Post by: bk on October 30, 2008, 12:01:52 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes smelled like peat moss and Pete Moss, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're grazing on the grass with peat moss.

Here's a great mid-1950s shot of the Bruin in Westwood - some years later our very own dear reader Jane would be working there.

Finally, here's the Vogue Theater in Hollywood, in its heyday circa 1965 - this theater features in my short story The Book Scout.  And, of course, next door is our favorite, Musso and Frank.  And as a point of interest, I saw What's New, Pussycat about fifteen times at the Vogue.

Good morning, all!  I was out of bed around 6:30 because I have to be out of the apartment by 8 am: I'm gettng my hair cut at 9 at Rockefeller Center, then I have several hours at Toyland, folowed by physical therapy.  After that, it's back here for more work on THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.

I'm officially on the DR FJL/Skip Kennon roster for Thanksgiving and very very happy about it. They've got the best salon going for 21st Century Manhattan, and I look forward to seeing friends and making the acquaintance of new ones.

Right now I've got to put together my traveling snack of sliced apples and walnuts and almonds, which should tide me over till I get home for some lunch, which will most likely be tuna salad. Tonight will be steamed vegtables and chicken over brown rice. It's gonna be a tasty day.

Does anyone know what's wrong with the buysoundtrax.com? I tried to buy the LAURETTE Kritzerland recording yesterday since BK said he was sold out and they claimed to have it. Only Paypal said they couldn't accept money at the present time and buysountrax has not responded to my inquiry about the problem.

So yesterday was interesting...

we have been very slow at work for the past several months -  teh boss has decided that he cannot afford to keep going this way (makes senses) but didn't want to lay anyone off... So

he has cut all of us to P/T status - 32 hours a week - 4 days

fortunately I know someone who needs someone one day a week - at least temporarily, so I will be working there once a week

Also the mamogram place called me because I had not yet made an appointment for the followup sonogram they wanted -   I explained that since the doctor was only availbale  10 - 4  M - F and that I work 9 - 5:30  M - F I was trying to figure out when I could get there especially since the  recent turn of events means I cannot take time off and still get paid - and said I would call back for an appointment

About a half hour late she called me back and said the doctor "really" wants to see me and that she would come in on this Saturday if I would....

Ok now I'm a little more nervous - and yes I'm going to be there on Saturday

Then the dentist called me---  remember last week with the impression fiasco?  Well in the midst of it, the dentist made note of the enlarged gland on my neck - I've had it for a while and haven't really paid attention to it - it doesn't hurt and it hasn't bothered me in anyway.

At the time she suggested that I go see my regular GP and have him have a look at it.

Well she called yesterday to see if I had gone to see the doctor yet.   I told her no and she said that I should go and see my doctor 'Right away" and that I should make sure he also checked the inside of my throat right where the lump is on the outside.

The she called me again an hour later to see if I had made the appointment - (I had - I'll be there at 9:15  before my 11:00 at the mammogram place)

VIBES of all sort are hereby requested

Here is my niece Emily with Ms Lynda Carter, friend of MR BK.

Her husband owns the software company where Emily and her husband work - they have just released a new video game about the destruction of Washington D.C.

Ms Carter is often at the facility and I couldn't remember if MR BK produced a Lynda Carter cd or just knows her in general.  Emily said Lynda is very nice and even more beautiful than photos suggest.

DR JRand - Where was that picture taken?  I'm just wondering about the young woman in the background holding the "Jell-O SHOT".  -I still remember having one of those down at Disney's Pleasure Island.  ;)

*And I believe the ads for "Fallout 3" in the DC Metro have been causing some unease and concern among the ridership.  Seeing depictions of the Capitol in ruins is not exactly what wants to see when getting off the Red Line.

"Heist" movies?

Not one of my favorite genres.  [Too limited]

The only one that comes to mind that I rather like is HEIST by David Mamet.  It stars my favorite "living," albeit retired, actor: Gene Hackman.

I'm going to be working on SUNSET BOULEVARD today. I can't wait to do an A/B comparison between the original release and this new one to see if there are actually any differences.

Because there are so many bonus features on the second disc (though they may be only a few minutes long each) and tonight is a heavy TV night, I may not finish it until tomorrow morning.

No rush. The disc doesn't come out until November 11th.

I recall seeing a movie in the distant past about someone stealing a valuable painting.  The theft was to be accomplished some sort of bizarre Rube Goldburg type of contraption, which replaced the original canvas with a counterfit.  I'm pretty sure it was a comedy but I can't recall any of the cast or the title.  Anyone have any ideas?

