Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little meat and a few potatoes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they, of course, are the meat and they're none too happy about it.

I haven't seen much theatre lately but this morning I went on a binge and bought some TDF tickets.
-
I'm seeing A Man for All Seasons with the masterful Frank Langella tomorrow evening.
-
Thursday I'm seeing the new adaptation of To Be or Not to Be (it's like the recent production of 39 Steps ) with the wonderful Jan Maxwell and David Rasche.
-
On Tuesday the 23rd I'm seeing 13, the new musical about teenagers.
-
On Wednesday the 24th I'm seeing A Tale of Two Cities.
If I recall correctly Dear Elmore is seeing it in the afternoon but I'm seeing it in the evening.
-
And on Thursday the 25th I'm seein Title of Show. I saw it at the Vineyard and loved it and I'm excited to see it now with the changes.
-
I may also go to the Half-Price booth on Saturday and get a ticket to Equus.
-
I also just have to bite the bullet and go to the Imperial and get a ticket for Billy Elliot. I want to see it before 2009 and I will sit in the last row of the balcony.
-
All My Sons isn't selling well (or as well as they had hoped considering that KH is making her Broadway debut) but it's still not on TDF so I may try to get a half-price ticket for that as well.
-
I may also try for a rear balcony ticket for Pal Joey which starts performances in November.
The Seagull was on TDF but none of the dates worked for me.
I have no desire to see either David Mamet curse fest, Speed the Plow or American Buffalo. I'm one of the minority that doesn't find him brilliant and sitting through two plus hours of his would be torture for me.
I have to get a ticket for Shrek as well and perhaps I'll get two tickets for White Christmas and surprise Anthony when he gets back from Wisconsin (shhh, don't tell him).
-
Ben - looking forward to all your theatre reportage! :)

Good morning, all! Yes, DR Ben, next Wednesday afternoon I see A TALE OF TWO CITIES; you have a good memory. Today at noon I have my secnd visit with Laurie, my nutritionist, so I have to put my chart of meals and blood sugar tests together for her before I go.
I've also got here to work on a medley of numbers from THE STUDENT PRINCE so I need to begin a rough draft of the piece this morning, and yesterday MTI delivered all the scores and band parts for THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.
Matt H had mentioned several weeks ago the Criterion edition of Pasolini's SALO, and now gay opera director David McVicar has staged the Richard Strauss opera SALOME, taken from Oscar Wilde's play, set in WW 2. The DVD publicity says it's inspired by Pasolini's film.

A bit of sun so far today. And of course we have to go SHOPPING!
Most of my horrible dining experiences are made so because the service is just so damned slow! Once in a town in Ohio coming back from King's Island, we stopped at Bob Evans and nobody was served food until one hour and fifteen minutes AFTER we were seated.
-
I loved all the movie quotes.......
and of course there are so many more.
Harold Hill: Can you recommend a good hotel?
Shopkeeper: Why'nt try the Palmer House in Chicago.
-
Back in a tick.
-
It's a wonderful morning!
That is all.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
I've either had no truly awful dining experiences and/or, if I have had one or two (or more), I've blocked it out.
I will say, that it's the bad service that will make it a "bad" dining experience. However, since so many of my friends are waiters and/or waitresses and/or servers - a.k.a. "actors" - I tend to be a bit forgiving when service is slow(er). And since my parents are both in the food service industry, I also know what can happen in the kitchen to hold up a meal, what is beyond the server's control.
If something truly bad come to mind later on, I'm sure I'll have time to post it between auditions. ;)
-
*And my auditions for the rest of the week don't start until 11:00am. How civilized! :)
-
Hmm... It does seem like something is up with the HHW server - the posts are taking a little bit 'o time to post.
-
All My Sons isn't selling well (or as well as they had hoped considering that KH is making her Broadway debut) but it's still not on TDF so I may try to get a half-price ticket for that as well.
That's probably a good thing. For Ms. Holmes-Cruise that is.
*I did find it a little "suspect" that The Times did a story on her transition from screen work to stage work a week or two or ago. Hmm...

Thanks for all the info about using aftershave. I had a feeling it was unnecessary. But this person seems to think it is. And is making me very sick each time!
Also re: costco. After my niece found out about the samples she liked that better than eating at the restaurant.
But i will say that a ton of people eat at the restaurant part here. It's very busy. aNd the food is pretty decent. I actually had no objection to going there, especially since i know how much my niece loves it.
But oddly enough my aunt hates the new restaurant just as much!
-
OK... Time for me to get ready to head downtown...
Laters...
-
Good morning. That's all I have to say.
-
Tuesday morning greetings! I am at work today, where there IS power, but left my family at home, where there is NOT. Yesterday was my regular day off for the week, so at least I could be with them and help with some clean-up.
It has been a most interesting 48 hours and appears that the interesting-ness will continue for a few days. Cincinnati and Dayton are in better shape than Butler (where we live) and Warren Counties, the two between those bigger cities.
We do, fortunately, have hot water and a TV and radio that we can run on batteries. Also, our land line phone is working, as are all the cell phones (which we can charge in the cars).
We lost a lot of limbs from the old trees around our house, but there was no damage to the house. Richard, Rob, and Mary Linda did a great job getting most of the debris cleaned up in time to be picked up by the trash crew today. I helped as I could and kept folks fed from our rapidly-thawing freezer. We ate up the ice cream Sunday night and the steaks last night (cooked on the outdoor grill). What we'll eat tonight is anyone's guess.
Thanks to DR Elmore for keeping you all informed and to everyone for vibes.
-

That's very interesting. And I need to fish out the DVD of SALOME'S LAST DANCE and watch that some time, too.

