Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no rant, and now it is time for you to post until the no-rant cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PROSPICIENT!
-
Welcome fifteen GUESTS.

-
CONGRATULATIONS to DR JoseSPiano on his lofty new perch in the HHW firmament! :D
-
TOD: Games of chance? Well, I've been known to buy a PowerBall ticket occasionally when the prize gets over 200 million or so. But I don't really need to, because I know that soon I shall be winning the Publisher's Clearing House Giveaway.
Oh, and someone once tried to teach me the rules of Craps. It wasn't a particular success.
-
And the word of the day is: PROSPICIENT!
Getting advice about retirement from a trained financial councilor is PROSPICIENT.
Rejecting half of it and instead taking advice from your brother-in-law is more PRO/AMSPICIENT.
-
When I was a kid, I liked Chutes and Ladders, which is sorta-kinda of a game of chance. I mean, after all, whether you win or lose all depends on the roll of a die.
It doesn't appeal to me quite as much now.
-
As for games involving my losing money just because of playing (and losing) some fool game... NO WAY! It's my money, I'm spending it the way I want to, and don't think I'm just going to hand it all over to you in order to play some stupid game, you with the greedy leer I don't trust one whit!
-
workies
-
Morning all. It's late for me so I shall write my thoughts about Tale later.
I'm late, I'm late, for a very important printout.
-
Good morning, all! I'm doing some proofing this morning and around 11:30 I will walk down to my appointment with my nutritionist. After that, NYPL at Lincoln Center for some research on scene designers.
Tonight, DR Jose and I are attending a dress rehearsal of DON GIOVANNI at the Met. I'm very much looking forward to it.
TOD: I don't gamble, except for lotteries. When I was about 12 or 13, I won a Halloween lottery; the prize was a season pass to the Paramount Theatre, a glorious movie palace long torn down in my hometown. I believe it was the Paramount and the public library where most of my childhod was spent.
-
And the word of the day is: PROSPICIENT!
And The Song Of The Day Is: IN MY OWN LIFETIME
-
I am getting ready to watch LET'S DO IT AGAIN, a Technicolor remake of THE AWFUL TRUTH with Mr Ray Milland and Miss Jane Wyman taking the roles of Mr Cary Grant and Miss Irene Dunne.
I have never seen it all the way through, but I remember it being a nicely designed movie, although the stars don't have a chance against the originals.
-
Oh and Aldo Ray takes the Ralph Bellamy role....he looks very nice in a tuxedo.
There is a BIG sign on the lawn since today is the actual anniversary of the wedding of my parents 60 years ago....I will take a picture, but I do not know if I can upload it to my computer, being in SAFE MODE and all.
Still no email from the computer man.
-
Thursday morning greetings! Another clean-out-the-cube day for me.
-
I like the Powerball....and once I won $4.
And the first week of the lottery in Indiana almost 20 years ago, I won $56!
-
I don't see what everyone is so worried about - Hillary Clinton is in the Senate and she knows everything and has all the answers....she was up at 3 a.m. this morning working on it, so everyone else can just RELAX.
-
Although someone else had to make the coffee for her.
-
Perhaps I'll listen to the debate after all:
http://www.azcentral.com/news/election/debatebingo/azc_bingo.html
-
DR JRand58 - Forgot to mention: last week's issue of Entertainment Weekly had a full-page photo of Debra Messing as Channing as Dolly.
I knew you wouldn't want to miss it! :)
-
TOD: The first time we went to Las Vegas, DR Megan picked out a slot machine for me to try. I put in a quarter and got five quarters back. Then we were chased out of the casino because DRs Megan and Sandra were underage.
That was the only time I ever won anything. The few quarters I plunked into machines after that disappeared and I saw just where that was going. I probably put less than five dollars into slot machines in my whole life.
I just go for the carpets.
-
I just go for the carpets.
Can I borrow this for my headstone? ;)

