Title: THE LEOPARD-SPOTTED DICKIE
Post by: bk on November 29, 2009, 12:02:58 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were leopard-spotted, and now it is time for you to post until the leopard-spotted cows come home - they'll be home just as soon as the cow-spotted leopards come home.

We are up and about for this milestone day in Richard's encore career.  On a regular Sunday, we'd have been on the road for an hour already, so this seems pretty relaxed.

Sunday is a work day.  And I have a class so i will be home late.  And my car is going in the shop, so my nephew is driving us to work today.

Oy!

I am glad DRMBARNUM's envelope arrived at his home yesterday....and that he enjoys the contents.

Yesterday I received from Amazon.com (after some delay) a box set entitled Classic Sci Fi TV.  Some of the contents I have on other DVD's but much of it was new to me.

I watched Scott McCloud Space Angel - which includes music from WAR OF THE SATELLITES, a completely useless and self important show called CAPTAIN Z-RO  (there are 24 episodes of this thing written by and starring Roy Steffens and at least featuring a nice looking sidekick played by Bruce Haynes), and other delights which I will be watching tomorrow while my car is in the shop and I am trapped at home.

Not sure how much snow there will be tonight (i'm hoping none).

It depends how much falls as rain. But they are now only saying a cm or 2 a day (this week). So i will have to find my boots probably. But at least i won't have to shovel!

Good morning, all! I am awake, the laundry's in the washers and I will shortly mop and vacuum while everything's in the dryers. This morning I got from Brent Barrett one more chart needing an "additional orchestration" for his Birdland gig on Dec 13 and 14. The one inquiry I've not had answered is, when's the band rehearsal?

So, I guess part of my day will be laying out the five charts I need to do for Brent's show, and finishing up THE MOST HAPPY FELLA Act Two. At some point I ned to look up some Lehman Engel thoughts on the Lena Horne show JAMAICA for Kate Baldwin, who's singing at Feinstein's on Dec 13, and email them to her.

DR Ginny, congrats to DH Richard today! I hope the ceremony is festive and his ordination leaves no scars. Please tell him I send my best wshes.

Back to work!

DR GEORGE I had mixed feelings about Paragraph 175 - but then I had to tell myself, these are real people telling real stories, not actors reading made up stuff.  It was difficult to watch in some parts.

With nothing but bonus features left on LOST, I hope to have the review finished and posted by the time I go to bed tonight. Not sure if I'll be able to finish all of those bonuses this afternoon. LOST UNIVERSITY may be a huge database. I just don't know as I haven't explored it at all yet. I was saving it for last and watching the other self-contained featurettes on various aspects of the show.

I really think I fell asleep just a few minutes, if not seconds, after getting into bed last night.  And a solid eight and a half hours later, I woke up. :)

I did spend a bit of time in bed listening to NPR - I always tune in for "The Puzzler" on "Weekend Edition" - but then I put on my floor and started my day. Some cleaning, some grocery shopping, some cooking, some breakfasting (alas, not "on croissants and café au lait" - anyone else get that reference?), some more cleaning, and some laundry-ing.  All in all, a very good morning so far.  And I since it is such a nice day - temps in the upper-50s, I'm gonna try to get out of here in a bit and spend some time in the sun.

A little excitement in TCB's hood:

4 POLICE OFFICERS SHOT DEAD NEAR WASHINGTON STATE AIR FORCE BASE (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,577691,00.html)

Quote
SEATTLE —  Four police officers were shot dead in an ambush at a Washington state coffee house, a sheriff's official said Sunday.
The attack occurred east of McChord Air Force Base in Parkland, Wash.

Authorities said two suspects entered Forza Coffee Co. and opened fire on the four police officers who were sitting inside, Fox affiliate q13fox.com reported.

Police are now searching for the two suspects, one white male and one black male, q13Fox.com reported.

The officers were going over paper work before starting their day shift when they were killed, q13fox.com reported.

"It was just a flat out ambush," Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer told The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash.

Investigators believe the officers were targeted, and it was not a robbery, Troyer said.

As Jose may have heard if he's spoken with his friend Jim whose firm did the videos, sometimes comedy is (a) very hard; and (b) all about timing.  Jim's firm BTW got a really nice mention in the two Broadway World articles

Bravo to Fred!  Bravo to Jan!  Bravo to Jim and his firm!

