TOD:

I got my first apartment about 6 months after I graduated from college.  It was about 5 miles from my parent's house - the top floor of a house converted to rental units, and right on the water, Long Island sound.  A beautiful view!   It was pretty small, but I loved it!  The other tenants weren't particularly friendly, and in the summer it became unbearably hot.  But it was mine, all mine.  It is hard to go back to living with your parents after you've had the freedom of being "on your own" in college.  Even though you now have to fend for yourself re: food & shelter.  A very interesting time in a young adult's life!

I lived there for about a year and a half before I met my DH and eventually moved in with him.

The main server was just brought down so I can't work on the Ford Foundation for about 15 minutes. I'm listening to 110 in the Shade (OBC) and I'll surf a bit and drink my coffee.

It's still rainy and cool here in New York. Glad to hear that Ginny and Richard got off OK.

A dorm room on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota was my actual very first place away from home. While I was living there I met and began dating someone and we moved in together (it only lasted through that school year, ending just before the end of my sophomore year).

I lived in a house with some other actors in the Twin Cities area in Maplewood (a suburb of Saint Paul). Eventually everyone moved out (there were 5 total) except for the house owner and me. I had a car then. We had a great time, a straight dancer from Chicago and a gay boy form Coon Rapids. I left when I decided to move to New York and he sold the house soon after and moved into Minneapolis.

I watched WHATEVER WORKS about a week ago, and whereas I don't think it's one of Woody's worst, I certainly don't think it's anywhere near his best.

Although I found his character very unlikable during the first half of the picture, I think that Larry David channels Woody's on-screen persona better than any other actor in the past.  He has the Woody Allen dialogue rhythm.

The thing I liked best about the film was Evan Rachel Wood.  Whatever his faults, Woody does write a great "bimbo" character.

I'd give the movie a C+.

TOD:

I moved out of my parents' home in Seattle about four months after I graduated from college, once I learned that I would not be drafted.

I drove down to Los Angeles, rented a single apartment in Hollywood just off the corner of Fountain and Sweetzer for $95.00.  That was in 1963.

Loretta Young lived across the street, and about a month or so after I moved in, Karen Kupsinut (Irv's actress daughter) was murdered a half block away from my place.

I loved being on my own.  I stayed there for 3 months, then moved to a place on Normandie (near 6th) where Barbara Payton was a neighbor.

Good morning, all! One more day to go before the opening night, and i am getting excited about the whole megillah. I'm happy to learn that DR Ginny and Richard are safely home but saddened by the loss of aitches in DRvixmom's household.

Last night I had weird dreams including one about the ass who runs the Signature Theatre in Virginia and I'm still not sure if the last strange dream involving twins was part of the same trauma or something else.

This morning, I have a trip to Toyland, followed with lunch with George Dvorsky. I have some things from the McGlinnventory to return to him and we'll have a chance to gossip, dish, and catch up. After that, I will get myself back here to work on the Volume 2 notes for BABES IN TOYLAND. A conductor in town, David Lewis, and I have been playing phone tag. I hope today we can actually converse a bit.

I took too long to leave home but the time spent was great preparation for living and working in Manhattan.

My work project today is completely dependent on what arrives in the mail. I have nothing in the review stack but a HUGE number of discs coming, many of them multi-disc sets: Hitchcock thrillers (4), NATIONAL PARKS on Blu-ray (6 discs), ZORRO seasons 1 and 2 (78 episodes plus four one-hour episodes), plus CGI cartoon features ICE AGE 3, UP!, and MONSTERS, INC. all on Blu-ray. What a load of discs!

And I have nothing on the DVR in terms of television to watch while eating lunch, so I'll dive back into a PERRY MASON episode. I'm not on disc 2 in the first season set.

GLEE is not on tonight due to the World Series.

CBS' CRIMINAL MINDS and CSI: NY are reruns tonight. (Sweeps start tomorrow, so you won't be seeing reruns for most shows for the next three-four weeks).

ABC's comedy block (which includes the sensational MODERN FAMILY) are new episodes tonight!

