Well, you've read the notes, the notes had items and novelty, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to find some fake vomit to amuse their family and friends.
-
And the word of the day is: POCOCURANTE!
-
And to start the topics - what were your favorite novelty items or toys from your childhood? Did you ever send away for them, or did you find them at the five and dime?

Once again I will like thank DR Jose for all his help regarding the MAC. I did use google, but didn't know about Ask Google. It took a while, but I found the right program and the right information so that I can use IMOVIE. Now I have to learn how to edit and looking forward to it.

Good morning, all! I am supposed to have brunch with my DC freind, Darrel Karl, this morning, but I considering canceling it. Last night was not a good night. I dobt that I slept more than a couple of hours. I ran out of the industrial strength Ibuprofen yesterday morning, and I'm trying to wean myself off all of the meds and, at the same time, trying to return to a semblance of my usual life. I went to bed at 10, couldn't sleep, and took the muscle relaxer and Vicodin around 12:30. I should have taken a Tylenol PM earlier because, around 3 am I waas still awake. My next memory is that it was close to 5 am because I could see the sky getting lighter. Then it 7:30, and I stayed in bed until 8:30 or so. I have a long day on crutches, or crutch if I only take one, and the brunch is my one non-requisite, much as I want to spend time with a good friend, and I may cancel. Otherwise, it will mean standing on a crutch at one of the local restaurants waiting for a table. Oy!
Color me crabby.
-
DR Ginny, I'm sorry to hear about John's current state. How are Richard and David handling it?
-
BK, I"m enjoying reading about your LOST trek.
It's too bad that it's been so long for me since i've watched these shows (more than 2 years since the season 3 finale). So i mostly cannot remember what happened when. But i did go back just now to the televisionwithoutpity recaps to see what the season 3 ending was all about. Yep that was a great one. So sad! So confusing!
-
Sunday.
-
DR JANE is home.
Sorry to hear DR GINNY's news, but continued hope and prayers are on the way.
-
Well last night's audience was VERY quiet and unresponsive. The first big musical number finished with NO "huge gaps" as were present at some other show I heard about. Don Quixote and Sancho finished singing "I Don Quixote" - the horse and the burro stopped dancing. The actors said "Whoa!"...the pit stopped playing.....and the audience....just.....sat....there.....
It was a long evening. Hopefully today's matinee will be more lively audience wise.
-
DR JMK do you remember Herb Alpert on The Hollywood Palace in December 1967 with Brasilai '66 and Liza Minnelli?

DR JRand58, what an appalling story! I would love to think they were so stunned by the imaginative approach that they were dumbfounded. I hope their lack of response didn't throw off the cast too much.

Good morning!
Another hot day here: temps in the mid-90s. Looks like all of August is going to be like this, and no rain in the forecast at all until Wednesday when there's a 30% chance.
-
I was up this morning and out mowing my front yard at 7 a.m. I had to get it done since parts of the yard were very overgrown (other parts hadn't grown much at all despite the rain). Glad to have that behind me. There was some aching and pain, but not too bad.
-
The LOST episode that contaned both a flashback and flashforward (Sun-Jin episode) was one of the greatest of the series. It was a HUGE surprise to me when that was revealed.
-
I will continue with the DEXTER episodes today. I won't be able to finish them this afternoon. If I'm lucky, I can get four done, so will have to finish it up and do the BD-Live supplements this evening.
-
I plan to watch PSYCH while I eat lunch, and tonight before I watch my show, I'll continue watching VERTIGO which I started rewatching yesterday.

Note to Cillaliz:
About 7 years ago I had a fairly nasty gall bladder attack (I was driving and had to pull off to the shoulder to curl up in pain and vomit on the ground). The Dr. sent me for an ultrasound which confirmed gall stones. I then went to a Surgeon who set me up to have my gall bladder removed. I was led to believe it would be laparoscopic outpatient surgery. The pre-op briefing from the Dr. suggested that, at my age, "outpatient" was a "maybe" and that after they had me on the table they may decide to do a full dice and slice and keep me in the hospital for a few days.
I never scheduled the surgery.
I have had no problems since.

