Title: OMELET IN A PITA
Post by: bk on November 23, 2008, 09:40:28 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes almost weren't posted because I kept getting an "error" message via AOL ("This document contains no data"), so I posted them through Safari and it worked, thank goodness, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently enjoying an omelet in a pita.

I really have to say that my best trips are the ones I have taken to NY, NY and to LA, LA.

Both NYC trips were equal in delightfulness, although the first one with that fantastic walking eating tour may have the slight edge.

but of my many Los Angeles trips I have to count the birthday trip I took to see BK's BRAIN FROM PLANET X as possibly the most fun.

So, since I stayed out much later than I should have tonight, here are the "short versions":

Dinner with bk and Alex Rybeck at Joe Allen.
Menu as previously mentioned.
A pleasure to finally meet Alex formally.
Pictures of bk's hand and the pumpkin pie will posted tomorrow/later today.

After dinner at Joe Allen, I headed over to John's Pizza to meet up with ODR Jason and some other friends for a belated celebration of Jason's birthday.  *And the reason he did not check in on the day of his birthday was due to the crazy(!) schedule he's on right now: he's back at MTI and he's the assistant merchandise manager for MTI.

Appetizer: Mozzarella Wedges (breaded and deep-fried)
Pizzas: Two Small - One Plain (Cheese), One with Pepperoni and Sausage.
Drinks: One pitcher of Coke, one pitcher of Diet Coke

Since I had had a substantial salad at Joe Allen, I basically had a slice of pizza for my dessert.

After leaving John's Pizza, we headed over to the Regal Cinemas on 42nd Street to catch the 11:00pm showing of "Quantum of Solace".

-15 minutes of previews.
-One of the worst theme songs ever.  It sounded like they used a "detuner" on the voices.  The vocals literally made me flinch.
-Lots of actions.  LOTS.  Not too much dialog.
-Daniel Craig was only shirtless for about one minute.  :-\
-Again, lots of action.
-Well paced, but should and could have been trimmed by about 10 minutes.
-Turned out that I knew almost everyone else who showed up - I had played auditions for almost all of them.  -And one of them knew me from VCU.

And, no, I did not see "Twilight" tonight.  However, I'm tempted to see it only because my friends who did see it this weekend, said it was one of the funniest (unintentional) comedies they have seen this year.  ;D

bk - If you notice that your calves seem a little sore and/or tight tomorrow, you can avoid that by putting a very slight incline on the treadmill - just one or two points/degrees.  It's just enough of an angle to soften your footstrike without adding too much extra "effort".

DR Jennifer - RE: The store's price-matching policy - It's always best to "contest" those things during the week when they have "regular" managers on duty and not just "weekend managers".  And I'd say just call the store directly.  Do not write a letter - it will just get added to the pile.  ;)

Dostana.

;D

-Actually, when we arrived at the theatre, it appeared that the last showing of "Dostana" was just getting out.  There were a couple of us who took notice of the attractive, all-male, Indian clientele leaving the multiplex.

*Alas, I did not take any pictures.

In April 1986 the not yet Vixdad took me to meet his folks (since we were engaged he thought it might be a good idea) they were then residing in Coventry, The Midlands, England.

Coventry is where Lady Godiva had her famous ride -- they are also famous for their Silk Weavers - beautiful poictures made of silk (of which I bought several) we toured the old medevial Coventry Cathedral whcih was destroyed in the Blitz - and the new modern Catheral right next door.... had a Ploughman's lunch in a pub which has been continuously in business since the days of Henry VIII

We took a day trip to Stratford and saw where Will Shakespeare hung out, had a nother day trip tp Warwicke castle and one day was spent in London ending with
a moonlit walk across Tower bridge

Good morning, all! I've been online shipping holiday gifts and pondering my day. I have one chart to finish before tonight's chorus rehearsal, and I'm forced to be home today waiting for a staples delivery, so when I finish the chart, i'll go back to work on the Loesser score.

