DR WILLIAM E LURIE!
-
Good morning!
It was fairly warm last night, but I awoke to a coller morning than I expected. Still, the inside of the house felt pleasant, so I didn't open up the house. May not get to do that again until later in the week as it looks to be hot and humid for the first part of the week.

No, the roadshow version contains the same little snippet. I'm with you--I love the tune (the lyric is rather ridiculous), but how the song got nominated is beyond me, especially when the ultra-luscious "Maybe September" from "The Oscar" was a finalist that year.
-
Happy Birthday to former DR William E. Lurie.
-
I may be doing a kind of fun gig (they have little to no money, so they must meet my imperious salary demands before I agree, LOL). A bunch of Second City alum have moved to PDX and are doing an improvised musical and they need a MD who can play in a traditional Broadway style whilst making it up as he goes along. Sounds like fun, and would circumvent one of the main things I hate about doing shows--playing the same stuff over and over and over.
-
On TV tonight is the premiere on HBO of TRUE BLOOD, the vampire series adapted by Oscar and Emmy-winning Alan Ball.
ENTOURAGE begins its new season tonight. I wasn't going to watch as I thought last season was very poor, but TV GUIDE's Matt Roush has seen the first several episodes and claims the show is rebounding from a bad last season. So I guess I will record it and watch later in the week.
MAD MEN
-
I'll be back in Miami today with Horatio, Calleigh, Eric, Ryan, Frank, and Natalia for most of the day. Will only stop to watch TRUE BLOOD around 10 p.m. or so.

I read that the eastern part of the state got about 6 inches of rain from Hanna. We got .01 inch of rain. What a difference a few miles can make with one of these storms.

I read that the eastern part of the state got about 6 inches of rain from Hanna. We got .01 inch of rain. What a difference a few miles can make with one of these storms.
That make me very concerned about our friends who just returned to their boat in the Portsmouth, VA, area.
-
Yesterday in the afternoon the rains came. They weren't bad and in Manhattan it was nothing more than a long rainstorm but now that Hanna has gonna it's a beautiful Sunday in New York (Bobby Darrin).
Hanna Montana - OMG! Do tweens have no taste mechanism at all???
The Suite Life of Zack and Cody - I repeat myself - OMG! Do tweens have no taste mechanism at all???

Eeek! I have several days of ketchup, but before doing so, I wanted to wish William E. Lurie a very happy birthday!

Thanks for the weather vibes. They worked for us...we haven't even had a drop of rain.
I hope the weather will be good next weekend; I'm taking my brother on a short trip---I've been worried about him; he really needs a break in his routine a big way.
-
You sly dog, you don't have a sofa ;)
We could offer you the chair. (A Chad Mitchell Trio reference)
I've finished all my Vicotr Herbert updates, I'm happy to say, and now I have to phone a copyist and good friend about Jerome Moross.
After that, back to the Moross edits.

bk, congratulations on your continued weight loss. Your determination and discipline are inspiring. I have made much slower progress so I don't need a belt yet. (Well, maybe a gin and tonic...)

Dear Elmore, I have been thinking of you many times every day. I'm glad you are coping with your diagnosis with such good humor. We have diabetes in my family and folks like my mom's brother have coped with it very well by following the doctor's orders and their own research.
Of course, they didn't have friends as sweet as Jose, but they've managed!

And a hearty congratulations to our dear Ginny on her well-derserved retirement, and a smooth entry into the fun, productive and sometimes lucrative freelance world!
Thank you, DR Edi! This feels a lot like 23 years ago when I left a good job to be a stay-at-home mom, except I'm much more financially secure now. In that 12 years, opportunities came to me that prepared me for this last third of my public employment tenure.

