Title: SHOWMANSHIP
Post by: bk on July 27, 2009, 12:10:19 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had showmanship, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they want some showmanship before they come home, so let's give it to them.

In-e-luct-able....that's what you are.....
Ineluctable, though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more

Ineluctable in every way
And forever more, thats how youll stay
Thats why, darling, its incredible
That someone so tax-deductible
Thinks that I am ineluctable, too

Read the notes.

I'll be playing auditions for a theatre company in Lancaster.  I've worked for them before whenever they've come into The City, and they're in the process of having their "on campus" auditions, and had asked if I would be interested in coming out to Lancaster for the day to play for them.  Sure. Why not?  So, a-Lancaster-ing I shall go.  -And then a Philly-ing I shall go too later on.

Here is the list of my favorite Holmes films. Not Necessarily the best ever made

FAV
Murder By Decree Christopher Plummer as Holmes

The Hounds of the Baskerville Peter Cushing as Holmes

The 7% Solution Nicole Williamson as Holmes

HATE
Now I have not seen DR Pogue version of the story (with Ian Richardson) but these are two of the worst films I've seen

The Hounds of the Baskerville TV version with William Shatner in some role. Bernard Fox did make a good Watson

The Hounds of the Bakerville Peter Cook as Holmes. Although I later read that the film was re-edited for the NA release. With scenes dropped and others rearrange. The film made no sense and wasn't funny

Young Sherlock Holmes Too Indiana Jones like and situations for a Young Holmes let alone an old Holmes made the story unbelievable.

OFFSHOOT
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter a comedy with Gene Wilder

The Holmes I would like to see:

Peter O'Toole
Christopher Lee

Good Morning, once again!

Well, I made it down to Penn Station about ten minutes before my train was scheduled to leave. I would have liked to have gotten there a little earlier, but it just took me a little while longer to get ready this morning than I thought it would. -I think this was the first time since getting back from the Phillipines that I had to be up before 8:00am. But I made it.

And right now, I'm somewhere in New Jersey. Thankfully, the train is not all crowded this morning. However, there's no Quiet Car nor a Cafe Car on this train.  At least I packed some granola bars in my bag. -Oh, I never did get a chance to make breakfast before I left the apartment this morning.

As the author of BASIL RATHBONE: His Life and His Films, I can attest that there is only one real Sherlock Holmes, and that was Basil.

The best of those 14 pictures he did: THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and THE SCARLET CLAW.

BK,

I totally agree with you about the sorry state of movie theaters.  I very seldom go to a theater any more.  Haven't been to one yet this year.  [One thing you didn't mention is that admission prices are outrageous...even for seniors like us.]

I don't mind waiting 2-3 months for any film I want to see to come out on DVD.  That way, I can watch it when I want on my 52" flat screen w/surround sound.  No distractions.

As a writer of Sherlock Holmes films (two very good ones with Ian Richardson and one very good script that became an awful movie with Edward Woodward) and one Sherlock Holmes play, I have read the entire Holmes Canon (as well as a great bunch of other Conan Doyle, who wrote many fine things besides Sherlock...I'm fond of the Brigadier Gerard stories), my favourite stories would be the two I adpated, SIGN OF FOUR and HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.  I also enjoy the VALLEY OF FEAR, even though the second part of the novel doesn't deal with Holmes at all.  But the first half has great detection in it.  THE SECOND STAIN, THE COOPER BEECHES, THOR BRIDGE, THE DEVIL'S FOOT, THE CREEPING MAN, THE MAN WITH THE TWISTED LIP...all have their charms.

As far as the films go, Basil was wonderful...his best being THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES which was done in the proper period.  Owning and having read Mr. Druxman's wonderful book and having lived very near Mr. Rathbone's house on Los Feliz Boulevard, I must reluctantly say I felt Mr. Brett was the quintessential Holmes...before he got sick and the series trailed off at the end.  But he was not afraid to make Holmes thoroughly dislikeable and disagreeable at times...which he was.  It was a very daring and dangerous protrayal.

But my favourite movie would have to be my own HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES...solely because the filming of it was one of the happiest most exciting periods of my life.  And it is still the most faithful of all the films made from my scripts...and the only one I return to again and again to watch.  Ian Richardson is a more-user friendly Holmes than Brett and seems to capture the Holmes of the later stories, where Holmes was more humourous.

