Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like being in a candy store, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in a candy store having chocolate moolk.

Good morning, all! I got out of bed at 6:30 because I have much to accomplish today. This morning, I want to continue vacuuming, cleaning and putting away all the clutter that was driving me mad. Around 11, I will start preparing myself for the John McGlinn memorial. I want to be at Merkin Hall around 1 pm; I habe lots of things for people I will see there and I need to get my head around exactly what i want to say about McGlinn.

DR George, I believe the three act musical was a remnant of the 3-Act European operetta, and many of Victor Herbert's shows were in three acts, among them BABES IN TOYLAND and THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER. By the 1920s the 2-act form became supreme: DEAREST ENEMY, by Rodgwrs & Hart, was written in three acts, but performed in two, with the short third act called an Epilogue and attached to Act Two.

TOD:
DVD: I think think in this clutter; I know the Netflix items are still here
CD: a lot of John McGlinn, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway
    VCR: this porn is stale

Pretty busy weekend with not a lot of time to watch DVDs.

Tonight we go to temple for Rosh Hashanah services and on Sunday, I drive down to San Antonio to direct a book trailer for ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD.

Perhaps on Saturday, I'll get time to watch MANAGEMENT or more episodes of CSI, Season 9.

Wi-fi on Amtrak. -Which has been in the works for a while now. With the number of business commuters between DC, Philly, NYC and Boston, I'm surprised it's been taking so long to get it implemented.

Today would have been John McGlinn's 56th birthday, and we were seven years and one day apart in birthdays. What I find the most amazing in inventorying the McGlinnventory is how similar in music and composers our tastes were. Maybe that'ds why I still prefer his concert presentations of musicals better than anyone else's.

I notice the good news that WB finally has release Casablanca as a single release without all the things found oin the gift box. I rather just have the movie instead what they have to offer. BUT it took them 9 months to do so.

NOW
If they can do the same thing for The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind. Both of these films should look spectacular in Hi Def.

TWOZ is being release this Tuesday and only in the gift box if one wants it in BR. Gone With the WInd sometime in November I believe and also in a gift box. I hope we won't have to wait 9 months for these to show up as just disc release.

I hope they don't do this to Ben-Hur. What can they offer in a gift box. A replica of tickets to the chariot race? A replica of the chains that Ben-Hur wore in the galley? Don't need it!!

Wow! I can see almost all of my floor again. The shelves are looking good and I'm very pleased. I need to go through sections like the music papers and the orchestration books later in the weekend and get them organized. The scores look realy good at the moment and everything's fitting in okay. I will keep pulling things for the Miami U Library as I go along.

I have a couple more hours of cleanup on the apartment before I begin the cleanup of me. Now that it's past 9 am I can vacuum. I hate to vacuum too early and disturb the lady in the apartment below mine. I hope I have a new vacuum bag under the sink.

You can get both THE WIZARD OF OZ and GONE WITH THE WIND on Blu-ray from Amazon.uk. without all the doo-dads. Warners BDs play in all BD players, and the price of the two together from the UK plus shipping is cheaper that the Amazon price on one of the special boxes here. Many people are doing this.

PT this morning was the most vigorous workout I've had since I started there. Some very long stretching sections and a final (somewhat painful) one on the floor balanced on a foam pole that was unusual to say the least.

I go again Monday morning.

So, DR MattH, do you think the physical therapy is helping?

I'm listening to McGlinn's wonderful recording of Kern's glorious show, SITTING PRETTY, which is one of his best. Right now, Jason Graae is singing the very funny and very un-PC "In Bongo on the Congo" with its fantastic orchestration. I think it's right next to his SHOW BOAT in his recording work.

Is the PT helping? Sometimes when I get home after it, I feel relaxed and really good. Today, I'm feeling achy and tight in my back and hand. So, the definitive answer is: it varies.

The exercises they give me for "homework" do give me a sense of working to help myself, and I guess over the long haul it will have been worth it. I know now I can drive in the car without feeling like my right arm is going to drop off, and sitting watching movies doesn't require my getting into some ridiculous looking contortions in order to minimize pain.

Progress is happening, but it's slow, slow, slow.

Long story, short:  it was as stunning as I remembered it.  If you like your opera to grab you by the collar and repeatedly smack you across the face with its drama, this one is for you!

DR Dan(the Man), I'm glad you found the correct DVD of ELEKTRA. It's the one Strauss opera I don't have on DVD so I just ordered it.

My apartment now looks messy as opposed to its chaotic state of yesterday. I think it's time to begin the cleanup of myself and to contemplate the events of the afternoon. I also have things to bring to people at the memorial: several McGlinn friends who provided me with CDs of live concerts have asked for other concerts they didn't have, and John Vogel, the McGlinn estate executor, William Hicks, the secret behind John's success, and his brother and sister have asked for all of the concerts and BBC broadcasts. I've been burning up my iTunes with discs in the past week.