DR Ron Pulliam - Has the Bay Bridge reopened yet?
Title: Re: WINDY
Post by: Charles Pogue on October 28, 2009, 07:50:15 AM
So what constitutes moving out of your parents' house?  I think I still had stuffed stored there until I finally got married.  I guess my first place was on North Broadway in Lexington, Kentucky, after the year I graduated, when I was building up a stake to go somewhere else.   It was a third floor apartment of a converted old house that I shared with my erstwhile theatre arts chum, Roger Leasor.  He had the turrett room, I had a strange cozy nook with a slanting roof.  We had a spacious living room, small kitchen, and a sizable bathroom with only a shower, no tub.  Very Bohemian.  I think we paid eighty bucks.

My next place was in Odessa, Texas, in an apartment above a converted garage, behind the house of the lady who founded the theatre I was working at -- The Globe of the Great Southwest.  It was free, came with the gig, but she was a very Christian lady and allowed no visitors of the female persuasion.  I managed to smuggle a few past her anyway.  Oddly enough, she kept trying to get me to go to church by telling me, they had a lot of "nice, pretty young girls" there...Imagine that, pimping for Christ.

In Dallas, I started out in a small efficiency with no kitchen, only a small refrigerator.  Then I graduated to a two-bedroom duplex, rooming with Larry Drake.  Since one or the other of us was usually on the road, it was like have the place to oneself most of the time.

When I moved to LA, I started in a spacious efficiency with a huge kitchen on Beachwood Avenue.  It cost $205 and allowed pets, so Hotspur and I took it.  The day we moved in, I watched from my window as they began to tear down the old Hollywood sign and rebuild the new one.  I figured that was a good omen. I had a lot of my stuff from Home shipped out here.

When Larry Drake came out a year later, we rented a bungalow together on Ivar, right below Marie Dressler's old home (now apartments) across the street was the Alta Nido, the apartments that William Holden came out of when he was ducking the car repossessors in SUNSET BOULEVARD.  And right across the street from us was an apartment building Nathaniel West had lived in when he wrote DAY OF THE LOCUST...the bungalows we lived in, there since 1926, were probably the ones he was writing about in that novel.

After Larry moved out to live with a grilfriend, Julieanne and I lived here until I bought my first house up in the old Hollywoodland development.

TOD:   My first "place" away from my parents' house  -- outisde of college dormitories and Navy barracks -- was in Vicenza, Italy.  I was stationed there in 1973 and was one of two Navy men assigned to this U.S. Army post which was the headquarters for the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force (or, SETAF).  The Army was the "host military branch" for the Armed Forces Radio Service in Italy and Vicenza was the only radio station for the armed forces in Italy.

I lived in a barracks room for about a month, but finally found a nice third-floor two-bedroom apartment on "the economy" (which is the term we military types overseas used to refer to living among the host locals).  The kitchen was small, the living area was a nice size and there was a dining room.  All the rooms fanned out around an entry foyer.  It was never fancy....I signed for Army furniture that was already there from the previous tenants, and I bought, or had made, some shelving and other stuff I needed.

But it was mine.  It was a place where I taught myself how to cook.  It was a place where I could listen to anything on my stereo that I wanted to listen to.  I had to answer no questions or explain myself to anyone.   And, of course, it meant I could have anyone over any time I wanted to.   I had some nice get-togethers with friends and co-workers.  I developed a taste for Italian wine and for Puccini and spent many hours on one of my two balconies sipping wine and relishing "Turandot".

I had a commanding view of farm lands from the balcony off my living room and from the balcony off my bedroom (front and back).  I could see the rooftops of the Army post from the living room balcony.  From the bedroom balcony I had a view of the city to the far right, lots of fields everywhere in the immediate vicinity and a mountain was on the other side of the fields, atop which was a monastery.  In the middle of the fields behind my apartment sat a building called "La Rotonda".  It was designed by architect Andrea Palladio...and was the inspiration for the central portion of Jefferson's "Monticello."  I arrived in Vicenza in March 1973 and was in my apartment by April.  This was a season for fog in the Veneto region.  And when it wasn't at ground level, it seemed to hover over everything like clouds.  It is very much like it is in the Bay Area, except that here the fog normally burns off by late afternoon.   There, in the 1970s, we didn't get a burn-off...possibly because of the heavy industrialization of northern Italy.  On the first clear, fog-free day I lived in that apartment, I discovered that I had a view of the Dolomites (the Italian alps) and that they were immense, although far away.   The skyline of the city of Vicenza looked amazing set against those snow-covered peaks.

