Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a touch of insanity, and now it is time for you to post until the insane cows come home - they're currently acting in a production of Antigone at the AhMOOnson Theater.

DR TCB...   you asked about my reaction to the news about Chastity.  First surprise, I suppose.

I've always found gender identity issues headache-inducing.
It's like in Victor/Victoria....   A woman?  Pretending to be a man?  Pretending to be a woman??       :)

It's not that I don't feel empathy for such individuals.  I just find it raises questions that play with my head.

Has any DR heard anything about Woody Allen's latest film, Whatever Works?

Apparently, Allen took a never-filmed script from his 1970s comic heyday and updated it, while retaining the tone and charm of his most beloved early films.

Good morning, all! I have to head off to a meeting at Toyland, which will be nothing like last week's tension-filled ordeal, thankfully. I also have to pay a visit to my tax man over a horrible NY State Income Tax problem I had thought was resolved in 2005! Well, no, alas, it wasn't. After that a visit to see my bank manager about that $264 I believe they owe me. Hopefully, I'll hear from the Loesser office about a check; the problem's the timing with everyone out on vacation.

I slept better last night than the night before, although I was so tired I completely forgot about ROYAL PAINS and BURN NOTICE; I'll check the schedule for reruns and tape them over the weekend.

TOD:
DVD: some films with Mary Martin and Bing Crosby and a Jean Arthur comedy
CD:  Mother Goose, Liz Callaway, Malcolm Gets and the evilest queen in show biz
  VCR:  curiosities

Friday.  Oh well.  I only work 5 hours, so I can't into too much trouble.

As for the DVR question asked by DR MATTH DR GEORGE and DR MBARNUM.

Saturday at 3 p.m. EST on the History Channel.  My sister's episode of UFO HUNTERS is supposed to be broadcast.  If I end up with three copies of that, it would be great - one to keep, one to share, and one for the store.

The episode is titled "Dark Presence", so if it is really broadcast, and it is that TITLE, that is the one.

Thanks so much.  I will be at work, and I do not have copying capabilities because of the way my system is set up....sometimes I can record when I am there.....sometimes not.  But it NEVER works when I set it record when I am away.

Last night's sold out house saw some MAJOR baubles by both our leads in a couple of solo songs...."I've Come to Wive It Wealthily in Padua" and "I Hate Men."  Most distressing....and both in the same LONG scene.

I was listening backstage....hmmmmm....Fred messed up.  Then during "I Hate Men", there was music but NO singing coming over the speaker....I jumped up, I thought Kate had had a serious problem maybe she fainted or something.

Of course MOST of the kids backstage were still talking loudly and walking around and texting and doing other distracting things.....I said, "What's wrong out there?"  And of course they had no idea that Kate was having a problem and the show was in difficulty until I pointed out that KATE SHOULD BE SINGING RIGHT NOW.....

Oh well.....hopefully it will be fixed for tonight's sold out performance.

Yesterday Miss Karen asked re: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

Quote
DR Jennifer ~ Have you read or heard how they match the couples? Is it strictly drawing from a hat like they supposedly do for the dances each week? I was just wondering cause like Broadway Evan and Randi match each other perfectly (Cat was even kidding them about how cute and short they were -- and she wanted to put them in her pocket -- of course, she's like 6 ft tall) Would it hurt a couple if a really short guy got a really tall girl -- and then when they do the ball room dances, would it look strange, for example?

I really like Cat as a host -- she really grows on ya, I think.

I also love Cat. She is so beautiful and compassionate towards the dancers. I think she is wonderful.

I am not positive but i believe they match the couples in the beginning. In the middle they choose couples by draw. And in the beginning if people lose their partners they are paired with the remaining contestant.

But i'm pretty sure that the producers set up the original couples. I'm not sure how they do it. I'd love to hear their rationale.

It's tough because some people were shown a lot during Vegas week. And i expect that they will remain safe even if they aren't that great.

Until the UPS drove up a few minutes ago, MIRACLE was going to be it, but UPS delivered THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK on Blu-ray, and this is the first Fox Blu-ray I've gotten before street date, and I'm very tempted to do it today and maybe MIRACLE tomorrow. Both are long and have quite a few bonus features with them, so each will take most of the day to complete. I have seen ANNE FRANK before (owned it on both laserdisc and DVD) but haven't seen MIRACLE.

Decisions, decisions....

And as for the digital switch - or the switch to digital...

Well, each TV station is switching at various times today.  The WNBC here in New York is flipping the switch sometime this afternoon.  -And, of course, they will be running a special at Noon to go over the "switch to digital". Again. In any case...

