A gravy tip from NY Times food columnist Mark Bittman:
Go over to Diner’s Journal to read the Thanksgiving post-mortems and you see a few quite sophisticated cooks using flour to thicken their gravy. And they’re complaining about lumps and mess. Cornstarch, people! Cornstarch! You use 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon cold water for each cup of gravy you want to thicken (you can use a little more if you want it extra thick but don’t overdo it.) Just stir until the mixture becomes milky; when your gravy is done, lower the heat, stir in the cornstarch slurry, and watch the magic. Add more, always mixed with cold water first.

Good morning, all! Another day of various and sundry complications, made easier by my decision to see the film DOSTANA on Saturday morning at 11:30. That means on Saturday I can take my computer down to Tekserve via taxi at 9, perhaps go to the office for an ohour or so and head to the East Village (3rd Avenue and 12th Street) for the movie.
Today, now that my schedule has been determined, I can attempt to assemble this new chest of drawers this morning (this will be grisly!), then head to the NYPL on a BABES libretto search, stop at the market, return and work on the Happiest of Fellows.
DR MBarnum, you have heard of twittwer: "Twitter" occurs whenever you open your mouth to communicate. :-*
Nursie, I suspect DD Bosco is eternally grateful to be alone whenever DR MBarnum leaves the house.

Dostana.........
I had to go; I'm getting nothing but hatemail and threats from DR MBarnum until I see it. I tell ya, he's driving me mad. I'm hoping that if I see it and let him live vicariously for a few minutes he'll send me something nice and expensive for Christmas.
Have I mentioned I love love love my new computer?

I'm up way too early.
I've caught up with last night's posts.

What's next? Dyslexic feet? Teary-eyed chest? Laugh-lined butt?

Don't let my early a.m. lightheartedness fool you.
I am seething inside.
My TV stand arrived DAMAGED. One -- at least -- of the "safety glass" shelves is shattered. I discovered this upon removing some of the styrofoam packaging. BECAUSE it's safety glass, there was no telltale sound of broken glass.
Sigh and re-sigh!

I'm going to perform my morning ablutions, get dressed and go to work.

Thursday morning greetings! It's another go-through-files and clean-out-the-cubicle day for me.
TOD - Not that I ever saw the film in question, but when I moved to SW Ohio in 1973 there was great controversy in Hamilton County over Deep Throat. Sheriff Simon Leis and his staff went to a screening to determine whether or not they found it obscene. Then, they had to see it a second time, just to be absolutely certain. Yeah, right.

Just checking in cause even though I've been lost in the E and T HHW black hole of gratuitous posting, you folks are not forgotten.

Costuming the little theatre's holiday show has taken on a life of its own (might as well take a cot up there) -- period piece (Dickens-ish) so each character has loads of items -- hats, gloves, muffs, scarfs, etc. etc. -- plus a cast of thousands (well, 30 -- but to a small community theatre costumer that equates to a cast of thousands -- plus many hard-to-fit sizes and little details like sprigs of holly to attach to hats and muffs (the kinds of things I'd like to take a hat glue gun to but can't cause we're so small we have to reuse everything, velcro for check changes, etc.
Oops, -- sorry, TMI, I know, I do go on ... and on
-
Just wanted you to know my E and T excuse had a sense of community service .. a benefit to the good of humanity -- you know, I wasn't sitting around eating bon-bons and watching soap operas to avoid you HHWayers...

Uh-oh, I can hear DR RonnieP musing (or would that be grousing?) about my gratuitous mini-frenzy, so I'll stop ...

Sorry DR RonP.

Off to the theatre!
Tah-tah!
-
DR jose, those clearings of my cache did not help. So i really don't understand.
The only thing it did do was i had to re-log on to HHW. :)

Speaking of Dickens-ish, I watched GREAT EXPECTATIONS last night on TCM. What a perfectly perfect movie it is! Putting aside that it leaves out over half the plot from the book, I think it's probably the best Dickens adaptation (I'm not counting theatrical or TV mini-series, though.)
Is it available on DVD?
Yes, it is! On Criterion (http://www.amazon.com/Great-Expectations-Criterion-Collection-Spine/dp/B00000F17E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1228403291&sr=1-2), no less.
-
The problem with "controversial" movies is that, what was controversial back then might not be controversial today.
That aside, I've always enjoyed:
I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG
CROSSFIRE
FURY
ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN
JFK
THEY WON'T FORGET (Wish they'd release this one on DVD)
-
Movies in which dogs or other animals are killed are too difficult for me to watch, which is why I won't see WHITE DOG.
I won't watch OLD YELLER or THE YEARLING either.
-
For those of you who pre-ordered my book [ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker], I was informed by my publisher that it started shipping yesterday.
Thank you and enjoy!
-
DR Ron Pulliam, I'm sorry about the broken glass. IO know how frustrating it is in having your hopes dashed when the item arrives and in the time and effort comsumed to achieve satisfaction from the original shippers. I've been couting and sorting whatchamacallits, screws, bolts, etc for the last 40 minutes. Oy!
I saw DEEP THROAT a couple of times in Dayton in the 1970s; I still don't know if it's obscene. Sometimes unintentionally funny and sometimes very funny. Rude, perhaps.

