Well, you've read the notes, the notes were styling, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently styling their hair in pompadours and pageboys.

I LOVED Nine when I saw it on Broadway, both the original with Raul Julia, and the revival with Antonio Banderas. I wish that they had kept more of the original songs, and am not happy that they cut My Husband Makes Movies/Only With You, and The Bells Of St. Sebastian. They did cut those, right?

The Broadway show was pretty surreal, also, with Guido's fantasy life frequently confused with reality. I remember when Javier Bardem was cast as Guido, but backed out due to "exhaustion". How was Penelope Cruz? Jane Krakowski was breathtaking in the revival.

I also have the London concert version of Nine with Jonathan Pryce and Elaine Page. Bruce, I wish you could have seen it on stage. Spectacular and incredibly moving.

Jose - that's a pretty impressive mug collection.  I have alot of show mugs, too.  I use them every day for coffee and tea.  It makes me happy to have my morning coffee in one of them.

I have the Sondheim Celebration one, which I love.

Monday morning greetings!  Today is grocery shopping day for Thanksgiving.  We're having 8 or 10 people - if it's 8, everyone can sit at the dining room table; if 10, I'll add a card table at the end and make it look like one table.  If I don't know for sure, I'm going to prepare for 10 because it will be more gracious to take away 2 spots than to add them at the last minute.

The "uncertains" are John's wife and daughter, who are having quite a time facing their first holiday season without him.

TOD:

I believe my first movie theatre 3-D experience was a showing of HOUSE OF WAX when I was a youngen.  I remember not being impressed by much of it except for the guy with the paddle ball--that part was fun.

I would love to see KISS ME, KATE in 3-D, just for the fun of it.

And I am looking forward to seeing James Cameron's AVATAR.  Initially, I dismissed it as a video game come to life through CGI, but with every new preview that is released it looks more and more astounding.  I am hoping the 3-D works well with it, too.

Good morning, all! Mr Moross and Mr Loesser are on my schedule of events today. Frst, a call to the pharmacy for more meds. I'll walk down to pick them up around noon.

While I was looking forward immensely to CHICAGO, I am very apathetic about the new film NINE, since s much of the score is gone, I find a lot of the casting bizarre, and the riginal Broadway production was one of the most glorious productions I have ever seen and heard. Those broads may have been crazy backstage but they were absolutely brilliant onstage, and their singing was glorious. I think it may have been one of the most stylish productions I've ever seen. I have been fortunate to have seen many original productions that have only suffered in revival from poor casting, idiotic direction, ugly design, and misconception; NINE was the epitome of style and [ci]chic[/i] and I remember how amazed I was that Tommy Tune's work was so stunning and different from his hysterically funny work on THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS. I was never crazy about MY ONE AND ONLY, but NINE and the (to me) less successful GRAND HOTEL are two of the greatest stagings I've ever seen. Well, GRAND HOTEL did have one misstep with that strange number in which Karen Akers was hanging off the top of set singing of her unrequited love for Montevecchi.

TOD:

My first 3-D movie was BWANA DEVIL w/Robert Stack, which didn't impress me much.  Saw it at, I believe, the Paramount Theater in Seattle.

But, a few months later, HOUSE OF WAX came out.  Saw it at the Orpheum in Seattle.

That one was/is a classic, with or without the 3-D.

I absolutely loved the original production of NINE.  It was one of those shows where everything was just perfect--the score, the cast, the staging, the scenery, costumes and lighting--veramente bella!

And it also had the best curtain call ever!

I'll probably go see the movie NINE but I'm not enthused.  From the very first preview that I saw, it looked exactly like the CHICAGO movie.

And THE BELLS OF ST SEBASTIAN has been cut?!?  That song is my favorite from the score.  I get shivers whenever I hear it.

I need to add the NINE OCR to my iPod.  Generally, I like the initial release more than I do the newer one with the additional and lengthier tracks.  With the exception of "Movie Themes" (previously only available on the audio cassette), I don't think any of the additional music and dialogue adds much to the listening experience.