A friend of mine from college is the "Northeast Regional DTV Coordinator" for the FCC.  Needless to say, she is sooooo looking forward to tomorrow. She will finally get to sleep in for the first time in over a year. She only had to coordinate, not implement, nor follow-up.

Just make sure that you are prepared for the switch to digital:  have plenty of canned foods, bottled water, flashlight batteries, and cash on hand.  Make sure that you are familiar with the evacuation routes where you live.  And if you should find yourself outdoors without shelter, find a nearby overpass to seek safety.  Avoid animals that look like they are behaving strangely.

Hmmm... Back to digital for a sec...  I was just checking some info on the interwebs, and came across this:

"Cable TV systems are not required to convert, but must-carry rules will require local stations to be carried in analog for at least three years after the over-the-air cutoff, until early 2012. Must-carry rules requiring digital-only subchannels to be carried have been a source of contention."

There will still be "standard" and "HD" versions available of various channels.  The "switch to digital" affects how the show is transmitted and received, not what kind of TV set you have at home. -Since most HD channels are in "wide-screen" or some semblance thereof.

But, then again, I could be totally wrong about that.

I suspect in the case here, there will still be two channels per network since some people subscribe only to basic cable which uses the low end of the band (2-99) and the high def channels use upper tiers of channels (on Time Warner here 200-299)

I've wondered the same thing, DR DAW.  If I don't know who's behind a follower, I just block them.

Some people - more like "accounts" - have automated programs that "search" out new Followers/Followees.  Some scour other people's Follower's lists - like mine, for example - and then send out Follow requests to anyone on that list - like you.

Right now, the spambots really seem to be in high gear right now - lots of get-rich, get-more-followers and get-more-adult-content "people" asking to be a Follower.  BLOCK! BLOCK! BLOCK!

You should enjoy THE INTERNATIONAL.  We watched it a couple of weeks ago, and it's pretty good.

BTW: With my move and everything else that's going on right now, I guess I missed your comments on Eastwood's CHANGELING.

Not perfect, by Sandy and I did enjoy it.  The film took some minor dramatic license, but it did follow the actual facts of the case pretty well...and it didn't bow to a "Hollywood ending".

Why didn't you like it?

Argh!

There was NO indication to me or others about our time of departure for DC. I assumed we were going in a group. It turns out we were supposed to purchase our own tickets and put in for expenses and we will all meet at Union Station!!! That's fine except you should have told me 2 and a half weeks ago when I could have gotten a RT Acela train for a reasonable price. Now, since I'm getting the ticket tomorrow I can't take Acela because it's out of budget. To get the reasonable price you have to buy 14 days in advance. It will be over $300 RT for Acela. I'll take the Northeast Regional for $72 each way.

DR Ben - If you call Amtrak - 1-800-USA-RAIL (872-7245) - and bypass "Julie", the reservation agents can sometimes override the 14- and 7-days in advance pricing if the train you want to book has a low booking level. And sometimes, some "discounts" magically pop up on their screens.  -They want to fill those seats.  Just keep asking if there's a special, cheaper rate available.

I was, of course, awakened at seven by solo hammering - there is ONE guy there hammering and sawing - I could not get out of bed and, in fact, only got out of bed about ten minutes ago, so I'm now a little late in getting started and must drive these boxes over to the UPS Store right now - probably won't do the jog as it's fairly nasty-looking out.

I do not see any screaming, blaring headlines today stating that Civilization As We Know It has come to an end because of the switchover to digital television transmission.

Does this mean that cable services will stop offering separate channels for the HD version of this network and that?

But, then again, I could be totally wrong about that.

eBay has done it again - I've been using basic search for years - and, for example, if I were to type in the letter "b" I would see all the items starting with "b" that I ever searched for.  The basic search page seems to have disappeared and only advance search with its endless options is coming up, which means that all those searches I've made that used to show in a list are now gone forever.  Bravo, eBay, and take your "improvements" and stick them up your rectal cavity.  And before someone comes on and tells me that basic search is that bar at the top, that's not what the basic search page was - it was like the advanced page but much simpler with only the options for highest priced/lowest priced and that sort of thing.  So, instead of purchasing an LP I needed I simply went to amazon and got it there.

The just-pased smoking regulation bill:

Quote
The bill aims to could curb the roughly 400,000 deaths a year attributed to smoking. It would allow the FDA to reduce how much nicotine is in cigarettes.