I was a five-minute drive -- or a 10-minute bicycle ride -- from the Army post and my workplace.  The major distance between us was corn fields...and in the foggy evenings or mornings, riding my bicycle on the road between those fields was extremely eerie.  I kept remembering "Harvest Home" and wondering if something would jump out and get me.

My move out was a bit of a family trauma.  My mother was not especially easy to be around, and I simply up and moved out one night when my Dad was out of town on military business and my Mom was out playing bridge.  I moved into a sweet little basement two bedroom apartment in a converted Victorian in SLC's Avenues neighborhood, with my girlfriend at the time.  It was scary (I was only 17), and I still remember lying on the floor (we didn't even have a bed) that first night wondering what I would do now.  ;)  Several decades later, I'm still wondering.  ;)

TOD:

I went back home to live with my parents after college so I could get my teaching career going and I could work on my masters degree. (It was definitely in the wind that a BA or BS might not hold up in the years to come in terms of keeping one's job. Believe it or not, teachers were VERY plentiful when I got out of school, and one had to be really lucky to secure a teaching position in public school then.)

I didn't begin working on my masters until after  my first year of teaching. When I finally got it and had saved enough money to go off on my own, I moved into a one bedroom garden apartment in CHarlotte (about 40 miles from my parents' home).

I loved that apartment for my first dwelling away from home. Being an apartment, I only had to keep it clean. Maintenance worries (burst pipes, cracks in the plaster, etc.) were all handled by the property management, so it was a great way for me to live away but not have to worry about upkeep of property apart from keeping the place clean.

I was on the first floor of a two story/four apartment unit. I had a quiet upstairs neighbor and a lovely elderly couple who lived next door (brought to Charlotte working for PTL, the relgious network owned by Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker) who would come over when they weren't slaving at PTL and listen to me play the piano or just talk. They were only there a year of the two years I lived there since PTL took them for all their retirement savings and they could no longer afford the rent ($190 per month!)

I did agree to move back home several years later after my father had a near fatal heart attack and my Mother begged me to come back and help with chores.  In return they pretty much just ceded the entire basement of their semi-palatial manse in the mountains outside of SLC to me.  It was probably my junior year in college, which due to my early entrance and qualifying testing out of basics, means I was probably around 18, and I have very fond memories of driving my mother crazy listening to a lot of Richard Strauss whilst I followed along on the orchestral scores.  :)

Well, that's a REALLY interesting discussion.  I think Gwen Verdon would not get a callback today - they wouldn't understand that voice or her look, because, well, she doesn't look like anyone else and there just aren't unique-looking people trodding the boards these days.  They're all interchangeable so that when someone leaves a show they're replaced easily.  Tommy Tune?  Too TALL.  Too SKINNY.

In late summer of 1983 I moved out of my dad and step-mom's home in White City right into a second floor apartment between Main and Lithia in Ashland. Can't recall the exact street. It was within walking distance to my work at what was then the Mark Anthony Hotel

and a short drive to the Ashland Bi-Mart, where I also worked part time.

The apartment was a two bedroom, 1 bath with the ceiling radiated heat (really dumb idea). I can't find a photo of the place, but it was a dump built in the late 60s or 70s which hopefully have been torn down by now. It was in a nice old neighborhood, however, but the apartments were quite damp and not well insulated.

My roomy was a straight guy named Howard who was the night desk clerk at the Mark Anthony. Eventually one of his buddies was sharing the apartment with us and then later Boo Boo kitty, who just waltzed into the apartment one day and never left.

I was only in the apartment for a few months and in January or February of 1984 I packed my belongings and Boo Boo into my 1976 aquamarine colored AMC Matador and headed to Salem.

I chatted with my grand neice Taylor (age 7) last night about what her Halloween costume would be. She is dressing up as Cleopatra, who she has just learned about in school.

Here 4 year old brother Benny is going as Thomas the Train Engine.

Taylor suggested that Bosco should dress up for Halloween and go out and bring candy back for me.