Having also acted in THE CRUCIFER OF BLOOD onstage with Charlton Heston as Holmes and Jeremy Brett as Watson, I can tell you Brett was just as wonderful a Watson as he was a Holmes.  He said to me at the time, "In England, I get all these Weight of the Empire roles, so it's nice to come over here and play Winnie-the-Pooh...which is exactly how I'm playing Watson. " At the time, he also confided very specific ideas about how Holmes should be played...ideas that he later incorporated into his own portrayal.

I'm also very fond of my Holmes play, THE EBONY APE.

Good morning, all! Today I once again successfully bathed myself, in spite of the pain amnd aggravation, and I am ready to face a day of Life Begins at 8:40 edits.  I slept well last night; I was up around 4 this morning to take another dose of vicodin and muscle relaxant. Around 9:10 am my leg start3d throbbing and I decided to get up and begin the day.

Curiously, there was a huge puddle of water under my bathroom sink this morning. I'm wondering if I have a leaking toilet, although I see no signs of it, just these sudden pools of water. I cannot blame the ghosts for this and I'm puzzled.

TOD:
I own two of DR Charles Pogue's Sherlock Holmes movies, THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and SIGN OF THE FOUR, as well as several other versions of the Holmes mysteries.
Two of my favorite Holmes films are the two Jack the Ripper storylines, A STUDY IN TERROR, with the late great Robert Morley as Holmes' brother, and A STUDY IN TERROR, based on the royal conspiracy plot pushed by Stephen Knight in his JACK THE RIPPER: THE FINAL SOLUTION. This theory was later debunked until Patricia Cornwell suddenly announced she had solved the killings and plagiarized Knight's theories.

I've pretty much always enjoyed the Basil Rathbone series of films.  Even the hokey ones that had Holmes dealing with Nazi spies during WWII were still fun.

I also like THE SEVEN AND A HALF PERCENT SOLUTION, THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS.  I was rather disappointed by Caleb Carr's recent take on Sherlock Holmes, though...

Last night, it was 94° up in my bedroom at about 11:00 pm! :P When I finally went to bed (at about 1:30 am ::)), it was about 92°.  Not much cooler.  So, I finally got some blankets and slept downstairs on my sleeper-sofa that my parents bought me last year.  It was about 87° down there...even cooler, but still warm.

Anyway, it was one of the worst nights of sleep I've had in a long time!  The sleeper-sofa looks nice, but it was just SO uncomfortable. :-\ And I have two ticking clocks in my living room, which are very loud when there is absolutely no other noise.  I don't think I got more than a couple of hours of sleep all night.  I'd rather deal with the heat and sleep upstairs from now on.

Some TV station showed the Basil Rathbone series when I was about 12 or so, and I loved listening to the banter.  The mysteries were always secondary to the characters.  At any rate, I loved them when I was about that age.  They got replaced as a favorite when the same TV station ran the Andy Hardy series.

They were supposed to install it when my roof was re-roofed, but it wasn't.  Then, it was supposed to be installed when the next building was re-roofed (so the installers only have to make one trip).  That was supposed to be last week, but the next building wasn't re-roofed.  I don't know why.  Now, I have no idea when the next roof will be done, meaning, I have no idea (still) when my new operable skylight will be installed.  And this week, it's going to be the hottest that it's been in a LONG time.

I think by making it a public vote that they guaranteed that the winner would win. Apparently the public viewed the runner up as a bitch. So even if her collection had been amazing, i suspect she would not have won. I was not happy that the judges picked the runner up as their winner. I also did not care for her final collection at all. I can't believe that the winner got 56% of the vote though. That is crazy. I wonder if people just liked her better, or found her final collection more accessible. To me i was pretty sure she would win. I never really cared for her that much during the season. But i really liked her final collection and would wear a lot of those pieces. I wonder if the judges were mad she won. They thought her collection was not cohesive.  It was clear though that james paul was the most talented innovative designer. So i had hoped the judges would have given him their prize. But i guess not! :(

My bedroom is actually a loft area above the "official" master bedroom (which I'm actually using as my TV/computer room) of my three-story townhouse condo.  The closest place that I could put an air conditioner is on the second floor (in my TV/computer room) but that won't help my bedroom, upstairs.  There is no openable window up in the loft, just the (now) un-openable skylight that I want changed to a new operable skylight, so that I can let out the hot air.

When I was a kid I the Universal Basil Rathbone SHERLOCK HOLMES films aired regularly. Till date, those are the only versions I have seen, and I enjoyed them all very much. My favorite, as I recall, was THE PEARL OF DEATH.

