TOD: IMITATION OF LIFE (it never struck me until I was typing in what a weird title this is).
Some of the classic books that have been made into films over and over again come to mind, like DAVID COPPERFIELD (the TNT version) LITTLE WOMEN (Winona Ryder's version) ALICE IN WONDERLAND (the 70's version) and Kenneth Branagh's HAMLET.
And the word of the day is: MAUNDER!
Ooohhh...my tummy feels like I drank too much wine. I wonder how DR Jose's feels?
My father is having his cataract surgery this morning....an outpatient procedure.....so hopefully he will be able to see better by this afternoon.
DR Elmore - is the reporter anyone I know?

The best remake in the history of movies for me is THE MALTESE FALCON. It was actually the third version of the story, but it got everything right, and I never tire of watching it.
Therefore, you should only remake flops.
I guess I never got the point of view of the Mercer documentary except...."and then he wrote.....".....and it wasn't even in much of a chronological order. I liked the old TV variety show clips....but many of them were too short.
Nice to hear Dinah Shore when she could really sing.

TOD: I don't mind saying that I much prefer the 1962 remake of "Mutiny on the Bounty" to the 1935 classic with Gable and Laughton. Maybe it's the color, maybe it's the location work, maybe it's that dazzling epic score...and just maybe it's the totally superb performance by Brando that wipes out all memory of the original for me.
I think Alfred Hitchcock accomplished something wonderful by remaking one of his own movies - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH and doing it with such style.
I know lots of people prefer the original British version, but I'm not one of them. I far prefer the remake, and it's probably near the top of my most wanted Blu-ray Hitchcock films.

There's a lot that I like about the remake, but Brando's performance isn't one of them.
I do like the fact that, in the remake, there is a specific incident that brings about the mutiny, which was not there in the original.
I've seen the picture with and without the epilogue (which was cut from the general release version), and I think the picture works best with it.

I thought it was the Prologue that was cut. My sister took me to see this in a roadshow engagement when I was maybe 4 (?) and I thought I had gone nuts when I got my first home video version and that Prologue wasn't there. In fact the Prologue is what makes the Epilogue make sense.

I've got the DVD in my Marlon Brando collection, but I've yet to watch it. Does anybody know if the Prologue and/or Epilogue is present in this version?
Jane, I think you're right about the benign thing. He probably told me at first glance they looked OK but he said I would be getting the final results in the mail in a week to 10 days.

We had just finished another wonderful dinner at Cafe Sim-Sim - a great Russian (Azerbaijani cuisine) place in Brooklyn - when the owner called me and my friend, Eric, over to his table……..

I gained a new appreciation of Dinah from working on this. She seemed like a really nice lady!
Good morning, all! If all the gunk that clogging up the middle of my head would go away, I would be ecstatic. Otherwise, I feel pretty good today. This morning I have to return to the McGlinnventory. Will it ever end?
I smiled broadly at JMK's post about Bill Charlap; his mother Sandy Stewart was a lovely lady; I met her around 1983 working with Ben Bagley on something, maybe one of the Kern Revisited albums. I liked her very much.
I don't know if they're still married but Bill's fiancee Michelle played violin on my first recordings with BK and Varese Sarabande, ANYWHERE I WANDER and UNSUNG SONDHEIM, but she was responsible for problems for BK with the union later and I haven't seen her since.
bk, I didn't see your name in there at all! And since I don't have tivo...
I put in "Bruce Kimmel and HHW" into the credits but didn't think it had made it since it went on for 4 months after I left. (Over a month just to online!) But you guys were the only personal thanks I did because I felt like there were so many people on this board who shared music or information with me that they had made a contribution to the film, more than many of the people who ARE in the credits!
DR JMK, I don't feel like I'm being hard on myself, but it is hard knowing how much better it could have been with someone who cared about J.M... Or an exec producer whose sole contribution was watching it a few times, deciding it dragged and wanting to cut a lot of good performances and storyline. Of course, performances by ex-lovers did remain....
My father is having his cataract surgery this morning....an outpatient procedure.....so hopefully he will be able to see better by this afternoon.
I didn't get to see the Mercer doc last night but I will watch it this weekend.
BTW, did anyone watch the premier of V? I completely forgot about it and didn't even record it.