Well guess what? If you reduce nicotine content you will INCREASE smoking deaths! Nicotine is not the killer, the smoke pollutants are. When you decrease the amount of nicotine per cigarette, smokes , who are addicted to the drug, need to smoke more cigarettes and thus inhale more pollutants.

California can't afford the death penalty

Eliminating capital punishment, which is rarely carried out anyhow, would save the state $125 million a year.
By John Van de Kamp
June 10, 2009

Here's the math.

Today, California has 678 offenders on death row, more than any other state. Yet, in the last 30 years, we've had only 13 executions. With 20 more people sentenced to death each year -- and an average wait of 25 years from sentencing to execution -- the number of inmates on death row is continuing to climb.

Now consider what capital punishment costs. According to the final report of the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice, which I chaired from 2006 to 2008, the cost of a murder trial goes up by about half a million dollars if prosecutors seek the death penalty. Confinement on death row (with all the attendant security requirements) adds $90,000 per inmate per year to the normal cost of incarceration. Appeals and habeas corpus proceedings add tens of thousands more. In all, it costs $125 million a year more to prosecute and defend death penalty cases and to keep inmates on death row than it would simply to put all those people in prison for life without parole.

On top of that $125-million extra cost per year, California is also facing the need to build a new death house for death penalty inmates at an estimated cost of $400 million.

For capital punishment to be an effective deterrent, the sentence must be carried out swiftly, and in public! Not likely to happen.

For capital punishment to be accepeted, its adminstration must be perceived to be inerrant and impartial. Not likely to happen.

So why not save the money?

I spent the remainder of my three hours this afternoon watching THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK on Blu-ray. Sorry to say the Blu-ray transfer isn't exemplary. Having just seen the magnificent THE SEVENTH SEAL, this can't hold a candle to that in terms of qquality. There are some white specks, some minor flashing, some shots where contrast is too milky. It may have always looked that way, but the high def accentuates the lack of consistency.

Sound is a trifle disappointing, too, since only selected sounds get any sense of surround presence. Most of it isn't front-centered; it's center channel-centered a la mono.

There are so many people in this show who shouldn't be in theatre unless they buy a ticket.

One lady in the ensemble decided she didn't want to do the show last night because she was too tired, so she didn't come.

Absolutely unthinkable and completely unforgivable. Fire her ass from the show.

Interesting!  Today is Anne Frank's birthday.  If she were still alive, she'd be 80 years old.

My impressions:  Once the doctor decided to stay in the Hamptons and give this concierge business a try, that should have been the END of the protests from him that he can't do something.  His "I'm-not-really-committed-to-this, I-haven't-made-up-my-mind, you're-not-my-CFO, you're-not-my-P.A." schtick  got old really fast.

This show, for me, is almost certainly an easy "don't see" if things don't improve after the next episode.

I'm totally not into his brother, either.

Then we stopped in Jacques Torres Chocolates - which is just a block away.  There, I got a cookie.  Well, two cookies.  With ice cream in between them.  The Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches are back!

The "bread" is/are JTC's Chocolate Chip Cookies, but since they now serve ice cream in-house, you can choose one of the pre-made ones, or have one custom-made for you.  I chose a pre-made one with Peanut Butter Ice Cream, and my friend, Jonathan, got a custom-made one with JTC's "Wicked" (Spicy) Chocolate Ice Cream.  Again, YUM!!!

And before we walked into JTC, I happened to notice an errant cellphone lying on one of the benches in Verdi Square.  I scanned the contacts, and realized it belonged to an actress - or at least someone in the "biz".  I just recognized too many of the names, and Equity and an agent's office were on the Quick-Dial menu.  In any case...

After some phone calls to her "Mama" and emails, I managed to return to the cellphone to the owner.

...And they lived happily ever after.

Oh...

While I was at Columbus Circle, a young boy came up to me, asking me if I could call his father for him.  He said his father was supposed to pick him up earlier.  He had the number written down on a piece of paper, and I called it.  -I was not going to give him my phone.  I asked the boy what his name was and what his father's name was. His father answered the phone. I told him that his son was waiting for him. He said that he was on his way.  I passed that info onto the boy...  And then he went into the subway.  Hmmm...

*I did do a reverse look-up of a number, and it's linked to some business in New Jersey, so, if "something" happens, at least I know it's trackable to an extent.

Actually, that's what I call the last cookie when I make shortbread cutouts.  There's not enough dough to roll out to cut, so I just smash it free-form and call it the "amoeba."  It's usually eaten by one of my taste-testers (Richard or Rob) while it's still warm.  Once in a great while, when I'm here alone, I get to eat the amoeba myself.