I didn't throw a shoe, but I hurled many verbal epithets at him. I can't STAND his character.

Page Two Dance!!!

I didn't like NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN either, and it broke my heart becuase Sean COnnery will always be James Bond to me, but this was a wretched, tired, dull adventure for Bond, and he and Kim Basinger had no chemistry at all.
-
Now, I'm going to head downstairs and get a head start on viewing.

DR JMK do you remember Herb Alpert on The Hollywood Palace in December 1967 with Brasilai '66 and Liza Minnelli?
Not only do I remember it, I have it on DVD mastered from the original 3/4" videotape.

I hope BK and other DRs will tolerate (not celebrate) my E&T-ness this week. Family starts arriving for the big doin's on Friday and Saturday. I shall try to drop by when I can.
We think we're going to try to do Cash for Clunkers, though our "clunker" is a 2002 Isuzu Axiom. Not really a clunker per se but qualifies due to its low mileage. That will mean for the first time ever in my life we will have two more or less new cars. I think we'll look at the Ford Escape Hybrid today.
-
Brasilai '66 was of course a little known knockoff group.
-
Well, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN may indeed be a wretched film, but it has a special place in my heart because of the Sergio/Lani connection.
-
Brasilai '66 was of course a little known knockoff group.
At least I wasn't it charge of spelling on the record labels. I had downloaded the program from the Inner Web - but since your copy is even better than mine, I won't offer you one.
-
Thanks for the thought DR ELMORE, but the cast was a bit off after that with little mistakes here and there....things that were never wrong before....so hopefully a nice audience of family and friends this afternoon will take care of it. We don't sell season tickets for the matinee, so everyone attending is someone who REALLY wants to see the show...and bought a ticket....they are not there just because they have a subscription ticket.
-
Yesterday was furniture, today is a DVD player.
Anthony's parents gave us one about 4 years ago (not even if I recall correctly) but it overheats and stops working. I've finally gotten fed up with it so we are off to Best Buy (our only option unless we wait until Long Island for Target or Wal-Mart) to purchase a new one.
Planned obsolescence!!!
-
I suppose I'm up - I almost made it to nine o'clock.
-
I hereby send excellent vibes and xylophones to all our under the weather hainsies/kimlets and say ENOUGH - everyone get better QUICK.
-
Yesterday at this time we were on page four. This is known as The Sunday Effect.
-
I remember the novelty toys in back of old comic books, but I never bought anything from those except Sea Monkeys, which were not a toy and were very disappointing.
Famous Monsters Magazine had the ginchiest noveltys. I think at one point I bought the spark spewing, walking, wind up Godzilla.
-
You know, I did buy a lot of foreign stamps and coins from the ads in various magazines. But those aren't novelties.
-
Oh, dear. I was just sent this press release for an upcoming Fringe show -
FAR OUT-The New Sci-Fi Musical Comedy is a whacky and whimsical musical
valentine to all those grade B-sci-fi-alien-invasion movies Hollywood
made in the 1950's. It’s an intergalactic clash of worlds when the
alien Supreme Leader—a singing-eyeball-diva (with the legs and voice of
Tina Turner)—and her entourage encounter an atomic-age desert town in
the midst of the cold war, its local mad scientist, small town sheriff,
extreme-army Colonel, and Sock Hop-obsessed teens, not to mention a
pair of (literally) star-crossed young lovers.
www.faroutthemusical.com
I went and listened - happily, they went exactly to the land we avoided musically - 1950s land - there is no way to do that anymore - it's just been done to death. Furthermore, they attempt to do exactly what we did in the opening number, only we did it three years ago (using movie titles in the song - the numbers, however, are completely different - and yes, they attempt a theremin - there's is fake - ours was real). I gotta tell you.
-
I plan to spend today doing nothing but sitting in front of the television and watching some of my all time favorite movies.
On the docket:
REVENGE OF THE CREATURE (1955)
EARTH VS THE SPIDER (19580
THE RED HOUSE (1947)
THIS IS NOT A TEST (1962)
THESE THREE (1936)
GEISHA BOY (1958)
PANIC IN YEAR ZERO (1962)
THE MUMMY (1932)
Don't know if I will get to all of them, but I will have fun trying.
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And it is Sunday. -Although, for a little while this morning, I had almost thought it was Friday. This past Friday. Then the caffeine kicked in... All better now.