:P
-
You spent the night at the Shady Nook Motel in Featherston?
Don't worry, darling, it was approved by the Auto Club.
-
I have one word for you: nickels
(Meaning play the nickel slots - I guess that's now more than one word)
-
My mom loved the penny slots and the one-dollar blackjack tables
-
Good mornin', y'all!
TOD: I'm not big on gambling. I'll sometimes play penny ante poker with friends. Years back I would do Atlantic City a couple of times a year, but then they did away with stocking the slot machines with actual coins and it became all paper and just wasn't fun for me to play anymore. I did like playing roulette and that's where I made my biggest killing, winning 800 some odd dollars at one sitting.
-
THE PENNY SLOTS AT THE IMPERIAL PALACE - that's the title of my mom's bio
-
Indeed, the slots are not as much fun without actual coins
-
I like the opening track on SCENT OF MYSTERY, too....and the vocals by Mr Fisher.
-
McCain just got applause for taking a stand against malaria
-
If we want coins for the slots, we can go to McCain. he says he intends to be the agent of change.
-
the agent of change
I thought they were Mary Testa and Tony Kushner?
-
I thought McCain was the New Maverick.
-
McCain just got applause for taking a stand against malaria
Well I am glad somebody did! 8)
-
DR ArnoldMBrockman has me wishin' I had THE ROTHSCHILDS OCR on my iPod. Unfortunately, I do not...
-
DR Laura, Presidential Debate Bingo looks like a lot of fun!
-
;)
-
Perhaps I'll listen to the debate after all:
http://www.azcentral.com/news/election/debatebingo/azc_bingo.html
This is great! Reminds me of the "graphic organizers" teachers are encouraged to use to help their students engage more actively when using learning media (videos, etc.)
-
TOD - I've never been enough of a risk-taker to be much of a gambler. If I have nothing else to say, at least I can recommend a book:
Money for Nothing: One Man's Journey through the Dark Side of Lottery Millions, by Edward Ugel

Our very own DR Elmore is mentioned in paragraph #4 of
This article from today's hometown newspaper (http://www.middletownjournal.com/hp/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/09/25/mj092508mlthistory.html)

Yes CBS's CRIMINAL MINDS did go over last night on CBS (on the east coast). The president interupted. I did manage to see it (although it is being rebroadcast on saturday night). But it really annoyed me.
For one, i don't know why i had chosen to record it on CBS since it was on a canadian station at the same time. but two, i guess they don't realize that many people record shows and would miss the last 15 minutes if they delay the show. It was just a fluke that i caught it in time.
It was a good episode.
-
Good morning!
It's a cool, overcast day here, and the highs aren't supposed to get out of the 60s. Never fear, in a few days, we're to be back into the 80s (but still have cool nights). Fine with me.
-

He's going to be famous yet!
-
DR derBrucer,
You're right that DR Jane may live in an area with no over-the-air reception. I was merely alerting her to a POSSIBILITY that she might not have been aware of. No reason not to exercise all options IF they're available.
-
On TV Tonight:
More season premieres and new episodes:
ABC - UGLY BETTY, GREY'S ANATOMY (two hour premiere)
CBS - SURVIVOR in HD for the first time and a two hour show (I believe CSI tonight is a repeat)
NBC - MY NAME IS EARL (hour), THE OFFICE (hour), ER
CW - SMALLVILLE, SUPERNATURAL
-
Today I must continue with more FRIDAY THE 13TH as I'm not even halfway through the set. Of course, once prime time TV starts, I'll be watching much of it "live" since there is so much the DVR will have to be recording. I will be able to start about 15 minutes later and watch UGLY BETTY by scanning through commercials. Once GREY'S begins, I'll be back "live" on the network watching the show in HD over the air.
-
All of the designers on Pwoject Wunway looked funny last night.....and I agree that Jerrell probably should have won. It's remarkable what hair and makeup and an outfit can do to completely transform someone.....
Finally got rid of someone on Top Design who should have been gone the first week - but the team member who survived last week should also have been gone weeks ago......
-
And the word of the day is: PROSPICIENT!
I for one am feeling antispicient today.
-
He's going to be famous yet!
Infamous, even.
-
I remember watching one episode of FRIDAY THE 13TH and being very disappointed that it didn't have anything to do with the movies....and at one hour, it sure took a long time to tell its story. I don't think I ever watched it again.
-
I just want to wish a Happy Birthday to my son, David, who is 39 today.
Now, for this year, he has something in common with Jack Benny.
-
It's going to be so cool today that I'll be wearing jeans for the first time since spring today instead of my usual shorts when I go out to lunch.
-
I remember watching one episode of FRIDAY THE 13TH and being very disappointed that it didn't have anything to do with the movies....and at one hour, it sure took a long time to tell its story. I don't think I ever watched it again.
That's my major gripe with the series. Most of these episodes could have been far more gripping if they weren't so padded out to run an hour.
-
I had a gig last night, and got home to a rebroadcast of Shrub's little talk to the nation. I told Betsy that he understood approximately every seventeenth word he uttered.
-
39!!!
Boy, does that make me feel old.
-
39!!
I remember when I was 39!
-
Infamous, even.
Oh, I wouldn't be so sure. There are others mentioned in that article far more notorious than I!
-

That many, DR JMK? You give him more credit than I do.
After the speech, I asked DH Richard if this crisis means it's a good thing or a bad thing for me to retire at the end of the year. He said, "It just is."

