The whole gluten-free fad is just another example of people deciding to be afraid of food.  Food is bad for you, you can't eat this, you can't eat that.  It's all BS.

Yes, there are a few people who have serious health problems.  However, only two percent of the population have honest food allergies.  Everyone else who claims a food allergy is totally clueless about what an allergy actually is, and is using the claim of an allergy (or two or three) as a way of forcing the rest of the world to obey their wills.

Gluten is what makes good bread such a wonderful thing to eat.  Gluten free bread is nothing but a stale cracker.  Bleh.

(Bows politely to the audience and steps down from the soapbox.)

We will be on Long Island (I'll wave as we go through Deer Park Vixmom) for the long weekend. I don't know if we will be coming back to NYC on Sunday or Monday. It's probably Monday since Anthony has things to do to get ready for the trek out West.

It should be a relaxing weekend, at least for me. I'm not listening to anything right now and I don't know what my/our viewing plans are for the weekend.

Tis' cold in New York as well. It's 10 degrees, not below, just 10 degrees. We've survived worse.

It is still freezing here.

Reading about how cold DR Cillaliz was, i wasn't sure the comparison to here (not good at -30s conversions).

I just looked it up. Here it has been -36C with windchill. That is something like -32F!

It is unbearably freezing. I thought i would freeze to death last night. And i was sitting in the car!

I was watching CNN last night when i got home. Larry King!  I wish Anderson Cooper had been on his show.

That survivor guy is now a tv star!

Has any show managed to interview the pilot? I would like to see that.

I agree that what he did was extraordinary. Although I don't think he is feeling that good about it. CNN had a quote from his wife saying he was "reeling from the experience".  He did a great thing, but it still must be horrifying to have gone through it.

Good FREEZING morning, everyone.

I have a very busy day today, but I shall attempt a quick update before I must again turn to the packing. MAGNIFICENT Matt is at my storage locker this morning with the movers as they inventory, then load all the stuff I haven't had access to for the past year and could probably live without. They will pick up the rest of my stuff next week. It is, of course, bitterly cold and there is no heat at the storage locker. In fact, today is the coldest day in the last 15 years. What timing!

I had time this morning to watch two more episodes of MY THREE SONS. Amazing that this show did so well its first season, finishing as the 13th most popular show on television. THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, which debuted the same year as MY THREE SONS, was a thousand times funnier and also on occasion much more affecting. It was, of course, more popular than MY THREE SONS during its entire run, and finished its first year as the 4th most popular show and the most popular comedy on television. MY THREE SONS did have a longer run, however (though Andy Griffith chose to bow out after eight years with his show as #1 on TV).

Then tomorow is Take Out the Window Day. To explain, my house is typical of many of the smaller houses of its period and has a narrow staircase, which is also boxed in. There's a turn at the bottom which makes furniture-moving quite difficult. When I moved in the implications became quite apparent--my box spring couldn't make the turn. The next day someone came by and used a crowbar on one of the bedroom windows to remove the part of the window that holds the sashes (the part of the window that holds the glass) in place, removed the sashes, and then hauled my box spring up through the 2nd story window. It did the trick, but of course the crowbar doesn't make for a nice look on the windows.

Some years ago I found a wonderful carpenter, an older man who was game for some of my more "innovative" projects on the house. He refit the windows on the front of the house so that the Take the Window Out exercise could be done cleanly, ie, sans crowbar, and my windows could look nice again. Wonderful Old Carpenter has long since retired, but Matt is conversant with my design philosophy and the quirks of old houses. Tomorrow we will again remove the sashes, disassemble my bed, and hoist it down to the first floor, where it will be stored until moving day. One of my favorite antiques, a tall chest of drawers, will meet the same fate. Tonight I will sleep in my own bed for the last time for many months. Starting tomorrow I will sleep on an air mattress kindly supplied by my real estate agent until the move.

At settlement I mentioned the Take the Window Out exercise to the new buyers, and offered to let them move their larger pieces in at the same time. I was a bit nervous about revealing the need for this exercise, concerned that they'd say, "You have to do WHAT???"  To my great relief, the settlement attorney, a long-time resident of my 'hood, spoke up and casually related a story of when he had to do the same thing. (He lived across the street before I moved here.) Fortunately, my buyers seemed to take the news in stride.

