Well, you've read the notes, the notes were egg-like (goo goo goo joob), and now it is time for you to post until the poached cows come home.

Good morning, all! Well, I was wrong about my eyes; the last month's situation has crewed them up and I'm very happy I'm seeign the ophthalmologist on Monday afternoon. Using my bifocals, I'm currently seeing better far distance through my reading lens and everything in my long distance lenses is a blur. I'm not happy at all about this, especially now that my blood sugar levels are running between 85 and 130, depending on the time of day, and I was told that they would revert to normal once the blood levels were in better shape. I'll be curious to hear what the ophthalmologist tels me.
In 15 minutes I will walk down to Music Theatre International on 54th Street and pick up the ready materials for THE MOST HAPPY FELLA; hopefully, today I'll get the band parts from their Long Island warehouse as well.
Once I get these materials back to the apartment, I'm back to the TOYLAND libretto.

After I finished reading the newspaper this morning, I sat down and watched LA RONDE. Since it's just a bit over 90 minutes, I knew I could get it watched and use the afternoon for viewing the bonus features. There is also a commentary by Susan White that I'll sample.
For all its lightness, I found LA RONDE incredibly sad underneath, almost sour over the fleetingness of love. Marvelous cast. I especially loved the segments that featured Daniel Gélin as young Alfred and Danielle Darrieux as the married lady.

I'm back from my walk down to 54th Street. On the way I ran into Seth Rudetsky, who's always fun to talk to, at 72nd Street and Broadway. On my way back from MTI with the score, I had the weirdest bus ride. I sat down nest to this older man wearing a yamulke who gave me the third degree: where was I from? was I Jewish? where was the temple in my hometown? was it a large congregation? He was weird but friendly until he was getting off the bus, when he became loudly vocal about violence in Israel. He said he owned an office supplies shop in Brooklyn and he gave me a pen.

DR elmore - It will still take a bit more time for your eyes to "even out". In the meantime, just make sure you have adequate lighting in your work areas, and you should probably give your eyes a break every now and then, and not use your glasses. Your eyes could still be "shrinking" back to what they were after having all that extra fluid in them for a while.
I'm also wondering if it's possible that your current prescription was affected by your un-diagnosed diabetes over the past couple of years. You could just need a new prescription. Maybe your uncorrected vision is better than it was. -Or something like that. ;)

Oh, I suppose I'm up. Very overcast outside. Yesterday, it did not burn off until about ten-thirty, when I was halfway through my jog.

Apparently, Meltz and Ernest have competition - there's a new off-B'way show called What's That Smell? The Songs of Jacob Sterling. Everyone is acting like this is a brilliant new concept, like no one has ever come up with fictional bad songwriters. Not only Meltz and Ernest, but their precursors in the One From Column A days, Gluckman and Fitz, and long before that, off-B'way's Mooney Shapiro Songbook, and a couple of others I can't remember. I wonder if this show would exist had we made the Meltz and Ernest film way back when, if the producers hadn't crapped out because they were so gung-ho about putting all their money into a great new musical (it's also why they crapped out on Nudie Musical) - the great new musical? Bklyn.

LOL, thanks. We aren't graded, but the mock hearings we do are critiqued and recorded so we can take them home and watch them.

I was looking for Ohio....but all I saw were clouds and listened to the lady next to me snore. I really hope her kids got to the airport to meet her. Hmm... I've been reading some of the press releases - I love David Pittu! - and reading some of the reactions so far, and I think you're reading too much into everything.
I don't think the producers and creative team are claiming that their premise is at all original. It's a riff on a riff.
*And as for BKLYN, well... Just be glad you don't have to play and listen to some of those songs during auditions. ;)

I didn't read it on a board - I was told about it. And you are right, the producers and creative team aren't claiming it's original - they're not claiming anything :) It's the people talking about it who are acting as if it's a brilliant new idea. My point, of course, is that everything old is new again. I wasn't the first, Mooney Shapiro wasn't the first - in fact, I'm really trying to remember what was the first - I have this memory of something in the early 60s that maybe Dom de Luise and Barbara Streisand were in? Am I crazy? Wait - Harry Stoones? Does that ring any bells?