Whew! I thought maybe it was an investigative report mentioning Elmo as a suspect in his sister-in-law's mysterious attack/illness/death!!! 8)
-
Oh, I wouldn't be so sure. There are others mentioned in that article far more notorious than I!
DR Elmore - I will send you the clipping, because there's a photo of 2 late legendary Middletown actresses.
-
Guess I'll head down now and start getting cleaned up for my lunch out later with friends.
WBBL.
-
Oh, I wouldn't be so sure. There are others mentioned in that article far more notorious than I!
People's level of "notoriety" has a way of abating with the advancement of years. Of course, those closest to the events remember with vivid clarity the scandals that led to the notoriety.
I remember being scandalized a couple of times in high school. Less than 5 years later, I wouldn't have skipped a beat learning about the same behavior in someone else.
We either get jaded or "times" change. But we still remember our "first" exposure to "scan'alous behavior"!
Larry Moore, don't you tell us that you never scandalized anyone! :D
-
DR Elmore - I will send you the clipping, because there's a photo of 2 late legendary Middletown actresses.
(I totally should not be posting this, so forgive me if I offend you:)
Late? As in...late making their entrances?
As in...late and might be pregnant?
Or, "late" as in...sadly deceased?
-
McCain just got applause for taking a stand against malaria
It's nice to know he's sticking to the "issues" that are most important.
-
Infamous, even.
He's already well past infamous, donchathink?!!?
-
...
Or, "late" as in...sadly deceased?
Unfortunately, DR Ron Pulliam, this is the answer :'(
-
(I totally should not be posting this, so forgive me if I offend you:)
Late? As in...late making their entrances?

Stone cold dead, I do believe.

It's about time for my walk down to 57th Street.

And the word of the day is: PROSPICIENT!
Whoever wins the presidential election will probably convince Americans his prospicient fiscal policies will keep the U.S. on solid ground.

I am so excited tonight is the 2 hour premiere of Survivor.
I'm going out tonight but will make sure i am home in time. Yeah!
(and UGLY BETTY starts too!).

Happy Birthday to David Druxy!

I think it's only me and DR cillaliz who are watching this year. I was definitely okay with who went home (it was who i thought would go). In the first weeks especially it has a lot to do with who your partner is and how well known you are (if you have a fan base). Ted simply had a new partner who nobody knew (and who didn't seem to catch on quickly like julianne or her brother). And i just didn't know if he'd have a large fanbase.
I was definitely happy for rocco (right now i think he is one of my favs). Btw, are mario lopez and karina dating cause i happened to catch an episode of sunset tan and they were both on and they introduced her as his girlfriend!

I'm up, I suppose, and it looks like a pretty day outside.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And so is my left leg. Well, actually it is "elevated". It's finally feeling almost back to normal, and I'm hoping it is back to normal by this weekend.
-
As for "Top Design"... What's the deal with all the group challenges this season?
-
As for "Project Runway"... I laughed and laughed last night, and next week looks really good! Ah, the Drama! ;)
-
As for "America's Next Top Model"... OY! OY! OY! ;D
-
As for "Top Design"... What's the deal with all the group challenges this season?
I don't like them either!
Wow what a beautiful fall day it is weather wise here today.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR DRUXY'S DS DAVID!!!
*I remember 39. ;)
-
As for "America's Next Top Model"... OY! OY! OY!
They're celebrating Yom Kippur, too? ;)
-
Oh! Is that what they used to call it? :o
;)
Down South it was! You betcha!
-
As for "Project Runway"... I laughed and laughed last night, and next week looks really good! Ah, the Drama! ;)
The previews ALWAYS seem to be red herrings, though. I'm thinking that all those tears were "joy". I cannot fathom Korto and Jerrell and Leanne being levelled to tears over bad critiques.
I don't recall seeing Kenley in tears....I either missed it or it's a sign of something good! :D
-
As for "Top Design"... What's the deal with all the group challenges this season?
What was the deal with Nathan and Preston dissing Shazia all through the competition and then throwing her under the bus at the end?
I gathered that they weren't thrilled at having her on the team and that her rep wasn't all that great, but they owed her a voice.
The trouble with that bachelor pad was NOT the curtains/valances. It was a lack of focus.
-
I am so excited tonight is the 2 hour premiere of Survivor.
I'm going out tonight but will make sure i am home in time. Yeah!
(and UGLY BETTY starts too!).
Careful, DR Jennifer...you are on the verge of being about to lose control...and you might find you like it!
-
I won't dance, don't ask me.
Page 4...that is all.
-
How about a dance of the rants
-
Dance of the rants must be done in

