Title: THE TENTH MONTH
Post by: bk on October 01, 2008, 11:52:20 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were all that you could read because this here board wasn't working, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be as soon as they enter the new site address.

And the word of the day is: SLUGABED!

Wednesday afternoon greetings!  What a weird day - no online catalog here at work, no phones, very slow email, and, worst of all, no HHW!

So, is this our new look?

Well, I'm here and confused by all these here changes.  Are they temporary, or is this the new look?  If it is the NEW LOOK, I like Dior's "New Look" back in about 1947 better.

Well, I guess we're back online.  :)

Is there a box to type a post without using the reply link?

This is going to take a bit of getting used to.

Yes, this is the new look, I guess.  We'll get used to it.  We didn't even have avatars when it first went up, but that's working.  Bakalor, over the next few days, will try to restore some of the missing links.  Meanwhile, we're back and I missed you all terribly and it's been a rather wretched three hours of the morning dealing with this non-stop.

Apparently, the quick reply box is no longer with us, although Bakalor will check to see if he needs to change a code or something.

So, since the TOD is "ask bk" - hows about sharing the "Cheese Puff" recipe?   :)  :)

Title: Re: THE TENTH MONTH
Post by: bk on October 01, 2008, 12:38:37 PM
It doesn't look THAT different.  We're missing the links to the other parts of the site, but those are all on the home page where the notes are, and that address and software is the same.  And we're missing the quick reply box - Bakalor has looked for the setting, but can't find it - he'll look again later, but it may have been done away with for this version of this software.  I'm going to ask on the software site.  If anyone notices anything else that's weird, let me know and I'll pass it along to Bakalor.  Just remember how weird it was when we first got the board.

Good afternoon, all! I'm happy to know it isn't my Mac, which has been acting up quite a bit on Firefox this morning. I had to reboot it twice.

I slept very badly last night, but I mustered my energies, got to the pharmacy to drop off two prescriptions, walked back from 68th Street, stopped at the market and bought two bags' worth of groceries for $75.88! Oy.

Now, back to proofing.

I gotta tell you.  One weird thing is that when I make a post it takes me back outside to the topics.  Don't like that.

Ooooh!  It looks like a Yuko message board. . .
I dunno.  I  suppose we will get used to it.
Change is always weird when unexpected.
Let's see, I've done laundry, had breakfast, went grocery shopping, uploaded some photos, cleaned out unnecessary files on my computer and have finally arrived here.

ASK BK DAY QUERY:  Remember that other game we used to play on and off, the one where we wrote a story?  Maybe we could do that on some Mondays now that initials have gone away. . .

Weird that the only place you can see who's on the board is now at the bottom of the home page of the board.

Title: Re: THE TENTH MONTH
Post by: bk on October 01, 2008, 01:17:00 PM
I posted on the software message board and got an immediate response - so I've forwarded that to Bakalor and hopefuly he'll have time to do what they're suggesting, and that will get us our Quick Reply box back and when we post we won't be taken back to the topic, but we'll stay within the posts as we used to, if that makes sense.

BK bans political speech, the Dow tanks, and the old Board disappears.  Mere coincidence?  I think not!

I find it most unseemly that the new Board has a "Go Down" hyperlink.
Title: Re: THE TENTH MONTH

I'm also not getting "new" posts occasionally, like when I just logged on it should have shown me there was a "new" post from JMK but it didn't.  It has earlier.  Weird.

Obviously stuff to fix.  Apparently some people are logging on, posting once, and then getting an error message which then doesn't allow them to post or do anything.  I've forwarded all this stuff to Bakalor and I've been asking questions on the software site.  We'll get it right, please don't get frustrated or weirded out.  If you're getting frustrated just think of me this morning for three hours straight!

Title: Re: THE TENTH MONTH
Post by: bk on October 01, 2008, 03:00:31 PM
Sorry a million times.  Mark has, I believe, left where he was, so he won't be able to help until later, if then.  Clearly something is still off.  He needs to see a screencap of what's wrong.  Can someone send me one so he can see it?  Both he and I see the "reply" button.  I've also had a PM from a guy on the software board who's willing to help for some small dough, so I'm waiting for him to write me back and since he's an expert, he can probably get it all fixed up.

Mark is on the board and he's trying really hard to figure all this out.  Meanwhile, I have yet to hear back from the software board guy who offered to help fix things.
Title: Re: THE TENTH MONTH
Post by: bk on October 01, 2008, 05:00:53 PM
Well, I'm going to presume we are screwed for this evening.  I'm sorry.  This guy who offered help keeps sending messages through the software board, but never gets to me directly even though I've asked him to four times - plus he never says how we'll proceed.  I've just spent another fifty bucks (on top of what I spent this morning to do the upgrade) to become a Charter Member of the software site, and I've opened a ticket outlining our problems and made it a priority ticket - we'll see how fast they get back to me.

