Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a profoundly profound filled with profundity opening sentence, and now it is time for you to post until the profoundly profound cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: NUMISMATICS!
-
I have a few to loan.....
-
Good early morn one and all...
Sorry I have been scarce but I have had problems as of late trying to load this and other sites... Not sure what is up...
-
I have also been busy dealing with a bunch of nasty sidewinders and evil doers at work...
-
I gotta tell you.
-
I have begun a thread over on the film score monthly board about the new Kritzerland limited edition release, to be announced at an undisclosed time on an undisclosed date. You dear readers, of course, will know before anyone and you'll have a chance to get your orders in before anyone. It's a goodie, that's all I'll stay, and the composer is one of the great film composers and I'm quite sure would be in many people's pantheon of great film composers.

~~~Vibes for No Annoyances for BK!!~~~
Yesterday, Charles Pogue wrote:
What?!!! Clay Aiken's Gay?! Who knew?!!!
And I wrote:
Actually, that should be "What?!!! Clay Aiken's Gay?! Who cares?"
Then, TCB wrote:
George! You surprise me. That was rather cruel.
I started to write a response yesterday, but I got locked out of the day and had to start over:
NO! I didn't mean it that way! Really! :-[ What I meant by it was that there was so much speculation for so long, that now that he's finally admitting that he really is gay, it just seemed inevitable...it's not much of a surprise. I truly think that it's a brave thing for him to do, especially since he's specifically been denying it for so long, but that it's not really a big deal because of all the speculating.
-
And now, I'm off to bed.
-
DR George - I understood what you meant.
Sweet dreams! :)
-
The lasagna was just a normal meat lasagna, so far as I can tell!
What is the singular form of the word hamantaschen? There isn't one, 'cause you can't eat just one! :)
Perhaps the song clip would mean more to the master class participants after they have met and worked with Ms. Morrow for a while.
Perhaps.
-
At one point I had thought up some great "Ask bk" questions.
Guess I should have written them down at the time. :P
-
Were there any unoriginal members of the Firesign Theater?
I agree with DR SINGDAW.....I would play the track after the class but before the Q/A.
Wednesday, and now I am a waffle. If I buy an Apple computer, I will have to get a new printer and scanner and LightScribe external drive.....now I am on the fence again. Maybe I should have my computer repaired one more time and DON'T click on what I realized I now that I clicked on yesterday to start the problem.
13.
Well, it's like a rougher, earthier High School Musical. It's not bad. It's not aimed at me or most (if not all) people who post on this board. There is some talent on the stage. There is some talent that needs nurturing. It's got good energy, at least in the opening number, although the opening number had terrible sound problems and I lost lots of the lyrics, partially to sound issues and partially to screaming instead of singing. The sound was better as the evening went on. 13 year olds (even if you're a year or two past 13) should not be singing Wicked-type power ballads (again, it probably works if you're a teenager but for me it's like watching those child beauty paegants, it just makes me cringe). The music is definitely recognizable as Jason Robert Brown. I think he's written some wonderful stuff. I've never seen The Last Five Years but there are songs from that show which I really like. There isn't much in 13 that sticks with you.
I think the biggest question for me is why did they do this? Because they could populate an entire cast and 5 piece orchestra with teenagers? That's not reason enough to do a show. It doesn't break any new ground (aside from being a cast of teens). The plot is the same kind of Movie of the Week or Disney Channel film about a 13 year old plunked out of his comfort zone (New York City) and plopped down in Appleton, Indiana after his parents get divorced. He has to readjust to life in a small, Midwestern town. Every single character is a stereotype which could be OK but the characters never go beyond shallow stereotype. There is the cool guy, the mean girl, the hangers on, the dumb but good girl, the geek boy, the geek girl, etc. A plot point even turns (for a brief period) on, horror of horrors, a mistaken "gay" kiss in a dark movie theatre. I guess fagmo (faggot and homo?) is the new slur in middle school.
I'm just rambling here. I didn't dislike the show and if it's marketed correctly, it will have a life. But at $111 a ticket it will cost a family of 2 teens and a mom and dad $444 just to go to the theatre, that's not counting anything extra like coming in on the train or driving in and parking or having dinner. It's too bad that Off-Broadway has become financially unfeasable because the show would probably work better Off-Broadway and it would have a longer life. It's not even a show I can see and go "It's not aimed at me but I respect what they are doing and where they are trying to go." I felt that way about Rent and Spring Awakening but not about this. I don't go to Theatre Chat Boards (my tolerance for insipid rambling is limited to my own insipid rambling) so I don't know what "people on the street" are saying about this show and I haven't heard much from other more reliable sources but I don't think it has much life after opening. I doubt it will be trashed the way Glory Days was trashed but I can't imagine that even a silly old toad like Clive Barnes will like it. Who knows what Ben Brantley will think. I don't hold his reviews in the highest regard (even though many people dislike him, give me Frank Rich anytime).
It's 8:25 and I must get to work. I've spent almost 20 minutes trying to get this down and I cannot think of anything more to add.
I'm off to Greater New Orleans (the Community Foundation that is).
-
I don't think I am the audience for that show either.
Oh my.
Off to the bank and grocery shopping....which as a retired person, I can do early on a weekday morning.
-
Ben - Could you talk in some detail about the disabled character in the show? I hear that has potential to offend people. Or would that be a spoiler?
-
Thanks, DR Ben, as always. :)
You did a good job of cataloguing your ambivalence. From the general comments I have read, it's definitely a mixed reaction, perhaps leaning a bit toward the negative.
-
Interesting that BK should be seeing Sam Bobrick's latest play, since Norman is That You and Wally's Cafe had both just come up in the past few weeks on another prominent internet board.
I have very very fond memories of Wally's Cafe when it was in its Boston tryout. Perhaps I happened to have seen it with an audience that was totally with the show. I was shocked that it didn't succeed in NYC at least as a grand vehicle for its actors.