RE: Novelty Stores
When we lived in Gales Ferry, CT, we would regularly drive up to Boston to visit some relatives, and we would usually make a stop at The (Boston) Commons. There was a magic store - the name escapes me right now - right by The Commons, and my brothers and I would always run in there and buy some magic trick or novelty item. Usually, we would restock our supply of "Magic Jumping Bean" and Disappearing Ink.
-
Hmmm... I just had to re-edit my previous post for a number of spelling and grammar errors. -Maybe I had too much coffee this morning? Hmm...

This morning I made some low fat strawberry ice cream. I didn't eat much of it, but since it's low fat, I figure it shoudl be all right in moderation. Now I'm off to the store to get olive oil and containers to freeze tomato sauce in. Then I'll have the tomatoes out of the way for the busy week ahead.
-
AND I went to Home Depot to look at glass tile for a backsplash - it's something I've really wanted to do, And I found one that will work perfectly!!! I brought home one sheet (it's the little tiles hooked together with mesh on the back - and it will go with the new counter, the wall paint, the floor and the cabinets. I am SOOO thrilled. It's a style they keep in stock, so I'm thinking I'll install it as soon as the countertops are in. I'm going to do the tile work myself. I think I can swing it

DR Cillaliz - Depending how much sauce you want to freeze, you could freeze it "flat" in Zip-Loc bags. Then you can have a "filing cabinet" of sauce portions.
-
Since then I've been in my recliner. I'm feeling much better, but not 100%. Tomorrow we kept the day clear so Edith and I can catch up on things and work together on our new software and things like that. I have to admit, I'm really glad that I don't have some major hearing or something stressful. I can rest, cook and pack up part of the kitchen today.

I considered that, but I have plenty of room in my little deep freeze so I decided to just use the plastic containers that are kind of flat. I'm freezing in relatively small portions - that way I won't overeat because I had to make a lot!

Ok, off to the store, have a good one everyone!

Sunday afternoon greetings. Richard and I are back from his Sunday obligation in Lima and our daily visit to John's bedside.
Thank you to DRs FJL, Cillaliz, Laura, Jane, TCB, Ben, MBarnum, td, JMK, DAW, Elmore, JRand, and Jose for all the vibes from last night and earlier today.
DR Elmore, to answer your question, Richard has become not only a brother, but the clergy-of-choice, which grants him/us access even during non-visitor times in the ICU. I can't speak for David.

I always liked the section in the grocery store marked, "Ice Cream Novelties." It confused me a great deal when I found out that "Adult Novelties" were not similar (well, for the most part).

I watched PSYCH while I ate lunch. It was an OK episode to start its new season. Cary Elwes, even heavier and more mature now, is still a pleasure to look at.
-
I also watched one DEXTER episode even before I started eating lunch, so that enabled me to get five or the six remaining episodes watched this afternoon.
What a pleasure to see this wonderful series again. I don't think Season 3 was quite the equal of seasons 1 or 2 (especially 2 which is my favorite), but it was still quite wonderful. Jimmy Smits made a great partner/nemesis for Dexter during the season.
-
Knowing you, BK, I can't imagine you ever dreaming about fake vomit!
-
When I go back down, I'll finish the last episode. Then, the bonus features are all contained on BD-Live on-line (which I thoroughly don't like since lots of people don't have their Blu-ray machines hooked up to the internet). The content doesn't look great, but I'll take a look anyway. Looks like some interviews and some script pages compared to novel pages.
-
PAGE FOUR!