I've heard back from the software company people - I gave them the password and username and I guess they'll go in and try to figure it out.  Webhost wasn't willing to do it but sent me their thoughts on what it might be and I've forwarded that to Bakalor and the software people.  Fingers crossed.

Good evening (an Alfred Hitchcock reference)!

Nice to be back home after not being able to access the board. I'm SO sorry for all this trouble as I know it's driving you mad, bk.

Obviously, it was back on this afternoon but I only wised up and checked the notes page to get bk's update or I would have gone to bed thinking everything was still broken.

So, got a message from the guy at the software company - he's adjusted something and asked people who were unable to post more than once to try again.  He hasn't been able to find anything else, but will do a more in-depth look tomorrow morning if we're still having this problem.

Post by: George #2 on October 01, 2008, 09:36:14 PM
Okay, this is really George.  Once I made my first post this morning, all the links and buttons to reply, quote, modify, etc., disappeared.  It was as if I could post only once, and then never again.  And I noticed that each person has only posted once.  Also, I couldn't view anyone's profile, not even mine!  However, when I logged out, I could view profiles.  How weird is that??  So, I created this new screen name to see what happens when a new profile is created in the new board.  We'll see!!

I also cannot view any profiles, if I click on someones name  I get a message saying : Apologies you cannot view just anyone's profile"  if I click on my own name I get the message :"Apologies you cannot view your own profile"

I just tried re-registering and there were the buttons at the bottom, I see George  and I have been working alongthe same lines at the same time

It's clear there is a problem - everyone can post once and that's it.  Except for Mark and I, because we're mods.  Something needs to be switched on somewhere in the permissions, and I guess a perfunctory look-see by the software guy didn't reveal anything to him.  He said he'd take an in-depth look in the morning, and I've sent him a few of your comments so he knows exactly what's going on.  We'll just have to hang tight, I'm afraid.  Bakalor is obviously gone for the evening and it is doubtful he'll do anything further tonight.  I'm hoping by morning we'll be fixed.

This is great information and I've passed it along - the bottom line is I think they'll fix it so the old usernames work, but for now the new usernames seem to be working fine.  I've alerted them that posting takes you back to the Daily Discussions page - I had that problem this morning but Mark was able to fix it - at least for he and I.

I do laugh at the "Warning - while you were reading a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post" that comes up.

Try modifying your profile there is a button onthe side that let's you change the way the forum look sto you .. you can make that message go away

BK, the reply, quote, modify buttons are still here!  I hope we don't all have to create new profiles to be able to use this new board, but it seems to work.

I am having exactly the same experience.. here George... maybe that's the solution we all need new profiles... I'm not happy about that solution but that may be the one we're stuck with

At least all of our old posts are still there.

Hey!  We can quote within a quote again! :D

Is this a quote within a quote within a quote?

Hey!  When you update your profile, there are some options...under "Look and Layout Preferences," there's a list of boxes that can be checked and a couple are:

Return to topics after posting by default

and

Don't warn on new replies made while posting.

and near the bottom, a box with the option

Use quick reply on topic display with a dropdown box and the options:
"Don't show at all"
"Show, off by default"
"Show, on by default"

I tried to go back and log in under Cillaliz to see if I could modify the profile, but it gave it's apologies and said I couldn't view my own profile. It sounds to me like there may be a setting in the software somewhere that doesn't let anyone other than admin post or view/change profiles

Well... I finally tried the "Shroom Burger" at Shake Shacke (http://www.shakeshacknyc.com/).  YUM!  It may be their vegetarian offering, but I think it probably contains more fat than their burgers do - it's a crisp-fried portabello mushroom, with a "molten" center of cheddar and muenster cheeses.  Ooey-gooey goodness!

*Oh, and the Featured Frozen Custard Flavor for Wednesdays in October is "Apple Rosemary".  Very good.  At first I thought the rosemary was a bit underwhelming, but then I realized it was just the right amount of herbal note.  Any more, and it truly would have been overwhelming.

The server upgrade is not a cost.  I pay a yearly hosting fee and all upgrades are covered.  The cost of the web host to actually do the board upgrade for me was not too horrendous, about seventy-five bucks.  Still, add to that the seventy-five dollar Charter Member fee for the software site and it was an expensive little day.

Where in tarnation IS everyone?  Well, hopefully by morning we will either have more new registered usernames, or we'll be able to go back to our old ones.

I'm making a CD compilation that's going to be used in a week and a half for my work's All Staff Training Day.  And I'm watching some shows that I've recorded on my DVR.  I need to make sure I watch what I've recorded and then delete them because on Friday, my sister, her boyfriend, my niece and I are all going to Oregon to visit our cousin and his wife!  We'll be gone from Friday morning until Monday evening and I don't want the DVR to run out of room while I'm gone.  Also, I probably won't have computer access the whole time!  I think I might go through HHW withdrawal!  I'll also need to make sure I bring my script for "Loot" with me.  I hope I have time to read through it a few times. ;)