I have no predisposition to like NINE. I thought CHICAGO was brilliant, but NINE on stage is a different animal completely. It's really a tough show to pull off on stage. A local community theater production of it a few years ago was atrocious. So, I'm going in with an open mind and hope I like what I see. (I haven't seen any trailers or TV spots for it, so I haven't seen anything from it. I did look at the track listing on Playbill yesterday and was dismayed with the song cuts.

The next disc in my review stack is GIMME SHELTER on Blu-ray, but I'm not much in the mood for the Rolling Stones today. I may put this off until tomorrow. I know I'm being sent the IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA Christmas show on Blu-ray to review, but I'm not anticipating anything else, so today may be a good day to be off and get caught up with TV and maybe watch a movie, too.

Add me to the list of those who thought the original Nine was amazing and brilliant. I saw it many, many times (thank you free Equity tickets!!!). Anita Morris was thrilling. There were just so many moments of wonder and magic, and you're right, Dan, the curtain call was the BEST!

I realize it's a film and a different medium but the gutting of the score is what disappoints me most. I will probably see it but I have my reservations as well due to my love of the original production.

That had to be some of the worst Italian diction I've ever heard.  Of course, the voice was nothing to write home about either.

And how come he was singing "Il mio tesoro" when he should have been singing "Deh vieni alla finestra" since they were looking for a mandolin?  -Yes, I'm that much a music geek. ::)

I tried to watch the new Bollywood movie DIL BOLE HADIPPA last night, but just couldn't make it past the 1/2 hour mark. I skipped forward to see the various musical numbers and even they were all "eh."

The plot had a plucky Punjabi gal who wants to be on the town's cricket team...but they won't allow girls, so she disguises herself as a boy.

RE:  Last night's THE AMAZIN' RACE

SPOILER WARNING!!!

I do not like non-elimination races--not at this late stage of the race, anyhoo.  It just seems to be a cheat.  But at least now there's a chance--no matter how slight--that the Globtrotters (who I now truly detest) will be bumped out of the final three.

re; the 4 teams that were left before last night's show:
I'm not crazy about them either (non-elims). Although i thought there was a 50-50 chance we'd have one last night. I agree i don't care for the globies. However I think they are much stronger than the miss america couple.  I don't really like the couple that was saved. The guy seems nice (the wife seems whiney to me). I just find them not very good. They almost always finish last, even when they start out on even footing.  They are not particularly good at physical stuff or mental. So i'm fine to see them go. I would not be happy if they won.

As for the globetrotters, they obviously have a huge physical advantage. And that actually annoys me at times. I really hope we don't have a footrace at the end. That would be so unfair.  I feel like that one globetrotter was totally trying to slow the other team down. And it was unfair that he was allowed to go down before the couple since they were both finished. I just find their attitudes (both globetrotters) sort of nasty.

My favorite team is meghan and cheyne (sp?). They seem like a nice couple. And they are good at the race (both physical and mental stuff). I know some might have thought he wasn't that nice last episode. But i didn't mind what he did. He had every right to be upset that the one guy would not go down the ladder. And while i think he could/should have explained that they were taking a taxi (after they said they would work the globbies). I don't think he was required to do so. He maybe just didn't go about exactly right.  Although that said, the only reason the couple agreed to work with the globbies was because they knew they were just gonna follow them anyways!

As for the gay brothers, i sort of like them. I don't think it was particularly nice that they stole the Miss America team's taxi. but i don't hate them for it. The taxi driver agreed to do it. And really shouldn't it be the taxi driver who has some sort of loyalty. I mean if you agree to drive someone, then aren't you sort of obligated to do what you said you'd do?  Anyhow my bigger problem with the brothers is a) listening to them bicker all the time. And b) they actually aren't that good at the race. I still remember them not even trying that simple math equation and giving their calculator to the poker chicks. And last night they couldn'd do the kayaking.  They seem nice enough. And i wouldn't be furious if they won. But they just don't seem that
great.

