According to IMDb:  MICHAEL CAINE was hot after appearing in THE IPCRESS FILE and SHIRLEY MacLAINE grabbed him for her leading man in GAMBIT. It's a highly entertaining and very clever crime caper and is Caine's first American film....

It's a caper film. :)

DR td re-posted this clip of Dorothy Loudon singing "Fifty Percent" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXUdWPsRjtw) over at Facebook.  It seems that the Tonys have have ongoing sound problems for years.    :-\    But that doesn't detract too much from her fabulous performance.

Anthony went to the Library earlier in the week and took out a few DVDs, one of which, Sabrina, we had never seen. It seems our Library may be trading in the gray market arena. Not that I'm going to turn them in, what with budget cuts and theft and other problems, it's difficult enough to keep the library running. Sabrina came from China. All references to Paramount were gone. There were no extras. All the menus were in Chinese and when you looked closely at the back of the DVD case it said that in very small print. The movie was in English. There was nothing but the movie, no FBI warning, no closing credits, no extras, etc.

THE CAPER FILM

Etymology

The verb to caper means to leap in a frolicsome way and probably derives from capriole, which derives from the Latin for goat (note: Capra (genus)). The noun caper, means a frolicsome leap, a capricious escapade or an illegal or questionable act.

THE CAPER FILM PART 2

Early examples of films which elaborately depict a heist are the three screen versions of the play Alias Jimmy Valentine, the first two made in the silent era (1915 and 1920).

hroughout the 1930's, thievery and scams were present in such films as Raffles, Outside the Law and Ninotchka.
The classical Film noir period of the 1940s and 1950s brought the genre to fame, by focusing more explicitely on the heists themselves, with such films as John Huston's Asphalt Jungle of 1950, Jules Dassin's Rififi of 1955, Jean-Pierre Melville's Bob le flambeur of 1956, or Stanley Kubrick's The Killing, also of 1956.

Even to contemporary Hollywood, the genre still remains promising, as the 2001 and 2003 remakes of Ocean's Eleven and The Italian Job show.

Examples of the variety of directions the heist film can take would include the comedy heist film such as Topkapi, the western heist film such as The War Wagon, the war/heist film such as Kelly's Heroes and numerous spy movies and television programs which had heist-like plots, most notably Mission: Impossible and It Takes a Thief.

CAPER FILMS

Here are some more films I like

The Thomas Crown Affair with Steve McQueen (another film I can watch over and over)
Kelly's Heroes
Usual Suspects
Entrapment
Anderson Tapes
Die Hard
The Italian job (Original)

and a couple of films I am not sure people even know about

The Silent Partner (Christopher Plummer and Elliot Gould)
The Spanish Prisoner  Davis Mamet (Steve Martin)

Are the Pink Panther movies considered caper films? They robberies are usually a small part of the plot. (The get the main story going)

Clearly, with capers like these, any caper flick would also be a budding romance.

My work project today is on the easy side; I'll be rewatching LAST YEAR IN MARIENBAD only this time on Blu-ray. With all the bonus features already viewed (just have to check to see if the resolution is HD or SD), I just have to watch the movie itself again to ascertain the video and audio quality and then tweak the DVD review with these updates.

Good morning, all! I've been awake for some  puttering about the apartment. I had my oatmeal and coffee, I played at tge computer, and I listened to the new Ohio Light Opera recording of THE CABARET GIRL; I wish they were better. Listening to John McGlinn's Library of Congress concert of THE CITY CHAP with a solid orchestra and good Broadway singers, like George Dvorsky, Judy Kaye, and Jeanne Lehman, and then hearing the Ohio Light Opera is like going from heaven to hell: scrappy orchestra, too many student singers with little personality and worse acting chops.

Today, NYPL and my gospel chart.

I'm having a volatile and amusing correspondence (via eBay) with an idiot seller who's listing a first edition, first printing of Exodus.  He's got photos of the jacket and the copyright page - no price on the jacket and no statement of first edition in his photos, hence he is selling a book club edition, which is worth about ten cents rather than the sixty bucks he's trying to rook someone out of.  I wrote him and told him, and he sent me an offensive response.  I then wrote him back and told him I was reporting his fraudulent and now willfully wrong listing to eBay, which I then did.  I have a copy of the first edition and I gave him all the points.  Then he wrote me an even more offensive response, told me I was a coward for hiding behind e-mail (oh, will he find out how incorrect THAT is), and then said if I had anything further to say I should call him on his cell - and then gave me that number.  :)  If it's real, he will be getting a call later this afternoon and it shall be ever so much fun.

From a book I'm reading:

Quote
While at the University of California, Santa Barbara, James Welch was asked to demonstrate the Flentrop pipe organ for a big music appreciation class.  Welch: "I played some Bach for them, and when I started, a young woman behind me said, quite audibly, "Look! He's playing music by hand!"  I guess it had never occurred to her that music could come out of anything other than loud-speakers, and was produced somehow mysteriously."

