Topic of the Day: A few months ago, I was flipping through channels late one night and came across a movie with Gena Rowlands, Ben Gazzara and Joan Blondell (among others) called Opening Night (http://www.amazon.com/Opening-Night-Joan-Blondell/dp/B00000I1L2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1222156667&sr=1-1). I don't know what happened in the first half of the movie, but the second half was very good and quite dramatic. It has something to do with Gena Rowlands starring in a new play on Broadway but she's an alcoholic and can't quite get through it all...but she does (I guess) and is a triumph in the play. I added it to my Netflix queue. It's full frame, but if that's the only available version, then that's what I'll watch. :)
-
Also, I played Tim Allgood in a local production of "Noises Off." That was a blast!
-
TOD: William Goldman's book, The Season, where he took one Broadway season and examined each production that opened. The Broadway he wrote about doesn't exist anymore, but it was still a fascinating glance.
-
Several books about the gossip and the dirt that went on behind the scenes of No No Nanette. Fiddler on the Roof and James Kirkwood's memoir about his play Legends, Mary Martin & Carol Channing called Diary of a Mad Playwright: Perilous Adventures on the Road with Mary Martin and Carol Channing.
It was originally called Diary of a Mad Playwright: Perilous Adventures on the Road with Mary Martin and Carol Channing AND HOW I LIVED TO TELL ABOUT IT. Well he didn't. He died before the book was released.
-
Morning all. The reception last night was very nice. I've never been in the Rubin Museum (http://www.rmanyc.org/index.xml?context=/) before. It used to be Barney's and then it sat vacant for a long time and then it became Tom Hank's bookstore in You've Got Mail and then it became the Rubin. They have a separate admission for "neighborhood residents" (those in the 10011 and 10001 Zip Codes) which is nice plus they have a "Free Friday Evening" policy like the Metroplitan.
Tonight I'm seeing 13 (http://www.13themusical.com/) the new musical where everyone in the cast and the orchestra is a teenager. It could be wonderfully exciting or it could be one of those experiences you remember for a long time. I haven't heard much buzz about it but I'm going with an open mind. I do like some of Jason Robert Brown's stuff so it's not an unknown quantity.
And now back to the Otto Bremer Foundation.

BOOK-
ACT ONE by MOSS HART
-
Regarding THE SEASON, I found the anti-Pinter and also the homophobic aspects a little hard to take, as if to say, if you (Goldman) feel that strongly about these things, what can i really learn from your opinions in the overall analysis? but as long as the book is read from the persepcive of when it was written 40 years or so ago, it remains a valuable document with respect to the facts, just a little scary that someone like Goldman could have been so intolerant.
-
I liked THE SEASON for the reasons mentioned, but DR FJL certainly has a point as well.
I also liked ACT ONE by Moss Hart. There are a few others.
-

It could be wonderfully exciting or it could be one of those experiences you remember for a long time.
Or both! :-\
I know one of the young cast members, so will be curious to hear your reaction.
-
DR FJL - It has been many, many, many [that's THREE "manys"!] years since I read it, and that didn't stick with me particularly at the time, although I am sure your concerns are more than warranted.
-
Then there are the musicals that are set in and around backstage:
Funny Girl
Curtains
Birds of Paradise
Such Good Friends [television]
My Favorite Year [television]
and probably dozens more that escape me at the moment...
And also the movies:

DR singdaw reminded me of several things, although I would quibble that A STAR IS BORN and SINGIN' IN THE RAIN are about theatre; they're about the film world. I know, same difference. And the very welcome Dan(the Man) reminded me that I'd forgotten the great SLINF & ARROW series, so I'll add:

DR Cillaliz what did you think of DANCING WITH THE STARS?
I'm not sure who i love yet. But i thought brooke burke from Rock Star INXS was great (and i like david hough). I love rocco and karina. And julianne and little cody.
I thought cloris leachman was hilarious. And i thought toni braxton was really good.
I tend to like people though based on the celeb dancers!
I thought lacey did pretty good (with lance bass). I'll bet she has a lot of fans of her own (she was on So You Think You Can Dance as a contestant).