-
I love Wally's Cafe--we did it as a student production in college and I played Wally--one of my favorite roles.
-
QUESTION for BK: What do you think was the most shocking, surprising, head-scratching cancellation of a network TV series?
-
Last night I watched YENTL on TCM. I haven't seen it in years. Aside for a few minor laspes, I do think it's a wonderfully directed film with all three leads giving nice performances. It's so often the butt of so many jokes that I've forgotten how much I really do like it.
-
Ben - Could you talk in some detail about the disabled character in the show? I hear that has potential to offend people. Or would that be a spoiler?
I don't know that it would be a spoiler. I wasn't offened by the character at all. He's a horny kid with a degenerative neuromuscular disease. There is a Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy joke in one of the songs he sings. For me he turns out to be one of the better written characters. He knows who he is in the scheme of High School Angst and even though he gets knocked around a bit he can play the game to survive. Perhaps the offended might be offended by the overt manipulation he uses to get what he wants. He manipulates by playing off his disability and that, probably, does have the potential to offend someone.
One other thing that I didn't say in the initial post is they do capture the idea that everything in a teenager's life is "the absolutely worst thing that could ever, ever happen" until the next absolutely worst thing that could ever ever happen happens or it's the absolutely best thing that could ever every happen. The idea that the world revolves around them with extremes of happiness and sadness and how could/why did this happen to me or wow, my world is perfect now flow throughout the show.
I agree. I have quibbles about some things but overall, I think YENTL is excellent.
Let's move on (as Sondheim might have said).
Good morning, all! Today I see the matinee performance of A TALE OF TWO CITIES, so I think I will take my walk down to the theatre. Before then, laundry and mopping the bathroom.
I do believe another restoration job is on the way: Rodgers & Hart's 1920s show, SPRING IS HERE, and I look forward to it, since I love Rodgers & Hart. I had the good fortune yesterday to discover that there is a show scrapbook on LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 at the NYPL, and that will make like easier in working on that project. As to Toyland and the Slipper Lady, my favorite theatre librarian Jeremy is on leave for personal business until December, and I need his help with a scrapbook question concerning photos from Toyland. Meanwhile, I 'm dealing with searches on the scenery designers for Toyland. It would be nice to find some of the original set designs. We've discovered two original costume designs, one at the Museum of the city of New York and one at NYPL.
I think I'd have liked it better if they'd junked the songs and someone else directed it.
DR Ben, BABES IN ARMS and its success owed much to the calibre of talent in the show, which perhaps doesn't exist in young performers today, but it was blessed with a great score and George Balanchine. I've been reminding myself of this ever since the original production of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG because nobody wants to pay a fortune to see a high school play. And unless 13 is truly brilliant, and MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG was not, it won't last either.
All those kids in BABES IN ARMS had backgrounds in vaudeville and the stage, Mitzi Green had done films, while the cast of MERRILY looked like the graduating class of Horace Mann and were required to use acting chops playing old disillusioned characters they didn't possess. I hope Jason's cast is all playing their own age.
Wednesday morning greetings! Another day of going through files and wondering, "Why did I keep THIS?"
Yes, the cast is playing teens and they are absolutely in their teens. Someone playing 13 may be 14 or 15 but they are absolutely gangly (or short like me), oversexed, ambitious teens whose emotions fly from A-Z in the blink of an eye. While there are some real talents on the stage, some of them could use more training or experience or whatever. It's not a solid cast of powerhouse professionals. At times it does have an air of high school or college freshmen about it.
JR, if you have a firewall and good virus protection program, you should have no problems. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I find Macs counterintuitive and hard to figure out at times. I also have an HP that I got right when Vista came out (as chronicled here, DRs), and I have to say it's been one of the most trouble free computers I've ever had (which of course means the hard drive will crash now). ;)
-
My only problem with YENTL was that Barbra has ALL of the music. She's a marvelous singing actress, but spreading the wealth around might have made it seem something less than a vanity project.
-
When YENTL first came out a lot of people asked me if I was related to Mandy Patinkin. Hard to believe, but true. Now people ask me if I'm related to Michael McDonald. (Also true, easier to believe).
Good morning!
A very cool morning and it looks to be a beautiful early fall day. I hope we can have a month of this before it turns noticeably colder.
I'll be working on FRIDAY THE 13TH - The Series all day today unless something more notable (SLEEPING BEAUTY on Blu-ray; INDY JONES 4) arrives in the mail.
people ask me if I'm related to Michael McDonald.
At least they're not asking about Ronald. 8)
On TV Tonight:
more season premieres and new episodes:
CBS - two comedies, CRIMINAL MINDS, CSI: NY
NBC - KNIGHT RIDER, AMERICA'S GOT TALENT, LIPSTICK JUNGLE
ABC - DANCING WITH THE STARS
FOX - BONES, two comedies
-
And I also have last night's episode of THE SHIELD to watch while I cook and eat lunch.
You liked her kitsch-y direction? I'm still laughing over the scene where she opens the book and a billion watt lamp shines out of it onto her face. All shtetls should look so professionally designed.
Tonight I see A Tale of Two Cities. Mr. Moore will leave soon to amble downtown (for him it's downtown) to see it this afternoon.
Not to mention the hovels in the shtetls!
[not to be confused with Hodel]
Thanks for posting that review DR Ben!
On tv tonight:
Dancing With The STars results (although i'll probably record it and ff through a lot).
I did really enjoy the show. And they made it very riveting for the viewer at home. But i felt horrible for the contestants. Making them wait to find out who was eliminated till the end and not telling them who would dance next was just cruel.
A lot of my early favorites were left till the end (rocco, cody, and even though she wasn't very good susan lucci).
I think the right person totally went home. So that was good for a change.
