It ran beautifully smoothly. Even with the limitation of just the one stage entrance, bk mixed it up and kept a flowing rhythm to the proceedings. The band sounded great, and as bk mentioned, the sound was nearly flawless. Special mention to the backup singers and the amazing William Galison on harmonica. Wow!
There were too many “special moments,” but special highlights for me were the opening number, zippy and full of energy and wonderfully staged by Adam Cates with a concept by bk, John Bolton’s giddy and goofy “Basketball,” Kevin Early’s amazing singing, and "Turkey Lurkey" – it just made the entire audience want to jump up on the stage! Amazing joy. I wasn’t sure how they were going to accomplish it given the very very limited stage real estate, but it came off so amazingly. Jill O’Hara and Tony Roberts were so touching, and Liz Callaway’s mega-wattage voice can do no wrong, in my book. Congratulations to all that made it happen!!
DR FJL was sure that the lyrics actually were: "Do You Know the Way to Blame Jose?" ;D
I am so sorry to have to miss tonight’s gathering.
The DH is coping with his aunt’s estate [he is also the executor], and he just really needs my help at the moment.

Good morning, all! I am so happy for last night's success! I wish I'd been there and thank you, DR singdaw, for the program rundown. Kudos to BK!
Yesterday, I bought my new iMac, which will be delivered tomorrow, and I need to schedule my Mac Man to come over and set me up. I also packed three more cartons of crap for Miami University, which I will ship via Fed Ex tomorrow. My band rehearsal went well, so I look forward to tomorrow night's Men's Chorus rehearsal with the band.
Tonight I am prevented from seeing some wonderful folk because of a previous commitment I had made to negotiate the return of all my original manucripts of arrangements for the NYCGMC, and there are many of them. I do want to get them back and get them to either the Library of Congress or the Miami University Library. I will miss seeing BK, DRs Ben and FJL and others, and I hope you all have a great time!
As for the TOD, I am currently listening to the original London cast of IRMA LA DOUCE and I'm enjoying both the performances, with their additional dialogue scenes, and many lyrics that were rewritten for Broadway. I really love this score.

-
Congrats to BK and the cast and crew to Bacharach to the Future on a tres grande success!
(psst...who snuck in their mp3 recorder?)
-
Vodka naval shots!
Sounds like the voice of experience!! ;)
-
DR elmore3003, I am thrilled at the news of the addition to your family! :)
-
DR Elmore, mazel tov on your new Mac. May the Mac Man "set you up" good and well.
Is that IRMA LA DOUCE London recording new? I may have to order that one.
-
I wish that I cpuld have been there!
I wish it could have been recorded like the STAGE concerts
I wish it could have been photographed.
I wish someone took photos of the show.

DR Ginny, don't know if you saw it the other day, but I posted a link to a supposedly-Mac-friendly slide/negative digitizer.
-
Good morning, had to check and see more about the Benefit. Glad it was such a smashing success!!
-
Speaking of smashing, I was just listening to 20 stage hands unload a Clark Transfer truck right under my window. (they are loading in SPAMALOT) When they dropped the ramp I jumped! I'm on the second floor so I'm literally right over them. Anyway, they usually do all the unloading in the alley behind the theater, I'm right next to the alley beside the theater that leads to the stage door. It was a fun little change. Having missed my fall trip to NYC I'm excited to see SPAMALOT tomorrow night
-
Time to write a brief....later
-
Apparently for DR Cillaliz this morning it is boxes AND briefs!! ;)
-
DR Ginny, don't know if you saw it the other day, but I posted a link to a supposedly-Mac-friendly slide/negative digitizer.
I did see it, DR Singdaw - thanks! Rob's girlfriend may have access to one that I can borrow and I also got prices from a local photo shop that sound pretty reasonable for the small number of slides I have to digitize.
I'll keep you posted!
-
DR Elmore, mazel tov on your new Mac. May the Mac Man "set you up" good and well.
Is that IRMA LA DOUCE London recording new? I may have to order that one.
The CD just came out; it's the original London cast recording on CD for the first time with a whole bunch of extra tracks in French, with Colette Renard (the original Irma), Zizi Jeanmaire, Roland Petit, Les Quartre Barbus, and others. The OBC is great, with the same three leads, but it's got redone lyrics music added for Onna White's dances and the American cast, all wonderful, but this London recording has a couple of short dialogue scenes and a lot of different lyrics. I love Elizabeth Seal, and the notes and photos are nice.

My house seats for WHITE CHRISTMAS just came through! This Saturday at 8 pm. I'm very excited about seeing it and going over to look at the Radio City Christmas tree.

