Well, you've read the notes, the notes did what the notes do, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having a Moo Do, and will be home directly after, or so they tell me.
-
And the word of the day is: SCAPEGRACE!
-
I have, in my time, been known as a scapegrace.
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
I think we should have a very large posting day today. I want to hear about all your plans for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
-
Wow, my old pal Candy Clark just found me on Facebook.
-
BK, Monday's Topic of the Day was this:
Our best-of 2008 continues – what are the ten best films you saw this year. And your ten worst. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as I continue to enjoy life without AOL.
-
Wow, did I not put mine? Well, I'll start with Wall-E - best of the year, but then again I haven't seen much. I am intending to see several movies during the next week, since we can now get in for free. I'll see Slumdog Millionaire and a couple others, probably on Friday.
-
C'mon, let's get a good head start here, or, at the very least, a good knee start.
-
Today, I have to get to my sister's house by 10:30 am and help her do some last minute shopping for tonight's get-together at our parents' house. We have to get the food and I don't know what else. Then, we'll all go to our parents' house. :)
-
At my niece's suggestion, I got my sister (shhh...don't tell her!!) a gift pack of two Starbuck's coffee mugs, two different kinds of Starbuck's coffee, a package of vanilla almond biscotti, two packages of peppermint dark chocolate and two packages of "black tea and herbal infusion"...whatever that means. Hilary (my niece) said that my sister wants this, so that's a good thing. When my sister and I go shopping, Hilary will wrap it for me.
-
It's so interesting seeing the old threads our GUESTS seem to love looking at. I just perused one from October of 2006, where I attended the Ray Courts show and there was a lively discussion of the removal of body hair.
-
I remember the glory days of late-night postings.
-
Those days seem to be done.
-
Of course, can you have days of late-night postings?
-
I will singlehandedly take us to page two.
-
Or not. I'm getting tired.
-
I'm getting tired.
-
I'm tired.
-
I suppose I shall now go to the bedroom environment, where I shall sleep and hopefully have nice dreams.
-
AARRGGHH!! I set my DVR to record Letterman but I forgot to set it to end later than the regular running time. It cut off only a minute into Darlene Love's song. :(
-
Perhaps I'll dream of tuna pasta salad or spaghetti - or donuts.
-
Perhaps I'll dream of electric sheep. What am I, Philip K. Dick all of a sudden? Or an android?
-
Perhaps I'll dream of tuna pasta salad or spaghetti - or donuts.
Oooo...donuts! ;D
-
I'm listening to some mighty strange music by Jeanine Tesori, written for a production of Twelfth Night.
-
I wonder how many guests we'll have the Do?
-
My goodness, we're actually pretty close to page two - haven't done THAT in a while.
-
I'm going for it.
-
Nothing can stop me now.
-
I am a BK on a mission.
-
So close...
-
And there you have it - no one can say we didn't get to page two.
-
And there you have it - no one can say we didn't get to page two.
Nope. :)
-
Last night, I watched the documentary on Grey Gardens and enjoyed it. I don't know the details of the backstage drama with the show’s producers, the Gondas, so I don't know what I'm missing. Right afterwards was another documentary called "Inheritance (http://www.amazon.com/Inheritance-Monika-Hertwig/dp/B0016OKR4I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1230109229&sr=1-1)," about a woman whose father was a Nazi named Amon Goeth, and he was played by Ralph Fiennes in "Schindler's List." Here's what the PBS website (http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2008/inheritance/) says about it:
Imagine watching Schindler's List and knowing the sadistic Nazi camp commandant played by Ralph Fiennes was your father. Inheritance is the story of Monika Hertwig, the daughter of mass murderer Amon Goeth. Hertwig has spent her life in the shadow of her father's sins, trying to come to terms with her "inheritance." She seeks out Helen Jonas, who was enslaved by Goeth and who is one of the few living eyewitnesses to his unspeakable brutality. The women's raw, emotional meeting unearths terrible truths and lingering questions about how the actions of our parents can continue to ripple through generations.
Talk about powerful. It was very emotional and very well done.
-
Inheritance is streaming in its entirety until January 4, 2009 (http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2008/inheritance/fullfilm.html). You can see the whole documentary on-line. I highly recommend it, but it is fairly graphic. It's not for those with delicate conditions.
-
My dad loves history (he got his B.A. in history after retiring from the army). My mom is German and was born in 1942. I don't think she'll ever see it (she doesn't talk much about the war) but my dad might.
-
And on that note (H...look it up ;)), I'm off to bed.
Have a Happy Christmas Eve Day, all!! ;D
-
DR George - what an ordeal at the DQ!!! Glad you were finally freed, with hunky assistance. ***RECOVERY VIBES*** for Ebonie!
-
***VIBES, VIBES, VIBES*** for DR TCB and his DF Stan!!!!!
-
DR FJL - that's fantastic about Paul Williams! :)
-
DR DtM - loved, loved, loved the photo tour last evening!!!! :)
-
***VIBES OF PATIENCE AND FORTITUDE*** for DR Cillaliz. And safe driving, too!!
-
DR Tomovoz - if you haven't heard of David Sedaris, you haven't been reading all the posts! ;) Enjoy your new discovery. He's a blast!
-
After singing the Chistmas Eve service, DH Jayson and Zach and I will be driving 3.5 hours to the southern NJ shore, where we will be joining my family for the next three days.
-
I loved Christmasvillagetown.
-
So, if Joshie loves you, and you love Christmasvillagetown, then does it follow that Joshie loves Christmasvillagetown?
-
Wasn't it Margo Channing who said: "Merry Christmas, Eve"
-
Logic always gave me a headache. :)
-
Or was that "It's just like New Year's, Eve"
(an Applause reference)
-
Jose, are you indeed bringing cookies tomorrow? And if so, do you know what kind, or will it be a spur-of-the-moment decision?
-
Joshie would love Christmasvillagetown. He would bat it all over the living room.
The Little Orange Kitten would have loved it, too.
-
bk wants lots of posts today.
-
With just a little effort, we could probably easily take this to page 3.
-
Unfortunately, I have to make an emergency trip to the dentist this morning.
-
Fortunately, he could fit me in.
-
I'm falling apart, I tell you!
-
Well, at least this part of the page will go quickly, for those ketchuping.
-
Christmas Eve morning greetings! Like DR Elmore's, our Tuesday evening plans were iced out, too. My niece drove from Illinois (in the storm) and was to pick up my mom and aunt and bring them here for dinner and presents. She got to Mom's and we decided not to risk having them come here, so Richard, Rob, Mary Linda, and I had a nice dinner and watched the latest X-Files movie. I left the dining room table set for 7, in case we decide to have our celebration today.
-
DR TCB - I'm so sorry to hear about Stan's setback. Vibes to him and to you.
-
And one more makes...
-
PAGE 3!!!!

EVERYONE!!!!! ;)
-
They are making me work today, and unfortunately, the hapless DearReaders are going to pay...
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
-
ASK BK
Have you ever received a gift you could wait to return or pass onto someone else? And what was it?
-
I am working today as well, but I have tomorrow off,

ASK BK #2
What was the to do with the producers of Grey Gardens?

