Title: NOTES WITH BOTOX
Post by: bk on September 20, 2008, 12:15:48 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes with Botox were very reminiscent of Meg Ryan, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having Botox injections and then they'll be MOOving right along.

The most exotic salad that I think I've had was the Oriental chicken salad at Applebee's. ;) It's very good.  I actually did prefer their low fat Asian chicken salad, but they don't have that anymore.

I stayed at work late last night because it's the time-to-pay-the-bills-for-the-monthly-board-meeting time and I (with others) have to have the bills paid before Monday morning.  I didn't finish what I started before I had to leave last night, so I have to go in, in the morning.  Since I also have to make up some time, it's a good thing.  We can't get overtime, so if I don't finish what I started to work on, I would have to finish it on my own time. :P If I had thought about it, I could've held back some invoices and paid them next month...but I didn't. ;)

A very busy day yesterday and another today. I worked from 8am-5:30pm and then went home to change as I was participating in Toastmaster regional contest in Fort Lauderdale. I was the test speaker for area Speech Evaluation Contest.

I always call 511 before heading out on the I-95 and the traffic report was the usual slow traffic during rush hour so I took the I-95. Well sometime between I called and I got on the I95 things changes. A tractor trailer broke down in the middle lane and back up traffic even more.

I was afraid I would be late. I got off at the next exit and took a back road. The traffic was much better and I made practically every green light. I made the contest with about 5 minutes to spare,

My speech was my retelling of the fable of The Tortoise and Hare. I mixed a little of the classic fable with Disney's version, Bugs Bunny's version and mine. It went very well. All five of the contestants gave me high marks with some constructive criticism. (which I actually did on purpose so they would have some to do in this area.)

I will be giving the speech again on Monday at my group as one of my speeches for my advance speaker series in Story Telling.

As is so common these days, we have a salad bar at the store.  It's a good thing we're a supermarket, and not a tire store - the combination of lettuce and veggies and the smell of rubber just does not mix.

But I'm just as likely to use the salad bar as a place to get ingredients for whatever I'm fixing for dinner that night.  It's a great place to get toppings for pizzas, for instance.

I've made fruit salad several times.  Some melon pieces, some berries, and some yogurt as the dressing.  Yoplait Key Lime Thick and Creamy works particularly well.

Good morning, all! I have go down to Toyland this morning and spend a bit of the day there.  I'll take along a salad with mushrooms, red and orange peppers, bits of low-fat cheddar cheese, and sliced chicken breast.

I have no other plans for today, except to accomplish some work and get back here in one piece.

I'll be an expert on the differences between season 1 and season 2 opening montages.  And as someone noted on youtube, ABC shows back then really did enjoy putting their stars in those little circles while the opening songs played.

T.O.D.:

I've never been a big salad guy, but two which I enjoy are:

Shredder carrots.  Chopped Walnuts.  Raisins.  Marzetti's Cole Slaw Dressing.

Fresh Broccoli Florettes.  Small Cubes Sharp Cheddar Cheese.  Freshly Crumbled Bacon.  Marsetti's Cole Slaw Dressing.

I sometimes can go for a Pittsburgh style Steak or Chicken Salad:
Assorted Greens (I prefer Spring Mix).  Grilled Steak or Chicken (with the chicken rolling in Tom's Hot Sauce).  French Fries.

As for the Topic of the Day...

There's a pre-pack salad mix that has radicchio, feta cheese, dried cranberries and hazelnuts with a white balsamic dressing... That's YUM!

I really like the salads at Pinch & S'Mac (http://www.pinchandsmac.com/menu.html), especially their "Red" (Arugula, Radicchio, Red Onion, Red Grapefruit, Shaved Grana w/ Extra Virgin Oliver Oil and Grapefruit Juice); "Spinach" (Baby Spinach, Apples, Grilled Onions, Gorgonzola and Walnuts with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Agrodulce); and their "Arugula 2" (Arugula, Pears, Hazelnuts, w/ Roasted Pear Vinagrette).

When I'm at home, I keep it very simple: mesclun (sometimes with some mache) dressed with EVOO and balsamic vinegar.

I mowed my front yard this morning. The rain we've had over the last 10 days and the moderate temperatures made it shoot right up and look very ragged. Now, with a little luck, I won't have to mow the front many more times this year. I still have the back yard to do, but it's much less grown up as it's so completely shaded by huge oak trees.