Have you notepaper sturdy enough to withstand the poison pen?

Woody's contribution to today's cultural ambiance was remarking on the song playing on the radio on his drive home:

She said I’m going out with my girlfriends
Margaritas at the Holiday Inn
Lord have mercy, my only thought
Was Tequila makes her clothes fall off

Now if rhyming "thought" with "fall off" makes you cringe, wait till you hear the "tablecloth" - "clothes fall off" rhyme!

I did have a few more bonus features to watch on LOST. There was an interesting day with Nestor Carbonell who plays Richard Alpert on the show. It was the last day of shooting, and since Richard plays parts in both the 1977 and 2007 sequences of the last episode, he had to be there from before 7 a.m. in the morning until the production wrapped at 2:20 a.m. the next morning. He did look exhausted by the end but everyone seemed thrilled to have another season finished and looking forward to the last one.

I had weird dreams last night, too. I dreamed I was in college trying to find out what the required books were for the classes I was taking, but not being able to buy them because I had no credit card. It was a MISERABLY unhappy dream; the idea of showing up to class on the first day and not being prepared is what I call a terrible nightmare.

Back to LOST bonus features. Like the other sets, there is a succession of behind-the-scenes featurettes on various stunts for half a dozen or so of the episodes. Always interesting to see this.

The one item I couldn't explore was LOST University which, as I suspected, does not go on-line util street date - December 8th. So, all I have are the publicity releases describing what it is, but there's no way I can test functionality or content until well after the review goes up later tonight.

Next, I watched another episode of SUPERNATURAL from the fourth season Blu-ray set. This was the one about a siren working wiles on unsuspecting townsfolk causing them to kill their nearest and dearest. Naturally the siren comes after Dean and Sam. A very good episode.

I was going to start MONK next, but I noticed on the DVR that I had recorded last Thursday night's SUPERNATURAL rerun, and so I started watching it. It was about the arrival of the first of the Four Horsemen - War. He had turned a town upon itself by making everyone believe the others were demons. I only got about halfway through it, so I'll finish it when I go back down.

Because of the rambling second half, the screen writers had a chance to tighten up the story - I hope they did.

We are back from Lima, where Richard was duly ordained to the Anglican Province of America priesthood.  In addition to the local parishioners, we were joined today by members of my extended family and his, by friends from Middletown, by representatives from other Lima churches, by the priest from our former church in Cincinnati and his family, and by one of Richard's seminary classmates who flew in from Florida just for the occasion.  Of course, the Bishop and his wife were there from Indiana, too.  The potluck luncheon afterwards was fantastic - even my "extra crispy" pecan pie disappeared!

Done with Red Cliff Part Two - these two films are everything Bravehart wishes it could have been.  This is an EPIC in the same way the great 70mm epics of old were.  It is filled with trademark John Woo bits (but with swords instead of guns), and the performances are wonderful.  Don't know if it's available on DVD in region one, but if it is get it.  But be warned - for the US theatrical release they combined both parts into one 150 minute movie, so you're basically missing an entire film.  Don't, repeat don't get that.

Well, now I've seen a film version of UNCLE SILAS abd I still think the heroine is an absolute twit. I would have brained the evil governess with a candlestick as soon as all hell began breaking loose and Uncle Silas would have been dead by the time he threw his tantrums at me. God, she was a passive twit. Even her escape from madness and murder is engineered by the gamekeeper's daughter and the "true love" whose arms she ends up in is a complete cypher. I think Le Fanu did better with his short stories. Peter O'Toole, looking like a really jaded Ted Chapin, was fun and the ending, wherein Silas' son Dudley beats to death the evil Madame la Rougierre while thinking he's killing the heroine, is a hoot.

This, I think, like Daylight Savings Time, just gets earlier and earlier and earlier each year - it's pathetic.  I believe they used to have it, in the classic days, a couple of weeks before Christmas or at least in the MONTH in which Christmas occurs.

The minimalist Christmas decor is up.
2 strings of multi lights for the front window.
Small Radko tree decorated with copper dipped leaves, glass pinecones, glass hearts, silver disco balls, 2009 ornament, peace sign ornament, and my Murano tree topper.
1 table with a Santa, a pinecone from outside, and a just purchased Nutcracker from Germany.
Last but not least the 3 Santa hats always go on the white ceramic tiger and leopards.