DAW, Joshie was feral (and is still skittish around people he doesn't know) but The Little Orange Kitten was tame. I thought she might be feral when she showed up in the backyard, but she was just frightened. She was soooo little. She was smart enough to find a house with feral backyard cats and "hissss" her way into getting something to eat.

All has gone well so far here at the hospital. It turns out that my mom's cardiotherapy is basically a nurse-supervised exercise session - mainly on one of those bikes.  Very low key and low maintenance.

The hospital is presenting a presentation on "How To Manage Your Meds" this morning, so my parents will be staying for that. And then it will be lunch time.

*Now I just need to see if I can convince them not to go to Golden Corral for lunch. I don't kind Golden Corral, but since both my parents are still supposed to be following somewhat resticted diets, well... We shall see.

Vixdad went out this morning and got me the liquid painkiller - he had to go to three different pharmacies before he found one that had it and then the insurance wouldn't approve it so he had to pay $75 - it also made him very late for work do he won't be home until after 9.

I read the instructions and it keeps warning about nausea so now I am nervous about taking it but after all he went through to get it for me I really have to give it a try.

British Writer, Lawyer John Mortimer Dead at 85

LONDON —  British lawyer and writer John Mortimer, creator of the curmudgeonly criminal lawyer Rumpole of the Bailey, died Friday. He was 85.
Mortimer's family said he died early in the morning at his home in the Chiltern Hills northwest of London, with his wife and children at his side. They did not disclose the cause of death.

Mortimer combined a career as a lawyer with a large literary output that included dozens of screen and stage plays and radio dramas. His most famous creation was Horace Rumpole, a cigar-smoking, wine-loving barrister who appeared in a TV series and a string of novels and stories.

Ok, I swear I'm going to be better about reading posts now.  But boy it has it been a crazy week.
What a night last night was, I am exhausted!  I brought Toby in yesterday morning for his 10 am 4 month check-up.  I noticed his breathing was getting more and more labored, so we went in early because I was getting antsy about it.  The nurses heard him and immediately were really concerned.  The doctor came in and said "Ok, I'm sending you over to the Children's Hospital ER.  The hospital is connected to my Group Health building by an under-street tunnel, so we just picked up our stuff and a nurse walked us over.
We spent six hours sitting in the ER so they could monitor his condition.  His oxygen levels were good, but he was really having to work hard to keep them there.  They gave him a few breathing treatments, not albuterol, but just stuff to help loosen up all the gunk in his lungs.  Poor little guy just coughed and coughed.  They also used their turbo-nose sucker to help suction out a lot of the stuff in there.
By about 4 pm, he was sounding a lot better, but they decided to err on the side of caution and admit him for the night to keep an eye on him.
His preemie history meant that he's prone to respiratory things, and they wanted him in the hospital in case things went downhill quickly.
So Toby and I sat in a little room in the Observation Unit all night.  They did three more breathing treatments on him. and he coughed a lot. slept a bit, and nursed a ton.
I slept maybe two hours total, since I spent most of the night sitting up in a chair rocking him.  In the morning they decided he was looking better, breathing better, and still eating normally, so we could go home.  We have a follow up appointment next week, but the pedi in the hospital said he was pretty sure that we were over the worst of it, and he'd start getting better from now on.  I sure hope so!!

Slow morning.  I decided to make the difficult decision I had to make - which is, I'm afraid, to cancel the upcoming Kritzerland limited edition of Lady Oscar.  We hit a last-minute legal snag and while I'm basically in the right, I don't want to deal with bullies - it's simply not worth it.  I don't make enough money on these for it to be worth any hassles at all.  So, we're moving on to the release that was slated to follow that, and I'm hoping we can have it ready to announce in about two weeks.  I've got everyone working overtime on it.