I think my first 3-D experience may have been a special showing of one CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON or REVENGE OF THE CREATURE on tv back in the late 70s or early 80s. Had to go to 7-11 or some such place to pick up the glasses. Don't recall if it was effective or not, but it was fun.

And I'd like to congratulate my youngest brother, Jay, for completing the Ironman Triathlon in Tempe, Arizona, yesterday. I just checked his stats on the Ironman (http://ironman.com/) site, and can't really tell what "place" he finished in, but still he did complete the race which consisted of:

A 2.4 mile swim followed by
A 112 mile bike ride/race followed by
A 26.2 mile run (marathon)

WHEW!!

That's great. I'm curious, how long does it take to bike 112 miles?

I think i could definitely do the swimming. Not sure about the biking. That sounds like a lot. I for sure could not do the running, since i've never run before.

Here are my brother's timings - which I'm guessing are very close to average - if not slightly above average:

SWIM: 1:50:20
BIKE: 6:55:49
RUN: 5:12:12

I used to swim a lot. so i know i could easily do 2 hours of swimming non-stop. it's funny, but i have been biking everyday for months and yet 7 hours of biking sounds really tough. Much harder than the swimming. I think it would depend on the wind. If there was no wind and a few hills going down ...

Does your brother train in all of these 3 fields all year?

I saw HOUSE OF WAX on a re-release in the mid 1970's, I think.

I think we also saw BLAZING STEWARDESSES or some such in 3-D at the drive in theatre.

Annette in 3-D?!!!   Nobody could sit in the first two rows.

Although that said, today i could do 0 hours swimming and 0 hours biking.
Even though my cold is over, i still feel slightly crappy. Very low energy. Not that steady on my feet. Last night i had to do to a birthday dinner for my brother-in-law and i actually had to hold my head up with my arm. How pathetic is that!

My Husband Makes Movies is definitely in - I don't know Only With You well enough, but I don't think it's there and Sebastian definitely isn't.  The cast, for the most part, is excellent.  The mixing up of real life and fantasy is part of the Fellini original.

One of the new songs, Cinema Italiano - I have no way of knowing, but I'd bet it was something they filmed in June at the last minute - it's so 80s and Madonna-esque and although the usual teens are drooling over the song itself, I thought it was pretty bad.  The fast editing occurs only in the musical numbers - I'd say it's not quite as frenetic as Chicago was but it probably is.

SPOILER WARNING!!!

I do not like non-elimination races--not at this late stage of the race, anyhoo.  It just seems to be a cheat.  But at least now there's a chance--no matter how slight--that the Globtrotters (who I now truly detest) will be bumped out of the final three.

I found several (or at least two, LOL) of the teams' behaviors last night abhorrent.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the Gay Boys, either.  Their bickering is getting on my nerves.  Brian needs to grow a pair while his wife, Miss America, needs to stop losing steam everytime she has to do a challenge.  And Barbie is schizo--plotting to share bad info on the one hand but then wanting to form an alliance with the Globtrotters.  At this point, I'm really only rooting for the blond guy.

Sometimes people I burn DVDs for can't play them on their DVD players, but they will work on either their PCs, X-Boxes or Sony Playstations.  I think it has to do with DVD+R vs DVD-R disc formats.

Whatever soap is playing in the background, YOUNG & RESTLESS or BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL, it's the one about LA Fashion - if there is any such thing - and has a character Brooke who whispers all her lines, is killing off Betty White today. We Are In France, and Boy Are My Arms Tired!

