Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a very 2009 vibe, and now it is time for you to post until the 2009 cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  I've never made any New Year's Resolutions (at least, none that I can remember).  If I were to make one this year, it would be to get more sleep. ::) I stay up too late and get up too early.  Consequently, I never feel rested during the day.

That's what it'll be...to get more sleep on a regular basis.

So, Happy New Year, Everyone!!  I'm going to bed.

Good night, BK...and guests. ;D

I should probably get to bed, too.  And I really do NOT want to get out of bed until I wake up in the morning.  And even then, I will get out of bed VERY slowly.

Good morning and welcome to 2009!

I was in bed by 8:30 pm last night, but awoke to the fireworks at midnight. Then back to sleep and woke up to a huge windstorm at 4:30 am. And here I sit at the computer drinking coffee (decaf).

Soon I may crawl back into bed for some cuddle time with Bosco and Freddy.

For my resolution, many of my clothes that weren't fitting before are fitting. But i have not really been watching too much lately what i eat. So i will start to watch what i eat. So that every single piece of clothing i have will fit. It's under 10 lbs so it won't be too bad.

But i'd also like to start exercising again. I have a rebounder (mini-tramp). And a stepper (not crazy about it). But i also have other piece of equipment (that my clothes sit on now). I'm not even sure what it's called. But you lie down and it has a bar that you can work out either your arms or legs by pushing on it. The only thing is i have to be careful of my lower back!

New Year's morning greetings!  After our movie double date last night, we came home rang in 2009 in the comfort and safety of our family room.

While waiting to tune into CNN to celebrate midnight in Times Square (I did see our corner, DR Danise!), we watched That's Entertainment, II.  I love to watch ML, the dancer, watching the dancing.

TOD:

Like DR George, to get more sleep.  Also, to breath more deeply and remember to stay in the moment more often.

To get a pair of comfortable walking shoes and to take some long walks.

To get a better pair of bifolcals and return to reading more.

To get out of my TCM routine.

To get to work on archiving my VHS tapes to DVD.

To get to NYC more often and finally meet up with some of you peeps.

My niece came over yesterday because she decided she did not want to go shopping with her parents. Only just before she arrived she decided she in fact did want to go with them. only they didn't want her to go (they had a lot of stuff to do).

For the first time ever with me she wouldn't let her mom leave. And screamed that she did not want her to go. But luckily she calmed down pretty quickly (with a candy cane and her favorite HI-5).

When it was time to leave (and this is usual) she didn't want to go and begged to be allowed to sleep over. This happens a lot when she is over around dinner time. She thinks she should be allowed to decide where she sleeps!  Luckily my sister had said she could sleep over during the weekend. So i told her we could work on our list (she likes to make lists of what we will do). And
this was good enough for her!

Crazy kids. She did not want to come in. And she did not want to leave!

I wish fireworks on New Year's eve were a tradition here. I guess it's just too cold for anyone to want to watch them outside. I don't even know if they have fireworks here in the winter.

Regardless it was so unbelievable cold out last night. I didn't even look at the temp. But it had to be over -20C.

The library called on tuesday at 7:15pm (they close at 9pm) saying that the 4th book in a series i've been reading was in. Since they were closed wed/thurs/fri i decided to go pick it up (only 5 minutes away but it was cold that night too).

It's a very interesting series. It's by PC Cast and her daughter. It's called House Of Night (the books are marked, betrayed, chosen, untamed). I am ready to start the last one.  I think they are in the young adult section. But they are sort of like the much older young adult section. There's sex in it so i can't even recommend it to my 13 year old niece.

I guess after reading the TWILIGHT series and watching TRUE BLOOD, i'm sort of in the vampire mood these days! It's quite interesting. My favorite part is that the story is quite unpredictable. A lot of the romance/women's type books i read are quite predictable.

I guess if i would stop commenting on every post i read that i could get through last night's posts much faster!

Last night i had a pina colada. Well  maybe 1/2 glass of one. Nobody offered me one. So i just drank what was left in the blender. It was very good. I couldn't really tell if there was too much alcohol in it or not. I'm not used to drinking much (i rarely do). But it was good!

TOD - This New Year's Day has a real "first day of the rest of my life" feeling to it, because it's my first official day of retirement.  In the short term, I want to organize and rebond with my home environment, spend more time with DH Richard, my mom, my aunt, and many, many friends, and learn to sleep past 7am.

Btw, that strawberry margarita looks good. We used to have this restaurant here that i adored (it's closed now) called Chi Chis. They had amazing fried ice cream. And they used to have 1/2 priced margaritas a few days a week.