Good morning!
Blessed relief from Indian summer! It's very cool, and it had been raining hard earlier this morning, but it's just dripping rain right now. A high of only 72 today, so the doors and windows will be open all day long.
-
I had something very strange happen yesterday that has never happened before to my knowledge. I went into my bathroom to wash my hands before taking out my contacts, and I had no water at all, out of either the cold or hot tap. It was just like there was no plumbing in my house at all. I looked outside to see if there were city maintenance workers in the street, but I didn't see any. I got a trickle of water out of the hot tap in the kitchen, so I washed my hands in that (I was going to use bottled water if I had to).
About thirty minutes later, everything was back to normal. That's one of the weirder experiences I've had in my life.
-
I'll be working on the remaining episodes of CRIMINAL MINDS today. There are some more bonus featurettes in the set, too. I think there is one audio commentary, but I'm not sure. I haven't looked ahead carefully.
-
Tonight on TV:
HOUSE (season premiere)
FRINGE
THE SHIELD
-
Due to the demands of this reviewing job, I'm cutting a fair number of TV shows from my rotation this season. Though I will occasionally watch them if other shows are in reruns or bite the dust that are on opposite them, here are the shows that I will no longer be watching regularly each week: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, CSI: MIAMI, HOUSE, LAW & ORDER: SVU (if ELI STONE gets cancelled quickly, I'll go back to SVU), PRIVATE PRACTICE, CSI, MY NAME IS EARL, COLD CASE.
-
If I've had any awful food at restaurants before, I've blocked it from my memory. More often than not, it's mediocre rather than inedible.
However, the worst dining expierences I've had were either due to poor service or inappropriate behavior from the people I was dining with.
I remember a particularly nasty time in a restaurant in Tampa when some (former) friends got drunk during dinner. We had a very elderly waitress who was slow (but she got everything right; she must have been 65-70 years old). One of my drunken friends continually said rude, cutting things to her about the service, and I just found it appalling.
Our friendship ended during that trip after I confronted the rudest of the guys about his behavior. I never traveled with either of that couple again.
-
DR Ginny - thanks for the update; glad to hear that you and yours emerged relatively unscathed by Ike.
-
DR Michael S. - thank you for the bk television alert re: M*A*S*H for early this evening! :)
-
That is odd, DR Matt H. Not sure what could have caused a temporary water stoppage like that!
-
DR Ginny - thanks for the update; glad to hear that you and yours emerged relatively unscathed by Ike.
Thanks, DR Singdaw. We've been affected more by Ike than we expected and, unlike those in Texas, we had no warning. One of the challenges getting power back on here is that a lot of crews were sent to the Gulf Coast in anticipation of problems there and they're being recalled.

I think I will walk down to the nutritionist's office. It looks like rain but I think I can make it before the rain begins.
When I get back, laundry.

Our current theater viewing has been the incredible performance art of our new Roomba 560 robotic vacuum. Roomba has changed our lives. :)

Ooooh, I just got an email from Mrs. Zhuyuning with the subject line ACKNOWLEDGE MY PROPOSAL!!!!! (in all caps). Is it Sadie Hawkins Day in some third world country?

Roomba has a little computerized voice that tells you when something has gone awry. I was joking with Betsy today when it beeped that it was going to say, "Haven't you people ever heard of a broom and dustpan?"

Good morning, good day, how are you this beautiful day? I am up.
-
MattH, I had the exact same thing happen here with no water, and I wrote about it back then because it was so weird. I called the DWP who told me that the pipes had frozen and would unfreeze quickly, which is exactly what happened - took an hour.
-
It's a wonderful morning!
But have you got high hopes? :)

That's what we want to know.

MattH, I had the exact same thing happen here with no water, and I wrote about it back then because it was so weird. I called the DWP who told me that the pipes had frozen and would unfreeze quickly, which is exactly what happened - took an hour.
Beyond bizarre, I'm telling you. It was around 6:30 p.m. so there was no one to call, and I thought I'd just wait it out. Thankfully, all seems well now.
-
It is POURING down rain! The sky was starting to clear some and the rain had gone to a trickle, and then, it got dark again, and the bottom fell out. This looks to be another day of multiple inches of rain.
-
I've had plenty of bad dining experiences in terms of service - several of those times I've walked out of the restaurant, and other times I've mad a huge stink about it.
One of my worst dining experiences was when I was taken to an Indian restaurant back in the early 1970s. I'd never had Indian food and my cousins said I'd love it extra hot. And that's what we all ordered. I took one bite of whatever I had and that was the end of that. I thought I was going to die, my taste buds were certainly dead, I coughed for about twenty minutes straight, and drank about sixteen glasses of water and Diet Coke. And I've never eaten Indian food since.
One other I can remember, another meal with my cousins, was a Mexican restaurant where I was convinced to try the Chicken Mole. One bite of that particular Mole sauce was like eating fresh vomit and that was the end of THAT meal.
-
And now I'm heading down to fix spaghetti for lunch.
WBBL.
-
Ironically, several of my bad service horror tales happened in one restaurant - the now-closed Hamburger Hamlet on Hollywood Blvd.
-
At long last page three.
-
Has anyone else explored the hilarious prank phone calls on YouTube featuring WAV files of Judge Judy and Doctor Phil dealing with telemarketers? They're hilarious!
-
Hilarity ensues at the drop of many hats.
-
Looks like it's going to be a nice day.
-
And then there were the rancid shrimp cocktail shrimp at Daily Grill.
-

I hope those crews return soon & get your power back up soon.

