Well, you've read the notes, the notes did it better, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they know very well that nobody moos it better.

A word Sondheim considered, and then discarded from a Boca Raton lyric for ROAD SHOW?

Michael Kuchwara, AP Drama Critice has kind word s for ROAD SHOW (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081119/ap_en_ot/theater_review_road_show_2)

Quote
But persistence has paid off, at least for the show's creators. They have put together a small show about big ideas, an intelligent, fascinating examination of the American psyche, both good and bad.

The Brantley NY Times review, while trying hard to be respectful, was pretty flat out negative.

Well,  BLOOMBERG'S (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601088&sid=aAVP1bQjw4co) John Simon pulled no punches:

Quote

...
Now back in New York, this much-traveled ``Road Show'' directed by Britain's John Doyle is said by its creators to be the best version yet. Which only goes to show how wrong creators can be.

Choreography, such as it is, is appropriately credited to nobody, while Ann Hould-Ward's costumes and Jane Cox's lighting are satisfactory enough. Best of all are Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations, worth a good deal more attention than the dialogue.

"Road Show'' is unable to make the Mizners as fascinating as they doubtless were. It remains a seriously ailing proposition for which Doyle has served as overeager gravedigger.

After that, I'm back here to finish up the 37 cartons for tomorrow's Fed Ex. I may see a movie with my friend Val tonight, so I'll call her from the office and confirm it.

So, I'm outa here.

Sony® Blu-ray Disc™ High-Definition DVD Player
Quote
See the world in high-definition. Blu-ray delivers 1080p, which is sharper than ordinary DVD, and enhances the playback of standard DVDs by upconverting their video resolution to HDTV-compliant 720p, 1080i, or 1080p via the HDMI™ connection. Audio features Dolby® Digital/DTS® 5.1-channel output. Multiformat CD/DVD playback. Includes remote.

this is probably a dumb question, and I suspect I know the answer - is there any point in getting a bluray dvd player if I don't have a HDTV?

I jsut was notified by by credit card company that I have enough "points" to get the above Sony blu ray -  Matt H, what are your thoughts?

I hope someone gifts you with a working printer... how are you making the church programs and newsletters and everything without a printer?

The two-year-old printer works still, but it needs some maintenance parts. Kinda like how my 18-year old Honda runs fine, but it needs belts and hoses and oil.

We have found that when someone gifts a church with a printer/copier/fax machine, it is because it breaks down a lot.

It was making a buzzing noise, as if a very large mosquito was inside it. That's when I called for service and they discovered they cannot get parts.

I'm planning to get a large screen HDTV TV when I move to Texas in March, but I'm going to hold-off getting a Blu-Ray player.

It may be getting a lot of push now by the studios but, in today's economy, I'm not convinced that Blu-Ray is going to be anything more than a flash in the pan...and I have a couple of friends who own Home Entertainment stores that agree with me.

Yes, Blu-Ray may look a bit better than your regular DVD, but, for me, I don't think that the difference is so great that I want to upgrade.

SABRINA?

Maybe it's because I'm a Bogart fan, but I've always enjoyed this movie, even though, I agree with BK, it isn't Wilder's best.

Certainly it's a lot better than the totally unnecessary remake with Harrison Ford.

According to what I've read, SABRINA was not a happy set...mainly because of Bogart.

He was aware than Wilder had wanted Cary Grant for his role, but Cary was not avaialble.

I guess that Bogie didn't like being second choice, so he did a lot of grumbling, both on the set and publicly.  I recall that he made some sort of statement, complaining that Audrey Hepburn needed "20" takes (don't recall the exact number) to get a scene right.

In later years, Holden, when asked about Bogart, said "I hated the son-of-a-bitch!"

Perhaps the problems on the set come through on the screen?

What model is that, the 300?

Anyway, without an HDTV, you'd see no real differences to speak of. The machine would be downconverting 1080p transfers so your 480i TV could display it. I don't see the point.

Better to save your pennies and get an HDTV. They're really quite reasonable now, especially last year's 720p models in smaller sizes. I priced an RCA 32" LCD HDTV last week for $399. Other brands cost more but there are deals to be had.

