And now, as promised, the Holy Grail release that has had me over the moon since I first found out it was ours - which was about four months ago.  You know the drill - $19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (GREAT value for money on this one - seventy-eight minutes of glorious music) paid directly via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  And now - here it is:

“THE BELLS AND THE BANJOS”

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition soundtrack – the world premiere release of two classic Elmer Bernstein scores on one CD :

LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER

and

A GIRL NAMED TAMIKO

At long last, two of Elmer Bernstein’s most beautiful scores come to CD.  Written during a period when he was creating one brilliant score after another, Love With The Proper Stranger and A Girl Named Tamiko rank with his all-time best.

Love With The Proper Stranger was released by Paramount Pictures in 1963, and reunited Bernstein with director Robert Mulligan, for whom he’d just scored the classic To Kill A Mockingbird, and, earlier, The Rat Race and Fear Strikes Out.  Starring Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen, Love With The Proper Stranger was a hit with audiences and critics – its story was fairly adult for 1963, with its frank treatment of a girl who’s had a one-night stand and ended up pregnant.  It walks a fine line between comedy and drama, from a harrowing scene with a back-alley doctor, to Wood and McQueen’s awkward attempts to start a relationship from this rocky beginning.  The stars are absolute perfection, Mulligan directs simply and beautifully, and Arnold Schulman’s screenplay is wonderfully written.

But it’s the score by Bernstein that takes the film to a whole other level, just as his score for To Kill A Mockingbird took that film to a whole other level.  His music is achingly beautiful, filled with longing and loneliness and the stirrings of romance.  His approach to scoring the film was unique – the only actual score cues occur in scenes in which Wood and McQueen appear together – that approach brings focus to their relationship and it works perfectly.   It’s prime Bernstein, and one of his finest scores.

A Girl Named Tamiko came out in 1962 and was also released by Paramount Pictures. John Sturges was Tamiko’s director; he and Bernstein had already worked together on the classic The Magnificent Seven, and the following year Bernstein would score another Sturges classic, The Great Escape.   A Girl Named Tamiko was another film with subject matter that was quite adult for its day.  Laurence Harvey stars as a disillusioned and bitter half Chinese/half Russian photographer living in Japan and doing everything he can to get a visa to live in the United States.   To that end he begins a relationship with a woman he feels can help him achieve his goal (played intensely by Martha Hyer in a terrific performance), but becomes involved with a young highborn Japanese woman named Tamiko (played by France Nuyen) and much drama ensues.   The Japanese scenery is gorgeously photographed and the supporting players are top notch and include Miyoshi Umeki, Gary Merrill, and Michael Wilding.

For this film, Bernstein created one of his most memorable themes, lush and beautiful, and the rest of the score, some of it tinged with an Oriental flavor, is just fantastic. It’s a richly varied score, with many terrific and memorable themes and even though the film may not be remembered today, the score remains a highlight in the Bernstein canon.

The two scores were transferred from the original three-track session tapes and both are presented here in beautiful stereo sound.   Both scores are complete and include cues that did not end up in the film.  The CD runs a very full seventy-eight minutes.

This release is limited to 1500 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the last week of December – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).

In a year filled, for me at least, with wonderful Kritzerland titles, this one takes the cake.  I have yearned for the score to Love With The Proper Stranger since seeing the film in 1963, and what a treat it is to finally bring it to CD - it made the sometimes difficult ordeal of approvals worth it.

And here are the covers side by side - Stranger on the front of the booklet and Tamiko on the back.  Both had horrible poster art, so my designer did a fantastic job coming up with the two themed covers.  And the booklet has other great stills in it.

Good morning, al! I had a long dream, perhaps it was two,  that had me either working my old job at the Miami University Library or Barnes & Noble - it's hard to tell now - but it had to do with the three Rodgers & Hart muscals for Helen Ford, "Dearest Enemy," "Peggy Ann," and "Chee-Chee," and collecting research for a restoration. My friend Bruce Pomahac was in the dream as well, and suddenly I was in a structure like the London subway with one of my actresses from community theatre days, Snooky Barton, who was dressed in this outrageous South American costume, then I was in an auditorium, working on "Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living In Paris," and the band kept misbehaving, and the director - who may have been one of my college directors but I'm not sure now - kept telling me to get the band under control. After the performance, he and I were talking about how well the production went and his comment was something like, it's good the band sounded great because they behaved horribly.  I'm sure I knew everyone in the band but I work up and I've now forgotten.