I had something kind of cool happen yesterday, but it's a bit of a tale to get to the punchline.  I have programmed an Oratorio for December 21 at the church I music direct for.  We had the choral octavios, but not the orchestral parts, so I called Sheet Music Service here in PDX and was told the orchestration was $150 (!!--usually these things are about $60).  Anyhoo, I cleared that I had that much in my music account and placed the order, waited three weeks, they finally called, and I went in with my little church check and picked up the music.  I was on my way out of the store with the packet under my arm when the saleslady said, "Oh wait!  I need to print you an invoice--you have a balance due!"  "Balance due?" I asked in shock.  "That score is $250," she replied.  I told her I had been quoted $150, which was bad enough, and there was no way I was going to pay $250.  I walked back, set the score down and literally ripped the church check off of her clipboard, thanked them and left.

I then decided maybe I'd just get the accompaniment CD, went to the publisher's site and was shocked to see that it was $80!  $80 for a CD, can you believe it?  So I alerted the church orchestra and office that I would simply program an orchestral piece and have just piano accompaniment for the Oratorio.

So I went in to the music library last night to start sorting through orchestral scores.  There's this huge bookcase on wheels in there full of stuff that's just been thrown in on shelves for years and years and I went through everything and sorted it by instrumentation, etc.  I was about to leave and a little voice said "look behind the bookshelves," so I lugged this huge piece of furniture out away from the wall and, lo and behold, there were stacks of music behind there that had obviously been there for years, all covered in dust and in various states of disarray.

And what should be in the pile?  You guessed it--the orchestral parts and conductor's score for the Oratorio.  :)

Was that the longest story ever?

BK the "flu" you described also did not sound like the flu to me. It just sounded like a really bad cold/cough.  It's still possible that the 10 people you knew passed around this bug, whatever it was, and that it was not the actual flu.

To me the flu usually has a fever. Also, since you were able to jog every single day ... that also made me think it might not be the flu (since i seriously doubt you would have been able to get out of bed).

Just out of curiosity... Which Oratorio?  Something Classical? or a bit more Contemporary?

*Steve has become quite adept at finding scores and parts and MIDI files for Bach, Mozart, Haydn, etc., choral works on the web.  They help save him a lot of time when he's preparing the rehearsal CDs.  However, he's sort of surprised that no one has yet to consolidate a lot of those free - and public domain - resources in one place.  -Well, he hasn't come across that "place" if it already exists.

I awoke early this morning, and woke up the computer.  It would not load the Safari homepage well - finally did after about two minutes.  Then I couldn't get anywhere on the Internet (yes, wireless was working fine).  So, I quit out of Safari, opened it and the same thing,  wouldn't load the home page.  I restarted the computer only to get a blank gray screen.  I shut it down, restarted, same thing.  Had to call Apple Care.  They had me unplug everything, remove the battery, then put it back and plug back in.  Then they had me restart by holding down the option and Apple keys along with the "p" and "r" keys.  This is not that easy because the p and r keys are very far apart and first you have to tap the power button then immediately hold down all four keys - you hold the keys until you hear TWO of the Apple start up sounds, then you let go.  That worked, and I got the Apple logo and everything was fine.  Occasionally, the system hiccups, they say, and starting up this way resets everything.  So, here I am.  Then I got a call from the printer who told me that as of yesterday he hadn't gotten an approval on our booklet.  Thankfully, he'd talked to the designer who had in fact sent his approval first thing Monday.  Unbelievable.  So, we're three days behind on the printing, but he's telling me that the latest it will get to the pressing plant is next Wednesday, which means they should be able to still get me CDs by the 10th.  I asked him to try and get the print there by Monday or Tuesday so that I'm not quite so up against the wall with the pressing plant, and he said he'd do his best.  And that's been my morning so far.  It looks a little gray and chilly out.

JMK, what was your question?

I was curious about your two latest CD releases and how you obtain rights for something like that--do you deal with the Estates?  Or is it PD stuff that was never properly copyrighted?  And if you do need to negotiate, do you do it yourself or have an attorney handle it?  Details, man, we want details.  :)

Just out of curiosity... Which Oratorio?  Something Classical? or a bit more Contemporary?

*Steve has become quite adept at finding scores and parts and MIDI files for Bach, Mozart, Haydn, etc., choral works on the web.  They help save him a lot of time when he's preparing the rehearsal CDs.  However, he's sort of surprised that no one has yet to consolidate a lot of those free - and public domain - resources in one place.  -Well, he hasn't come across that "place" if it already exists.

