Well, you've read the notes, the notes played like pinochle, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently playing strip poker and it's not pretty.
-
And the word of the day is: IRENIC!
-
I've never played canasta and I don't think anyone in my family has ever played canasta. I vaguely remember some people that I know mentioning that they played canasta, but it was years ago and I don't remember who they were.
-
Hi George
-
Good morning everyone.
To a glorious Sunday.
-
It's 4:36 AM and I am wide awake...hmmmm
-
Today I don't have any plans until about 6:00 PM. So of course I'm awake now, lol.
-
We may be going here today http://www.vickscorner.com/ to see this http://www.vickscorner.com/antique.htm
-
This is actually a pretty good map of the area....DAW - there are actually TWO Okobojis :D
http://www.vickscorner.com/map.htm
-
I've played a lot of card games, but never canasta. A lot of people around here still play bridge
-
I can't think of anything else to say so....laters
-
there are actually TWO Okobojis :D
Ack!
-
I know plenty of people who still play Hearts. Pinochle and Canasta, not so much.
-
So if bk attended a Pinochle/Canasta party at which Churros were served, would he laugh and laugh and laugh?

I see that they are not doubling the narrator and the professor.

Nope. Instead, they are doubling Narrator / Ensemble 9.

The official Nine trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_5_lzags3I)
Thanks for posting. I've been meaning to do that.
Couple of interesting changes from the stage version
Liliane La Fleur is no longer a producer but Guido's agent and possibly no longer French as Judi Dench (who plays the part) does not do it with a French accent.
I wonder if that means Follies Bergeres has been dropped
And men other than gudio appear init
-
Sophia Loren still looks stunning!!
-
there are actually TWO Okobojis :D
Ack!
Is that my friend, Kathleen Hughes (aka: Mrs. Stanley Rubin)?
-
NINE concept is a little like Chicago as all the musical numbers are seen through Roxie's eyes and imagination.
This time the film's conceit is that it takes place on a movie set as he looks back on his past and what is going on in the present. The songs are Guido's vision and not character "stopping to sing" as in the stage version