I thought cloris leachman was very funny (i'm curious DR Cilla if you or your mom thought she was funny last night). I thought the Rock Star INXS lady was very good again (brooke). The football player was good for his size. I was so happy rocco did well ( i really like him and right now he one of the ones i am rooting for).
I'm not sure yet who my fav is. But the dancing was very enjoyable!
I wonder who will go home tonight. I actually thought last night it would be between 1)patch guy 2)kim 3) ted mcginley. I really have no idea how popular kim's reality show is. And i'm not sure if ted is very popular (but since he has a no name partner, i think that could hurt him).
Regarding the disabled character in 13, Fred, I just thought of something that might cause consternation among disabled performers. The role is played by a non-disabled actor. As I said earlier, I think he's one of the better people in the show. At curtain call and in the min-concert after the curtain call he appears without crutches and dances and runs around.
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I would have posted a couple of minutes, but was kept getting "too many connections".
A friend of mine is one of the "wranglers" for 13. That's all I'm sayin'. For now. ;)
-
I would have posted a couple of minutes
Well heavens sakes, man - if you have some left over, send them to me! ;)
I have a friend who is a wrangler for Billy Elliot. Unless something untoward happens he is looking toward a nice stretch of employment.
Shall We?
Welcome to Page 3
DR Ben - IIRC, a lot of the brouhaha was over the [over]use of the term "cripple" in the show, and how PC [or not] that was.
Shall We?
I think we shall, indeed. :D
DR JRand - Hmm... Oh... Well... Do you still have your original OS discs? If so, is buying a new hard drive an option? Although, if the virus is embedded within "Outlook Express" (which, frankly, sounds a little not-right to me - I'd call Microsoft to see if that's really possible, and how to fix it if it is), I guess it's more a matter of seeing if the virus is (still) in your backed-up software and files.
-
You liked her kitsch-y direction? I'm still laughing over the scene where she opens the book and a billion watt lamp shines out of it onto her face. All shtetls should look so professionally designed.
To be honest, I've seen the film once when I reviewed it way back when it first came out. I had the flu at the time and was not feeling well at all but was under a deadline. I remember mostly how long I found it to be (but that could have been due to my being sick) and the stolen boat scene right out of FUNNY GIRL.
So, I'm certainly NO expert on YENTL. I've never owned it on any video format though I did buy the soundtrack album on LP.
-
I have a friend who is a wrangler for Billy Elliot. Unless something untoward happens he is looking toward a nice stretch of employment.
Well, my friend ( ;) ) was originally hired just for the preview period, but it looks like they'll have to be keeping him on for the duration of the run. ;)
-
YENTL. I've never owned it on any video format
Well, the wait for a Region 1 DVD has been interminable.
I did get a UPS delivery this morning: a two disc compilation of Cartman episodes from SOUTH PARK. I'm sure I'll enjoy them, but the set doesn't come out until October 6, so I'm at least a week away from watching it.
-
Oh, now I understand. Yes, there are a couple of lines using that word. Obviously, it didn't bother me because I didn't remember it until you mentioned it. There are all sorts of little "offensive" things in the show, FagMo being one of them. I don't believe the use of the word will affect someone's enjoyment or non-enjoyment of the show.
-
I'm heading down now to check the USPS mail and then start on lunch.
I know about cattle wranglers and wranglers of other beasties, but what would a "wrangler" be doing in "Billy Elliot"?
Spoo! (?) I meant 13.
Oh-h-h [wink, wink] I see. A euphemism "friend." I guess he wrangles in his personal life, too!
Oh-h-h [wink, wink] I see. A euphemism "friend." I guess he wrangles in his personal life, too!
Hmm... He's a real friend, not a euphemism friend. I don't think he's ever "wrangled" in his personal life, but he may have worn a pair of Wrangler jeans at one point and time. However, he is currently one of the "kiddie wranglers" - a.k.a. "babysitters" - for 13.
-
Perhaps the offended might be offended by the overt manipulation he uses to get what he wants. He manipulates by playing off his disability and that, probably, does have the potential to offend someone.
Let's hope it doesn't. People of "all" persuasions use whatever they can to manipulate others. Manipulation can be something as minor as affecting hurt feelings or as major as using secret knowledge to coerce others into doing what one wants (i.e., blackmail).
People with extraordinary looks manipulate others at every turn every day of their lives. They get folks to say yes to things they'd refuse to do for average schmoes.
Anything that gets someone else's attention is duly noted and employed by people every day every where. It crosses all boundaries and age groups.
-
I get it. By saying "my friend ( ;))", you didn't really mean to lead us down the merry path?
QUESTION for BK: What do you think was the most shocking, surprising, head-scratching cancellation of a network TV series?
Two spring to mind, just because I really liked them - a late 1950s show called Panic, which was sort of Twilight Zoneish and Hitchcockish. I have managed to see some of the episodes that I'd remembered vividly - they're not that well made, but I like the stories. The other was a series called Way Out, which was hosted by Roald Dahl and which aired Friday nights on CBS just before The Twilight Zone. Both shows had, I think, one-season runs - Way Out maybe less.
-
I had a firewall and good virus protection on my Dell - didn't stop a virus from infecting it and ultimately causing the loss of the hard drive. It was the straw that broke the Kimmel's back, and I believe all the reasons for my switch to Mac are chronicled on this board. As to Macs being counterintuitive and hard to figure out, I found the exact opposite to be true. I could never figure out my PC - everything took two keystrokes or five keystrokes. When I got the Mac it was, in fact, so easy to figure out, that a brief tutorial with the fellow who set it up was all I ever needed. It's very friendly to people who aren't computer wise and when I've forgotten things or can't figure something out the answer is usually twenty seconds away.
I also find the extended warranty customer service to be the best anywhere.
October 6.....I know that's someone's birthday. ;D
I am listening to, for no particular reason, the OCR of HAIR. Just a fun bouncy quasi-rock score that joyfully performed by it's cast. I wonder if the revival is at least half as enjoyable or is it another A CHORUS LINE?