-
DR Michael S. - HERE (http://www.nypost.com/seven/07182007/entertainment/theater/dismay_gardens_theater_michael_riedel.htm) is one take on it...
-
DR td - you're here!!??!! And not at the front lines of cash register madness!!!!! :)
-
And the word of the day is: SCAPEGRACE!
And The Song Of The Day Is: YOU'VE GOT TO PICK-A-POCKET OR TWO
-
Happy Christmas Eve, Y'all!
-
As Far As The Song Of The Day Is Concerned-I was Going to pick that old time standard
THE LADY IS A SCAMP
-
My plans for today will start with a quick run out to Macys, Barnes & Nobel and then to the ShopRite. There will be some last minute cleaning in the kitchen, some general vacuuming and Pledging, and then Mom and I will attend Christmas Eve Mass at St. Mary's in Delran, NJ.
Going to church will be a rather sad experience for my Mom and I this year. The church my family had been attending for thirty years since we moved to Pennsauken, St. Cecelia's, was one of the 75 closed down by the diocese this year due to dwindling attendence. Hopefully, Father O'Mally and Sister Benedict will welcome us with open arms.

Merry Christmas Eve to all who observe.
-
Happy
ThursdayWednesday* to all who are glad it's here.
*Yes, DR Jennifer, this IS Wednesday. Sigh.
-
Have a spectacular "Do", Bruce!
Have a Daring "Do", if you will.
"Do, Do, Do" what you've done so well before!
-
Merry Christmas Eve to all who observe.
My eyes are playing tricks on me because i read, "Merry Christmas to all who deserve".
:)

Vibes to Stan. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I need to get out of my fudge funk.
When i got up today it was still not hard enough. So i tried plans B and C. I think the truffles idea would have been a good one. But they just would not roll properly. So i tried reheating and resetting it. Although i don't expect this to work.
At least the maple fudge came out very well.
It's just that i've never followed a recipe before and had it not turn out. And now like i said it's put me in a kind of funk. I still need to make meatballs and 7 layer taco dip.
-
I really hope the weather cooperates. It snowed all night (i think around 10 cms). It is supposed to continue to snow this morning. Then have some ice pellets in the early afternoon. Then change to rain. I just hope that somehow the rain is rain and does not freeze making driving difficult.
-
Happy Thursday to all who are glad it's here.
Isn't today wednesday?
-
DR George can you catch the parts of LETTERMAN that you missed either on cbs.com or youtube?
-
Thanks to reading about DR Cillaliz's calendar it reminds me i need to wrap the one i made for my sister. I made it at a local pharmacy. It has different huge pics of my niece. It came out really well!
-
And i also need to wrap some pins i made. I have these blank pins and charm bracelets. And you laminate pictures in them.
-
DR George i'm just catching up on last night's late posts. And your suggestion of ice cream topping (for the soft fudge) was my mom's suggestion too.
-
DR Jane re: freezing wedding cake. I know people freeze it. But do some people just save it?
We actually kept flowers from my sister's wedding (6 years ago) in the fridge. And they are still there! And doing well!
-
Good morning, all! Before I got up, Randy and Jo had a helluva row so it's quite tense here this morning. I should have known we were heading into strange waters because I had very strange dreams last night: the cabaret act of the early 1980s that I was arranging for, "Just good friends," had a reunion and were performing again and the band was made up of several musicians who recorded for me and BK in the 1990's. It was all quite exciting and fun and I woke up thinking WHAT THE HELL????
This morning, I have a trip to Fed Ex and to a bakery in Franklin with my friend Alan. After that I have to wrap Randy's and Jo's gift, and i may have dinner with my friend Loyce, who had a lousy night getting home in yesterday's brouhaha.
So, Christmas Eve vibes for all the DRs and those they love!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
DR Jose i'm just reading your fudge suggestions now.
Yes i am realizing that hte marshmellows are what caused it not to set properly.
And i did actually end up reheating it.
The interesting part is that when i put it in the fridge yesterday after putting all the marshmellow cream it was very thick and frothy. But when i reheated it all that frothiness from the marshmellows was completely gone.
This recipe with the marshmellow creme was very highly recommended. and supposedly fool proof. :)
Mostly it was the only recipe i found that used different flavored chocolate chips. and that was what i wanted to try.
Thanks for the tips.
-
IT's the 24th!!!
TOD:
How did it get here so suddenly? How will I finish everything by today and tomorrow? Luckily (of sorts), it's a hard-candy Christmas season, so there isn't as much to do other than be there for other people, but still.....
I'm off to take Sugar for a walk (and my muscles are not inspired to move at the moment), but seeing her is my present! So I shall stretch the OLD legs and then drive over to see her!
I get to drive my former mother-in-law to an early get-together to maintain some sense of family/continuity. I have high hopes, high in the sky hopes it wil be nice.
I'll catch up later. Love, travel and health vibes to all!
-
I love Mitzi Gaynor, and I like the fact that she always dresses up and knows how to look like somebody!
-
Dear Esteemed BK:
Will you be regaling your guests at today's do with a retelling of the classic story, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Randy Vicar?
I do hope so. Classic is classic, after all.
-
Workies.
A nice long day of cashiering, to be followed by breakfast and preparing for tomorrow's festivities with der B's clan.
-
And make sure DR Noel helps with the dishes!
;D

Travel and relative vibes for all of those visiting and sharing today and tomorrow.
-
It is nearly 40 degrees today with a lot of rain. So no chance of being like DR GEORGE and getting stuck at the DQ!
DR DtM - I enjoyed the pictures of Christmasvillage Town....but I really liked the train ride! What fun. Thanks so much! I almost needed my Dramamine!
-
Today is the day of MR BK's Christmas Eve do....so vibes for pleasant company and good food for all!
-
My wife and I will be going to BK's Do tonight.
-
Looking forward to it.
-
It should be fun.
-
Lots of fun!
-
My question for ASK BK day.....which films do you think most accurately captured the fashion of the day?
I don't think we can include a film like FUNNY FACE - while it was a perfect picture of 1957 couture - it's subject was fashion - so I mean a film where the clothes were not the focus, but did show us how people dressed at that time the film was made....so no period pictures, please.
-
In case you're wondering what I'm doing: I'm shooting for my 500th post, so that I can achieve "Hero" status.
-
That is the magic number, isn't it?
-
So, what happens after you achieve "Hero" status?
-
Are there no other goals to shoot for?
-
No other challenges?
-
Only 15 more to go.
-
As for CIMMARRON....
Well I liked Mr Glen Ford and Ms Maria Schell. And the land rush was pretty terrific....and horrific.....
But I don't like Arthur O'Connell or Mercedes McCambridge - so their characters were completely superfluous for me....and irritating. I thought Ms Aline MacMahon was great as were Harry Morgan and Russ Tamblyn. And the music was great.
Anne Baxter was pretty much wasted and looked ridiculous in those jeans and a corset to give her that TINY waist....and all that hair.
-
So, what happens after you achieve "Hero" status?
YOU BECOME A HERO NATURALLY

You always ask the hardest questions.

I pretty much agree with you.
I like Anthony Mann's westerns, but this was one of his weakest.
-
I wish WHV would release Mann's DEVIL'S DOORWAY w/Robert Taylor onto DVD.
That one is a gem.
-
Comes from my years as a journalist.