As for the Topic of the Day...
In addition to those already listed...
The one book that comes to my mind is Barbara Isenberg's "Making It Big: The Diary of a Broadway Musical".
As for movies: "The Dresser"
As for plays: Richard Nelson's "Two Shakespearean Actors"
-
Today I'll be working on THE FOOT FIST WAY and its bonus features. I'm hoping I can get the entire DVD watched this afternoon leaving tonight for some fun viewing. We'll see.
-
Favorite movies about "the theatre"?
Having spent a fair share of time on stage during my younger (high school & college) years, I really enjoy movies in which something goes wrong on stage and the actors have to improvise...sometimes very badly.
The movie version of ENTER LAUGHING may have other problems, but the scenes in which Reni Santoni continually screws-up during rehearsal and performance are hysterical. It's LOL time whenever I see these scenes.

Do people still name their daughters "Ruby"?
-
I wonder if anyone names their sons "Horace" or "Herbert" when no family connection is involved?
-
My last post reminded me of my favorite on-stage "screw-up" that I witnessed.
It was about 25 years ago, a production of THE DESPERATE HOURS, presented at a 99-seat theater on Hollywood's Santa Monica Blvd.
Perhaps you remember the William Wyler-directed movie with Humphrey Bogart and Fredric March? It's about a group of escaped convicts, led by Bogart, who invade March's home and hold he and his family hostage.
In the production I saw, actor Don Dubbins [TRIBUTE TO A BAD MAN, etc.] played the March role.
Near the end of the play, the police surround the house and one of the convicts rushes out of the place, leaving his gun. The March character retrieves the weapon, then goes upstairs to face the Bogart character, who is using March's young son as a shield. What Bogart doesn't know is that his gun is unloaded, but March's is.
On this particular night, the actor playing one of the convicts neglected to leave his gun on stage. Therefore, after desperately looking around for it, poor Don Dubbins (in the March role) had to face the Bogart character and "ask him nicely" to let the boy go.
Knowing the play quite well, I can't tell you how sorry I felt for those two actors, trying to ad-lib their way through the scene without breaking character.
-
Sometimes...for amusement...I consider the possibility that some people change their names when they are legally able to do so.
I have come to this conclusion because I've never known any kid who was named "Todd", but all of the adult men I've known who are named "Todd" are gay.
Of course, this cannot be absolutely the case.

I love stories about on-stage "screw-ups".
When I was a kid, I remember hearing late character actor Fred Clark relate one on a television interview show.
Clark was doing a play called BLIND ALLEY in summer stock. He was playing a psychiatrist and, at one point on-stage he went totally blank.
Clark saw that the prompter was on the other side of the stage, so hoping to get a cue to get him back on track, he ad-libbed his way over to where she was sitting in the wings.
He cocked his ear in her direction, but all he heard was: "No, that's not right. That's not the right line."
:-\
-
Nancy Kovack was gorgeous in anything, but she was kind of like Julie Newmar-- they were just to much to take in.
Carl Reiner is brilliant in many ways, but all of his movies come of as lengthy sit-coms and somehow cheap.

Very nice anecdote, Druxy. It's always fun to see what people will do in such a situation.
I was in a production of "10 Little Indians" back in 1976. During our final dress rehearsal, William Blore -- who had quite a number of lines meant to analyze all the death that had surrounded us -- was serving up a plate of food to both Philip Lombard (me) and Vera Claythorne. At one point, as he sat down on a couch to join us as we ate, he jumped several pages ahead of himself and then realized he wasn't where he was supposed to be on stage. He looked at me rather puzzled. I gently gave him an earlier line. He stood up and reacted as if I had managed to get him back on track. He went to a table and started dishing up food again. He had only his plate and turned to look at us as if to say, "What in blazes?" What came out of his mouth, was, "Seconds?"
We all dissolved into laughter. The performances went on without a hitch.
-
Alet and Andy Taylor certainly did - their second child is named Ruby.
That's kind of sweet. My grandmother (maternal) was named Ruby, and I also had an older cousin named Ruby. Apart from them, though, I've never encountered any other Rubys.
It's nice to know that names do come back into fashion after a time.