13 does little to intice me, but then, neither does a lot of B'way these days. This past year all I've seen was YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (a corporate freebie seat, but I did have fun), SOUTH PACIFIC (which I paid an arm and a leg for but glad that I did--I swooned several times) and AUGUST OSAGE AVENUE (a funny LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT which I perversely enjoyed.)
I do plan on getting up to see GYPSY, maybe EQUUS, maybe GOLD/BOUNCE/RAMBLIN' or whatever the hell they are calling it these days.
-
I think we shall, indeed. :D
The proper response was: "Let's!"
-
As to "13" I've heard it's awful. I heard it was awful here in LA, awful in its other tryout, and now awful in NY. It's blatantly designed to try to capture the demographic all B'way producers are trying to capture - the tweens and teens. B'way has, in fact, become all about that demographic and if they don't stop trying to emulate the motion picture industry, it really will be the end of B'way as those of us knew and loved it. Someone told me I had to go read the threads about this show on B'wayworld, which is, of course, populated by twelve to seventeen year olds - those are the ages of 90% of the people who post there and say things like "In all my years of theatergoing." I went and read for about two minutes and had to stop. Some of the children have already become "emotionally invested" in the show and have seen it several times (that's their term for "adopting" a show). A few of the older teens hated the show, but they are yelled at by the younger teens. It's all quite ridiculous. Will it succeed? Who knows anymore. The producers obviously have money and ego (they recorded the cast album before they started previews), so it probably won't close immediately if the reviews stink. If they get middling reviews, they'll probably do what all producers do - keep it open for a year and close at a complete loss of its entire investment, just like Xanadu, which is now closing two weeks early because the producers don't want to lose even MORE money. NOW they become fiscally responsible. Amazing.
AUGUST OSAGE AVENUE--I think we have a new "combo" title a la Brigadoonesbury (once every 100 years Elizabeth Swados writes a hit show, and this is it!).
Must I now be referred to as "Ronald Lee Pulliam"?
A cooler day expected today in Oakland...by about 10 degrees (F).
October is when we usually have the "dog days", but this year may be different.
-
I learned something interesting this morning.
Any time one of San Francisco's cable cars is involved in an accident, the car is retired to the garage for a complete going over.
This morning, a senior citizen ran across a street directly in the path of an oncoming cable car. "She" ran into the car, which was unable to brake to a stop to prevent her from running into it. The woman was not seriously harmed, but the car had to be retired to the garage for the day, and it had ramifications of impacting the morning commute for many riders who needed to find alternate means of transportation.
It's actually August: Osage County
Now stop bothering me, I have to go to work ;)
Remember I told y'all about the great job Richard, Rob, and Mary Linda did cleaning up the storm debris from our yard last week? Well, the power company sent their "tree guys" around to chop out part of a tree that was interferring with some wires and Richard is single-handedly dealing with the mess they made. Our neighbor had the nerve last night to hassle him about not getting the job done fast enough and about how some of the branches are on her property.
Tell Richard I said to go pee on the neighbor's porch.
It's actually August: Osage County
Lol--I keep confuzing the title with Osage Avenue here in Philly--the site of a police confrontation with a radical group called Move--at the height of which the city dropped a bomb on the surrounded rowhome which resulted in burning down the entire city block. Which is sort of what happens in AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY in a way...
Hmmm...
Do you need a Surf Butler (http://www.passportmagazine.com/tv/index.php?media=SurfButlers)?
*And the interviewer in the clip, Tom Mizer, is one of the writing partners of one of DR elmore's office mates, Curtis Moore.
-
My only problem with YENTL was that Barbra has ALL of the music. She's a marvelous singing actress, but spreading the wealth around might have made it seem something less than a vanity project.
I'd seen an interview with Mandy (who played Avigdor) about this and he said that Babs' concept was that all the singing was Yentl's thoughts. Mandy's response was, "Avigdor thinks."
And now...off to work. :)
Alright, I try to keep the level of conversation high here by chatting about the cinema and the theatre, but all you guys want to talk about is surf butt. I see some things haven't changed here...
So....
I just received a box from Amazon.com. It was for an order I placed on Sunday. Since my order totaled more than $25, and since I didn't really need what I ordered immediately (printer ink refills), I went ahead and requested their Free Super-Saver Shipping... That was a very fast "6-9 days" delivery period! :)
*And, I'm so glad I checked the prices on Amazon - via my iPhone - when I was shopping for printer inks a few weeks ago. At both Staples and Office Depot, I would have spent about $110. On Amazon, just $60! -Even the MSRPs on Amazon were lower than the ones at the stores. ?!?!?!
-
You sure are getting feisty as you're nearing your retirement, DR Ginny!
Well, maybe, DR Jose, but that's how I've felt about this neighbor for 20+ years. As soon as we moved into the house, she explained to Richard that the hill between her house and ours was on our property and she expected him to mow it.
I also suspect, elderly as she is, she has not been out and about much in the past week and a half to see just how much debris is still around. She probably thinks those branches are the only ones still not cleared away.
Richard has decided to t-a-k-e h-i-s t-i-m-e dealing with them.
Any Eli Stone fans out there? According to Playbill.com, Benanti Will Miss a Few Gypsy Performances to Film ABC's "Eli Stone." (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/121658.html)
There's also this paragraph:
Benanti, a show spokesperson confirmed, will not perform at the St. James Theatre Sept. 25-Sept. 28 and Oct. 14-18. In her absence standby [and close and personal friend to BK] Jessica Rush will likely play the role of wallflower Louise, who becomes famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee.
I was very angry when I chose last night's THE SHIELD from my DVR list. The audio was totally ruined, replaced with a super loud static. The next broadcast isn't coming on until tomorrow night, so I won't see it until Friday at the earliest.
