Well, you've read the notes, the notes had warm cockles, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to find their cockles.

Well, I certainly remember my first comedic actress:

Fanny Brice on the Baby Snooks radio show.

Later on it was Gracie Allen.

Early TV - Ann Southern and Eve Arden

Most recent - Bea Arthur

Taking a cue from FADE OUT FADE IN - I guess the only way to slow down the FINIAN'S RAINBOW grosses would be to bring in Betty Hutton as a replacement for Kate Baldwin - although Betty (were she still here) I am sure would rather play OG.

TOD:

Lucille Ball - I love the shows when she describes what happened so clearly that you imagine you saw it.  Vivian Vance was the perfect foil...."And then what happened?"  These episodes include The Cadillac getting rammed into the Pontiac  "Ethel, I bet if skip my next henna rinse, my hair will come in snow white!") and the lawn mower runamuck through Connecticut ("You haven't lived until you've driven a riding lawn mower on the Boston Post Road - against traffic all the way!.....The way people came out of their houses to see me ride by you would have thought I was Paul Revere!").

Carol Burnett of course, with an honorable mention to Vickie Lawrence as Mama.

Lucille Ball - The chocolate factory episode, "Vitameatavegamin", the stomping of the grapes...
Carol Burnett - Mrs. Wiggins, Eunice... And I still remember the tribute to Stephen Sondheim... Hmmm...

I have been listening to Adam Faith and Billy Fury this morning.  I think I like Mr Adam Faith more.  Mr Billy Fury did a lot of cover versions of songs.

I like best a song Adam Faith did called Easy Going Me.....but I can't find a link to post here.  I think Mr Guy Haines could do a nice version of this particular ditty.

Quote
The phrase cockles of the heart is one of the more lovely idioms in the language, isn’t it? Something that warms the cockles of one’s heart induces a glow of pleasure, sympathy, affection, or some such similar emotion. What gets warmed is the innermost part of one’s being. It’s not that surprising that it should be associated with the heart, that being the presumed seat of the emotions for most people. But what are the cockles?

We’re not sure. We do know that the expression turns up first in the middle of the seventeenth century, and that the earliest form of the idiom was rejoice the cockles of one’s heart.

Cockles are a type of bivalve mollusc, once a staple part of the diet for many British people (you may recall that Sweet Molly Malone once wheeled her wheelbarrow through Dublin’s fair city, crying “cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh!”). They are frequently heart-shaped (their formal zoological genus was at one time Cardium, of the heart), with ribbed shells.

It may be that the shape and spiral ribbing of the ventricles of the heart reminded surgeons of the two valves of the cockle. But I can’t find an example of the word cockle being applied to the heart outside this expression, which makes me suspicious of this explanation. It may be that the shape of the cockleshell, suggesting the heart as it so obviously does, gave rise to cockles of the heart as an expansion.

James Woodfield has pointed out that there is another possible explanation. In medieval Latin, the ventricles of the heart were at times called cochleae cordis, where the second word is an inflected form of cor, heart. Those unversed in Latin could have misinterpreted cochleae as cockles, or it might have started out as a university in-joke. Oddly, cochlea in Latin is the word for a snail (from the shape of the ventricles — it’s also the name given to the spiral cavity of the inner ear), so if this story is right we should really be speaking of warming the snails of one’s heart.

TOD:

I love Lucy--best performance--all of them!  From her hillbilly gal blind date to that sick look on her face when Ricky broke her eggs.

Lily Tomlin--been in love with her ever since I first saw her on THE MUSIC SCENE.  My favorite performance of hers has to be THE SEARCH FOR INTELLIGENT LIFE...

Carol Burnett--I think she reached comic heights with her Eunice character--she made that woman fully realized and had us feel her pain as much as make us laugh at her.  I also think Vikki Lawrence gets honorable mention for her Mama (and for her Maria Ouspenskya.)

Imogene Coca--One of the best female clowns ever--I can't think of a particular performance but some of her best stuff is in that TEN FROM YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS PBS special.

Gilda Radner--I loved her in her GILDA LIVE show on B'way.

Madeline Kahn--with that voice she could whip any throw-away line into a big laugh.  Favorite performance:  BLAZING SADDLES.

I really adore Carol Burnett. Lily Tomlin, Gilda Radner, and Madeline Kahn are all favorites.

And the Lucille Ball on I LOVE LUCY is irreplaceable. Funny, but I don't find her nearly as appealing in any of her movies (as a comedienne) or in any of her subsequent TV series.

As I mentioned last night, the plans today are for me to work on SCRUBS - Season 8 on Blu-ray. I'll be curious to see the show on HD because they weren't broadcasting it in HD back when I was still watching it. I'll be interested to see the characters and the sets in greater detail.

However, I've been assured that I will be receiving last week's Blu-ray releases of I LOVE YOU BETH COOPER and ALIENS IN THE ATTIC, and if I do, those will get priority since they're already out, and SCRUBS doesn't come out for another week.