My best trip to New York, five years before I moved here, was in 1974 to see one of the first performances of CANDIDE at the Broadway Theatre. During the same trip, I saw PIPPIN, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, and FIND YOUR WAY HOME with Jane Alexander and Michael Moriarty.  I also saw several good friends from college, including my friends Matthew and Myra who came down from Boston, and had several wonderful meals in some very good restaurants I could never afford when I moved here.  I remember us leaving the Museum of Art and being caught in the St Patrick's Day parade before hitting the matinee of PIPPIN, and that may be the last time I saw Myra; by the time I had moved to Manhattan, she and Matthew had parted company. She died in the first plane to hit the World Trade Center on 9/11. She was a good lady.

TOD:

Any of the choral tours of England that I've done.  Staying in one place for a week, usually in the Cathedral close, and taking day trips here and there while singing daily services in England's great cathedrals has been, for me so far, among my most cherished mountain-top experiences.

Monday morning greetings!  This is a one-day (Tuesday) work week for me.  Today I'm having breakfast with my friend Becky and then doing the major Thanksgiving grocery shopping.

TOD - Summer, 1996, DH Richard, DS Rob (then almost 11), and I took the first of our 3 big family driving vacations.  We were away 3 and a half weeks - made a big loop from here up to South Dakota, then across northern Wyoming to Yellowstone NP, then down through Utah to Zion NP, one night in Las Vegas (at the Luxor - Rob was in his "Egyptian" phase then), then 5 nights in greater LA.  While there, we did Disneyland on Friday and Universal Studios on Monday.  From LA, we drove to Phoenix and picked up my mom, who traveled the last week with us back here to Ohio.  That last week we visited the Painted Desert and Santa Fe, and then "hit it for home" for 4 days, stopping only to eat pizza, watch the Atlanta Olympics, and sleep.  It was wonderful family time and we made a lot of great memories.

We took a driving trip east in 1999, which was also pretty spectacular.  We went west again in 2001, concentrating on Colorado, which we had skirted around 5 years earlier.

Of course, my NYC trips have all been glorious, starting with my mom taking me there between my junior and senior years in high school.

From the Fed Ex tracking site, it looks as if Miami university Library is getting 37 cartons of crap today. I'm a bit concerned because the weight of some of thecartons, which should be between 20-40 lbs are weighed in as 2 lbs! I hope i's a Fed Ex error that they will correct before billing me rather than a situation in which the cartons have been stripped of their contents.

I'm up after a fitful night of sleep - bed isn't too bad, but it always takes me a day or two to get used to a new bed.  At about four I awakened by some clicking noise happening outside the bathroom window - I shut the door and that helped.  I shall now attempt to drag myself to the exercise room, although I could wait until this evening instead.  So, I did a total of five miles yesterday, if google maps is correct.  Pretty good.

I really enjoyed last night's show, although i felt so bad for my favorite couple nick and starr. They really had bad luck with their cab drivers. Although they realy should have followed dallas and mom that 2nd ride. then they wouldn't have gotten lost. I really wish the show would let them use their own navigational skills more. I think that would put the burden on them. I really felt that they got screwed. I mean they do every task perfectly. Yet they had 3 cab rides from hell.
I was happy the passed the frats. They do seem nice enough (although that marching of one of them was the most awful thing i've seen), but i just think they are awful racers. And want them gone. They got lucky a few times in cabs. But they suck at every task. I was also upset it was a non elimination since they really deserved to go. Next week's preview looks crazy and i feel bad that one team loses their money/passport. No matter which team it is, that is awful. And hopefully they find it. One more thing re: last night's show, i wonder how long the frats had to sit outside that cab at the end. I wonder if they were forced by rules to sit there (i would have said i was going to check in at the pit stop and then come back to settle it). But i have a feeling it is in the rules that you must settle your account. They were lucky the guy accepted what they had.

I have a couple of memorable trips, though none very far away.