On our Monday afternoon trip to Strand Books with Anthony I purchased 5 books for my Dawn Powell project.  We headed right to Fed Ex/Kinko's, where I boxed them up and shipped them to myself.  They just arrived, less than 48 hours after we left them there.

Good news for fans of classic Universal films (like me!):

Turner Classic Movies & Universal Studios Home Entertainment
Team Up to Offer Made-to-Order DVDs of Rare Films

Digitally Remastered Titles Never Available Before on DVD to Include Extensive Features from TCM Archives
New Titles Available Each Quarter, Including Five Memorable Horror Titles,Three Early Cary Grant Vehicles and a Timeless Holiday ClassicTCM to Present Special Telecasts of the FilmsTurner Classic Movies (TCM) and Universal Studios Home Entertainment (USHE) have entered into an extensive new partnership to offer classic movie fans rare vintage films, all digitally remastered, on DVD on a made-to-order basis. The TCM Vault Collection Presented by Universal marks USHE's first foray into the manufactured-on-demand (MOD) arena. TCM began offering MOD featuring lost titles from the RKO library.

TCM and USHE are working to remaster a number of great titles never before available on DVD, with several never available on home video at all. The first titles made available include five chilling horror films, three early Cary Grant pictures and the unsung 1940 holiday classic Remember the Night, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray and scripted by the great Preston Sturges. The films will be made available by request on DVD via TCM.com for the first time during the fourth quarter of 2009. TCM host Robert Osborne will provide introductions for selected titles, which will also include supplemental materials compiled by TCM and extensive material from the TCM archives. In addition, TCM will present exclusive premieres of the movies over the next six months.

"Many terrific films have been unavailable on home video for far too long, especially the holiday classic Remember the Night," Osborne said. "It's wonderful that today's movie fans will be able to enjoy these rare movies. TCM and Universal have worked hard to restore them digitally and provide historical context, bonus content and behind-the-scenes information, something DVD collectors are sure to appreicate. I'm proud to be part of this great project with TCM and Universal."

For Universal, the agreement is a great way to reach avid film fans. "Universal is very proud of its prestigious collection of Hollywood screen gems," said Craig Kornblau, president, Universal Studios Home Entertainment. "Like us, TCM is deeply dedicated to honoring Hollywood 's golden age. This collaboration presents the perfect opportunity to share Universal's rich cinematic legacy and celebrate vintage works with classic film fans."

The launch of TCM /Universal DVDs will be divided into three initial releases:
Universal Cult Horror Collection (films also available as singles )
DVD Availability: Oct. 31
TCM Premiere of Murders in the Zoo: Oct. 31
Suggested Retail Price: Collection - $49.99; Individual Titles - $19.99
This collection will include five rarely seen horror gems from the Universal vault, most appearing on home video for the first time. Special features include over a hundred photos, posters and lobby cards, trivia, articles and more.

Murders in the Zoo (1933) - Censors had a heyday with this horror film about a zoologist and sportsman who uses his zoo animals to kill his wife's lovers. Lionel Atwill plays the villain, with Kathleen Burke as his wife, a young Randolph Scott as the hero and the ever lovable Charles Ruggles providing comic relief as the zoo's press agent. Among the men playing Burke's doomed lovers is John Lodge, who later left acting to enter politics, becoming governor of Vermont .

Mad Doctor of Market Street (1942) - Lionel Atwill plays a mad scientist who places people into suspended animation and then revives them. When he is accused of murder following the death of one of his subjects, he flees on a ship, becomes stranded on a tropical island and soon becomes revered as a god by the natives. Una Merkel, Nat Pendleton and Claire Dodd co-star.

The Strange Case of Dr. RX (1942) - A mysterious killer bumps off acquitted murderers who have all been represented by the same laywer, played by Samuel S. Hinds. Lionel Atwill, Patric Knowles and Anne Gwynne co-star, with Shemp Howard (on hiatus from his work with The Three Stooges) providing comic relief.

The Mad Ghoul (1943) - This creepy tale follows a mad professor, played by George Zucco, who has discovered an ancient Egyptian gas that turns anyone who sniffs it into a heart-eating zombie. David Bruce plays the doctor's assistant who gets dosed with the gas and goes on a murderous rampage. Evelyn Ankers and Robert Armstrong co-star.