Druxy-
Since I might not be around this site when you do become a Hero I now offer my
C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S ! ! !
-
I guess the Devil's Doorway was what Anne Baxter played in CIMMARRON!
-
That was an interesting article about the Gondas, DR SINGDAW.....didn't MR BK have some similar dealings with them? I think he went to school with the Mrs........
-
So, what happens after you achieve "Hero" status?
YOU BECOME A HERO NATURALLY
You mean I have to go out an rescue somebody from a burning building? A raging fire?
;)

I wonder if little orange kitty is climbing a new tree today?
-
I wonder if little orange kitty is climbing a new tree today?
Okay, I'll call the fire department.
-
Comes from my years as a journalist.
What was/is "your beat"?
Did you know Harry Pennypacker?
::)
-
I'm trying to decide whether to see GRAN TORINO or BENJAMIN BUTTON tomorrow.
-
I also want to see DOUBT before the end of the year.
-
No I did not know Harry.
My beat was high school sports locally.....where all you got was phone calls wondering why you didn't cover the Girls Squirrel Chases and list all of the kids who stayed on the bench during the JV basketball game.
-
No I did not know Harry.

-
Almost there.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And it's Christmas Eve!
-
And it's also raining in New York City.
-
I watched about 30 minutes of Dave last night, so I didn't see DR JOSE in the audience!
The Squirrel Chases always took place at the same time as the Tennis Ball Eating Contests. I could only be in one place at a time.
-

I'd have to think about movies, but MAD MEN sure does it for TV. Unbelievable how that series just takes you right back to 1960/1963 for the first two seasons.
-
And the sublettor just woke up... And now she's rushing around trying to figure out what to do since she was supposedly hosting a small lunch here for some of her friends at Noon... And she had meant to make a grocery store run earlier this morning so that she could cook said lunch...
-Ah, nothing like a bit of schaudenfreude on Christmas Eve. ;D
-
Good morning!
A bit warmer this morning, and the clouds have been playing hide and seek with the sun all morning. Presently the clouds are winning, and we ARE supposed to get rain today, so I guess that's as it should be.
-
DR George - I don't think "Letterman" ran over last night. Does your DVR/Tivo have the time slot set from 11:38-12:38?
-
I have a 2 1/2 hour made-for-TV film waiting for me this afternoon: CARTESIUS. I can't say that I'm exactly looking forward to it after yesterday's 4 1/4 hour marathon mini-series (though the last third really was fascinating and a great way to end an otherwise ponderous experience).
-
I agree with MAD MEN, DR MATTH - but I am looking for movies made at the time the fashions were current.
-
I AM looking forward to watching last night's LEVERAGE while I eat lunch today. That should be very entertaining. And I'll likely start on disc 2 of NCIS-Season Three today, too. Tonight, I'll likely find a movie to watch. I have a few here to pick from.
-
I agree with MAD MEN, DR MATTH - but I am looking for movies made at the time the fashions were current.
I understand completely. I guess I just wanted another chance to plug the great MAD MEN.
The first one that leaps to mind is TO CATCH A THIEF. I think the styles are kind of overdone in something like THE WOMEN (certainly Roz Russell's clothes), but I'd have to watch the movie again to get a good sense of what all of the other women are wearing.
-
DR FJL - I had indeed planned to bring some cookies tomorrow - at least one batch of my Chocolate-Chip-Oatmeal-Pecan-Toffee ones. However, I didn't realize that I may be competing for oven time here at the apartment tonight and tomorrow morning. So...
I'm bringing cookies. :)
*But don't let that deter Skip from making a dessert or two. ;)
-
My mom and niece have scrubbed their trip to Michigan, so we're having our dinner for 7 tonight. Cranberry Pork Roast is in the crockpot, green beans will soon be simmering with ham, and I'm about to start a batch of caramel corn. That last isn't for dinner, but for some gifts that we want to deliver tomorrow.
-
THIEF is a good choice. My first thought was PILLOW TALK for Doris's Jean Louis clothes and Rock and Tony's very nice suits and jackets. 1959 never looked so good.
For years, I thought that dress Doris wore to the nightclub was black.....but it is a deep maroon/or plum red....wow!
-
Most of Roger Corman's contemporary movies are good, too. Jackie Joseph has said that wardrobe coordinator Marj Corso had a budget and just took the girls to JAX where they bought clothes off the rack for everyone.
Some of the actresses in B movies also furnished their own wardrobe.
-
ASK BK
Have you ever received a gift you could wait to return or pass onto someone else? And what was it?
Not really - I like all gifts - maybe if I received foolish-looking underpants I'd return them.
-
At the encouragement of - and after some suggestions from - some chatters, I did a redraft of the "Fish" number (a parody, to the tune of Zip), and wanted to get that version on the permanent innernet also :)
(to the tune of Zip)
[verse]
I’ve dined with the A.R. Gurneys
Spent New Year’s at Julia Murney’s
I’ve met every stage star livin’
But my happiest moment
Is the tete-a-tete I had
When I ate with Jeremy Piven
I met him outside his thee-ter
And he couldn’t have been much sweeter
I said “Mr. P you are such a trooper
Tell me how you never miss
How do you do eight shows a week?”
And he said “When I act
My mind goes something like this.”
[1st chorus]
Fish!
The sashimi wasn't brilliant today
Fish!
Does McDonald's have to fry its filet?
Fish!
I was eating Arthur Treacher's last night
Fish!
And I think that Arthur Treacher's not right
I have eaten at Kodama
That's what started all this drama
Fish -
I love every morsel
Anything that's in the ocean
If they sell it at Petrossian
Fish -
I am poly-dorsal
Fish!
I had more than any doctors allow
Fish!
What the hell is Speed-the-Plow?
[2nd chorus]
Fish!
Why does seafood come in so many brands?
Fish!
David Mamet sometimes eats with his hands
Fish!
English people don’t say fries, they say chips
Fish!
Lizzie Moss has such spectacular lips
I don't want a Nathan's weenie
Get beluga on a blini
Fish!
I’d be so ecstatic
I don't need to call a gal up
Just get me a giant scallop
Fish!
I’m so damn aquatic
Fish!
It took mercury to make me get meek
Fish!
I can't do the show this week!
-
Oy. Guess what it's doing outside.
-
ASK BK #2
What was the to do with the producers of Grey Gardens?
There was a whole lot of drama surrounding the closing of the show and the reasons for it. I believe by that point the producers had alienated their leading lady and others - you can probably Google and find the story.
-
We hunkered down and watch Wall-E on BD last night--very sweet film, probably my fave Pixar since Toy Story 2.
-
My question for ASK BK day.....which films do you think most accurately captured the fashion of the day?
I don't think we can include a film like FUNNY FACE - while it was a perfect picture of 1957 couture - it's subject was fashion - so I mean a film where the clothes were not the focus, but did show us how people dressed at that time the film was made....so no period pictures, please.
North By Northwest comes to mind - Casablanca - I'm sure others will think of others.
-
Yes, I'll be telling many Randy Vicar stories this evening.
-
DR FJL - it just gets better and better.....
-

What? Not the 1939 version of THE WOMEN?
-
I'm up, it's very gray out but not raining. I really thought I'd be sleeping a little later today but alas that is not the case. And I was up until two watching act one of the Kevin and Sean show, which we're going to start editing at some point next week (although for the initial stages of that I don't really have to be there much).
-
I'll see about the long jog, which I'd really like to do.
-
Red flowered dress in NORTH BY NORTHWEST is classic - wow!
DR JMK I guess that THE WOMEN is sort of a fashion movie, and all the women were dressed so in character that I can't imagine a lot of those clothes being worn off screen....except maybe Norma's.
-
Hello, everyone.
I have to drop off some presents today and talk again to the settlement attorney. I truly need a break and hope to spend some time over the next several days relaxing, but we'll see. I woke up this morning thinking about packing and who might want the many things I won't be taking. Until more is behind me I won't really be able to relax. Christmas? Very minimal.
-
Breathe, DR JEANNE.
-
I watched about 30 minutes of Dave last night, so I didn't see DR JOSE in the audience!
The Squirrel Chases always took place at the same time as the Tennis Ball Eating Contests. I could only be in one place at a time.
I imagine that choosing which one of these spectacular events to cover would be a very difficult decision.
-
Personally, being an animal lover, I'd have gone for the squirrels.
-
MERRY CHRISTMAS to ALL AT HHW!!
-
Breathe? You mean I'm supposed to do that, too???
-
500!