I love stories about on-stage "screw-ups".
...
DR Elmore and I were in a community theater production of Auntie Mame that was a screw-up from start to finish. In the scene where Mame entertains the Upsons, the flaming drinks got out of hand and we almost burned down the set. As the maid crossed behind the sofa, Mr. Upson casually turned to her and said, "Nora, would you take this please?" and set his Goblet of Fire on her tray. She exited stage-right and made it look like part of the script.

When Mr Mordden dies, the words ungrateful and motherf***er will be removed from the dictionary.

For those who might be interested in CBS' THE MENTALIST but have conflicts with other shows, CBS is rebroadcasting the season premiere on Friday night in the GHOST WHISPERER slot (8 p.m.) Just a heads up on that.
I would have liked to watch it. But i'll have a conflict every week. And i can't watch cbs online.
The show sounds a lot to me like PSYCH.

I was really looking forward to the premiere. And while i really liked parts, i was left slightly disappointed. There were a bunch of things that i did not like, especially the sylar/claire stuff. And not too thrilled about what mohinder did. And i don't really want to see maya again. And i did not like matt in africa.
I did find the whole identity of the shooter and the future peter coming back stuff quite interesting. And i'm not sure how i feel about so many characters that were dead coming back to life. I mean there were some i love who came back. But to me when you make a big deal last season about x number of people dying ... and then they are back in the first episode. Well it seems sort of odd.
The show always has so much going on. I was surprised to see Claire's dad in a cell. I love mama petrelli. I did really enjoy the hiro/ando stuff. Hiro is the best hero and so funny and cute!
It was sort of weird to me that they did not show micah or his cousin again or niki. i'd like to find out what happened there. Tracy is interesting.

I must be honest and admit that I've never heard of Percy Dovetonsils.

Now here's an odd one. I'd heard of Percy before. Der B had not.

Back from the long jog and I had to package up several orders, which I'll ship later this afternoon.

Percy Dovetonsils was a great reason to watch The Ernie Kovacs Show.....
Well I am now in SAFE MODE because yes I have been attacked again, and I will NOT spend more money on this VY-RUSS....

Looks like XANADU had decided to close down two weeks early, according to Playbill

In addition to the films mentioned, there is a film with Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman and Georgina Cates about a theatre group in 1947 Liverpool and a season of their plays. Georgina is fascinated by theatre and is thrown into the production grind and learns all about herself....and others. Very charming period film, with some spot on performances by the cast. Peter Firth and Rita Tushingham are also in the cast.....

The Benjamin Kritzer books have some nice backstage anecdotes.
One of my favorite theatre plays is Moss Hart's Light Up the Sky!
"I know it takes place after the apocalypse, darling, but do all of my clothes have to be so dreary?"
"I had the most amazing dream last night. I came onstage in a beautiful gown and just started talking, saying all of my lines, and all of everybody's lines. I just couldn't stop talking."
"That Freud was a great doctor wasn't he?"
And of course from the film version of KID MILLIONS:
Louie the Lug (warren Hymer) reading the paper: Hey you remember that guy that pretended to be your husband in Atlantic City?
Dot Clark (Ethel Merman): Yea.
Louie: Well, he's dead.
Dot: I coulda told ya that in Atlantic City.