DR GINNY sounds like I was in a little pocket of safety storm-wise last weekend.
-
Thanks, DR Jane! Yes, under the circumstances, we're doing fine. Getting to work today was a bit of a hassle, because a lot of traffic lights are still malfunctioning. I did manage to find gas for my car and breakfast (with coffee!!!) at McDonald's.
I let my hair air-dry on my extra-long commute, brought my curling iron and make-up with me, and finished my morning grooming here in my cube. I wouldn't have worried so much about my appearance, but have to give my 3-hour grantseeking basics class this afternoon.

I gotta ask, prior to this were you not aware you don't like hot, spicy food?
I am also shocked no one gave you a milk drink, or the white stuff (can't remember the name) that cuts the heat. Water & coke were possibly the worst thing you could have done.

DR GINNY sounds like I was in a little pocket of safety storm-wise last weekend.
DR JRand - count your blessings! From what we've heard from the weather wonks, we were at a critical point where the remnants of Ike crossed a cold front and that's why it was so bad in such a contained area.
-
I'm glad to hear you are ok, Ginny.
-
Worst dining experiences? Today's right up there - lunch from the vending machines: a bag of cheese crackers and a PayDay candy bar (at least I got a little protein). We do have a machine that has sandwiches and yogurt, but I didn't know how reliable that refrigeration had been over the past couple of days.
-
Ironically, several of my bad service horror tales happened in one restaurant - the now-closed Hamburger Hamlet on Hollywood Blvd.
Are there any left? My brother is sorry the one near him closed.
They had a delicious, extra high, chocolate cake. I liked their chocolate milk shakes too. Oh, and the corn bread was pretty good. All fattening foods, no wonder we didn't go there very often.
-
Thank you, DR Laura!
-
Most of my horrible nightmare dining experiences have simply become humorous over the years and part of the history of things.
I am usually very kind and patient with food servers, but I once went to lunch at a place I had dined at for about 9 years. I ordered what I always had ordered, and the waiter brought me the wrong thing and told me that what I wanted was called something else. I told him I had been ordering and eating the same salad there at least once or twice a week for 9 years. He started arguing with me and told me that I didn't know which salad was which. I slowly and calmly asked him to remove the wrong salad and bring me the one I wanted (whatever he chose to call that salad). I think that was about the only time I did not leave a tip.
-
I don't know that I've ever had a truly horrible dining experience, although to echo many, I've often had poor service.
My problem is that I'm very soft-spoken, and to my DH's eternal chagrin, very often it will happen that either I am not brought what I thought I had ordered, or part of my order does not arrive. :-\
-
I am a softee when it comes to tipping. I pretty much always leave 20%+, even when service hasn't been up to snuff.
-
DR Singdaw, I believe I have had a few problems with orders for the same reason.
-
One of my other horrible experiences had nothing to do with anyone else doing anything wrong. It was one of my first dates with DRMusicGuy lo those many years ago. I am not particularly fond of crab legs and don't find them worth all the trouble. If you have have that many implements to get to the food, perhaps you should change foods. And the hardest part to get is always, "the sweetest meat." I think there is probably someone somewhere who considers chicken beaks the sweetest meat.
At any rate, at some point while cracking open one of the crab legs, I thought I saw something fly in front of me, and it felt like something had landed on my head. I asked Lyn if there was anything in my hair (I had a lot of it at the time). He said he couldn't see anything. I thought I did pretty well throughout the evening, and we got along well. It was only later that I went to the restroom and saw that not only did I have a huge piece of crab on the top of my head, but I had spilled a glop of guacamole on the crotch of my pants, and the cuffs of my pants (very deep cuffs as it was 1973) had some peas and corn in them that had fallen there. I was humiliated but thought how absurd it was and still find it funny. It was probably a good week though, before I'd go out and eat in public again.
I always figure something like that would have happened to me had I dined with Fred Astaire-- crab on my head, guacamole on my crotch and my cuffs filled with crumbs and peas and corn!
-
I have worked in restaurants; most of my friends have, and my sister was a waitress for about 7 years while going to school, so I usually overtip and try to apologize for the many customers who are not nice.
But I am a picky eater and like things to be served the way I order them (dressing on the side or a steak well-done, etc.) and I try to be very clear and very gracious about it. Most of the time, there are no problems.
-
We once had a waitress at a coffee shop who went around the table, of the 6 people in our party, only two were having coffee. She read the order back to us as "That'll be two coffees and 4 no coffees."
-

But before I head out to get some fresh air...