Red flowered dress in NORTH BY NORTHWEST is classic - wow!
DR JMK I guess that THE WOMEN is sort of a fashion movie, and all the women were dressed so in character that I can't imagine a lot of those clothes being worn off screen....except maybe Norma's.
I could barely imagine most of those clothes being worn on screen!
-
Jrand - Soon it'll be so much better no one will be able to stand it any more :) :)
-
Gotta scoot.
TTFN.
-
DR Dan (the Man) - Thanks for the trip around and around and around and around Christmasvillagetown! That was awesome, dude! :)
-
DR Jeanne - Yes, you must take a moment or two to breathe. Or at least have a cup of hot cocoa... That you've been stirring with a candy cane. :)
-
Well, I do want to make it to MoMA this afternoon, and since they're closing at 3:00, well...
Laters...
-
Forgot to mention that the new Kritzerland title is now up at www.kritzerland.com - and you can get a preview of the score by listening to the audio samples.
-
Woke up to about twenty orders - it will be sold out by Thursday, which is amazing during the Christmas season.
-
LOL DR FJL....
-
Congratulations to DR DRUXY - the animal lover - on 500 posts.
-
CONGRATULATIONS to DR Druxy on becoming a hero! :)

Great, DR FJL!!!! :D
-
Watching BUNDLE OF JOY on TCM. Debbie Reynolds is a lot fun - although Ginger Rogers was better in the original. And I remember that Mr Eddie Fisher blamed his poor performance on the director.
-
Back from the dentist. My rear-most wisdom tooth partially cracked off, below the gum line. My doctor worked his usual magic. Time shall tell if that did the trick, or if the tooth will ultimately have to be removed. Thank G-d for insurance!!

Did he blame the director for BUTTERFIELD 8, too?

I want to thank BK, the members of the Academy, my cast and crew...for making this moment possible.

LOL! Gave me my first big laugh of the day. Thanks, DR Singdaw.

Glad you liked the Gonda article, DR JRand58. There's plenty more where that came from!

Holy Moly! It is LATE! I guess my morning workout and my morning internet surf took a very long time this morning.
Must go down now to check the mail (I saw the UPS truck nearby but wasn't sure if the fella dropped anything off here) and then fix myself something for lunch.
WBBL.
-
Heating up the house. It's been sixty-two every morning and it takes about an hour to get it warmer.
-
I'm thinking the jog will be at ten, maybe a little earlier, but it looks very chilly out.
-
Nita Talbott certainly had an unusual look and was very good in BUNDLE OF JOY. I also thought she was very good in THAT FUNNY FEELING in support of Sandra Dee.
IMBD says she played Maggie Prescott (the Kay Thompson role) in a TV pilot of FUNNY FACE - not the Sandy Duncan series. She would have been great in that! (Frank Aletter was in the Fred Astaire role of Dick).
-
DR SINGDAW.....that just gets scarier. Hopefully MY MAN GODFREY will die a death on the road.
-
Listening to a Cy Coleman promo I found - filled with selections from his various and sundried shows - love Cy.
-
I haven't heard about The Little Orange Kitten today. Yesterday they called because they couldn't find her. Well, they had the kitten, but she wasn't in the database -- someone must have typed in a wrong number somewhere. I don't know if that means they can't adopt her out until they have their records corrected or not.
Adoptions start in about 45 minutes for today. I hope she goes quickly. If not, we will bring her home tonight so she doesn't have to sit all day in a cage tomorrow.
-
Too cold in the home environment. However, the temperature has risen to sixty-six.
-
Watching BUNDLE OF JOY on TCM. Debbie Reynolds is a lot fun - although Ginger Rogers was better in the original. And I remember that Mr Eddie Fisher blamed his poor performance on the director.
Did he blame the director for BUTTERFIELD 8, too?
No doubt he'd have loved laying the blame at Joe Mankiewicz' feet for the Liz-Dick affair, too!
-
Here's hoping that DR Jeanne can find some moments of respite in the days ahead.
At least I don't think all the stores are sold out of respite, yet.
-
laying the blame at Joe Mankiewicz' feet
That would be quite a feat!
-
BK -- will there be lovely photos of the guests at tonight's "Do"?
-
COMING SOON TO A LIVING ROOM NEAR DR Ron Pulliam:
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z191/HEAVEN13TH/HORRORS/TheBadSeed.jpg)
-
Still numbed up and trying to eat my lunch.
And trying also not to drool on myself.
Not necessarily in that order.
-
If we HAVE guests there will be photographs galore. I've gotten a couple of e-mails saying a couple of regulars won't be here. Ah, well, more spaghetti for everyone else.
-
Here's a little "White Christmas" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1GPxcxrBkI)for anyone needing a bit of seasonal cheer!
-
A friend of mine was working the floor at a newly opened Macy's out in the suburbs many years back. It was near the holiday season, and for background music, they apparently only had one or two seasonal CDs, one of which was Barbra Streisand's first Christmas album. So it got played. And played. Repeatedly.
So when I was in the supermarket yesterday and heard Babs's hyper-frenetic version of "Jingle Bells" come over the wire, I thought of him and couldn't stop smiling.
-
Here's a little "White Christmas" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1GPxcxrBkI) for anyone needing a bit of seasonal cheer!
I'm thinking DR JMK needs him some of that!!! ;) [The white part, at any rate...]
-
So, DR MBarnum...is Freddie the cat getting a GPS collar from Santa this year? :)
-
Interesting question DR JRand. I will ponder that.
-
DR Singdaw, I will jus have to rely on Freddy's internal GPS for now.
-
Watching BUNDLE OF JOY on TCM.
A former publicity client of mine, a famous comedian who will remain nameless because I don't want to embarrass him, once told me that the person we are talking about is "definitely the dumbest person in show business".
-
I think the girl at Starbucks gave me regular instead of decaf.
-
LOL.....why does this not surprise me, DR DRUXY?
-
I think the girl at Starbucks gave me regular instead of decaf.
Sue!
-
singdaw - Freddie is me, the cat is Freddy. Otherwise, how could anyone tell the difference? :)
-
Jrand -
I think her name was Pam, not Sue.
-
This is a most silly-headed day for me. Maybe too much coffee.
-
Dan the Man, I, too, loved, loved, loved the tour of Christmasvillagetown. And the narration was as good as the pictures. I have bookmarked the Youtube sequence and will watch it later.
-
Fred, the Zip parody is priceless! Great work. Thanks for posting it.
-
I should do the long jog but it looks so CHILLY out. And it looks like it might rain. What to do? If I do the long jog I can EAT MORE tonight. I must do it.
-
Jrand -
I think her name was Pam, not Sue.
I stand corrected. So Sue Pam.
-
Thanks, Ben!
-
Jog more - eat more. It's a mantra.
-
I stand corrected too, now that I have my orthopedics.
-
Something must be in the air at Manhattan Plaza.
-
It looks so CHILLY out.
-
Thanks for clearing that up, DR FJL! :)
-
I was liable to become confuddled.
-
Or confounded.
-
Either way, it's not good.
-
I stand corrected too, now that I have my orthopedics.
I thought you looked taller.
-
Jrand, films that I think have a good representation of the eras clothing would include:
1930s: Many good examples, but I will mention MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM as one that represents the early 30s very well, I think. Here you will see Fay Wray and Glenda Farrell in typical attire of the day.
(http://i3.ebayimg.com/04/i/000/ag/e4/6e12_1.JPG)
-
1940s: Any of Universal's films of that decade...Vera West created the most wonderful outfits, what with those hats and dresses that were worn by Evelyn Ankers, Anne Gwynne, Lois Collier, et al...their shoulders were bigger then the actors'. The men's suits had a very nice cut and the ties were great.
I love this era of clothing and here are some fine examples of Vera West's work.

