Well, you've read the notes, the notes were quite French and should be pardoned, and now it is time for you to post until the French cows come home.

And, of course, the French cognate for cognate is apparenté.

So....what is everyone's vote for WORST ORIGINAL CAST RECORDING....worst as in technical or singing not content......

Good question...

To me, there's technical/sloppy like the OCR of A CHORUS LINE, which has so much background noise that I think they recorded it in the cafeteria.  But then there's ANNIE, recorded in Columbia's SQ(?) technology, which was aimed for quadrophonic stereos.  But on just plain old two channel stereos, the voices bounce back and forth like ping-pong balls between speakers.

I do not like any of the singing on the FOLLIES IN CONCERT recording--too much emphasis on the performers and not on the songs (and most of those performers delivered lackluster performances.)

$10,000 friggin dollars for a minimum bid?!?!?

I know it's the estate of Klotz that is putting it up on E-Bay and according to the American Theatre Wing the rules about selling a Tony don't apply to this one. Still, greed is alive and well.

Wednesday morning greetings!  Yesterday was quite interesting, weather-wise.  I left for Dayton about 10:30, attended 2 meetings, and did errands both before and after, in sunshine and on dry roads.  When I left the downtown Dayton post office about 4:15, I called Richard and he said there was a blizzard here at home (about 25 miles south).  On my drive home, I saw no snow until just north of here.  Apparently, the storm tracked south and Cincinnati (about 30 miles to the south) got even more snow than we did.  Today the sun's out and the fresh snow is sparkling.

Anthony is on Long Island getting the car, etc. for the trip north(west). He said the snow is heavier on Long Island than here in the city (not unusual at all). He said driving was treacherous. He was going to do some errands yesterday when he arrived but the conditions made him change his mind. He just stayed in and ate comfort food and got himself ready for the trip.

Yeah, far too pricey in my mind, particularly for an award for GRIND.  Now if it was the Tony she had won for FOLLIES, maybe the amount would be warrented.

The estate has also been selling some of her costume sketches for FOLLIES on eBay.  But again, at $4,000 a pop, too pricey for my wallet.

Not a lot of snow down in the South of Jersey--just enough to have to spend a half hour shoveling the side walk and cleaning off the car this morning.  The roads were just wet for the most part so driving over the bridge was a breeze.

Good morning, all! Such a morning it's been! After sleeping too late, i had to deal with a long telephone conversation about a project that's currently not moving in any direction and the whys and wherefores.

I have one last group of receipts to tally for tomorrow's IRS session, more edits for BABES, and maybe some work on SPRING IS HERE. Yesterday, another job landed. so that's good.

DR Dan(the Man), I was at the FOLLIES IN CONCERT, and once I realized it was about the performers and not the score - meaning the recordng would be the same - I could care less. Mr Patinkin's one-man masturbatory "Buddy's Blues" was the nadir for me, and when at the end Barbara Cook as Sally made the comment about how glad she was she came, I thought "Sally Durant Plummer is no longer the unhappy deluded lady of the original; I've been robbed!"

RE: last night's AMERICAN IDOL

I am sort of getting annoyed at how many people they are not showing.

There are some (who will surely be in the top 36) who are getting ridiculous amounts of airtime. And there are many who have still never been seen.

I know with 2 weeks of Hollywood auditions being shown we will most likely get to see everyone. But i just find it quite unfair.  Don't they understand that people pick their favorites early. And they need to show all the good ones, not just a few who will have a ridiculous advantage.

I don't think they do this but i wish we could see all 160 people singing last night (on their website).

I have a question for the library workers here (or even people who use the library a lot).

Is it common to cut up little paperbacks?

My sister's library takes their small paperbacks and cuts off the front and back and glues it on to this hard covered frame.

Now it obviously makes the books last a lot longer. But it just seems so wrong to me to cut up books.

RE IDOL:

Hopefully with the group numbers tonight, we'll hear more singing but thinking to years past, that wasn't the case either, so I just don't know. The manufactured "drama" of people having meltdowns shown on-camera is old and unappealing. Oh, I don't doubt the singers' sincerity. I'm sure the pressure is enormous. But the camera going in close to get all of the emotional collapses is not entertaining to me.

It's common in bookstores to return overstock paperbacks by tearing off the covers and returning only the covers for credit.

DR Jennifer - that's a standard rebinding practice for paperbacks.  The alternative would probably be discarding the book all together.

$10,000 friggin dollars for a minimum bid?!?!?

I know it's the estate of Klotz that is putting it up on E-Bay and according to the American Theatre Wing the rules about selling a Tony don't apply to this one. Still, greed is alive and well.

Oh, g'arn!