And, for Jane, the wordified version:
IKE's track stays south as it moves over Hispaniola and Cuba, temporarily weakening in strength - thus all of Florida, save the Keys, appears out of danger.
By 8Am Tuesday, Ike should be entering the Gulf of Mexico as a CAT 1
If by 8AM Wednesday, Ike is still on track, Florida will be safe and the Gulf Coast in real trouble!
By 8AM Friday, Ike is predicted to be back up to CAT 3 and be off the coast of LA

There's Paul Francis Webster again.
During his career, Webster earned 11-13 Oscar nominations [Don't recall the exact number] and won 3 times.
He was a fascinating man. Collected historical autographs. He had signatures (i.e. letters or whatever) from all the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
He lived in Beverly Hills on Crescent Drive, two doors down from Doris Day. Once, when Los Angeles was experiencing some terrific rain storms, a warning went out that a dam overlooking BH might overflow, flooding the city.
Over a period of several hours, Webster carried all of his priceless autographs up to the 3rd floor of his house, so that they would remain safe.
Then, as soon as he'd finished that exhausing job, they caalled an "All Clear," and he had to carry them all back down.

I think the point being questioned was the number of songs OTHER than the ones nominated that might have qualified in the place of "My Wishing Doll." Looking back over the films of 1966, I'd say the song writer branch of the Academy certainly got most of the strongest songs in the competition pool.

I believe DR Jane was saying that she could read those maps (from Fox news). It was some others she was having a problem with.

Speaking of films of 1966, did Henry Mancini have a song in ARABESQUE that might have qualified? I just noticed that 1966 was the first time in a number of years that he didn't have a song up for Best Song.

In other news...
The cake was good. Of course, I would have preferred chocolate, but I also can't seem to recall the last time I had white cake, so it was to get reacquainted.

True to my word, I spent the afternoon with the CSI gang in Miami. The first of the untalented Elizabeth Berkley's guest shots was one of the episodes I watched. Also there was a commentary attached to the episode with Rex Linn (who plays Frank Tripp) embarrassingly slobbering over Elizabeth Berkley who's also there in the sound booth with him. He keeps telling her how HOT she is; I can't believe he has no more class than that.
-
In all, I got five more episodes watched this afternoon. I still have three more on the disc currently in the player, all of which I should be able to get done tonight before start watching TRUE BLOOD. Hopefully, I can get even more than three watched.