Today I'll be trying my best to finish the bonus features on THE GODFATHER set. Next will come another TV box set - CSI: NY. As it's my favorite of the CSI shows, I'm looking forward to watching the episodes again. And if the set is typical of previous editions, it should look very good even in SD.

I make simple garden salads at home for myself. They're quick and easy to do.

I LOVE Waldorf salad but especially if there are seedless green grapes in it. One cafeteria here used to put chopped celery in their version of the salad which always turned me off. I guess it was to cut the sweetness from the other ingredients, but that's why I want Waldorf salad. I want it to be sweet.

My mom used to do a wonderful carrot salad with orange Jell-O, pineapple, and other wonderful things. I miss that.

AMERICAN GANGSTER is coming on HBO-HD tonight, but I'm not sure I'm really interested in seeing it. I reviewed the PBS video set on gangsters, and this story was in there, so I'm not sure I want to revisit it again, especially since it's a pretty long movie, and I haven't even found the time to watch MICHAEL CLAYTON from last week yet.

DR JMK, it sounds like you've moved WAY up the list of reviewers at your site from when you first started since it seems you're getting a lot of high profile titles that you weren't getting a few months ago. Congratulations on that.

I have a very full plate, too, and I don't mind being so busy and not having a lot of time to watch things for fun. I just hate my time being taken up with crappy stuff. I've got a movie coming up with Danny McBride that looks ridiculous, but there it is.

I guess they all can't be Criterion Collection selections.

I think it's luck more than anything, LOL.  DVDTalk doesn't work like HTF--there's no "assigned studio" to any one reviewer.  A lot of what I get I select myself from the screener pool that's kind of first come first served.  That said, I have been there over a year now, so maybe they know I can write a mostly comprehensible sentence.  I get the feeling I'm one of the older reviewers there, so perhaps they're deferring to the "old man".   ;D

I just looked at the list for the Hollywood Collector's Show - he must have really had a wake-up call, because he's really loaded up the celebs this time with many who've never done the show before, including Leslie Nielsen and other really popular folks.  Unfortunately, it's October 4th, the same day as my book signing and reading.  Of course, people can go there in the morning, do the ten-minute drive over to the signing and go right back, not that there will be many of my people at the show, save for Druxy who is wrangling Roger Corman.  I might go over there after the signing, but I also have an event to go to that night, so unless I go at eleven, hang out, and then go to the signing, I won't be there at all on Saturday.  And knowing me, I'll have to at least read through the portions I'll be reading at the signing and I won't have the patience to visit the show.  So, it's Sunday for me.

I have two unsolicited DVD recommendations, the aforementioned Speed Racer on Blu-Ray, which, if you've been wondering what the HD fuss is all about will show you in spades, and then some.  But also my highest recommendation goes out for the really stunning and at times infuriating documentary Breaking the Maya Code by David Lebrun.  Even if you don't have any particular interest in the subject, you'll find it fascinating.

Salads?

The greatest salad in the history of the world no longer exists.

It was the original Cobb Salad, created by The Brown Derby restaurant which, sadly, no longer exists either.

Yes, you can find the Cobb Salad listed on the menus of many restaurants, but they are not the same.

Nobody makes the Cobb Salad like they did at The Brown Derby.

Speaking of "Enter Laughing" the movie, I urge all Hainsies and Kimlets in the New York area to see "Enter Laughing" the musical at the York Theatre.  It just extended its run by two weeks (late October) but there is another show coming in after that so unless it moves or returns in January, that could be your last chance.  It got a rave in the Times, 4* in the Post and great reviews from other publications and internet sites and is one of the funniest musicals I have ever seen.  For a 25% discount, use the code DAVID (although I don't know if that code is good for the extension).

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from MoMA... Where I am currently standing in line to get into the Van Gogh exhibit one more time (at least). And it looks like the staff here are getting a preview of what the lines will be like once the exhibition opens up to the public tomorrow. The Members Only line was about a hundred deep when I got here, but it moved fast.  However, I've already seen a couple of exasperated faces on some staff members this afternoon. -Hopefully, none of them will get to the point where they would get the urge to chop off an ear - their own or otherwise.

When I was at the Naval Academy, our illustrious chef Louis LaForge imported a Washington DC specialty - Senate Salad. The main tables had theirs served from a giant polished mahogany bowl on loan from the Senate (it was a gift from the Philippine Government).

