Well, you've read the notes, the notes had news, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently like two ships that pass in the MOOnlight.

The man behind the curtain - the REAL Snow White:
As a teen, Marge Champion did scenes as Snow White for Disney animators, who traced footage of her to create the movements of the character. (Walt Disney Co.)

LATIMES (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-classic-hollywood30-2009sep30,0,4877471.story)
Quote
Marge Champion still has the dance moves

The 90-year-old star of movies, theater and TV and the model for Snow White is the subject of an upcoming documentary, 'Keep Dancing,' with latest dance partner Donald Saddler.

She says the process of playing Snow White was simple. "When Snow White was running through the forest and scared to death, they had ropes hanging from a clothesline so I would be pushing them aside," recalls Champion. "If there was a bed where Show White had to go pray, they had a cot there so I could kneel beside it. It was always very rudimentary and very hot lights, because they wanted as strong a contrast as possible."

Every frame of her footage was rotoscoped -- traced -- by the animators. "They didn't use every frame, but they couldn't get the movement or my moves or my eyes without it."

Champion also went on to model for the Blue Fairy in 1940's "Pinocchio" and the Dancing Hippo in "Fantasia."

Wednesday morning greetings!  Must be the cool fall weather - I slept like a rock and woke up at 7am, very refreshed.

Today is Rob's day off from school and we're going to work upstairs, clearing him out of the guest room and back into his own room.  We're scheduled to house one of the Indonesian graduate students from Ohio University who's coming for Middfest.  He's a photographer and will be here Saturday-Sunday.

Good morning, all! I'm beginning to get a bit anxious about my health insurance because the recording payment I expected to help cover the bill has not yet shown up in my mail and time is running out. I am not happy about this at all.

Today, I have to call my pharmacy for more meds and possibly make a trip to the NYPL. Everything depends on a Fed Ex package of the CDs from the Life Begins At 8:40 reading that should arrive today from the Library of Congress. It's 7 CDs of material that I need to burn for all of the New York people involved, including the conductor I think should be replaced. He's been making moves about the next phase of the project and I've been avoiding the issue, mostly through the wonderful unfabricated excuse of FINIAN'S RAINBOW deadlines.

The first thing this morning is to have my oatmeal and clean up this dump.

Oh bk, bk. I thought you were starting to get the hang of some of Blu-ray's modus operandi:

All Warners Blu-rays start without the menu. If you don't believe me, put in one of the Harry Potters or THE DARK KNIGHT (if you still have them) and see if they don't behave exactly the same. You just know when you have a Warner Blu-ray that you're going to have to cope with this in all likelihood.

There are TWO menu buttons on your remote. Find the one marked "Top Menu" and you can pull up a menu while the movie is playing and make adjustments. However, if it's the audio you want to change, I use the audio button on my Samsung remote which brings up the audio menu and you just arrow key your way to what you want.

If neither "Menu" nor "Top Menu" can get you away from ads or trailers or disclaimers (sometimes they can, sometimes they can't; every studio seems to author this stuff differently), I use the chapter skip button. Even if I have to hit it three or four times, it's still quuicker than using fast forward.

Just a few pointers.

I'm glad I finished the Sherlock Holmes Case-Book set yesterday since I can give my leftover time this morning to THE UNIT. I'm going to need every minute today to watch as many episodes as possible. I want to be able to watch GLEE tonight before I shut everything off downstairs and come upstairs for my nightly internet surf.

I also have yesterday's soaps to scan through and I'll watch last night's NCIS; LA while I eat lunch. I hope the show begins defining some of those background characters so we can differentiate their duties. I remember three guys in the control room, but don't remember their names or their exact functions on the show. The original NCIS did a great job from the very beginning deliniating the characters and their jobs in the unit.

Tonight premieres the other two comedies in ABC's four comedy/two hour block. (MODERN FAMILY and COUGAR TOWN premeired last week). The new shows this week are Kelsey Grammer's new HANK and Patricia Heaton's THE MIDDLE. The latter has gotten better reviews than the former. I really have no interest in either. I'll be recording MODERN FAMILY only this week.