The first trip where I traveled to a new place as the only adult (no DH to be responsible and make decisions) was when I took DRs Sandra and Megan to Las Vegas. I had never been there and didn't know the way or what we'd find. We had a great (and clean) time.
Notable quotes:
"We don't have enough time to take a survey! We only have five hours to curtain -- and we have to go across the street!"

and

"Dam!"

As for the Topic of the Day...

Australia!  Australia!  Australia!
Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney to be exact.
It was great for a number of things - which I believe I've recounted before - but...
1) I was going on someone else's dime.
2) I got to meet DRs Tomovoz and Colin in Melbourne, and they even generously hosted me for an evening at the abode.

And I'd also have to say my first trip to Chicago... Where my first order of business was going to the Art Institute to see the Seurat...  Of course, I cried when I finally stood in front of "La Grande Jatte..."  But it was a good cry.

And most of my trips to NYC when I was in college were also quite wonderful.

I did the treadmill.  When I got down there, all three were in use, but thankfully the guy who was using the one I used last night was finished five minutes later.  I began and did a little over four miles, burning (according to the machine) 600 calories, going 7.5 speed (don't know what that means but I'm doing the four miles fifteen minutes faster than the long jog - I do fifteen minute miles on the long jog - on the treadmill it's twelve.  I took my shower in the changing room (a nice stall shower), then came up, did my hair and got dressed, and shall now be on my way to Ripley-Grier for rehearsal.

DR Jennifer, I don't know if you remember a few seasons back on TAR. It was the finals and the team (can't remember their names) were at the gate leading to the finish line and they had to beg money to pay the cab driver before they could run to the finish line.  I think they either have to pay the fee or have the driver agree to accept less.

I need to get busy here at work, but this morning has started great!   Last night I put the mirror frame back up in the bathroom before going to bed so that was nice to wake up to - something actually finished.   I called the electrician and he'll be there tomorrow morning.  Then I called the Habitat for Humanity pick up person and she'll be there today to pick up the portable dishwasher that's been in my garage for the past two years.  It's still in great shape.   They have a Habitat resell place where you can get used building materials, appliances and lots of new stuff that has been donated to them, windows etc.  The money they make goes to their Habitat houses.  So I'm donating the dishwasher. I didn't use it much, it wouldn't fit in the new house and there was already one there.  I've been trying to give it away for a year, I'm really glad they are going to take it.

So, I'm back on schedule and if the electric is done, I'll still be able to finish that room either before or right after Christmas.  Woo Hoo~!

DR Jane - I see Mallomars all the time in the stores.  Are they a seasonal item on the West Coast?

Interesting, they should be seasonal on both coasts.  I can't get them here anymore, at least I haven't seen them for a number of years now.  My brother gets me a box at a little market near him.

TOD:
A week after my first year in law school, my parents, my Aunt Priscilla and I drove from Iowa through the Black Hills, through Yellowstone (we stayed at the Old Faithful Inn while there was still snow on the ground but the temps were in the 60s) through the Canadian Rockies to Prince Rupert Canada. Then we took the ferry to Ketchikan, Alaska.  After a couple days there, my aunt caught a plane from the airport where the bridge to nowhere would end (it isn't really to nowhere, it's to the airport - the ferry there was fine)  and we took a week long cruise through the Inland Passage.  Our ship was small and we were able to do a bow landing at a glacier,  I leaned over the front of the boat and got a glass of water from a waterfall, etc.  We went to Haines, Skagway, Juneau, Sitka, through Glacier Bay and I'm sure I'm forgetting some of it.

Then we went back to Ketchikan for a night or two - we had a friend who lived there so we stayed at his house - and drove across Canada to Edmonton and south...through Fargo and back home.    It took us about a month.  It was a fabulous trip

The Somali pirates, renegade Somalis known for hijacking ships for ransom in the Gulf of Aden, are negotiating a purchase of Citigroup.