The salad consisted of mixed greens adorned with bay shrimp, green pepper, green onion, and walnuts encapsulated in a savory tomato aspic.

Really good!

Time for to watch a Bollywood movie....today it will be ANITA (1969) a mystery thriller that I have wanted to see ever since I bought the poster for the movie!

It stars Manoj Kumar and Sadhana.

Is this a different musical than STAGE STRUCK, which was also a musical version of ENTER LAUGHING (which I happen to own the CD)?

My dear friend, Sharry O'Hare and I cut our comic-timing teeth in ENTER LAUGHING back in the 70s.  I was the drunken theater director and star; and she played my daughter.

I am currently wending my way through "Here Is Every", which is basically a representation of Art and "un-Art" from the past 40 years. It's quite a fascinating exhibit. However, all I can really say about it right now is: There is a lot of penis on display here.

Methinks perhaps DR Elmore did not take my MISPRIZE PARTY statements as a Happy Birthday wish, so I'll paraphrase Bonnie & Clyde the movie to say--you're young, you're in love and you kill people.  Happy Birthday.  ;)

Um... No. I was actually looking at a photograph that was framed in a frame of "self-lubricating plastic". Then I came across a large-scale sculpture made of the same material. The aforementioned penises were done in acrylics and collage.

The material is abrasion resistent, so the frame would be less likely to scratch.

I will be seeing Equus this evening. The line at TKTS was rather long. I joined the line at 2pm. They don't begin selling tickets for the evening until 3pm so I was in for an hour long wait but it went quickly as I listened to two girlfriends tell stories about growing up as they stood with their gay couple friend (who had been together 13 years as they told their girlfriends). Once the line begin moving it went very quickly and I was out of line by 3:10. This was the full line and not the Play Only line. If I had been on the Play Only line I probably would have been out by 3:05. That's 5 minutes of my life I'll never get back  ;)

The Vixter was complaining about her toe hurting after socer practice andit looked a bit pink but we figured se just kicked a ball wrong.. the next day it was red and swollen  so yesterday we took the toe (still attached to the rest of the girl) off to the doctor for a looksee

OH! Dr Kathy said, that's a nasty infection take these here anitbiotics and soak it in epson salts

and if a red line starts to strecth up from the toe  go immediately to the ER

(I of course had dreams allnight about  doctors wanting to remoe the Vixter's leg... I must stop watching those HOUSE reruns before bed)

after 4 pills and numerous soaks the toe is looking much better and she can walk on it without pain

Hopefully Mr. Pearl will get here on time and we can be on the road by four.  Apparently, there's a mall very close to where we're seeing the reading, and at said mall there is a P.F. Chang's and a Cheesecake Factory.  However, since we won't be getting there until between five-thirty and six (depending on traffic), those places will be too crowded.  Then there's supposed to be a few other restaurants if one turns the opposite way from the theater - I think those are the ones we'll check out.

As is so common these days, we have a salad bar at the store.  It's a good thing we're a supermarket, and not a tire store - the combination of lettuce and veggies and the smell of rubber just does not mix.

Do you mean the kind of salad bar you'd find at a restaurant?

Is that common in the US? I've never seen a grocery store with a salad bar.

But also DR Ginny's mention of a garbage disposal made me wonder if they are common in other parts of canada. Because i've never seen one here.

You have never seen a garbage disposal?

Salad bars in grocery stores used to be very popular on the West Coast, but they have all but disappeared from stores in this area.  I can think of only one store locally that still has one; but it would probably be cheaper to go to an expensive restaurant for dinner, than to stock up on salad at this salad bar.

We have grocery stores here that have prepared food behind a counter (that look like what you might see at a deli). You can buy things like macaroni salad. Or chicken dishes. But i would not consider this a salad bar. Is this similar to what you mean? Or are you talking a real salad bar where you have a bowl of lettuce and stuff.

DR Jennifer, I believe we have two markets here with salad bars; one the all natural co-op, and at the Market of Choice, a small chain of store located in Oregon.  I’ve seen other salad bars in markets around the country.  There were all rather much like a salad bar at a restaurant, including soup on the side.  The salad bars here have a large variety of fixings.  The deli counters we have sound basically like yours.