I also loved the monkey pictures.  I wish I had half the life that our DR Jose has.  He really is a man about town.

Poor Sheena was a shaking mass after all of the noise last night.  She jumped into bed with me and trembled for about an hour afterwards even though there wasn't as many (and none as loud as the first) fireworks.

Needless to say, yesterday was one of the longest of my life and I think I shall have to lay down sometime this afternoon.

Good morning, all! And a Very Happy New Year to everyone from West 82nd Street.

I have a bit more gift wrapping to attend to and then dinner with my friend Bruce Pomahac. At some point today I need to unpack the BABES IN TOYLAND cartons I shipped from Ohio and get back to work on Act One notes. Bruce is stopping by here before dinner to see the "new look" of the apartment, so there's some tidyng to do as well. First thing, empty my 2007 receipts into a shopping bag so I can begin this year's IRS prep.

I spoke to Charlotte last night and Sunday is our gift exchange day and a movie, most likely Benjamin Button's Curious Tale.

DR singdaw, in answer to your question about dropping balls: I think it may be only once; you should have been around 12. If not, see your doctor.

DR Ginny, kudos on your retirement! How did you and Richard like CRANFORD?

Happy Birthday to Mrs Druxy!

I'm off to work! Heigh-ho. Wish I had a diamond mine.

Well, at the least the Hollywood Foreign Press saw some merit in SCROOGE. Albert Finney won the Best Actor Golden Globe for his performance, and it was nominated for Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Song, and Best Score.

I have raved here many times about the film. I, too, think it's Bricusse's best work, and "Happiness" is one of the most haunting songs to come from a movie ever. It is the one Christmas themed movie I return to each year. I don't get around to IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE or other versions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL every year, but I NEVER fail to watch SCROOGE, and I'll likely watch it again within a few months just because I love it so much.

I was one of those crowds of people who saw it at Radio City Music Hall, and on the big screen with the stereophonic sound, it was quite an experience. The moment in "See the Phantoms" when that hideous ghost comes right at the camera had me flinching in my seat. I literally ducked!

Since I'm taking the day off today, I'll be watching nothing with a note pad in my lap. Instead, I know I'll watch one of my CHristmas presents - the Blu-ray of BODY HEAT, but I'll likely save that for this evening. This afternoon I may have a THIN MAN marathon or a Miss Marple marathon.

I know I'll watch another Season 3 NCIS episode while I eat lunch.

I also loved "Scrooge." My much older sister took me to see it in the theater. She mentioned she would like to see it again, and I couldn't find it in a store, so I bought it for her on Amazon and had it sent to her. It didn't get there before I left, so I didn't get to see it.

Well, I my morning internet surfing is completed, so I guess I'll head on downstairs now to start the rest of my day off. I'm mad there is no mail delivery today (or UPS), but I have plenty to keep me busy.

Oh, I started reading Farley Granger's autobiography the other night. He has a very simple writing style which makes reading it a breeze.

I finished watching SERENADE....with Mr Mario Lanza and Ms Joan Fontaine and Mr Vincent Price.

The gay subtext of the James Cain novel is not apparent in the screenplay by Goff & Roberts and John Twist.

This resolution is one I make most days: to be Present. I sometimes find myself missing so much of my life, through thinking back or thinking forward... so the gift I most want to give myself is This Moment.

Being truly Present is pretty easy up at the cabin - feeding the birds, gardening, hanging with the raccoons, alla that. Trick is to bring all that down the mountain with me. Not the critters and the trees, but the sense of Being Here.

DR JRand - The apartment is owned by another keyboard player and his husband.  -There were at least six Broadway pit pianists at the party last night, more than I've ever seen gathered in one place at one time, in fact.  -And I think we've all subbed in for each other at one point or another.  In any case...

Let's just say that Greg - the keyboard player - married well.  ;)  -Although, Greg has been doing pretty well for himself too the past couple years with back-to-back stints as the Assistant Musical Director/Conductor for two very popular musicals.

My Mac is having a hard time with pdf files. When I try to download one to my desktop  from an email I get this message: pdf could not be saved because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to a different location.

This has just started occurring and I wonder if it's due to one of my software updates? Things seemed to be fine before I went away.

DR elmore - There does seem to be some sort of glitch with incoming PDF files lately.  After the last Adobe Reader update, I started to get the "Can't find program to open file".  So, I have to manually select Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the file.

Have you tried selecting a PDF file in a Finder window, then...