No, it's a contemporary piece by John Purifoy--no great shakes, but a good midlevel piece that my choir and orchestra can handle.

I personally create MIDI files for all of the choral stuff we do so that they can rehearse whenever they want.  I've been doing that for years for my Pops Choir and church choirs I've worked with.  They all love it.

TOD Mystery:

I recall seeing a movie in the distant past about someone stealing a valuable painting.  The theft was to be accomplished some sort of bizarre Rube Goldburg type of contraption, which replaced the original canvas with a counterfit.  I'm pretty sure it was a comedy but I can't recall any of the cast or the title.  Anyone have any ideas?

Was it HOW TO STEAL A MILLION with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole?

Yes, DR Matt!  After reading the synopsis on imdb I am sure that is the picture!  Thanks!  I need to see this one again.

TOD:  How to Steal a Million is one of my favorites.  It was the first movie I'd seen at a newly built luxury theatre (at the time), and the scenery and locations and actors (nad John Willimas' score) put me in movie heaven.

The plot you describe is not this movie though.  He uses a boomerang to get them to shut off the burglar alarm system and steals a sculpture.

TOD:  Would the Pink Panther movies be considered Heist films?

A not-so-great movie which I liked was "Rough Cut" with Burt Reynolds and Lesley-Anne Down.  It was on cable a lot for a few years.  I guess I associate it with some good times.

Different for every release.  Evening Primrose, the deal was with Sondheim and his lawyer, and yes I did it myself because it was very simple.  The two Herrmann titles are in the public domain - I just happened to have the best source materials anywhere in the world.  Of course, we pay the publishing on these titles, too.

So replacing a painting with a forgery (or vice-versa) doesn't happen in HTSAM?  I though that this might be it because I thought I recalled an older character and I thought that it might have been Charles Boyer.

Charles Boyer was in HTSAM, but it was a statue they stole (although forged paintings are part of the plot, too).
You're right abuot much of this, but I think you've got some plot devices from something else mixed up.  Interesting though, since some of what you describe that isn't part of HTSAM sounds familiar to me too.

By "high-tech" I meant that its "R" factor is quite high, so we will hopefully be noticing a warm-up down in the Rec Room.  It's a neat little door with a built-in screened window, so we can jettison our completely decrepit old wooden screen door, which was probably circa 1956 (and looked like it).  Of course I am circa 1956, but am youthful and vibrant.  ;)

I did get shot while Sherlock waited in the car.  So far just a slightly, very normal, ache in my arm.  The guy who gave me the injection said if I do have something more than allergies going on the vaccination could make it worse.  I decide that could be good it whatever I have progressed enough so it could go away.

Paramount also ported over from the previous 2002 release the audio commentary by Ed Sikov who wrote a biography of Billy Wilder. The commentary is OK, but he runs out of anecdotes long before the picture is over and is reduced to merely describing what we're seeing on the screen or what is to come.

The way I see it, we have the Hickson in 4:3, and the McEwan is beautifully presented at 16:9 anamorphic with gorgeous production values and sharp photography.  Since the story IS so familiar, it's nice to look at a different perspective.  Ultimately, it all works out in the end.

We went through hell to get my Mother's name properly added to my father's military gravestone (that's how they do it in military cemeteries--the spouse is listed on the same gravestone).  It took us three tries (each carved in granite, no less), plus several calls to the semi-lovely Orrin Hatch's office to get it solved.  My mother hated Orrin Hatch, he sat next to her at the dedication of my father's museum and she came back and told me, "If that G-ddamned Orrin Hatch had patted my knee one more time, I would have socked him in the mouth."  There are times I miss my Mother.   ;D

Carved in granite first!  It sounds like a nice gravestone.

Ours is a stupid pop-out plaque at an outrageous price.  It hasn't helped the mail from California is so darn slow.  When I first called abut the incorrect sample, the guy handling this at the cemetery took a photo of Dad's so we could compare them.  Unfortunately he couldn't figure out how to email said photo, delaying this process even longer.  I sent a copy of the photo with my changes.

We all find it too sad to go to the cemetery without the plaque there, sort of silly I suppose.

This morning Keith went to a podiatrist & got a cortisone shot in his foot-ouch.  It appears he has plantar fasciitis.  It should last about 12 weeks (he waited a month to see the podiatrist).  He is back to using cold packs, has stretches to do, & it is taped for 10 days.  If it doesn’t improve he will go for physical therapy.