I never did see HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, but there is a Bollywood movie "based" on that story. BEES SAAL BAAD is the title, and it is one of my all time favorite films. Even though it was made in 1962 it has the look and feeling of an old 1930s or 40s horror film.

Bruce, I too would like to see movie theatres restored to their former glory, but there are economic factors as well. People just aren't going to the movies much anymore, which has hurt revenue. There's a theatre in Virginia--Jose will know it--an arthouse place, that really tried to do things right, but they are struggling. From what they used to say in their email newsletter, the distributors often make some pretty poor decisions as to which theatres can show which films. The distributors, of course, are trying to maximize their profits, without much regard to others. Personally, I am really put off by the high prices, which IMO just means that even fewer people attend. And then there's the issue of the quality of the films. It's a mess!

I'm sure that others here have more insight into this than I do. Other viewpoints?
Title: Re: SHOWMANSHIP
Post by: JMK on July 27, 2009, 09:18:48 AM
We hardly ever go to movies, except if there's a "big" kids' film out.  Betsy will probably take the boys to Harry Potter this week, but it's probably just as much to be in a nice air conditioned environment, LOL, than it is to see the film.  I have the same price issue you do, Jeanne--why pay $30-40 to take my family (not including food), when a few months (or even weeks) later, I can buy the DVD or BD for less and enjoy the film in the comfort of my own home without the rude people sitting around me.

Plan on a few interesting years at your house, JMK.

He actually seems to have attained a fair degree of emotional equilibrium recently after a very rocky last year.  So we're hoping the first massive hormone influx is over and we have a moment or two of relative peace.  I can dream, can't I?

Gabe did say this morning he wants to be a "good teen," that he can't stand the reputation that teens in general have and he doesn't want to be "like those teens."  We shall see.  As long as he inherited Betsy's gene pool, we'll be fine.  If he follows in his father's footsteps, you'll find me in a fetal position under my piano.  :)

First of all, Happy Birthday to Gabe!

DR JMK, my husband was teaching pre-teens and early teens (gifted math & science) at the time our son became a teenager.  Whenever our son did something that made me roll my eyes, Richard always said, "Girls are worse."  Just keep that in mind and have fun!

My son was abducted by aliens when he started high school at 14 and switched with an alien. It looked like my son, but it sure didn't act like my sweet boy. It was quite rocky for several years. For some reason, the aliens switched them again after he had lived on his own for a couple of years. I don't know why they wanted that alien kid back.

The showing at the Chinese was a regular screening - I just wanted to go to the Chinese again.  The Chinese is a showplace and one of the great movie theaters.  It's "Hollywood."  So, like the El Capitan, it should be used as a reminder of how great the moviegoing experience should be.  But instead the crass cretins at Mann Theaters take the easy way and show the ads and cover up the original projection booths and show dim digital projection and shame on them.  The projection at the El Capitan is superb, whether it's digital or film, because it's bright and sharp.  And there are curtains, and you don't see the screen when you enter, and it's nice.  They give you a show, which they should for all the bloody money they charge now.  It was twelve bucks to see the Harry Potter movie at a matinee.

For me, DR Jeanne:  yes, the physical conditions at the cinema are definitely in decline.  And that is sad.  But what really keeps me from viewing movies in public is the more rapidly deteriorating behavior of my fellow public.  To me, it's just not worth it any more.

My sister just sent this one:

What American accent do you have? (http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have)

To read people's tweets, does that come to you via email or on your phone? Or do you log into Twitter and then read all the various and sundried tweets?

DR MBarnum - there are various methods to read the Tweets [posts].  You can do it on your computer, either through the Twitter website or through various "clients," just as you view your email through a client.  And/or you can choose to receive the Tweets on your phone - or just the Tweets of certain people whom you select.  Just as you can also send Tweets from your phone.  I have it set up that only Direct Messages - private messages sent just to me - come through my email.

I'm suspicious of the results. I've been in New York for 29 years and even before that I was never asked if I was from Minnesota (or Wisconsin which they say in the test results). I've heard Minnesota speak my entire life and Minnesotans would answer those questions much differently than I did. I worked very hard to neutralize any accent I might have had and I don't think, based on my answers, that I sound Midwestern (or Inland North) at all. This is not to disparage people from the Midwest who have a noticeable accent, I just don't feel I do and I don't think the test is terribly accurate.

Also, I haven't called carbonated drinks "pop" since I was about 11 years old. If I drink something like that it's "soda". Ask my 4 sisters and 2 brothers. When I visit them and they offer me "pop" I say "No thanks, do you have any soda?"  :D

I'm such a good older brother.

