Well, you've read the notes, the notes were tired, and now it is time for you to post until the tired cows come home.

Good morning, all! If all the gunk that clogging up the middle of my head would go away, I would be ecstatic. Otherwise, I feel pretty good today. This morning I have to return to the McGlinnventory. Will it ever end?

I smiled broadly at JMK's post about Bill Charlap; his mother Sandy Stewart was a lovely lady; I met her around 1983 working with Ben Bagley on something, maybe one of the Kern Revisited albums. I liked her very much.

I don't know if they're still married but Bill's fiancee Michelle played violin on my first recordings with BK and Varese Sarabande, ANYWHERE I WANDER and UNSUNG SONDHEIM, but she was responsible for problems for BK with the union later and I haven't seen her since.

bk, I didn't see your name in there at all! And since I don't have tivo...

I put in "Bruce Kimmel and HHW" into the credits but didn't think it had made it since it went on for 4 months after I left. (Over a month just to online!) But you guys were the only personal thanks I did because I felt like there were so many people on this board who shared music or information with me that they had made a contribution to the film, more than many of the people who ARE in the credits!

And I think the Bill Charlap thing at the end was a little weird...another of the director's whims. C.E. was supposed to get a big name to narrate it but no big names wanted the task of reading the lame narration so the director got his buddy Bill to do it. The problem with getting something for free, though, is that when the director  supervises the vo session and doesn't allow the editors to be there, then if he records a very early version of the script instead of the one that was doctored (all the embarrassing stuff taken out) and sent to him and didn't even REALIZE it, it's hard to ask someone to come back in for free to correct your screw-up.

TOD: IMITATION OF LIFE (it never struck me until I was typing in what a weird title this is).

Some of the classic books that have been made into films over and over again come to mind, like DAVID COPPERFIELD (the TNT version) LITTLE WOMEN (Winona Ryder's version) ALICE IN WONDERLAND (the 70's version) and Kenneth Branagh's HAMLET.

DR edisaurus, great choices! I prefer the BBC remake of DAVID COPPERFIELD with Maggie Smith and Daniel Radcliffe, and the irreverent Disney version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND. I do think Winona Ryder's LITTLE WOMEN is the best' I want to strangle Spring Byington's Marmie in the Hepburn version!

E&T DR Rodzinski just gave me a lovely mention in a plug for Brent Barrett's album in the new Playbill online and that resulted in his getting an email from a reporter who interviewed me a century ago for The Middletown Journal when it was still a newspaper. He wanted Rodzinski to forward an email to me. He did. I emailed said reporter back. I may try to lure him to HHW,

My tummy - and my head - feel fine, DR edisaurus.  If anything, I still feel a little full from the meal I had last night.  Even though we did have three shots of vodka - courtesy of Aran - they were "small shots".  He never really filled the glasses all the way up.  -And we had plenty of food in our stomachs to help balance it all out too.

I've asked him to check out HHW, which it turns out he has in the past - that's one guest now identified - and perhaps he will join us at some point.

Time for the McGlinnventory. When I get back, I have some MOST HAPPY FELLA notes to type up.

TOD:

The problem with remakes is that, if you remake a classic...or even just a successful film, you will always be competing with the memory of the original.  Therefore, you should only remake flops.

Or, you could take the basic characters and plot of that successful film and transport them to a new setting.  BROKEN LANCE (1954) with Spencer Tracy was a remake of HOUSE OF STRANGERS (1949) with Edward G. Robinson, except one was a western and the other a "modern" film noir.  Both were excellent and successful, because they really didn't compete with each other.

I think Alfred Hitchcock accomplished something wonderful by remaking one of his own movies - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH and doing it with such style.

I know lots of people prefer the original British version, but I'm not one of them. I far prefer the remake, and it's probably near the top of my most wanted Blu-ray Hitchcock films.

What I don't understand is why anyone would make a remake of a successful movie. Why don't they just remake flops into successful movies?

I can't come up with a remake that I liked.  Of course we could spend days on remakes that we disliked around these parts!  I do like the TV version of "Bye Bye Biridie" that was done in 1995 or so only because it restores the original story from the musical and a good part of the score that was not included in the Ann-Margaret version.  But I'm not sure that counts...