I'm also taking Evan, John's younger brother, his Gramophone Award for Excellence for the recording of ANYTHING GOES. His sister Lorin got John's similar award for SHOW BOAT. They're quite beautiful framed awards with the CD mounted on it. When John died 9n February, I believe it was DR Michael S who disliked the ANYTHING GOES recording; it still won a Gramophone Award for Excellence in Recording!

Various things about "Big Brother" finale, "America's Got Talent" finale and "Project Runway"

SPOILAGE

Dir fjkfa f;lk ;lj f;lkajkrkljlkqj;lkj First, and most importantly, I am totally jazzed about Jordan winning "Big Brother".  She won by a vote of 5-2.  Kevin, of all people, voted for Natalie.  True to her, although he was going to stab her in the back and take Jordan to the final two had he managed to win the final HOH challenge.   Jordan and Jeff were my two favorite players this season.  When Jeff was evicted a couple of weeks ago, I think everyone assumed Jordan would just fall by the wayside.  Her winning two of the three contests for final HOH -- and the power to choose who stood beside her in the final two -- was a great testament to the strength and intelligence of this waitress from Matthews NC.  Jordan is young, a bit naive, and more than a bit "drifty" in the way she expresses herself.  But her actions speak loudest that she is smart and knows how to survive.  The other vote for Natalie came from Russell, who made stupid move after stupid move all season.

And it was great seeing Jeff -- to whom America accorded the coup d'etat power a month ago (and he used it VERY WELL, INDEED) -- win the America vote for a $25,000 prize as America's favorite player.  Jeff was the SOLE voice of reason in the house from start to finish.  His one mistake was believing the lie Natalie concocted for Kevin to deliver to him.  That lie led to a bad move and a betrayal that was Jeff's undoing.

On "America's Got Talent", I have to say I could only bring myself to watch one or two shows all season until this week.  I detest everything about David Hasselhoff, and he has a way of making everything about "himself."  I have been following the results of various weeks and was intrigued by this female opera singer, who survived cancer and the threat of never-being-able-to-sing-again-and yet-overcame-it, and the very odd survival of a true country guy singing soulful songs each week.  Barbara Padilla has a nice voice.  She may have done a great job a week ago with "Ave Maria" but her "O Mio Babbino Caro" was a bit on the left-me-wanting-Dame-Kiri-side.  The controlled sustained notes are NOT her strength at all and she was a bit wobbly.   On the other hand, Kevin Skinner was an enigma to me.  All season he has defied the odds by being advanced.  Both Piers and Sharon Osbourne referred to him as a "dark horse". His voice isn't anything like what we hear from Country singers nowadays.  It's more like what I was exposed to in the 1950s and 60s.  In that regard, it's purer and less "crossover-driven".  There is a sweet and touching naivete about Skinner when he's playing and singing.  His eyes are soulful, his voice is strong.  His backstory is the kind that America takes to its heart.  An out-of-work chicken catcher is how he describes himself.  He's a representative of a lost segment of American society -- the utterly poor who manage to survive against all odds.  And yes, they dream.  And in Skinner's case...that dream comes true.  I was very moved when he was named winner of "America's Got Talent"...and it appeared that all the other acts in the final 10 felt that way about him, too.

And as the judges continued to say all during the final night, each of the acts has a bright future.  I did not think Padilla would, or should, win.  It would have been the second consecutive win by a singer whose focus is opera.  Last year's winner had a great story, but he was civic-opera-in-middle-America at best.  Padilla is still learning.  Can't see her in a Vegas act at all, though.

"Project Runway" out of Los Angeles for the first time isn't much different from the "Project Runway" out of NYC.  The designers are all bright, funny, bitchy and two-faced about each other.   Tim Gunn is Tim Gunn.  And Heidi is Heidi.  We've seen Michael Kors once.  Last night we had Tommy Hilfiger, though, and he was just fine.  In addition, the guest judge was Eva Longoria.   The right person left AGAIN...this time, the woeful reformed-drug-addict who let everyone know his crack habit kept him from being selected for the show each of the past three or four seasons.   I'm not quite sure how he qualified for the show, however, because his designs -- and the effort/imagination he put into them -- have been dreadful.  Last night's challenge was to use newspaper (along with magic marker colors and glue and tape) to create fashion of the designers' choice.