I'm on break until 6:00, and then I just have an hour with Disney. I did just have some Indian food (some Chili Chicken and "falooda"), and that actually might end being my final meal of the day except for a piece of fruit back at the hotel. We shall see.
In the meantime, I'm just hanging out outside and defrosting (the theater is cold!!
-
Hmmm... It seems like some of "locals" out here of the streets of uptown Charlotte are having a fight. Guess it's time to move inside. ???
-
Dotty
;)
Hmmm Dotty, Callie and Boo. That has a good ring to it
-
Are you registered with ZipCar?
www.zipcar.com
Hmm haven't really heard of this before I'll take a look at it but I'm not sure I could get my card before I leave on Thursday
-
Heading back down now to clean the guest bath, put away the folded laundry, and then head back to Miami for more adventures in sleuthing.
WBBL.
-
It is very hardd to type with Joshie sprawled on the keyboard.
-
The only thing I remember from El Cid's lyric is the opening two lines:
Be mine, love
On a cold winter's night, love
-
There is a song from Arabesque, called We've Loved Before - I have no memory of it, however - the lyric is by Livingston and Evans.
-
In doing my planning I realized that my flight leaves for DC at 6:10 AM. So I'll be leaving here Thursday Evening. Pet/Housesitter is all lined up. I've pretty much decided I'm going to get a car in DC. There are just too many hours when I have to be out of the hotel or can't check in yet and would either have to valet check my luggage (which I won't do for my laptop - which I'll need) or lug it akk around.
I have discounts with my membership in some of my organizations and can get a car for 3 days for about the price of round trip cab fare from the airport to the hotel. So, this way I'll be free to do exploring either via the metro or via car. I had forgotten how much free time I have 7 hours on Friday and about 5 hours on Sunday.
Cool! This may be part vacation after all..
-
Back from the book fair. Lots of dealers there, but very few customers. Apparently yesterday was better, but not by much. I'm thinking that book dealers just don't give a crap about the economy and what it's doing to people, because their prices are higher than ever before. I saw a book there that I sold to a dealer three or four years ago for $800. He sold it to a dealer and now that dealer has a price of $5000 on it. Puhleeze. One book that this particular dealer passed on because I wouldn't let him jerk me around was Blazing Guns On The Chisum Trail, which is the source novel for the film Red River. There was a copy at the fair today for $6,500 - yes, it was less problematic than mine, but not by much.
-
The Murphy clan and I will be meeting at Genghis Cohen at 5:30. Good eatin' ahead!
-
DR Michael S - I found a recording of "My Wishing Doll," which I did forward to DR tomovoz, now just let me find it again, and I'll make sure that you receive it.
NO You didn't! Maybe it is next to "Applause" :)
I did buy the Charlie Byrd version which I am quite happy to record for Michael.
(To whom I sent an email with offer some weeks ago!). Now it will have to wait until November.
Of course as a retired person I have all the time in the world so I shall not cast aspertions, assertions, nasturtiums or pearls :)
-
Question: What was the last Oscar-winning song that has actually become a "standard"?
Or, that we even remember?
The nominated songs for the last several years are so bland and forgettable that, I'll bet you'll have to go back a decade or more to find the answer.
"It's hard out Here For a Pimp" and "Lose Yourself". Two wonderful standards in the making.
DR FJL probably sings them in the shower.
-
I have never seen sheet music and/or the lyric to the El Cid theme--can anyone post it?
Billy Storm has a pop vocal version of the theme.
Remind me in November!
-
Back to packing etc.
Happy Birthday Bill.
-
We're STILL on page five? How unseemly. WEHT WEHT WEHT already.
-
So it is written, so it shall be done - page six.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR WEL!
-
The only thing I remember from El Cid's lyric is the opening two lines:
Be mine, love
On a cold winter's night, love
The version I have (which I think is the "official" version, copyright 1961 by Samuel Bronston), starts "A bell rings/In the hush of the evening." There is a line later that goes, "So be mine love and like warm winter wine, love".
-
Back from our Montgomery Inn birthday celebration for DS Rob. Thanks to DRs Jose, Singdaw, DakotaCelt, TCB, and td for the birthday wishes for him!
-
DR Cillaliz - if I had a girl giraffe, I'd name her Audrey (as in Hepburn).
-
I took DR MShayne's comments that way, too, Matt, which is why I mentioned "Maybe September." I'm not sure if they still do it the same way, but back then the Academy music department used to winnow down the pool to ten or so finalists, from which the final five nominees were culled. I have an old Academy list somewhere and "Maybe September" was one of the 10 finalists that year but didn't make the cut to be an actual nominee. IMHO, it far deserved a nomination more than "Wishing Doll." That said, Bernstein far more deserved to win for "Hawaii" than for "Thoroughly Modern Millie," for crying out loud. (The stupidest scoring Oscar ever, IMHO).
-
Right now i'm going to watch the end of this week's america's next top model.
Then i'll watch Big Brother.
-
NO You didn't! Maybe it is next to "Applause" :)
I did buy the Charlie Byrd version which I am quite happy to record for Michael.
(To whom I sent an email with offer some weeks ago!). Now it will have to wait until November.