I've written only a page and a half, but, as it turns out, I'd done eleven yesterday, so even if I only do two or three more, I'm in great shape.  I did do a bunch of rewriting of yesterday's pages, so that's done and they're smoother now, and I'm heading to the end of another chapter, which I'll definitely finish today.

I have googled different spellings and can't find it, but I figured JMK, bk or someone else here might know. ( I know JMK has a busy day today and might not be around!)

Quote
Jobim incorporated Gilberto's syncopated sound into song after song, finding that its supple form lent itself equally to irresistible melodies and jazz improvisation.

''Tom was always open to many musical ideas,'' says Nascimento, speaking from through an interpreter. Jobim wrote the music on most of the songs on Chega de Saudade, the 1959 Gilberto album that is bossa nova's ground zero (Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moraes was bossa's first lyricist). On the cover that Nascimento and the Jobim Trio recorded of Chega's title track, you can hear bossa's cool jazz influences, understated vocal style and playful pop openness -- plus the sound of a train in Minas Gerais. Bossa nova has become the soundtrack for lounges and cocktails, but with its plaintive tunes, it was created more for unhappy hours than happy ones.
According to Ed Morales' book The Latin Beat, ''An untranslatable Portuguese word roughly meaning melancholic nostalgia, or a longing for homeland, saudade is key in the bossa nova aesthetic.'' Saudade is the Brazilian blues, Daniel Jobim says.

All of this reminded me of something someone told me once -- something about putting pineapple into Jell-O when using fruit cocktail...or possibly of not using any fruit cocktail...I just don't remember exactly.  So, googled and found this:

"Jello consists of gelatin (a protein), sugar, and flavoring. Gelatin protein is insoluble. Amino acids, the building blocks of protein, are soluble. The Jello made with canned pineapple gels and that which is made with fresh pineapple doesn't. The bromelain enzyme in the fresh pineapple degrades the gelatin protein; digests it into a bowl of amino acids--still nutritious!! During the canning process, pineapple is heated to a temperature high enough to denature the bromelain enzyme (a protein itself) making it functionless. Thus, the gelatin protein molecules remain intact and insoluble. "

Has anyone ever had trouble with Jell-O not "setting" after mixing in pineapple?  And if so, was it canned pineapple or fresh?

I had a great aunt who was saying that to the pastor before a church potluck.  Guess what?  The Jell-O didn't set right.  My great aunt was known for her cooking and the pastor kidded about her to no end that she couldn't make Jell-O right.

OHH!!!!

So....

Jell-O was usually the dessert of choice when my Mom would prepare our school lunches when my brothers and I were in elementary school.  She would prepare individual cups for each of us, and she was always buying new Tupperware containers because my brothers and I had a tendency to lose them or accidentally throw them in the trash at school.  -This was long before Jell-O started making their own individual, portable and disposable cups.  So...

It was "Clean Up The Classroom Day" at Gales Ferry Elementary.  My fourth grade teacher, Mr. Sharack, assigned groups of students a different area of the classroom to clean, and towards the end of the day, we all cleaned out the "cubby holes" and coat closet.  There were cubby holes for each of us along the floor, and there were also some "overflow" cubby holes above the coat racks.  Since Mr. Sharack was the tallest one in the classroom, he "volunteered" to clean out the the overflow spaces...

"What's in this paper bag?... Is this your plastic container?"
-Yes.
"And this one too?"
-Yes.
"Oh.. what is this back here?..."
-Oh, that must be mine too...

By the time he was done, I believe I had re-collected at least 15 containers.  And not all of them had contained Jell-O.  Some had contained peaches, canned figs, fruit cocktail... And there were some (metal) spoons too.  Thankfully, I was just able to take all of them home, and not open them all of them there as part of our science class.

Sorry.

Don't forget the vegetable flavored Jell-O that you put carrots and celery in  (and whatever else the Jell-O company could think of).

Ah, yes.  That was Jell-O's attempt to become the new "aspic".

I watched the last four episodes I had remaining in the MY THREE SONS set. The last one turned out to be the best one. Tim Considine took a summer job in a forest ranger tower. Just he and this hunky but uncommunicative ranger (friend of his dad's) for the summer. Tim tried to turn basically a drudge job into something exciting thus giving him a great showcase for lots of emotions and activity.