I have never seen YENTL, so I can't comment on it, but the IDEA of YENTL didn't compel me to seek it out....and the casting of YENTL did compel me to avoid it.
Instead I watched last night's GENERAL HOSPITAL: NIGHT SHIFT off SoapNet. Chad Allen is making the first of a three episode story-arc as a love interest for the gay intern on the staff. They did have obvious chemistry together, and I'll look forward to the next two episodes. Chad's character needs a liver transplant, and since his arc is only three episodes, he's either not going to get it, or he'll get it and it won't take. Either way, they're missing what could be a great, long term relationship.
-
Then, I watched four more episodes of FRIDAY THE 13th series. The evil objects were a statuette of Cupid, a teacup which sent out strangling vines (reminded me immediately of THE RUINS), a Hallowe'en episode with an amulet that could bring the dead back to life, and a "coffin of blood" magic trick.
-
There was one bonus feature: a couple of promo ads announcing the beginning of the new series. Together, they didn't even run a minute.
And I completed my afternoon viewing by skimming through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing of note in show or previews.
Greetings, once again, from Madison Square Park... Where the "pass off" at Shake Shack seems to be a bit off today. If I wasn't sitting so far away, and if I still wasn't being careful about my left knee, I would have jumped, literally, for some of shakes and drinks they just gave out for free due to mis-fillings. Alas, they got my order - a Shack-ago Dog and a single dip of the Milk Chocolate Chunk Frozen Custard - correct. ;)
I really liked A TALE OF TWO CITIES in spite of its faults, which are mostly its lyrics. Since I think LES MIZ is a mess with maybe four good songs and a sloppy attempt at telling a story covering 20 years on a Lazy Susan set, I really liked how smoothly the plot ofTWO CITIES was laid out and how nicely it was staged. It's amazing how a wedding veil can show the passage of several years so easily.
While I don't think any of the songs in A TALE OF TWO CITIES is very good, and I think the too-often simplistic lyrics sometimes seem out of character for the singer, I liked the book, set design, and costumes very much. I also liked the cast quite a lot, especially James Barbour who's got a role anyone would kill for. The ingenue playing Lucie Manette redeems herself here after her god-awful turn as the Mermaid Siren on the idiotic soap opera PASSIONS. I liked her look, her bearing, and her lovely voice. Who woulda thought?
It's also got a great supporting cast, including my friend Michael Hayward-Jones, with whom I first worked in 1976 in dinner theatre, un 1998 in MIRETTE at Goodspeed, and this is the first time I've seen him since. It was was good to see Gregg Edelman as well, an old friend since around 1988 and the BABES IN ARMS recording. I think the book for the show is fine, but I'd asure like another set of music and lyrics.
What the hell?
WTH, indeed!
I set it to record "Fringe" and "The Mentalist" and then turned it off. I switched to the TV mode and watched "The Biggest Loser" via rabbit ears.
After 10 p.m., I returned to my DVR and checked my DVR cache thinking I'd play "Fringe". Only "The Mentalist" recorded. I checked my "scheduled recordings" and saw that the 9-10 p.m. block was set to record on the Fox channel, but it was then around 10:15 p.m. and nothing had happened.
I don't know whether there was a glitch in how I set it up, or in the way I turned the DVR off after setting it up (I'd actually set the recordings a few days ago). Possibly, I may have needed to leave the DVR on while changing the signal I was viewing. I just don't know.
Live and learn. And hopefully not get burned.
One possibility: When I have two shows on two channels scheduled to record but am watching another, third, channel, the DVR requires me to choose one of the two programs I am trying to record...OR, it will cancel one or both. I generally select one channel, and then change the viewing mode to TV while the DVR remains on. Last night, I figured that if my DVR was turned off when the recording began, all would be well. However, it might have been necessary for the DVR to have been on one of those channels before I turned it off.
-
And I was very angry to discover that my DVR did NOT record "Fringe" last night although it was set to record it. I am very unhappy.
Is the episode being rebroadcast? My DVR recorded it, although I haven't watched it or last week's episode, yet. Would you want a copy if it's not being rebroadcast...assuming that there isn't a problem with what I recorded?
-
Is the episode being rebroadcast? My DVR recorded it, although I haven't watched it or last week's episode, yet. Would you want a copy if it's not being rebroadcast...assuming that there isn't a problem with what I recorded?
It isn't being rebroadcast that I can see, but I don't want you to record it for me. Like MattH, I'm still not sure that this show is going to be a favorite or not. If we were talking "Heroes" or "Lost", I'd jump at the chance for a copy.
I was angry because it might have been two shows I wanted to see very badly, and I have no idea exactly why one didn't record. I don't want that to happen when it's important.
Thanks for offering, George.
I am surprised something didn't pop up to give you the option to record or cancel.
I did really enjoy the show. And they made it very riveting for the viewer at home. But i felt horrible for the contestants. Making them wait to find out who was eliminated till the end and not telling them who would dance next was just cruel.
A lot of my early favorites were left till the end (rocco, cody, and even though she wasn't very good susan lucci).
I think the right person totally went home. So that was good for a change.
I thought cloris leachman was very funny (i'm curious DR Cilla if you or your mom thought she was funny last night). I thought the Rock Star INXS lady was very good again (brooke). The football player was good for his size. I was so happy rocco did well ( i really like him and right now he one of the ones i am rooting for).
I'm not sure yet who my fav is. But the dancing was very enjoyable!
I wonder who will go home tonight. I actually thought last night it would be between 1)patch guy 2)kim 3) ted mcginley. I really have no idea how popular kim's reality show is. And i'm not sure if ted is very popular (but since he has a no name partner, i think that could hurt him).
fuafpoudaf udpa fadsfu aoiufopsauf dasufdsafusofuop fuopufop
Don't really think this is a spoiler.....I thinK Cloris Leachman will go home. I think she should go home. No I didn't think she was funny last night either. I totally respect what she's doing with the dancing, but her attitude isn't funny to me at all and I think it's time for her to go. DR Jennifer, don't think we're going to agree this season, but we are coming from different perspectives since you like to cheer for the pro and I look at the star. It will be interesting to see where this goes.