The pirates would buy Citigroup with new debt and their existing cash stockpiles, earned most recently from hijacking numerous ships, including most recently a $200 million Saudi Arabian oil tanker. The Somali pirates are offering up to $0.10 per share for Citigroup, pirate spokesman Sugule Ali said earlier today. The negotiations have entered the final stage, Ali said.

"You may not like our price, but we are not in the business of paying for things. Be happy we are in the mood to offer the shareholders anything," said Ali.

The pirates will finance part of the purchase by selling new Pirate Ransom Backed Securities.  The PRBS's are backed by the cash flows from future ransom payments from hijackings in the Gulf of Aden.  Moody's and S&P have already issued their top investment grade ratings for the PRBS's.

Australians like to travel.

I've been to North America thrice, Europe five times, (three of those vacations have been primarily in France)New Zealand twice and The UK &/or Island four times and lived in London for a year.  I've also travelled the Panama route from OZ to England.

I have no idea which was the most wonderful trip.  Age, circumstances and company have been factors of course.  My trips this century (France and North America) were more "people" orientated - I suspect that it is why they are special.  Some current and ex DRs have added so much to my enjoyment of USA, Canada, UK & France.

I did spend the afternoon viewing THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN on Blu-ray. As a film, it features the same kind of intense battle scenes as the first NARNIA adventure (different adversaries, of course), so while I find the characters appealing, it didn't seem much different than the first one. (Perhaps that's why its US box-office take was about half of what the first one made; it was much more popular overseas.)

The Blu-ray does look spectacular, however, as good or better than the last one, and the DTS-HD Master Audio offers 7.1 channels, so the sound is REALLY enveloping. Very impressive production.

I did have time to listen to some of the audio commentary: the director and the four main actors. Thankfully, they're older now so there isn't as much giggling and silly stuff going on as was on the first NARNIA commentary.

Still more things on the first disc before I can move on to the second one later today.

Back from rehearsals and a trip to J&R.  Rehearsals were fun - I heard six singers and they're all really good.  The duet with Julie Reiber and Katie Adams from Wicked will be a real highlight, as will a movie medley sung by Terry Burrell.  But the true highlight of the day was seeing our amazing ensemble do Turkey Lurkey Time with the original Bennett choreography.  I sat there like a kid in a candy store and I just didn't want it to end.  Our opening number is looking good, too.

In yesterday's NY Times Book Review, one of the dealers was offering a first edition.  For a mere $18,500.00.

Does anyone want to buy it for DR The Vixter's school report?

DAMN!

You spoiled the surprise!!!!!

Dear BK - I think you should eat at The Renaissance Diner on 9th Avenue.

Alas, The Renaissance has gotten really spotty and inconsistent lately, especially at breakfast and brunch.  However, their sandwiches and burgers seem to be foolproof.

*And I'm still a little "mad" they stopped making their homemade corn chips.  They would serve them with maple syrup.  Soooo good.  -Well, they were soo good.

Hmm... I did a little research, and they are a seasonal item - they're only produced three months out of the year.  Maybe I only looked for them, noticed them during the "colder months".  -Or maybe some stores just had some "old stock" on their shelves?

I remember playing for a show that "featured" Mallomars - one of the lead characters ate them.  So, of course, backstage were boxes and boxes of them.  And, of course, after one package was opened on stage - and only two of them were consumed - all the "leftovers" were put on the "free-for-all" table.... :)

And here's a NY Times article from 2005 about the beloved treat: The Cookie That Comes Out in the Cold (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/08/nyregion/08cookie.html)

DR JoseSPiano - when do you get on the bus?  [and I don't mean the short bus...]

I decided to splurge on the train this time - at least for the trip down. I'll be heading down Wednesday morning to DC.  I'll stay in Fairfax that night with my brothers, and then we'll all ride down to Richmond on Thursday.

*The Acela was actually on the cheap side for this Wednesday.  ???