I try not to remember all the angst on the set when I watch Sabrina.  And how on earth Bogart couldn't like Hepburn is beyond my imagination.  Maybe that tension added worked, you really believe he wasn't happy when he fell in love with her-lol.

With that sized screen, you most definitely see a difference between DVD and Blu-ray. And not just in sharpness either. But the depth and richness of color is enhanced because of the wider spectrum offered by Blu-ray/1080p transfers.

The first thing I did when I got mine was compare the DVD and the Blu-ray of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Absolutely no comparison in sharpness and breadth of color saturation without the noisy colors of the DVD. CHICAGO offered a richness and crispness in black levels that left the DVD far behind.

And that added sense of dimensionality offered by tripling the resolution makes going back to DVDs very hard indeed.

According to reference books I had here, Bogart loathed William Holden, too. I think he generally made life on the set miserable for many. Maybe his health was working against him. I don't think he looks especially well in the movie to be honest.

Got in the next Criterions: WHITE DOG and EUROPA. Today I'll be finishing up the last of the November Criterion releases: THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD. It's a 2-disc set, so looks like I'll be spending a great portion of the day on it.

I'm planning to get a large screen HDTV TV when I move to Texas in March

Because everything in Texas is large?      ;)

Actually, I have a 50" now.  Thought I might go up to 52".

[Boy, did I leave myself open on that one.]

 :D

Matt,

If I get a flat 52" HDTV, how will my regular DVDs look on it...with/without a Blu-Ray?

Thanks.

I don't remember anyone talking about it, but there are midseason changes ahead for ABC's schedule.

When LOST returns in 2009, it will be on Wednesdays at 9. ABC is moving LIFE ON MARS into the Wednesday 10 p.m. slot.

PRIVATE PRACTICE is moving to Thursday nights at 10 after GREY'S ANATOMY.

I don't think that the cancer had hit Bogart when he made SABRINA.  In fact, from what I've read, it didn't happen for a couple more years, AFTER he made THE HARDER THEY FALL.  They didn't discover it until he was in pre-production for a movie with Bacall.

I think that he was just unhappy.

Bogie may have been an s.o.b., but I would have liked to have known him.

But I will certainly agree that SABRINA original is miles ahead of the remake.

And of course we have the controversy of Edith Head accepting the Oscar for clothes the Hubert Givenchy designed.

What kind of regular DVD player are you using with it? Is it connected with the component (red-blue-green) cables or an HDMI connection (which is far better to display digital pictures on a digital set. It's a digital cable while component cable signals are analog and require an extra level of processing inside your TV which sometimes results in a slightly softer picture and aren't capable of upconversion.)

A Blu-ray player will also upconvert regular DVDs to match the HD resolution of your set. You can buy upconverting regular DVD players, too, but why not get a Blu-ray that can play both regular DVDs upconverted AND 1080p Blu-ray discs?

My question for ASK BK day:

Have you ever been on a television quiz/game show?  How did it go?  Did you win any prizes?

OR

What current television game show would you like to be on.....

The closest I came to appearing on a game show was auditioning for The Dating Game.  I have no idea what game shows are even on TV these days.

ASK BK

When someone recognizes and ask "Weren't you in........"
What movie or tv show do they usually say?

They usually don't say a title - they just know the face and ask "what have I seen you in?"  Usually I just say that I was in a lot of 70s TV shows and I name a few.

I know it's become somewhat fashionable to now like the film or think of it as a misunderstood masterpiece, but I find it dreadful in just about every way.  I've watched it twice (full-length version) and hated it both times.

What really works in his favor, though, is that he is the exact opposite of Holden in temperament.  I really "felt" that he had been groomed/trained/molded into the heir of his family business.  Holden's character was the outsider....much like the disparity between Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Princess Margaret Rose.  One was staid/stiff/somber while the other was a playgirl.  It hardly seemed feasible, but it was there.