Right...the filmmaker never wanted the story to be chronological, and that was one of the most frustrating things. He never failed to say that J'M's story was "boring". So J.M. had to be linked to any soundbite where a famous author or collaborator is mentioned instead of just the greatness of the music selling itself.
I gained a new appreciation of Dinah from working on this. She seemed like a really nice lady!
E&T DR Rodzinski just gave me a lovely mention in a plug for Brent Barrett's album in the new Playbill online and that resulted in his getting an email from a reporter who interviewed me a century ago for The Middletown Journal when it was still a newspaper. He wanted Rodzinski to forward an email to me. He did. I emailed said reporter back. I may try to lure him to HHW

Too bad you couldn't make your own covert "original editor's" cut and pass it out among friends and show how much better it could've been (even though I haven't actually seen the broadcast version, yet).
Can anyone else besides JR mention that absolutely bizarre remake of a Frances Farmer film, in fact a Farmer film that may be a propos to a lot of yesterday and today's posts?
Jose, ERs are so busy that anyone could have just walked him in and then left.

DR Edi I'm so sorry this was not the wonderful experience it should have been.
Where did that happen again, DR Jose? (Just wondering if it was *my* Irish pub...)

I was able to track down someone who works for an insurance company. He said that since he had already been discharged, all of his records will have been transferred to the Billing department and his insurance company. -Said information has already been passed on.
DR François - You don't have to be a singer to attend a masterclass nor to enjoy the singing and process.
So...
I just heard back from the man who my friend and I found passed out on the sidewalk the other night. He's back home in Virginia, and doing OK, but...
When he woke up in the hospital yesterday morning, he had no idea how he got there, or that he had passed out on the sidewalk the night before. Apparently, there was no record of who brought him in the night before - no indication of an ambulance or police report on his discharge papers. He's been trying to call the hospital today, but can't get through to anybody who can really help him, so he'll try again in the morning. So, he kept asking me what I knew, if I knew anything about what had happened, and all I could really tell him was that we found him on the sidewalk, then called 911. I did bring up the fact that I noticed that there was no cash in his wallet, and he said that his watch was also missing. He then mentioned that some other pilots have dealt with similar situations, and that someone probably slipped something in his beer - he was at the Irish pub around the corner.
So, the mystery is almost solved, and I really am glad that I followed up and that he called me back.
So... Wouldn't there have to be some sort of indication of who brought him into the ER somewhere?
And that's why I don't drink beer or go into Irish pubs.
Well, Otto (DD) seems to be over his week long drug induced haze (which was probably because of the antibiotics) and seems to be back to his normal self. His paw seems better.

Well, it's not but at least I have a film to work on now that has a great director. The subject matter isn't close to my heart like Mercer but I will learn to like baseball by the end and it's always a joy to collaborate with Peter.

Nice, & clever of you to find the answer for him. I hope the police are investigating this.
My sister, her husband and my niece were able to get their H1N1 shots today. They were supposed to give the coupons at 11am but at 8am they had already started?!?
Anyhow my sister got one at 8:30am for 3pm. Only problem is they were very backed up. Kids between 6 months and 5 are the priority here. And apparently the kids were taking a long time.
My niece was a champ and did not cry. But they did have to wait 2 hours even with their coupon.
Jake the dog wins most write-in votes for council

.SIOUX CITY -- Jake the missing Labrador retreiver barked the loudest and grabbed 62 write-in votes for City Council in Tuesday's election, while "Jake's kidnapper" got 1 vote.
Woodbury County Election Commissioner Pat Gill said Wednesday people either penned "Jake," "Jake the dog" or "Jake Rochester" in the write-in category.
Jake was Councilman Aaron Rochester's pet who bit a neighbor June 27 and was declared vicious. After two hearings upheld that declaration, Jake was supposed to be euthanzied, according to a revised city vicious dog law that received unanimous council approval last year.
While on death row in a pen at Sioux City Animal Control, someone kidnapped him on Aug. 2. Jake drew a lot of attention from entrepreneurs who sold T-shirts, while the Weekender magazine started a "Vote Jake" campaign complete with campaign mugs, buttons, bumper stickers and T-shirts.

Thank You, DR Jennifer - Well, in "everybody's" defense, I have to say that even we weren't sure if he was homeless, drunk (and about to get up) or ??? Thankfully, our instincts kicked in, and after a few minutes of observing him, we went over and tried to wake him up and help him. -There are a couple of bars and pubs in that neighborhood - heck, even we had just left a bar - and maybe seeing people drunk is a "normal" thing in that area. Or not. :-\
DR Jennifer, this must be big news out your way:

Thanks Cilla. If you ever find out where the pooch has been hiding, please let us know. We had a dog accidentally bite Bryan when he was a toddler. Luckily I have a brother who could stitch Bryan's face without reporting the incident. BTW, my brother the surgeon did a beautiful job on Bryan's face.

A nice surprise arrived for me today in the mail: The Blu-ray of NORTH BY NORTHWEST. And since I'm doing a very easy to do disc tomorrow for my work project, I should be able to watch this tomorrow. Can't wait!