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

I was born in Alabama, but lived in Georgia, California, Texas, Germany, Colorado and  Washington by the time I was 10.  I've lived here ever since. :)

I have seen four movies in a theater in the last sixteen years.  I don't enjoy the rudeness of the other patrons (oldsters are just as rude as youngsters), I don't enjoy the prices, and when the lights go out it is one of the times that my agoraphobia takes hold.  It also takes place at live theater productions, but not as severely as in movie theaters.

I am glad I checked my spelling, I first wrote agraphobia (fear of sexual abuse), which would probably be a different type of movie theater.

I enjoy going to the movies every now and then and I rarely have come across rude patrons, thankfully. I usually will go to a matinee, however, and as DanTheMan mentioned, maybe certain times or days are worse then others.

The prices are steep, I admit, so it has to be a particularly special film for me to go out to see it. I really do enjoy seeing a comedy in a theater full of people.

I have always loved the Basil Rathbone SHERLOCK HOLMES films, maybe because I grew up watching them.  My favorites are probably THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE VOICE OF TERROR,  and THE SCARLET CLAW.  When I was younger, it never occurred to me that the Nazis that Rathbone fought in the VOICE OF TERROR were from a different era.  I just loved the characters and the mysteries.

I also appeared in the play THE CRUCIFER OF BLOOD, but neither Mr. Heston, nor Mr. Pogue was in my production.  But as I have stated before, my college roommate was in the original Broadway cast of the show.  It really stunned me when I opened my script for the first time and found Martin's name listed in the cast.

I have shared this little tidbit before, but I learned to read and write via phonics, which led to an unintentionally hilarious misstep when I was in First Grade.  We had a little newspaper where we all wrote little articles, and I devoted one article to my father's exploits as a soldier.  Except I spelled "war" as "whore" (what would the pronunication site make of that I wonder?).  So my article stated my father had been in the whore and my mother hoped he was never in another whore again.

Good Morning.  I need to go take Sugar for a walk before it hits 90 outside.  Be back in a bit.
I left too late this morning & ended up keeping Sherlock in the shade, walking back & forth along the creek.  He was very happy, I didn't get enough exercise.

The washing instructions on the label of the T-shirt I am wearing:

"Take off shirt.  Machine wash warm with like colors.  Tumble dry (in a dryer).  Do not bleach, dry clean, or pound on rocks.  If you insist upon ironing-- be careful.  Do not remove tag-- something bad might happen."

So my article stated my father had been in the whore and my mother hoped he was never in another whore again.

;)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DS GABE!

I'm on my way back to NYC. The auditions went well, and the theatre complex was/is HUGE! We ended up having a pretty full day, so there was no time to make a break for some Shoo-Fly Pie. However, I did pick up some peanut butter cookies and chocolate-covered marshmallows. Hopefully, there will be time for some pie next Monday.

Jose, good thing he found out BEFORE you stopped by.  I hope your friend has a quick recovery.

He's actually over the worst of it, apparently, since the worst of it hit yesterday. He thought it was "something he ate", but woke up today quite fatigued. He was already scheduled for a routine check-up this morning - which is also why he didn't bother going in over the weekend. So... He just needs a good night's rest tonight. He's a bit of a health and fitness nut, so the effects and duration of the flu were on the "short" side.

I wonder if DR td is contending with this (http://usedbooksblog.com/blog/borders-non-blogging-contract/)??

Well. . .I've taken to not calling Borders by name anytime I post on the net about work happenings. . .
When I was hired, we were told we weren't allowed to post anything online about Borders' policies, but about six weeks ago we did have to sign a document stating the same thing.
Personally, I think it's a free speech violation to not speak about how one's work day was.  I would never go into detail about company policy, but I would speak out about stupid customers - like the ones who ask if all the coffee beverages have coffee in them,  but as I said on another board (The Scarlet Street Forums), it's very interesting to watch a company do everything in its power to commit commercial suicide and to stand on the sidelines watching it crash and burn.

We visited ICU during the last evening visiting period.  Only John's wife and youngest daughter and her boyfriend were there and only Richard went in to see John.  They're having visitors put on gowns and gloves while they rule out his having something infectious, so I stayed in the waiting room with the family.  No change in John's condition, except that his blood pressure has stabilized - which was the desired effect of putting him back on the vent.

:P I say.