I hiked while Keith was getting injected, then we met at the pharmacy to get our flu shots, I then shopped while he came home to continue working on the mover, in a dust bowl, picking up leaves.  He has been doing this almost non-stop for a week now. :(

So no one knows anything about a buysoundtrax.com problem with Paypal or anything else?

It just worked; I ordered LAURETTE!

GREAT!  I don't, as a rule, use BuySoundTrax for anything other than their signed-by-the-composer releases.  Thus far, I've been extremely fortunate to have had only good experiences with them whereas many others who buy from them experience significant delays in receiving items purchased...sometimes for as much as up to a year (if the posts I've read at FilmScoreMonthly Messageboard are truthful).

Thanks for the information, though. I haven't ordered from them before so I was surprised by the Paypal glitch ysterday. Today there was no problem at all. Go figure.

Does anybody there know anything about FAX machines?

I've got an HP psc 2210.

Earlier today, we had a brief power outage, then a major power surge when the electicity came back on.

It cost me $185.00 to get my Mac up and running again, but my FAX appears to be "fried".

All the green lights on it are flashing on-and-off.  I unpluged it for a couple hours, but when I pluged it back in, it was the same thing.

It looks like I'm going to have to buy a new one (cheaper than getting it repaired)...unless somebody can suggest some remedy that I'm not aware of.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Aw, thanks.  And back to Keith too.  Luckily my doctor gave me a choice of giving me the shot (or nothing), but warned what a shot in the foot would feel like.  I asked him to let me think about it while we discussed other things and decided to go for it.  It wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it'd be.

Title: Re: PEAT MOSS AND PETE MOSS
Post by: Kerry on October 30, 2008, 06:04:32 PM
My doctor told it would hurt today, but that by Saturday it should be fine.  He also told me that the cortisone itself would feel like a bump under my heel (and hurt) for about 2 days.  Luckily, that part seems just fine (although I could tell what he meant when I walked out his office).  I had some other issues with my ankle that couldn't be taken care of as quickly, so I opted for the cortisone because I felt I'd make more progress on that right away (so I could deal with the other stuff as it came along-- one probelm wiped out; right?).

BTW, how are YOU feeling?

I had a cortisone shot once for bursitis.  I think the doctor put it in the wrong spot, plus I was greatly improved by then & there were better options for treating it.  The result of the shot was my bursitis was considerably worst than before I went to the doctor.  We had just moved into the area & when I would tell anyone what happened, they immediately asked if I went to Dr..... and they were all correct.  Seems his reputation proceeded him.

Then I headed up to Church Hill to meet up with my friend, Mike, for dinner.  We actually headed back down to Shockoe Bottom to eat at Sette (http://www.settepizza.com/).  I had the Grilled Caesar Salad (they grill, lightly char the romaine), and a Pizza Rustica, and Mike had the Wild Mushroom Pizza.  It was pretty good pizza.  Sette opened after I left Richmond, but I had been hearing and reading about it for a while.  It was good to know that the place lived up to it's reputation. ;)

*It was also great catching up with Mike too.  I had forgotten that he works with "Senior Populations" at MCV (Medical College of Virginia), and he was the perfect person for me to vent to in regards to my parents' current health situation, matters.  He also "confirmed" that the quasi-denial that my Mom is going through is "normal".  Doesn't necessarily make it right, but it does make it easier to accept.

This is nice, and so sad it is needed:

The Hudson-King Foundation for Families of Slain Victims is named in honor of the singer-actress's slain mother Darnell Hudson Donerson, brother Jason Hudson and nephew Julian King.

"The specific purpose of the Foundation is to care for the needs of families who have lost relatives to a violent crime," the family says in a statement. "This encompasses their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter as well as grief counseling."

Donations to the Hudson-King Foundation can be sent:

Love the photos, DR JOSE.  I clicked around and the Fall album was the only one I could find.  So everything else is still verboten.

Again... WHEW!  ;)

I plan on some LEAF photo taking next week.  We still have lots of green mixed in, but the frost today and the warm temps for the next few days should speed us along.

After dinner, I headed back over to VCU hoping to catch one of my former professors since he's currently in rehearsal for the upcoming show.  Well, it turned out that tonight was the first night of tech.  I did get to see him, albeit briefly, but I'm sure I'll be back again to see the show - and to see him again too.