-
I am surprised something didn't pop up to give you the option to record or cancel.
On my Comcast DVR, I can record two different channels while watching one of them or I can actually watch third program that I've already recorded and is on the DVR hard drive. But I can't record two programs and watch live TV.
-
When YENTL first came out a lot of people asked me if I was related to Mandy Patinkin. Hard to believe, but true. Now people ask me if I'm related to Michael McDonald. (Also true, easier to believe).
However, it might have been necessary for the DVR to have been on one of those channels before I turned it off.
DR Ron Pulliam - I'd go with the "one possibility".
I know that we've sometimes "missed" a show because we didn't realize there was going to be a program programming overlap. -And we've even missed the "What do you want to do?" pop-up a few times as we've changed channels - thus, blocking out the pop-up, and stopping the recording of the channel we were previously on.
-
If you can only record two channels at once, you can only watch one show & record the other. You can't add a third show.
Yes, I know. But I can watch a show on a third channel via my TV by selecting "TV" vice HDMT2, which is the DVR setting I programmed. That mode allows me to watch over-the-air signals when my cable channels are preoccupied with recordings.
I am surprised something didn't pop up to give you the option to record or cancel.
It couldn't, but it may have wanted to. The DVR was turned "off". I was watching just the TV via rabbit ears. The DVR was supposed to record the selected channels automatically.
Oh -- and a very Happy Birthday to Miss Wae-Ling Goldstein, who is five years old today!
-
DR elmore - How full was the house this afternoon? -And thanks for your review. It will be interesting to compare and contrast your opinions with DR Ben's.
-
Well, maybe, DR Jose, but that's how I've felt about this neighbor for 20+ years. As soon as we moved into the house, she explained to Richard that the hill between her house and ours was on our property and she expected him to mow it.
I also suspect, elderly as she is, she has not been out and about much in the past week and a half to see just how much debris is still around. She probably thinks those branches are the only ones still not cleared away.
Richard has decided to t-a-k-e h-i-s t-i-m-e dealing with them.
We used to have a neighbor my mother referred to as "The Wicked Witch of the North" (I know the wicked witches are east and west, but she lived north of us)
It's really too bad I'm de-clawed...
I'd think you'd be more depressed over the neutering!
Are the children of B'wayworld weeping over the closing of Legally Blonde? It had a nice long run, but my guess is it is nowhere near recouping - perhaps the tour will help.
-
Yes, I know. But I can watch a show on a third channel via my TV by selecting "TV" vice HDMT2, which is the DVR setting I programmed. That mode allows me to watch over-the-air signals when my cable channels are preoccupied with recordings.
I have never seen that option. I wonder if any one else has it.
Can you prioritize your programs? Then the favorite two should record first.
-
Two spring to mind, just because I really liked them - a late 1950s show called Panic, which was sort of Twilight Zoneish and Hitchcockish. I have managed to see some of the episodes that I'd remembered vividly - they're not that well made, but I like the stories. The other was a series called Way Out, which was hosted by Roald Dahl and which aired Friday nights on CBS just before The Twilight Zone. Both shows had, I think, one-season runs - Way Out maybe less.
Frankly, I was shocked that GUNSMOKE was cancelled.
Are the children of B'wayworld weeping over the closing of Legally Blonde? It had a nice long run, but my guess is it is nowhere near recouping - perhaps the tour will help.
I dunno. I don't read the boards (either). As for the tour... Well... It's mainly playing medium to small markets, so... -I mean, it opened in Providence, RI, last week. It's also running under one of those "experimental" Equity Contracts. I guess it's a good compromise for the producers and actors alike, however, with the way the contract is structured along with how the tour is being booked and managed, the actors will not be able to file for full unemployment benefits once the tour closes. :-\
DR elmore - How full was the house this afternoon? -And thanks for your review. It will be interesting to compare and contrast your opinions with DR Ben's.
Packed. And very enthusiastic.
I am so jealous....I wish I could terrorize NY the first weekend in October, too
I will have to watch for the BBC production. I have read the books by Phillippa Gregory
I would love to see The Tudors...
I believe they are dead.
I believe they are dead.
I see dead people!
Instead I watched last night's GENERAL HOSPITAL: NIGHT SHIFT off SoapNet. Chad Allen is making the first of a three episode story-arc as a love interest for the gay intern on the staff. They did have obvious chemistry together, and I'll look forward to the next two episodes. Chad's character needs a liver transplant, and since his arc is only three episodes, he's either not going to get it, or he'll get it and it won't take. Either way, they're missing what could be a great, long term relationship.
Maybe he is going to get it, and then he won't care about the transplant!
-
I have never seen that option. I wonder if any one else has it.
Can you prioritize your programs? Then the favorite two should record first.
DR Jane, you can watch an over the air via rabbit ears because you aren't going through the DVR to get your programming that way. I have been able to do this before, but my DVR wasn't "off" I was just watching over the air instead of "component 1" which is where my DVR comes into my TV
Now I get it! That is not possible for us, we must have our satellite in order to see the shows. We can't watch any location stations, including the news.
I will be going out to LA as well, on the 23rd. I think it may only be a one day trip, but I hope there might be a way to have a little bit of time there to see friends and maybe have a little Ghengis Cohen!
That would depend on Mrs. Cohen.
I feel so bad. I was just visiting my niece. And when i tried to leave she had tears going down her cheek and she was grabbing my leg. :(
If i had not been with someone who needed to leave i would have stayed. It was so sad.