House of Horrors (1946) - The legendary Rondo Hatton, whose acromegaly deformed his face and made him a frequent Hollywood villain, marked one of his last roles with this offbeat film. Martin Kosleck plays a mad artist who, after saving Hatton and making a bust of his face, uses the disfigured hulk to murder art critics. Hatton died of a heart attack the year this film was released.

George is soon off to play Captain von Trapp in Houston for the holiday and we promised to see each other in 2010 when he returns.

Hi, DR Jose - how are you feeling today?

Hi, DR Ginny - Good question.  I woke up feeling OK, but after about an hour I started feeling a little "off".  My throat is still a little itchy, but my ears feel fine today... Although, a few minutes ago, I could feel the barometric pressure drop - at least it felt that way in my head.  I don't feel sick, more like "not sure".

And you?

-Alas, the cold rain that's been falling all day here in NYC hasn't really helped matters either.  Some sunlight would be nice to see.

DR Jose - I still have a scratchy throat and my feet are still blistered, but otherwise I'm OK.  The weather map in our paper this morning made it look like yesterday's rain just sat down in NYC and stayed for a while.

It's sunny here in SW Ohio and I'm about to venture down to Trenton to pick up my engagement ring.

TOD

Let’s see:

At age 18 I left home on Navy Active duty.
One year on a Destroyer followed by four years at the Naval Academy.
Graduated on Wednesday, Married on Friday, moved into first apartment in Norfolk Va on Monday.

So, when exactly was I “on my own”?

The closest “on my own” living came in 1975-76 when I started an 18 month stint of splitting my time between CA and RI.

The government really wanted Hughes to loan me to them for a project, but I really didn’t want to go; saying “no” was politically unwise so I said “Yes, If…” and laid out a string of outrageous requirements: fully furnished housing and leased car plus expenses in Rhode Island, full per diem for the duration, fully paid trips back to CA once a month, paid gardener to care for my CA home. Etc – which the Government accepted! OOPS.

I ended up living on the beach in a small A-Frame chalet on a spit of land jutting into Hog Bay (a branch of the Narragansett Bay). The owners who were leaving to go cruising on their boat left their dog behind to cope for himself (he had been a stray); the neighborhood bullies had picked on him and shot out one eye with a BB gun. Tramp, a Golden mix, adopted me at once – it took him 30 seconds to learn to be an “inside” dog when I was around. When I went back to CA for my 1-2 week trips, I left a huge tub of dog chow in an alcove under one of the overhangs – the bay made for a regular source of water. I think Tramp could hear the car coming up the long road, because whenever I arrived back home from a trip, he would come bounding out of the bush and run up the stairs to the porch and wait for me.

I know AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL is on tonight.  Is LAW & ORDER SVU on? Is it usually on on saturdays? I don't watch it but noticed it in my tv guide.

Yes, LAW & ORDER SVU is on tonight, and I believe it's a new episode. It has moved to Wednesdays this year from its Tuesday night at 10 slot where it had been about a half dozen years. The Saturday night broadcasts are reruns.

I watched a PERRY MASON episode, and this must have been one of the very few MASON episodes that NEVER entered a courtroom. Perry was actually behaving more like a P.I. than a lawyer in this episode, not a very satisfying one even though it did have a mystery. It was just SO different not having an trial element at all.

By the time I finished lunch, the mail had come, and the Hitchcock four-movie set had arrived, so I began on the first one - SUSPICION. For my money, it's the weakest of the four movies in this set, and watching it again didn't change my mind. Of, it has its moments, the acting is excellent (Nigel Bruce is especially wonderful. Fontaine's Oscar HAD to have been a consolation prize for not winning for REBECCA the year before; this performance isn't its match), and there's a certain amount of suspense about Cary Grant's true motives (which really don't ring true since they changed it from the novel.)

The disc had two bonuses: a making-of documentary and the trailer (in really tragic condition).

Peter Bogdanovich was one of the talking heads in the featurette, and he does his LOUSY impressions of Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock. Why does he always try to mimic the famous people he's interviewed when he gets in front of a camera? It's VERY irritating.