I normally do not gamble; I have nothing against it, but if i put money in a machine, i'd at least like to get stamps or a Diet-Coke. On ships or once in Las Vegas, i have won about $70.00 but only invested about 50 cents. Once with the lottery, i won about $120.00.
That's just not my thing. The money's nice, but I'd rather play poker or gin just for the fun of it.
-
From DerBrucer:
Well, maybe Jane lives is a reception area like ours - there is no rabbit with ears long enough to pull in broadcast TV. We are is such "commune" with nature, we can't even get satellite (and have to walk out to the road to have any hope of cell-phone voice reception.)
That's about right. The cell phone service isn't as bad as yours. I can get text messages inside & I can hear the phone ring, just can't answer it.
We are very grateful for our satellite as there is no cable here. The first few years living here we had to get letters from the local tv stations for permission to receive programming from out of the area. It was a real hassle. We fiddled with special antenna's in the attic & nothing worked well.
-
I just want to wish a Happy Birthday to my son, David, who is 39 today.
Now, for this year, he has something in common with Jack Benny.
;D
HAPPY 39th BIRTHDAY TO DAVID!
-
I am hungry.
-
That many, DR JMK? You give him more credit than I do.
And more credit than Keith gave him. I found Keith rather entertaining during the speech.
-
Took this today, hopefully it isn't too BIG!
;D
-
Sweet DR JRand.
-
As for "America's Next Top Model"... OY! OY! OY! ;D
Or In Hebrew- YO ! YO ! YO !
-
DR DRUXY-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DS DAVID
-
From Matt H:
No offense, DR Jane, but I don't think you're understanding what he's doing with the viewing. The third show he chose to watch has nothing to do with his cable box. The cable box's DVR was (supposed to be) recording the two shows at once, both at 9 p.m. At the same time, he was watching a show over-the-air using his TV's built-in digital tuner which has nothing whatsoever to do with cable. I do this all the time when I have three shows I want to see all airing at the same time (e.g. GREY'S ANATOMY, SUPERNATURAL, THE OFFICE all on Thursday at 9.)
No Offense, and like you I was just mentioning another option that might come in handy in the future. Since only one show recorded, best to have it be your first choice.
-
happy birthday to Dear Son David of Dear Reader Druxy
-
I bet David always wanted his father to be a DR
:)
-
I'm bored.
Go figure after last week and Monday's workload.
Seems like folks have decided to hibernate or something.
-
"Survivor" is now in HIGH DEFINITION! Can't wait to see this show when it premieres tonight.
-
I am responsible for the photo only, the sign and herd of flamingo are from my brother.
-
Let's Rant and Make Up
-
Games of "Chance" and I have no chemistry, sorry to say.
I do play the lottery, though. I win a dollar here, $3 there. Once I won $70, and another time I won $141.
Chicken feed, of course, to what I've spent on the tickets over the years.

Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off and Rant All Over Again![/i]

I'm bored.
I guess I'll just have to step up the wackiness a few notches.

What a day of reader emails. First several from noted film preservationist Robert Harris and now a slew (slough?) from David Lebrun, the guy who did that fabulous Maya doc I mentioned a few days ago. They like me, they really like me. ;)

Perhaps...for those doting on his dimples.

That will be the title of my next memoir: Doting On Dimples in My Dotage

I had a gig last night, and got home to a rebroadcast of Shrub's little talk to the nation. I told Betsy that he understood approximately every seventeenth word he uttered.

i guess they don't realize that many people record shows and would miss the last 15 minutes if they delay the show.
It matters not "what they realized" - if the US President asks for air time, the US Networks are going to give air time. Anyone who watched the US evening news should have anticiapted networks broadcasts delays at 9PM.

It really hasn't warmed up today. Right now, I have my office window open but the breeze is so strong and cold that I'm thinking of closing it if the breeze keeps up.

