The funny kind of bad?
I was surprised byll this sturm und drang about broadcasting! If they drag out this delay with the conversion to digital broadcasting for the next ten years, it don't worry me; I've been on cable for 20 years since it was impossible to watch television otherwise in Manhattan. I originaly got cable because I wanted to tape the Disney Channel broadcast of the Royal Shakespeare Company's NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, but when I saw the difference on my tv between the clear cable image and the snow-filled crap from the rabbit ears I never went back.
I currently have a temperature of 103, nausea, and - not to put too fine a point on it - stuff coming out of both ends. :P
Needless to say, I did not make it in to work today.
Here's another funny clip about the evils of Pay/Cable television. I remember seeing these ads at the movies in the late 60s and early 70s and the petitions in the theatre lobbies.

Oh I got my WARNER BROS Romance Classics today!!! So tonight will be Troy Donahue night at my house.
I'll be working on the new-to-video SPACE BUDDIES from Disney in Blu-ray this afternoon. I've never seen either of the previous films (though I'm familiar with the premise), so it'll be interesting to see how this looks in high definition.
There are a few bonus features on the disc, too, but since the movie is only 84 minutes, I'm hoping to be completely done with it this afternoon.

I'm wondering if today might be a good day to ride the new light rail downtown to take a photo of the floating jellyfish and then post it here. What do you think?
I am curious to know from the folks here -- is it difficult to install that converter box? Has anyone here done it? (It seems most folks here have cable or satellite.)
Tuesday morning greetings! We have several inches of snow on the ground, with more predicted.

LOL! TV Guide ran article after article about the evils of pay TV back then. I wonder if I was the only one who imagined that there was going to be an actual box with coin slots attached to my TV requiring quarters everytime I wanted to watch my shows.

MBarnum, you just gave me an idea. I just sent an email to the folks in charge of service projects suggesting we help folks install those converter boxes if they need help.
Thanks.
All of the seniors in my senior choir are calling me, completely panicked, as there are actual flakes of snow on the ground, preventing them from singing today. ;)

Off to Philadelphia (weather allowing) soon for a very quick visit, but mainly to see MY NAME IS ASHER LEV at the Arden Theater
It is currently snowing here in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
Not heavily, but it is sticking, and our driveway is covered with white.
Since der B was talking about our heading to the markets later today, I suppose I'd better scrape all that white to the sides, or we'll never make it up the driveway.
George, how often would you even need air conditioning in your part of the country? Bryan did need to put it in his condo in Portland.
Boo!
I do have to say that I am sided with MBarnum on this issue. The clip I posted is funny, but I think it has a basis in reality for a good portion of the elderly population in our country who are not tech-savvy in the least. And aside from that, there's the way that the FCC bungled the converter box coupon distribution. First they put out such emphasis on how consumers can save $40 with the coupons, then they don't print out enough and largely ignored the overrun on requests. And the coupons themselves had a two month expiration date! What was the purpose of that?
As far as the delay impeding any use of the newly available airwaves, the technology to take advantage of it is still in developmental stages. A delay of four months is not going to effect any progress in that area at all.
What's digital tv?

I'm hoping to get one when I get my tax refund. The condo complex is replacing all the roofs and mine is scheduled to be done this spring. I can buy the skylight and flashing and the company that is installing the roofs will be able to install my skylight (for a charge, of course), but I'm hoping the installation will cost less than if I had them come at any other time, since they're going to be on the roof of my three-story condo anyway. :)

DR Laura - we are getting new carpet in two rooms tomorrow! I took pictures of the old, and will post to photobucket; I'll take pictures of the new once it is laid.
Jennifer I have always had vision problems, needing reading glasses just made it worse. I have problems tolerating progressive lenses, which I must wear to see. Until I removed most of the reading portion from them they made me dizzy & nauseous. Since I can read up close without glasses that is what I do most of the time. So far separate reading glasses havent helped.
As for the Ott Light, I have not purchased one. Other book lights havent worked well or bother Keith, fortunately my flashlight is bright enough. Reading at night not to disturb Keith is just somewhat uncomfortable & bothers my neck at times.
I do miss holding a book with just regular distance glasses, not only for the comfort but for the speed. I was an extremely fast reader. On the bright side I can still see well enough to read. :)
Great news, Jennifer. Too bad she had to have such a scare.
She is very happy about that.

Hey i just wanted to say a big thank you for all the vibes for my sister and her baby.
She went for another ultrasound today and the numbers they were concerned about were very positive. Then when she got home they called with the results from the amnio. And it was good news. Everything seems fine.
In other news...
I played for some wonderful people today. Good singers. Good auditions.
I did self-fluster myself twice during the course of the session. The first time was when I realized that the piece of music that was placed in front of me happened to be written by someone sitting "behind the table". I kept deciding between playing every single note and rhythm on the page, or playing what I knew I could play and what would most support the singer. Thankfully, not a trainwreck, but not "comfy".
The second self-flustering came about after I had said, "Yes, I can read it up a step." -Before I had looked at the music, or even asked what she was singing. It turned out to be a Maltby & Shire song. Spoo! Again, no trainwreck, just not "comfy".

It would take six months for that to happen on General Hospital.
On TCM - Ann Sothern killed her sister and her brother-in-law Zachary Scott was knocked out and owned the gun, he couldn't remember anything - so he took the rap...and is headed for the chair.
However Zachary's daughter Gigi Perreau saw the whole thing - but she blocked it out - however child psychologist Nancy Davis Reagan is on the case and it looks bad.....for Ann Sothern.
All of our snow has been what I believe is called "powder." Very light, fluffyish stuff, full of enchantment.
I really do wish it had arrived a month (and two days) ago, when it would have been appropriate.
Better late than never, I suppose.

Have you had a pair specially prescribed for computer viewing/reading?
I can't use my progressives on the computer or for casual reading; I have a special pair with the presciption field of focus locked into the 12-24" range for reading/computer viewing - they work great (just don't try tp look up at a clock across the room :)

It's finally lightly snowing here but it's nothing to whoop-up about.
The old guard skating commentators (Scott Hamilton and Sandra Bezic) were certain Johnny Weir would be offered the third spot on the men's team despite his abysmal performance.
The problem with doing major Broadway revivals or movie remakes is that you're always competing with the memory of the original.
Even if the remake is better, it will always lose.
There are, of course, exceptions, but that is generally the case.
I understand that the recent revival of SOUTH PACIFIC was terrific, but when you think of that show, you still think of Mary Martin and Enzio Pinza.

If the three men who finished as the top three had been mediocre skaters or had skated as poorly as Johnny did, then I might concede that his track record might earn him a spot, but with the three of them being far stronger at this year's event than Johnny, it really was a no-brainer if they wanted to give the U.S. the best possible chance to earn 3 spots at next year's Worlds.

Peanut Processor Knowingly Sold Tainted Products
It Found Salmonella 12 Times
By Lyndsey Layton
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, January 28, 2009; Page A01
The Georgia peanut plant linked to a salmonella outbreak that has killed eight people and sickened 500 more across the country knowingly shipped out contaminated peanut butter 12 times in the past two years, federal officials said yesterday
Officials at the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which have been investigating the outbreak of salmonella illness, said yesterday that Peanut Corporation of America found salmonella in internal tests a dozen times in 2007 and 2008 but sold the products anyway, sometimes after getting a negative finding from a different laboratory.
Companies are not required to disclose their internal tests to either the FDA or state regulators, so health officials did not know of the problem.