Evil Dead: The Musical in 3-D may begin shooting as soon as next spring! :D

Scary times: there was a line out the door and snaking back through Fred Meyer today of people lining up to get their money out of WaMu. Our vet's wife and I were first in line (I was actually just cashing a check) and we talked about how frightening this all is. Luckily we do almost all of our banking online now, so I don't think that those functions would be disabled even if WaMu fails, which a lot of analysts are now predicting.
-
Acting is communication.
What we have here is a lack of acting... ;)
-
I feel tipping over 15% when service has not been good is a function of whether I intend to go back to that restaurant again.
-
Still not completely caught up.
Power vibes to Ginny.
-
Hey, crabhead - pass the salt, please.
A homeless person could have dined off the food on my pants for a week!

Hmmm... I bank with WaMu. Should I not any more?

From curtainup.com - some quibbles, but the McCarter thought it was good enough to link on their Herringbone blog

TOD:
A few weeks ago, I ordered one of my favorite sandwiches at a local market. The Creamy Chicken Salad. The person asked for my first name, so I told her, "Kerry."
So I heard her giving my order to the person who makes the sandwiches, and she said "A Chicken Curry Sandwich." I told her that I had ordered the Chicken Salad sandwich and my name was Kerry and that if she gave me the Chicken Curry Salad that I would just have to sit down right there and cry.

DR Ron, a couple of comments on your CLOSER SPOILER:MORE SPOILERS!
I completely understand why these things bothered you. I was wrapped up enough in the show to let them slide, & can explain some of them away. Just as I was wondering why no one was aiming for the head, Brenda shouted for them to do so (you must have missed that).
I did not miss that. It came WAY too late. My feeling is that I should not have noticed it "before" they did. They were just wasting dozens of rounds of ammo and it was apparent to me "why" long before Brenda told them. I'm certain my neighbors heard me shouting at them to shoot for his head.
As for using the police helicopter, could be cuz it was already right above them.
The trouble here is that a medical helicopter "should have been there" when the bomb squads were alerted. The other trouble is that when you say it was "above them"...it was, when they were on the roof. And then there it was in that empty parking lot. PLENTY of time elapsed between the time they lugged that man down stairs and out of the mall and way into an empty parking lot for a medical helo with trained personnel aboard to respond to the scene.
As for the fumbling words in the helicopter, the major loss of time was to lean over and hear what the injured officer was saying to him.
The wounded man had a collapsed lung and was spitting up blood. No one should have been leaning in to hear him say anything. Someone wounded isn't the best judge of what's right in the situation. Brenda was desperate to get the wounded man to a hospital and precious seconds were wasted...possible life-threatening seconds. I was shouting at the TV like a madman for that white-haired fool to get his butt out of that door so the helo could take off.
I know...it's all dramatic license. It's just terrible police work.

Hmmm... I bank with WaMu. Should I not any more?
I think it depends on how liquid you need your cash to remain. We have a lot (a LOT) of $ at WaMu in various instruments we can't touch (CDs, Gabe's insurance settlement from when he was hit by a car, etc.), so we have to ride this one out. We typically keep several thousand in checking, and we're talking about maybe getting that whittled down to a bare minimum, just in case. I'd just stay tuned to news, in other words.
-
And I had a loverly walk down to the appointment; took me about 40 minutes to do it. Now I have to deal with THE STUDENT PRINCE score for a bit.
-
But have you got high hopes? :)
Of course I do, you silly ram!
-
But have you got high hopes? :)
I've got high apple pie in the sky hopes.
-
That's what we want to know.
I'll save that for your Shanghai Surprise.
-
I gotta ask, prior to this were you not aware you don't like hot, spicy food?
I am also shocked no one gave you a milk drink, or the white stuff (can't remember the name) that cuts the heat. Water & coke were possibly the worst thing you could have done.
I had/have no problem with spicy food - I regularly eat spicy Chinese food dishes, etc. This was so beyond anything any normal human being could take - I mean, this literally killed the taste buds and set me on fire. At that point, it's ridiculous, don't you think?
-
Are there any left? My brother is sorry the one near him closed.
They had a delicious, extra high, chocolate cake. I liked their chocolate milk shakes too. Oh, and the corn bread was pretty good. All fattening foods, no wonder we didn't go there very often.
I think there are two left - Sherman Oaks and Sunset Blvd. (maybe the one in Brentwood is still there - not sure).
-
The Evil Dead thing is very annoying to me for selfish reasons. When we were doing the Brain in NY and then in Anaheim I kept telling anyone who would listen that it was perfect for the Sci-Fi channel and 3-D - and that's the bad thing about not having an agent to hawk this stuff - I'd have no idea who to call.
-
Nice reviews for Skip! Thanks for posting them DR FJL!
-
Great reviews.
-
DR Elmore, was your nutritionist happy with your recent sugar levels?
-
Back from the long jog, and listening to the delightfully delightful Joanie Sommers album Sommers' Seasons, available only on a Japanese mini LP CD, I think.
-
I'm halfway through But He Doesn't Know The Territory. I'll probably finish it after the work session today.
-
At long last, page five.
-
BK, next time I am in town I am taking you to an Indian place to have some mild food. I never have the really spicy stuff.
-
Catch him if you can! :)
-
DR Elmore, was your nutritionist happy with your recent sugar levels?
For the most part, yes.
-
Well, that's good.