It looks like the filming of the James L Brooks movie that was setting up across the street from my office occurred last night.  They were wrapping up cables and stowing away equipment back into the tractor trailers as I drove in this morning.

I watched JULIA MISBEHAVES last night on TCM.  It's a movie that starts out promisingly but then veers in several different directions before ending in a silly mess (literally and figuratively.)  I guess even The Lion had its share of dopey movies.

Next week at long last Fox is releasing the fifth season of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW. It's been years since the release of season four, and season five, when Rhoda is gone and Sue Ann becomes a much more integral part of the show (enough for Betty White to win back-to-back Emmys for seasons five and six), is one of my favorites. (Don't get me wrong; I loved Rhoda, but the Sue Ann-Mary rivalry is always hilarious to me).

It's a helpful bit of knowledge to know, especially since the older Warners Blu-rays don't always default to the best audio track. (The Harry Potters nor the Batman films don't; they default to lossy DOlby DIgital instead of uncompressed PCM or lossless Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA.)

THE ROAD BUILDER/NIGHT DIGGER was most entertaining last night.  Mr Bernard Herrmann's score was the second best part of the movie.  Introducing Mr Nicholas Clay did indeed divest himself of his clothes twice.....once completely to commit a murder....and a second time to his undies to entice Miss Patricia Neal (it worked).

I am at the end of the grace period because I had to fork out $3000 last month for estimated IRS and state income tax. There's no way with my current debt from being down a month that I could hand out an addtional $2000+ for health insurance. I honestly thought I would be paid by now for the recording.

I am galloping from one crisis to another this morning. When I went in to brush my teeth, I found plaster chips all over the floor and toilet, and when I looked up, the bathroom ceiling above the toilet was dark and wet from a leak. That meant finding the super, who takes care of four buildings on the block for my cheapass landlord, and getting him to look at the problem. Of course, the tenant above me isn't home so we have no idea if the leak is in his bathroom, which is most likely. I do  not want the ceiling to fall in today. Although it's certainly a metaphor for my life at the moment.

In other news...

The living/dining room area and kitchen are (still) a mess - everything still needs to be put back in its place, and my bedroom is also a bit of a hodgepodge this morning too from all of the overflow stuff from the living and dining room.  So... Guess what I'll be doing today?

Cruising the reservoir?

It's too cold today for that.

Aren't you suppose to poke a small hole into the wet area to prevent it all from collapsing?

elmore - I know my Oxford plan has a 30-day grace period from the official "due date" marked on the monthly bill they send; maybe your insurance co. has a similar grace period??

I am at the end of the grace period because I had to fork out $3000 last month for estimated IRS and state income tax. There's no way with my current debt from being down a month that I could hand out an addtional $2000+ for health insurance. I honestly thought I would be paid by now for the recording.

Have you called & inquired if they will give you an extension?  With the economy the way it is it is possible something can be worked out.

The saga continues; now i'm embroiled in a situation with the NYC Gay Men's Chorus. In the 1980s I wrote a piece for their chamber choir, "Appalachian Carols," which I dedicated to my Dad. In 1990 or so, my publisher took the carols into their catalogue, and about four years ago I revised them before they were typeset. I consider this version definitive.

The Chorus, without advising me last month, decided to perform the carols in their holiday concert, which makes me happy, but they had someone set the original copy they had into type and the Chorus is rehearsing the earlier version. I'm disturbed because it's a copy I would not have allowed to be digitized and all my inquiries about unauthorized illegal copies getting passed around has me very perturbed. I've asked them to stamp the copies "DO NOT DUPLICATE" or with something implying their illegality but my inquiries to the Chorus on what's goign on are being brushed off. I am not happy, and, while I have no wish to back the Chorus into a corner, I don't like decisions made about my property without my involvement.

It takes two or three weeks to get immunity. When is your trip?