Barbara's appearances while shilling her book have been especially painful for me to watch.....I usually just change the channel.
I still remember the resentment from her colleagues when she jumped ship from NBC to co-anchor the ABC Evening News with Harry Reasoner....and her one million dollar contract.
But to pretend that she still has any NEWS credentials left is a bit sad on her part.
-
Generally, I do like Barbara Walters. She seems a fun enough person as evident on her appearances on David Letterman. And I find her interviews with celebs to be pleasant enough to watch. But, yes, she can also be very pretentious, self-promoting and self-important.
-
I finally kind of have a day off, though it will be spent cleaning house and I suspect a new pile of review discs (including Mamma Mia BD) will arrive. I will now reveal my utmost geekdom to say that one of the DVDs I'm most excited about getting to review is The Best of Password. I hope it will have lots of the classic Ludden episodes.
I spent yesterday finishing choral arrangements for both The Falcon and the Dove (El Cid) and A Hero Comes Home (Beowulf) for my upcoming Pops concert devoted to film/Bway/tv themes.
-
Last night I conducted my first joint choral/orchestral rehearsal for the Cantata/Oratorio we're doing for Christmas. Unfortunately one of my new, quite elderly trumpet players grossly exaggerated his ability to hit anything close to the appropriate note. I am hoping perhaps he figured out he wasn't able to play well enough and won't be back, or else I may need to gently suggest his talents might be best utilized elsewhere.

Some plusses, though, are that when she left NBC for ABC, it was her way of telling the world that NBC was -- and still is -- applying double standards when it came to their practices regarding men and women after a "certain age." Men were glorified and women put out to pasture. I've still never forgiven NBC for what they did to poor Jane Pauley...just forced her off the Today Show so that Bryant ("I Love Me, I hate Willard Scott") Gumbel took first chair and they brought in blonde Deborah Norville to do news and later moved into Pauley's spot (and NBC laid a bomb there, they did). Katie Couric did to Bryant what Bryant did to Jane, and Matt Lauer never had a prayer of supplanting Couric. But even Katie Couric defected to CBS when NBC would not consider her as a replacement for evening news anchor. Not that Couric lit any fires at CBS or with the public as Dan Rather's replacement. But the point was made that NBC found aging men more viable than aging women and preferred to preserve their biases rather than engage in positive social changes.
NBC...boo...hiss...!
And I loved Walters' sticking-up for Rosie and speaking out when Starr Jones was trashing "The View."
;)
-
But I'm here.
Did you get through "Abie's Irish Rose"? ;)
-
And speaking of shows closing... Well, I can not say, I simply can not say. Right now.

Speaking of game shows, I always used to love "The $20,000 Pyramid" with Dick Clark. :)
I posted my favorite interchanges from that show just a few days ago. "Not Tchaikovsky, the other one." "Beethoven." Priceless. (And correct).
The show was really lame with Donny Osmond hosting--one thing about Clark was that he could always hone in on a missed subject during the prize round, give the player one outstanding clue, and the player would usually get the answer. Osmond usually just stood there like so much fish (ooh, fish with legs, a Charles Darwin reference).
-
Speaking of Katie Couric, her face is starting to scare me. It looks like not only has she had Botox up the yin-yang, but her eyes are weird now, too.
-
Donny "Some of my best friends are gay (but they're damned to eternal hell anyway)" Osmond? ;)

Thank you!
Btw, it had been reported that Julianne Hough would not be on next season's DWTS so she could focus on her singing career. I think this would be a big blow to the show (i know she is my fav dancer) and to her career. I know she might want to be a singer. But to me she is just a good singer, but an exceptional dancer. The show would miss her!

