DD Sherlock loves the beach, however, his overprotective parents won't let him go swimming in the ocean, let alone ride a surf board.
-
We never did these initials on our car trips. If we had, I would have disqualified myself. It's not fair to the others. It's not my website, but for what my opinion is worth, if you post initials that we had done already, I would call that to your attention, and we should either sit it out and just let everyone else play, or just change the initials. There are still tons of good new ones that we've never done. Oh, and to JMK, Hi back.
-
Howard Metzenbaum - late Senator from Ohio
-
Good Afternoon!
I just got an email from my brother Mike informing me that he's coming up to New York City this weekend, and he's bringing my nephew, John, with him!!!! :) :) :) :) :)

Needless to say, I am soooooo happy and excited right now.

My brother would actually like to stay another day in NYC, but can't due to his work schedule. So, since I'm off next week, I'm proposing that John stay with me an extra day, and then I can take him back down to DC on the bus on Monday.
-
I shall be back later today, when everything is ... well installed, if you know what I mean!
-
Welcome back, DR JRand - we missed you!
-
Yay! Jrand is back! We missed you!

We interrupt this Word Game to bring you a clip of a certain performer hiding out in Wisconsin. Some of the cast were on morning television today. They got up at 6:30am to be in Milwaukee for The Morning Blend. They did a portion of Brotherhood of Man and we have evidence. The link below should take you to the site. There is an interview with the director who explains the show and then we get the number. You may get asked a security question (or maybe not, it depends on your computer) about installing an Active X control which will allow you to view the clip. Answer yes and the clip(s) will load. There is a 12 second intro by the hosts and then the 6 minute interview and performance. Those of you who know Anthony will certainly recognize him. He's the Brooklyn boy on the right (when you're looking at the computer) and he has a big white flower in his lapel. I don't know how long this clip will be up but it's there now for your viewing enjoyment.
P.S. some of you may get a repeat announcement. When I get home I'll send out another e-mail to other people on my lists who want to see the clip. I don't have their e-mail addresses here.

Interesting piece of trivia on Harpo Marx, his grand nephew, Gregg Marx used to be on Days of our Lives.
-
I can't believe we did these initials exactly one month ago - it makes no sense to me. I'll go check it out and see if we've missed anyone. So, in the spirit of keeping things fresh, let's reverse them now and do M.H.
I'll start with Michael G. Hawkins, who just starred in the reading of Druxy's show.
EDIT: Ignore the first paragraph - my brain went on vacation for a brief moment.

How stupid am I? I misread that post - we haven't done HM before. Still, let's do the reverse anyway.

I will have to take a peak at Ant at work. My dailup is being downright stinky at the moment.
I send many positive vibes his way!

Of course bk is free to do anything with his Initials Game he wants since it is trademarked ( :o ).
But I don't think switching initials in the middle of the day is a great idea. You're using up initials that would make interesting rounds for the future (there are not an infinite number of combinations). It stymies thinking on the original initials. For example, no one had mentioned actress Heather Matarazzo yet, and I'm sure there are others. But folks get sidetracked when new initials are suggested.
Just my two cents and probably worth less than that.
-
I spent a great portion of the afternoon watching the remaining two CSI: MIAMI episodes. This includes the ludicrous season cliffhanger shooting of Caine and the suggestion that Ryan Wolfe is somehow behind it or complicit in it.
-
There were four featurettes connected to this season's box set. Four of the show's recurring directors were interviewed to show how each rose to get to direct several episodes per season. That was actually kind of interesting showing them at work with their differing styles of directing.
-
There was a six minute quickie on how the makeup department works to make people look dead.
A lengthy and not especially interesting feature was one spotlighting some real female officers on the Miami-Dade Police force. It was almost like a recruiting video for women to join up.
-
The most surprising feature analyzed the journeys of the various main characters during season six. What shocked me, however, was that there was simply NO mention of Khandi Alexander's character and her departure from the show. Amazing that someone who had been on the show six years didn't even merit a single word of praise or a fond farewell. Was her leaving acrimonious?
-
I did have time to speed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing and nothing in the previews.
-
I'm not a fan of switching initials in the middle of the day, either.
-
I agree with Matt H totally about reversing initials in mid-stream. And I hold the patent. And I wouldn't advise it in the future. I think it cheapens the game.
But this set of initials are now being wasted, so I'll pitch in.