And your reason for bringing this up is . . .?
-
TOD:
A few weeks ago, I ordered one of my favorite sandwiches at a local market. The Creamy Chicken Salad. The person asked for my first name, so I told her, "Kerry."
So I heard her giving my order to the person who makes the sandwiches, and she said "A Chicken Curry Sandwich." I told her that I had ordered the Chicken Salad sandwich and my name was Kerry and that if she gave me the Chicken Curry Salad that I would just have to sit down right there and cry.
;D
-
That sounds like just the ticket! :)
I agree :)

The title of today's notes! :)

Yes, though Indian food can be very spicy. We always order mild & find it delicious. The boys order spicy to extreme. Someone still should have suggested more appropriate cooling agents when you were suffering. Likely today they would be more helpful/knowledgeable.
-
I think there are two left - Sherman Oaks and Sunset Blvd. (maybe the one in Brentwood is still there - not sure).
Nope, that was the one near my brother. Is Beverly Hills gone? What is there now?
-
DR Ron, ;D I can't disagree with your spoilers, only had a milder reaction to your complaints. And I was aware of them while watching, just focused more on the emotion.
-
Hmmm... I bank with WaMu. Should I not any more?
Unless you have MEGA, MEGA bucks I wouldn’t be too concerned. Your money should be there. It is sad people are rushing to get their money which can create a problem that didn’t exist.
There is some speculation JP Morgan will purchase WaMu.
Off to deposit some money INTO our WaMu account.
-
And here i thought you were being euphemistic!
Or perhaps BK was?
-
The rain has stopped but the coolness remains. I actually turned off the attic fan and just let the cool air come in naturally. I'm sitting next to the open window in my office, and it's just heaven.

I must have missed it: WaMu is which bank?

In the midst of three or four lengthy phone calls this afternoon, I didn't quite get all four of the CRIMINAL MINDS episodes I had hoped to watch today finished. I still have about half an hour left on one of them. And there are some deleted scenes for two of the episodes I've yet to watch.
-
Hopefully tonight, I can get all four remaining episodes watched on disc five and then the remaining featurettes and be done with this box set.
Dennis Christopher is the primary guest star on the episode I'm currently watching. He usually plays creeps now, so it wouldn't surprise me if he's somehow involved with the case.
-
I did have time to scan quickly through AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing and nothing in the previews.
-
I thought I'd put it behind me mentally, because things have turned out quite well for me job-wise, but you never forget those who cheated you, i guess -
Having allegedly (in a legal battle where they managed to scare off my employment-law attorney) been hoodwinked by AIG's personnel person's lies out of many tens of thousands of dollars in stock options, but having faced a brick wall in an industry which then felt AIG was a noble organization, I'm personally glad to see that AIG is going through trouble, and that I sold pretty much all my AIG stock a long long time ago.
-

I've been thinking about this; now that colleges and schools are back in session, I don't think the producers care about their late teen/young adult audience. Ehat's his face didn't even show up today to rescue his littkle brother.

Thanks for posting the review links, DR FJL!
And thanks DR ELMORE for the SALOME review link....that sounds like my kind of show!

Makes perfect sense, and thanks for sharing. I hadn't even considered that, but it's certainly understandable.
-
Now, I've got to write for a bit and then head back down to try to finish CRIMINAL MINDS tonight. I may have to wait and watch FRINGE tomorrow if I'm not close to finishing it when it's time to start watching on the DVR.
WBBL.

The September edition of Grantseeking Basics is history. I only have to teach this class 3 more times!
-
...
Power vibes to Ginny.
Thanks, DR FJL! The novelty has definitely worn off.
-
Now I'm about to go home and see what's what. Probably won't be back online until I'm back here at work tomorrow. But we can always hope...
-
Check your blood sugar.
I did. It was 71! That should put DR MBarnum's panties in a bunch.
-
I am having a blast listening to Beyond the Fringe. Can you believe I've never heard it before in all these years?
-
DR Michael S. - thank you for the bk television alert re: M*A*S*H for early this evening! :)
I bought this episode on videotape that has another (so far, unwatched) episode. I've never seen it broadcast on TV, though. :D
-
MattH, I had the exact same thing happen here with no water, and I wrote about it back then because it was so weird. I called the DWP who told me that the pipes had frozen and would unfreeze quickly, which is exactly what happened - took an hour.
Hopefully, the pipes didn't expand and burst while the water was frozen! :-\
-
And who here besides Tomovoz knows the Sergio Mendes connection to M*A*S*H the t.v. show?
-
I am a softee when it comes to tipping. I pretty much always leave 20%+, even when service hasn't been up to snuff.
It takes a lot for me to not leave a tip, but I'll only tip 10% or so if it's not great (but not horrible) service and more if it's good. Our local sales tax is 8.4%, so the easiest way to figure a tip is to double the tax for about a 17% tip. That's usually a good amount.
My dad said that if you receive very bad service, you shouldn't not leave a tip. You should leave a penny to show that they know you're deliberately leaving something and to let them know that they gave bad service. Fortunately, I've only left a penny once or twice...but I've removed the experiences from my memory. ;)

I must have missed it: WaMu is which bank?
Washington Mutual.
-
Scary times: there was a line out the door and snaking back through Fred Meyer today of people lining up to get their money out of WaMu. Our vet's wife and I were first in line (I was actually just cashing a check) and we talked about how frightening this all is. Luckily we do almost all of our banking online now, so I don't think that those functions would be disabled even if WaMu fails, which a lot of analysts are now predicting.
Where's Clarence when you need him??