As I think I may have mentioned when I first came down with this, I *did* have a gourmet brownie the day I started feeling sick and my first thought was that one of the eggs in that hadn't quite been cooked the whole way.  ;)

Oh, and TODAY IN THEATRE HISTORY...

Thorton Wilder's OUR TOWN opened today in 1938 at the Henry Miller Theatre.

To celebrate, don't forget your rubbers!

The Henry Miller Theater is now just a shell, literally, of the former facility. When redevelopment began on 42nd and 43rd Streets east of Broadway huge patches of the landscape were torn down, except for the "landmarked" facade of the Henry Miller. It was saved but the interior was not (because the interior was not landmarked) so we will have a new Henry Miller Theatre with the old outside but a brand new inside.

DR JOSE whose life is being portrayed in that show you saw?  And did you know the MCNY does regular musical evenings?

DR JRand - It's probably best to consult one of the press releases (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/125876.html) or the show's website (http://www.thestoryofmylife.com/) for the "who?" of the show. -Especially since I'm still a bit cloudy-headed right now.

What is "MCNY"?

Once again, I really did like The Story of My Life.  However, since I feel sort of close to the production, I shall refrain from posting a more elaborate review (for now).  However, if any other DRs happen to see the show, review and opine away!

*But I will say it was nice to hear Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations after listening to the synth'd demos for a while. It's scored for piano, drums, bass, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, bassoon(!) and trumpet. Beautiful work as always.  -And Mr. Tunick was in attendance last night along with the rest of the creative team.

My "Ask BK" question.

What do you recall about your working on the MASH episode that I saw last week, particularly your impression of the cast and crew.

Was MASH a show that you watched regularly at that time? And what was your opinion of that series, if so.

I actually have a vivid memory of doing the show, for several reasons.  One reason was that I was on the show one day for my two scenes.  It was very nerve-wracking because my musical version of The Comedy Of Errors was in the American College Theater Festival finals and we had a performance that night in Long Beach.  I was petrified I wouldn't get out in time, and since I was playing one of the keyboards...

When I arrived, I remember Loretta Swit coming up to me and shaking my hand, saying "Welcome to MASH."  I'd never watched the TV version.  I met Alda, who was very nice.  The one person I never saw the entire time was the director - Earl Bellamy if I remember correctly.  Never met him, never saw him, never talked to him.  I'm sure he was there, but I found that really odd.  Alda was very complimentary when I was doing my little scene in the bed.  I did get out by six, and I remember the traffic was absolutely horrendous to Long Beach.  I think I got there ten minutes before curtain.

The guys in my basement are really nice.  They have the tack strips down and the pad installed.  They just took a break for lunch and to cut the carpet to fit the room. Then they'll come back and do the carpet.  It's already a lot warmer in the basement.

I let the girls go see the progress.  They were pretty freaked by the pad. I think it was the glue to put down the pad. Whoa!  I opened the sliding glass door for a little bit and it smells much better.

I walked up Broadway to 96th Street and down Amsterdam. That's 28 blocks. It's a bit slippery out but the cold wasn't awful and I enjoyed myself. There were several ambulances and fire trucks out with screaming sirens so something was afoot and the Broadway downtown side was blocked off at 94th Street by police cars. I make it a rule to curb my curiosity and clear out of the way.

One last set of receipts to tally up and my taxes are finished. I just paid my third of the property taxes on the Ohio white elephant so my fiscal duties for the week are nearly accomplished.

Well, Bailey was great at the specialist's and we really liked her. He snuggles with everyone he meets and kisses them and makes friends fast. She confirmed that what looks like a swollen tear duct is a cyst between the two tear ducts. It could be removed by surgery ($2500!) but that could also create more problems than it might be worth. But between the time we took him to his regular et yesterday and this morning before we left, somehow the cyst drained. (I'm sorry, I should have warned the squeamish.) It's just clear liquid in there. I don't know if he rubbed his face until he opened it up a bit at the bottom but it's much better, so we may just continue to keep an eye on it (a little opthamology humor) and see what happens.

So now our plan is just to have his teeth cleaned and while he's knocked out, do a little exploring, but no surgery at this time.

Thanks for all the vibes...maybe that's what created the drainage! :-)

This is quite an exciting week. Today I'm getting my  new carpet and Friday Edith is getting married!   I am going to be one of the witnesses. It's just a small civil ceremony and they will do a bigger wedding in California next summer.  She's tried to play it down, but I know she's excited.

As soon as the carpet is in, I'm going to go get a gift certificate for them.  There are such good sales on and I don't really know what they need or want so I'll get a certificate and they can get whatever they want.  Of course she also gets a paid day off, that goes without saying.  I'm very excited about it and was thrilled when she asked me to be a witness

Because one egg is un oeuf.