Actually it is my legs that are really tired this morning.   I went to bed at about nine, and, at the time, we were still in port.  At ten, when they started the engines I woke up thinking we were having an earthquake (seaquake?).  After I figured out where I was and what was going on, I fell back asleep and slept very soundly.  I woke up sometime in the night, wandered off to the bathroom, and then when I got back into bed I wondered what time it was.  So, I reached over and turned on the light on the nightstand to see what time the clock read.  The clock read 10:35????  How could I possibly have slept so soundly and only thirty-five minutes had passed.  I knew it wasn’t 10:35 in the morning because it was pitch dark out.  So, then I laid awake far too long trying to figure out if I had read the sailing time incorrectly, but that still didn’t make sense.  The thing I didn’t bother to do (I AM A IDIOT) was go over to the desk and check my watch.  Because then I would have realized that the battery in the clock died at 10:35.  So, instead I dreamed all night about clocks and time and being late.  The only way I managed to figure it out was at 8:00, when we docked in Marseille and I looked over at it still said 10:35.

How depressing, when I left my cabin this morning, there was a letter in my cabin e-mail with all the details of disembarking from the ship on Wednesday, my transfer to the airport, and my luggage tags for leaving the ship.  That is always a sure sign that the cruise is just about over.  Tomorrow we will have to have our bags packed and out in the hall before we go to dinner.  And then I will have to be up Wednesday morning at 4:30 a.m.; because I will be disembarking at 6:10 for the airport.  Well, of course, there is also the small matter of clearing customs at the ship, before I can transfer to the airport.  It is amazing that a ten day cruise, that you plan on for so many months, can suddenly be over so quickly.  I have just now gotten to the point where I know which direction to turn when I get off the elevator, so that I don’t end up wandering the wrong side of the ship.  I have just now gotten to the point that the dining staff knows me when I come in, the wine stewards have figured out that I don’t drink, and the servers in the buffet know that I always ask for two scoops of scrambled eggs for breakfast, instead of one.

I have also figured out what areas of the ship are nice for relaxing, and which areas are good for listening to music in the afternoon or the evening.  I have figured out which members of our 640-member little family will say good morning or afternoon, which ones would love to have you joined them for a meal and a chat, and which ones to avoid at all costs.  A friend asked me if I liked the small ship better than the large ship.  It is hard to decide.  There are certainly advantages to both.  The large ships offer you all of the non-stop events and shows to keep you going night or day, but they also provide you with two thousand strangers who you seldom see more than once or twice during the cruise.  On this smaller ship, you see the same persons several times a day, and when you run into some of them ashore, you instantly know that they are from the same ship.  I think if I had my choice, I would take a smaller ship again, but one that didn’t have non-stop days in port.  There is something nice about being at sea for twenty four hours at a time, when you have nothing more important to do than eat and read and nap.  The different port every day takes you out of the world of cruising, and instead puts you in the world of a floating hotel.  I think I prefer a combination of the two.  The sights that you get to explore are certainly the magic of the vacation, but the time onboard ship is like the icing on the cake.

OH YEA, FRANCE!

The one draw back of traveling my cruise ship is that you don’t end up arriving in the middle of the city.  Some times, like Rome, you are 45 miles away from the city in Civitavecchia.  Other cities you actually arrive in that city, but exactly near anything that you want to see.  Such is the case of Marseille.  We docked at a very nice pier.  I could see one of the cathedrals near by, but there didn’t appear to be anyway to get across the freeway that divided the pier from the city.  So, in my continued effort to abuse my legs, my hips, my back, and my feet; I set out on foot.  Well, after crossing this vast wasteland of nothingness and construction sites (what the Hell were they building?), I finally saw a big set of steps leading up to this old fortress.  So, I went up the steps followed the path around …. and around, and finally arrived at the local marina.  Now, there is no way any other city could match the beauty of some of the yachts in Monte Carlo; but I defiantly have never seen so many boats crammed together in one marina.  There were so many masts sticking up that harbor that it looked like the olds day in New York when all of the buildings had a mass of TV antenna.  Well, I walked and I walked, but I didn’t find very many shops.  There were lots and lots or restaurants and outdoor cafes, but not really any stores.  After hiking for another half hour, I came to a very busy area of the city that was set up with a beautiful old-fashioned carousel and a Ferris wheel, and lots and lots of little sidewalk booths, most of them selling manger scenes, crèches, and Christmas figures of Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus.  The amazing thing was each of these canvas-covered booths all seemed to have identical stuff for sale.  Oh there were a few booths selling picture frames, or hand-painted mirrors for sale, but most of them were selling the identical Christmas figures.  And there wasn’t one menorah in the bunch.  So, after wandering through all these booths (I will never make fun of Holiday Bazaars at church again) I grabbed a cab and came back to the ship.  And that was the extent of my visit to France!