File -> Open With ->

Adobe Reader and/or Acrobat should be the default Application.  If it's not, just Enable it via the drop down menus.  That may fix things.

Hello, everyone.
My news: I am now the proud owner--oops, I mean--I am NO LONGER the proud owner of a 1820 townhouse. Yes, we reached the settlement table, but only after a last-minute hiccup, which sent one of my buyers into a tailspin. But all got put right and we signed and settled. I will now rent back for a few weeks, then move.

SPOOO!!!!

From Gothamist (http://)

Quote
Worst Commute of 2009 (So Far)

The NYPD recommended that people visiting NYC for New Year's take public transportation, but early this morning, about some passengers on Metro-North got to welcome a little 2009 commuter frustration. The AP reports, "About 150 passengers have been rescued from two disabled commuter trains coming from New York that lost heat and electricity in a nearly three-hour ordeal" that started at 3:40 a.m. It's believed "several thousand feet of overhead wires that send power to the trains became entangled and torn, cutting off power" to the trains between Bridgeport and Stratford. And because of it took some time to lift and secure the wires, the rescue didn't start until 6:25 a.m.

Well, at least it was memorable.  ;)

I'm trying to remember if my monkey does have a name. I think it's just "Cheeky Monkey".  He also used to have a "blue" sibling - a Blue Monkey.  Although, the Blue Monkey is still hiding somewhere, I think, I hope.  In any case...

When I first started going "on the road", Steve gave me a monkey to take with me as a sort of talisman and reminder of home.  While I was cleaning out some boxes earlier this week, I happened to come across Cheeky Monkey, and since last night was my first New Year's Eve in New York City since 1991, I decided that that was a special occasion that just had to be shared with my monkey too.

*Needless to say, I did get a few strange looks on the subway when I was taking pictures of my monkey.  Although, now that I think of it, there weren't too many people who thought that that was a strange thing to be doing on New Year's Eve in New York City.  ;)

Yes, Bruce, the hiccup was indeed inane. The buyer (one of the buyers qualified on her own and had better credit, so was going to be THE buyer, but they've since married so they are now the buyerS--got that?) was prequalified when they first saw the house and we thought that all the paperwork required by the lender, BofA, was in place. But at the last minute one of the BofA people returned from the holidays with a new requirement: the buyer's landlady had to sign some document. WHY??? Said landlady was miffed because she wanted the buyers to buy her apartment, which they were living in, and made a stink. Oy! Then Mr Buyer was upset because he thought I might sue him for not being able to settle on the agreed date, so we had to do a one-day extension. I certainly would not have sued him, but all got taken care of and we settled.

I have seen lenders do this before. You fill out beaucoup documents, everything is signed and ready, then the lender suddenly comes up with a new requirement at the eleventh hour.  It happened to me once during a refi. It makes no sense to me at all.

Well, glad it all worked out.  My knee is still sore, but feels better than yesterday.  And the horrid redness around where I smashed my chin is all gone and in its place there is indeed a small cut.  I can live with that and now I shan't look like I have an unseemly rash at today's party.

Regarding PDFs, even though I told Larry I don't know Macs so I can't help him I have noticed that since I have not upgraded my Adobe (I still use Version 7) because it wreaks havoc with my system (I tried 8 but quickly uninstalled it and went back to 7 and I refuse to use 9) I don't have problems. Perhaps if you went back to an earlier version or you might want to try

Good night, BK...and guests. ;D

Staying up too late I understand, George, but getting up too early?  Don't you go to work about the same time I am getting off work?

Good Morning.  To quote the great Jonathan Larson "It's gonna be a Happy New Year".  The DP and I hung out with some friends last night and neither of us thought to bring our laptops, so we missed the festivities here at HHW.  But I'm all caught up.  Glad everyone had a good party.

DR Elmore, Tell Mr Pomahac I'm a big fan of all he does.  He latest interview with Robert Viagas on the Playbill Radio podcast was fun and informative.

Today, going to visit Mom, which sounds like a big deal, but really it isn't!  The DP is going to make Chicken and waffles for dinner, a first for me.

File -> Open With ->

Adobe Reader and/or Acrobat should be the default Application.  If it's not, just Enable it via the drop down menus.  That may fix things.

Easy for you!

Let's just say that Greg - the keyboard player - married well.  ;)  -Although, Greg has been doing pretty well for himself too the past couple years with back-to-back stints as the Assistant Musical Director/Conductor for two very popular musicals.