I guess it is true.  A few weeks ago, on Pentecost Sunday, the other three male section leaders and I sang the plainsong chant "Veni Creator Spiritus" from the balcony, unaccompanied, behind the congregation.  Apparently someone asked one of the ushers if it was a recording.     :-\

I must now get myself to work.  I need to make up a few hours (as usual).  Tonight, we're having a cue-to-cue tech rehearsal.  Hopefully, we'll most likely be able to skip all the long speeches and go through the show quickly. ;)

Have a good day, all!

BK, I mentioned SAAWARIYA a long time ago, and if you want a quick laugh, play the BD with the various soundtrack and subtitles options.  One of them is a lady reading the English subtitles.  Very strange.

I am so sick of this lousy weather! I did my walk. went to NYPL and the pharmacy, then waited 25 minutes for a bus, which is pathetic. Of course, when it arrived, it was packed, with a lot of parents and free-riding kids in seats while us old coots who have to pay for the ride stand. Fuckem.

Back from various and sundried errands.  I listened to the new West Side Story album - terrible.  Everything I hate about poor recording and mixing - voices too low, too dry, too ugly-sounding - orchestra sounding like they're in one space while the voices sound like they're down the hall in a tiny dead room.  So, I took out the B'way cast album and though it was recorded in the late 1950s it blows the new one out of the water in every possible way - probably because the original had a real producer, Goddard Lieberson, and not a poseur calling himself a producer.   Horrible.  Dialogue spoken as if they were doing an intimate radio drama - you can barely hear it - you can barely hear the finger snaps in the Prologue - HELLO - this is WEST SIDE STORY.

I've been feeling better as the day goes on. We will continue watching another episode or two of The Forstye Saga. We watched one episode last night but I had to stop after one because I was too tired to watch for another hour. I feel as if I can get through at least two episodes tonight after dinner.

Ginny, regarding library budget cutbacks, when we were at the NY Public Library last week during Anthony's birthday we ran into the new Internet situation. It used to be if a terminal was open you could log in  and stay as long as no one needed it. Now you need a library card and you must enter your number along with a pin and you are limited to 45 minutes for the entire day!. The librarian said people were coming in (especially homeless people and kids) and monopolizing the terminals. They started the log in and they may cut out free internet completely to save money. It's sad!

Wow, DR Ben, those ARE stringent Internet policies!  Unfortunately, Ohio has always been the envy of the other 49 states when it comes to public library funding.  That seems to be in dire peril right now - I'm so glad I retired!

We just had a momentary power outage. It's so hot here I'm guessing circuits got overloaded with lots of people running air conditioners for the first time this year.

Good Afternoon!

I'm back from City Center.

DR FJL - Thank you, once again, for your generosity. I was glad I got to see this production. Yes, the show is - and always has been - a "hot mess", and, yes, the years have not been kind to it.  However, there were some great performances and performers, and it was especially heartwarming to see so many families in the audience... With children who behaved during the show!

*During intermission, I happened to be standing next to a father and his four- or five-year old son.  His father liked the show, and his son was making sure he finished his snack and drink fast enough so that he wouldn't miss the start of the second act! :)

Because I really enjoyed revisiting the first two seasons of LOST on Blu-ray when I reviewed them, I thought I'd like to continue with the story, so while lunch was cooking, since it was way too hot to sit on the porch, I put in Season 3 on Blu-ray and begin with the frist episode.

What a GREAt series this is! And that first episode of season three, which is the first time we've seen the Hydra Station, is so fabulous. I'm going to enjoy going back through this third season.

Another friend had an extra ticket to Archbishop Supreme Tartuffe (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/130156-Archbishop_Supreme_Tartuffe_with_De_Shields_Begins_Off-Broadway_Run_June_12) which stars André de Shields, and features "Isaac" himself from "The Loveboat", Ted Lange.  Looks like quite an interesting premise for a "play with music".

I kept thinking that this would be the first episode I'd get through without it making me cry (it was about a sniper picking off law enforcement officers), and darn if I did have tears rolling down my cheeks by the time it was over. (One of the regulars got shot, and her boy friend, also on the team, was very upset about it.)

One of the movies that was playing on cable when I finished FLASHPOINT was LIFE AFTER TOMORROW, the documentary about the girls who had played Annie or an orphan in the original show or national tours. So, I watched it this afternoon. Some funny, sad, and moving stories from those now grown up ladies about life on the road or on Broadway as young celebrities.

I was wrong.

When I am, I say it.

Tonight I watched HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL - the original - and it was an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.  Zac Efron was very good, the songs were bouncy, and the story was interesting.  I also liked the adults.  Lots of cliches on view....but then again....most of us ARE cliches.

I still have NO desire to see the stage version, but the liked the characters enough to watch HSM2 and HSM3 when they show up on my TV screen.