Bogart's Linus seemed tolerant but resentful of his younger brother.  Many families have these personality disparities among siblings.  One is outgoing and easily attracts friends in youth...and sometimes falls into disrepute in adulthood.  Another is responsible, toes the line and studies hard.  This one succeeds, but he may not always appear happy or may not be happy.

I approach this as having been unaware of any "set" problems on this film.  I don't know if Bogart ever had a "process", but I find myself wondering if perhaps his approach here was to deliberately create this tension to  aid/abet his character development.

Re:  Hepburn.  I imagine she was surrounded by a coterie of people attending to her (having recently won the Oscar).  Remember that he and Kate Hepburn had gotten along famously doing "The African Queen".  Kate was no-nonsense, no-fuss, down-to-earth and temperamentally suited to be the match of any man against whom she was cast.  Audrey seemingly charmed most of her leading men into total adoration of her.  There's something "not told" in all of this.  I suspect only Lauren Bacall, herself, could shed any light on it.

That said, having seen Hepburn with so many "older" actors in her career, Bogart did not seem nearly as odd/strange/or ludicrous to me as did Cooper in "Love in the Afternoon."

For viewers of TAR, this nugget in Seth Rudetsky's column this week:

Quote
Nick is currently on TV's "The Amazing Race" with his sister, and I asked him what filming it was like. He said that he didn't want the other contestants to know that he was an actor because he thought that they'd assume he was always putting on a façade, so he told people that he was going into his father's business as a funeral director. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to him, right after he told everybody, they went to an airport computer station and googled him, which led right to his acting website. For the rest of the trip, he kept up the façade that he was in the funeral business not knowing that they were keeping up the façade that they believed him. His version of not wanting to appear deceitful set him up to look ten times more deceitful. Excellent work!

Hmm...

Catherine McPhee was just singing on "The View".  She was singing "Somewhere" (from West Side Story).  David Foster was accompanying her on piano - along with a click-track of the rest of the orchestra.  They were performing the arrangement of "Somewhere" that he had written for Barbra Streisand's "Broadway Album".  Thankfully, Ms. McPhee did not totally ape Ms. Streisand's version, however, I just found the whole set-up a little weird.

*Although, Kiri Te Kanawa used to use the same arrangement in concert too, so... ???

Your "Mickey Rooney" comment reminds me of something that Dore Schary said to me when I interviewed him years ago for my book on movie sequels.

Orginally, MGM had considered making YOUNG TOM EDISON w/Mickey Rooney and EDISON, THE MAN w/Spencer Tracy as one long movie.  Said Schary: "Rooney would play the boy, then we'd dissolve and Tracy would be the adult.

"It didn't take us long to realize that such an optical effect would produce the biggest laugh in the history of movies, so we decided to divide the project in half."

Oy! This STUDENT PRINCE medley will be the death of me: the singer took too long makingup his mind, and the copyist and I had to juggle other jobs to finish our work. Now, the orchestra doingit with the singer wants it yesterday and I got the proofcopy yeaterday without the chorus parts and many problems since it needed to be proofed. So, I spent most of yesterday proofing it and gave my corrections via phone last night before stepping out. This morning i got the finished copy, with most of the errors corrected but still one section completely missing the harp and celesta parts, 12 bars of errors still in the viola part, and the iformation that he'd printed out the orchestra parts and sent them off! This is not acceptable. I sent my corrections just now with a terse, I DON'T CARE IF IT'S GETTING THERE LATER THAN THEY LIKE; I WILL NOT RELEASE A CHART I HAVEN'T FOUND READY TO GO.

Why do it once when you can do it again?

Oh, and the chorus parts, which appear to be okay, don't reflect in the score the changes to the solko tenor part.  and on it goes . . .  This copyist is good, and I blame the tenor for taking too long to decide on things, but I don't need him losing work because there are too many errors in the charts he sends out.

Last night's "The Biggest Loser":

SPOILER

There have been bone-headed maneuvers on this show in years past, but one of my favorite players this season has gone from making a brilliant move last week to making one of the stupidest moves EVER this week.