There were some very interesting fashions, but none were better IMO than Christopher's.  Christopher is the one designer in the competition who is self-taught without benefit of any school training in design.  What's interesting about him is that he absorbs much of what he sees and hears the other designers discussing/doing.  He's learning about techniques and what they are called.  He is also doing some AMAZING designing of his own.  Last night, the judges chose Irina who designed a "trenchcoat" that didn't look like a trenchcoat, but that did have a great deal of style and charm. Each week, I get the sense that Heidi is "spreading around" the wealth when it comes to naming winners.  The top two or three are always very good, but I don't think they always select the "best" for the winner, especially if the best was done by a previous winner.  This egalitarian approach is fine up to a point, but the herd is thinning and the judges will have to be a bit more judicious in the coming weeks about what they deem "best" (I keep remembering Michael Knight from a couple of seasons back....he won week after week, it seemed...at least four weeks in all...and in the finals, his runway collection seemed to have been designed for crack whores on the streets of Atlanta).   Oh, well....

SPOILAGE Potential ended....

And the new SURVIVOR looks to be great fun...and I am so looking forward to THE AMAZING RACE next week!

On top of that it was wonderful to see a new episode of THE OFFICE...like JRand, I have not become attached to PARKS AND RECREATION....I think it just tries a little too hard.

Time will tell if I glom onto GLEE and MELROSE PLACE...If I feel I do not have enough time and too much TV to watch, then I will likely cut them off my schedule and save them for summer reruns.

And I am back from meeting a certain visitor to Philly for lunch.  I wish I had picked an eatery that was perhaps not quite as down home as the Down Home Diner, but it served its purpose as a getting-acquainted place.  It was really wonderful to have actually met this visitor in person.

Aww, Ben. I'm sorry to hear that. The oatmeal didn't work this time?

Well, I'm still eating oatmeal but I've slacked off here and there and with high cholesterol running in my family if I don't eat and exercise and maintain it can shoot up very easily. When I'm stressed I go for the cheeseburger and fries and cake with butter cream frosting and other delicious things. I wish the shoes would drop. That doesn't mean there won't still be stress, but at least we will know more about the stress-inducing events.

I watched PROJECT RUNWAY while I ate lunch.

I agree with DR ROn that I thought Christopher should have won. Ib fact, after winning the first week, he hasn't won again, but all of his designs have been gorgeous. I was surprised they went with the trench coat since they did have some quibbles about its length. It was different, but I thought CHristopher's was exactly what he said he wanted it to be: a showstopper.

And the right person did indeed go home. In years past, there have been a large number of talnted male designers. This year, the women on the whole are much more creative and expert. (But I'd love to see Christopher win the whole show.)

Thanks for the info, Larry.  There are so many shows that are sooooooo damned long...and there are some that can be broken up into three acts in appropriately places and audience could have a little more of a break.

Then I watched WRONG TURN on Blu-ray. It's the same stalker/slasher movie that has been made a hundred times. Sure, there were a couple of scares, and the gore level was barely tolerable for me (I have a pretty low threshold for being able to stand gore.) Looks like most of the budget went into designing some really grisly make-up for the three cretins who are the killers.

A friend of mine just sent me an e-mail of what is supposed to the thirty best pictures of the year from National Geographic.  There is no mention of what year these are, so I suppose it could be last year or the year before.  It doesn't really matter, except I thought that I had read that National Geographic was going to include the "Banff Squirrel" in this year's photos.

Anyway, great photos, but I think this may be my favorite.

Does that mean they are region free??

On no that wasn't me. I like Mr. McGlinn's work. I was listening to Show Boat this afternoon.

I have many of his recordings: Anything Goes, Thomas Hampson's Cole Porter album, Sitting Pretty, Broadway Showstoppers, Brigadoon, Kern, Gershwin, Porter Overtures, Annie Get Your Gun (Original Broadway Version), Kurt Weill on Broadway, Kiss Me Kate and Lambert Wilson  (I believe people here stated they didn't like it.) There maybe a few others.

I think I said I wasn't crazy over Kiri Sings Gershwin. I just thought her vocal stylings were wrong for the material

Back from a way too long vocal session - it doesn't help to have people in the room who don't understand the recording vibe, and despite the singers rehearsing yesterday, none of them were really secure, so it was pretty endless.  I think we got what we needed but it took two hours longer than the longest I thought we'd be going.  Therefore, I got none of my afternoon stuff done.  Very annoying.  Add to that that at around two I was checking stuff on my iPhone when the phone literally just went black.  I pushed the circle button - nothing.  Power - nothing.  Dead as a doornail.  I'm on the phone with Apple now - they're troubleshooting but so far nothing is working - very annoying.