When I checked in I got a huge list of restaurants in Bethesda. I've decided with all the work I have to do that I"m not going to try to go to ACE or do too much sight seeing, BUT, I should have time to go to some of the restaurants in the area. I like to eat seafood when I'm near a coast. I'm thinking about The Bethesda Crab House. Any suggestions from anyone. I do have a car, so it doesn't have to be walking distance from the hotel. I would like to stay in the area though.

Library Tip for the Day:
When you call Telephone Reference for information, please turn down the volume on your radio/TV/baby. If I wanted to listen to Rush Limbaugh, I'd stay home and do so.

I've noticed that people who listen to Rush Limbaugh usually do it with the volume turned way up. What's with that?

Too bad you can't take the trip to the memorial when you aren't going anywhere else.

Ok, break is about over...I'm getting close to getting this silly thing done. Think I'll check on the hours of the business center. If I can get to a printer early in the morning, I can finish this up tonight.
LOL, I really love the people who work at this hotel. As long as I have my key I can work in the business center any time I want to...even the middle of the night if I feel so inclined. SO, that gives me some breathing room. I'll have it ready before class in the morning, no sweat.
-
I don't think the volume needs to be turned up for Limbough, he speaks very loudly to begin with.
-
Too bad you can't take the trip to the memorial when you aren't going anywhere else.
Oh, I'll be back here again sometime. If I don't get there, I don't get there. This is really a working trip that I'm trying to squeeze in some play time. Unfortunately work interferred with me being totally prepared before I got here so I need to work while I'm here or I won't get that much out of it.

RE: THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM.
I am definitely not holding my breath for Warners to do ANYTHING with it. The film was never a big hit to begin with and really hasn't developed any kind of real cult following in the decades since. I find real entertainment value in it, but I think I'm in the minority.
The last time some of the home video people did a Warner chat and were asked about it, they claimed flat out that the movie would require too much costly restoration to make it a viable proposition. That was a couple of eyars ago, but I doubt much has changed since then. The print TCM shows is as lackluster and flat as the laserdisc was.
-
And the clouds certainly cleared off here. It got hot quickly. Not cool outside at all.
-
I began my afternoon watching the bonus features on LA RONDE. Pretty good. I especially enjoyed a correspondence fro Laurence Olivier to the son of the original playwright asking for permission to perform the play at the National Theater and getting a firm no from him. Sometimes all the Oscars and titles and world recognition can't get you what you want.
-
Poached eggs:
Combine 1 1/2 inches water (about 2 quarts) and 1 tsp. vinegar in a wide 3-quart heavy saucepan (preferably about 9 inches wide) and bring to a simmer.
Break 1 egg into a small bowl or cup and slide egg into water. Repeat with each remaining egg, spacing them evenly in saucepan, and poach at a bare simmer until whites are firm and yolks are still runny, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer eggs as cooked to paper towels using a slotted spoon.
-
The commentary was very similar to what White did on THE EARRINGS OF MADAME DE... Good, full of information and analysis but a little too much description of what's on the screen.
-
Oh, I forgot that I did watch another episode of THE OFFICE while I cooked and ate lunch. This was the one with the launch party for the new website with Dwight's desperate plan to sell more paper than the computer site can sell. Also featured the kidnapping of the pizza delivery boy who wouldn't give Michael the discount on his pizzas. Very funny stuff.
-
Actually, I just did a little research and found out that Meltz and Ernest wrote a song about a poached egg:
Beer comes with kegs
Feet come with legs
But I come for one thing
And that's poached eggs
On toast or a muffin
I am not bluffin'
An egg that is poached
Cannot be reproached
When in the dregs
All of me begs
For that dish of dishes
Lovely poached eggs
You can make with the jokes
But I'll take poached yolks
Like a hit movie, poached eggs have legs
So, you keep your scrambled
Sorry if I've rambled
Just give me some now - poached eggs!
-
I did have time to get into the GREY'S ANATOMY Blu-ray set and watch 1 1/2 episodes. Yes, the shows look wonderful in high def, but it's not the major upgrade in image that LOST on Blu-ray was from the regular DVD issues. Of course, with all those Hawaiian locations on LOST, of course it looks awesome in HD.
-
That song was touching, BK. No one writes a song like Meltz and Earnest.