Today, MOST HAPPY FELLA; I need to finish up this show and nake some oney: health insurance is due and next month, estimated taxes. And Christmas, too. Oy!

It absolutely boggles my mind that Elmer Bernstein never won an Oscar for those brilliant 60s scores of his. Sure, he got one for THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (for doing what, I'm not quite sure), but the ones he SHOULD have won for never brought him the prize. Sometimes the fates are very cruel.

Favorite Motown songs:

My first college boy friend and I had a favorite song: "My Guy" sung by Mary Wells. Even though I haven't laid eyes on him since the late 1960s, I think of him every time I hear that song.

Other favorite Motown songs: "You Can't Hurry Love," "You Keep Me Hanging On," "Heat Wave," "My Girl," "I Can't Help Myself."

Today I continue with my LOST marathon work project. I guess they're saving the majority of the bonus features for the last disc in the set. I haven't gotten there yet (obviously), but I'm guessing some of that "Lost University" stuff is going to be BD-Live instead of embedded on the disc. Usually BD-Live isn't even operational until the disc streets for the public, so there's no way to ever review that material. I hope if LU is a BD-Live feature, they've already activated it.

TOD:  one of my favorite unsung Motown writer duos is Lambert and Potter.  They had some minor hits in the mid-1970's, notably "Ashes to Ashes" by the 5th Dimension.  But I have always loved their "Love Music," which had 3 very different recordings by The Four Tops, Paul Revere & the Raiders and (can you guess?) Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77.

The Mystery of the Missing Phone has been solved.  Apparently, just before I went to bed I went in the DVD/Blu-Ray closet to find a movie for the bedroom and I left the phone there.

Order placed.

It's $23.73, Druxy.

You do know that all the information you were asking for is in the first sentence of the announcement post - how much, where to send, etc.

Oh!  Now, you expect me to read, too.

Humph!

I've finished the Moross score and Act Two Scene One of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. The copyist, Ben salisbury, for MHF  is doing a spectacular job and I'm proofing the score with a huge smile on my face. It's just beautiful to look at. Poor Ben got lots of scathing notes from me on the first pass - as  Dan,the copyist on the Moross score, will, too, very shortly -  and he did everything I asked with good humor and skill. I won't settle for Finale-ized music that doesn't have a visual appeal on the page.

So, I'm trying to decide what I will watch tonight. I'm thinking about the HANSEL & GRETEL from 1954 with Anna Russell as the vocie of the Witch.

I ran over to the corner market. The Christmas tree vendors, who set up yearly at the corner of 82nd Street and Amsterdam, are arriving and the corner smell like fresh pine. Very Christmas-y.

On the bad side of things, my HMO sent me a statement for a visit in March (!) for $267.00 and I have no idea why the HMO didn't cover it. I'm sure it's an error, but, of course, no one's in who can answer my inquiry until Monday.

Actually it's very convenient (except when an ATM eats your card). Of course, it has been infuriating, but that is the only time it's happened to me in, what, 20 years of having an ATM card. So, that's a pretty good average of working correctly.

I spent all evening on LOST. I watched the remaining four episodes. The last one was 87 1/2 minutes, so it was like another entire episode.

I had COMPLETELY forgotten the entire submarine plot point with Sawyer, Juliet, and Kate. I had also forgotten that Mark Pellegrino (who's currently playing Lucifer on SUPERNATURAL this season) played Jacob in the season finale episode.

MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE is a faux-investigative ABC series from the early 1980s, and the episode in question of called "The Dharma Initiative" as the reporters try their best to poke around a few scant clues about this mysterious organization. Fairly fun little feature. I also got a chuckle during station identification when ABC advertised "Coming soon -- new show -- MATT HOUSTON."

How well I remember Matt Houston!