I do not know, DR Druxy. I simply swiped it shamelessly from the TAO "Brain" Facebook page.
-
I have a technical question about Home Theater Systems that, hopefully, somebody on this board can help me with.
Lately, I've been having a bit of an intermittent problem with my suround sound system.
What happens?
Every now-and-then, the dialogue drops and gets a little staticy. This will last for a very few seconds, up to a minute or two. Then everything is okay. Awhile later, it may (or may not) happen again...then its okay again.
At first, I thought it was a problem with particular discs, since this was only happening with newer titles that came from a particular company. Then, I put on an older disc last night, from another company, and, for a time, the same thing happened.
This system [Samsung Home Theater] was professionally installed last April, but the problem only started recently. The house was pre-wired for surround sound.
I'm not sure if the Blu-Ray player has gone bad, or just one of the speakers. 99% of the discs I play are regular DVDs?
Any ideas what might be happening?
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
-
If you have 5 minutes and the inclination, here is a light-hearted clip of Pavarotti (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zjrgbCaC1U) discussing embarrassing moments onstage.
-
I do not know, DR Druxy. I simply swiped it shamelessly from the TAO "Brain" Facebook page.
I think that's from IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE. She made some nice money licensing that image.
-
Druxy wait until Matt Hough comes aboard he most likely will have an answer. He's helped me
-
Good morning!
Another cool morning, and it's supposed to be a little cooler this afternoon instead of the 90 we had yesterday (my A/C popped on for the first time in a week). Fall can't get here soon enough for me.
-
DR Druxy,
It sounds like there is a loose wire connection or a bad cable wire for your center channel speaker. Are you in a position to check to make sure of those connections are firmly attached where they need to be - on the back of the speaker and going into the receiver's center channel connection? That would be the first thing I'd check (or get someone who installed it to check for me).
-
Another day off for me. This morning I'm going to put in the first season of LEVERAGE and watch some episodes (one of which I'll watch as I eat lunch).
This afternoon, I'm going to watch the Bollywood movie DR MBarnum sent me eons ago. It's 142 minutes, so that will take most of the afternoon. If I have time left over this afternoon, I'll likely watch some OUR GANG shorts or more LEVERAGE, depending on how much time I have.
Tonight, it will likely be THIS IS SPINAL TAP on Blu-ray and maybe one of thee Lex Barker Tarzan films. (Can't remember which one came next in the chronology.)
-
This brand new (as of new IRS rules this year) Sept 15th intensive-mini-tax-season being so close to Labor Day is getting in the way of my holiday weekend internet watching. But of course, at this particular point in economic history, I will not complain about there being TOO MUCH work! I'll just note it, and try to appreciate it.
Hoping to catch up soon!
-
Cute line on CNN - After being offered chocolate-covered bacon by an interviewee, Jon King referred to it as "an argument for health care reform in its own right." :)
-
DR Jane, re: the roller coaster topic from yesterday.
I meant to mention this, but since you also like roller coasters do you find that they tend to bump you around a lot. I am only 5 '3 and medium size. But i find so many of these coasters are built for men. I find myself being shaken and bruised a lot because i get thrown around so much!
-
Yes DR DRUXY that is indeed Ms Hughes from IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE - an iconic image. Can she license an image of herself that supposedly belongs to Universal?
-
Sold out audience last night - although empty seats where season tickets holders decided NOT to come.
Took awhile to warm them up, but they laughed at last and kept it up until the end.
I thought I had had my last glass of it.
Oh no.
No. Here it is.
-
Well, my morning surf is concluded so I'll deal with some computer stuff and then head downstairs to begin LEVERAGE's first season on DVD. Looking forward to seeing those episodes again.
WBBL.
-
Yes DR DRUXY that is indeed Ms Hughes from IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE - an iconic image. Can she license an image of herself that supposedly belongs to Universal?
Evidently she can when they use it to advertise things other than the movie.
It's called "right of publicity".
That's why, in my book, I used caricatures of the various movie stars, rather than their photos.
Caricatures are protected by the fact that they are parody.
-
DR Druxy,

Thanks. I'll check it out.
-
Oh....I see.....thanks, DR DRUXY. I didn't know that. Her image belongs to her, unless they are using it to promote the film it was taken for. Interesting.
-
And now I am off to work.
-
I've been awake for awhile, but I'm slow getting started today!
-
I've been awake for awhile, but I'm slow getting started today!
That's right-- me and Uncle Joe are movin' kinda slow.
-
Good morning, all!
I slept very late, caught up on all the posts from yesterday, put my laundry in the washers, went to the market, mopped the bathroom and now I am back. I remember having dreams about orchestrations for FINIAN'S RAINBOW, but I slept very well. I am loving this weather in Manhattan and the fact that the Upper West Side is very empty of its populace.
Today at 4:15 I shall meet DR vixmom and the Vixter at AVENUE Q and step out with them. I have some work on OH BOY! today and I think I'm putting off defrosting the fridge until tomorrow morning.
I'm really hoping that, on Tuesday, George comes in and finishes the bookcases so I can spend part of the day getting the shelves back together. I cannot get into my clothes closet with all of the clutter infront of it - thank God for shorts and T-shirts! - and I'm hoping that my suit, which I haven't looked at since my dad's death in 2007 still fits. Otherwise, I'm going shopping.
Time to take the clothes from the washers.
-
I've been awake for awhile, but I'm slow getting started today!
That's right-- me and Uncle Joe are movin' kinda slow.
Tell me that's not a euphemism!
-
Tell me that's not a euphemism!
On HHW, anything is possible. Even probable. :)

DR MBarnum the photo of Herbie & his new little brother Klaus is too sweet.

I'm the same height as you are and do find myself getting tossed around a bit. I like the modern kind with individual straps or bars that hold me in place. I have a neck problem so a head rest also helps. That way I'm not thrown around so much. I cannot go on the magnificent old roller wooden coasters. If the car hold more than one person & doesn't require individual locking straps then I'm usually lucky to have Keith along with me. He doesn't go on anything that loops or corkscrews.