Julianne Hough may be in 'Dancing with the Stars' next edition after all
By Christopher Rocchio, 12/01/2008
Julianne Hough's recent announcement that she wouldn't be participating in Dancing with the Stars' next season was apparently premature.
"I may have put my foot in my mouth when I said I wasn't going to come back next season," Hough told Entertainment Tonight following Dancing with the Stars' live seventh-season finale broadcast on Tuesday night. "I just meant that maybe I'll come back next season, maybe I won't."
The two-time Dancing with the Stars professional champ had previously stated she would not be back for the show's spring installment.
She subsequently reiterated the decision was "final" because she wanted to focus on her singing career and be "taken seriously" as a musician.
"Maybe I'll take a season off here -- like maybe this next one, maybe the one in the fall," Hough clarified to Entertainment Tonight. "But [I'm] definitely going to take one off to focus on the music."
Hough added "there's a chance" that she might still compete in the spring.
"We're still talking about it and everything," she told Entertainment Tonight. "So yeah, I said I might have put my foot in my mouth."

Yeah, I know that happens. It wasn't a matinee, it was the first day on this stage. They didn't finish loading in and setting up until mid day and the stage in the Orpheum is smaller tham a lot of other places so there were a couple spots where you could tell they were still adjusting.

Well the Spamalot second act may have been lacking in energy last night, but the Clark Transfer semis sure saw some excitement. A man was chasing his estranged wife in the car ramming into her as she drove down the street. It ended when she crashed into a light pole and he hit a parked semi-trailer.....one of the Spamalot trucks. Then he shot at her car hitting her in the arm...police arrived and he killed himself. The semis are in the news coverage. Luckily it wasn't the one that has the Spamalot logo on it. That's parked downtown.
Here's a link to some TV coverage. http://www.kmeg.com/default.asp Right now the video is on the right - the tractor trailers are at the end. They just look like tractor trailers, but you can see the whole drama played out right in front of them

Wowza! I was confused by how big my box of screeners was today, since I was only expecting 3 BD's--well it turns out I got the new huge Collector's Edition Blu-ray of Casablanca. It's a most impressive boxed set, with a hardback book and, in the kind-of-silly department, faux leather passport holder and luggage tags. Looks like it's a HD port of the previous deluxe SD extras, will have more to say later. Off to watch!

My goodness, I slept eleven and a half hours - a REAL eleven and a half hours. I guess if we divide that by two (for the night I didn't sleep at all) we get close to six hours, but boy I guess I needed that. I barely remember even getting into bed. And now, I must go do my errands and whatnot and that will be that for the day.

Once again, the elevator in my building is screwed up. I don't know why the idiot maintenance men who have been in the past two weeks are incapable of accomplishing anything that works. I reported it to the super, who got pissed at me and closed his door in my face, so after I carried three bages of groceries, an 8-lb carton from UPS and two packages up three flights of stairs, I just a sent a seething email to the management of the building. Stupid asses.
So much for the super's Christmas bonus.
-
And back to the chest of drawers. The frame is assembled now and looking great. All I have left are the drawers to put together. My trip to the library was nice, too, although I cannot tell how the Toronto production of BABES IN TOYLAND in 1925 had all the scenes listed in their program (14 changes) and still used the traditional stock-amateur libretto.

I got 8 episodes of TRANSFORMERS watched this afternoon. Only 2 left! Hooray!
-
On the subject of that CASABLANCA Blu-ray:
I'm just a little bit resentful that Warners didn't (yet) provide for a single Blu-ray of the film (as the HD-DVD was) instead of making folks who want it in HD pony up for that expensive collector's box. Yes, I know the new Blu-ray has a second disc of the Jack Warner documentary (in DVD, not Blu-ray as I understand it), but I don't need those extras, nice and fun as they may be. I'd just want the movie, but I'm not paying a premium price for a set I don't want just to get a HD version of the movie.
-
I got the firmware upgrades for the PS3 and the Samsung 1500 installed this afternoon, and both are running beautifully. I popped in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY in the Samsung to make sure it would play now (the other Bonds played perfectly before the upgrade; this one now plays without a hiccup).
-
To end the afternoon, I popped in HELLO, DOLLY and watched "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" in honor of WALL-E. I had been meaning to play the number ever since I reviewed WALL-E, and just now got around to it.