Jrand, I went Mac about five years ago and it was the best change ever. You will be SO happy, and the little macbooks are very nice and not that expensive. You will never look at a PC again without wanting to vomit on the ground.
-
I watched another episode of THE OFFICE while I was eating lunch. It was a half hour episode (22 minutes), so it was over quickly, and then I watched the deleted scenes, always a treat.
-
My guess is that one of the reasons Xanadu is closing early is because title of show decided to close the same day as they were. Also, I think both shows are not even doing the piss-poor numbers that are being reported. I think it's much worse than that, with a ton of freebies being given out for every performance.
-
Then I watched today's review disc: THE FOOT FIST WAY. On the cover of this DVD case, there are rave reviews from The New York Times (Nathan Lee) and Rolling Stone (Peter Travers). What drugs must these two men have been on to have found a frame of this junk funny? It's mostly improved dialog and the lamest nothing story. I really found it such a waste of time.
And it made that awful Mike Myers film THE LOVE GURU that I watched last week seem like SOME LIKE IT HOT in comparison.
-
DR JRand - So, what exactly did they fix when your computer was in the shop?
*And at least you have an Apple Store in that mall in north Indy where you can try them out, and ask the Mac Geniuses a lot of questions. -And they may even be able to help you transfer the uninfected files from your PC to your new Mac.
-
Of course there was a commentary track so I had to sit through the movie again (thankfully, it's not long). There were also some deleted scenes and 2 minutes of bloopers.
Again, all awful!
-
Next, I watched the GREY'S ANATOMY episode that featured the gay soldiers. It's one of the most moving episodes of season four, and I really enjoyed revisiting it.
-
Next, I decided I'd start Kenneth Branagh's film of SLEUTH. I only got about 20 minutes in, but it's oppressive: that heavy, sterile set and the droning music. There's no lightness or sense of fun found in the original film (perhaps Harold Pinter writing the script decided to take all of the playfulness out of it.) I'll finish it since I'm curious to see how they pull off the plot tricks, but I can see why this sank without much of a trace.
-
And I scanned through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Yes, Luke was there fairly briefly with Wheatley also in attendance, but it's a set-up for a fund raiser happening later (I guess later this week). Nothing in the previews for tomorrow.
-
Hmmm... I wonder if it would be gilding the lily to serve the Coffe and Donuts Frozen Custard affogatto style? Hmmm...

LOL.....I think that will be the case MR BK.....I really do.
DR JOSE - both times and WIPED out everything except my operating system. I then had to RELOAD everything. The only thing the guy could tell me is that the virus was coming in through Outlook Express and that I didn't have to open or click on anything, it just hooked itself to my system.....he said.
-
Did anyone watch WORST WEEK last night? I did, because the critics tld me it was the best new comedy. I should have watched the rerun of THE CLOSER.
-
DR ARNOLDBROCKMAN - I couldn't agree with you more about Mr Ernie Kovacs.
Just the other evening I watched one of his films SAIL A CROOKED SHIP, which I had kind of avoided all of these years....and it was actually quite funny. Robert Wagner, Dolores Hart, and Carolyn Jones were terrific.....I was really surprised that Wagner was such a skilled physical comedian....though some of his worked was obviously doubled.....
I also liked Kovacs in NORTH TO ALASKA, BELL BOOK AND CANDLE, IT HAPPENED TO JANE, and STRANGERS WHEN WE MEET.
A completely unique talent.

Didn't know that Dept. Kovacs was going to play the part that Sid Caesar eventually played in ITS A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD....with his real life wife Edie Adams playing his movie wife.....Adams did play Caesar's wife in the movie.
I think I might have liked it even more with EEK that with Mr SC, whose comedy I never really "got."