When we moved from Southern California to New Jersey we were startled to find no one had garbage disposals.  It was also our first experience with a septic tank.  Do you have a septic tank?  The second home we had with a septic did have a garbage disposal but we were told to use it sparingly.  Our current home has a septic, and a disposal we use all the time.  Our other 6 homes all had garbage disposals as well as our apartments and our small, one bedroom, rental home.

DR Jennifer - I remember "fix it youself salad bars" popping up in Safeway stores when I was about ten years old. -Wow! That's thirty years ago?!?! It certainly was quite the novelty when they started appearing in supermarkets, and was usually a cause for some expressions of disbelief once we got to the register since they were priced by the pound. -"You bought how much salad?!?!?!". -And then when the hot food bars started popping up...

Here in NYC, salad and hot food bars in stores are more the norm than the exception. It just depends on the size of the store. The Whole Foods/Fresh Fields/Wild Oats stores usually have multiple bars: basic salad fixings, premade salads, international selections (Indian, Asian, etc.), desserts. And those are alongside the sushi, grilled items, pizza and home-cooked stations.  Some stores even have a Pommes Frites bar, a cooked to order Seafood counter, and an in-store smoker for BBQ'd selections. In other words: Yes, we have salad bars.

Okay, let's get serious, salad-wise, with BK's favorites:

Agree with Druxy about the Brown Derby cobb salad - never bettered.  That said, pre-diet, I loved a good cobb salad - my problem is that I only like ranch or, if it's really good, 1000 Island dressing, and I use way too much of it.

For a simple dinner salad I like Musso and Frank's simple dinner salad with their excellent vinaigrette dressing.

I also, as most of you know, love their Combination Louis - crab, shrimp, and lobster.  Again, the 1000 Island dressing is very caloric, but it's the ONLY thing that's caloric in that salad, and even in the old days when I used to put a bowl of it on the salad I never gained weight.  These days, however, I use both 1000 Island (in very small doses) and their red cocktail sauce, which is excellent.

I'm now very fond of Amy's Salad from Stanley's - avocado, chicken, butter lettuce, cashew nuts and grapefruit slices - in their soy dressing.  Their Chinese chicken salad is also the best in town.  They also do a nice Caesar Salad.  Which brings me to:

Best Caesar salad in town: Dan Tana's - made at the table, as it should be.

Little Toni's does an excellent antipasto salad, filled with all sorts of fun things.  Their Eyetalian dressing is very good.

And then there is cousin Dee Dee's unbelievably great salad - a light 1000 Island dressing of her own making, and then filled with good lettuce, veggies, jicama, and it's just perfection.  Unfortunately, she doesn't make it very often - last time I had it was about fifteen years ago, I think.  Which brings me to:

My mother's 1000 Island dressing - never bettered.

No septic tank, no garbarge dispossal.

Actually i was curious if other places in canada had garbage disposals. So i did a search. And one chain that carries them only has 2 locations (ontario and calgary alberta). So i suppose there are some people that have them.

Here i have not seen them. We just throw the garbage in the actual garbage.

Part of it is probably because we dont' have any of the same grocery store chains here. Here we have Maxi, Loblaws, IGA, Super C and Metro. I'm not even sure if they have these same chains across canada.  The IGA right near me has the premade salad/deli type bar with tons of choices. You could certainly eat well there. But no salad bar like you guys describe.

Is it expensive to buy your salad this way?

Those salads sound good. What is butter lettuce?

I haven't really had that many salads at restaurants other than house salads.

I have however been eating salad every day since i've been trying to lose weight.

Usually i just use one of those $1 bag of lettuces you buy at the grocery store and add feta and tomatoes. And I make my own homemade dressing (with light mayo, olive oil, parmesean cheese, garlic, feta, parsley, vinegar, paprika). I can't even stand bottled dressings anymore.

The salad bars can be on the pricey side.  I rarely get them unless we are traveling, and you have to watch they are fresh.  When I did bring home fixings from them I would use my own lettuce & just get the more expensive items (same price by the pound) I didn't have at home or I was too lazy to chop up.

*  Her potato salad is incredible

* I make used to make a great shrimp and macaroni salad, but I seldom make it anymore.

So... On the train ride back uptown, there was a (nice looking) gentleman sorting through a bag of athletic equipment.  At first I - and some other people - thought he had pulled out a bag of athletic supporters and was sorting them.  However, each strap seemed to have two jocks/cups attached to them.  Hmm...  Well, after some more observation and deduction, I realized that they were caps that water polo players wear.  The (small) cups were the ear protectors.  However, the look on the face of the woman sitting next to him... DR Jennifer - Well, we do have IGA stores here, but they're not called IGA - at least not in my travels - but I do know that IGA is a presence stateside.