Possible T.O.D.
I am sure that we have already done this topic a few dozen times, but
"What is your Number #1 comfort food?"
I would have to say tuna casserole. It is kind of like wrapping a cocoon around me. The other number one choice used to be my mother's Tamale Pie, but I don't have the recipe.
-
Well, no one here to play with, so I shall return later.
-
This was just to weird not to post.
Listening to the radio on my way back from Out of the Closet just now. I got a chance to listen to News of the Weird (great segment, one of the reasons I just bought an extreme range radio this week), anyway one of the :
A newspaper in Bangladesh apologized for having taken articles from "The Onion" (I think everyone knows what paper that is) and reporting them as real. Mainly Neil Armstrong saying that the moon landing was all a hoax, and various other articles that relate to world events.
Some things just baffle me to no end.

All of this came about via the "Astaire bill".
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117503887.html?categoryid=18&cs=1
The final bill was totally watered down from what is discussed in this Variety piece. As passed into law, all that is really affected is commercial advertisements.
BTW: If you look down toward the bottom of the article, under "Burden of Proof," you might find a name that you recognize.

Must get back to going through boxes for another trip to Out of the Closet tomorrow morning.

I've had the best day thuis for in the last six weeks. The hands cramps, which were pretty bad for the last two days, have not been a problem today, and it's the closest to normal I've felt in a long while. Not out of the woods yet by any means, but I am so encouraged.
-
Thanks to DRs Vixmom, DAW, and Cillaliz for the comments about next Friday's halftime tribute to John. While it's fitting, part of me wishes it had taken place sooner than it will. They've waited until Franklin's first home game, but it will be like ripping the scab off a wound that's just beginning to heal.
-
I hope NINE is a big fat hit, but I predict that it won't be. EVen with all those well known names, the piece has never had great popular success - less than two years on Broadway in its original run and a well regarded revival that depended on star casting to sell tickets. And while the Yeston songs are well crafted and sophisticated, they don't have that cynical pizzazz that made the CHICAGO tunes work so well in the 21st century.
I hope I'm wrong, but I just can't see this being a big hit.
-
I watched three complete episodes of LEVERAGE in the late morning/early afternoon. The pilot is loads of fun as we get to know the various characters and their quirky personalities, and the second episode is even better.
-
Then I watched the Bollywood movie FRIENDS FOREVER which DR MBarnum sent me quite a while ago. I did like the central male relationship very much; very touching and I believed their closeness and loving bond. The love stories weren't of much interest, and the melodrama just not my thing. The musical numbers often went on too long past their effectiveness, but I understand that's the nature of the beast. They were certainly colorful.
So, thanks, MBarnum, for this nice introduction to one of your most cherished genres of movies. You haven't made a convert, but it was certainly a change of pace.
-
I then went back to LEVERAGE and started my fourth episode of the day. This one guest stars Sam Anderson (who plays Bernard on LOST) as a corrupt construction company owner. I'm going to enjoy seeing him get his comeuppance, and it's nice to see him play someone other than the sweet Bernard.
-
I've never played canasta. I'm not sure I've ever known anyone who knew how to play.
-
Pinochle is played weekly in this house.
-
Well, there is no TRUE BLOOD tonight (next week is the season finale), but I believe MAD MEN is new tonight. However, I'll record it and watch tomorrow while I eat lunch.
-
So, I'm heading down now to put up the folded laundry and then get back to finishing the LEVERAGE episode I had started and then on to some Blu-ray discs.

Studio City water main break damages cars, floods buildings, closes roads
September 6, 2009 | 8:02 am
Coldwater Canyon Avenue could be closed for three days after a 64-inch water main broke in Studio City, damaging nearby homes and businesses.
Ventura Boulevard is expected to be closed until at least noon today, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department The break occurred at 10:40 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Coldwater Canyon and Dickens Street, causing widespread damage to cars, flooding buildings and weakening retaining walls.
Some residents were evacuated and 120 firefighter responded to the scene.
According to the fire department, the water was 3-4 feet deep and at least one person was rescued from a car.
No one was hurt.
Officials are investigating the cause of the water main break.
Maybe BK got those boxes up into shelves just in time.