*Alas, I had planned to attend the Cupcake Party (http://www.rsscalendar.com/View.aspx?k=5c7f296d60eddef7ad1b8a7da2bcb99e) tonight at White Rabbit down in the Lower East Side, but after having a slightly longer afternoon than originally scheduled... and now that the rain has started, well...
**And there happened to be a box of cupcakes this afternoon at the casting office today, so... Just sayin'. :)

The Package should be sent to
(Address deleted for safety's sake - BK)
Thank You
-
And as for the forthcoming "closing" announcement, well... I'm sorry for dangling that bit of news out there. I'm also sorry for using the word "closing", since it's not really a closing of a show that is involved. However, I thought the official press announcement was supposed to occur this afternoon, but it appears that it hasn't, so...
We will all just have to wait.
;)

DR ArnoldMBrockman - You may want to delete that post and send a Private Message to bk. -Unless you want to have your home address out there for all the "phishers".
-
bk - Or you could delete the post once you've copied down the address.
-
DR Ron Pulliam - I believe in CostCo too. :)
*And I do hope they an in-stock replacement. I know that you can check stock online via CostCo.com for the stores in Virginia. Do you have that capability in the Bay Area?
-
And if there are any DRs who are still thinking about planning a trip for the holidays, now is a good time to start shopping for airfares. From the various e-mails and alerts I've been receiving over the past couple of days, it looks like the airlines are trying to fill those planes up. I've seen more than one offer for round-trip trips between JFK and LAX going for around $300, and some of the VirginAmerica FIRST CLASS fares are also steals depending upon your itinerary.
-
I've just finished the chest of drawers! All in all, it took me about 7 hours, and that's too much time out of my life.
I must say, though, it looks good!

Jose, the news is everywhere now - just not official.

Don't know where your image is, but we can now post photographs here again without Photobucket, although use the latter if you can so we don't fill up space so fast.
-
elmore, I've been so zonked I must have missed the post about your new computer - what did you buy? Did you get - FINALE? :)
-
Listening to CDs. Ate a foot-long Subway turkey sandwich for late lunch.
-
It actually wasn't very good - I must have gotten used to the really good food I was eating in NY - with no fast food for ten days I guess that can happen.
-
Jose, the news is everywhere now - just not official.
OK. Well, if you wish to share the news...
*And even though it is not closing in January, DR Michael S left off the limited run of The Seagull which closes as scheduled on December 21.
-
elmore, I've been so zonked I must have missed the post about your new computer - what did you buy? Did you get - FINALE? :)
I could always loan him my copy. ;D
-
And as for Finale...
I do use Finale, but I also use PrintMusic - which is Finale's "younger brother/sister" - and it's also $300 cheaper. Since the file formats are compatible between all of the various Finale products, I usually will start a file in PrintMusic, and then pretty it up in Finale. I find the PrintMusic interface a bit more user-friendly and intuitive since it does not include all those bells and whistles in Finale which I don't use.
*And if you buy Finale at the Juilliard Bookstore, you can buy it at the Educational Price.

I truly do not know. I can look later this evening. Otherwise, I'll learn tomorrow a.m. when I return the defective one.
-
And I've a "Twilight-Zone"-ish image in my mind after reading Jose's descriptive remark "...in his blue-eyed hands."

EXCELLENT visual, DR Edisaurus....now I can really have a nightmare. :)

On TV Tonight!™
CBS - SURVIVOR, CSI, ELEVENTH HOUR
ABC - UGLY BETTY, GREY'S ANATOMY, Barbara Walters special
NBC - comedies, ER
This is Barbara Walters' 10 most fascinating people of the year special I think.
Was it someone here who said that, based on her selections, Barbara Walters is easily fascinated?
Entertainment Weekly said that although the number one choice was still "top secret;" it was a pretty safe bet that it would not be Rosie O'Donnell.

Good Afternoon!
I had a lazy morning. Then I had a rushed morning. And my afternoon has gotten off to a good start, and I have a break coming up in a few. Alas, it looks like my break will be filled with a flurry of activity. But I'm here.
And some people said she's sincere.

I'll let the word become official, Jose. It's just been on all the usual sites - as soon as I heard the rumor I looked on the usual sites. I guess someone talked to someone on the creative team, although I'd first heard about it at the benefit.
-
And speaking of shows closing... Well, I can not say, I simply can not say. Right now.
:-X
What's left?

Thursday night comedies!

elmore, I've been so zonked I must have missed the post about your new computer - what did you buy? Did you get - FINALE? :)
The FINALE begins when I get back from holiday on Dec 30. I had a nice discussion yesterday with my tutor; I needed to find out which version of Finale I needed. No one he knows is using Finale 2009, and the PHI copyists use Finale 2006. So we'll begin with Finale 2006.

Now, I was very careful to say Broadway, not New York. I am well aware of the treasured friendships in New York.