The next movie in the set is STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. These are flipper discs, so it was on the other side from SUSPICION. I'll be curious to see if there are any problems with the disc since it's on a flipper. SOme of them work flawlessly, but sometimes the encoding isn't good, and the image stutters or freezes. Should make for an interesting evening of viewing.

Unlike the STRANGERS disc I have which has the American and British versions, this one seems to offer only one version, I guess the American. I'll see tonight.

DR JMK you were younger than I was when you left your parents home.  Had I done that I would have been dragged back by the police.  I did move out when I was 18.  I told my father I was moving & he begged me to give him until the first of the month to prepare my mother.  On the first I reminded him it was moving day and I was leaving.  He was completely shocked as if I never mentioned it before.  I'm sure in his mind he had solved the problem when he convinced me to wait.  Poor guy, my mother was passed out drunk & he had to tell her when she finally woke up.

It was a little bachelor apartment, smaller than my bedroom at home and off of an alley.  I barely had a refrigerator.  I moved out with my penny collection.

TOD - My move to the University of Michigan residence halls as a freshman seemed like a real break from home because my parents moved at the same time from the house in which I'd grown up.  Even though I spent summers and the first half of my graduate school year living in their condo, it never really felt like home to me.  In the middle of grad school, they and I made a mutual decision that I should move back to Ann Arbor.  With our DS Rob now living at home with us after being away for most of the past 5 years, I try to let him have a lot of space, remembering how difficult it had been to go home again.

My first real real break from home was in 1973 when I moved to Middletown for my first professional library job and lived alone in an apartment for the first time - I loved it!  All 3 of my pre-marriage apartments were in modern complexes, but I still felt very Mary Tyler Moore.  The only time I didn't like living alone was when I was sick.

DR MBarnum, and yet today you are very good to your mother.  You have such a good heart.  How old were you when she tried to give you up for adoption?  She had how many children at the time?  She might have thought it was best for you.

I am unsure as to how old I was. My grandma intervened and my mom kept me. The family who was planning to adopt me did ended up babysitting me until I was around 4 years old. I still remember them fondly, and as a child referred to my almost-mom as Momma Marilyn. I still hear from her now and then.

I came about quite accidentally because my mom got knocked up by my dad, who was in her bowling league. Of course this caused much distress to mom's then husband John, and they ended up divorcing. There were 4 kids in the family at that time (including Fed Ex driver Allen).

John did later offer to reconcile with my mom and raise me as his own, but mom declined because she was mad at him. My dad, Willard, married my mom a few years later, after divorcing his 1st wife.

I knew nothing about any of this until I was in Jr. High School and my new stepfather, Chuck (my mom's 3rd husband), gleefully told me all about it. In fact he would relish in reminding me of my illegitimacy as often as he could.

John is still alive and lives up in this area, and I see him all the time since he is my sister's father. He is a good guy, very smart and quite well off, and has always been very kind to me.

Yep, Medford was a regular Peyton Place!

I still have the opening-night apple earrings you gave me for being your rehearsal assistant for The Apple Tree.

Good Evening!

I decided to go ahead and head out for a bit after the rain stopped earlier. I'm still feeling a little "off", but I'm also feeling like whatever is "off" in my system is on its way out. (I hope.)  Oh, and a 15-minute cat nap also helped. :)

DR elmore - Will the muffins be meant only for David or for David and his fellow pit-mates?  Otherwise, if I'm remembering correctly: red wine or dark chocolate or Levain.

It's about time you two made it legal!

As for the Topic of the Day...

Well, each fall that I returned to school at VCU, I more or less moved away from home. Again. And again. And again.  And that pattern sort of continued for a few years after I graduated since whenever I worked in the DC area, I stayed with my parents, and whenever I was on the road, my parents' house was basically my "permanent address".

The big move happened when I was 29 and decided to move back to Richmond.  I was visiting some friends for the weekend, found out that the music store there was looking for a manager for their sheet music room... And after being interviewed and hired in the same afternoon, well... At first, I stayed in the spare room of one of my college professors, and then found an apartment on the Northside of town.  Then I met Steve that September, and then I moved in with him that October.