And since I was at VCU, I decided to check out what was going on West Avenue.  West Avenue is a two-block long street right on the edge of the VCU campus.  Basically, it's a street of "showcase homes".  During the spring, there is usually a "West Avenue House Tour", and during the holidays, there is bound to be some "competition" going on between the households.  Halloween is no exception.  ;)

This was the "new" Marple that I watched, and I was so dissatisfied with the changes that I have never watched another one. I know the new ones have fans on this site, but I'm not one of them. Of course, my opinion IS based on just one effort, probably not fair, but I just couldn't stomach this new version which I was so used to the Hickson versions.

Is your objection mainly to the story-doctoring, or do you not like McEwan's portrayal.

der Brucer

I did not like the changes to the characterization of Marple going so far away from the Agatha Christie books as to make her all but unrecognizable. So, the writing is what turned me off. McEwan did what she could with the material she was handed. I just thought the material unworthy of its source.

Is that due to the cuts they made to the show to bring it under the three hour mark?

I compared the new SB to the 2002 version. They appear to be from the same master quite frankly though since the new one is on a disc by itself, the bitrate is much higher and thus the image is much more solid and stable.

Tonight's UGLY BETTY should be the awful Lindsay Lohan's penultimate appearance. I will not be sad to see her go. Betty has plenty of opposition and conflict at work. She doesn't need another enemy that she's constantly sparring with.

Nice new storylines building with Hilda's work license and Daniel's "secret" at Meade Publishing.

Nice to see Marc's boy friend back even for only a brief scene.

GREY'S ANATOMY had interesting parallel stories. And great to have Kevin McKidd back.

And I had to laugh at the number of times they felt the need to assure viewers that no animals were harmed in filming the show.

Instead of hopping on the 7:00am bus tomorrow morning back to NYC, I'm going to head up to Northern Virginia with Steve for a day of shopping.  He's been wanting to make an IKEA run, as well as possibly a Tysons Corner run, so, he took the day off and asked if I'd like to come along.  And I will.

And then I will just grab a bus from DC back to NYC tomorrow night after dinner.  -Which is much more civilized than getting on the 1:00am bus early(!) Saturday morning.  :)

We have a similar campaign here in AZ  (Prop 102-- most definitely vote NO-- that is, IMHO).   It's already on the books defining what marriage is (which is not MY definition), but the little pigs want to amend the Constitution too.  This same Proposition failed the last time (they got too piggy, and it backfired on them), and we for once were progressive enough to vote it down.  I am afraid to say that of about 15 similar ballots around the country, we were the only state to defeat the Prop.  Arizona then!  Who'da thunk it?

My big problem with Body in the Library was the change in the denouement.  The "repurposing" of Marple was bothersome, yes, but the "new" ending was just silly and unneeded.

Hooray!  The "designer" I've liked least the entire competition FINALLY got his due with elimination.  His ego knows no bounds and his style is a bit matronly.  Small wonder he's style editor for "Martha Stewart Living".  Still....if Martha was watching she might want a new style editor because his is decidedly "twee".   IMO, of course.

Back from rehearsal, which was amazing and not in a good way, and then Happy Days, which was amazing and not in a good way.  In fact, the only upside of my afternoon and evening was grabbing a hamburger at Wendy's next door to the theater.  I haven't had a Wendy's burger in twenty years - I'd forgotten how tasty it is.  I had a little Caesar salad with it, which was fine.

Since I'm not going to talk about the rehearsal in the notes, I can only tell you that the singer had a melt down for personal reasons and I had to play therapist and cheerleader - I don't mind doing the latter but the former is not my thing and certainly not my thing for the pittance I agreed to help this person for.  I should never have said yes.  I'm hoping she'll come in positive and ready to work tomorrow at noon - if it turns into what it turned into today, I'll leave.

And since I won't go into detail about Happy Days in the notes I will only tell you that it was excruciatingly bad, worse than I could have imagined and for very interesting reasons.  The score is horrible, the actors are all fine, the direction is amateur, and the choreography, while busy and energetic, is unfocused and uninteresting.  But it's the story and the script - does Mr. Marshall not remember what made his show a success?  Hint: It wasn't just the Fonz.  The leads in the musical are Fonzie and Pinky Tuscadero (the worst character ever on the TV series).  Richie disappears for half the first act, and he really has nothing much to do with the show.  Well, note to everyone: Happy Days was a hit not only because the audience loved the Fonz, but because they loved the heart and soul of the show - Richie (Ron Howard).