Tobias Kevin Slaughter (Toby)
was born on Saturday, September 6, at 4:28 p.m.

19 and 1/4 inches
Being 5 weeks early, he has small lungs, so he will have to stay in the hospital for a little while. Mom and Dad are doing well.

Henry Miller----B'way producer in the early 1900's.
There's a Broadway theatre named after him.
Which one?

The facade of the Henry Miller Theatre is all that is left of that once grand and glorious space. The facade was landmarked but not the interior and when the recent construction began on that half block of New York real estate it all came down but the front. They moved it a bit to the West and have built a new theatre to take the place of the old one. It will still be called the Henry Miller Theatre but it won't be the original Henry Miller Theatre which you knew for 24 years.

Congratulations to Jed and Ann!!!

DD Sherlock loves the beach, however, his overprotective parents won't let him go swimming in the ocean, let alone ride a surf board.

It may be quite a while before I get to see cyber grandbaby, Toby. It appears that the MRSA may have returned. This time in my eye.

Tomorrow my book group has its annual pot luck salad lunch gathering. Most times I manage to convince them to let me make a dessert, not this time. Off to make a bean, corn & pepper salad.

Looks like I will have time tonight to watch last night's ENTOURAGE and MAD MEN. I am recording THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES and THE CLOSER so I can start them later and speed through commercials and still finish at 11 to get back on-line.
-
DR Ben, that clip was wonderful and DP Ant comes off really really well!!! :D
It sounds like they brought along their whole pit band with them to the studio - did they?
-
Tomorrow I'll be back to regular DVD movies for awhile (unless the Blu-ray of GREY'S ANATOMY is somehow magically received). I'll begin with Criterion's THE EARRINGS OF MADAME DE.... and follow that up with the recent "classic" THE LOVE GURU.
That should span the gamut from classic to bomb pretty neatly.

In news for those of you strangely actually remembering my posts, they have finally today begun construction on the houses next door to us on the beautiful farm lot that was subdivided literally years ago. I talked with a construction guy (actually nice and quite civil for a change)--they're grading the lots today (I give them an F-, but I don't think that's what he meant), pouring the foundations tomorrow, and then we're in for about 6 weeks of a lot of noise. Oy.
-
DR Ben, that clip was wonderful and DP Ant comes off really really well!!! :D
It sounds like they brought along their whole pit band with them to the studio - did they?
No pit band. The theatre is very small. There is no room for an orchestra so Fireside uses a track. The orchestra was recorded in early August (30 piece if I recall correctly) in Milwaukee. The cast all went to the recording so they could hear the orchestra and see what was going on. Then the tape was sent to the theatre and they rehearsed with the track for two weeks. That's what they perform with also. It actually sounds good. You wouldn't know (alright some people might know) that there is no orchestra hidden away in a room off stage.
-
Herman Mudgett - the Devil in the White City from Erik Larson's book of the same title
Great book. Fascinating man. Maybe even a Sondheim musical.

Oh, we can do both sets of initials. It's a pain in the ass, working on the list, but it can be done.
But, while we're at it, I find it hy-larious that our own BK mentioned Mercy Humppe, while her titular co-star Hieranymous Merkin still hadn't made the HM list.

Oy.
I thought they had given up on them since it has been soooo long.
Vibes the houses are lovely & your new neighbors (if they can sell the homes) are very nice.

Thanks for the postings.
I gather they used the original broadway orchestrations as opposed to the revival with Broderick.
The Ant was fun to watch.

Man, I'm tired of the telephonic device and my eyes are bleary from e-mail sending.