Well, we've decided to have a stay-at-home indoor picnic for Labor Day tomorrow, so another trip to Kroger is in order.
Bye for now!
-
My parents used to have raucous festivities when they entertained their Pinochle club.
I played Canasta throughout my early teens.
I was an avid Pinochle player in the Navy and college until I discovered Bridge.
My married years were all but consumed by Duplicate Bridge - games at local clubs on weekday nights, short trips to local tournaments on weekends and occasional out of city jaunts for National Events.
Most of the area's major events were held at the Ambassador Hotel in LA - and we often ate at the Brown Derby across the street. After the Ambassador closed the events moved to the Pasadena Convention Center.

I knew something was screwy because I went to go to Jerry's for a sandwich and Whitsett was a total disaster - cars coming onto Whitsett from every direction possible and backing up traffic unbelievably. I did manage to turn left and take the back entrance to Jerry's but had no idea why Ventura was closed. However, by the time I finished my sandwich, Ventura was open and everything was fine. I'm about a mile from Coldwater and two blocks considerably north of where the problem was.

I'm with MattH re Nine. First of all, what no one is admitting is that this film has been in deep hell for some time, with many reshoots happening, including major dance reshoots here in LA. I hear there are more coming. As MattH points out, Nine was never the success it seems to want to think it was, and I think it basically holds 0 interest for the people who turn movies into hits these days. Add to that the fact that its director seems to be a one trick pony in regards to movie musicals (just the look of the film alone would tell you that) and now we're being told that they are attempting to use the same device as Chicago, i.e. seeing all the numbers as performance numbers, I'd say they're grasping at straws right about now. But, you never know.

How did you like Bedtime Stories? Is it very juvenile? I got it today from the library. But i'm not even sure my niece will watch it. I may ending up watching it myself.

When i was younger i used to ride the monster here a lot with my uncle (cause he loves coasters too). But i would go bouncing around!
If you had truly almost flown out of a roller coaster you would not want to ride one you could barely stay inside of. I admit I was a couple of inches shorter.
I've had numerous neck injuries, more than I can count, and must be careful. As the boys got older and didn't need me to ride with them I would let them test a new ride & give and report on how bumpy it was. Very sad were the years my neck was so bad I could not go on any roller coasters at all. It was very depressing for me to go to an amusement park. The last time we went to Cedar Point, (http://www.cedarpoint.com) a place you would love, I saved the photo of me on the big roller coaster as a reminder to stay off the rides. I look terrified, and I was. I thought my neck was going to fall off.

Well, today (so far) has been a day of doing nothing but watching TV, eating and HHWing. :) But now, I need to take a shower, get dressed and go to my sister's to help with some stuff. It shouldn't take too long, but you never know. Tomorrow will definitely be another day of doing nothing, mainly because my sister will be out of town for the day! ;) Hopefully, I'll be home in time to see "Mad Men" on hi-def (it's at 7:00 pm PDT). "Defying Gravity" will be on at 10 p.m., so there's no problem seeing that.
Have a good rest of the day, all!

BK - we heard a report on NPR early this morning about the water main break in Studio City and I wondered how it would affect you. Is your water brown? Are you under a boil advisory?
Can you tell that we live in a neighborhood where water main breaks occur fairly frequently?