A few of them, yes. On the West Coast, we don't often get impacted by such events. Many times, the speeches are over by the time we get home from the evening commutes.
Locally, Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC and one PBS station will air live coverage of such a speech. Fortunately for me (and many more like me), the rest of the ComCast programming airs unscathed.
Sometimes, the major networks air the programming being preempted on alternate local stations.
-
I can't even remember if I posted when I got back from the long jog. I'm back from the long jog. I then had to do the two annoying errands, which, thankfully, went quickly and hopefully it means we're over THIS week's annoyances.
-
I then had to package up several boxes to ship, and now I'll take them to the postal office.
-
Yesterday I purchased cards & accidentally left one on the counter at the store. . When I called the store to ask if they had the card, they immediately said they hadn't known my name and were holding the card under Sherlock's name. I think that is sooo cute.
All the employees in the store have enjoyed watching Sherlock grow up.

I don't see what everyone is so worried about - Hillary Clinton is in the Senate and she knows everything and has all the answers....she was up at 3 a.m. this morning working on it, so everyone else can just RELAX.
She wasn't working on it at 3:00 AM, she was on the phone ;D

Let's Face the Music and Rant

I normally do not gamble; I have nothing against it, but if i put money in a machine, i'd at least like to get stamps or a Diet-Coke.

I was able to get 4 1/2 more episodes of FRIDAY THE 13th watched. Still more to go, and though I'll get a couple more watched tonight, the majority of the evening will be given over to TV. Can't help it. Thursday is just too jam packed with shows to be able to record everything for later. Some has to be watched "live."
-
She wasn't working on it at 3:00 AM, she was on the phone ;D
That's a sight more than many of the senators were doing at the time, I'll betcha!
-
One of those episodes was directed by David Cronenberg, a very effective one on a phony faith healer who found a cursed glove which would allow him to heal but then the injury would have to be passed on to another before the glove would heal again. Excellent episode, one of my favorites thus far.
-
Perhaps I'll listen to the debate after all:
http://www.azcentral.com/news/election/debatebingo/azc_bingo.html
Thank you DR Laura for this link. I am printing off cards and will give them to my friends~!
-
The one I'm in the middle of watching is a rather stylish vampire saga told in black and white (a cursed cape turns the wearer into a vampire). I'll look forward to see where this goes.
-
I switched over to the DVR to skim through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing of interest in the show or preview.
-
While I had the DVR fired up, I went ahead and started watching last night's CSI: NY. Only got about 15 minutes in, but I'll probably finish this tonight after GREY'S ANATOMY goes off which will make me late for logging back on later tonight.
But I will be here eventually.

I agree about last night. Not who I thought would go home, I liked him - didn't think he was a good dancer, but liked him. I thought Mario and Karina were together for awhile. Don't know why but I did

I used to bet on Sports once in a while. I won $1000.00 on a superbowl and $535.00 on the NCAA tournament. I've won $100 or $200 now and then. I got most of it buying squares on the chart at bars, where if the score ends up on your numbers you win. I actually picked the winners in the NCAA.
I haven't watched sports in years...maybe I should start doing that again
-
In law school we played nickle ante quarter limit poker. I usually came out ok at that.
-
I have never come out ahead playing the slots.
-
I won $1000 in a raffle once too
-
I also won....let's just say I've won a lot of things.
-
I haven't won anything in a year or so...maybe I'm due....hmmm I could go to the casino.....

I’m lucky I have Keith to sort through this for me. He finds the articles & interviews with intelligent, knowledgeable, people, for me to read & watch. One of my favorites is the Bill Moyers interview (http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/09192008/watch2.html) with Kevin Phillips, author of BAD MONEY.
I believe this is well worth watching. If you are at work, save it for later.

I've never been much of a gambler. Don't play the lottery, but I did play the nickel slots when I was in Las Vegas and one of them did pay off about $50 in nickels. As soon as it did, I stopped playing.

Heading down now to get back to viewing. I'll start with FRIDAY THE 13th and go from there.