Before we hit the road, we stopped for breakfast.  I was originally thinking of heading back to The Waffle House, but since I also wanted to make one more stop in Carytown, I figured we should eat at someplace in The Fan.  At first, I was thinking that Joe's Inn would be a good place... Then I thought that Can-Can would be good for a petit déjeuner... Then I thought why not try Sidewalk Cafe.  I used to live a few blocks away from there, and had many a weekend breakfast/brunch there.  Also, my favorite waitress in the world - who I've mentioned here on HHW before - also used to work there, and, maybe, just maybe she would be in this morning, well...

As soon as I walked in the door, I saw Edwina behind the bar.  She saw me walk in.  She screamed.  -I think I may have screamed too.  And a few minutes later, we were exchanging a very long overdue hug.  The last time we had seen each other was literally right before I moved to New York City four and a half years ago.  I had my "last" breakfast in Richmond at Sidewalk Cafe.  And, yes, we were both tearing up. Just a little bit.

Over the course of the next hour, and between bites of my huge breakfast - I ordered my favorite, "Cajun Hash" - we caught up on each other's lives.  We also realized that we have known each other for 25 years!  My first restaurant meal in Richmond was at Stella's, where Edwina used to work, and for the next 20 years, I more or less followed her from restaurant to restaurant: Stella's to Joe's Inn to Sidewalk Cafe.  She "adopted" me, I became one of her "babies".  It was nice to see my "mama" again this morning.

She refused to let me pay for our meal this morning, but after a quick run to the store up the street, I did leave her a "tip": two Hershey Bars with Almonds, and two Mr. Goodbars.  :)

Well, I had wondered how this weekend's concert presentation of The Music Man was going to go down at the Kennedy Center, and after checking some friend's status updates on Facebook, well...  Here's one of them:

...just returned from an embarrassingly bad concert version of The Music Man with the NSO Pops. OK, Shirley Jones is 75 and can't really sing anymore, but what is her son Patrick Cassidy's excuse? Rebecca Luker was magnificent, but the rest? OY!

...The other "reports" were along the same lines. :-\

Forgive me for not remembering, but is it DAYS OF OUR LIVES some of you watch?  Betsy just found out that little girl Lauren Boles of that show is our sister-in-law's cousin!

Sorry, DR JMK, that's a terrible LA-based soap. I only watch these days ONE LIFE TO LIVE, which broadcasts from NYC. When ALL MY CHILDREN moves to LA, only ONE LIFE and AS THE WORLD TURNS Will be shooting here.

OH!

And since I was not taking the bus back up to NYC this time, I was able to bring back some extra stuff with me... Like my pre-lighted, three-foot high Christmas Tree!

:)

*And, yes, it's already set up in the not-really-big-enough-to-be-a-bay-window window. ;)

Good evening all., I am home from my trip to my parents'.  It was a nice holiday, but I am very glad to be home.   Boo was pretty upset that I had been gone and it took her a while to calm down.  She's been on my lap for about 2 hours now and has relaxed and is very happy.

DR JMK, I have beeen following the news reports of your neighbor.  Really sounds like she was targeted...her front door was unlocked (apparently not unusual) so it could have been someone she knew..or someone she didn't knwo at all...very scary

Saturday morning greetings!  Richard and I are getting ready to head to Lima this afternoon for rehearsal for tomorrow's ordination service and a festive dinner at the home of the church's senior warden.  Rob is meeting us there, so some travel vibes for him as he drives from Michigan would be appreciated.

Do you happen to know if the church's "senior warden" knows DR Laura's "game warden"?

This visually arresting movie is terrific, actually.  It took me about forty minutes to figure it all out and get the players straight, but it's a wonderful story.

and one of favorite Motown singles was Irene Ryan doing "In Just No Time At All."

This actually was my audition song for "The Brain From Planet X," in which I was cast! ;D

For the first time in its history, Portland is under a boil order for its water.  I won't go into detail about this or other tribulations we personally have faced the past few days, but suffice it to say Betsy has said she is about to pray to her G-d that the 10 plagues cease soon.  ;)

Finished part one of the long movie - I thought it was great.  Then I went to the imdb to see the comments and, as always, unbelievably stupid comments having little to do with the movie that Mr. Woo made and more to do with the real history.  It's a MOVIE.

I just watched "Paragraph 175" from Netflix.  I just checked Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Paragraph-175-Rupert-Everett/dp/B00005YUP1/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1259481482&sr=8-1) and it's no longer available!  The least expensive used copy is $42.29.