**And I'm thinking I may fly down for Christmas on the Delta Shuttle.  If I book the round trip two weeks in advance, it's only $129(!).  Alas, since it's the shuttle, the luggage restrictions are really restrictive, but even with the surcharge, it's not that bad.

I want to see a good production - I saw Leonard Nimoy (as Dysart, not Alan) on tour and I saw a horrible student, studio theater production - of EQUUS; I played Nugget in a scaled-down semi-professional production, which I consider to be some of the hardest, and most rewarding theater work I've ever done.

She was a good lady.

elmore, I am so sorry about your friend.  I guess I didn't realize you had lost a good friend on 9/11.

Had a lovelier than lovely dinner at Joe Allen - I had the same as last night - shrimp cocktail and a large Caesar salad, but I knew that just wasn't enough food, given the 4 mile treadmill run and the additional three miles I walked.  So, I ordered a side of mac and cheese, which they do really well.  I split it with Juliana and Kevin, so I only ate less than half the side, which is a real side and not that much food.  I then walked home briskly and am now in my cozy and warm room.  I'll probably check and see what's on cable, or I might play a couple of these CDs I got today.

Did I miss something?  Why are they doing a duet from WICKED in the Bacharach tribute?

I don't really know what to say, Laura.  Stan is semi-lucid for maybe one to two minutes in an hour's time, the rest of the time he is asleep.  He knows where he is (St. Joe's), the year (08), and the month (November), and sometime he knows his name; but most of the time he is John Smith or unknown.  Today was a horrible day.  He was not lucid at all, and he seemed to be far more uncomfortable and in pain than usual.  I don't know what to think, or what to hope for any more.

When my mother died in 1994, she spent several days before her death talking to deceased family members as she wandered in and out of lucidity. When my dad was dying last year, he told Jo there were "angels" in the room. My last words to him were, "I love you, but if Mom walks though the door and says 'come with me, old man,' I want you to follow her."

Matt, if you're doing Lost Blu-ray, let me know if you have trouble getting the discs to load.  I got them all to work, but it was a bit of a trial.

Did I miss something?  Why are they doing a duet from WICKED in the Bacharach tribute?

Julie Reiber and Katie Adams from Wicked will be doing a Bacharach duet.

Today turned sort of frustrating.   I have a couple things I have to get done at work before I leave that involve research and writing motions and briefs.  I had set aside today, but apparently my assistant didn't. So I had  a couple major interruptions and then I made a huge mistake which let me to having to start all over on one of the motions.  So now, here I am, house hasn't been cleaned and I still have a motion and brief to go before my parents stay tomorrow night.   AHHHH!

Well, all I have tomorrow is a hearing at 2:00 PM and then my parents will arrive around 3:30 - 4:00 PM So, I'm going to work at home in the morning. Actually, I'll stay up tonight and get the last motion and brief written and then tomorrow morning I can clean while the electrician is here and the habitat for humanity people arrive to get the dishwasher...she lost her keys to her truck today and couldn't get here...I wonder if they are with DR Jose's keys

Last night I watched the Royal Ballet do GISELLE: happy peasants, madness and suicide, and then dancing ghosts of dead virgins leading wicked men to death; I kept wondering, why is this a classic? It isn't a good score like the Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky or Delibes ballets so I'm puzzled.(http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff302/HHWgroup/5121QvDUKjL_SS400_.jpg)

I'm heading down to get cleaned up. Best friend John and I are doing an early lunch because he's going to buy a new HDTV (32") for his small den and wants me with him at the final selection.

WBBL.

Matt, it is none of my business, but BF John is part of HHW every Monday, so I feel like we sort of know him; I am wondering if he is a gay friend or a straight friend, a former more than friend, or..................?

DR Laura is correct. John is a straight man whom I met while we were both doing WEST SIDE STORY. He has been involved in theater his entire life (his mother was an agent before she retired) and is very gay friendly. We became instant friends with a similar sense of humor and sense of the absurd. Even if he were interested in experimenting, I wouldn't be. He's a very preppie boy next door type, not my type at all.