I spent most of the afternoon with MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA. It's a affecting war drama (with a little mystery thrown in), but it could have been shortened by at least 45 minutes.

I certainly didn't expect to see D.B. Sweeney, Robert John Burke, Walton Goggins, and Gordon-Joseph Levitt in the movie. Peter Frechette pops up briefly in a courtroom scene, too.

DR Jennifer - that's a standard rebinding practice for paperbacks.  The alternative would probably be discarding the book all together.

I did not know that. I need to check my library. But i have never seen a book rebinded in this way. Although all the soft covers i've taken out from my library have been the larger one. I am going to check and see what the smaller ones look like. But i just found it very odd (it looks odd too).

The CD should still have some sort of "digital identity", even if the track names are not encoded. I've imported a couple of CDs into iTunes that have not the track names encoded on the disk, but it was just a matter of fetching those names from the online database based on the disc's' identity.

But the delay also could make the confusing transition even more perplexing for some viewers.

TV stations are allowed to seek federal approval to turn off their analog signals before the new deadline. So instead of nearly all broadcasters making the switch on Feb. 17, stations now may ...

... make the switch at different times over the next four months.
That could create another hiccup: Some converter boxes don't have the ability to "pass through" analog signals. As a result, in areas where both digital and analog signals are transmitted, viewers with the wrong converter box may have to unplug the device to watch one channel broadcast in analog, then plug it back in to watch another in digital.

I'm going to do an about face here and say that I don't think they should delay the transition.  If they had made this decision months ago, when they would have had time to plan out exactly what needed to be done to insure that everyone was informed and prepared, then it would have been worthwhile.  As the FCC stands now, I don't believe it's capable of what needs to be done between now and June.  This will probably be a waste of time

Internet browsing suggests that at least the following states (or locals within these state) have photo-radar:

New York, Illinois, Maryland, Tennessee, New Mexico, Virginia, Ohio, Texas, North Carolina, Oregon, and, of course, Arizona.

It appears that the theme song from Gran Torino (Jamie Cullum) is only available as a download.  I thus can not have a hard copy and can not compile  a disc of this year's Golden Globe and Oscar song nominees.

I've tried by converting to wave files but it still can't be copied.  I am vexed!

Tom, Google "Protected Music Converter" and download it--you get a couple of uses free before you need to pay the Shareware price, which isn't bad, as I recall.

I always wash the eggs before cracking them open.

Won't help with the bugs inside the eggs:

After reading the symptoms of salmonella in this morning's paper, I'm thinking that may indeed may have been what I had a week or so ago.  Though I can't for the life of me figure out where I got the peanuts, as that is not a regular part of my diet.

I was afraid that I was going to get salmonella, but then I heard the cause was peanuts.

I think I've written close to seven pages, so I'll now take a break and I'm either done for the day or I'll do some finessing later and maybe finish the chapter I'm on (just another half-page).  Then it's on to the final three chapters, probably another thirty-five pages or so.

It's common in bookstores to return overstock paperbacks by tearing off the covers and returning only the covers for credit.

Heck, there's a gal that work for the company that supplies us with paperbacks that sits down with the books that aren't selling and gets ripped just tears into her work.

One of the carpet installers gave me the name of a guy who is a finish trimmer and loves to do side jobs.  So, I'm going to call him and get an estimate.  I know I can do it myself, but if he is reasonable enough, it would be done a lot quicker and probably a lot better :)

We have arranged a hotel for the extra 4 days at a very reasonable rate for a very nice place. So at least that's done.

The Vixter is far too nice to rip what needed to be ripped - Vixdad had a go but he's British and doesn't have the killer instinct this New Yorker has.

A strongly worded letter is being worked on.  We own 2 weeks at this place and have done for over 20 years.  We were promised something "absolutely" which was not delivered and I am not happy at all.

Oh well ... no time to get the blood pressure up

DR George may be able to confirm this, but I think libraries can even purchase new paperbacks pre-bound in the manner you describe.  The library from which I just retired acquired paperbacks with heavy-duty clear plastic covers.

Prebound books can be bought, but they're more expensive than regular paperbacks (of course).  But they do last a lot longer, so money is saved in the long run.  Otherwise, libraries can send tattered but otherwise still readable books to a bindery, where the covers are removed and the pages are put into new hardback covers with or without the original covers used as artwork.  It's done in our library system all the time.  Ultimately, it's the information in the book that the patron wants and the library wants to keep.  We're not storing "collectibles" to retain the value of historical items, so the original condition and format are not important.

It doesn't matter if it's a protected file, as a lot of downloads are.  I ran into this sometime ago and downloaded the program I mentioned to Tom and it worked great.  I can convert to all file formats but if it's protected, it's protected and you won't be able to copy it.

RE: American Idol.