Kristin Scott Thomas to star in 'A Little Night Music'

PARIS (AFP) — British actress Kristin Scott Thomas is to star in the first French production of Stephen Sondheim's hit Broadway musical "A Little Night Music", Paris' Chatelet Theatre said Friday.
The award-winning musical, inspired by the Ingmar Bergman movie "Smiles of a Summer Night", is scheduled to play at the Chatelet from February 15 to 19, 2010.
The 49-year-old actress, who lives in Paris, will play the part of prominent actress Desiree Armfeldt, a role held by Eva Dahlbeck in the Bergman film, Glynis Johns in the 1973 Broadway musical, and Elizabeth Taylor in a 1977 movie based on the musical.

I knew a drag queen in Dayton, OH, in the 1970s. is name was Billy and he went to school with my brother Macbeth. He played the gay club circuit in Dayton with this huge boa constrictor and used to show up at parties escorted by big burly black ex-cons. After I moved to New York, I heard Billy had become a transexual and was now a lesbian.

It should be interesting to see what kinds of stuff they are selling.

Then after there is a fun day at the small strip mall near there. They have free pony rides, balloons, face painting and jumping in those big bouncy things they blow up for kids. For some reason my niece will never go on/in the latter even though i know she'd love it.

An Emergency Room Doctor (good looking bachelor) opts to save a young black patient over attending to a Billionaire hospital beneficiary – and gets fired, and black listed. He joins his (good looking bachelor) brother for a weekend at the Hamptons (super posh NY resort on Long Island) At a posh party the local Medic is screwing up giving emergency care to a guest, and our hero dashes to the rescue. The local Medic is canned and our hero is hired as the “Concierge Doctor”: and he and his brother move into a free beach house. Needless to save all the young lasses throw themselves at the new meat on the beach.

Lots of eye candy for everyone and fun subplots.

Vanilla.

On our cruise we ate at one of the specialty restaurants, you have to pay extra for, and had an incredible Wild Berry and Apple Cobbler (with vanilla ice cream).  Each one was individually baked while we waited.  They weren't as crumbly as most cobblers & they were the best ones we have ever had.

I spent a good 2 1/2 hours with all of the bonus material on THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK. Some of the anecdotes of Millie Perkins get retold two or three times, but I did enjoy the new featurettes, and the Burt Reynolds' narrated "Echoes from the Past" which has been on previous ANNE FRANK discs was really excellent with the true story and the play/movie fictionalization noted.

I'm finally home after a really frustrating and difficult and mutinous rehearsal, most of which had to do with completely redoing the act one blocking - we had a meeting after the rehearsal and everyone aired their points of view and we made some decisions about how the rest of our rehearsals would work.  What I was hoping to do with the staging part of the reading was clearly too ambitious, although had we not had the surprise of the awful set we have to work on, I do think everything would have come together.  But, we do have the set and I'm just going to treat this much more conventionally, reading-wise, with everyone onstage in chairs and people just getting up, doing their scenes without much moving around, and letting the material just play rather than trying to be clever with staging that we have no time to make clean or good.  So, after rehearsal, I went and did a sound check for Jan Abrams, then met Adam and Cason at Jerry's and we went through the entire script, figured out where everyone would be sitting, and then where they'd stand - we were able to keep a lot of what we'd done in terms of the original areas, but all choreography is now out - I should never have tried that - it took six hours of valuable rehearsal time that we could have been spending with the actors getting comfortable with the material rather than worrying about very difficult routines.  We don't have a huge amount of time, but with everything simplified I'm hoping everyone will be much more comfortable and that we won't burden ourselves with a lot of extraneous walking around.  We start at ten tomorrow, and we'll spend the first thirty minutes with the ensemble drilling their music - the next thirty minutes will be for the solos while Adam and I take the ensemble and talk them through where they'll be sitting and how they get from place to place - it should be much simpler for them.  Then we'll start at the top of act one and go over each scene at least three times so they can get used to where and how they're playing.  That's the only thing that's going to get us where we need to be - drilling and getting everyone comfortable.

Good Evening/Morning!

Well... Since one's tendency is to recount one's evening chronologically, I just want to get this out of the way - and out of order - first.  I was almost mugged while walking home earlier tonight - well, about an hour ago.  Some teenage asshole punk walked up to me, tried to grab my iPhone - "Give me that!" - failed, and then proceeded to keep walking away with his friend.

I guess I was stunned for a bit, but I could also tell that the kid hadn't really planned to do that in advance.  I think he just saw someone holding an iPhone, and he decided to see if he could take it away from him.  He didn't really use any real force, he just walked up to me, and tried to grab my hands and iPhone.  And as he walked away - and as we sort of stared each other down - I could hear his friend say to him, "That was stupid!".  So...