Well...as I drove to work this morning (after posting the message above), I saw that another building in my condo complex was being re-roofed!!  When I got to work, I called the property manager and left a message asking if this means that I'll be getting my new operable skylight.  She called me back a little later and said that the roofers (who are supposed to install my new operable skylight) will contact me.  When I came home this afternoon, there was a business card with a note asking me to call the roofers.  I spoke to the guy and he said that my new operable skylight will be installed tomorrow (Tuesday) morning!!  AT 8:00 AM!  That's just when I normally wake up. :-\ But I don't care.  I want that darned new operable skylight put in!  So, I'm finally getting my new operable skylight!! ;D :D ;D :D ;D

Almost exactly two years ago, I posted that it was very hot up in my bedroom.  On July 12, 2007, 12:01:52 AM (at the end of the day for the topic UP IN ARMS), I wrote:

Quote
When I came home this evening (at about 10:30 pm), the temperature up in my bedroom was 93 degrees!! :o AND it's at the top of my 3-story town house condo, AND there's no open-able window up at the top! :P The heat just goes up there and stays.  I have a couple of fans blowing air around but it still can't actually cool the air. :-\

The next day of posts (also July 12, 2007, 11:06:45 PM, but the topic was WAXING AND WANING), I posted that I wanted to change my skylight from one that doesn't open to one that does:

Quote
I am really thinking about getting a portable air conditioner...or seeing if I can be allowed to make my skylight in my loft bedroom an openable skylight.  All of the condos in this complex have the exact same kind of skylights, except some are square and some are half-sized rectangles.  When I was looking at places to buy, one of the other units in this complex had a square skylight (like mine) that could crank open!  I hope that that's a possibility because otherwise, there really isn't any easy way to get rid of the hot air up there :P

Title: Re: SHOWMANSHIP
Post by: George on July 27, 2009, 10:10:55 PM
On July 14, 2007 (topic, PETULANT), Jeanne posted some hints (I saved them in a word document, which is how I remembered all of this):

Quote
On the subject of skylights, I differ. My present home has three skylights, two of them being the operable sort. A previous abode had an inoperable skylight, which always leaked. I concluded from that experience that skylights always leak. Not so. When I bought this house one of the skylights leaked. I learned that the two operable ones had been installed incorrectly--the remodeler had ignored the (clearly stated) manufacturer's instructions and had NOT provided the proper pitch. I had a contractor do so and caulk them adequately, and VIOLA! no leaks.

It can be difficult to retrofit this, however, because the junction of the skylight and the roof is important. GEORGE, I would contact the manufacturer of your existing skylight and ask if they make any operable ones the same size as your existing one, and also how difficult he thinks it would be to make the change.

BTW, my skylights were made by Andersen Windows, and even though the installation error was clearly not Andersen's fault, they gave me new sashes (the portion of the skylight which contains the glass) free of charge. I had to pay my contractor to do the modification, however. So I must say that Andersen went the extra mile and then some.

BTW #2, I couldn't LIVE in this house without those two operable skylights! The extra ventilation makes a huge difference.

BTW#3: some models have a screen to keep out the flying insects.

Title: Re: SHOWMANSHIP

The new skylight IS supposed to have a screen. :)

Title: Re: SHOWMANSHIP
Post by: George on July 27, 2009, 10:12:09 PM
IT'S BEEN TWO YEARS, BUT IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING!!  And since the roofers (who just put a new roof on my building) are ordering and installing all the skylights for the condo complex (if the owners want new ones), the workmanship will be covered under their warranty! ;D
Title: Re: SHOWMANSHIP
Post by: George on July 27, 2009, 10:24:23 PM
Well, since I got very little sleep last night, I'm going to go to bed now, in the hopes that I'll get some sleep.  I'm going to bring the foam mattress from my bedroom upstairs down to the sleeper-sofa (I should've done that last night, but I didn't think that the sleeper-sofa would be SO uncomfortable) and take the batteries out of the two clocks, so that there is silence.  And if I'm able to get to sleep earlier than usual, it won't be so bad when the roofers come early tomorrow to install the new skylight.  I'll make sure that I get up earlier than they're supposed to be here, so that I can make myself presentable. ;)

Good night, all!

The rabbit ears did not work.  I guess I'm stuck buying a new tv.  The smallest one is still $200.00.  Will have to wait.

I made this big stink in my building about the smell, and then of course everyone stopped talking to me.  And now I just found out my manager was arrested a couple of days ago.  (for something completely different I think).

I'm curious to see what happens.  Maybe I'll stay if things change for the better (if the management company pays more attention to the building out of quilt it would help).