I will need to get a new computer fairly soon. I'm going to stick with a PC, though. ;) I use Windows 2000 at home. Using Vista at work is fine, but there are several programs that I have at home that I don't know if I can get for Vista. My work computer does not have Microsoft Photo Editor and I use that constantly at home...and I know how to use it. I don't want some program that will take forever to learn, just because Vista doesn't support Photo Editor. Assuming that the photo editor program that we have at work is the next generation of MS Photo Editor, it can't do a couple of very simple things, and that's frustrating. I can do them in MS Paint, but it's more cumbersome and it's another program that I would have to use, in addition to the photo editor that is in Vista. :-\

For drains, the baking soda / vinegar treatment, followed after a short wait by some boiling water, works pretty well, too.
Been there done that. It does work....unless your drain is full of gooey black sludge that has clogged it very badly and needs to be roto rootered. It was very gross and disgusting.
-
Sometimes...for amusement...I consider the possibility that some people change their names when they are legally able to do so.
I have come to this conclusion because I've never known any kid who was named "Todd", but all of the adult men I've known who are named "Todd" are gay.
Of course, this cannot be absolutely the case.
There were 3 or 4 boys named Todd in my class when I was growing up. I don't know if they are gay, but I do know they were always called Todd

What?!!! Clay Aiken's Gay?! Who knew?!!!
-
I need to get dinner on the table before Eureka hits the airwaves.
Enjoy. Hasta.
-
Oh, Charles, there is a world of difference between "Oh, of course I knew he (or she) is gay" and "Yes, I am gay." The latter still takes courage, even now. The former takes no courage at all.
-
No WONDER Lindsay Lohan wouldn't return my affections. Damn.

I ate at La La's and worked on the LACCTAA newsletter - I'll see the new version tomorrow and I'm hoping we can put that to bed and get it printed. I must say, I had the first bum meal ever at La La's - I had the double chicken breast and it was just yucky - don't even know why, although the carmelized onions weren't really done correctly - I don't know, it just wasn't very good. The salad was fine, as always.
-
Another day with no mail or packages.
-
Since I did the long jog and the lunch was only chicken with garlic and onions (very calorie and fat-friendly), I may get some sort of dessert for tonight to take this foul and fowl taste out of my mouth. Perhaps some gummy peaches, or licorice or something fat-free like that that's only around 200 calories.

What?!!! Clay Aiken's Gay?! Who knew?!!!
Everyone but Clay. For a long long time.

DR Jennifer, I enjoyed Dancing With the Stars, as always. I think I'm more traditional than you . I didn't enjoy Lacey the kid from NSYNC. My mom thought Cloris Leachman was drunk. I don't know, but she was way over the top and went past funny for me. I was really surprised by Warren Sapp. I liked Toni Braxton, Misty May-Tranor, Maurice Green and a couple others. Don't have a favorite yet and I think seeing them all dance the other style tonight...well all but one couple will be good.
I don't choose by the professional. I look at the star. How good they are in the beginning, how they improve etc.
-
I totally zoned that I have to go to a reading of a play tonight, by Sam Bobrick. It's in Encino, so shouldn't take that long to get there. Had I remembered, I wouldn't have eaten lunch, because there's food being served. Hopefully there will be some sort of dessert that's not too calorie-unfriendly. Reading is at seven, and hopefully won't be more than two hours.

Someday perhaps a great TOD would be: what music [if any] do you listen to when you excercise?
When you do what?

-
Thanks, Cilla - I'll go read it.
-
I never knew him.
I have known some men who slept with people's sisters who turned out to be gay, though.
Considering the things that Woody has said about his sister, it might have turned Todd gay!

I don't think you have anything to worry about. ;)

And now, I must be off. I'm going to my sister's for a while. When I eventually get home, I'm going to watch last night's CBS comedies...except for "Two and a Half Men." It doesn't seem to interest me, anymore. Oh, well.
-
Didn't know that Dept. Kovacs was going to play the part that Sid Caesar eventually played in ITS A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD....with his real life wife Edie Adams playing his movie wife.....Adams did play Caesar's wife in the movie.