What great news about the benefit! I can feel the excitement in all the reports.....are there in news or internet reports that anyone has found?

TOD:
A dear friend gave me a wonderful box set of THE MUSIC BEHIND THE MAGIC, the demo, work, and final versions of the Ashman-Mencken Disney animated musical scores. I have been taking my time with it because it's so great I want to enjoy every second of the music. This is, by far, the CDs that I have most enjoyed over the past few months.

On TV Tonight!™
ABC - SANTA CLAUS IS COMIN' TO TOWN, ACCORDING TO JIM (a hour of episodes), ELI STONE
CBS - NCIS, THE MENTALIST, WITHOUT A TRACE
NBC - THE BIGGEST LOSER, LAW & ORDER: SVU
FOX - HOUSE, FRINGE.
I believe DR Jennifer's beloved CW shows are reruns tonight.
-
Unless something interesting comes in the mail today review-wise, I'll be stuck working on the latest TRANSFORMERS animated box set, 7 discs of cartoon episodes. This is going to take me days to get through these, one of the downsides of this job I usually enjoy very much.

BK, congratulations on a swell benefit show!!

My head hit the pillow at two-thirty and I arose at eleven-thirty. I really must have been exhausted - I cannot remember the last time I slept that long. Of course, now I'm a little behind, so I'm going down to the fitness room, will work an hour there, then figure out about Fed Ex, ship the box, and then go directly to rehearsal.

One correction to Singdaw's wonderful post about the evening - the opening number was staged by Adam Cates. The contribution to it was the idea of using the LP covers.

DR SINGDAW I have been studying that picture of WHITE CHRISTMAS.....what is Lina Lamont doing in this production.....she seems to be standing on the right.....
Hmmm...maybe that's what WHITE CHRISTMAS is missing--a villain!
In the midst of WWII, a washed-up Lina Lamont had wound up as a USO chorine who got her claws into General Waverly one night in Ensino. It seems that the General, feeling a little sorry for himself, had a bit too much of the local vino and let himself get hitched to an equally inebriated Miss Lamont. An untimely air attack then separated the two, neither of which recalled the marriage ceremony the next morning.
Years later, Lina receives a phone call from her sister, Doris, who tells her about being forced to give up her holiday vacation to perform at some old coot of a retired general's ski lodge. And later that night, as she watches the Ed Harrison Show, it all comes back to Lina. She arrives at the inn on Christmas Eve, marriage license in hand. "Half of this dump is legally mine which means that I have a say in what goes on around here!"
She forces Bob and Phil to give her the still missing Betty's parts in the show. "If anyone's gonna lip sink around here it's gonna be me 'cause I got the experience! If you don't like it, you can pack up your show and leave!"
A half hour before curtain, Betty arrives from New York and is heart broken to find that Bob had replaced her so rapidly. She hops back into the cab and heads back to the train station.
Lina continues to throw her weight around by replacing Judy with Doris for the "Sisters" number. "We're the two sisters here, ain't we?"
Bob and Phil grow frantic as they see their show spin out of their control and about to flop. As curtain time approaches and the snow beings to fall, Phil snaps his fingers and says, "I got an idea!"...
***
Who can come up with a slam-bang happy ending here?

-

:)
Wellllll--you got trouble, my friend...
-
Of course Phil and Bob talk Betty and Judy into singing the songs for Doris and Lina while standing outside the barn in the cold.
But crafty old Emma knows what's what.....and as the finale starts, she slides open the barn door revealing to the audience that it's actually the Haynes sisters and NOT the Lamont sisters who are the REAL stars of the evening!
Bob & Phil and Judy & Betty are happily reunited....and the new finale number is reworking of an Irving Berlin tune now titled - "In Your Advent Bonnet!"
-
Back from the fitness room - in the middle of the treadmill run I realized, as Ron points out, how delusional and groggy I was when I woke up - it was indeed nine hours, not thirteen.
-
I was the only one down there, so I had MY machine. But, as a little test, when I finished I fired up machine three and it worked the same as MY machine.

I have shaved, and must shower and get this box to Fed Ex - there's a Kinko's not too far from here.