Some nice reviews for Skip's show Herringbone at the McCarter in Princeton NJ:
Newark Star Ledger - very good, feels like a possible money review in terms of selling tickets

From curtainup.com - some quibbles, but the McCarter thought it was good enough to link on their Herringbone blog
http://www.curtainup.com/herringbonenj.html (http://www.curtainup.com/herringbonenj.html)
Here's the Philadelphia Inquirer review; she really likes it a lot

I was able to record the re-broadcast of the premiere episode and I'm recording the next episode, as well. I should be able to watch the first episode soon. :)

So...will anyone in NYC be watching (and/or recording ;)) THIS (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/121388.html) play??

Washington Mutual.
Which for some strange reason thought spending a fortune to legally change the name to their nickname (we never used it), WaMu, was a smart idea.
My favorite teller at the bank said it was business as usual there.
-

We haven't removed the experience from our memory. We were in high school & were treated so poorly Keith left a penny tip. The waitress chased us down & threw the penny at us. We were so humiliated, Keith more than I ;D, we have never done that again.
-
My favorite teller at the bank said it was business as usual there.
At first, I read this as "My fortune teller at the bank..."
:D
-
I did. It was 71! That should put DR MBarnum's panties in a bunch.
Spoo! Mine is 127 right now.

All My Sons isn't selling well (or as well as they had hoped considering that KH is making her Broadway debut) but it's still not on TDF so I may try to get a half-price ticket for that as well.
Did they really expect that Katie Holmes would be that big of a draw? It is still Arthur Miller, and there is no naked Daniel Radcliffe in the show.
-
Do you think the waitress was unaware of how bad the service she gave you was?
-
Matt H had mentioned several weeks ago the Criterion edition of Pasolini's SALO, and now gay opera director David McVicar has staged the Richard Strauss opera SALOME, taken from Oscar Wilde's play, set in WW 2. The DVD publicity says it's inspired by Pasolini's film.
Did anyone notice if the artists could sing?

The worst meal I ever had was at Miceli's. I ordered some type of chicken manicotti. The first thing I noticed was that it had a layer of melted cheese over the whole thing that was about an inch thick. Now I like melted cheese just as much as the next guy, but when there's such a thick layer, it's really not appealing. The next thing I noticed was that the whole thing was swimming in melted butter. Now I like melted butter just as much as the next guy, but when your entree is swimming (maybe doing the backstroke?) in a pool if it, it's really not appealing. Then, I finally ventured to take a bit. It had absolutely no flavor at all! It was completely void of any seasoning, not even salt. And the last thing I discovered, the straw that really broke the gazelle's back, was that the chicken was DARK MEAT chicken! I couldn't believe it. And I'm really unfussy when it comes to food preparation. I can eat hospital food, airplane food (when there used to be airplane food), school cafeteria food, and actually enjoy it. So, if I tell you that an entree was bad, that means it was really really bad! I took about two bites and pushed it aside. The next time I went to Miceli's (it's hard to find something open very late), I ordered spaghetti and meat balls because it's hard to screw that up. It was fine.

Who cares if you can sing when you're doing the Dance of the 7 Veils? ;)

I watched the first episode of FRINGE this weekend.

I sort of liked it. Well enough to watch again this week. I find the lead woman very appealing. And i love joshua jackson. The only thing is i would have not have taken the direction they did with mark valley (is that the guy's name from boston legal). But it was pretty good.

Tonight i have at:
9pm the season finale of Big Brother (I have no idea who will win but i really want dan).
Actually also at 9pm here are:

I did not get to watch last night's The Hills yet (maybe tomorrow).
I had to bake banana muffins and chocolate cupcakes for my niece's birthday.
-
Do you think the waitress was unaware of how bad the service she gave you was?
Today we might be verbal about it. I can't remember what we did as 17 year olds.
-
DR Jennifer, the muffins & cupcakes sound yummy.
Yes, Mark Valley is from BOSTON LEGAL.
-
DR Amy, your chicken manicotti sounds very similar to an eggplant Parmesan dish Keith once ordered. :P
-
DR Jennifer, the muffins & cupcakes sound yummy.
Yes, Mark Valley is from BOSTON LEGAL.
Well she needs the cupcakes for her daycare party.
And she asked if i would make her banana muffins for her birthday weeks ago.
-
A homeless person could have dined off the food on my pants for a week!
I would love to see you offer the homeless person the guacamole!
-
I'm seeing A Man for All Seasons with the masterful Frank Langella tomorrow evening.
OH! Tellme how it is!!!
-
Jane, no the Beverly Hills Hamlet has been gone for years, one of the first to go. Can't remember what's there now, but I think it's still a restaurant of some sort.
-
At long last, page seven. Which is not an even number even though even is seven with an "s" stuck on.

How wonderful to see DR Ginny here! I am glad that you got off relatively "lightly" as far a sstorm damage... I hope that your power is back on when you get home!