I do love Jose's monkey. He's quite adorable. Does he have a name, Jose? I have a monkey about the same size, whose name is Sam. I never thought about having him join me on my adventures, though. Truth be told, Sam is a bit of a layabout. He spends his time among my books and seems happy enough with that life.

Although, now that I think of it, there weren't too many people who thought that that was a strange thing to be doing on New Year's Eve in New York City.  ;)

The Blue Monkey probaby has your keys.

Did anybody watching the Rose Parade on NBC notice how many promos they had for shows starting this week.

It wasn't weird to see the promos. But it was weird to me to hear Nancy O'Dell (co-host for the parade on NBC) saying the promos. It was a good tactic. Because i kept thinking she was talking about a float so i was listening.

That SuperStar of Dance on sunday (where different countries do different styles) sounds interesting.

I didn't find the monkey strange at all.

Seriously I sleep with (well they are on my bed) 2 of my niece's stuffed animals that she sleeps with when she is here.

One is her poochela. My mom bought her 2 identical dogs in case one got lost. So at home she has poochie. And with me she has his twin brother poochela. :)

The other is a TY stuffed panda that reminds her of marzapanda from strawberry shortcake. So she sleeps with those two (or i do when she's not sleeping in my bed)!

Well, the oil company still hasn't arrived, so...

I had planned to do some cleaning today, but since it's currently in the low 50s in the apartment, well... And since we're on the ground floor with a concrete slab under the tile flooring, well... And since I just checked the three insta-read thermometers in the kitchen and they're "saying" it's 52 degrees - which means it's probably feels a bit colder than that... So...

I'm heading down to MoMA for some Art, some heat, some food (probably), and I shall be bringing my monkey with me too.  :)

Laters...

Good morning/afternoon all.  We spent a quiet New Years with friends, eating Chinese and watching Eddie Izzard movies.  It was enjoyable.  Toby stayed up way past his bedtime, and as a result we all got to sleep in until 9 am this morning.  It was nice, but tomorrow I need to start getting up earlier.  Monday morning at 5 am is going to be painful unless I start getting back in the habit of early rising.

Today we are watching a marathon of Kevin Smith movies and being lazy slugs for the day.

Congrats on the sale!

This is one of my two all-time favorite Christmas movies..."A Christmas Story" is the other.  We (my sister, niece, rest of the family) have to watch this ever year. :D

Good night, BK...and guests. ;D

Staying up too late I understand, George, but getting up too early?  Don't you go to work about the same time I am getting off work?

It takes me that long to actually wake up and get ready to go to work.

;)

I don't often make resolutions for the New Year, but I do like the idea of having a clean slate in front of me, with chances to improve things from the way they were the year before.

2008 was a weird combination of ups and downs for me.  The personal side of my life was filled with wonderful things: the pregnancy, our trip to New York and New England, the birth of a healthy baby, wonderful times spent with our family and friends.  All of this contrasted with the underlying downturn in the state of our world that stops me from calling 2008 a truly positive year.  There was so much that went wrong, so much that seemed to test how low we could sink as a people.  But unless we change our collective mindset, we will have no chance of improvement.
So I resolve to keep an open mind, to believe that things can get better.

My mother gently reminded me, after seeing me over the holidays, that I tend to forget to care of myself in my desire to care for Toby and Jed.  So I also resolve to take time for myself, taking care of me so I don't get totally run down.

I suppose I could add the usual "I resolve to eat better and exercise more."  But I'll be a bit more specific about it and say "I resolve to get the rest of this baby weight off!"

And lastly, I resolve not to slip away from HHW again.  I forget sometimes what a truly special and wonderful group of people you are.  TCB said it best, I can't improve on that, but I wanted to add that I agree with him wholeheartedly.

And now that I'm all caught up with today's New Year's Day posts, I must leave.  I have to shower and get dressed, then go to the store for my sister, then go to my sister's for our family's New Year's Day together.  Our parents are coming over!  It's my mom's first day out of the house (not including Tuesday's physical therapy session) since her knee replacement surgery, a couple of weeks ago.

Have a great day, all! ;D

I guess I'm in the minority: I always hated the film SCROOGE. I've been playing a lot, though, the CD of the cast recording of THE STINGIEST MAN IN TOWN, which was a tv special with Basil Rathbone,Vic Damone, Patrice Munsel, Robert Weede, Martyn Green, and Johnny Desmond around 1956. I don't like all of the score but some of it's very good. I wonder if a complete kinescope exists? It never turns up on eBay as a bootleg DVD.