Then, I should have plenty of time to finish VERTIGO before I start watching TRUE BLOOD.
-
And to start the topics - what were your favorite novelty items or toys from your childhood? Did you ever send away for them, or did you find them at the five and dime?
Without a doubt - disappearing ink. The kind you could splash on someone's clothes, but when it dried it disappeared.
Note to others: Diasppearing ink does not work equally well on all fabrics.
-
Congratulations to Michael S. on his millstone.

I've got a little more writing to do, and then I'll head back down to put the finishing touches on DEXTER viewing before I put the finishing touches on the review later tonight.

In more cheerful news from our household, Rob's move back home has begun. His lease expires at the end of this month and since he has only one quarter left at UC he'll be living here after Sept. 1. It also makes sense, because he's taking classes this fall both in Cincinnati (finishing his BA in philosophy) and in Dayton (EMT certification). And we live halfway between the two.

Thanks for the welcome back DR JFL. I just wish I had had time to make it to NY.

The pharmacy will contact the doctor tomorrow and try to sort it out. They said sometimes all it takes is for the doctor to document that other drugs have been tried, which is true. Two others made my hips hurt.

However, I'm guessing it was probably a Tungsten ring
Doubt it since I've never heard of it. I keep thinking Platinum & Keith says no. I know platinum is usually a lighter color. I really should remember. I'll have to ask again when he returns. They are currently at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh after spending several days in Dublin.
*And I like The Violet Hour too
Somehow I'm not surprised you found your way there ;), not that it is easy to find the entrance. We got lucky & found someone on the street to ask, after we walked right past the door.

DR Jose, I'm counting on you to take photos of Philadelphia, especially of the Courthouse & the new skyline. I was tired of lugging my heavy purse with the camera & of course was sorry I left it at the house. I was not aware the skyline of the city had changed & forgot how incredibly beautiful the Courthouse is.
Did you know you can take go to the top of the tower in the Courthouse? We found out the night before, unfortunately we didn't know to call in the morning & schedule a time. The first available slot was just about when we had to catch the train back to Doylestown. If I heard correctly only 4 people can go up at a time.

I know DR Jose can take better photos than these.
-
Congratulations on your new milestone, DR Michael S.
-
The cruise sounds fantastic, DR TCB. Can't wait to hear all about it.
-
The cruise sounds great, TCB!
-
It's been a long day. I pushed it a little too much, so I took a hot bath and am just going to kick back and watch tv tonight.
-
Those are lovely pictures, Jane.
-
The tomato sauce turned out really well. I added bell pepper this time. I took some of it and cooked some zucchini in it. It was very tasty
-
I agree with DR Laura, they are lovely pictures, Jane
-
Your trip sounds wonderful DR TCB. Hope you will enjoy it!

However, I'm guessing it was probably a Tungsten ring

Doubt it since I've never heard of it. I keep thinking Platinum & Keith says no. I know platinum is usually a lighter color.
Well platinum would look the same as white gold, so it's probably not that.
What about stainless steel? That would be a bit darker than silver/white gold/platinum.
Or could it be titanium?
-
Not sure what i will watch tonight. I still have the last 2 True Bloods. And the last 2 Royal Pains. And i will watch Big brother.
-
Those are lovely pictures, Jane.
Thanks. I just pulled them off the internet.

That is why I suspect Keith is correct about the platinum, however I did see a few darker grey rings.
Could be titanium. I'll let you all know when the mystery is solved or my memory returns. I do like the darker color of whatever it is.

Thanks Cilla

Thank you DAW, Cilla, and Jennifer. One of the last things my friend Stan said to me was that he wanted us to take another cruise together. He left me enough money to cover this curise, and I got an incredible (especially travelling as a single) deal, including free round trip airfare that just kind of landed in my lap.
-
I just hope I live long enough to go on this trip.