This whole bailout thing is very, I don't know, weird. Suddenly we have 700 BILLION dollars. And who is it really helping, because at the end of the day I think we all know that it will mostly help those who don't need the help - those poor millionaires and billionaires who run Wall Street and play those games - for me, it's like giving 700 billion dollars to people who lose their shirts in Vegas. It's all a crapshoot, and those doing the crapshooting know what game they're in. So do the people who overpaid for housing knowing that if this sort of thing happened they'd be screwed, and the banks who allowed it to happen - it's what drove up the housing market to insane proportions and now they're paying the price. Again, it's a crapshoot. I didn't get a free ride when, because of the frivolous lawsuit I was put into sucked the financial life out of me and my mortgage payments were just too high to deal with because my house had cost a lot. No, I had to sell, like thousands of other people. I think history has taught us that this bailout will not benefit people who need it most, and somehow it will, as always, benefit the rich and entitled. There are so many better things to do with 700 billion dollars - health care, the poor, things to help this country. The dire economy can be laid squarely at the feet of the current administration and this is the legacy they'll leave whoever steps into office - 700 billion dollars.
-
In days of old, I was quite a regular poker player, both in private games, and occasionally in Vegas and Commerce. I don't do it much anymore. I've never been a slots player, even though I own a classic MAD magazine slot machine. Craps just confuses me, but if I'm with Mr. David Wechter, I play behind him and just do what he does - I've won every time. Roulette - never.

I still haven't heard anything about when I'll be seeing the final layout and text of the LACCTAA newsletter. I'm sure it won't be until six this evening or even later. I'll then have to proof it, give corrections, and then I'll want to see it one more time before it's printed to make sure that by fixing whatever needs fixing that it doesn't screw up something else.

Something I got in the e-mail today:
I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight ...
If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different."
Grow up in Alaska hunting and eating moose burgers, you're a quintessential American story.
If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.
If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.
If you’ve been married to the same woman for nearly 20 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.
If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.
If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control and how to recognize a sexual predator, you are eroding the fiber of society.
If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.
If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.
If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
OK, it’s much clearer now, right?

I don't know if any of the wonderful gals (and Singdaw) on this board are much interested in jewelry, but here is a link to my cousin Molly's website where she makes and sells her own jewelry. I saw some of it when we had the family reunion and she has some fantastic stuff! It is already being sold at a boutique in NYC (however, Molly's prices are very low...and I think she has free shipping).
Here are a couple of examples:
She calls this one FOR THE BIRDS

My Lord, I haven't stopped once today. Been writing questions for Karen Morrow's Q&A on Saturday. And I guess I'll be seeing the newsletter in the next couple of hours.
Jennifer, I doubt seriously that President Bush gave a rat's ass about people who were recording programs last night.

Sorry to be such a heathen, but I love to gamble. I play the Lotto, the Mega Millions, the Match 4, and the Hit 5. I also buy scratch tickets from time to time. I have won $500.00 a few times on scratch tickets, but on the lottery games mostly just $3.00 here, and $10.00 there.
I enjoy playing the slot machines, and my friends and I usually go about once a month. Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. My good friend is very lucky. She wins lots of jackpots on slot machines. When I win it is usually only $100 to 200.
I don't play Blackjack, or Craps or any of the other table games. The one time I played roulette it was only becasue Hugh O'Brien was playing at a table in Vegas, so I played too.
-
...I play the Lotto, the Mega Millions, the Match 4, and the Hit 5. I also buy scratch tickets from time to time.
...
Now that you mention it, I have contributed to office pools once in a while and bought scratch tickets for stocking stuffers or table favors for holiday dinners. We've never had any big winners, though.
-
I don't have enought money to play games of chance.
Neither do I. I have always lost money on such games. My parents have a friend, Mona, who goes to the local casino and regularly wins. Well, a couple of times a year, at least: $200, $800, $500. Me...bupkis.

I just want to wish a Happy Birthday to my son, David, who is 39 today.

My friend (the lucky one) went down to the casino with my sister one day on thier lunch hour. They were sitting next to each other, when my friend hit a Jackpot for $1,600.00. While she was waiting for the casino to do all the needed paperwork, my friend stuck her ticket in a nearby machine, and she promptly hit a second Jackpot for $1,500.00. $3,100.00 in an hour! Nice lunch.

I like Molly's jewelry, too. People with that kind of talent amaze me.
You should see her house and yard...BETTER HOMES AND GARDEN!!!! And all this from the cousin who we thought would end up on the wrong side of the tracks...at the very least!
(But she was my favorite cousin when I was a little kid)
-
Speaking of necklaces (those are lovely, MBarnum)...at work, we're having a fund-raiser spaghetti feast and silent auction on Monday for a co-worker whose (adult) daughter died from brain cancer. :'( Another co-worker has made a necklace (it's beautiful) and donated it for a raffle item and we've been given a hand-made quilt as another raffle item. People have also donated quite a few silent-auction items. My sister gave me several things and so far, most things that have been put out already, have gotten bids! And over $400 in cash has been donated. :) The daughter was in a clinical trial in Texas to test a new drug (I think), but it didn't work for her. :( It's a small dent in the medical bills that were racked up, but it's a dent.