Amy voted out Coleen last night INSTEAD OF chief manipulator/bitch Vicky.  Vicky is Amy's BIGGEST THREAT and yet she chose to atone for voting against "Blue" last week and voted "Black" this week.  There's no physical way Coleen could ever have challenged Amy for what she currently holds: The highest weight loss percentage of all players.  Even last night, Amy was at the top, and Coleen was at the bottom.

For some dumb reason, her "blue" compatriots have brainwashed her into believing that they have to vote as a "team" even though the team phase is over and it's every man/woman for him/herself.

I "smelled" this one coming a mile away.  Vicky DEMANDED everyone perceive Amy as a traitor to the cause.  She told Bob she "would not tolerate" a "turncoat" on "her team."   Bob simply wanted to make peace and get all his former team members to make nice and work together.   That's Bob's folly inasmuch as he has lost a key player because of Vicky and Heba (Heba's sending Phil to the black team and the trashing of his character based on nothing)  and he will lose his BEST shot at having the overall winner if Amy is ever below the yellow line because Vicky, Heba and hubby Ed WILL vote Amy out regardless of who she's up against at the bottom.

It's all too stupid at this point.  Amy has been on an emotional roller coaster all week, but it was nothing compared to the total meltdown the viewing audience was treated to when Coleen learned she was leaving.  Coleen nearly distinegrated in tears before our eyes.  It was heartrending.  Amy will have to do double-penance the rest of her life for her stupid, idiotic, boneheaded "mistake" last night.

End SPOILER

Update on my ComCast signal issues from the past few days:

I re-booted my DVR player last night (box is incorporated into the DVR).  Nothing changed.  I called ComCast and the tech there tried a few things and then asked me to  re-boot.  Still nothing.  He asked me to make sure the coaxial cable was securely fastened on both the DVR and at the wall plate.  I did that.

I got TCM and IFC signals restored.  Still don't have The Weather Channel.  I believe the outage was caused by my replacing the existing coaxial cable with an older, but longer, coaxial cable when I rearranged my TV stand and components rack a week ago.

Sigh.  I've ordered a high-end coaxial cable (8') in hopes of remedying this, and future related, problems.

When I moved into my house last year I found that the image quality through my cable was terrible on certain channels--ghosts and static, etc.  I had Comcast in to check and they rewired (it still had the original installed cable from 1977 or so.)  Afterwards, the picture quality was terrific and this was before I had the digital service installed.

Long story short--Old cable, picture problems.

Today the office called & said I have chronic ethmoid sinusitis.  It isn’t bad enough for an antibiotic, & the reason I don’t have typical sinus symptoms.  It should go away eventually-EVENTUALLY! 3 months is long enough in my opinion.  I’m picking up a sinus rinse kit today-sounds like fun.

It was somewhat foggy early this morning when my hiking group walked the ditch tail above town.  Just in from Tim, my hiker friend who photographed the owl.

This is a view of the outdoor theater.

I spent most of the afternoon watching the excellent THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD. Starts rather haltingly but once Burton gets out of prison, the pace picks up, the sotry becomes clearer, and then we get those marvelous twists at the end.

I pulled out my Paramount disc of the movie but forgot to compare them since I moved on to the bonus features. But I will compare them tonight.

I had time to watch the first bonus feature: a 2008 interview with John Le Carré that lasted 39 minutes. Loved hearing his stories of the film's production, whom he thought would be ideal casting, etc. Very good featurette.

The next is an hour long documentary on Carré's career. I'll watch this and the others when I go back down.

Mark called me last night at about 8:30.  He had just gotten through talking to the neurosurgeon.  They had scheduled Stan for another CT scan this morning, but due to the lack of progress, they did the scan last night instead.  The results showed that there was absolutely no change in Stan's brain since Sunday's scan.  They asked for permission to operate one more time and see if there is anything they can do to correct Stan's brain.  The surgeon said not to hold out much hope for any change, but that he did want to, at least, try.  If this surgery doesn't work this afternoon, there is nothing more that can be done for Stan.

I didn't HATE the Bogart-Audrey pairing in SABRINA.....Holden just seemed more her type.  I didn't like the Audrey-Gary Cooper pairing in LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON, because Cooper looked so bad.