Right...the filmmaker never wanted the story to be chronological, and that was one of the most frustrating things. He never failed to say that J'M's story was "boring". So J.M. had to be linked to any soundbite where a famous author or collaborator is mentioned instead of just the greatness of the music selling itself.

I gained a new appreciation of Dinah from working on this. She seemed like a really nice lady!

There's a lot that I like about the remake, but Brando's performance isn't one of them.

I do like the fact that, in the remake, there is a specific incident that brings about the mutiny, which was not there in the original.

I've seen the picture with and without the epilogue (which was cut from the general release version), and I think the picture works best with it.

Oh, yes, I remember her - it wasn't only what she did, it was the way she played.

bk, I didn't see your name in there at all!

Well, apparently it's in :)

DR JMK, I don't feel like I'm being hard on myself, but it is hard knowing how much better it could have been with someone who cared about J.M... Or an exec producer whose sole contribution was watching it a few times, deciding it dragged and wanting to cut a lot of good performances and storyline. Of course, performances by ex-lovers did remain....

I cannot think of any post-60s remake that I can say I truly enjoyed more than the original.  Remakes made before then I don't tend to think of as remakes since they are generally the version I first saw and became familiar with.

We have returned from a very sweet memorial service at our former church.  While there we got our first glimpse at the remodeling of the parlor area, which is very different, but quite nice.  We also went to the public library and then to lunch at The Meadows, where I learned 2 things:

1) I prefer their dinner menu to their lunch menu and
2) I am not accustomed to drinking wine at lunchtime.

Now I have to deal with some business for the grantwriter group - the speaker I'd scheduled for Dec. 1 called just as we were leaving for the service to tell me that she has a conflict that day.  Fortunately, we have not sent out the official notification yet.

In today's episode of "Larry and the McGlinnventory" I discovered another Victor Herbert vocal score John McGlinn borrowed from me around 15 years ago and never returned.  We also uncovered today a photocopy of a psychiatrist's report from 1967 on 14-year-old John's psychiatric state that showed he was already having personality and mental problems and another copy of 1993 the will leaving me third in line as heir (I've still got guilt over that one!), and a lot of family strife. Most fascinating.

A somewhat addle-pated woman whom I occasionally accompany is in the habit of sending me endless forwarded emails, each containing some "gem" she thinks my life wouldn't be complete without.  Well today she actually made me laugh with this one.  Caption reads, "I got pulled over for speeding and was talking my way out of it until the cop saw my dog in the back seat."  :)

Nice to hear Dinah Shore when she could really sing.

Too bad you couldn't make your own covert "original editor's" cut and pass it out among friends and show how much better it could've been (even though I haven't actually seen the broadcast version, yet).

I may try to lure him to HHW

That's great, Larry!  Congrats!

So...

I just heard back from the man who my friend and I found passed out on the sidewalk the other night.  He's back home in Virginia, and doing OK, but...

When he woke up in the hospital yesterday morning, he had no idea how he got there, or that he had passed out on the sidewalk the night before.  Apparently, there was no record of who brought him in the night before - no indication of an ambulance or police report on his discharge papers. He's been trying to call the hospital today, but can't get through to anybody who can really help him, so he'll try again in the morning.  So, he kept asking me what I knew, if I knew anything about what had happened, and all I could really tell him was that we found him on the sidewalk, then called 911. I did bring up the fact that I noticed that there was no cash in his wallet, and he said that his watch was also missing.  He then mentioned that some other pilots have dealt with similar situations, and that someone probably slipped something in his beer - he was at the Irish pub around the corner.

So, the mystery is almost solved, and I really am glad that I followed up and that he called me back.

So... Wouldn't there have to be some sort of indication of who brought him into the ER somewhere?

I have been watching ZORRO episodes all day long (except for lunch out with friends). There were the Cesar Romero episodes and the three Annette episodes (complete with song). Jonathan Harris stopped by as a villain for a story arc and so did Lee Van Cleef. They used many more guest stars during season two than they did in season one.