Back from a work session. I'm working with a musical director that's new to me, but it's good because he's doing the Kevin and Sean show in October. He's a very nice guy and very open to comments and suggestions. I had the singer sing through her song list. Some things became apparent to me right away and I was able to give some focus to what she was trying to do - it had no focus at all, basically. I came up with a "theme" and through-line for the show, and that's the hardest part. I suggested cutting one song entirely, and replacing it with one of my faves, Secret Love - everyone liked that idea. I had some perfunctory comments about a couple of arrangements, and then I told the singer to go home with these notes and start creating the linking patter between songs, now that she knows where we're going. I'm going to futz with the song order so that it makes more sense with this new direction. I must say, I do like doing these things - unfortunately, I cannot spend too much time with this one because the singer has very little dough and I agreed to do it for a small amount of money but said that that would only buy so much of my time.
-
During the run, it was totally cloudy and very cool - now it feels like it's eighty degrees. Go know.
-
Jane, no the Beverly Hills Hamlet has been gone for years, one of the first to go. Can't remember what's there now, but I think it's still a restaurant of some sort.
That's what I thought, yet in my mind I only see the Hamlet.

Fortunately, network standards won out and this was not included in Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin.
After all, one "costume malfunction" per decade is quite enough.
;)
-
I may also go to the Half-Price booth on Saturday and get a ticket to Equus.
Because you want to see the costumes for the horses, right?
-
I don't do smarmy.
No...don't ask me!

I don't do smarmy.
No...don't ask me!
Replace that first m with an n and that last m with a k, though, and I think we have a winner! ;D

Virus computer goes back in tomorrow.....so don't be alarmed....I may have a laptop to stay in touch....time will tell...
-
What is a virus computer?
-
I've been watching a DVD that arrived this afternoon - very interesting stuff, which I'll have lots more to say about in Ye Olde Notes.
-
We're STILL on page seven?
-
We can't be on page eight?
-
That would be too difficult? I guess so - it would mean that the errant and truant would have to get off their collective ASSES and post.
-
BK - will the artist be singing the verse to "Secret Love?"
-
And I mean that in the nicest possible way.
-
BK - will the artist be singing the verse to "Secret Love?"
Could be.

I think there are two left - Sherman Oaks and Sunset Blvd. (maybe the one in Brentwood is still there - not sure).
A quick Google shows that there are currently seven Hamburger Hamlet restaurants (http://hamletrestaurants.com/index.php?q=locations.html), although they are now known as Hamlet, Hamburger having been dropped (and the five second rule applies).
In SoCal, they are the Hamlet Pasadena (on Lake - been there, done that), Hamlet Sherman Oaks, Hamlet West L.A., and Hamlet on Sunset (also been there, done that - Log Cabin held a couple of dinner meetings there, quite a while back).
Then there are also the Eate Coast Hamlets: the Hamlet at the Rio (in Gaithersberg) and the Hamlet Bethesda, both in Maryland, and the Hamlet Crystal City, in Arlington, Virginia.
Alas, poor Yorick, while we knew them well (or medium-rare, my doneness of choice), the rest have gone to dust.
-
I want to go and watch the special features on GIGI and AN AMERICAN IN PARIS and then one of the movies itself.
-
But, if I can help to post our way to page eight, which incidentally is a real number, then I'll say a few random things.
-
Will we ever see page eight?
-
They dropped the Hamburger? How unseemly. Trying to be trendy, but then the hamburger comes back in favor and then where are they?
The Hamlet hasn't been the Hamburger Hamlet that we all knew and loved since long before the name change. I sort of gave up on it when they removed my favorite meal - fried catfish and clams, then removed the fried clams. Then they had a pasta I enjoyed and they got rid of that, too. And the gloriously glorious lobster bisque became so runny and filled with other specious fishies, that I just don't go there very often. They do have a salad I'm fond of, but it's probably gone, too.
-
Oh, and they got rid of the popcorn shrimp, too. Stupid people.
-
...Is Beverly Hills gone? What is there now?
According to Wikipedia, Beverly Hills is still an incorporated city.
;D
-
And where is the West LA Hamlet, pray tell, O expert One? The West LA Hamlet that WE all knew and went to, on Broxton, is a Jerry's Deli.
-
Did I mention that I like the way that Judy Kaye performs the verse to "Secret Love," as produced by our own esteemed BK?
-
I know not of any other Hamburger Hamlets. The one that was in Long Beach was gone even before we left. (It became some sort of Texas-style steak joint, as I recall.)
Another recollection: a lot of the HHs were bought out by some chicken chain, something with a wierd name, but I cannot remember the name right now.
-
And where is the West LA Hamlet, pray tell, O expert One? The West LA Hamlet that WE all knew and went to, on Broxton, is a Jerry's Deli.
I was about to tell you to click on the words "Hamlet restaurants" in my earlier post, because they would take you to the map of the current Hamlet locations, but when I checked the link myself it, uh, didn't work.
It works now, however.
But if you don't have that kind of energy, the West LA location is on Sepulveda.
-
Can't find the name of that Chicken chain, but I did just find out that Elmer Dills has died.
Dills was a very good, and very fair, restaurant critic in the Los Angeles area, not one for simply dishing the places he was reviewing.

One more item, before I cut this off to watch EUReKA -
HEY, GEORGE!!!
The second volume of Murray Gold's Doctor Who soundtrack, covering Series Three (and a bit more) is out, and it is great!
How many other series have had a full orchestra to play the music, huh? Wow! And, to quote the Doctor himself, "Fantastic!"