I really liked Brothers Grimm and I saw it at least five times at the Warner Cinerama in Hollywood. Frankly, I don't understand why West is so much more well thought of. Grimm was very entertaining in Cinerama - big, fun, splashy, and terrific music. I know it's not a great film, but I don't happen to think West is a great film either. This is history, and Warners should step up to the plate and restore it. It's not like they're hurting for money. They could restore it, make a new Cinerama print that could bring in revenue, and do a Blu-Ray and SD-DVD that I'm sure would sell just as well as West.

I felt that Meltz and Ernest really went a little deeper than they usually do - that song is surprisingly wistful and melancholy and yet happy and gay.

I'd certainly buy it, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to be satisfied with the pale shell of the film I recorded off TCM.

We had homemade biscuits with eggs and bacon for lunch.
I don't think they were poached, we bought them in the supermarket.

Good thing, FJL, or the game warden might come to your house.

Right on! (I used a 10 in pot with 2" water & 2 tsp vinegar). Since I am putting the eggs in a bowl with heavily buttered toast pieces (2 pieces whole wheat, 1 piece rye, 3 eggs) I skip the drain on paper towel step - I just give the spoon a good jiggle to get rid of most of the water).
So easy, even a record producer could do it!

The Weather folks warned that of "certain death" for those remaining on Galveston Island (the sea walls are 17', the expected surge is about 25' with 6-10' waves on top of that).
The Governor has warned those staying that they will NOT be provided with rescue services.
FEMA has asked those remaining to please ink their SSN on their arm so the body can be identified.

There's a chronologic problem here, DR Matt H: the play was written by Schnitzler in 1897 and the playwright died in 1931, so Sir Laurence must have had a problem with the son about the translation. I can't imagine the son could stop a public domain play from being newly translated?

Jack Jones Still Swings; Elaine's Gang
Yes, that was the great '60s and '70s crooner Jack Jones in Elaine’s Thursday night, with his fiancée, a friend, and Bobby Zarem. He’s at the Algonquin Friday and Saturday night and all next week. Watch him on You Tube with Cleo Laine here.
Jack and Cleo, just like Vicki Carr and so many great singers, were from a generation of great vocalists who lived off Las Vegas, touring and variety shows. Michael Buble and Josh Groban are the Jack Joneses of today. If you’re in New York, don’t miss him. Jones turned 70 last January. He’s still partying like it’s 1979. ...

LOL--Meg's new face has been the subject of much horror between DS Betsy and myself.

The Channel 2 movie reviewer, from her comments on THE WOMEN, has most likely never seen the original film. Sad.

bk - They also sell those egg poachers at K-Mart, Target, Macy's, Williams-Sonoma, Sur La Table... There are even auto-electronic ones - Just add water!
However, I've always thought of those "egg poachers" more as "egg double-boilers/steamers". You can basically get the same "effect" by using oven-proof custard cups in a pan of water.
*And another tip for egg poaching - If you're doing one at a time, give the water a good stir to form a "vortex", then drop the egg in the "eye".
**My favorite poaching liquid for eggs: red wine. :)

'The Women' overworked
...
While the original film, written by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin from a play by Clare Boothe Luce, saw itself as a catty entertainment about New York society women coping with the infidelity of the husband of one of their friends, English has something grander and more complex in mind.
Graced with a big-name cast, including Meg Ryan as wife Mary, Annette Bening, Debra Messing and Jada Pinkett Smith as her best friends, and Eva Mendes as the home wrecker, this version sees itself as both a farce and a manifesto, a glorification of female friendship and a celebration of women's need for self-realization.
And when it comes to issues, "The Women" plays like a year's worth of stories from a glossy magazine.
In no particular order, the film deals with childbirth, face-lifts, sexual techniques, career women who neglect their children, teenage girls with self-image problems, men who don't believe in women, men who have trouble with successful women (not the same thing), the betrayal of female friendships, the perils of careers in a man's world and, quite possibly, more.
All that would be a handful to pull off for the most experienced filmmaker, but English has never directed before, and it shows. The visual choices she makes in "The Women" are invariably static, and except for whatever energy the performers can manage, the storytelling has a dispiriting flatness to it.
"The Women's" story starts roughly the same way the 1939 film does, with the discovery that Mary's never-seen husband, Steven, is having an affair with Crystal Allen (an intentionally provocative Mendes), the woman behind the perfume counter -- "the spritzer girl" to be exact -- at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Mary's best friends, including magazine editor Sylvie Fowler (Bening), gay writer Alex Fisher (Pinkett Smith) and supermom Edie Cohen (Messing), first try to decide whether to tell Mary and then what to advise her after she finds out the truth.
After this initial setup, however, "The Women" becomes unfocused as it stumbles over all the points it wants to make. Given English's writing skills, the dialogue doesn't help as much as it should, tending too much toward one-liners that aim for raunchy whenever possible.