I am back from a wonderful dinner with DR vixmom and the vixter; I met them after the show and we went to John's Pizzeria, which is next to the St James where FINIAN'S RAINBOW will open next month. The company was sparkling and the pizza was delish. Who could ask for anything more?
The original production of NINE was, for me, the last of the really stunning musicals: that fantastic tiled set in black and white, the fantastic costumes in black for everyone until the colored ones for the Casanova film, followed after the suicide attempt by the same costumes from the beginning in white, that amazing cast of women and Raul Julia, and the brilliant staging of Tommy Tune. There was also the added attraction of a score I like a lot, scored by the great Jonathan Tunick for a big orchestra of around 27 players. It was one of my greatest moments in a Broadway theatre, especially since most of the shlock produced around it at the time that I was seeing wasn't so hot. The original production was the epitome of chic which is an essence missing a lot from theatre theses days. I wish the film well, although I have a grudge that Rob Marshall was stupid enough to drop Jonathan Tunick from the roster, and I know that chic is a talent Tommy Tune has as a director that I am not certain belongs to Mr Marshall. We'll see.
Happy Birthday to Toby!

140-POUND COUGAR CAPTURED IN SEATTLE'S LARGEST CITY PARK
SEATTLE — A cougar that prowled through Seattle for about a week and forced the closure of the city's largest park was captured early Sunday, wildlife officials said.
The cougar was immobilized with a tranquilizer in Discovery Park early Sunday, Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesman Darren Friedel said.
An enforcement officer tracked the animal after authorities were told the cougar had been spotted Saturday evening, the latest sighting in or near the 534-acre preserve, Friedel said.
The cougar is a 2 1/2-year-old male, weighs 140 pounds and is in very good health , Capt. Bill Hebner said. Wildlife agents are considering releasing it into the wild in Snohomish County, north of Seattle, he said.
"It's a very good prospect for relocation," Hebner said. "It wasn't aggressive or stalking people, and it maintained its natural respect for the wild."
The animal likely preyed on house cats during its time in the park, he said.
Jennifer - maybe Montreal is next!

At least they didn't kill it.

DR Kerry have you settled into your new place? Is it a house, duplex, apartment, etc?
-
DR elmore thanks for the dinner report. Will you see the Vixwomen next month when they return for Finian's Rainbow?
-
The Magnum (http://www.cedarpoint.com/_includes/flash/media_player_popup.cfm?videoID=13408&videoWidth=320) was the ride that made me realize my neck was not up to these anymore. Im afraid of heights & have to laugh that watching the video bothers me while I found riding it to be great fun.
Thanks for sharing that-- it was great to see!

Jane-- thanks for asking. Yes, I am pretty much settled. I have about 35 boxes of books unpacked, some art up (just aboput all that I'm going to put up since I more or less upholstered the walls of my prevous place with paintings and photos), most of the furniture where I want it (I still have a little figuring to do). Some things will get moved around as I adjust to the space.
It's a stucco, southwestern, sort of pueblo deco 2 bedroom bungalow built in 1940 in a very quiet neighborhood. I have a small yard (with a small pool) that Sugar can enjoy. It's feeling more and more like home, and getting to be here the other morning when we had such a great rain was particularly nice.

I hope Vixmom checks in and lets us know what they both thought of the show!

Hopefully.

Glad you enjoyed it DR Kerry.
We lived in Michigan at least 2 1/2 hours from Cedar Point so we didn't go very often. Once we stayed at the lovely old hotel with a 2 minute walk to the park. We invited the boys best friends to join us. We were very grateful for the 2 minute walk when Keith got very sick on one of the newer rides. Needless to say that was his last time on anything that did a corkscrew. He doesn't do loops either.
I told him he felt like I do when I fly & his reaction was "no way or you would never fly". In my opinion it is easier to avoid rides that corkscrew than flying on a plane. ;D

DR Kerry your new bungalow sounds just about perfect.:) Does Sugar swim?
-
I hope Vixmom checks in and lets us know what they both thought of the show!
She's probably still stunned.

She is quite interested in the pool (although we had one at the other house, so she has spent enough time around one-- just not for 2 years).
I'll take her in soon, maybe even tomorrow, so she can get a good idea where the steps are and how to get out. From what I recall when I took her into the other pool, she did not care for it. Our previous dog, Mazal, was a wonderful Black Lab whose parents would dive off the board and swim down to the bottom of the pool to fetch. Mazal would have none of it and practically scratched my arms and chest off trying to avoid going in the pool. I didn't want to make her swim; I just wanted to make sure she knew what the water was and how to get out of it safely!