WARNING - POLITICAL SATIRE AHEAD!
JON SWIFT (http://jonswift.blogspot.com/2008/11/president-bush-should-pardon-wal-mart.html)
President Bush Should Pardon the Wal-Mart Shoppers
Police in Valley Stream, New York, are reviewing videotapes to attempt to identify exuberant Black Friday shoppers who trampled to death a Wal-Mart worker who made the tragic mistake of getting between them and some very remarkable bargains. Prosecutors may even try to score cheap political points by filing criminal charges against some of these bargain hunters, who have been called “savages” and “animals” by demagogues in the liberal media. Of course, my heart goes out to the family of this man who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but while it is unfortunate that someone got hurt, capitalism is not a dinner party. There will always be some collateral damage in a free market. Socialists who hate capitalism are now trying to scapegoat these patriotic Americans who celebrated an American tradition by rising before dawn on the day after Thanksgiving to express their love of this country by partaking of the bounties of the free enterprise system. How can those of us who were not there judge people on the front lines of the Christmas shopping rush? Can we honestly say that we would not have rushed past or over this unfortunate man on the way to grabbing the last plasma TV or Wii to bring some Christmas joy to our children? After 9/11 President Bush said that the best way to defeat the terrorists was to “go shopping.” Should we now condemn those who took him at his word? If he meant what he said, then before he leaves office President Bush should issue a blanket pardon to these high-spirited consumers to head off this assault not only on Americans who were just trying to make Christmas a little better for their families in these trying economic times but on the capitalist system itself.
…
And if police do succeed in identifying the Wal-Mart shoppers, think of the message President Bush would be sending about the free enterprise system by awarding these great Americans the Medal of Freedom. They refused to horde their hard-earned dollars in low-interest savings accounts but instead went out to spend it, just as President Bush has urged them to do, at an American company that in the best American tradition has given consumers the best bargains possible by not overpaying their workers and by scouring the world for the cheapest merchandise produced in countries that are not subject to draconian labor and environmental laws. Isn’t that the very definition of freedom?

...to the new volunteer administrators' treasurer tomorrow.
I assume "volunteer administrators" is an organization for whom a new, unawares, recruit has been corralled to be the treasurer; the thought of a "volunteer" treasurer is unthinkable.

And from the Borowitz Report:
Obama’s Use of Complete Sentences Stirs Controversy (http://www.borowitzreport.com/article.aspx?ID=6961)
In the first two weeks since the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the past eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences, political observers say.
Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama's appearance on CBS' "Sixty Minutes" on Sunday witnessed the president-elect's unorthodox verbal tic, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth.
But Mr. Obama's decision to use complete sentences in his public pronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the last eight years many Americans may find his odd speaking style jarring.
According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the University of Minnesota, some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a President who speaks English as if it were his first language.
"Every time Obama opens his mouth, his subjects and verbs are in agreement," says Mr. Logsdon. "If he keeps it up, he is running the risk of sounding like an elitist."
The historian said that if Mr. Obama insists on using complete sentences in his speeches, the public may find itself saying, "Okay, subject, predicate, subject predicate - we get it, stop showing off."
The President-elect's stubborn insistence on using complete sentences has already attracted a rebuke from one of his harshest critics, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.
"Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a way that ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder can't really do there, I think needing to do that isn't tapping into what Americans are needing also," she said.

Freaky - in the hour and fifteen minutes since I've posted that post, I just got booked for three different projects covering eight days. :)
But I still have some free time, so... We'll talk tonight at John's Pizza, DR Ben.

The grand total for the car repair and refresh was $168.70. I got off much easier than other DR's this month.....car wise.

Well, with the way things have been going lately, hopefully, it's a sign of the times to come. It's time to turn that downturn into an upturn(?).

I finally joined after founding out I actually might know a few people and was assured that i didn't have to be a teenager. I'm still adjusting to the 20th century, and this new century is too much for poor brain sometimes. There was some leather event in Toronto last weekend that a friend sent pics of, so Facebook is turning out to be not too bad at all.

Unless something interesting comes in the mail today review-wise, I'll be stuck working on the latest TRANSFORMERS animated box set, 7 discs of cartoon episodes. This is going to take me days to get through these, one of the downsides of this job I usually enjoy very much.
DR Matt H - I meant to pass on my "condolences" yesterday when you mentioned this.
;)
I'll talk more about it in a minute, but the problem with the show for me is that I'm watching episodes meant to be seen in daily bits over the course of a month or two instead of force-fed in three days. Thus, the battles all begin to look and sound alike, the good vs. evil scenarios are all formulaic, and the predictability of every episode is just a bit wearing. But, a job's a job, and everything can't be SINGIN' IN THE RAIN or THE MIRACLE WORKER.