Apparently, there was a demonstration about the bailout today in Hollywood and from what I heard on the local radio news they were saying exactly what I said in my rant earlier.
-
I supped at Louise's and I'm so full right now. I had the half Louise's salad, which is not small but not as large as a large, I had one piece of bread (no butter), and I had the half order of their penne bolognese, which was excellent. So, given the long jog and the fact that it was my only food of the day, I'm thinkin' I'm fine. It really wasn't that much pasta and it was a red sauce with not that much pork and beef.
-
'night
-
According to my local paper online, the bailout deal fell through tonight.
-
The bailout is still evolving but however it evolves the result will be the same - the rich guys get richer and no one else benefits. The stupidity and volatility of these Wall Street manipulators should get what they deserve. They are the ones who have caused a major portion of this.
-
I was able to watch several more episodes of FRIDAY THE 13th. I have four left in the set. The last disc also has some sort of promotional pitch to stations who might have chosen to buy it.
-
I also finished CSI: NY from last night. It was a GREAT season premiere for the show. Lots of surprises and a wonderful guest performance from Elias Koteas.
-
I enjoyed UGLY BETTY's season premiere very much. I was dreading the thought of enduring Daniel's little jerky kid for the season, but looks like that's going to be toned down. Lindsay Lohan isn't much of an actress.
-
According to the news, the bailout deal has indeed fallen through.
I have just returned from seeing the DON GIOVANNI dress rehearsal at the Met with our DR Jose, whose a wonderful opera-going companion. I liked the cast, but I'm still wondering why actress Marthe Keller thinks she's an opera director. And why the Met thought she was right for Mozart.
-
And then I watched the two-hour GREY'S ANATOMY premiere. My goodness, lots of guest stars: Bernadette Peters, Kathy Baker, Mariette Hartley (in a really difficult part), Cliff DeYoung, and the introduction of the ever-gorgeous and hunky Kevin McKidd to the show.
But I hate the dye job they've given him! His strawberry blonde hair from ROME and JOURNEYMAN would have been so much more natural looking and attractive than this rusty red they've come up with.
-
Going to write for just a bit and then head downstairs to bed.
Good night!
-
Good Evening!
As DR elmore mentioned, we attended the dress rehearsal of Don Giovanni at The Metropolitan Opera earlier tonight. Even though it was the final dress, it was nice to see - well, to hear - that none of the singers were marking tonight. There were some truly beautiful voices filling that hall. As for the production itself, well, I'm still questioning some of the choices made by the director, and there were a few moments where I couldn't tell if something had gone wrong technically or if what I saw was on purpose. ;)

One of the "entertainment companies" I work for every now and then will be handling the shows for that ship. So, there's a chance I may get to see "Central Park" for myself sometime next year. :)

DR MattH - "Friday the 13th: The Series" did get better as it went along. I think it was during the second (or third?) season where they had this great multi-episode arc built around possession and Jack the Ripper. Some truly scary moments.

OH!
While I was walking from Lincoln Center down to Columbus Circle, I stopped into Starbucks for a post-Mozart-opera mocha. When I went to pick my drink, the barista asked if I was a pianist. Turns out she was an actress, and she remembered that I had played for her a few times over the past few years. She even knew my name. -Good for her! :)
-And I also happened to run into Matt Bogart too - who's looking as hunky as ever. He's about to go into Jersey Boys, and was coming back from watching tonight's performance. We had a nice catch-up in the rain, and I guess I'm going to see Jersey Boys again. :)

I hardly think holding an MBA from Harvard Business School qualifies as "economically unsophistacated".

Our ABC affiliate is having all sorts of technical problems, but only during Ugly Betty. The commercials seem to have no problem. ARG<>
It might have been Network - we were having intermediate drop outs here as well.

I enjoyed UGLY BETTY's season premiere very much. I was dreading the thought of enduring Daniel's little jerky kid for the season, but looks like that's going to be toned down. Lindsay Lohan isn't much of an actress.
AARRGGHH!! I got home and my DVR had the "your DVR is 100% filled...you have to delete something" message. :P I got home halfway through the episode and fortunately there was 15 minutes in the buffer, so I only missed the first 15 minutes. I'll watch the beginning once it's available on-line.