When you and DR Sandra see it, I have a feeling she'll be more stunned than you will be!
-
I doubt Sherlock would want to swim in a pool.
-
I doubt that Miss Dixie Bell would want to swim in a pool.
-
When I awoke from a short nap, I found four people playing pinochle at the kitchen table. . .

Hopefully you know these people and it's OK for them to be at your kitchen table!!!

LOL DR Kerry. I'm sure one of the 4 people is DR td's Dear Mother. :)

Ah well then. I hope they're all playing pinochle on the right day then!!! ;)

;D

Water seems fine. I finished I Am Waiting, then also finished William Gibson's account of the out-of-town travails of Two For the Seesaw - very interesting reading.
-
I doubt that Toby and Dylan would want to swim in a pool.
-
Now I think I'll take a shower, and then we'll see what the rest of the evening brings.
-
That's Toby the canine, not Toby the birthday boy.
-
I bet Toby the birthday boy likes to swim in water, or splash around in it.
-
Well, no one can say we didn't get to page six. I've showered, am feeling relaxed, moved some more DVDs to the garage and now I'll go watch another movie, I suppose.
-
Wow! Barely six pages.
-
There. That is much better.
-
I don't think I have anything to add today.

I don't think I have anything to add to day either! ;)

That's Toby the canine, not Toby the birthday boy.
I'm glad you clarified! :)

Well, I didn't go to my sister's today and she didn't call me. I just tried calling her on my cell phone (my only phone) and the call didn't go through! I dialed the numbers, there was silence and then about 15 seconds later, it just beeped a few times and displayed the message: "SIGNAL FADED CALL WAS LOST." I couldn't even call to get my own messages. :-\ I hope that this problem doesn't last very long.
-
Two posts in the last hour? Not very sporting.
-
It's midnight! Time for bed. I was sure our DR vixmom would post about AVENUE Q and I hope she and the vixter got home safely.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Well, it's real early for me, but I've some TV watching to do up in my bedroom, so I'm going to say good night.
"Good night."
-
What a bunch of WUSSBURGERS.
-
Happy Birthday to Toby, the human!
-
Yes DR MBARNUM - lovely doggie picture!
-
Watching the extras on the HERE'S LUCY Season One Set. This MIGHT be the only season of this show I buy....
-
I've been keeping my friend company on the night before the celebration of life services. We have a brief run through at 10:30 tomorrow morning and then the services are at 2:00 PM and 7:00 Pm. I have a feeling it's going to be a very long day
-
Happy birthday to Toby
-
I need to get some sleep. It's been a long day and tomorrow will be a really long day. Good night
-
Between Lucie Arnaz and Gale Gordon - and a STAR each week - it sends me running for the hills.
DR DRUXY thanks for the link to that story. I sort of remember when it was going on and Mrs Astaire was upset.....and lo and behold....yes I saw a name I recognize from HHW in the article!
-
Rest vibes for DR CILLA LIZ.
-
I am intrigued by the NINE preview.....I haven't really ever listened to the score - since I don't get pretentious EYE-talian movies - I have never even seen 8 1/2.
I enjoy them more now....I really liked CONTEMPT....wait I think that's a French film....anyway....we shall see.
-
And now for LA RONDE on TCM.
-
Just finished watching Breakfast at Tiffany's - as you know, I was really unhappy with the SE DVD of it - all brown and ugly. Well, I taped it and Barefoot In the Park on HD-NET movies and holy moley on rye - Breakfast looked really good - still would prefer a hair more blue, but so much better than the DVD. And Barefoot, whose DVD is ancient and yellow, is gorgeous in hi-def in its new transfer. Now I want all the Paramount classics in HD! Why they don't put Tiffany's, one of their most popular films, which has had heaven knows how many DVD releases, on Blu-Ray is anyone's guess.