He was seventy-two when we began issuing his stuff on Bay Cities, and we met and become very friendly. Well, I'm happy to report he's still with us and apparently going strong - at 91 years of age!

Greetings, gang.
I don't think I've posted today.
Work is work is work is work. For the first time since my meltdown in 1995 I don't like my job. In fact there are days when I hate my job. I've always felt good about the fact that I work at a place that provides a good and needed service for little or no fee and that I'm doing something worthwhile. The way things are working out right now I don't see the inner workings of the organization with such a bright, shiny face. I'm not leaving but I'm strenuously hoping things will get better. We are not doing overtime for the first time in 10 years and the higher ups think that will make us less stressed and happier. They live on a different planet and only come down to visit occasionally. Ugh!!!
-
On another disappointing note (with a somewhat happy ending), I decided to take my old hard drive back into TekServe, a computer store that does data recovery. I wanted to try and get back the six BBC sound files that I lost when when the computer died in January. I took it in after the computer died but we decided not to spend the money at that time. I've been working on Volume 4 of the CD and (maybe because Anthony's not here) I thought, what the hell, these are important to me and if I get them it will be worth it to me. I took the hard drive in on Sunday. They have a 75-80 percent success rate in retrieving data. Well, I got a phone call today and I'm in the 20-25 percent rate. They couldn't get anything off the drive. The sound clips are lost to the ether of past Internet broadcasts. The somewhat happy ending I alluded to is that I got a full refund of my deposit. They have a money back guarantee and if they can't recover anything you don't pay. So even though they worked from Sunday through today I didn't have to pay anything! Also, I do have the raw sound clips which I sent to Wales in the first place. When I put the CD together I will just include those clips and explain in the notes what happened.

Goldilocks:
"This VHS tape is too stale"...
"This VHS tape is too fresh"...
"This VHS tape is juuuuust riiiiiight!" ;)
Someone must be watching CENTURIANS (sic) OF ROME. ;D
-
I've also been trying to record Anthony's How to Succeed segment in a different format from Real Player 11. That program has a plug-in which will record video segments from the Internet. The only problem is, if it's not a Flash based video it will only play in Real Player Version 11. If you don't have that program you can't watch the video. All the computers that I use have RP 11 (not Ron Pulliam 11) so we can watch it here or play it for friends that didn't get to see it but it's not universally playable (is that a word?). I've tried the other video capture programs, like Vixy and KeepVid and they don't work. I've tried converting the video to a different format I that's not successful either. I've also tried the plug-in for Firefox 3 but that doesn't work either. If we don't get it in a different format it's not the end of the world but it would be nice to be able to record it in some other format (like mpeg or even QuickTime).

I will not eat poached eggs on a boat. I will not eat poached eggs with a goat. I will not eat poached eggs in a hat; I will not eat poached eggs with a cat.

And now, to end on a happier note, tomorrow evening I will be seeing an old college friend. He turned 50 in August but he's celebrating tomorrow. He lives in New York and we keep in touch but two old college friends who I rarely see will also be there. It will be quite nice to put the week behind me with good friends and cake and laughter :D

I hoping FJL's method of shouting 3 times makes our wishes come true.

I hope this will work, but I'm sending vibes to TCB as well.

I wish I felt like really doing this school. It isn't really what I thought it would be. Tonight they said it wasn't the content that mattered it was learning to be comfortable speaking in the courtroom. I'm very comfortable in the courtroom. I want to know what to say.
Tonight we described blocks. It was an interesting exercise, but... I'm exhausted.
-
I'm afraid the past few months is catching up with me. I'd really just like to go to bed and sleep in tomorrow.
-
I use an egg poacher.