I guess I didn't really have my own place until a few years later, "after Steve", but I stayed in Richmond, and moved in with my friend, Christopher.  I needed a room, and he had an open room in his apartment.  Since I was still working on shows that time up in DC, I was able to gradually furnish my room - and the kitchen - with regular stops at IKEA on the way back down to Richmond: bed, shelving, tables, chairs, lamps, etc.  -And managing to walk into Williams-Sonoma just as they had set up a new table of clearance items also helped.

I hope it's nicer tomorrow.

George is soon off to play Captain von Trapp in Houston for the holiday and we promised to see each other in 2010 when he returns.

He puts deals together.  He has several major features in the pipeline right now.  That said, he is the first to admit (as he did today) he's "not Steven Spielberg."  I was equally honest and said I didn't really see a huge market for another FF feature, to which he responded, "So what?", which made me laugh.  I suggested a documentary might be the better way to go.  We're just at the very early stages of a discussion.  Nothing may come if it.  Or something.  Time will tell.

I watched STRANGERS ON A TRAIN when I went back down. It's always been one of my favorite Hitchcock films, long before I ever read how it was regarded by critics. The set pieces and moody moments the film has are still singular achievements. And it's the perfect length, too.

The version on this TCM budget priced release is the American version. The British version was not offered as a bonus or an alternate.

There is a compilation audio commentary with all kinds of participants. The stuff with Andrew WIlson talking about Patricia Highsmith's career and about the changes from book to film were particularly memorable. Of course there are the usual suspects in it, too: Pat O'Connell and her three daughters, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert Osborne, Richard Schickel.

There is also the trailer.

12th grade graduation was in June, I was out of my father's house before the end of summer.  Studio City, 2 bedroom apartment ($195.00 a month in 1971) with another girl friend (who my then boyfriend tried to sleep with).   The next year I moved to Hollywood to a 3 story house (there were 5 of us) and it was the best year I ever had living with people I did not know.  The house was owned by one of the first people who published a book on how to grow your own pot (those were great times, and I did not even get high).

I was up for adoption twice, once in Berlin in 1958 by my mother (my father took me to the US instead), and then again in St. Louis in 1961 (this one I'm not sure about, all I remember was being told to lie that everything was OK living with my 1/2 sister).

I've been living alone for the first time in my life this last year, and I must say I am getting used to it.

Topic of the Day:  When I was going to Western Washington University, I lived in two different off-campus apartments after living on campus for two years (I transferred to Western as a junior).  The first one was during the last quarter of my senior year (I ended up going to college for five years).  A friend and I got this apartment in a security building and the windows looked over the water.  The building was just a few block down the hill from Western, so it was very easy to get to school.  To get to my bedroom, you had to go through the bathroom.  That was weird, but we never had any trouble. ::) The other apartment I had was in downtown Bellingham and the building was converted from a hotel that was built in the 1920s.  It was so cool.  It was a studio with just a kitchen and a bathroom with a claw-foot tub...no shower and no way to hang a shower curtain. :P Anyway, it had a 12-foot ceiling and a trundle bed that I never used...I used a hide-a-bed.  I lived there until I graduated and moved back home.

After graduating in 1989, I moved back home.  I lived with my parents until 1991, when a friend that I met in a show asked if I wanted be be roommates.  She was also living with her mom and wanted to move out.  I had a job (in the same building that I still work...and just before I got the job that I still now have) and could afford to move out, so I did.  We shared an apartment here in Tumwater, just down the street from where I live now!  It was a two-bedroom townhouse with one and a half baths.  We got along very well.  I also was friends with her boyfriend, so we all got along.  We shared for about two years when she decided to buy a house and I got my own apartment.

I moved to Lacey in a one bedroom, and lived there for about five years.  I then moved in with my sister for about five years, then got an apartment on the west side of Olympia for about a year and a half.  When my sister built her new house, I rented the house that I had just moved out of.  When I lived on the west side, I didn't change the address on my driver's license, my checks, or change my voter registration.  When I moved back into the house after my sister built her new house, I didn't have to change any of those back.  That was convenient...but it was not planned at all.  It just worked out that way...and I have over 300 checks left.  I wasn't just going to throw them away!  AND my sister still lived at that address, so if there was any problem, she knew me. ;)