I should note, here and now, that the MH list is entirely my compiling. Der B was not at all happy with the initials switch, and made his opinion very clear when he picked me up after work. He was not at all happy the last time this happened, either.
For today, I would say that we've got both lists going, so let's continue with both initial pairs.
However, for the future, let's stick to one pair, without switiching. Among other reasons: It's bad enough when I come home from work in a foul mood and acting like a bitch. It's way too much when der B is also in a foul mood and acting like a bitch, because of the switch. It confuses the dogs.
-
Malcolm Hulke wrote many Doctor Who scripts back in the days of Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee.
-
Prolific TV actor Howard Morton. Many, many sitcoms.
-
I knew there were more H.M.s left - too bad Rothman got bored - I'll have to wipe up the room with him:
Heather Menzies - actress - The Sound Of Music and many others.
-
I ain't down yet.
-
If only the bloody Internet was not so damnably slow.
-
I will admit to being distracted right now.
A new box of books has arrived from Jessica's Biscuit.
The Cuisines of Hidden Mexico, by Bruce Kraig & Ducley Nieto
At the Japanese Table, by Lesley Downer
Strictly Shrimp, by A. D. Livingston.
and La Bonne Cuisine de Madame E. Saint-Ange, the book Julia Child initially learned from.
Plus Anne Mendelson's Stand Facing the Stove, about the women who wrote The Joy of Cooking.
The Tenth Muse, by Judith Jones, is on backorder.
I am, for the moment, happy.
-
And just to be clear, the only reason I have ever suggested reversing the initials is because Rothman told me that's how he's always played it. How the senile forget.
-
Well, no one can say we didn't get to page twelve. I think this calls for an H.M.
-
Helen Martin - black actress with many B'way credits including the neat feat of appearing in the original Purlie Victorious and then the musical version, Purlie.
-
Marilu Henner, actress and health advocate.
-
Mary Cleere Haran...didn't you produce one of her CDs, BK?

Whoops, I forgot to sign out of HHW. Thanks for the good wishes, guys. This will probably sound stupid, but I really didn't announce my latest crisis looking for sympathy. I really just didn't have anyone else that I could tell. Thanks for being there.

H, everyone! I'm taking a break from reading the textbook for my God, Meaning, and Morality class...it's unbelievable that anyone let this get published- the grammar is practically nonexistent and it's written in the style of Faulkner...thought after thought, after thought after thought, with no apparent connection.
BAH.
I'm afraid all of my HM names have been posted...
-
Good Evening!
I am home. And I am hungry too. So, I shall have to catch up the posts later and names and initials later. Or not. ;)

Yes, MS, they are using the original 1962 charts (or whatever the original charts are), not the MB revival charts.

That's debatable. ;)
But he is eye candy.

We're going to have some big changes in the game starting next week - macchus and I have been analyzing it and what made it such fun when we did it, and we've come up with a way that I think will make everyone have a lot more participation and much more of a good time. Basically, I will post the initials at midnight, but neither macchus or I will post any names until I'm up at say eight in the morning my time. And we'll go back to the way I originally set it up - one name per post and then that person cannot post again until someone else does a name - that way it's like a tennis match and it's served back and forth between all dear readers. It just hasn't been that much fun in recent weeks and it sure was when we started out - so, the new, improved version next Monday!
-
Sounds like a plan, BK. :)
-
And since we're not playing by next week's rules, I can post another name without waiting for someone else to post a name: Maurice Hines, dancer/singer/actor/ and brother to dancer/singer/actor, the late, great Gregory Hines...and probably no relation to Mimi.
;)
-
And welcome home to DR JoseSPiano! :D

I don't know if the news has been announced here yet, since I just walked in the door, but
Tobias Kevin Slaughter (Toby)
was born on Saturday, September 6, at 4:28 p.m.
5 pounds, 10 ounces
19 and 1/4 inches
Being 5 weeks early, he has small lungs, so he will have to stay in the hospital for a little while. Mom and Dad are doing well.
Super congrats to everyone involved! :D ;D Why it just seems like just yesterday........
-
It may be quite a while before I get to see cyber grandbaby, Toby. It appears that the MRSA may have returned. This time in my eye.
I also send eye vibes to dear TCB!