I was indeed referring to the Charlie Byrd recording. . .
Cast whatever you will my way, but have a great trip on the Continent!
-
My pants are fitting better. The pairs that were too tight are now wearable. The pairs that i couldn't get into, i can now get into and do up (but they are a bit tight to be comfortable in). But my goal is to be able to wear the pairs that i still cannot even get into. So not sure if that is like 10lbs or what.
I've been a bit more lax on the weekends. Went out for dinner yesterday and had a half a smoke meat sandwich and fries. And then i had a reese peanut butter cup ( had made a batch for my sister's niece).
And today i had lunch at costco (hot dog and fries).
I don't cheat at all during the week. So this was a good change.
The only thing i'd really like to change is to start doing more exercise. I have not been doing anything except for jogging lightly on my rebounder trampoline (since i aggravated the muscles in my neck/shoulder).
So i think i would feel better if i was biking and exercising a lot more!
-
And now I'm really done for the day. -And it looks there are only about two-hours worth of auditionees tomorrow morning followed by an hour of callbacks for Disney. And then the plane ride back to NYC.
-
DR Cillaliz - WTOP 103.5 FM and 1500 AM - "Traffic On The 8's"
;)
-
And now it's time for dinner.
Laters...
-
"It's hard out Here For a Pimp" and "Lose Yourself". Two wonderful standards in the making.
DR FJL probably sings them in the shower.
What has the Music Branch come to?
What has song writing come to?
:'(
-
No day but today.
-
What has the Music Branch come to?
What has song writing come to?
:'(
I know I date myself, but I think that the 1969 Best Song Oscar (given in 1970) was the last group of all-great nominees.
-
I'm being lazy right now, but shall be leaving for supper in about forty minutes.
-
Would anybody like to buy my animals?
2 dogs and a cat.
Any animals that wake me up at 5:45 on a Sunday morning are for sale...cheap.
>:(
;D
-
DR Cillaliz - if I had a girl giraffe, I'd name her Audrey (as in Hepburn).
Ohhh, that's a good one too
-
DR Cillaliz - WTOP 103.5 FM and 1500 AM - "Traffic On The 8's"
;)
Thanks! Got the car reserved and I had a coupon for a free weekend day, so it really may be the same as cab fare to have a car the whole time. Being from a part of the country where you don't feel right without a car, I am glad to have one to use,.
-
If I had a girl giraffe, I'd name her Gammie, because of her great gams.
-
When we were in Yellowstone a few years ago, Zach said he'd like a buffalo for a pet. We asked him what he would name his pet buffalo. "Buffalo," he responded. :)
-
I did think of Gigi
-
Right now I think that Dotty is winning
-
Ok, time to decide if I'm going to eat food.
-
And, for Jane, the wordified version:
Thank you :)
-
Ok, time to decide if I'm going to eat food.
That would be an easy decision for me.
-
Which might be my problem.
-
A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR WILLIAM E. LURIE!!!
-
Great giraffe names....but she's a girl. Even girl giraffe's have horns.
In honor of her Papa George, how about Georgie?
-
There's a new episode of Iron Chef America tonight, followed by the pemere of Alton Brown's new miniseries, Feasting on Waves, where he explores the Caribbean. Typical Alton, the first episode is titled "Sugar on Isle One."
-
DR MBarnum - last night I watched BLACK and enjoyed if very much. Have you seen it? It's gorgeous to look at with a compelling narrative. There are no songs or dances.
-
I believe DR Jane was saying that she could read those maps (from Fox news). It was some others she was having a problem with.
Thank you for the compliment, however I don't read maps. Alright, sometimes I read street maps, or road maps, but it takes me forever to do so.
-
I have discounts with my membership in some of my organizations and can get a car for 3 days for about the price of round trip cab fare from the airport to the hotel. So, this way I'll be free to do exploring either via the metro or via car. I had forgotten how much free time I have 7 hours on Friday and about 5 hours on Sunday.
Is parking free at the hotel in Bethesda?