But i was not amused because said person said they needed to leave at 7:45pm, and that at 7:20pm announced "we're leaving now". And the best, "i never said we had to leave at 7:45pm". I hate people who do that!
-
It's currently 8:15pm eastern, and i'm having a lot of trouble loading pages from HHW. :(
DR RonP re: Fringe.
You can watch it on fox.com.
I also have problems sometimes with my tivo like system. I can record 2 shows and watch a 3rd that was already recorded. I can also record, or watch something via my VCR at the same time.
But i usually select things to record each week. So if occasionally a show gets added and they overlap the system just cancels one. Or sometimes it shows that something will record via my list. But if i go to my program guide it is not lit up in red. No red, no record.
-
Oh my, I think the couple eliminated is going to be a surprise tonight....
-
On my Comcast DVR, I can record two different channels while watching one of them or I can actually watch third program that I've already recorded and is on the DVR hard drive. But I can't record two programs and watch live TV.
This is exactly how mine works. Except i have the option of watching thru my vcr (and or recording there also).
re: last night's DANCING WITH THE STARS
Don't really think this is a spoiler.....I thinK Cloris Leachman will go home. I think she should go home. No I didn't think she was funny last night either. I totally respect what she's doing with the dancing, but her attitude isn't funny to me at all and I think it's time for her to go. DR Jennifer, don't think we're going to agree this season, but we are coming from different perspectives since you like to cheer for the pro and I look at the star. It will be interesting to see where this goes.
I don't necessarily think we will agree this season. But i don't cheer for the pros over the celebs. I mean i go by the celeb. But there are certain pros i don't care for and certain ones i love. So for example last year julianne was with a bad dancer. I did'nt want him to win just because of her. Nor did i think he should win (he wasn't very good). But this year you can take someone i don't really know (cody) who has potential, but because he is paired with julianne i am more interested.
That's interesting that you didn't think cloris leachman was funny at all. I thought she was. And while i don't really care if she stays that long. I think it is quite something for her to do this at her age.
I think will go watch tonight's show now.
I am curious to know, and this not an Ask BK Day question, does anyone have any thoughts regarding Sen McCain's suspension of his campaign in order to focus on the Economy?
OK... Tonight's "Project Runway" just provided me with a real good laugh. Or two. ;D
-
I am curious to know, and this not an Ask BK Day question, does anyone have any thoughts regarding Sen McCain's suspension of his campaign in order to focus on the Economy?
Is it a true suspension of his campaign? or it more of a way to "avoid" the upcoming, scheduled debates?
I haven't followed this latest development that much - yet - but do you happen to know if he's called on Senator Obama to do the same thing?
-
He is either sincere or he is using it as an excuse not to debate.
I've been listening to Ron Paul. I think in these scary economical times he, or someone with his knowledge, should have been McCain's VP pick.
-
I only wonder why Sen. McCain didn't first contact the Obama campaign and see about an across the board suspension of the campaign, so that both senators could have made a joint announcement and then both could have flown back to Washington. Instead, it seems like McCain is just backing out of the debate.
According to CNN, McCain has suspended his political campaign until the bail out is approved in Congress.
According to one report, he did (Obama still wants the debate). But then it seems he went and made the announcement. I'm waiting for something on factcheck about all this.
At first I thought McCain just wanted to delay the debates. If he isn't campaigning either, that is something. I just hope he is listening to NEW advisers regarding the economic situation & what to do about it.
I haven't followed this latest development that much - yet - but do you happen to know if he's called on Senator Obama to do the same thing?
Yes, he did and Obama said he was around if they needed him. McCain also called for a meeting of Congressional leaders with President Bush, Himself and Obama and that is going to happen in the morning. If they get a bill before Friday, my understanding is the debate will go on, if they don't McCain wants to postpone it to work something out. There are 43 days left until the election and the topic is foreign policy - not the economy. It doesn't seem that a few days will make a difference.
The experts all say if something isnt' done by the weekend the economy is toast and we're in big trouble. I honestly don't think it's a ploy. The word is that credit will essentially be frozen and you won't be able to get any credit if something isn't done right away. Since both sides are saying this is the biggest crisis since the great depression, seems to me they better get their butts to work and do something to fix this mess.
-
He did talk to Obama and they were working on a joint statement. Don't think there was a conversation about suspending the campaign.
-
Or at least campaign ads, calls, mailings etc
-
Here's the joint statement of McCain/Obama
The following is a joint statement on the economic crisis from John McCain and Barack Obama:
“The American people are facing a moment of economic crisis. No matter how this began, we all have a responsibility to work through it and restore confidence in our economy. The jobs, savings, and prosperity of the American people are at stake.
“Now is a time to come together — Democrats and Republicans — in a spirit of cooperation for the sake of the American people. The plan that has been submitted to Congress by the Bush Administration is flawed, but the effort to protect the American economy must not fail.
“This is a time to rise above politics for the good of the country. We cannot risk an economic catastrophe. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.”
So much drama for the last hour.
I really liked A TALE OF TWO CITIES in spite of its faults, which are mostly its lyrics. Since I think LES MIZ is a mess with maybe four good songs and a sloppy attempt at telling a story covering 20 years on a Lazy Susan set, I really liked how smoothly the plot ofTWO CITIES was laid out and how nicely it was staged. It's amazing how a wedding veil can show the passage of several years so easily.
While I don't think any of the songs in A TALE OF TWO CITIES is very good, and I think the too-often simplistic lyrics sometimes seem out of character for the singer, I liked the book, set design, and costumes very much. I also liked the cast quite a lot, especially James Barbour who's got a role anyone would kill for. The ingenue playing Lucie Manette redeems herself here after her god-awful turn as the Mermaid Siren on the idiotic soap opera PASSIONS. I liked her look, her bearing, and her lovely voice. Who woulda thought?