Kitty vibes for DR George. I remember last year’s scare & hope this is far less frightening.
And karma vibes to all the nice people who helped you yesterday.
-
Unfortunately, I have to make an emergency trip to the dentist this morning.
:(
-
DR Jane re: freezing wedding cake. I know people freeze it. But do some people just save it?
We actually kept flowers from my sister's wedding (6 years ago) in the fridge. And they are still there! And doing well!
Now you tell me about the flowers-lol. I think they are far too wilted to save. As for the cake I think you have to freeze it. Usually there is a top layer cake & the frosting helps keep it fresh.
-
My wife and I will be going to BK's Do tonight.
Have fun. If we were in L.A. we would have to miss it and go to my brother's house.
-
Back from the dentist. My rear-most wisdom tooth partially cracked off, below the gum line. My doctor worked his usual magic. Time shall tell if that did the trick, or if the tooth will ultimately have to be removed. Thank G-d for insurance!!
:) vibes it holds!
-
Thanks, DR Jane!! :)
-
I hope DR Cilla has a good time with her family.
I hope DR elmore's dear brother & sister-in-law make up quickly.
Happy Christmas Eve!
Happy Chanukah!

For the 1950s, I think that AIP of all the studios, did the best job of representing the clothing of the late 1950s...and that might be because so many of the actors and actresses wore clothing out of their own closet...
This shirt worn by John Ashley in DRAGSTRIP GIRL is a good example.
(http://i370.photobucket.com/albums/oo146/mbarnum/johnashley.jpg)
RUNAWAY DAUGHTERS is another example of the wardrobe used in AIP films of the 1950s.

Yukon Gold Potatoes: Jacques Pepin Style [Rachel Ray]
Prep Time: 5 min
Cook Time: 20 min
Level: Easy
Serves: 6 servings
3 pounds baby Yukon gold potatoes
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
3 cups chicken stock
3 tablespoons butter
2 to 3 tablespoons freshly chopped parsley leaves
Place the potatoes in a deep skillet and add salt and pepper, to taste. Cover potatoes halfway with chicken stock, about 3 cups, add the butter and cover skillet with a lid. Cook the potatoes in the stock until almost tender, about 5 to 8 minutes, depending upon the size of the potatoes. Remove the lid and allow the stock to evaporate, about another 5 minutes. Once the stock has evaporated pop each potato using a ladle or large spoon, creating a small crack in each, but do not smash. Allow the potatoes to brown on each side, another 5 minutes, and re-season with salt and pepper, if necessary or desired. Remove the browned potatoes from the skillet and place onto a serving platter, garnished with the parsley.
-
Well, that was a first. The UPS truck was just here. There was a driver and a runner. Very efficient.

Ina Garten's Fruitcake Cookies
Nobody really likes fruitcake, but they love these cookiestheyre so delicious!
Ingredients
½ pound dried figs
¼ pound raisins
¼ pound candied cherries, coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoons dry sherry
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
6 ounces chopped walnuts
kosher salt
½ pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ cup superfine sugar
1/3 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1 extra-large egg
2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
Procedure
Snip off the hard stems of the figs with scissors or a small knife and coarsely chop the figs. In a medium bowl, combine the figs, raisins, cherries, honey, sherry, lemon juice, walnuts, and a pinch of salt. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to sit overnight at room temperature. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter, cloves, superfine sugar, and brown sugar on medium speed until smooth, about 3 minutes. With the mixer on low speed, add the egg and mix until incorporated. With the mixer still on low, slowly add the flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt and mix just until combined. Dont overmix! Add the fruits and nuts, including any liquid in the bowl. Divide the dough in half and place each half on the long edge of a 12 3 18-inch piece of parchment or wax paper. Roll each half into a log, 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches thick, making an 18-inch-long roll.
Refrigerate the dough for several hours, or until firm.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
With a small, sharp knife, cut the logs into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Place the slices 1/2 inch apart on ungreased sheet pans and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until lightly golden.

There was a driver and a runner.
It works best if the runner outpaces the driver.

I wanted to wish you all a Mappy(Merry + Happy) ChristmaHannaKwanzadon!!!!!! (Christmas + Hannakah(?) + Kwannza + Ramadon).
I also wanted to thank you all again for your support through these tough times. The household seems pretty good though at the moment *insert exploding noise here* ... *insert Vixter cursing noises here* but anyway, I hope your holidays are all happy, safe, and bright!!!!

Nice to see you posting, The Vixter! Mappy Holidays to you, too.

Ina Garten's Fruitcake Cookies
Nobody really likes fruitcake, but they love these cookiestheyre so delicious!
Actually, DR singdaw, I have a fruitcake recipe that's quite wonderful, but I do detest commercial fruitcake, Dolly Madison's or a Trappist monk's, among others.
I've run errands with my friend Alan, wrapped Randy's and Jo's gifts, and I will leave around 4 to see my friend Loyce and have dinner with her and others.
So, BK, I wish tonight's Do a huge success, I wish DR singdaw a safe dental trip, and I wish everyone else a joyous day. I'm gonna watch the soaps with Jo.
-
DR td - you're here!!??!! And not at the front lines of cash register madness!!!!! :)
Wednesdays are my day(s) at Mulligan's Clubhouse Grill. . .as are Saturdays. ;)
-
MERRY XMAS VIXTER
-
Good Afternoon!
Greetings from MoMA's Cafe 2 where I just enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Eve lunch.
*And I also enjoyed their Peppermint Hot Chocolate. The Peppermint came from schapps. And from the way it tasted - and the way I feel right now - there was a lotta schnapps in that cup. <hiccup>
-
Merry Christmas to you too DR vixter!
-
Happy holidays DR Vixter! And please give your mom a hug from me!!
-
OK Time for me to take another walk through the Van Gogh exhibit. Hopefully, I won't be stumbling. Or breathing on too many people.
Laters...
<hiccup>
-
Merry Christmas DR Vixter. It was nice to see you posting. :)
-
I, for one, love fruitcake.
-
Back from the long jog - very chilly out, but I got it done and now I shall start preparing SAUCE.
-
Happy Holidays to THE VIXTER and her family!
-
Yes, DRMBARNUM - Vera West at Universal did some wonderful work in the 30's and 40's. I don't think she is as celebrated as some of her contemporaries.
-
I, for one, love fruitcake.
Me too, if it is good & has some cake in it. I don't like the kind that is mostly dried fruit.
-
Gee.....Vera West died in 1947 at the age of 49. She worked on over 300 films at Universal beginning in 1931. But of course if she was the department head, she might have had the screen credit although others did some of the work.
-
Yikes this is kind of creepy.
http://1947project.blogspot.com/2005/06/vera-west-did-not-pay-blackmail-mate.html
Her life would have made a great Universal movie:

Will we never get to page ten?
-
Mushrooms are sliced.
-
Onion will be diced momentarily.
-
I'm listening to a marvelously marvelous Christmas album conducted by Alfred Newman and Carmen Dragon.
-
Yes, JRand, Vera West's death always seemed a bit fishy to me.
-
DanTheMan, thank you so much for the wonderful trip through Christmasvillagetown! I love it...both the still photos and the virtual train tour.
-
Happy holiday, Vixter! And best wishes to your heroic family, too.
-
Today I'm shlepping my disabled cousin around for various and sundried errands... I think I'll delay all that until late this afternoon, which means I can dress for the BK Christmas Eve Do before said shleppage, then drop her off, and head straight down the 101 to Laurel Canyon. Such a good plan!!
-
I need to get out of my fudge funk.
DR Jennifer, I think you have a new Christmas song in the making there...
-
I love fruitcake. Sadly. I just ate a whole one (small, though) over the past 6 days. Loved the apricots and pecans. Grateful nobody makes it except at these holidaze.
-
Sounds like a plan, DR PENNYO!
-
DR Tomovoz - if you haven't heard of David Sedaris, you haven't been reading all the posts! ;) Enjoy your new discovery. He's a blast!
We brought two David Sedaris CD collections for our drive across the mountains yesterday. They made the trip quite pleasant.
-
Hello all. as you can probably guess from my previous post, we have made it safely over the river and through the woods (and over the snowy mountains) and we are now safe in Ellensburg with our families. We are hanging out in my old bedrooms, DH Jed is reading and I am nursing the little man and catching up on posts. From downstairs the delicious smells of mom cooking our Christmas Eve dinner are wafting.
I hope the 'Do at Chez BK is splendidly splendid tonight.
-
It is nearly 40 degrees today with a lot of rain. So no chance of being like DR GEORGE and getting stuck at the DQ!
DR DtM - I enjoyed the pictures of Christmasvillage Town....but I really liked the train ride! What fun. Thanks so much! I almost needed my Dramamine!
Well, then it's a good thing that the battery on my camera ran out of power because I had planned on finishing the trip by running the train in reverse!
-
I know we have been requesting a lot of HHW vibes these day, but if you find a few spare ones rattling around in your pocket, could you send them towards my supervisor, Julia? She is on a three week trip to Guinea with a group from the states, and if you've seen world news today you know that their long time dictator/president died yesterday and now the military is claiming that they are taking over the country. I'm sure she's safe, but it might be awhile before she can come home.
-
! ! ! ! ! Welcome to Herodom, DR Druxy ! ! ! ! !

I remember John Ashley. He, Nick Adams and Robert Conrad were very good friends.
About 100 years ago, I tried to put together a picture with those 3 guys in the cast, but the money was not to be found. T.V. Mikels was going to be the cinematographer.
-
I'm trying to decide whether to see GRAN TORINO or BENJAMIN BUTTON tomorrow.
Or you can go see VALKYRIE and find out why...
"We have to kill Hitler!"
-
Did I actually hear Clint Eastwood say "You kids get off my lawn!" in the GRAN TORINO trailer? Will that become the latest tough-guy catch phrase?
-
I'm trying to decide whether to see GRAN TORINO or BENJAMIN BUTTON tomorrow.
Or you can go see VALKYRIE and find out why...
"We have to kill Hitler!"
VALKYRIE is a movie for DVD.
-
At the encouragement of - and after some suggestions from - some chatters, I did a redraft of the "Fish" number (a parody, to the tune of Zip), and wanted to get that version on the permanent innernet also :)
(to the tune of Zip)
ROTFLMAO!!!
-
Nick Adam John Ashley and Robert Conrad......you would have had to find three really short leading ladies.
-
It is nearly 40 degrees today with a lot of rain. So no chance of being like DR GEORGE and getting stuck at the DQ!

Whew that was close!

Nick Adam John Ashley and Robert Conrad......you would have had to find three really short leading ladies.
We had Gigi Perreau.
-
Oy. Guess what it's doing outside.
Raining?
-
Yuletide greetings from the land down under where it is Christmas morning 7.30am. Have a safe and happy festive season everyone.
-
DR Tomovoz - if you haven't heard of David Sedaris, you haven't been reading all the posts! ;) Enjoy your new discovery. He's a blast!
I didn't read this one either DR BellJingle. Next you'll be telling me there are notes every day
-
Thank you for the train ride DR DtM.
Who was that kid?
-
Congratulations to DR Druxy for joining us in the clouds!

It's not snowing in "Austria".
I wonder if it is snowing in Portland OR.

Again?

I wish everyone here at haineshisway.com could be here this festive evening.