Is that the one that is like THE MIRACLE WORKER? I have not seen it.
-
From Jose:
Jose: And now I'm watching the end of "Catch Me If You Can" on ABC... I think this is the only film where I actually like Leonardo Di Caprio.
Have you seen THIS BOY'S LIFE?
SAFE & EASY TRAVEL VIBES TOMORROW!
-
DR elmore, thank you for the news on DR FJL. The celebration last night sounds lovely.
DR Jennifer, congrats on your weight loss.
DR Cilla, I think Gigi is a cute name & goes well with giraffe, as does Georgie. ;)
-
From Matt H.
I suspect your house doesn't need it nearly as much as mine does.
You must be kidding, my house not only has Sherlock living in it but it has me.
From DB:
O sure! I bet your place would pass a "ready for open heart surgery" inspection
;D I bet you aren't far from the truth.
-
I shall now be on my way to Genghis Cohen, after which I shall return.
-
I just watched Fellini's LA DOLCE VITA, a film I had always wanted to see and never had. And now that I have, i'm pondering it.I think I respected it more than I liked it, but I've always had problems with Fellini films. I'm also pondering how to proceed with a dirty trick I suspect someone's pulling on me, so there will be more information to follow on that front. Once I'm certain.
-
The version I have (which I think is the "official" version, copyright 1961 by Samuel Bronston), starts "A bell rings/In the hush of the evening." There is a line later that goes, "So be mine love and like warm winter wine, love".
The Billy Storm version starts with the line "Be Mine Love...."
-
I may have (who knows?) just emailed the Storm version to you DR JMK
-
They probably redid the lyric for pop consumption. No email yet. :(
-
Dinner tonight is a re-run: stuffed bell peppers, with tomato sauce.
-
I've tried again DR JMK.
Also sent the Hawaii song to Michael Shayne.
-
Is that the one that is like THE MIRACLE WORKER? I have not seen it.
That's the one! It even acknowledges The Helen Keller Foundation.
I rented it because it was from the same director as SAAWIRYA, which I still think is incredible.
-
It takes quite a while for the MP3 emails to get through the virus protection etc.
-
I know I date myself, but I think that the 1969 Best Song Oscar (given in 1970) was the last group of all-great nominees.
Wow! I date myself, too!
I even go to bed with myself on the first date.
-
Oh, I will not be scorekeeping tomorrow. I'll be at work.
You will have to deal with der B instead. Sorry about that.
-
In honor of her Papa George, how about Georgie?
Or Georgette?
-
There's a new episode of Iron Chef America tonight, followed by the pemere of Alton Brown's new miniseries, Feasting on Waves, where he explores the Caribbean. Typical Alton, the first episode is titled "Sugar on Isle One."
Who is Alton Brown?
-
Who is Alton Brown?
Alton Brown briefly employed Edi a few years back.
-
Alton Brown briefly employed Edi a few years back.
Did Edi cook up a storm?
-
If that fishing guy logs on here could someone give him my thanks for the good wishes that I inadvertently read yesterday.
-
Tomovoz, it came, but it is the version I mentioned--if you listen, you'll see he (she? what is that singing, anyway? ;) ) starts on the final 8, then comes in at the bridge and does the final 8 again. The first 16 are never sung at all. And so it is that snippet I quoted--"Be mine, love and like warm winter wine, love."
-
DR JMK The email has now left OZ. You may get it again though!
-
Did Edi cook up a storm?
Doesn't she always?
-
DR JMK The email has now left OZ. You may get it again though!
See above, sir. Thanks--I'd never heard that before.
-
Time to get dinner tabled.
-
Or Georgette?
She is just a baby so I went with Georgie.
-
DS Craig needs some powerful job vibes.
He has run out of time, job or no job they will be relocating. The apartment building will be sold at auction & everyone has to move by the end of the month. Since they have to move they will move to a city with a better chance of getting a job.
What he really needs is a job BEFORE he rents the new apartment!
-
Billy Storm was from Dayton Ohio.
He had a top 40 hit with "I've Come of Age" in 1959. (Tchaikowsky's melody from the 5th)
I suspect the El Cid track is ultra rare.
Storm was lead singer of the R & B group "The Valients"
-
I have no idea how to stop an email in progress so I guess you will have multiple Cids DR JMK.
-
Powerful job vibes for DR Jane's DS Craig!
-
If that fishing guy logs on here could someone give him my thanks for the good wishes that I inadvertently read yesterday.
Dear Tom,
:-*
-
Thank you for your birthday wishes. I am not just an occasional dear reader... I have read this daily since the very first day of the original HHW... I just don't post as much as I used to.
It took me so long to reply because I spent my birthday at Lincoln Center seeing the glorious new production of SOUTH PACIFIC - a show which was the first musical I ever saw on my 9th Birthday. This production is a model of what I have said for years about revivals - if you trust the material you don't need to rewrite the book and alter the score. Every revival producer should see this and maybe there will be more revivals and less revisals.
-
Good job vibes to DR Jane's DS Craig!