DR Jose, i think you are right. Some of the hollywood shows in other years might have been 2 hours. So maybe they are just saying that they are having extended 2 week coverage.

I'm guessing DR MattH will not like tonight's show. They focus a lot on the drama and very little on the singing. Also they cut a few people with potential. And there are 75 left and they have not shown most of them. It's very frustrating.

Does anyone know if there is a website that shows things like the group numbers. There were 25 groups. Yet they did not show most of them. Or they just featured one person in the group and did not show the rest!

Rick Nelson - Hello Mary lou/Travelin' Man
Buddy Holly - Peggy Sue/Every Day

If TNT's new show "Trust Me" doesn't pick-up the writing, it will be short-lived. The second installment was a grade or two below the opener.

der Brucer

The ratings fell precipitously from its premiere numbers, so it is indeed in trouble. I'm not sure it was such a good idea to try to premiere this show opposite fresh episodes of network favorites on the heavily rated Monday night lineups even with THE CLOSER as a lead-in.

And I concluded my evening watching tonight's LIFE episode. How great to have the wonderfully wacky Charlie Crews back munching on his fresh fruit and seeing the world from his own unique vantage point.

But I have to think that these long hiatuses are not good for shows that are struggling to find an audience. I think it would have been better to rerun the entire first season during the holidays and January instead of just letting it slip off the air and then try to bring it back like this. You certainly don't see CBS EVER taking its shows off (unless they go on permanent leave); the network just reruns the hell out of them.

It's too bad that my schedule only allows me to visit HHW late at night. It's me and the crickets!

JRand, WEEKEND IN HAVANA done arrived today! Thanks so much!

You know I have never seen this movie and I will look forward to it....imagine  both John Payne and Cesar Romero on the same movie set. I would have been in heaven on the movie set. Gosh, with both of them there I wouldn't know which way to turn!

Well, my bags - well, my bag - is packed for my trip to Memphis tomorrow.  And I actually managed to get five days worth of clothing in my carry-on - meaning I did not overpack this trip. :) And I won't have to stand in line to check my bag tomorrow either!  :D

And since I don't have to be up that early in the morning, I believe I'm going to watch tonight's "Damages" via the DVR before I turn in.

House Votes to Postpone Transition to Digital TV

I'm going to do an about face here and say that I don't think they should delay the transition.   As the FCC stands now, I don't believe it's capable of what needs to be done between now and June.  This will probably be a waste of time

Actually, there is nothing the FCC can do; Congress needs to appropriate more money for converter box coupons and social service organizations need to go about helping the eldery and other techo-confused folks. The best play is to let the transition go on and then muster the troops to solve "real problems" not the "maybe/might be ones.

Several GUESTS look at the same old thread over and over and over again.  I'm listening to a Stanley Black album called Satan Superstar - music from horror movies, and maybe ones featuring devils.

Not only do we have photo radar vans that move from place to place, we also have permanent cameras all along the freeways.

We have all that stuff, too. But we're not on the list!

The "list" I posted was not exhaustive - just a representation.

Hi MBarnum!

Last night was a benefit acapella concert for a friend of mine and his mother, who were killed in their home over winter break. Jim and Mrs. Smith were unbelievable people, the kind of people you see in movies, and read about in the papers. Their doors and hearts were always open, everyone called Mrs. Smith "Momma". Jim was a music major with me at JMU, and he participated in one of the acapella groups on campus, Exit 245 (sidenote: check them out! for a college acapella group they're really quite good).

Their daughter/sister Sarah is a music major as well, and graciously hosted last nights event. Sarah has been so strong through this whole ordeal, and amazes me every day with her ability to function at a normal level, let alone come back to school and participate in the same activities she normally would. Jim's favorite song was "Don't Stop Believin", and Exit 245 arranged a version with Sarah singing the solo, intermixed with lyrics from "Let it Be". It was an incredible special and theraputic night for a wounded community. I have had 6 college-aged friends whose mothers have passed on in the past 3 years alone. I wonder if anyone else had to deal with something so unbelievable at this age? What advice can I give? Our group of friends is large and close-knit, and we're all here for each other, but there's only so much we can do.

Sorry to ramble, but it's just on my mind. Anyone with a facebook can look up Jean C. Smith and see the amazing wall posts and messages that people have left for her- her profile is open. This woman was life changing, and the loss of her and her son has changed our lives forever.

Thank you DRs for the suggestions etc.  I now have a "hard" copy.

Aah, Inter-hemisphere networking at its finest.

You certainly don't see CBS EVER taking its shows off (unless they go on permanent leave); the network just reruns the hell out of them.

And as you previously noted (or I read elsewhere), re-runs of both NCIS and The Mentalist did quite well in the ratings.