I'm guessing that the Food Service and Safety rules/laws in Canada may be the reason that salad bars do not exist on your side of the border.

As for it being expensive... Well, if you happen to load up on a lot of heavy, dense food, it can get pricey.  Most food bars here run around $6.00-8.00/pound.  However, I have seen people load up their containers and not blink twice when they get to the cash register and hear that they have to fork over $15.00 or more to pay for their salad.

*At Whole Foods, I've seen couples and other small groups of people buy one of the clamshell packs of lettuces from the produce section, and then select their toppings from the salad bar before heading to the in-store dining area.  I've done the same thing every now and then if I want to "stock up" on salad for the week.

Richard and I went out for some dinner, then to Kroger for a bit of shopping.  We didn't do the fill-up-the-fridge thing, because we're still a bit concerned about the whole grid crashing again.  Plus, as I just learned from my mother, we don't know how fresh the stuff in the stores is either.  We'll stock up gradually.

It has been interesting reading up on Tommy Kirk.  These are probably stories that I have read before, but I find that as I get older; stories I have read before, now seem practically brand new.

Walt Disney perosnally fired Tommy Kirk because he learned that he was gay.  The funny thing is that Disney then had to turn around and rehire him, because they needed him to star in the Merlin Jones sequel, THE MONKEY'S UNCLE.  I hope he made them pay him well for that movie.

When we used to have salad bars in most grocery stores in Washington, I used to buy them often, because it wasn't cost effective to buy all of the stuff to make one salad for myself.  Of course, I quickly learned what items you should and should not get from a salad bar when you are paing by the pound.  I love kidney beans in green salad, but I was paying over $2.00 for a couple of spoonfuls of kidney beans from the salad bar, when I could buy a whole can for 59 cents.

If any DRs would like a fascinating miniseries, I can recommend heartily this 4-disc set about the life of scandalous actress Lillie Langtry, which has an excellent cast. I'm on the 3rd disc and cannot wait till Netflix sends the 4th.  We're now up to her second American tour, and so far the count is:
   1 husband
2 lovers the Prince of Wales, Arthur Jones, Prince Leopold, Fred Gephard'
   3 one daughter by Leopold
4 friends with Sarah Bernhard, Oscar Wilde, James Whistler, etc.

Coming up: Lillian Russell, Diamond Jim Brady, Judge Roy Bean, American citizenship.

Francesca Annis is fantastic as Mrs Langtry, I might add, but so is everyone else.

I was able to watch six episodes of CSI: NY, my next review set. CSI: NY is now the only one of the three CSI shows which I will be watching this season. Who would have ever dreamed that it would turn out to be my favorite of the three? For me, CSI has become dull and CSI: MIAMI over-the-top ridiculous.

CSI: NY is the only one which has consistently come up with interesting stories and let its cast do its work without being encumbered with personal life interferences. They do touch on their personal lives, but it doesn't become the focus of the show, at least, it hasn't yet.

I just got back from Equus. It's still a very compelling play some 35 years later. It's very well done and Daniel Radcliffe does an excellent job. It's well directed and well acted although the only person I didn't care for is Kate Mulgrew. I've seen her in other things and enjoyed her performances but she does such a bad accent that it sounds like something from First Year acting class (IMHO). The set is also not much to speak of. It's all greys and blacks with four large boxes which are used by the actors for various scenes. There are also grates for smoke effects and stall doors for the horses. They do the same thing with the horses that they did in the original with wire mesh masks and large wire devices for hooves.

All in all an excellent production. It was very intense and sexual and left me with the same sense of wonder as the first time I saw it.

And now, to bed.

I'm back from the reading of the new musical, which was, in a word, inept and horrid (two words).  We did end up eating at The Cheesecake Factory and it was great - this week's one and only splurge meal and it wasn't too bad - Barry and I split a small Caesar salad (although I had two-thirds and he a third - I was full already just from that) - then I had the farfalle with chicken, sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms in a very light cream sauce.  It wasn't as huge as it usually is - probably six ounces of pasta, and boy did it do the trick.  And I did eat it all up.  But, no dessert, and no other meals today, and the long jog probably means I'm okay.