Ah, that hunky ranger was none other then William Boyett who went on to play Sgt. McDonald on Adam-12. He shows up in a LOT of shows, particularly HIGHWAY PATROL.

Sadly he passed away in 2004. His son lives in Portland, as I recall.

Anyhoo...

We did indeed end up at Golden Corral for lunch today after my Mom's cardiotherapy session.  We all "behaved" for the most part, and more than got our fill of the various buffets for the true bargain price of $6.59.  After lunch, I basically took my parents on a "Best of Richmond" sight-seeing trip. We drove here, we drove there.  I showed them where some of the "cool shops" were located.  I pointed out some places where they could and should take the grandkids.  And I finally "convinced" my Dad that if he just kept on driving down one particular street he would find that it just loops around to another familiar neighborhood - no more fear of getting lost.

Alas, I didn't have any Jell-O at Golden Corral either.  ;)

I find it amazing if your wife never found out in all the years after.

The security issue boggles my mind.  It has always seemed to me the need to have a "dual" identity makes an employer a greater risk to be blackmailed to give up information.

I think some people just choose to believe (or dis-believe) what they will.

She came out here to visit my daughter for Christmas - and Woody and I were both there for the day. (I am told by others that anyone who sees Woody and I together for more than a hour or so can tell we're a couple.)

Your point on "blackmail;" is dead on. An openly gay man is no secuity threat - the closet ones, however, are.

The same twisted thinking finds its way into the gays in the military debate. The "we don't want to share living quarters with gay men" argument is absurd. They have been, are now, and will be sharing quarters with gay men - the only issue is do they want to know who they are. If they think the idea of sharing communal showers with gay men is a problem, imagine the problem of closeted gay men sharing communal showers with straight men! Talk about "mind control'!!!

PS Apparently I was the last to find out that everybody in my Philly family was already pretty sure of the score.

 Many years ago I ran into a old school mate at a party.  She had been married about a year - she was wearing one of those high waisted dresses, where the waist is right below the bust line and she definitely had a big round belly under there..  I then congratulated her on her preganancy...of course she was not!