Am I the only person that since election day has been bombarded with racial-stereotype jokes from their supposedly liberal and non-prejudicial friends? In the last few days I have received The New White House Secret Service Agent... The new White House garden..... and the new Presidential limo. I am shocked!
-
I guess I'll figure out what DVD I should watch this evening. I have a German set of Alfred Hitchcock Hours (unreleased in the States) - this is volume two (not sure if there's a volume three yet) and it contains the classic An Unlocked Window episode ("you're such a pretty nurse"). Or, maybe I'll take a drive instead and then come home and just listen to CDs. Maybe not. I've also got Lelouch's La Bonne Annee (Happy New Year) to watch - I haven't seen it in a few years (since the Image DVD came out) and I do love it. I think there are a few other things to look at including episodes of Riverboat, which I've never seen.

I haven't received or heard any racist jokes since the election. I certainly got a lot of horrifying anti-Obama/racist crap from the Southwestern Ohio Republicans that my brother passed on to me in September and October.

That's off-Broadway with no plans to transfer uptown.

Although, with some of the "buzz" and ticket sales (advance and otherwise) of some of the currently running and incoming shows - coupled with the current national and global economic situation, alas, it appears that even some of the "sure things" may not be so sure.

DR Jennifer - Have you tried downloading another browser? -My apologies if that has already been suggested.
I have another browser and did not work there either. And even weirder is i tried it on a different computer and it did not work there. It's not a canadian thing since it's worked here before and currently works at my sister's house.

There is a computer store in my home town that gives away a laptop computer every month....this month my dad was the winner!! Here he is with his prize
-
DR Cilla, luck Dad.:)
-
Christian Campbell is very cute.
-
He was so excited, as anyone would be. He called me at work and his voice was so lively my assistant thought he was my brother. He said that was the second thing that made his day.
The best part of this is that he was starting to look for a new computer and my mom was planning to redo a room for him to use as his den/office now that he is retired. She didn't like the idea of a great big desk top. Now he doesn't need to get a new one!

I have officialy lost 18.4 pounds since October 15th. I am most pleased. I got another gold star today :)

Congratulations on your gold star DR Cilla!

I"m not sure if this is considered a spoiler. it's re: American Idol and someone who supposedly made it to Hollywood (i guess don't read anymore if you don't want to know).
Actually i'm not sure anyone else here would know this person. But i think my 3 year old niece might have to start watching American Idol. One of her favorite people in the whole world is apparently on the show this year. She is very popular among the 3-5 year olds. Her name is Jennifer Peterson Hind and she is in the kids group Hi-5. I think on American Idol she is going by her married name Korbee. I have watched hours and hours of the group hi-5 and Jen is my favorite. It will be interesting to see what she does.
Here are a few other slightly well known people:

I finished the two remaining episodes of TRANSFORMERS, and may I say ANTICLIMACTIC! All those episodes for a pitiful resolution.
-
Since BONES was not on this week, I opened the third season box set and watched three episodes. So good, so fun; I love the show so much, even with the Gormogon storyline.
-
I also watched the bonus features which were on disc one: a gag reel and some vignettes on making various episodes. OK bonuses, but the shows are the thing.
-
UGLY BETTY had a good episode tonight with Amanda finally being humanized. I liked that.
-
I am so glad tomorrow is Friday. This has been quite a long week. Good week, productive week, but very long. It will be nice to have a weekend to myself. I can hang shades and may be even start on framing the window downstairs.
-
GREY'S ANATOMY: as usual, the patient stories were involving and I enjoyed all of them.
But oh, did I hate every single minute Calleigh was on the screen. Giggling and klutzy like some moron does not become Sarah.
-
And I watched THE OFFICE. Very funny from beginning to end.
-
I saved 30 ROCK to watch while I eat lunch tomorrow.
I've also decided that unless something comes in the mail tomorrow, I'm taking tomorrow off to just enjoy some things for me. I have only one review disc in my stack, and I can do it Saturday. Now, if I get something pressing in the mail tomorrow, I'll do it naturally, but after three full days of TRANSFORMERS, I need a break.
-
Heading down to bed now.
Good night!

You're very welcome, DR Tomovoz. Some of those shows are not slated to open until March or April, so be sure that DR Allan checks ahead of time. ;)

I decided to take a drive to Amoeba - had a bunch of trade stuff and got great credit for it - got several Oscar Peterson CDs I didn't have (I'm really on a Peterson binge right now), a couple of DVDs, and several other CDs, including the new South Pacific cast album. Amoeba had very few people in there tonight. I'm now watching a DVD (very short film), but I don't know if I'll finish it tonight.

Now wait just a darned minute - I posted at nine-thirty and it is now eleven and there have been NO posts? Well, this is not good, oh, no, this is NOT good.