Please forgive my blasphemy, but Mr. Kovacs could only have improved that film.
-
Only God can make a twee.
-
No WONDER Lindsay Lohan wouldn't return my affections. Damn.
What about Clay?
-
On the reverse side of the coin for the TOD, a couple of films that I saw on television that I thought were exactly what theatre was LIKE turned out to be the documentaries I thought they were....of course, I was a mere child when I first saw them.
STAGE DOOR......Andrea Leeds is really a pretty bad actress....with a couple of good moments.....
STAGE STRUCK .... Susan Strasberg is surprisingly bad playing someone she obviously couldn't identify with, a young struggling actress....although the New York locations were very nice....and Charlotte Greenwood was so terribly "actressy" - I hadn't liked her in MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, so she had a lot of baggage for me.....I hadn't seen her yet in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST.....
-
Maybe I will watch STARGATE the movie tonight, I haven't seen it.
And after all, I am in SAFE mode.

Many many many many thanks to BK, Cilla, singdaw and TCB!

There are certain pros that i love (like julianne hough and karina). So i sometimes root for them.
See i thought misty may was okay. But she's not my cup of tea. Same with maurice greene. I'm not crazy about cheryl. And his personality is not for me. I thought toni braxton was very good (but i doubt i'll root for her). And i do agree that warren sapp impressed me a lot (although i doubt i will root for him).

How about "Clay Aiken? Who?"

I had a full evening of viewing tonight. And I would have gotten more watched if I hadn't gotten a very lengthy phone call.

I began by watching the rest of SLEUTH. Pinter certainly changed the third act! And the second act was made much less effective by the choices for wardrobe and makeup.
Nope, nothing here that I'd ever want to see again.
-
Next, I opened my next review set - FRIDAY THE 13TH - THE SERIES, and watched the first episode. It's an anthology show that really has nothing to do with the slasher film series. It's about an antique shop with cursed objects that the new owners are trying to retrieve before they cause more deaths.
The first episode dealt with an enchanted doll who caused death. Sound familiar? Of course it does! It's just a one hour rehash of "Living Doll" from THE TWILIGHT ZONE.
-
Next I watched tonight's season premiere of NCIS. My goodness, they certainly didn't waste much time getting the team back together.
And I'm sorry to say that the last minute revelation I could see coming from a mile away. I guess this will be a long running story arc this season.
-
Friends are like butt cheeks...
Crap might separate them,
But they always come back together.
Oh, dear DR TCB...
You shouldn't have!
:)
-
Next I watched tonight's FRINGE. Just an OK episode even though I did enjoy seeing David Lansbury and Peter Hermann as guest stars.
I'll watch this one more week and then drop it if the show doesn't hook me more.
-
I too watched THE WORST WEEK. The previews looked like it would be a very funny show...and it could have been...but it just didn't quite work and it seemes like it was a show that was full of itself, if that makes sense...and when the scene with the goose in the kitchen happened...well, I turned it off after that, that was just too much.
-
I ended my evening going back to FRIDAY THE 13TH and watching another episode (there are 26 in the set, so I've got a LONG way to go with this one.)
This episode had to do with a sacred pen that could cause death if the person's name was inscribed in a book using the pen. There were a couple of grisly deaths in the show though not much is actually shown, of course.
-
So, what was in the lasagna?
-
So, what was in the lasagna?
Guilt and remorse.
-
Heading down now to go to bed.
Good night!
-
To be a true Yom Kippur lasagna, wouldn't it need to be layered with Chinese food?
-
Or perhaps with kippers

I too watched THE WORST WEEK. The previews looked like it would be a very funny show...and it could have been...but it just didn't quite work and it seemes like it was a show that was full of itself, if that makes sense...and when the scene with the goose in the kitchen happened...well, I turned it off after that, that was just too much.
Well, that's another British show who's American transplantation didn't seem to have took. -Or something to that effect.

DR MattH - I remember making sure to stay up late to catch "Friday the 13th" series. And it also hopped channels every now and then since it was a syndicated show. Of course, I just kept waiting - well, hoping - for episodes where the young male lead would appear shirtless, but even though he hardly ever did I still liked the show. ;D

Back from the play reading, which was fun, and about which more later. Must try to sit on my couch like so much fish for at least a few minutes.