Good Evening!
Well... I wanted to take a walk. I needed to eat. So, that's what I did.

The things we think about as we get older. Did you take out insurance for the trip?

Thanks Jose.

That sounds like a very fun and exciting cruise, TCB. I hope you take a camera!
Thank you Ginny, Jane, and Laura. Yes, I bought a new camera, but unfortunately it will have the same inept camera operator.
DR TCB - One of the greatest benefits of digital photography is that it allows you to "practice", and you can see the results of that "practice" right away. -You don't have to wait for a roll of film to come back from the photo lab.
Just keep taking photos. Keep the ones you like, delete the ones you don't. No paper wasted, no money spent. You live in a very scenic part of the country, and I'm sure you could hone your photography skills between now and November.
*I've found that most people can take "good pictures". However, there usually is a learning curve to deal with when dealing with the actual camera. There are still some "basic" features on my camera that I'm still figuring out.
-
Glad to see Dear Jane is back!

Ain't that the truth! Oh yes, I have had too many surgeries not to buy insurance.

I love Philly. I haven't been for a few years but it's a great tourist town.
-
The chimi looks really good, but what are tostones?
Tostones are twice-fried green plantains. The plantains are sliced then deep-fried for a couple of minutes. They are then removed from the hot oil and allowed to cool a bit. They are then smashed flat, and then fried again to crisp them up.

DR Jane - I just hope the weather isn't too hazy on Tuesday. -And I also hope that I actually do make the trip. ;)
I made it into the city on Wednesday. It was hot & humid & my friend found it very annoying I was enjoying the warm day. Craig met us at the Farmers Market (I purchased shoo fly pie & a heath bar chip cookie, my friend got a pretzel filled with egg & cheese) next to the train station & we all walked around before heading to his apartment to visit with Ioana awhile. Ioana stayed home while we took Yogi for a walk. Yogi looked very cute in the Phillies bandanna I found him on Monday. Craig said he had been wanting one so we were all happy. Yogi preferred the treats that came with the bandanna.
You would like the pretzel place with the different fillings.

TCB, glad to hear about your cruise. I would love to take one with Anthony. I have to find a time when we are both not busy. Unfortunately, it's difficult (and expensive) to take the QE or the QM roundtrip. Difficult in the scheduling, that is. Oh, well. Maybe when I retire (in 15 years).

Well, there is the Mary 2 and the Victoria, with a new Elizabeth due next year. Cunard often offers cruises to England that include return air.

Today DR Samantha and her DBF Chris moved to Iowa City. It's her first time leaving home and she was very emotional when her parents left. I just called her and she's doing a bit better, but feels like a fish out of water.

I had a Subway turkey salad for my main meal today, so to make up for it, I am having Chocolate
Fag Fig Greek ice cream

I should have taken a picture of my dinner: oatmeal.

Maybe Samantha should come visit here, and she wouldn't feel so lonely.

I ate platanos when I was in Puerto Rico.

I think she'll love it. She's registered for college at a community college where she'll do her general requirements and Chris is registered at the U of I in engineering with an emphasis in wind. They are close to downtown and close to campus. Iowa City is a cool place. I think after they get out and about she'll be happy

Okay, just one more photo. My Concierge Verandah Cabin on the ship.

On the final episode of Lost, Season Four (well, the last half of the two-parter) - but now I have a craving for sweet potato fries, which I found out are very calorie friendly, and even the fat grams aren't too bad.
-
My family visited the cemetery today. Kaddish was said several times and people were remembered, and gravestones were cleaned because a cemetery's so-called perpetual care is not enough.
-
Beautiful room DR TCB!
-
That is nice DR FJL. We need to plan a trip to L.A. The seventeenth is the first anniversary of Keith's mother's passing. We kind of missed the date on the Jewish calendar. Her cousin wrote to say she lit the candle & said Kaddish. We, or I, will do something on the 17th.