But the WORST pairing for me was Gary Cooper and Suzy Parker in TEN NORTH FREDERICK...whew!

And like DR MATTH - it's funny I didn't mind Hepburn and Astaire.....

Which reminds me of an Astaire movie I haven't seen in a long time and really liked:  THE PLEASURE OF HIS COMPANY.

Perlberg-Seaton did some really fine movies for Paramount in the late fifties....

I like GARY UNMARRIED.....mostly because I like Jay Mohr, but some of the comedy is very funny.  Can't figure out if I don't like the actress playing his ex-wife....or she is just good a playing an annoying character.

It also features friend of MR BK, Ed Begley Jr, in a recurring role.

End SPOILER

CONTINUED SPOILER~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DR Ron, FYI from Jillian Michaels newsletter recapping last night's show

Quote
Back at home, Coleen is now in size 10 pants — quite a change from the size 22 she was wearing when she arrived at the Ranch! She looks amazing and happy, and I can't wait to see jaws drop when viewers see her again.

End spoiler

Fred Astaire is somebody else who could do no wrong.

Well it did seem like she was likely winner. But they mostly pick the wrong winners, so i wasn't sure. It's funny but at the beginning of the season they were definitely getting rid of the worst people. But the past few weeks i think they made some mistakes. I thought elina was beautiful. And i thought marjorie took great pics. My fav tonight by far was analeigh. So i was pretty upset they dumped her. I really would have loved to see her do the runway. Mckey is so awkward. And sam was goofy. But they should have gotten rid of her weeks ago (surely before marjorie and analeigh).

So...

When I got up this morning, I decided to check J&R's website to see if Volume 4 of Jean-Efflam Bavouzet's Complete Debussy cycle had come in this morning... Well, the website said that the disc was "In Stock", and since their website's inventory system is directly tied into their store inventory system, well...

So, that's how I ended up spending the afternoon in, around, up and down, and back and forth the Lower East Side.  :)

*And, yes, the disc was indeed on the shelf.  In fact, I could tell it had indeed just been stocked since the only copies of the disc were on the "Just Released" shelf - there were none in the regular bins.  -And the "new release sale price" had to be entered manually at the cash register too.

-Ah, the literal pursuit of music!  -And I know I could have just downloaded the disc from iTunes or Amazon or directly from Chandos' website, however, I really wanted the liner notes.  They're really good liner notes.

I'm currently more than half way through Candace Bushnell's new book One Fifth Avenue.

I am surprised. But there is a lot of graphic sex in her book.  Most of the other books that i read that i thought would be similar (say Emily Giffen or Sophie Kinsella) do not have such graphic scenes.

Also i don't usually like it that much when authors go back and forth between characters. But Bushnell does this really well (and in the same chapter). It's very odd how seamlessly she can switch.

My 3 year old niece cried when my sister (her mother) said that she could not watch ANTM with us. She literally bawled.

Anyhow my sis said she could watch 5 minutes. So she picked her favorite.

Well when the show ended she was in her bed but still not asleep. So i went to tell her that her favorite had won. She pumped her hand and said "yeah!".

Then she turned to me and said, "what did she win?"

What model is that, the 300?

Anyway, without an HDTV, you'd see no real differences to speak of. The machine would be downconverting 1080p transfers so your 480i TV could display it. I don't see the point.

Better to save your pennies and get an HDTV. They're really quite reasonable now, especially last year's 720p models in smaller sizes. I priced an RCA 32" LCD HDTV last week for $399. Other brands cost more but there are deals to be had.

Thanks MattH,  I thought as much.  We can also get a free HDTV  with the points  but it is only a 19 inch and Vixdad thought it would be much too small

Dear Lord...