The show spent the first 1/3 of the season in Monterey instead of Los Angeles, but I was glad to get back to L.A. for the remainder of the season. More comedy in season two and in most episodes, Zorro didn't even show up until the last six or seven minutes of the program.

Believe me, we thought of that, but when I left we got rid of one editing system and then were both too busy to do it. And we didn't get the masters, etc. until the very end, so it would hahve looked low-res anbd ugly and not mixed.

Everything in the new space is demoed and the carpenter will start again on Monday (he had the flu).  The painter should be there starting about the 18th.  This is too fun. Especially since I'm not paying for the remodel (except for part of the blinds).  Edith and I went up there at the end of the day today and walked through all the rooms.  I've changed my mind about what we're going to do in a couple of them and may again, but that won't effect the decorating at this point.

My sister, her husband and my niece were able to get their H1N1 shots today. They were supposed to give the coupons at 11am but at 8am they had already started?!?

Anyhow my sister got one at 8:30am for 3pm. Only problem is they were very backed up. Kids between 6 months and 5 are the priority here. And apparently the kids were taking a long time.

My niece was a champ and did not cry. But they did have to wait 2 hours even with their coupon.

Jake the dog wins most write-in votes for council
By Lynn Zerschling lzerschling@siouxcityjournal.com | Posted: Wednesday, November 4, 2009 10:15 pm

.SIOUX CITY -- Jake the missing Labrador retreiver barked the loudest and grabbed 62 write-in votes for City Council in Tuesday's election, while "Jake's kidnapper" got 1 vote.

Woodbury County Election Commissioner Pat Gill said Wednesday people either penned "Jake," "Jake the dog" or "Jake Rochester" in the write-in category.

Jake was Councilman Aaron Rochester's pet who bit a neighbor June 27 and was declared vicious. After two hearings upheld that declaration, Jake was supposed to be euthanzied, according to a revised city vicious dog law that received unanimous council approval last year.

While on death row in a pen at Sioux City Animal Control, someone kidnapped him on Aug. 2. Jake drew a lot of attention from entrepreneurs who sold T-shirts, while the Weekender magazine started a "Vote Jake" campaign complete with campaign mugs, buttons, bumper stickers and T-shirts.

Thank You, DR Jennifer - Well, in "everybody's" defense, I have to say that even we weren't sure if he was homeless, drunk (and about to get up) or ???  Thankfully, our instincts kicked in, and after a few minutes of observing him, we went over and tried to wake him up and help him.  -There are a couple of bars and pubs in that neighborhood - heck, even we had just left a bar - and maybe seeing people drunk is a "normal" thing in that area.  Or not. :-\

I was able to track down someone who works for an insurance company.  He said that since he had already been discharged, all of his records will have been transferred to the Billing department and his insurance company.  -Said information has already been passed on.

Nice, & clever of you to find the answer for him.  I hope the police are investigating this.

As far as the TOD is concerned, mine have already been mentioned.

I, too, like 1962's MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY more than the Gable/Laughton original.  I even like Brando's performance more than Gable's.
THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH from the 1950s, to me, is much more exciting than the early British version.

The remake I can live without is Gus van Sant's PSYCHO.

Of course, the two hour-long ZORRO episodes in the second set had great star power.

Annette starred in the first one as a completely different character than the one she played in the second season. She also sings two songs in the hour-long show, one with Henry Calvin and a solo.

The second one had Ricardo Montalban and Ross Martin as the guest star bandits. Very enjoyable ZORRO outing, the last ever produced by Disney. Such a shame.

I'm now the proud owner of a Magic Mouse.  The Sherman Oaks store was out of them (they're the worst Apple Store ever), and I got the last one at The Grove.  I got it home and got it "paired" but none of the scrolling functions would work and I couldn't even get the screen in preferences to allow me to set it up.  I then read the little mini-instruction booklet and it said to check for software updates, so I did and there was indeed and update for the wireless mouse.  I did it, restarted, and then started over again and this time everything worked like a charm, I set my preferences and this thing works like a dream.