Tonight we sailed for Majorca at 6:00 p.m.; and for the first time during this voyage we have very rough water.  My fellow travelers and I have been trying to walk down the hallways without following on our collective asses, and so far we seem to have made it.  I keep waiting for a handy Boy Scout to offer to walk me down the corridor to my cabin.  But since this cruise seems to be lacking in Boy Scouts, I think I will stagger my way back to my cabin and watch TV.

Good Night!

It also turns out we can't really inspect the septic system since the house has been unoccupied for so long.  The "good" news (relatively speaking) is that even if we need an entirely new system, with the attendant filtration field, it's "only" 10K.  Funny how in a deal like this 10K sounds like chicken feed.

I will buy the archive if I win the PowerBall on Wednesday, but I will have to get my bookshelves fixed.  I was just reading Frances' letter to Wes on the Tribute site - the one she wrote when she "left" the TV station for good in September of 1964.  Wonder what kind of settlement she ended up with?  She seems to say she has the basis of a lawsuit if her terms are met....

I know Edith talked about hearing the executives talking while she relaxed on the lanai at her hotel......Jean didn't waste any  time jumping on the bandwagon, but the letter to Wes makes it seem like there was at least a friendship there already, and Jean and Frances and the animals planning a trip to Florida after Christmas....

Just after visiting Jean's home plantation in Virginia no doubt, before it was sold for a pittance and turned into a  hotel.  Must have been why Jean's mom Lucy worked at the Link-Belt Plant over on Shadeland Avenue.

My first 3-D was COMIN' AT YA which inaugurated the revival of the 3-D craze in the early 1980s. It was then that theaters began booking a lot of the 1950s 3-Ds between engagements of new 3-D movies. That's when I saw HOUSE OF WAX, GORILLA AT LARGE, DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. I kept hoping they'd book KISS ME KATE, but none of them ever did even though I requested it.

I think that this was the first real 3-D that I saw, also.  I remember watching the 3-D "Third Rock From the Sun" episode that featured Randy Newman's song, "Life Has Been Good To You," from his musical version of Faust.  I loved what they did on the episode!

And I am looking forward to seeing James Cameron's AVATAR.  Initially, I dismissed it as a video game come to life through CGI, but with every new preview that is released it looks more and more astounding.  I am hoping the 3-D works well with it, too.

This looks real interesting.  Hopefully, the story won't be stupid and the only reason to go would be the special effects...not that that hasn't happened in the movies before. ::)

When I got in from lunch, the Blu-ray of IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA: A VERY SUNNY CHRISTMAS had arrived, so instead of having a day off, I went ahead and watched it.

It's hysterical. I've never seen a second of the series, but this Christmas special with these lunatics was hilarious. There is one segment where the characters evolve into the old Rankin-Bass claymation cartoon as they hack Danny DeVito to pieces. Priceless.

Then I noticed that last night's THREE RIVERS was already up on HD Showcase on Demand, so I watched that. Good episode and some excellent backstory on Andy's earlier life and ties to crooks.

I finished the afternoon watching some of THE 39 STEPS on TCM-HD. I had just watched the DVD a couple of months ago, so it didn't hold my interest all that well. I did notice that TCM-HD is showing the original 1934 version of THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, and since I haven't seen it in quite some time (off an old public domain VHS tape that I own), I have set it to record so I can see it the best it can look. Maybe that'll help me like it more.

Priceless.