I’m glad you shared your birthday activities with us. :)

Thank you DRs Ginny, TCB.
DRs TCB & George, how about some extra vibes he ends up in your part of the country?
-
Evidently Dennis Miller is Tevye (see the top of the page ad).
-
That would be an easy decision for me.
I haven't stopped eating this weekend and I never seem to get full. Not a good thing if you ask me, but it hasnt' stopped me any
-
In addition to posting here this evening, I've been live-chatting on Facebook with my DN (dear niece) Laura, who accompanied me to Jewish Thighs on Broadway back in 2005.
-
I haven't stopped eating this weekend and I never seem to get full. Not a good thing if you ask me, but it hasnt' stopped me any
Must be the cooler weather, DR Cillaliz!
-
Is parking free at the hotel in Bethesda?
No. I checked on that before I made the decision. But, that's ok and it's deductible.
-
Must be the cooler weather, DR Cillaliz!
But I don't need to fatten up for the winter....trust me on this one
-
Can you imagine men everywhere wearing the outfit on the left? Oh dear what an image,
Photo is from NYT story on Fashion week

But I don't need to fatten up for the winter....trust me on this one
LOL - I hear ya! Neither do I!
-
I think I'm going to name her Dotty. It just seems to fit for some reason.
-
DR Jose, DG Dotty says thank you for her name and she will have me buy you a piece of Monkey Cake to celebrate next time I'm in NYC
-
Thank you DRs Ginny, TCB.
DRs TCB & George, how about some extra vibes he ends up in your part of the country?

Time for me to crash - 'night!

Some internet site this weekend had a series of photos called the Hunks of the Olympics. So, of course, I looked. Can someone please explain this outfit from the Netherlands?

Whoops, me too.
'night

Job vibes for Craig!!!!!!!!!

Can you imagine men everywhere wearing the outfit on the left? Oh dear what an image, ...
Formal wear for beach goers, an absolute must when dining at McDonalds.
(The pattern hides the ketchup stains better.)

It's very orange. And maybe not orange enough.
-
I'm off, too.

:o ;D That looks like a boy, not a man, wearing the outfit.
-
Good idea, that would you and Keith and Sherlock would come visiting!
[
YOU BET WE WOULD!!! :D
FINGERS CROSSED!!!!
-
Thank you DR's Laura & Cilla.
-
Back from a wonderfully wonderful dinner with Cason and Karen Murphy. We had a grand time and the food was, of course, yummilicious in the extreme. More later in the notes.
-
I love all Fellini films right up through 8 1/2, then I don't love them so much after that. I do love La Dolce Vita - especially the waitress (blonde gal) who Marcello meets at a seaside town and then sees at the very end of the film. It is her close-up that ends the film and it's one of my all-time favorite last shots of a film.
-
It was a good day, we Skyped with DS Craig & just now got off the phone with DS Bryan.
'night
-
Good Evening!
I'm back from another SETC dinner. Tonight's dinner was for the Auditions Staff, and since I'm the pianist for the auditions, well...
We ended up at Brixx Pizza (http://www.brixxpizza.com/). There were about 25 people there, so we just "voted" on a couple of pizzas and some bottles of wine, then passed the plates around. The pizzas are basically "personal sized" - 10" - so we ordered about 12 different pizzas, and we were all able to sample a slice or two from each variety. I think my favorite was the Roasted Pear, Gorgonzola and Walnut Pizza.
*Oh, and the desserts were surprisingly good too. They had a Chocolate Fudge Torte which actually had a layer of Chocolate Fudge in it!
-
Right now I think that Dotty is winning

Hmm... I thought he was playing Motel.

Nor me.

It doesn't need an explanation, it needs a magnifying glass.
-
OK.. Time for some TV and then some sleep...
Goodnight.
-
I did find out that the hotel I'm staying at has free wireless in the room. :) Apparently the hotel was totally refurbished last spring, so I'm hoping it will be nice. There are also supposedly lots of great little restaurants near the hotel.