Can't wait to see last night's CASTLE episode while I eat lunch. It has become (along with BONES, THE MENTALIST, MODERN FAMILY and MEDIUM) among my favorite shows on network TV.

(Of course, those very entertaining cable shows like THE CLOSER and BURN NOTICE and LEVERAGE are also right up there among my favorites.)

Oh, and Cher had her moments on the Sonny and Cher Show -- she did this character in a beehive, cat glasses, and a leopard skin jumpsuit.
And I always thought Babs showed good screwball comedic chops in her comedies like What's Up Doc, etc.

Good morning, all! This morning I shall head down to Toyland to pick up a few items and to look for a missing orchestra score. On the way I shall stop at Macy's and check out their comforters. I am finding nothing online that I like.

After that, it's back here to work on some Moross film music, Overture to THE SHARKFIGHTERS, and see what new fresh hell is brewing.

TOD:
Carol Burnett: JULIE & CAROL AT CARNEGIE HALL, the "Gone with The Wind," "Mildred Fierce," and "Babes In Barns" parodies
Madeline Kahn: "Das Chicago Song" is still the funniest Brecht-Weill parody ever and her young Lenya wonderful
Rosalind Russell in AUNTIE MAME: especially as a switchboard operator
   Lily Tomlin's Ernestine
Lucille Ball: my favorite episodes are the William Holden and Tallulah Bankhead ones
Honorable mention: Mildred Natwick, Margaret Dumont, Marian Lorne

I had an unsuccessful trek to Macy's; the only comforter I liked turned out to be a comforter cover, which I did not want. Next stop, Bed Bath and Beyond.

So, here I am at Toyland, and the missing orchestra score is not turning up. Most frustrating and aggravating. Luckily, I'm planning an LoC trip on Dec 3-4, so I can always photocopy it again if it doesn't turn up somewhere.

On Tuesdays I work with a senior choir which I take to various and sundried retirement homes.  Today I arrived early and was thumbing through some ancient Reader's Digest Condensed Books.  One from 1962 had a book with pictures called "The Joy of School."  One of the pics was a little kindergarten male and the caption was a quote from him:  "When I grow up will I be a boy or a girl?"  I of course thought of many of you.  ;)

Tuesday morning greetings!  I'm doing something I probably haven't done for about 20 years - watching SESAME STREET.

AOL is revisting the "Are Bert & Ernie Gay" issue:

Quote
Years later, Gary Knell, president of Children's Television Workshop successor Sesame Workshop, would say, "They are not gay. They are not straight. ... They don't exist below the waist."

Back from a two-mile jog.  After a year and a half of jogging, with probably only missing thirty days in all that time, I'm just finding it really difficult to have the energy to do four miles - so, I think switching up the mileage is what I'll do from now on.

I got seven SCRUBS episodes watched. The show hasn't changed a bit in terms of its motif, and the characters have only gotten sillier. Courtney Cox had a three-episode story arc as the new chief of medicine (no wonder she's now working on her own series with the same creator/executive producer Bill Lawrence and his wife Christa Miller).

A few of the regulars have switched around to new jobs, but it's still the same mix of surreal fantasy and dramedy.

There are 19 episodes in this set, and it's going to be a long slog to the end. A little of this show now goes a long way with me. I get impatient with its silliness.

Some interesting TV news tidbits:

MAD MEN's season finale on Sunday was its second highest rated episode ever.

ABC has canceled EASTWICK. THE FORGOTTEN, which has also not been burning with the Nielsen numbers, did get a five-episode pick-up for the rest of the season.

Another interesting bit of TV news:

ABC is planning to move UGLY BETTY to Wednesday nights at 8 in a last ditch effort to save it. This will likely happen midseason after the initial order for HANK is run. Patricia Heaton's THE MIDDLE was renewed for the rest of the season, so I'm not sure where ABC plans to put it. Perhaps on Monday after DANCING WITH THE STARS concludes paired with BETTER OFF TED or the new reinvesntion of SCRUBS? I doubt they'll burn it off on Friday. I suspect WIFE SWAP will go back on Friday.

Ooh, the producer who is interested in my books just got a little snippy with me in an e-mail.  Not a good idea.  She'd mentioned another young actress who's currently on some Disney show playing a supporting role - she said she'd thought of a way to maybe spin-off from that show.  Now, if the young actress is playing a role wouldn't you logically assume that to spin-off from that role you'd have to keep the name the same?  Certainly, that was my assumption.  So, I wrote the producer back and said that whatever ideas she had about such things were fine, but one of the few things that I would not allow was the changing of the character's name.  She wrote back, snippily, and said of course she's very protective of the character (!) and would never allow such a thing and why would I write such an e-mail.  I wrote back and said that her words had led me to respond, nicely, in the way I responded.  I told her that is why I loathe e-mails because people just read into them things that are simply not there.  I concluded with a smiley face, something I'd also included in the original e-mail response.  I then explained what a smiley face is.  But snippiness just raises all sorts of red flags and if anything like that occurs again, then she'll have to just deal with my agent on everything.  And she's going to have to do that anyway, before she even thinks about pitching this anywhere.