Even a man who is pure at heart
And says his prayers at night
May become a wolf
When the wolfbane blooms
And the Autumn moon is bright

I wish my eye would get better!

You can smell us!
Or use your sense of touch. Handy excuse for "accidentally" groping people.

Tomorrow is my niece's 3rd birthday party.
I decided to make a recipe i've been dying to try (she even helped me since she likes baking).
When i got home tonight i cut it up and tried a piece. It is so good!
It's for Starbuck's Cranberry Bliss bars:

The funniest thing is that my niece loves playing with my nail polishes. She's been begging my sister for months to let her polish her nails.
Well my sister told her she could polish them for her birthday.
Tonight was the night we did it. And there were a bunch of people over at my sister's and i hear my niece tell someone, "yeah pedicures are when you put nail polish on your toes". So cute!

There's a chronologic problem here, DR Matt H: the play was written by Schnitzler in 1897 and the playwright died in 1931, so Sir Laurence must have had a problem with the son about the translation. I can't imagine the son could stop a public domain play from being newly translated?
This is all explained in the bonus features. The only place where the play was in the public domain was in the US. In all places in Europe except France at the time - 1964 -, the playwright's estate held the copyright and had to give permission which was always denied.

I spent most of the evening with GREY'S ANATOMY. My goodness, Shonda Rhimes had a lot of messes to get out of as Season 4 began. It took over half the season to clear things up from the tangled, irritating plots she and the writers had devised.
The hospital cases have always been interesting, riveting in many cases. It's just the interpersonal relationships between the doctors that got so garbled.
-
Some good guest star turns. Loved Seth Green's exploding neck and Gale Harold's swastika on his stomach surgery.
-
I've watched 7 of the 17 episodes thus far. There were also two audio commentaries I listened to. Neither was very interesting, and the one with the actress playing Rose was really poor. Almost no talking.
-
I did watch tonight's PSYCH. Good show with Shawn cuter than ever. Dule Hill had about the least to do that he's ever had.
Gary Cole and Alan Ruck were good guest stars.

I am really starting to get tired, so I'm heading downstairs to bed.
Good night!

Eye yi yi!
-
Warm tonight with rain predicted again for tomorrow. I have to work anyway!
-
Don't buy Roxio.....find something else.
-
I think I will buy the Rodan/War of the Gargantuas DVD.....
-
Such talk around here. I certainly know what my ancestor Lord Stanley thought about POACHERS!
-
I think I will watch TCM until I fall asleep.
-
Here is another NEW FACEBOOK DESIGN hater here.....it's NOT broken. Don't fix it.
-
And that's enough of me for now.

I wish DR TCB's eye would get better.

My brother and his son made it into Penn Station safe and sound, and only a few minutes late. John enjoyed his first subway ride, although, I think he was more fascinated by the rats running across the tracks than anything else. ;)
We're hoping to head out for the day around 9:00, so...
Goodnight.

I use an egg poacher.
I used an egg poacher once - he wasn't too happy about being used. I'll say no more.

This evening I watch the Road Warrior which is only the title of the movie on the cover of the Blu Ray release. The use the films original title Mad Max 2 in the credits. So why couldn't they use Mad Max 2 on the cover are people that unenlightened?
-
As much as I find it a chore to watch Mel Gibson these days; when he was young and unknown he was so much better. (He was 23 when he did Mad Max 2)
-
Does any watch HOUSE MD? I have been catching it in reruns on USA. I find it addictive. I don't think there has ever been a character quite like Dr. House on TV before.
-
Finished viewing for the evening. I ended up watching the VERY long Cimarron.
-
I'm the only one in the jernt?
-
Well, me and eight GUESTS, and now DR Megan, who doesn't really post very much.
-
I will not change anything including the notes until we reach three hundred postings.
-
People come, people go, like Grand Hotel. I'll just sit here and relax until we hit 300 postings.
-
What a bunch of WUSSBURGERS. Gone are the days when Jrand, Pogue, and countless others would be on and we had fun and things were just too too.
-
And then there were none.
-
This is actually quite nauseating, that I'm the only one posting in over two hours.
-
I should just lock this and not do the new one until morning, but I won't because I'm a very nice person who doesn't hold a grudge against the WUSSBURGERS.
-
Well, what can you do?
-
Here is post three hundred, no thanks to the WUSSBURGERS.