Hopefully this plan will work, but I hope you and macchus are also remembering that part of your original game was the environment you were playing in. Basically, you were together in a car, working strictly from memory, and in real time. Here on the Internet we're instead working in a virtual world, where the players can drop out at any moment, and then back in, and lordy knows where they've been inbetween.
It's a different challenge. It isn't "Ouch, he's thrown it right back at me and now I've got to come up with another name, dammit, I didn't have a chance to think before he gave me his next name and I could kill him for being so fast!" The change in the environment, and the number of players, changes the tone of the game. That's part of why der B and I added the "achievement" part of our spreadsheet, that annotation of why the person should be known - by spreading the game out to a large number of players, it becomes less of a contest and more a sharing of knowledge, less "can you top this" and more "I didn't know that and wait, that gave me an idea, here's another name."
One more thing: the "don't post another name until someone else adds another name in between your first and next names" doesn't take into account those times when no one else is around. There's been plenty of times in the wee hours (say, two in the morning, your time) when I'm here, waking up, and the jernt is empty. And I don't think I'm the only one this happens to. At times like that, to go back to your tennis analogy, the only thing to do is hit that tennis ball against the wall and play with yourself.
Hmmm, that sounded like a euphemism. But you know what I mean.
My hunch is that the game will evolve in the way it will evolve, whichever way that ends up being. We will simply have to love and nurture it, occasionally with tough love but more often freely. Giving a stricter set of rules may work, for a while, but eventually it will break loose and become something unexpected.
And that might, on occasion, be a good thing.
-
I thought of two more MHs, but I need to leave work and go shopping in Tacoma, so here's one: Melissa Joan Hart, actress.
-
I'm pleased to say that DD Bear is doing very well. He will get his stitches out tomorrow night.
As for Ike, well, we're still keeping on eye on that himacane. He's down to a CAT 1 (YAY)--at least for now. Most of the tv stations keep saying we should be in the clear. I hope they are right.

Time to get dinner on the table.
Leftover chicken breasts, being tossed in a salad, with pasta and pesto on the side.

The other MH that I remembered is a wonderful singer that I actually knew! Margot Hanson (http://www.myspace.com/margothanson), who is the wife of an incredible bass player, Chuck Israels. When I went to Western Washington University, Chuck became the jazz instructor...choir, band, etc., and I joined in the jazz choir. His wife also became a voice instructor there and we got to know her and she sang with us quite a bit. I also got to know their daughter, Jessica. She's all grown up now, too! :D
-
And now, off to Tacoma.
Until later!

Link, Vixmom?

DR Danise, great news on both counts.

I cannot find a link, I will have to scan and post
The paper did a "review" of our church. The photographer was taking pictures during coffee hour after the service and they happened to print the one where the Vixter was prominently featured

A lifetime full of vibes and xylophones to young Toby.

Not yet. She has been very busy with School, soccer and church with very limited time for herself. She hasn't watched TV show, used the computer or chatted on the phone since we retuned from Canada... all the non-school reading she has done so far has been your book, and she has been sqiueezing that in while I drive her places!
-
I missed Danise again, dang! Glad to hear that hurricanes have been avoidingher and that Bear is on the mend

VIBES for dear TCB

This is for anyone that has beloved pets or knows anyone that does...
To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - nose height.
Dear Dogs and Cats,
The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.
I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.
For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years -- canine or feline attendance is not required.
The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!
To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:
To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:
1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it 'fur'niture.)
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.
Remember: In many ways, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:
1. Eat less
2. Don't ask for money all the time
3. Are easier to train
4. Normally come when called
5. Never ask to drive the car
6.Don't hang out with drug-using friends
7. Don't smoke or drink
8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions
9. Don't want to wear your clothes
10. Don't need a 'gazillion' dollars for college.
And finally,
11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

LOL, Druxy. And so true.

This was sent to me by a friend and I wanted to share:
WHY WOMEN SHOULD VOTE
This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago.
Remember, it was not until 1920
that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.
The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed
nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking
for the vote.
And by the end of the night, they were barely alive.
Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing
went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of
'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'
(Lucy Burns)
They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above
her head and left her hanging fo! r the ni ght, bleeding and gasping
for air.
(Dora Lewis)
They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her
head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate,
Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart atta ck.
Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging,
beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.
Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917,
when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his
guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because
they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right
to vote.
For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their
food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.
(Alice Paul)
When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair,
forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited.
She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/suffrage/nwp/prisoners.pdf
So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because-
-why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work?
Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?
Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO's new
movie 'Iron Jawed Angels.' It is a graphic depiction of the battle
these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling
booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.
All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the
actual act of voting had become less personal for me, m ore rote.
Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege.
Sometimes it was inconvenient.
My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women's history,
saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk
about it, she looked angry. She was--with herself. 'One thought
kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,' she said.
'What would those women think of the way I use, or don't use,
my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just
younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.' The
right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her 'all over again.'
HBO released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history,
social studies and government teachers would include the movie in
their curriculum I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere
else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing,
but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think
a little shock therapy is in order.
It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade
a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized.
And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave.
That didn't make her crazy.
The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'
Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know.
We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so
hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic,
republican or independent party - remember to vote.
History is being made.