It's also got a great supporting cast, including my friend Michael Hayward-Jones, with whom I first worked in 1976 in dinner theatre, un 1998 in MIRETTE at Goodspeed, and this is the first time I've seen him since. It was was good to see Gregg Edelman as well, an old friend since around 1988 and the BABES IN ARMS recording. I think the book for the show is fine, but I'd asure like another set of music and lyrics.
DR Elmore,
Thanks for this full report. It's much appreciated.
Is Rob Richardson listed as part of the ensemble/cast? He was attached to the production for many years in its development, but I'm not sure if he's still around or not. He and I did a couple of shows together some years ago.
-
I have never seen that option. I wonder if any one else has it.
Can you prioritize your programs? Then the favorite two should record first.
No offense, DR Jane, but I don't think you're understanding what he's doing with the viewing. The third show he chose to watch has nothing to do with his cable box. The cable box's DVR was (supposed to be) recording the two shows at once, both at 9 p.m. At the same time, he was watching a show over-the-air using his TV's built-in digital tuner which has nothing whatsoever to do with cable. I do this all the time when I have three shows I want to see all airing at the same time (e.g. GREY'S ANATOMY, SUPERNATURAL, THE OFFICE all on Thursday at 9.)
-
Now I get it! That is not possible for us, we must have our satellite in order to see the shows. We can't watch any location stations, including the news.
Your TV must not have a built-in digital tuner, then, because if it did, you could watch without the satellite as long as you had rabbit ears attached to that built-in tuner. I have had two HDTVs that didn't have built-in digital tuners, so I either had to buy an over-the-air digital tuner box (and they're much cheaper now than they used to be) or have to rely on what the cable company (or in your case satellite company) offered.
-
I managed to watch six more episodes of FRIDAY THE 13th - THE SERIES tonight. My goodness, these 26-episode seasons take forever to get through. I feel like I'm just now making a dent. In this latest batch, I've seen everything from possessed boxing gloves to a charmed compact, tattoo needles which can create live creatures, and a doctor (played by Cliff Gorman) who had Jack the Ripper's scalpel.
-
They must have interrupted regular broadcasting on the networks because I noticed CRIMINAL MINDS was running far past 10 p.m. I was going to watch CSI: NY live but when it was obvious CRIMINAL MINDS was running overtime, I just set the DVR to record the program at 11 p.m., too, so I'd be able to see all of CSI: NY.
-
I did watch BONES which had the best episode of the season thus far. Really surprising mystery, and a GREAT special guest star. Brought tears to my eyes it was so enjoyable to have this actor on the show. Supposedly this is the first of several visits to the show this season.
PROJECT RUNWAY:
I didn't agree with the winner (would have put that outfit second), but she's been denied too many times when she deserved to win, so I figured they'd give it to her. They weren't about to let Jerrell win three times in a row (though I LOVED his outfit).
There was no way Suede was going to win the competition, and he's been doing weak work for awhile, but Kenley should have gotten the boot tonight, both on poor design and her sickening attitude.
-
I was at a bar tonight having a drink with friends while Bush was giving his speech. People at the bar were actually standing up and booing and catcalling his every word (and there was absolutely no one telling them to keep quiet.) One guy actually stood up and started calling for revolution! And everyone cheered! It was weird and frightening and--I have to admit it--thrilling! My heart was pounding! I wonder if that was what it was like in the taverns during pre-revolutionary Paris?
Heading down now to get some sleep.
Meaning the Chex, not the cocoa
Although I believe COCO was a good source of fiber
I, too, like the sweet and salty mix. Trying to watch a motion picture on DVD but the phone keeps ringing and I end up yakking.
Before the name change of the show, I heard they were going to sell Bounce Chex as a tie-in for the new Sondheim show.
At Title of show, they considered selling Blank Chex. (Just a joke.)
Well, maybe Jane lives is a reception area like ours - there is no rabbit with ears long enough to pull in broadcast TV. We are is such "commune" with nature, we can't even get satellite (and have to walk out to the road to have any hope of cell-phone voice reception.)
Well, with the country in a declared national emergency which congress is frantically attempting to address, for an elected representative of the peole NOT to be at his desk would seem the height of irresponsibility.
Especially if his economics ideas only contribute to more of the same bad policies that the Bush administration has instituted over the past seven years.
The American people, though, are who Congress is considering now. Americans all over are furious over this "bail-out" and want some folks to pay for shoddy mismanagement. For me, this includes the people who bit off more than they could chew and assumed mortgages they could never hope to pay when the interest came due.
There is a lot of talk about helping out the beleagured homeowners facing foreclosure, but I can't afford to buy half the house that many of them also could not afford, but on which they are defaulting. And I'm supposed to help bail them out because they made stupid decisions? I think not.
I'm sick of picking up the tab for bloated corporations like the insurance companies that did NOT have to pay for Katrina damages because Uncle Sugar stepped in. What the hell are we paying premiums for if the companies cannot come through when they are needed?
And who is going to regulate stuff? Deregulation has been the bane of our economy for many years now. If the government is going to sell out futures into fiscal bondage, the least it can do is ensure diligent oversight and making everyone involved toe thel ine.
There is general (read Congress, Bush, Obama, McCain) agreement that implementation of the bail-out requires a special oversight.
I'll grant you that those who bit off more than they could chew do not deserve a bail-out; however:
If all "those above" default on their mortgages we will end up with a real-estate market flooded with re-pos and a banking industry in melt-down (if the bad loans were individually held by the original lender banks we might adopt a "tough luck" attitude to the bank; however, the tainted paper has been repackaged into a variety of different financial products which are now held by all sorts of entities, including public employee and individual pension plans.
Instead of simply evicting the half-dead beats and ending up with no income, a non-marketable property, and a family now dependent on the state for housing, we might be better off working a deal to leave the owners in their homes, collect what they can afford, and attach a property lien to be repaid at time of future sale.