I am drunk on my ass. After the memorial, which ended at 4:30, there was a reception for performers and speakers at Il Bottino on 24th and 10th Avenue. The hors d'ouevres were tasty, the bar was free and I drank too much. I got to spend quality time with many wonderful glorious people today. As to the tribute, it was moving, funny, touching, outrageous and very sentimental. Jason Graae sang and camped his way outrageously through Jerome Kern's funny "Napoleon," principal cellist of the Met Orchestra Jerry Grossman played Victor Herbert's "Legende" for cello and piano beautifully, his wife the wonderful soprano Korliss Uecker sang the hell out of my favorite Victor Herbert song "Barney O'Flynn." Teresa Stratas, looking fantastic at 71, talking about false friends who drop you, told about John McGlinn calling her every day after the surgery that lost her voice, never to say "you'll get it back," but to talk to her about everything but her anguish and how much she respected that and his concerns for her. As soon as Rebecca Luker and George Dvorsky began "Till the Clouds Roll By," I teared up, my friend Betty Auman talking about John and reading a letter from the ailing Russell Warner in Seattle totally lost it. It was all quite lovely and I hope the audience who was there fro the 2.5 hours had a wonderful time.

So, now I'm drunk and ready for bed.

Took a nap as soon as I got home and woke up just before niece Lauren arrived to join us for pizza dinner and a lesson in iMovie from her cousin Rob.  She's on the road now and I'm trying to stay awake for "I'm home safe" text message.

Does that mean they are region free??

Yes, that is what I have been told.

Thanks so much for the report on the service, DR Elmore. Sounds like everything came off well.

I did not go out this evening. I had been fighting aches and soreness all afternoon, and when I started dressing and my hand started throbbing, I just took it as a sign I should leave.

It was a good decision as I was most uncomfortable for much of the evening. I wouldn't have been able to concentrate.

They couldn't give me an appointment at the Apple Store until Monday - I just went over there with my case number.  I got a guy to help me right away and he got the phone to power on by holding the circle button and the power button down for ten seconds at the same time.  Why Apple support didn't know to do that is anyone's guess.  They suggested I do a system restore via iTunes, which is what I'm doing now - they assured me that I wouldn't lose any settings.

Since my hand was giving me fits today and tonight, I decided on comfort viewing: simply rewatching episodes of shows I've seen so I wouldn't have to keep up with intricacies of the plot and could just sort of veg out.

I began with my CASTLE episode of the night, the wonderful one with a kidnapped little girl and the return of Beckett's former boy friend played by the incredibly handsome Bailey Chase.

And since I enjoy star Nathan Fillion so much, I pulled FIREFLY off the shelf and watched the penultimate epsode of that show. This is the one where the guys are asked to defend a brothel under attack by a land baron who claims one of the girls is carrying his baby. The baron is played by Fredric Lane, another favorite of mine.

Then, I thought I'd watch some BURN NOTICE on Blu-ray. I hadn't rewatched any of these episode since I reviewed the set some months ago.

I watched two episodes. One had Michael mixed up with the Russian mob who were hiding a bunch of girls being used to extort money from their relatives. The other was the one where Michael's mother guilted him into attending counseling with her. Of course, once they got there, he turned the tables on her and she ended up feeling self conscious.

Good night!

Didn't quite save everything - whatever was in my iTunes on the phone is gone and I can't figure out how to manually tell it what I want back - can someone help with simple instructions so I don't have to get a headache looking for it on the Internet?

Hmm...I watched GLEE tonight, but I really didn't care much for it.

I am going to give MELROSE PLACE  few more episodes before I decide on it. I like the storylines, but I wish the characters weren't all so young...even the police detectives on last night's episdode looked like they were about 18 years old.

I am boiling a chicken thigh and will soon resume my DVD of classic science fiction trailers.

I love old movie trailers.

It's eight o'clock and I should be at home!  So, that's where I'm going. :)

I set my DVR to record a whole bunch of things today.  I hope that it all got recorded.  I don't remember how much room was available on my DVR and hope that there wasn't too much to record...some of the oldest shows that I'd saved could get deleted!

Until later!

But before I go...

Saw The Young Dubliners at Friday's on the Promenade- an outdoor concert series - $2 gets you in.  They were great and I saw a number of friends there.   It was a good time.  Now I need to sleep so I can get up and out of the house by about 7:00 AM to go do my walk for Steve

I wish I had never let two of my friends talk me into checking out Farm Town on Facebook.  Good grief, I just spent about an hour harvesting someone else's virtual crops.  This is insanity.

Although if you are on Farm Town, I'd love it if you'd send me a pig.  They crack me up when they roll on their sides and go to sleep

I'm watching today's "Bonnie Hunt Show."  Earlier tonight, I watched last week's "Defying Gravity."  On today's "Good Morning America," the new movie cast of "Fame" was on and Neal Patrick Harris was on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." :)

Now, all I have left are "Psych" (just started it), then "Mad Men," then the last two episodes of "Glee."