I began my afternoon watching an NCIS episode from Season 3. Zac Efron had an important part in the story, and it was funny seeing him in the show. The story concerned an abducted female Navy officer, and though the ending seemed a bit botched, it was an OK episode.

And I concluded my afternoon viewing with a movie mystery, one of my all-time favorites: EVIL UNDER THE SUN. That superb use of Cole Porter music and the cast to die for all playing the hell out of their roles. As many times as I've watched it, I never fail to be completely delighted by everything about this film. And the mystery is one of Christie's finest puzzles.

I agree with you.  It fails to keep the Agatha Christie flavor of other movies, (like "Orient Expresss") but it is still a classic and a true favorite.

Since each succeeding film after ORIENT EXPRESS had done lesser box-office than the previous one, I think there was a concerted effort to veer away a bit from the original tone particularly of ORIENT EXPRESS and NILE. This one is much more playful and overtly campy (which we saw a bit of in MIRROR).

I also stopped at Home Depot after the movie and picked up a couple of their heavy duty plastic shelving units for my store room. I have too much on the floor in there and I'm concerned that if the plumbing fix goes bad it could all get wet. SO, one more thing to do over the weekend.

I didn't take the cabinet down, it's too solid. I did take off the hardware and a little shelf rail that was on it.  I also took down the towel bars and won't be putting two of them up again.  How many towel bars to you need in a tiny bathroom?  So, I hope to get the paint going this weekend

Oh-My-Gosh  my first Rose parade with HD!  It's soooo beautiful!   It's like I'm there!

I vow that someday, I will see the Rose parade in person.

Plan carefully, if you do go.

The parade route along Colorado Blvd. is a zoo, starting at least 24 hours before the actual parade, with revelers blocking the sidewalk as the camp out for their viewing places.  I mean, it is literally mobbed.  If you want to do the parade this way, make sure you're with a good band of co-revelers, and plan on a long, chilly and noisy night.

The other option is to book ahead, paying for seats in the grandstands (set up weeks in advance), and also for a hotel room nearby.  Pricey.

You might be better off staying right where you are, watching the event via your HD television.

If it was Chi-Chi's, it was part of the chain.  Which went belly up.  Terminal illness.

The name Chi-Chi's continues, however, on supermarket shelves.  Hormel uses the name, which it bought the rights to from the original company, for it's salsas and chiles.

Bruce Pomahac is one of my favorite people and we dished and laughed through a wonderful meal begnning with cocktails: he had a mojito and I had a concoction of apple cider and several other choice ingredients called on the menu "La Vie en Rosemary." For starters Brice had a lettuce/tomator salad and I had Manhattan clam chowder. He had steak and I had smoked salmon with asparagus and potatoes dauphinoise. For dessert we had bananas foster. Yum

I'm up and happy to say I did not get out of bed from the time I went to sleep till a few minutes ago.  It looks like a gorgeous day outside.  I awoke to no wireless signal but instead of getting upset to the point of wanting to hurl the modem and Airport Extreme out the window, instead of doing The BK Panic, I simply unplugged the modem and the Airport Extreme, went about my business, plugged them both back in and was on the Internet instantly.  And that's the way I'm going to handle problems this year, baby.

Good for you, Bruce! Save all that stress for something else!

The Hoppin' John is cooking.

Now, all I need is to get der B off the couch so he can make his mashed potatoes.

The store totally sold out of real potatoes, or I'd make them for him.

Instead, he's going to have mashed potatoes from potato buds.

I think I'll go see what the Mummers are up to.

I wonder if Craig & Ioana went.  They figured they could walk over & watch the parade.  When we lived in Ivyland, PA we never went to the parades in the city.

DR JRand, TWO FOR THE ROAD is one of our favorite movies.
Bruce, Keith & I were working at the Bruin Theater when it showed.  As far as we knew it was very well received.  I loved being able to watch it over & over.

DR Druxy, Albert Finny’s version is my favorite SCROOGE.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Now what?

Thanks, Jane.  It's always a lovely party, but (and maybe it's in my mind) when you're sniffling and coughing at a big party, I sometimes feel like people are thinking "Oh no, I'm going to catch that cold if I shake his hand or hug him hello."

I mentioned your consideration to a friend today after she complained about the person sneezing & coughing throughout her New Years Eve movie experience.