I was liable to become confuddled.
You have been liable for a great many things!
-
Presents delivered, a couple more errands run. And I'm OFF for the day!
Thanks to Jrand and Jose for the reminders to breeeeaaathe.
Glad your dental work went relatively well, Sing. I hope it remains satisfactory.
Vibes to all.
-
I, for one, love fruitcake.
I, for one, have been loved by fruitcakes.
-
Thanks, DR Jeanne!
-
I heard that, DR TCB!!!!!!
-
***SAFETY VIBES***
for Julia, supervisor of DR Ann!!!!
-
I should be packing. Instead, I'm frittering away with the posts. Yes, I said frittering. :)
-
I, for one, have been loved by fruitcakes.
Prove it! ;)
-
Nick Adam John Ashley and Robert Conrad......you would have had to find three really short leading ladies.
Maybe they wouldn't need any leading ladies.
-
There must be something terribly wrong with the YouTube servers. They are reporting that our DR DtM is only 24 years old! ;)
-
I heard that, DR TCB!!!!!!
:-*
-
Maybe they wouldn't need any leading ladies.
Because they are the leading ladies??
-
Hey everyone - Merry Christmas Eve - I'm off to church for what will seem like 24 hours... I'll try and check in, but I'm already behind!
-
I know we have been requesting a lot of HHW vibes these day, but if you find a few spare ones rattling around in your pocket, could you send them towards my supervisor, Julia? She is on a three week trip to Guinea with a group from the states, and if you've seen world news today you know that their long time dictator/president died yesterday and now the military is claiming that they are taking over the country. I'm sure she's safe, but it might be awhile before she can come home.
Vibes for Julia-it sounds a bit scary.
I've been watching & was pleased to know you made it safely over the mountains. It sounds like you are already enjoying your holiday. I'm expecting photos of DS Toby's first Christmas.
-
I really do not like fruitcake at all. Never did as a kid, and it's one thing I never developed a taste for as an adult either.
-
It certainly would be fun to have a whole slew of Hainsie-Kimlets attend the
Tale festive Do.
Have fun, bk!!!!! :)
-
Hey everyone - Merry Christmas Eve - I'm off to church for what will seem like 24 hours... I'll try and check in, but I'm already behind!
Well, I don't think your behind is any of our business.
MARY CHRISTMAS!
-
The rain has not arrived as yet, but I fear it will be here at some point this evening. It's very gray outside at the moment.
-
I watched LEVERAGE while I ate lunch. The story wrapped up way too abruptly, not the best writing, I don't think, for this episode. Interesting casting of D.B. Sweeney as the priest and Scott Lowell as the entrepreneur. More traditional casting would have reversed those roles.
-
I then watched CARTESIUS. Being made for TV, it was split into two parts about 90 minutes each. At first, I was only going to watch the first part this afternoon and then recuperate a bit and watch the second part tonight, but then I changed my mind and just watched them both this afternoon to be done with it.
These biographical studies by Rossellini are very subdued; they're almost like Renaissance paintings with people talking to the backs of people's heads and very studied, stylized movement of actors and camera.
Decartes' theories were so fascinating and revolutionary that the film gains interest just from their being discussed, but it's still a slow slog through molasses to get to the end.
-
Not only did the UPS man not leave me anything, I didn't get anything from the regular mailman either. SO, what a bummer the day before a mail holiday. No chance of any packages until Friday. Boo!
-
Well, my afternoon surf is completed, so I'm going to hop off-line now and do some writing before heading downstairs for a full evening of fun viewing.
WBBL.
-
Gigi Perreau......that would work.
-
Spaghetti sauce is simmering on a very low heat. I, too, am simmering on a very low heat. Listening to CDs whilst I work away.
-
Keep the heat low.
-
Where did everybody go?

You would think it was Christmas Eve!
Been there done that!
-
Where did everybody go?
I was here! Where were you?? ;)
-
I wish everyone here at haineshisway.com could be here this festive evening.
I asked Santa to take me to your house but he was too busy. Sorry! But have fun...and take pictures!!
-
Been there done that!
Down there on the bottom of the world, you're on New Year's Eve already!?!?!?!?!
-
Nice and quiet here. The stockings are hung by the chimney with care. Will watch some DVD's and then sleep sleep sleep.
Or I might stay up and wait for pictures from the Kimmel Kristmas Eve Karnival.

Sweetbread is baked. Dinner has been served. Naps have been taken (Dixie Bell now has decided to join me on my twin bed whenever I nap). Dishwasher is running. Kitchen counters are clean. Bread pans have been washed and are currently drying. Christmas music is playing through ITunes - a lot produced by BK. It's raining and miserable outside. Christmas has almost arrived.

DR George can you catch the parts of LETTERMAN that you missed either on cbs.com or youtube?
I'm sure that it'll be available on-line, but I wanted to watch Darlene sing the song on my hi-def plasma TV. :)

We have been on Page 11 for three hours.
That's what I'm TALKIN' about.