HEALING VIBES FOR DRS ELMORE & MATT H.
Thanks very much, DR Jane. Glad to have you back.
-
I am dragging. I will be in bed soon. I am very tired. I am also very excited tomorrow to see HARRY POTTER with my loverly goddaughter Charlotte.
I'm going to see it tomorrow with my friend Hal!
Small world!
-
Thanks DR Matt H.
'night
-
I finished the last riveting episode of DEXTER and then went to BD-Live to look at the bonus selections.
I guess BD-Live hasn't gone active yet for this title (it IS nine days before street date) because I couldn't get it to connect using either one of my Blu-ray players.
-
Then I finished the last half of VERTIGO. Such a memorable and poignant movie.
-
The other day on TCM when they showed an entire day of Judy Garland movies, I told myself I wanted to see FOR ME AND MY GAL all the way through again, so I put that in after I finished VERTIGO. I didn't finish it; it's a longer movie than most musicals at the time. I'll be able to finish it tomorrow night.
-
Then I watched tonight's exciting TRUE BLOOD episode. The Tara scenes were repulsive, but everything else was gripping. Just love the show!
-
Right now I'm planning to take tomorrow off. The next review project is a 3 1/2 hour Criterion selection, and since I'm going to HARRY POTTER tomorrow, it doesn't appear there will be time to work on it until tomorrow night. Depending on what gets sent to me next week, it looks to be totally a Criterion week for me.
-
Now I think I'll head downstairs to bed.
Good night!
-
And I believe I shall be getting ready for bed myself now too.
Goodnight.
-
I should send bk the fake vomit that's somewhere in a box in the closet.
Must now read notes.
I'll be back.
-
Dear Jane, titanium is very popular right now, and is a dark color (we buy it at work).
-
I did order my tickets,
La Jolla Playhouse "Herringbone" 8/20,
Royce Hall "An Evening with R. Crumb" 10/29,
Royce Hall " Culture Clash 25th anniversary" 10/30,
Getty Villa "Aristophanes" 9/12
-
How did it get to be 9:30 already.
What a lazy weekend.
I slept all afternoon, it felt good.

I have a question for bk.
Did I imagine that some things overlap and are the same in, The Brain from Planet X, The First Nudie Musical, and The Creature Wasn't Nice.

Hello 3 guests!
-
I have a question for bk.
Did I imagine that some things overlap and are the same in, The Brain from Planet X, The First Nudie Musical, and The Creature Wasn't Nice.
Not sure what you're asking. If you're asking if there's any music and/or lyrics or dialogue that is peculiar to all three projects, no.
-
I finished season four of Lost - I'm curious if anyone was actually surprised by who was in the casket - I guessed immediately - well, if one thinks about it, it can only be one person.
Now, here's the big question - since I don't really want to wait until December (season five on Blu-Ray comes out on my birthday), is there somewhere online that one can watch the season five episodes? That way I can be all caught up for the start of season six.
-
bk, I only see 6 of the Season 5 episodes of Lost at www.abc.com.

I'm sorry I missed you. :(

Hi DAW
Hi George
Hi, Sam. I'm sorry I missed you, too.
-
Dearest DR PennyO! I've missed you enormously. Welcome back, darlin!
I'm back from a very good meeting with Brent Barrett and Chris Denny and I am very excited about this recording. Yep, I am!
I LOVE Brent Barrett!! Well, I love PennyO, too...but not in the same way. ;)
-
Congrats to Michael Shayne on his 7000 Posts!

I was doing my monthy bookkeeping on Friday and I realized that there had been a very substantial withdrawl from my accounts.
Therefore, I guess it is now official. I am leaving November 12 for a two week cruise of Italy and Spain. I will be returning home on Thanksgiving.
Sounds like it'll be a great trip, TCB! Congrats and Enjoy! :D