And I'm done with the holiday ambiance.

Has anyone seen THIS (http://www.broadwayworld.com/videoplay.cfm?colid=87600) Broadway.com video??  It features a segment with the WSMA Brent Barrett and he talks about his upcoming show at Birdland and sings songs (in the "studio") from his brand new Christmas CD (from Kritzerland)!  His segment starts at about 8:40. :D

Here are the lovely Broadway World articles on the two-parter A LITTLE SITE MUSIC, or EVERY DAY A LITTLE NET.

http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/STAGE_TUBE_A_Little_Site_Music_Act_Two_20000101

And this from Frank Rizzo, theatre critic for the Hartford Courant:

http://blogs.courant.com/curtain/2009/11/thumbs-up-on-youtube-spoof-on.html

And this one's a blog I'd never seen before, but it's very very nice:

http://www.lemonwade.com/2009/11/25/a-little-site-music-brilliant/

As Jose may have heard if he's spoken with his friend Jim whose firm did the videos, sometimes comedy is (a) very hard; and (b) all about timing.  Jim's firm BTW got a really nice mention in the two Broadway World articles

Congrats to FJL and Company on all the accolades!

We could use some major vibage.  I alluded to some of the challenges we've been facing.  Well tonight our main drain out to the sewer starting backing up.  This could be a very expensive repair.

Finished my second movie on Blu-Ray and am done with viewing.  So, I'll just take a hot shower and listen to music and do stuff.

So... After cleaning the kitchen and doing three loads of laundry, I went ahead and headed out for a walk.  It was a gorgeous afternoon, and even though the sun was already low in the sky at 3:00(?!?!?), I managed to get a good hour and a half of daylight before I hopped on the subway for the ride back uptown.  And during the course of my three-mile walk, I was happy to see that two of my favorite restaurants had finally re-opened after some lengthy renovations. :)

Congrats to DH Richard!

*And, just remember... As some health officials have "warned"... Purel not only kills the "bad" germs, but it also kills the "good" ones.

In the meantime, try to refrain from touching your face - especially your eyelids - with your fingers.  Or something like that.  ::)

Nope. I just want to get my college recitals transferred to DVD, so they're "homegrown".  I guess we could barter mug(s). ;)

I'm feeling a little better tonight. I've been relaxing a bit.  I also did some work on something I've been stressed out about.  I'll easily be able to finish what I need to do at the office tomorrow. So that's a big relief.  I should go to bed, but I'm not tired yet.

I bought a USB turntable on sale yesterday.   I've been meaning to get back to my project of getting my dad's old records on tape for a couple years.  The other set up I had didn't work very well.   Does anyone have a good suggestion for software to clean up the fuzz or does it come with the turntable...I haven't opened it yet

I did  find a Toshiba 26 inch tv for the waiting room.  It's nothing fancy, but I don't need fancy in the waiting room, just something to help people pass time.   I do need to mount it and I don't understand much about how to do that.  I want a mount that swivels so you can move it if you need a different angle to see the tv.    The specs I saw said I need a VERSA 100x200, but I have no idea what that means.  Can anyone explain that to me?  Thanks

I am so happy that I"m down to one more thing to buy for the office.  I want a little writing desk for the library.  Just enough for a laptop or a monitor if there is something that I need to show people at the conference table.  It's been nice to be able to hit the sales for everything I need.  I've really done a lot of shopping around and am amazed how much I've saved by doing that.

I'm going to go just a titch over budget on this project, but not much.  I underestimated how much it would cost to do the phone and computer wiring.  I decided to go with the guy who knows what he's doing.  Without phone and/or computer...I can't do my business.  So it's worth it.  But, other than that, I'm pretty much in my  budget.  I'm very pleased about that.  I know it isn't over, but I'm pretty close on the things I need to pay for

I've spent the last two hours beginning the arduous work that is doing an editing road map for an upcoming project.  I have to load all the tracks into iTunes.  Then I put the DVD of the film in the computer and it is so time consuming locating each track - as the music comes up in the film, I then have to go to iTunes and locate it and this is not as simple as it seems, since for the film cues are abbreviated, cut together differently, and the order in which they're recorded has nothing to do with film order.  Fortunately, some of the tracks have slates that are easy to identify, so that helps a little but not always.  In the two hours I worked on it, I got thirty minutes into the film.