I think DR MATTH had some nice things to say about the show....and MR BK and possibly DR JMK also had good words for it, so I am glad I broke down a watched it.

I was wrong....it was NOT what I thought it was or would be.

I began by rewatching LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD, this time on Blu-ray. Of course, it's another mostly exquisite Criterion black and white high definition release. Some stunning imagery.

At one point, though, my eyes began to get a little heavy, and I had to stop it for a about 15 minutes to take a little nap.

Next I watched one of the movies I had on the DVR - A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH. I had never seen this all the way through, and I loved about 98% of it. Some of Raymond Massey's pontificating during the trial was a trial itself to sit through. Otherwise, it was an ingenious romantic fantasy.

Good Evening!

I'm back from seeing Archbishop Supreme Tartuffe.  I think the only comments and observations I shall make about it are:

-I don't think bk would like this "play with music".
-I'm pretty sure DR FJL would like this "play with music".
-If DR Ginny and her DH Richard had been sitting in the front row, both of them probably would have been chosen to be "saved". And possibly nuzzled by Mr. de Shields.
-The running time listed in the program was "1 hour and 30 minutes with no intermission".  We left the theatre at 9:50.
-Andre de Shields is a brave, and, well, fearless actor. And I'm guessing he really does feel comfortable on stage in front of an audience wearing next to nothing.
-I'm wondering if it's "legal" to pick someone out of the audience, and then pull them on stage with you... Then pull them down on to the stage with you... While you're wearing a pair of "fashionable" briefs.

'Nuff said for now.

In other news...

It was great seeing my friend, Shawn, again.  He's treating himself to a two-week vacation in Europe in July - it's his 40th birthday gift to himself.  He works for a company that books a lot of business with the Orient Express properties, and he was able to call in some favors.  He's not getting the trip for free, but he did manage to work out a wonderful itinerary at quite a good rate. Color me jealous.

*And he wasn't exactly sure what to make of the show either.  ;)

I'm finished with my evening internet surf, so I'm heading downstairs to bed.

Good night!

We ended up having a pre-show dinner at Metro Marché in the Port Authority Bus Terminal.  It really is a semi-hidden gem - basically a true diamond in the rough that is the Port Authority. I had a very fresh mesclun salad and their sirloin burger, and Shawn had their special vegetable soup with pesto, and their penne entrée.  I probably would have sampled a glass of something from their well assembled wine list, but I didn't want to spend the first part of the show fighting the "drowsies".  *Although, I ended up with a case of the "drowsies" anyway. :-] ;)

RIFF - Christopher Walken  ;D

And never once did he yell MORE COW BELL!!   ;D

Not much of a mystery if you go to one particular web site.  They seem to think it is all pretty cut and dried.  It is amazing that things can be said on the internet about people who are still living, without any solid evidence to back it up.

What? ???

DR JRand - Did you watch "HSM" on the Tee-Vee or on the DeeVeeDee? If you watched it on the TeeVee...

I'm wondering if Disney adjusted the music credits (during the credits) to reflect which songs Drew Seeley sang for - dubbed for - Zac Efron.  *Drew Seeley just started his summer stint at Prince Eric in Disney's The Little Mermaid.  He's apparently a very nice prince. ;)

Finished going through all the stuff at my dad's.  The only piece of memorabilia I found was a match book size sewing kit from the hotel in China, from Tai Pan.   Absolutely nothing else unless I find something in the boxes of paper work I have to go through in the next few months.  I'm sad he never kept anything.

Well I better go, need to look for photos to make a small remembrance booklet to have ready at the dinner his work wants to sponsor.

I think I might only find 20 or so black and white photos from Germany, and maybe only a few more from here and that's it.

I'm so glad I took the 8,000 or so photos of my kid and husband during the years I terrorized them both by insisting on family outings every weekend.  They dreaded them, but I have photos. ;D ;D ;D

Thank you for the vibes for my sister. She should be feeling better in about a week. Then she will enjoy the rest of the summer.

DR Laura - Are you planning any more visits to visit your sister?

Oh... And some sad news from the Regional Theatre-Dinner Theatre circuit..

Crown Uptown (http://www.crownuptown.com/) in Wichita, KS, will be closing down after tomorrow's matinee.  It really has been a rough week for arts organization.  North Shore is also ceasing operations this week, and two major companies have eliminated their Artistic Director positions.  :-\

At this time I don't have plans to go out. Maybe when she's all over it. Twice now, when I've gone to visit her, we've driven down to NYC.

DR Ginny - Have you seen this:  *DR George and other DRs should also find this interesting and encouraging.

A Literary Legend Fights for a Local Library (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/20/us/20ventura.html?_r=1&hpw)

“Libraries raised me,” Mr. [Ray] Bradbury said. “I don’t believe in colleges and universities. I believe in libraries because most students don’t have any money. When I graduated from high school, it was during the Depression and we had no money. I couldn’t go to college, so I went to the library three days a week for 10 years.”