Can't you just walk in to your doctor and have them give you the shot, since you have an appointment scheduled?

My DH waited until his doctor appointment to get a flu shot, only to find out they were out when he got there. So he ended up going to Walgreens anyway.

DR Matt H thank you for the heads up on the new shows tonight.

You're welcome. I will be very curious to see how they do in the ratings. The WEdnesday at 8-9 p.m. time period is the one hour during the week that no show has a completely domineering hold over the other programming. BONES used to dominate, but then Fox moved it to Thursdays. I'll be curious to see how things shake out there.

I had time to watch two UNIT episodes before I started fixing lunch. And as it turned out, it was a two part episode. Unfortunately it was a rather silly mission to rescue Dennis Haysbert's daughter (a soldier) after she had been captured and taken to Syria.

One of the show's weaknesses is inconsistency in storytelling. A really riveting mission will be followed by a lame, unbelievable one.
Title: Re: THE SHIPPING NEWS
Post by: Matt H. on September 30, 2009, 01:37:47 PM
While I ate lunch I watched last night's NCIS: LA. The show is not growing on me. I don't find LL Cool J as ingratiating as any of the characters on NCIS. Neither the M.E. nor the psychologist have the fun and eccentricity of Ducky or Abby. And I'm not digging Linda Hunt much either.

BTW, she played a similar part in one of the UNIT episodes I watched this afternoon. No doubt this gave CBS the idea to plug her into NCIS since she wasn't in the pilot broadcast last year during NCIS.

When I was growing up, Arnolds Park Amusement Park on West Okoboji had a great fun house wiht a huge wooden sugar bowl where you played king of the mountain as it spun around, a wooden barrel that you tried to walk through as it spun around and a great wooden slide.  They have been in storage since the fun house was torn down in the 80s.  Today they were taken out of storage and will be part of a new park.  Liability will prevent the barrel from rolling and the bowl from spinning, but they will be back.    that makes me smile :)

GLEE - hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....I am not a Kristen Chenowith fan or supporter, so there were some really irritating moments for me.  I really don't remember her singing through her nose so much....maybe it was a character choice.

But anyway....I am not sure how much longer I can stay with the show....the kids can have it.

I have gotten through episode 16 today of THE UNIT. That leaves six episodes for tomorrow which I should easily be able to accomplish. There is this unseen enemy that turned on a factory full of chlorine gas to poison a small community where our heroes live. This was a ridiculous episode.

When we first moved to Ashland the park had a wooden barrel that spun.  It looked rather old & was torn down when the playground was updated.  We miss the barrel.  The rest of the playground looks great.

Yes, I did like it. I thought it sounded like Kristin Chenoweth. If that's what you call nasal, well, that's what I call Kristin. I've never heard her sound any other way.

I really liked tonight's episode of "Glee" too.  However...

I know it's the "sound" that the "kidz" are used to hearing nowadays, but all of the processing and auto-tune-ing of the vocals still bugs me.

I also got the Blu-ray version of MONSOON WEDDING from Criterion, but since it doesn't come out until October 20th, I won't worry about getting to it any time soon. And when I do that will be an easy day since I've already seen and written up the movie and the the rest of the contents on standard DVD.

Muy YUMMERS!

I, too, enjoyed tonight's Glee, but I have lots of problems with most of the material they have the high school kids singing.  The song that Kristin performed with the choir had lyrics that I found unsuitable for a school performance.  And, if they're doing the stage version of Cabaret, why were they singing "Maybe This Time"?  I only remember it from the movie.

DR Ginny - Apparently, the school that the "Gleeks" are attending is very progressive. ;)  -Although, the song choices do reflect what is "out there", and what the kids are singing today.  -There are even choral arrangements of Beyoncé's "Single Ladies Dance" available.

As for "Maybe This Time" - it was incorporated into the Donmar/Roundabout revival, and is commonly interpolated into the stage version nowadays. -As is "The Money Song" and "Mein Herr".