Jose - in a word "yes"  :D
DH Jed, who is a former HS music teacher, has always had a deep loathing of show choirs, and it is just because of this tacky, over-the-top quality.  Neither Jed nor I have any use for it.  It simplifies music in order to add cheesy choreography.  The sad part is that when schools have a show choir, most of the time it becomes the "top" group, and gets the best singers.  A chamber choir or jazz choir that could otherwise be very good, is left to suffer.  But don't get me started :)

the test very easy - just a lot of waiting - I got to the facility about 15 minutes early so I could fill in paperwork but they had it all pre-done since I had had my CT done at its sister facility  2 weeks ago

I had to wait about a half hour befoer I was called and thenI changed into my sweats, and they shot me up with a radioatic dye and then sent me into  a little room to wait.  I had a recliner and a TV and remote and a blanket if - they had only exchanged the quart of barium liquid I had to drink for a bottle of wine it would have been the perfect way to spend the day

I actually ended up falling asleep - the tech  (an absolutely lovely woman)
very gently woke me and led me to the machine -

then I just had to lie down with my head in a "brace" so I couldn't move it side to side - and my arms to my side and they bound me with velcro - so I wouldn't move and started the test

the machine just made a soft humming noice - I had been envisioning the loud banging of an MRI (and I HATE loud noices) so I was pleasantly suprised

I am not sure how long the test took because I fell asleep again

they let me leave with a CD of the test and a promise that my doctor would have it tomorrow

On the drive home I received a call from  oncologist giving me thename if the radiation dr.  I have an appoinmtent with him for this Friday morning -  I had to arrange for a "referral" (for insurance) for 6 Dr visits and 40 radiation treatments---

by time this is done I won't be able to use the computer -  I'll probably make it go all wobbly just by walking into the room

bk - If you happen to have the time while you're in NYC, I think it might be worth your time - and $$$ - to take a trip down to J&R to browse their huge(!) CD selection.  While I was there, they were putting out three big bins of those Japanese mini-LP/CDs you like - lots of classic jazz and classical titles.  -All on sale too.

Ooh, can we go together?  I've never been down there.  Let's DO it.

I just found a clip on YouTube of Scott Bakula singing Not While I'm Around at the 93 Kennedy Center Honors Sondheim event.  This makes me happy.  I love Bakula, and I love the song.  The interpretation is interesting, though.  At one point they cut to a shot of Sondheim listening to this, and I'd pay good money to know what was going through his head.  He's smiling, true, but there's a definite thought behind there.

I like Scott Bakula too.  And, coincidentally, I just happened to give a listen to both Three Guys Naked from the Waist Down and Romance Romance.

Now, as for what Mr. Sondheim was thinking, well... To quote Sunday: So many possibilities.

;D

SURE!

I really think you'll fall in love with the place.  *And if you grab one of those "tourist books" from the hotel lobbies, there's usually a $10-off coupon in them for purchases over $50 or $100.  They come in very handy.  *And after Thanksgiving, they tend to put most of the store on sale.  -And, yes, they have DVDs too.

I watched all of the rest of the bonus features on the SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD bonus disc. Well done and interesting (and lengthy). There was a 49 minute audio interview with Martin Ritt from 1985 that was really fascinating to listen to.

Ossie Morris does a selected scene audio commentary (39 minutes) that was also grand listening.

Really enjoyed these bonuses.

I wonder if there are any good eating jernts near the Tudor Hotel?

Actually, the bar and restaurant in the Tudor are pretty decent.  There aren't the plethora of 24-hour places in that part of town, but there are some decent choices.

For a start, here's the Yelp* listing for "Midtown East": Click Here (http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=&rpp=10&find_loc=Manhattan%2FMidtown+East%2C+New+York%2C+NY&cflt=restaurants)

You're most likely going to have to walk West a block or two from where the hotel is for most places.  And there a TON of places right around and IN Grand Central Station too.

I'm watching "WALL-E" that I got today.  It's interesting to watch it with the subtitles turned on (no euphemism intended).  There are a lot more words "spoken" than what I'd thought.  And there are descriptions of the noises, such as (BEEPING) and (CONFUSED BEEP) and (M-O CHATTERING ANGRILY).  M-O is the robot that cleans up contaminants on the ship that Eve is taken to after she takes the plant from WALL-E.

Here's another:  (M-O SCREAMS IN FRUSTRATION) ;D The noises are shown in parentheses.