Well, after watching "Pokemon" marathons with my nephew, I know exactly what you're talking about.
-
I managed to get 9 episodes of TRANSFORMERS watched this afternoon. Just as I remembered them, but I can shave off about 2 minutes of each episode by skipping the opening and closing credits. When the battles start, I can fast forward through them and cut their running times in half. This is definitely helping stem some of the drudgery from watching this.
-
I did get another review copy in the mail from Paramount: AMERICAN TEEN, that semi-documentary that traces high school lives of five different "types." But it doesn't come out until the 21st, and since TRANSFORMERS comes out on the 16th, this was not a reprieve.

Except that now I want to watch the DVD of White Christmas....all this talk is driving me to it.
I started watching mine last Saturday night. Now I know that it's not the best of transfers, but I know that this last version I bought was the most vivid I had ever seen the film. But as I watched it sat night, it looked terrible--like a copy that might have been shown on UHF during the 80's--all muddy and faded.
It took me a while to realize that earlier in the day I had pulled out all my cables from the back of my TV and I got lazy putting them back into place and I had just used the regular audio/video cables to hook up my DVD player and not used the S-video cable. It did make an extreme difference.
-
I shall now be on my way to rehearse with Mr. Spirtas and Miss Purl, after which I shall go to John's Pizza. Is elmore coming? He'd better be.
No. I'm in a meeting about my manuscripts! I'm mucho sorry.
-
BTW, DR Ben left me a message while I was at physical therapy; he will be absent tonight as well.
-
DR Elmore - didn't you get a new iMac not long ago? Is this an additional computer or a replacement?

My White Christmas is not looking so good with my Upconvert DVD player on my LCD TV....hmmmmmmm.....but it's not the wires....
Anyway...after ALL these years.....I realized long ago that Rosemary Clooney was playing a character named Betty and that she had a singer sister named Betty....but for some reason, I just realized that Bing was playing a character named Bob....and of course his brother Bob was a bandleader....
Not an earth shattering discovery to be sure.....

Yes, I'm afraid I will not be there tonight. I'm very sorry to miss the festivities especially after such a sparkling review.
Jose, if you have any time, even an hour, between Wednesday December 03 and Friday, December 12, (Monday through Friday) we can always use a youthful, intelligent (read able to follow directions) and friendly face. Just come to the 2nd floor of Equity (you know where that is) and tell the person at the desk that you're there to work on the bags and come through to the big rooms in the back. We would love to see you.

Maybe Bing and Rosie saw the writing on the wall and wanted their siblings' names more closely associated with their characters than their own.

SPOILSPORT WARNING AHEAD ABOUT TONIGHT
Strange that we finalized where to go because of specific budgetary concerns and now that doesn't seem to be an issue based on who's coming and who's not coming, and at this point it's probably too late to change the venue.
Guess the 2008 way is that yes means yes unless something better comes up. I thought that was the under-30 approach, but I suppose that's the way it is.
Well, once we all gather in the lobby of John's - since they will not sit an incomplete party anyway - if "we" decide to head to another place for dinner, well... That could be an option.
What time does The Little Pie Shop close? ;)

They tend to ship them as soon as they have them in stock. However, they will not ship them to stores until later. Although, they sometimes "sneak" a box or two to the Virgin Megastore in Times Square ahead of the street date.

Well, Boeing-Boeing (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/123891.html) just officially announced their closing - January 4, 2009. Alas, with their numbers lately, that's not really a surprise - and since it was originally supposed to be a semi-limited engagement, well, they've had a good run.

Glad to know someone else is enjoying the set! I picked it up a ways back, and return to it often!

Apparently dallas and starr are currently dating. And apparently what they showed on tv re: the loss of passports is NOT WHAT happened at all. Which sort of makes me mad. What dallas said was that he did not lose his passport and realize it right away and then stupidly leave that place and continue. What happened was there was a problem with his battery pack and production made him take off his fanny pack. Then he took like 3 different taxis and only then did he realize that he had lost his stuff. So he didn't just look up like they showed. I'll be curious to read more.

We had lots of fun - especially when the pitcher of Diet Coke arrived and I went to pour myself a glass and instead poured half the contents on my pants. I got quite huffy about such a stupid device as a pitcher, and they brought me a towel to dry myself. It was the only drama of the evening. Otherwise, it was grand company, including Jose, Noel, FJL, Adam Cates and his ever-lovin', and little ol' me.

On the really positive side, I am indeed the possessor once again of all my original manuscripts of the tons of work I did for the Men's Chorus between 1980 and 1998. I am very happy about the situation.
I'm very happy for you.

DR Michael S, healing vibes to Michael Rudder. I read he is now sitting up.

Glad to hear it, Larry. I have heard some of it, and you did a fantastic job. A few arrangements in particualr that I can think of were genius.