I'm OK.  I have my iPhone.  I'm not hurt.

Guess I'm a real New Yorker now.

DR Michael S - Amoeba (http://www.amoeba.com/) only has three locations in California.  One in Berkeley.  One in San Francisco.  And one in Los Angeles/Hollywood.

I'm guessing the Hollywood location would have to be the closest one to Studio City. ;)

It was more upsetting than scary.  Of course, there was the shock of having someone trying to take something out of my hands.  But then there was my own "stupidity"(?) for walking around at 1:00am in the morning with my guard slightly down.  -And I say slightly, since there were a lot(!) of drunk people walking up and down Broadway tonight from 86th street all the way up to 145th.  Lots of post-Yankees v. Mets foot traffic.

Thanks for your concern.  Sleep well.

So...

Twelfth Night was quite wonderful.  Again. It was neat to see it without all the rain and drizzle and mist - it really was a picture-perfect early summer night in the park.  However, I do have to say that the "elements" added a palpable sense of gravity to the proceedings last night.  As the final song goes...

When that I was and a little tine boy,
With hey ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came to man's estate,
with hey ho, the wind and the rain,
'Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gate,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came, alas, to wive,
With hey ho, the wind and the rain,
By swaggering could I never thrive,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came unto my beds,
With hey ho, the wind and the rain,
With toss-pots still had drunken heads,
For the rain it raineth every day.

A great while ago the world begun,
With hey ho, the wind and the rain,
But that's all one, our play is done,
And we'll strive to please you every day.

It's so sluggish and slow of late that I often don't even bother checking in anymore.

Facebook has actually sped back up over the past few days.  I think all the readying for the onslaught of Username registering was slowing down their system. -And, apparently, they did have quite the onslaught - 200,000 names registered in the first 20 minutes (it started at midnight EDT).

And, it looks like Facebook is getting ready for yet another change to their "front page".  Oy!
Title: Re: INSANITY
Post by: JoseSPiano on June 13, 2009, 12:17:09 AM
So...

I decided to take my time leaving The Delacorte tonight.  I just wanted to sit there for a bit and let it continue to sink in - while the majority of the audience stood on the stairs waiting to make their exit.  Then as I was about to leave the park, I noticed two couples standing with maps, so... One wasn't sure where to get out of the park, and one was wondering what good restaurants were near by. :)

Then...

Since it was just such a nice night, I decided to walk home from 81st Street.  I started walking up Central Park West, and I started to hear and recognize a familiar voice coming up behind me.  It turned out it was Raúl Esparza - who plays Orsino - and the show's choreographer, along with another actor/friend, and a great big dog(gie).

Well...

I never worked directly with Raúl during the Sondheim Celebration, but we did share "hall space", and chatted a few times during breaks.  So, I went and re-introduced myself to him.  We chatted about this and that, and he even asked what I thought about the show.  When I told him that I had also seen the show last night, then the choreographer started to listen in...

After a few blocks of chatting and walking, I decided to let them go on their merry way.

It was truly a perfect way to end the evening.

*And that's also why the whole almost-getting-mugged thing really didn't - and doesn't - bother me. :)

Rats!  Apparently I'm missing some software or plug-in or something and cannot get the webcast of the fashion show that Mary Linda's in tonight.  Guess I'll watch Inside Daisy Clover after all.

I don't know why this post made me think of it, but with my new computer, I should be able to watch Netflix movies instantly on my computer!  I could never do that with my old computer (with Windows 2000 and not enough RAM).  I'll have to check tonight when I get home. :D

Well, although my new computer has enough power and download speed, I didn't realize that you had to buy a separate piece of equipment to be able to download Netflix movies to view on your computer. :-\ I won't be buying that separate piece of equipment.

Oh, well.

Well, I now must leave work to help my sister work on her old house (even though it's only about five years old).  She actually has someone coming on Sunday to look at it to see if she (this other someone) would like to rent it.  I need to swap out a bathroom sink and replace the kitchen faucet, then go to my sister's new house and do some more stuff over there.

It'll be a long night. :P

Has the word that Lincoln freed the slaves not yet made its way to Tumwater?

der Brucer

No...at least, my sister never got the word.  Once she gets her old house rented (hopefully, this person coming on Sunday will rent it), and the major stuff gets done at her new house AND I'm through with rehearsals and/or performances of "Romeo & Juliet," THEN I'll have my freedom...but not until then. ::)

;)