A very Merry Christmas Eve to all!
I'm sorry I haven't posted the past couple of days. After I made my last post, I got the overwhelming urge to go lay down. But that wasn't for long--I have to get up and lose my dinner. After about another hour, I got back up and lost my lunch. The same with breakfast and then yet again for anything else that was left.
I had to go to work on Monday even though I felt pretty sick because we had to set our desks back up after the new carpet was put down. By the time I got home, I just wanted to go right to bed. I haven't been as sick as I was Sunday night but I've been eating very light, mostly soup and crackers. And I'm still very tired by the time I get home.
My stomach still doesn't feel right.
I wanted to go see Thelma's husband but I didn't want to risk making him sick with whatever I've got.
Ugh.

~~~Feel Better Very Soon Vibes for DR Danise!!~~~
I should do the long jog but it looks so CHILLY out. And it looks like it might rain. What to do? If I do the long jog I can EAT MORE tonight. I must do it.
BK, have you thought about getting your very own treadmill? That way, you could jog anytime that you want...even at 2:00 in the morning...and during any weather conditions! :D
-
Right now, I'm at my sister's house after an afternoon of shopping and parent-visiting. :) And now, I'm ketchuping on all the posts.
-
I think I got what ever this is from the folks at the dog park. Several of them mentioned they were sick. I tried to stay away from them but I guess not far enough.
Awww. Feel better soon, DR Danise!
-
Thank you, George. I'm glad you all can't catch what this is from me over the net.
-
DR George - I don't think "Letterman" ran over last night. Does your DVR/Tivo have the time slot set from 11:38-12:38?
I don't remember what specific time it was set for, but my DVR stopped recording (without any indication of any kind of problem) about a minute into Darlene Love's song, so something was not right, last night. :-\
-
Thank you also DR Laura.
I'm glad that the little orange kitten got adopted. I hope the new family with love him and take good care of him forever!
It is nearly 40 degrees today with a lot of rain. So no chance of being like DR GEORGE and getting stuck at the DQ!
DR DtM - I enjoyed the pictures of Christmasvillage Town....but I really liked the train ride! What fun. Thanks so much! I almost needed my Dramamine!
Well, then it's a good thing that the battery on my camera ran out of power because I had planned on finishing the trip by running the train in reverse!
I also loved the trip through Christmasvillage Town.
Not to worry Danise, Freddy has come home, but I will send out get well vibes to you and vibes to George's cat!
Thank you, MBarnum! I gave Ebonie her first antibiotic this morning and had to leave. The instructions say that it could cause vomiting, diarrhea AND loss of appetite! :o What's that all about?? What am I going to come home to?? :P
Now I'm off to pick up my former mother-in-law for dinner.
DR TCB - I have been a very good boy this year. ;)
I just got home from the mountains, visiting my father. We had a BIG present for him! He has been dictating his memoirs (while he still has his memory!) to his wife. I scanned about a hundred pictures, and my brother-in-law did a wonderful layout and through an internet service, we were able to "publish" his memoirs, and it turned out beautifully. Best of all, my brother, who has been alienated from the family for many years (not his fault!) went to the mountains with us, and had a little bonding time with my dad. It was a great experience, and I was completely amazed by how beautiful this turned out.
Lee enjoyed making the book so much that he is thinking about starting a business doing this. Kind of like a personal documentary in book form. I think everyone should have a book like this, and it would be a great present for anyone hitting a millstone birthday or anniversary. My brother is ensconced on the sofa right now reading it!
-
I'm cooking a Christmas brunch here tomorrow morning and then going to Greg's family's house in the afternoon, so I won't be able to catch up until tomorrow night, but just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. (I sure could use some bk spaghetti right now!)
Sounds like everyone else here at HHW is settling in wearing kerchief and cap.
DR EDISAURUS that is a lovely story.....
-
I know it is well regarded in these parts by most, but after seeing a few of the television promos for FROST/NIXON, I can only say that the non-interview portions look interesting, but Mr Frank Langella as Richard Nixon looks too much like a SNL parody to me.....
I think this will be a none watch for me - now or on down the line....we shall see.
Laid back as usual. He is also enjoying Craig & Ioana who give him lots of attention.
I'm still at my sister's. For dinner, we had vegetarian chili (my sister is a vegetarian and my niece is vegan) with cornbread muffins. Very good. We're watching "A Christmas Story," but took a break so that I could make frosting for cupcakes that my sister made for dessert.
Back to the movie and the cupcakes! :)
I had a marvelous evening with two wonderful films.
I began with BONNIE AND CLYDE on Blu-ray. I hadn't seen the whole movie in many years, so it was a treat to see it from the beginning to the end and in such a high quality transfer. There's one sequence that was very soft and grainy (the picnic with family), such a contrast to the rest of the movie which is sharp with superb color. I'll have to read some reviews to see what others had to say about that.
-
Leaving to sing at Midnight Mass in a bit.
-
Next, I took a classic off the shelf I hadn't watched all the way through in a long time - INHERIT THE WIND. Such a marvelous movie with a handful of really excellent performances.
Sadly, it was one of those annoying MGM nonanamorphic letterbox transfers. Upconverted it looked just fine, but how much better it would have looked if MGM had done the right thing and given it anamorphic enhancement.
I reached 800! Ok, off to get dressed.
Vibes for Julia!~~~~
Weather is very weird here tonight. It has been raining and raining hard (weird because there is a ton of snow on the ground). But it is causing roads to be like rivers. And of course all cars are driving very fast.
My street is like a skating rink. Although most other roads are just river-like and not ice. But the side streets are ice. Not fun. Hoping it doesn't all freeze and that the drains start working.
-
There was so much food!
I don't even know why i made mine. My favorite was these coconut crusted shrimps with homemade sauce. Chicken salad party sandwiches. Potato latkes. I didn't even eat dessert but took some home.
-
My niece was pretty happy with her presents. Especially her beloved cupcake maker. She hugged me and dragged me around in a circle chanting, "cupcake maker, cupcake maker.". She was also pretty pleased to finally get her 2 favorite Curious George stories that she's taken out from the library many times (Curious George and the Chocolate Factory & Curious George Makes Pancakes).
-
Vibes for DR Danise. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, I think I'll head down to bed and get a head start on sleep so Santa will be good.
Good night!
-
Beautiful tree, Jane. Ours is little with a hole, and the garland is hanging funny.
-
DR George i'm just catching up on last night's late posts. And your suggestion of ice cream topping (for the soft fudge) was my mom's suggestion too.
Jennifer, what about using it as a fondue? That could be very good! :D
What exactly is fondue?
I put in the freezer because it set similarly the second time. But i want to use it. Because it did taste amazing.
-
I don't think i'll be doing anything at all tomorrow (nothing open).
But i am anxious for Boxing Day, which is the biggest shopping day of the year here.
The bad part is the stores only open at 1pm. But it's not so bad because everyone goes before noon to get good parking spots. and some stores open early and so it's fun walking around the mall finding stores that open early! :)
-
Thank you DR Laura. We went all out this year with the all the activities. This is the first time in 2 or 3 years we have had a tree.
DR Jennifer, we also had latkes tonight. They were a real treat.
-
Sorry about rusty. :(
With the roads so icy staying home sounds like a good plan.
-
My mom made the potato latkes. They were good. We brought them to christmas dinner because we hadn't had any other time to make/eat them.
It's sort of weird going to Christmas Eve dinner and putting our gifts under the tree. But my aunt and uncle are not Jewish. And neither is my brother-in-law. So we've sort of gotten used to it.
I've never had a tree. But i end up spending lots of time decorating other people's trees. For some reason they don't like doing it. So i did my sister's tree. ANd my aunt's tree.
-
The side streets are icy. But the driving did not seem icy at all. But like i said there was a lot of water. i mean it was ridiculous in a few places. you could see small rivers. I could not believe how fast people were driving. I guess because it looked safe being only rain.
My brother-in-law will be driving my sister and niece tomorrow morning (2 hours to visit family). So i hope the conditions improve. Or at least that it stops raining.
-
And even if the roads aren't the greatest on friday. The mall for boxing day is only a 5 minute drive. Not much weather could keep me away from that. :)
I know some people either love or hate Boxing Day shopping. Now i wouldn't do what many do and line up for hours to fight people for products. But i love walking through the mall and getting there really early.
-
I got a very nice silver winter jacket from my aunt from costco. It will go great with this silver Guess purse that i have.
They have some really nice jackets at Costco.
-
DR Jennifer-vibes the roads are better tomorrow & your family is safe.
-
Partay is winding down, but was a whole mess o' fun. There will be photographs.
-
TCB - I would respond to your message, but in the spirit of the holiday season... :) :)
-
Great party, BK. Sandy and I had a fine time with some interesting, nice people.
-
Another Christmas Eve Do is Done and it was really quite fun. Druxy and Sandy, Miss Patti (and, briefly, her mum), former dear reader Panni, Noel from NY, a new friend from the Film Score Monthly message board and his partner, my friend John Holly and his friend, Adryan Russ, Doug Haverty and his ever-lovin', our very own PennyO, neighbor Ellen Butterfield, and singer Jan Abrams and her ever-lovin' Lou. I think that was everyone.
-
There is simply no way to not overeat at my Do and I Did. But, NO dessert, only a half-a-roll, but a lot of spaghetti and tuna pasta salad. I feel way too full, but I'm hoping that the four-mile jog and that this will be my splurge meal o' the week, will mean I didn't do too much damage, if any. Even though I'll be attending a big Do tomorrow, I shall be a VERY good boy - I'll do the long jog, not load up on potatoes (there are always several kinds of potatoes at Cissy's partays) - just a little turkey and/or ham, and maybe a little dessert. Then come Friday and the weekend I have no plans at all so I can be very good.
The drive home from my sister's was very bumpy, but otherwise, no problems. It snowed a little bit while I was there, but it wasn't freezing cold, so what little snow that was on my was very easy to remove. It's supposed to be warming up as the week goes on. Finally!
I almost forgot! I actually forgot to check my mail yesterday, so I checked it when I came home from my sister's tonight. I received a couple of cards from HHW DRs and a lovely package from DR Elmore! Thank you very much! :-*
-
You may have this dance, DR George.
Why, thanks, Jose. :)
-
In other news...
I went to see "The Class" ("Entre les murs") earlier tonight. Comme çi, comme ça. Pas mal, pas bien. It was a lot more "talky" than I expected - and since it was in French, that meant a lot of subtitles to read, and the pacing of the film was a bit slow for my taste - everything sort of unfolded in real time. However, the acting was very good, although, I need to do some research on the film just to see how much of it was scripted. The movie centers around a teacher and his class, and the kids, well teenagers, were great. -But then when the credits started to roll, each character's name matched the real actor's name, so... ???
-
Coming up next on TCM is "The Shop Around the Corner" with Margaret Sullavan and Jimmy Stewart. I've never seen it and I set my DVR to record it. A couple of nights ago, I was able to record "In the Good Old Summertime," the musical remake with Judy Garland and the recently late Van Johnson. Now, I just need to get "You've Got Mail" and I'll have the trilogy. ;)
-
After the movie, I met up with a friend, and we hung out for a while, and eventually rang in Christmas with a toast of Pineapple Fanta. :)