Let me know if that works. It's what I do, but I don't know if it makes a difference
It all worked out perfectly. All four shows recorded while I watched "Survivor" -- which was SPEC-TAC-U-LAR in Hi-Def!

I gotta tell you.

.. for me, it's like giving 700 billion dollars to people who lose their shirts in Vegas...
The proposed deal does not "give" money to anybody - the funds will be used to buy mortgage-based securities at a discount price; anyway you cut it, that financial paper has value - it contains the deeds of real estate all over country. Even if you presumed that the properties were worth only one half of their mortgage value, the treasury would ultimate regain over one half if its investment. Indeed, if the government held-on to the paper, and if over time the market rebounded, the government could even make a profit!

Or go bankrupt...and our savings with it.
It's a heinous deal...hinky in the extreme. And it DOES bail folks out....the government will have to figure out HOW to get its money back if the economy doesn't improve drastically/dramatically. All folks are demanding is that there will be a PROMISE of ensuring folks PAY their debts that won't be wriggled out of.

The stupidity and volatility of these Wall Street manipulators should get what they deserve. They are the ones who have caused a major portion of this.
The source of the problem was overerly agressive borrowing by unqalified home buyers - Wall Street was not involved; blame the naive buyers and the overly optomistic banks/mortgage companies. Second level blame goes to the financial institutions (mainly Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) who then purchased those mortgages, bundled them into complex financial packages and peddled them to major investment houses who later sold them to Pension Plans, Mutual Funds, and Insurance Companies - and it is these folks who are holding most of the bag today.

Should the deal proceed, the Government could first un-wind the fiscal instruments and sort out the mortgages into categories - still "working", in danger of default, and in-default. The working mortgages would continue to generate, by repayment with interest, a revenue stream for the government. The "In Danger of Default" mortgages could be re-negotiated to give current owners terms that fit their means - lower interest rates and shared future equity would work magic. The "in-default" properties couls be reclaimed and held for resale at fair market prices (thus avoiding distress sales that lower the entire market). However, for this scheme to be successful, we need a new agency under strict General Acounting Office/Congressional oversight.

Wall Street is inextricably linked to everything inasmuch as it's the stock failures of those institutions that the "bailout" will help salvage. The daily trading here and around the world is as much the heart of the "financial community" as any individual company. When Wall Street crashes, the economy goes with it. And ask yourself why these institutions are in trouble now? They were riding a wave of inflated stocks that were soaring with mortgage loans, etc., etc., that, when markers began to be called in, the consumers -- the uneducated masses living head and shoulders above their income means -- could not pay. Panic ensued and here we are. Yes, "institutions" failed due to poor management. But do not for one minute think Wall Street is an innocent bystander. This bailout will most definitely have an impact on trading and the Dow Jones.
Whoever it was who first decided to sell the idea that the housing market was vastly undervalued and then saw it become horrifically overvalued is, ultimately, the one to blame. There are basic levels of blame and there are complex levels of blame. Brokers, mortgage companies/lenders, consumers and stock traders are ALL IN IT together.
And of course, those of us who sit by and watch are the ones who will pay.

That's what I was trying to say, but you said it better. Anyone who thinks Wall Street has nothing to do with this just doesn't want to see what's going on. And, as always, it's the rich who will benefit from this - the players, the gamblers, who know what the risks of the market are but who just keep getting richer and richer because of things like this - the rich speculators and manipulators never pay the piper - it's the not rich who do.
-

I never said it didn't - I said that Wall Street was not involved at the "first instance" - the over-extension of credit to individual home buyers.
Yes, the rich will get richer - as they have since the heydays of Babylon.

Well, the Grandlads' day-care provider is a fine example. She and her husband buy a house they can ill afford, banking on the assurances of the local broker that increased values will let them refinance later. Sure enough, values went up, they got a rediculous re-appraisal, borrowed more and went on a luxury spending spree. Thay have seven kids and not one cent put away for college - "the government will pay for it". She uses WIC, gets Food Stamps and spends money on tanning salon appointments. Her major souce of income is a big Social Security Survior's Benefit check she gets for a son from a previous marriage. They kid will soon reach 18 and the money will stop. Not one thin dime of the many thousands of dollars he received were placed in a savings account. She and her husband have never felt any obligation to consider there ability to provide before procreating - Dad thinks more kids make him seem manly.