I keep telling everyone on this site how fantastic and utterly insane this series is. Season Two is the weakest, I think, because they were still fitting Danny deVito into the mix, and Seasons One, Three and Four run the gamut of hilarity and rudeness, from parodies of AMERICAN IDOL to musical theatre. Season Two is still very funny and I'm amazed at the things they pull off. I think the one I laughed the hardest over was the one where Danny DeVito kept setting his daughter Dee on fire during a desperate attempt to make her a heroine on the local news.

I did my early errand and upon my return, I had an e-mail re the Holy Grail release - said e-mail gave me an instant headache - it was from the guy who's actually the head of it all, so that was good, and I simply picked up the phone and called him and we spent thirty minutes going over each and every note, coming to terms on each, and now I am implementing all the changes, hopefully for the final time.  It almost looked like we would have to change our master, but in the end he was nice and said he did not want me to incur that expense, which was very thoughtful.  I'm now praying we can be approved by tomorrow or certainly before everyone goes away for Thanksgiving, especially since everything was agreed to on the phone and the changes, while I disagree with some of them, are all text-related and I'm just doing them.

Kroger was very busy this afternoon, but I was able to get everything for what we're cooking for Thanksgiving dinner except the turkey.  We've ordered a fresh one from our favorite butcher shop and will pick it up Wednesday.  We only have to do the turkey & stuffing, green beans, sweet potatoes, and gravy.  Others are bringing everything else.

Tomorrow, I work on the house!

I've been looking for it, but can't seem to find it.  However, I believe it was either from "The Joy of Cooking" or an issue of "Better Homes & Gardens".  However...

I have made it before, it really is just oranges - including a generous amount of the zest - and fresh cranberries chopped and chopped and chopped - or just whirred together in a food processor for a bit.  Mint is optional.

Alas, after the email I received earlier today, I'm not sure now would be a good time to call my mother... :-\

In the meantime, here's a basic version courtesy of the New York Times:

Quote

1 bag fresh cranberries

1 whole navel orange, preferably organic, skin included, washed and cut into chunks

1/2 cup shelled pecans

1/3 cup mild honey, such as clover

Place all the ingredients in a food processor and pulse, then blend until you have a uniform, very finely chopped mixture with a crunchy texture. Chill until ready to serve.

Yield: Serves eight.

Advance preparation: This is best made on Thanksgiving Day, but if really pressed for time, you could make it a day ahead.

And, yes, you do process the WHOLE orange.  The bitterness of the rind is balanced out with the tartness of the cranberries and the sweetness of the orange flesh and juice (and honey or sugar).

Had a lovelier than lovely lunch with Beth Malone.  Came back to yet one more e-mail requesting two minor changes for track titles - I ended up talking to the woman who is doing all this stuff, and I made the changes for her, even though I really didn't have to (the head of all this and I had agreed on everything this morning) - it seemed to make her happy, and I just asked that we now move forward swiftly to the only word I wish to hear: Approved.  I sent them the once-again revised inlay card, and asked them to approve as quickly as possible.  We'll see what happens, but I'm really hopeful it will be tomorrow.

I watched two episodes of SUPERNATURAL on Blu-ray. One involved monsters who weren't supernatural at all. They were children of incest who had been surviving in the walls and basement of an old house. In some ways, it was scarier and creepier than the usual demons, witches, and ghosts that are a part of the series.

The next episode featured old magicians trying to make it in a world than was more about flash and big effects than the kind of magic they were used to performing. Barry Bostwick and John Ruberstein were the guest stars. (I believe John's son was also a guest star playing his dad transformed into a younger man.)

Cillaliz, I don't really dislike the Globetrotters either. Yes, they have done a couple of things I didn't care for, but other TAR teams have done much, much worse in past shows. It is just that all of the teams this round are all so "nice" that anyone who does anything even slightly not nice, looks like an ogre.

As I mentioned before, the blonded couple are probably the best all around players, followed by the brothers.

The Miss America and hubby are...well, the hubby is good, the wife, not so much.

The Globetrotters...the shorter one is good...the taller one, maybe not always as much...although both have had some really "duh" moments.

I will be happy with whoever wins.