Since then I vowed never to congratulate a woman on her pregnancy unless she personally told me she was.

~~~Continued Vibes for DRs Ann and Jed and DS Toby!!~~~
Slow morning.  I decided to make the difficult decision I had to make - which is, I'm afraid, to cancel the upcoming Kritzerland limited edition of Lady Oscar.  We hit a last-minute legal snag and while I'm basically in the right, I don't want to deal with bullies - it's simply not worth it.  I don't make enough money on these for it to be worth any hassles at all.  So, we're moving on to the release that was slated to follow that, and I'm hoping we can have it ready to announce in about two weeks.  I've got everyone working overtime on it.
That's too bad, BK.  Maybe in the future it all might work out.
What a horrible thought.
Those planes aren't very big.  Before Craig flew Yogi from Bucharest he didn't really appreciate my driving him from DC to Pittsburgh.  After the flight he REALLY appreciated I wouldn't let him put Yogi on one more flight, especially when it would have been on a smaller plane.
They've already alerted the authorities in NYC that if anyone happens to find a piece of luggage washed up on the shoreline of the Hudon River, they are to call 311 to make sure it is turned over over to the NTSB.  Otherwise, after all the luggage has been inspected, it will be returned to the respective owners.
From what "they" have said, all the luggage should still be on the plane.  However, there's probably some stuff from the cabin and overhead bins floating or sinking in the Hudson.
My DS used to get croup in the wintertime. It's scary when your baby can't breathe.
I grew up with horrible bronchial ailments.  Unfortunately my mother was a Registered Nurse and was convinced that slathering on inches of Vicks Vap-o-rub was the answer to my problems, abetted by a nonstop vaporizer and, worst of all, her sleeping with me.  My mother snored like no one you've ever heard (my father ended up getting a separate bedroom when they built their "dream house" just for that very reason).  So I have horrid memories of sticking to my pajamas in a fetid room with my mother buzz-sawing next to me.  Pressed between the pages of my mind.
Thanks Jose.  I forgot about the carry on.  I didn't see anyone carrying purses or briefcases.
Yeah, everyone did as they were told, and did not take anything with them - except for purses and cellphones, of course. ;)
I only saw cellphones.  Aside from my fannyback around my waist I like to keep my purse strapped over me, if I can get away with doing it.
I have asthma, and my parents were told that there was nothing wrong with me and that I was just trying to get attention.
That is terrible.  What did your parent's do?
I used to listen to my sister at night to make sure she was breathing.  Fortunately she outgrew the serious attacks.
I only got bronchitis.  As an adult I found out I do have a mild bronchial asthma.  It was a relief to find out why I tend to be out of breath when climbing hills.
Vibes and prayers for Ann, Toby, and Jed. I hope everyone gets some sleep tonight.
My DS used to get croup in the wintertime. It's scary when your baby can't breathe.
I grew up with horrible bronchial ailments.  Unfortunately my mother was a Registered Nurse and was convinced that slathering on inches of Vicks Vap-o-rub was the answer to my problems, abetted by a nonstop vaporizer and, worst of all, her sleeping with me.  My mother snored like no one you've ever heard (my father ended up getting a separate bedroom when they built their "dream house" just for that very reason).  So I have horrid memories of sticking to my pajamas in a fetid room with my mother buzz-sawing next to me.  Pressed between the pages of my mind.
And did you hear the concerns about using Vicks Vap-O-Rub (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28645016/) that came out earlier this week?
 ;D  I was thinking the same thing.  I'm sure glad my father, the doctor, never put that stuff on us.  Yuck!
So Der B what do you think would happen if Obama gave an executive order as head of the armed forces (assuming such a thing is legally possible) that no form of discrimination may be practiced in the armed forces for reason of sexual orientation?
Do other nations still have bans against gay soldiers/sailors etc.....?
Boy - do you want a dissertation! (I have spent many hours the past few years dealing with this subject - and there is considerable debate with the Gay community on timing and details)
A. Currently I know that the following, at least, have no ban on gays in the military:
Canada
Australia
United Kingdom
The Netherlands
France
Israel
B. Next comes the issue of "Orientation" vs. "Conduct". Some would propose allowing openly gay personnel to serve as long as they did not commit homosexual acts. Actually, The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) criminalizes (major felony) acts of Sodomy - and makes no distinction as to sex - oral/anal sex between husband and wife is just as felonious as between boy friends. In fact aggressive supporters of Don't Ask-Don't tell say that admitting to sexual orientation is a testament to the intent to commit homosexual acts - and use that as a justification to ban "tellers". It would seem that if there is to be a meaningful lifting of the ban, the UCMJ needs to be revised to decriminalize sexual conduct between consenting adults (except, perhaps, for between Officer and Enlisted).
C. Truman integrated the Armed Forces by Presidential decree - and told the Army resisters to just "suck it up" -and was successful. Clinton tried to do they same thing and the resulting uproar was Don't Ask-Don't Tell (DADT) - which satisfied nobody.
D. The status of DADT is very command dependent; there are still commands that go on witch hunts, and other commands that pointedly turn a blind eye.
E. Obama has said he will lift the ban - he carefully didn't say when or how.