Good Evening!
I'm sleepy. Just sayin'.

Hey Jose! Good news about you r upcoming Uncle JoJO days! We expect pcitures!
Thanks!
-And I really don't think I've stopped smiling since I got the news. And, now, it appears there's a chance that my niece, Alyssa, may be coming up too. It will all depend on how broke my brother wants to be after this weekend. ;)
-
There's a Blu-Ray of Season 4 of Grey's Anatomy that's been sitting in the screener pool for at least two weeks--maybe it's yours. ;)
Funny. They've just started arriving to folks I know who review. I suspect mine will arrive tomorrow or the day after. The review, of course, will not make street date.
-
I had a full evening of completely fun viewing. I began by watching THE BANK JOB on Blu-ray disc. Like all of the Lionsgate Blu-rays that I've watched/reviewed, the picture was exemplary. The sound was DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 though I didn't think they got enough out of the sound design to warrant all those channels.
And Jason Statham is just SUCH a hunk.
The movie was a very enjoyable caper film.
-
Next, I watched MAD MEN on HD On Demand, the ONLY way to see this show. One of the best episodes of the season with Bryan Batt getting some major screen time for a change.
And I love the secretary war that's starting to brew. That should be interesting.
-
Next, I watched last night's ENTOURAGE. I didn't love it. I don't find the Vince Chase character very interesting or appealing any more: a swelled head with not much reason to be swelled. I'll give it one or two more episodes before pulling the plug if it doesn't improve.
-
Same thing with THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. Last year, it began as an endless chase series - the good guys always running from Terminators who were trying to destroy them. A little later in the run, it got more interesting with some real character development. Tonight's season premiere was just like the beginning of last year, and I have a very short fuse. There will be CHUCK to watch in a few weeks so if this doesn't get better, I will quickly drop it.
-
I ended the evening watching tonight's THE CLOSER.
I just LOVED Brenda's comeback to Pope in his office after he had given her that tongue-lashing earlier in the episode.
The morgue scene was hysterical!
I had the assassin's identity figured out very quickly.

O had it figured out too. I thought it was a great episode and has been a great season so far.

It's going to be 38 degrees here tonight.

Oh... I really liked last night's premiere of episode of "True Blood" on HBO.
*I wonder if someone will try to musicalize this one. :P
-
OK... I made it the weather reports on the news, and now....
Goodnight.

I brought work home but just can't get myself to do it. Guess I'll just have to get to the office earier in the morning. LOTS to do before I leave town

DR Jennifer:

This week's ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY is also devoted to new and returning shows.
You mentioning wanting this information some weeks ago.

And now, I think I'll head down a bit earlier than usual to get ready for bed.
Good night!

I just finished watching the new transfer of HOW THE WEST WAS WON on dvd. May I say it was a revelation; a revelation like the first time I saw the TODD-AO OKLAHOMA! (way back in the days of laserdisc).
I've always enjoyed HTWW, and was fortunate enough to have seen it on the huge curved screen for Cine-a-Rama, which totally encompassed its audience through sight and sound.
I watched the Cine-a-Rama documentary last night, and will go on record as saying that I don't particularly care for "Smilebox" - even on a large television, for I feel that it doesn't sweep you into the film, but actually distances you from the film experience (at least that was the feeling I got seeing the "Smileboxed" clips in the doc).
As for the new enhanced transfer, I'll say that it's gorgeous. It must have taken a lot of man-hours to sweep those joint-lines away, and they are gone for the most part. The transfer, unlike other recent Warner titles, does not verge into the brown area, but pretty much presents the film, in a very wide aspect ratio, the way it would be seen on a non-Cine-a-Rama screen. After its initial roadshow engagements, I did see HHTW on those types of screens as well.
This is a great dvd set! I think that DR Druxy has already commented on it positively, too.
I haven't listened to the commentary, but I wonder (since there are no deleted scenes) if the commentators dwell any at all on the subplot involving Hope Lange, all of whose scenes were cut from the finised film.
-
Wow, really quiet right now... no posts for over an hour..

Welcome to the land of the WUSSBURGER.

Welcome to the land of the WUSSBURGER.
I'd like mine on a bun with lettuce, tomato, and mayo, please.

Glad to see that DR FJL has arrived home safe & sound! :D