I feel the same way about LA DOLCE VITA. It was an OK viewing experience but it's not a film I would enthusiastically revisit.
-
When do you go on your trip?
I leave Thursday and go to Omaha then fly out at 6:15 AM on Friday. Thought maybe it was time to figure things out,
-
I got to within two episodes to the end of the season, so I wont finish it until tomorrow.
-
One of those episodes was the last episode for Khandi Alexander who's been with the show from the beginning.
-
I have a busy day tomorrow so I suppose I better get to bed. Good night.
-
There are also four featurettes on the last disc of CSI: MIAMI. I will get through those tomorrow as well.
-
I did have a chance to watch TRUE BLOOD tonight. I won't say it's the most brilliant thing I've ever seen, but it was an intriguing pilot and has lots of room to expand some interesting characters.
-
I'm very interested in hearing DRs opinions on HBO's TRUE BLOOD, especially those who are not familiar with Charlaine Harris' delightful novels.
This is the first series that I have been excited about since the onset, and I thought that Ball and the HBO team did a great job with only a half hour, hence I can't wait for next week's episode. . .and the next one. . .and the next. . .
-
DR Matt H. - have you read any of the novels? (Which, like the HBO show, are in serial form).
-
No matter how bad your day gets or how down you feel, this will surely make you day brighter!

DR Matt H. - have you read any of the novels? (Which, like the HBO show, are in serial form).
No, I haven't read any of the novels, but I really liked a lot of the characters and enjoyed the mix of comedy and drama. (The opening scene was wonderful.)
And the men were EASY on the eyes.

A half hour? No, it was an hour. Maybe it only seemed like a half hour.
-
I guess I need to write for a bit and then head down to bed.
Good night!
-
I'm watching a very interesting motion picture on DVD.
-
MBarnum was right!
-
I have never seen a Fellini film that I liked.
-
A half hour? No, it was an hour. Maybe it only seemed like a half hour.
Time flies when you're having fun. . .
-
I have never seen a Fellini film that I liked.
I would think that you would like LA STRADA or even NIGHTS OF CABIRIA.
I would even think that you would like his "Toby Dammit" sequence in SPIRITS OF THE DEAD.
-
I have never seen a Fellini film that I liked.
I have never seen a Fellini film.
-
But I'm sure that doesn't surprise anyone.
-
I have never seen a Fellini film.
Gregory Peck didn't make any movies with Fellini.
Is there a connection?

Songs by Paul Francis Webster that won the Academy Award for Best Original Song

Nominated for the award
"Remember Me to Carolina" (1944)

"A World that Never Was" (1976)
Songs winning Grammy Awards for best song of the year
"The Shadow of Your Smile" (love theme from The Sandpiper, 1966)
der Brucer (stealing from wiki)
The only three songs from the above that never had a commercial release was the first and the last two. I finally heard the song Strange Are the Ways Of Love (Which BTW had no connection with the song with the same name from The Young Land that was nominated in 1959) The song played over the closing titles and last 90 seconds.
-
It had lots of competition:
Best Music, Original Song
Winner:
Born Free (1966) - John Barry (I) (music); Don Black (I) (lyrics)
- For the song "Born Free".
- John Barry was not present at the awards ceremony.
Other Nominees:
Alfie (1966) - Burt Bacharach (music); Hal David (II) (lyrics)
- For the song "Alfie"
American Dream, An (1966) - Johnny Mandel (music); Paul Francis Webster (lyrics)
- For the song "A Time for Love"
Georgy Girl (1966) - Tom Springfield (music); Jim Dale (I) (lyrics)
- For the song "Georgy Girl"
Hawaii (1966) - Elmer Bernstein (music); Mack David (lyrics)
- For the song "My Wishing Doll"
der Brucer
Born Free, Georgy Girl and Alfie I guess became standards.
Jane Monheit does a very nice version A Time for Love
But were there any other worthy songs from that year???
-
DR Michael S - I found a recording of "My Wishing Doll," which I did forward to DR tomovoz, now just let me find it again, and I'll make sure that you receive it.
DR TOM so kindly forwarded it to me. Who sings it??
-
Maybe it was just the wierd Fellin films that I saw. Satyricon made me want to vomit on the ground.
-
DR TOM so kindly forwarded it to me. Who sings it??
It's from an album by Charlie Byrd, the guitarist.