F. There are a few well organized, well financed fringe groups that will move heaven and earth to stop a lifting of the ban. If Obama tries to "Lift the Ban" by Presidential decree in the first year, without laying a lot of ground work, it will blow up in his Administration's face. While there are some Flag Officers who support lifting the ban (including one retired Joint Chief), the majority seem to be opposed.
G. If Obama is to be successful, he must first get the Military Brass to agree to not openly oppose the change in policy.
(I have my own personal scheme on how to help this come about; one of the people on the short list for Sec'y of the Navy (SECNAV) is an openly gay man, William White - well qualified. Nominate White as SECNAV and get the Senate to approve it (if he can't do this, he'll never be able to lift the ban). Now, with a gay man as SECNAV, ask the Joint Chiefs to address the issue of allowing other gay man to serve openly. I want to see that Admiral stand up and say "no gays in the military" when his boss is one! )
H. As ground work for lifting the ban, Obama needs to get congress to pass other gay-related civil rights bills like the ENDA (Employee Non Discrimination Act) which has languished for years under the Bush Administration.
I. I disagree with many of my compatriots in that I think a big all-or-nothing push early on might just end up with nothing. If Obama is going to be successful in lifting the ban, he will need to devote a lot of time to careful planning and implementation. As much as I would like to see the ban lifted, I think the Administration has more important issues on its plate right now. I can live with "Yes, I'll lift the ban, later."
J. Lifting the ban is just a small part of the major issue of gay rights - nature/nurture/choice. As long as the opponents of gay equality believe homosexuality is something you choose, like a wardrobe, we will have a problem. Until the religious communities realize that "Gay" is not what I do, "Gay" is what I am we will have a long hard struggle
Well, that should cheer her up  ???
She's taking a drama class so she is required to see it and critique it as a class assignment.
Oh, that's ok then; she really needs some drama in her life :D
 I have never seen the play so I am not sure how it ends
 ( I mean obviously I know what really happened to Anne and her family, I am just not sure at what point in the story the play ends )
Well, the play ends when the Nazis crash through the door to the Secret Annexe.
George Stevens made a beautiful (but long) movie version of the play in 1959 that won several Oscars, and it's available on DVD. Well worth watching if you've never seen the play.
Three types of chocolate are folded into this rich cookie dough, which is baked just long enough for each cookie to set up on the outside while remaining oh so "ooey-gooey" inside. Messy? Yes, but perfectly so.
Sounds like everyone had a good Friday.  I am dealing with a personal issue - sometimes you just can't be nice - and sometimes you finally have to say things.
Perhaps this person is finally now OUT of my life....time will tell.
I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair.....  Vibes for JRAND ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shhh...are the calorie/grams of fat counters asleep?
Just remember: It's only caloric and fattening if you feel guilty about eating it.
JRand, I didn't have a bad day, but a lot of it was very frustrating.  I am very glad the week is over.  I want to work at home and at the office.  I need to go through my closet to see what fits me and what doesn't.   I'm about ready to donate a lot of stuff to charity and keep only the things I could get altered to fit me.  It's a scary step because it means if I gain weight I have nothing to wear.   But, none of it fits me now, so I think I'm going to take the plunge
I just uploaded some more of the pictures I took in DC this past Wednesday to my flickr account, so...
Inauguration Preparations, 1/14/09 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/23108900@N02/sets/72157612607442937/show/)
Monkey in DC (http://www.flickr.com/photos/23108900@N02/sets/72157612607922870/show/)
:)
Great Pics, DR Jose.
(I've been meaning to mention this, but you should spring for a lint remover for Monkey.  Grooming is important, especially in close-up photography.)
I try my best to keep monkey groomed and lint-free, but sometimes monkey is just so excited to have his picture taken again (and again and again) that he gets away from me.  Monkey also doesn't like to self-groom in public, if you get my drift.
It was reported in the Sun Sentinel today that in Okeechobee County the libraries have pulled The Curious George series of children's book under pressure from a right wing Christian group. It seems that they were concerned that every time Curious George would misbehave his owner the Man In The Yellow Hat would spank his monkey.
I see that the Zipper Factory theater closed down unexpectedly. Wasn't this the place where The Last Starfighter had its first run?
I believe the first production of The Last Starfighter was presented by The Storm Theatre (company) in a church - who's name escapes me right now - on 46th Street.
I won't be able to sleep in unfortunately.  She of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon, and I'll be doing an early morning jog and then having a noon meeting.  I may go to a screening of Benjamin Button tomorrow night.  Or I may hold off and see it Tuesday night at the DGA.  Monday night is Slumdog Millionaire, which I'll definitely go to.
I posted the notes, and normally I can manually change the date so it reads tomorrow, but for some reason it won't do it.  It's always done it before, but maybe something has changed with the new board.  Who knows.  So, the date will be wrong unless I can fix it in the morning.  For now, I'm going to bed.