Good Evening!
Today was a good day of auditions. The call was primarily for "Actors Who Sing", but we ended up having a couple of "Actors Who Sing Really Well" come in today. -And some of the "Actors Who Can Carry A Tune Well" were quite wonderful too. I'm looking forward to the rest of this week, the rest of the "process".
I was truly awed by some of the Talent who came in. There were times I found myself having an honest to goodness laugh, and there were other times when I was moved to tears. -Along with the rest of us "behind the table". Good material and Good actors. Inspiring!
-
After my auditions were done, I met up with Jason for dinner at East of Eighth. I had signed up for the mailing list, and they sent me a "Free Dinner" coupon, so... :)
We had a great time catching up, and the food was dee-lish too.
-
A question because frankly I've felt this about auditions - When one is surprised by the level of talent that comes in to audition for a particular job, is that a sign that times are hard for actors and they're auditioning for something they might not otherwise audition for?
-

Hmm... Good question... However...
The people who came in today were either submitted by their agents or were asked to come in, so... But what made today sort of "extraordinary' for me was that out of all the people we saw today, there were really only two or three people who did not "fit". Each time someone would leave the room, and they would say, "That's the one!", another person would come in who could also be "the one!".
Otherwise, I think the "surprise" element goes in cycles, and it really depends who and what you've seen before and after the "surprise". I also believe Good Actors just always want to Act, and want to be a part of good shows. If you cast it, they will come. ;)
-
I really love when you tell these stories Jose. You have such intersting days, while I go and sit in the same chair doing the same thing day and day out.
In my next life I demand to be born with talent!!!
-
Speakingof talent... congratulations to Skip onteh heringbone reviews.. I hope I can get over to see it before it is over
this weekend we have a suprise 50th birthday party to go to and the following weekend we are attending a wedding
maybe the week after will be the charm!!
-
Nice blood sugar readings Elmore!!
-
Ironically, several of my bad service horror tales happened in one restaurant - the now-closed Hamburger Hamlet on Hollywood Blvd.
And you kept going back for more?? ;)

We are having a very warm evening. Off to watch HOUSE in the air conditiioned bedroom.

Tomorrow night I'm going to see Chicago. I have never seen the musical. I've seen the movie and have known all the music, but this will be the first time I've seen it on stage. I'm looking forward to it.

Hmm, if the tour doesn't kick off until November, then I wonder what cast we're going to see tomorrow.

Apparently the Fed has agreed to bail out AIG

and off to beddy bye for me

This Fred thinks the Fed should allow AIG to stew in its own allegedly fraudulently-behaved (towards me, anyway) juices.

DR Jennifer, the muffins & cupcakes sound yummy.
Yes, Mark Valley is from BOSTON LEGAL.
But he is REALLY at his greatest in KEEN EDDIE, a show with only lasted half a season but which shows him in both a comedic and action oriented role. (It is available on DVD.)
Get this man another show of his own QUICKLY!

Well, I did get the rest of the CRIMINAL MINDS episodes finished including the silly cliffhanging season finale. My, how I am tired of those!
Season 3 really was a good year for CRIMINAL MINDS. No real duds and some interesting guest stars, sometimes playing the bad guys and sometimes not. Interesting to say the least how they switch those out.

Hmm, if the tour doesn't kick off until November, then I wonder what cast we're going to see tomorrow.
There's a non-Equity tour out right now - that went out as soon as the previous Equity tour shut down a couple of months ago. -Then the Weisslers decided to mount another full-scale Equity tour, so...
-
Well... I guess it had to happen some time...

And speaking of Chicago...

*Maybe DR MBarnum could fly out to one of the cities and arrange an interview with Mr. Wopat.
The tour begins here! I could fix you up in the guest room, DR MBarnum! ;D
I have seen CHICAGO so many times, so I'll be passing on this one.

Page Nine Dorothy Dance!!!

I watched the rest of the bonus features on the CRIMINAL MINDS discs, too including a 20 minute feature on the season as a whole. But did THAT give away every surprise during the season. No wonder they placed it on the last disc!
-
I did have a chance to watch tonight's FRINGE. Entertaining for the sci-fi it is/was, but so far the show isn't grabbing me hard like LOST did (or ALIAS before it). I'll give it another couple of weeks.
-
And I'll be watching tonight's episode of THE SHIELD tomorrow while I cook and eat lunch.

I'm tired of the non-equity tours. Some are ok, but some are really not.
-
OK - More auditions in the morning, so...
Goodnight.

This Fred thinks the Fed should allow AIG to stew in its own allegedly fraudulently-behaved (towards me, anyway) juices.
I agree. The government suddenly has eighty billion dollars to pass around. Nice.

Broadway's Xanadu to Close in October

These producers were amazing. A David Merrick would have closed the show after the first week. I guarantee you, Xanadu is closing at a complete loss - maybe they'll make some of it up on a tour, but I don't think audiences around the country are going to like the show.
-
Oh, my. It's after midnight here, and I must go to bed.
Good night!
-
Back from an absolutely wonderful meal at La La's. I did the single chicken breast tonight and it was the best it's ever been. And the little side salad was great, too. As was the company.
-
Think I'll have some red licorice for deesert, since dinner was very calorie-friendly, especially with the long jog.
-
I probably won't have time to watch anything all the way through, but I'll go watch something.
-
All alone on the board. Any Mayhem I can cause?
-
I guess I'll save post #12345 for another day.
-
The tour that I saw of CHICAGO a few years back was the Tom Wopat one, and he was wonderful! And of course getting to meet and chat with Mr. Wopat was a highlight.

Look, two of my interviewees in the same photo!