Maybe it was just the wierd Fellin films that I saw. Satyricon made me want to vomit on the ground.
SATYRICON is not typical Fellini. . .

"It's hard out Here For a Pimp" and "Lose Yourself". Two wonderful standards in the making.
DR FJL probably sings them in the shower.
I actually refuse to include these two songs in my Oscar song collection

Very Happy (and hopefully, not too late) Birthday Wishes for DR William E. Lurie!! ;D

It's from an album by Charlie Byrd, the guitarist.
I am glad it was recorded, but why did he chose it would be my question.
-
Born Free, Georgy Girl and Alfie I guess became standards.
Jane Monheit does a very nice version A Time for Love
But were there any other worthy songs from that year???
My question was answered earlier on. Thanks to all that chimed in on this.

Happy Birthday to DR Ginny's DS Rob!! ;D

The only three songs from the above that never had a commercial release was the first and the last two. I finally heard the song Strange Are the Ways Of Love (Which BTW had no connection with the song with the same name from The Young Land that was nominated in 1959) The song played over the closing titles and last 90 seconds.
Unlike the studios that would hire him for his set fee to write a song for their pictures, independent producers would occasionally come to Paul Francis Webster and ask if he had an original song "in his drawer" that they could buy for their film.
That was the case with both "Strange Are the Ways of Love" and "A World That Never Was". They were songs that he'd done on spec that were just laying around, waiting to be adopted.

And now, I must ketchup on all of yesterday's posts...I didn't log in once, yesterday. But I'm all caught up on today's. :)
-
Earlier today (after I came home from working concessions at the theater), I dusted off the TV in my bedroom, unplugged the power cord, disconnected all the wires from the back and very, very, very (that's three verys) carefully slid it down my two flights of (fortunately, carpetted) stairs. :)
-
The reason was that the daughter of my friend Margo bought my TV...or, I'm going to sell it to her.
-
Margo's daughter Lian (pronounced "LEE-in"...it was her original Chinese name when Margo adopted her) has a Nintendo wii but they all have to share one TV and swapping cables is a hassle.
-
Since Lian has her own room (and they don't have cable), Margo said that she could buy her own TV. At first, Margo was thinking of a small TV, because even though Lian has a job (she's only 12 years old), it's only two hours a week and she doesn't make much money.
-
I said that I have two 27-inch TVs and need to get rid of one. Would Lian want to buy that? She would! So we agreed on a price and Lian can pay me over two months.
-
And now, Lian will have a new (to her) TV (and it's in very good condition) and I'll be able to get rid of this TV without any trouble...other than it's freakin' heavy and I had to slide it down two flights of stairs without 1...breaking my back, 2...breaking the TV and 3...letting go of it and having it crash into a wall.
Fortunately, I got it downstairs in one piece. ;D
-
And since we're so close...
-
PAGE 11 DANCE!!
-
The two TVs are very similar. The one I'm getting rid of is an Apex and the one I'm keeping is a Panasonic. They each have one annoying attribute. :-\ The Apex seems like the picture is zoomed in a bit. The image is too big for the screen that shows, so the outer edges are lost. The best part of that is that when there's a crawl displayed at the bottom, you can't see it. I hope that this won't be a problem for Lian. We'll see. :-\
-
The problem with the Panasonic (which I forgot because I didn't check until AFTER I hauled the Apex downstairs) is that the picture can't get very bright. Even with the brightness turned all the way up to 30, it's still just a bit too dark. It's a great picture, but during really dark scenes, it's hard to see. At this point, I don't think that moving one TV back up two flights of stairs and another TV down two flights of stairs is worth the brighter picture for me. I just hope that Lian doesn't mind the slightly zoomed image.