I'm thinking about going to get a sandwich or some bacon and eggs or something light like that.  While a light meal is being served prior to the reading for our actors, it's being prepared by the co-author of the long musical and I've tasted other things he's made and they haven't been to my liking all that much - this is some roasted chicken thing that has been marinating for two days and includes whole cloves of garlic, and to eat that sort of thing before a reading isn't thrilling to me.  So, if I have something light now, I can have something light later when the creative team will meet at Jerry's to discuss the reading - either dessert or some soup or whatever.  I think that makes the most sense.

When the head of the HTF, who is a Warners advocate, comes on and blames the studio for changing the MGM logo to a Warners logo on Logan's Run, you'd think before leveling that accusation, that he'd actually watch the Blu-Ray.  He must have read it somewhere, because I, astonished to think Warners had done such a thing, just popped in the disc.  Like all Warners Blu-Rays it begins with the Warner Home Video logo, which then fades out - it is NOT part of the film transfer.  Then the movie proper starts with - wait for it - the MGM logo its always had.  Amazing.

DR Elmore, I'm coming up to NY on Dec 21st and leaving the 23rd, to do a screening of rough cut of our Jews and Baseball film. I know it's wishful thinking, but I would love to see FINIAN'S RAINBOW as well as BIRDIE (just to see Bill Irwin!) and am wondering if you think that's feasible. I was shooting to see one the night of the 22nd and then a matinee on the 23rd. A Christmas present to ME! I know shows are probably very crowded that time of year!

I will probably also coming up for a few days a week or two before. Maybe I need to see the Radio City musical hall xmas show. I also want to see OLEANNA. Too much to do, but maybe if I spread it out between the two trips...

Do you or Jose know which of these shows might close first? Or is that a loaded question?

Perhaps dear reader MattH could drop Mr. Harris a PM on the HTF site (I'm banned from there for having opinions) - and ask him to e-mail me at haineshisway at gmail dot com.  Much appreciated.

I'll do it when I get there later.

BUT....

I still have my leg being operated on Friday morning. So no wonder I have been so stressed out.

I hope this corrective surgery will alleviate all the problems I have had over the years.

I then skimmed through ATWT. Nothing remotely interesting for me. The President's news conference interrupted the previews for tomorrow.

Then I began again with SCRUBS. I got a total of 16 episodes watched today. That leaves three for tomorrow plus the bonus features on disc two (there were a fair number of them.) I should be able to complete the set by tomorrow afternoon.

Half hour comedies certainly go a lot faster than one hour drama box sets!

Then I watched tonight's NCIS. A good, exciting cat and mouse episode.

I was hoping McGee's girl friend would turn out to be a snake in the grass (she was just too perfect to be believed).

And Marie Dressler!

TCM had several of her films on yesterday.....she was so funny.  And the films she made with Polly Moran all have moments of high hilarity.

Which also made me think of Miss Martha Raye.  Miss Jean Harlow in DINNER AT EIGHT and PERSONAL PROPERTY and LIBELED LADY......

And of course Mae West.

And now I'm off to the Museum of Natural History to help - brave - a crowd of school children who are going on a scavenger hunt.
...

On purpose?

Not only on purpose, but also basically on the fly!

I noticed a Tweet from Doug - a.k.a. The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck Man - saying that he was volunteering at the American Museum of Natural History today.  There were lots of kids, but not that many adults.  So, I tweeted back asking if they needed more chaperones, and he texted me back: "Come on down!"  So, I did.

Of course, once I got there, the whole student to adult ratio had increased.  In fact, in our group, it ended up being one-to-one: four kids, four adults.  They had broken each of the school groups into smaller groups, and then New York Cares (http://newyorkcares.org/) assigned a couple of adult volunteers to each group.  However, since we were watching over a group of third-graders, the one-to-one ratio was a good thing.  ;)

They were actually great kids. There were some "trouble spots" during the day, but they were kids just being kids.  No one got hurt, no one cried (well, one girl almost started to cry), and they all gave us big hugs when we left.  I really had a wonderful time.  *And not only was it nice getting into the museum for free, but they also gave each group a bunch of vouchers for lunch in the museum cafe!

On Tuesdays I work with a senior choir which I take to various and sundried retirement homes.  Today I arrived early and was thumbing through some ancient Reader's Digest Condensed Books.  One from 1962 had a book with pictures called "The Joy of School."  One of the pics was a little kindergarten male and the caption was a quote from him:  "When I grow up will I be a boy or a girl?"  I of course thought of many of you.  ;)

I never had any doubt.  And I knew what I liked, too.

And since I ended up heading out to Brooklyn with my friend, Eric, for another culinary adventure... And since said culinary adventure ended up involving about a six mile walk... But I'm tired and sleepy, so...

If all goes well,  Jon will be going to Kansas City the end of the week to check out some colleges where he plans to go back to school after Christmas. He's got a place to stay lined up and will check that out as well.   I'm really hoping it works out, it would be a great move for him.