Very interesting.  I will have to read more about the two books.  I never read Fitzgerald's short story.  We went with friends to see the movie today.  The thought of a 2hr 45 min, 3 hrs if you include the previews, Brad Pitt film wasn't all that appealing to Keith & me.  We all liked the movie very much & were impressed with the make-up & special effects.  Cate Blanchard was wonderful as we usually find her.  The big surprise was the superb acting by Brad Pitt.

Back from a wonderful party at Mr. Barry Pearl's home environment.  I knew quite a few people, met some nice people I didn't know, and had some excellent foodstuffs.  I actually was a very GOOD boy in terms of the main food - I had one little piece of brisket, which couldn't have been more than two ounces, some homemade cole slaw (really good), one fried chicken wing (small), and that was it.  I did that because I'd already had a gander at the desserts, and I knew that I was going to make my main meal the desserts rather than the food.  So, I had a tiny piece of chocolate bundt cake (may have been flourless - it was very light), with whipped cream, some sort of small bar of something good (chocolate and maybe some sort of fruit), and, best of all, a sliver of a chocolate peanut butter cheese cake, with whipped cream.  I stayed longer than I normally do, about three hours, and then I came home.  I was then feeling very guilty about not jogging on the first day of the New Year, and since my knee was feeling much better, I decided to do the long jog.  It's the first time I've done the long jog after dark - I don't like it as much, although I must say it was fairly easy, I did it more briskly, and my knee didn't really give me any problems at all.  But some of my route is not well-lit at night, and I don't love running under a dark freeway underpass.  But I'm really glad I did it.

While I was jogging, I came up with four really good things to add to the pages I did this morning.  I'll probably save that for the morning's writing, since I know exactly what it is and where it goes and it's always good to start a day's writing knowing what you're doing.  I wrote it all out in longhand, so all I'll have to do is insert it where it belongs, then carry on from where I left off.  The best thing is I came up with the last line for the chapter, whenever I get to it.  It's just what I was looking for.

I had a warm, wonderful evening of viewing treats. I began with one of the great modern noirs: BODY HEAT. A great tale acted to perfection by a sterling cast with some really neat twists. No matter how many times I see it, I enjoy the construction of the caper.

The Blu-ray looked very nice and it had a great Dolby TrueHD track. I just love John Barry's music.

Next, I pulled our NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS. I hadn't watched it since reviewing it early in 2008, so it was interesting watching it again for fun. It's a structural mess, of course, but the cast is fun, and it has pretty good pace.

There is a very complete 58 1/2 minute documentary on the making of the film with the director, producer, set designer, and the two stars covering all the topics you mentioned and much more. It appears to have been recently made, however.

My friend Gregg is coming in from visiting his parents in St. Louis for the holidays, and we always go have Chinese on the day he gets back into town. His plane comes in at 3:30 tomorrow (someone else is picking him up at the airport), so we'll eat later in the afternoon.

Oh, PBS funded $400,000 of the $700,000 budget for the movie and it did play on AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE, but they let it have a theatrical release first since it was such a big hit on the art house circuit.

I went down the basement about 7:30 and decided to just sort of look at the bathroom to decide what I'm going to do next. So I put a little paint on the wall.  Cut a slice of the wall paper off and taped it up (still not sure about it) Then I looked at the monstrosity of a cupboard. Ok, it would be a fairly small cupboard in a bigger space, but this isn't a big space.

I decided the only reason I wasn't taking it down was a fear that it would hit me in the head and I would lay on the basement floor for a week before anyone found me...or something like that.  I decided that was silly, got out the screwdriver and took the thing down.  It was easy and really not very heavy.   Man does that open up the space.   I also discovered that plain water on the paper backing takes it off.  So, I am going to do things right and if I'm feeling up to it after work will finish stripping the wallpaper.  I hadn't planned to do this much right now, but I don't want to be carrying paint cans over the new carpet so I'm trying to get it all done before then.

I've loved SCROOGE ever since the eighth grade class trip I took to go see it at a movie theatre.  And I remember how angry I was with the yearly television showings (only on New York channel 9, I think) where a couple of segments were cut out.  I don't think I saw the film in its entirety until it was issued on VHS.

If I have one issue with the movie, it's the Scrooge in Hell segment.  It seems so out of step with the rest of the movie in look and tone that I often thought it was done with another director but I've never heard of any such story.

But other than that, I love the film.  I think all of the numbers are perfect (well, not too sure about what Alec Guinness is singing, but it fits the mood.)  And while Albert Finney only comes in as my third favorite Scrooge (Alastair Sim and Mr. Magoo are #1 and #2), there are no better Ghosts of Christmases Past and Present than Dame Edith Evans and Kenneth More.
