Title: VAGUELY SCOTTISH
Post by: bk on December 03, 2009, 12:06:19 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes felt very Scottish and should be read aloud with a Scottish brogue, and now it is time for you to post until the Scottish cows come home.  They're currently eating some butterscottish pudding.

The notes ponder:

Quote
Book dealers are like no breed known to man – in times of economic catastrophe rather than lower their prices, they raise them. This seems rather inane to me, but what do I know?

In times of economic distress when folks distrust banks, stocks, etc. investment dollars often move to precious metals, gem stones, and collectables (books, art, coins, etc) driving up those market prices.

Well, then, having watched this happen before, I will say those people are idiots - they don't know the hobby, they pay too much, and then, when they're ready to cash in, they can get nowhere near what they paid.  But people don't learn.  And I'm sure the book dealers are happy they don't, but from what I've been hearing, times are very tough for book dealers and smart ones do what they need to do to survive.

Disney's Rapunzel (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398286/)...has anyone heard anything about this?  It's going to have a score by Alan Menken!

Sherlock Holmes

It may be an entertainment in and of itself, but from the previews it doesn't look like they are going for a feel in and of the world of the original books.

Thomas Newman visits a storm drain culvert while exploring Rustic Canyon, where he recorded the sounds used in "It Got Dark." The work also includes canyon residents' reminiscences. (Genaro Molina/Los Angeles Times / November 17, 2009)

Quote
A member of a musical dynasty writes a postcard about the past

Thomas Newman, whose father, uncles and siblings have composed for films, draws on his life for 'It Got Dark,' being performed by the Kronos Quartet and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
...

Nature has often served as a muse for composers. Vivaldi had four seasons. Beethoven had his Sixth Symphony, the "Pastoral." The Talking Heads had "(Nothing but) Flowers."

Newman looked to Rustic Canyon, with its sycamores, sagebrush and sumac, and to the beaches of Venice and Santa Monica, their erstwhile tourist attractions immortalized in postcards and photographs.

"They are little moments in time that are just forgotten," he says. "I wanted to put music up against the photos and other ephemera."

And so he has. His memories and collected "time capsules" have coalesced into "It Got Dark," a 20-minute concerto grosso incorporating sounds from the canyon and oral reminiscences of its residents. It will be performed tonight and Friday by the Kronos Quartet and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Disney Hall.

True - I am very curious, skeptical but curious.

I suspect it will elicit much controversy, so I want to see and judge for myself.

It couldn't be more disappointing than watching Jude Law, under Kenneth Branagh's mis-direction, destroy "Sleuth".

Good morning, all! I will shortly head to Lexington and 50th to visit Tams-Witmark for a couple of hours. Josh Clayton and I are looking over the original orchestra parts for FINIAN'S RAINBOW, partly out of curiosity but mostly because a couple of questions came up during our band rehearsals that I would like to check out before recording the show.

When I get back, it's more tedious work checking out the differences between my Main Report for BABES and the "official" one. So far, we're in synch but the report's one long mother. I've also got band parts to finish up for two rehearsals next week.

TOD: the only films I'm looking forward to seeing are A SINGLE MAN, because the Isherwood novel is glorious and very moving and I'm very curious to see how it's been transformed, and THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, or whatever the title is.

Moonlight Serenade, because of Amy Adams, though I haven't a clue as to what it's about.
My problem lately has been not being able to get to a movie theater. They don't seem to be open at 5 a.m., which is about the only free time I have left.

The only film I'll likelygo to the theater to see will be NINE. All the others I'll catch on Blu-ray or pay cable during the next year. (I'm still catching up with some of last year's Oscar contenders as they arrive on paycable since I didn't buy or rent the Blu-rays. I'm talking mostly about BENJAMIN BUTTON, THE READER, and FROST/NIXON.) It'll likely be a year before I catch some of these films on paycable.

No UPS deliveries this morning so it appears I have another free day on my hand. I think I'll likely watch CORALINE this afternoon. It looks like fun, and as I feel certain it's going to get some Oscar and other awards attention, I'd like to see it before nominations come out.

There are some reruns on tonight, (mostly CW and CBS shows), but there are plenty of new offerings available tonight.

NBC's line-up is featuring new episodes of THE OFFICE/30 ROCK.

ABC has a new FLASHFORWARD and while GREY'S ANATOMY isn't there, there are two episodes of PRIVATE PRACTICE on view.

SURVIVOR is new.

Both BONES and FRINGE have new episodes tonight!

After seeing last year's winner SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and being entertained without being overly impressed, I'd say DOUBT (which wasn't nominated for best film but was my favorite thus far) and MILK were each more deserving of Best Picture in my eyes. I'm looking forward to seeing the others.

Speaking of DOUBT...

If any of youse have the Sundance Channel, they are showing an interesting little documentary called THEATER OF WAR which covers the Public Theater's production of MOTHER COURAGE that Meryl Streep did in 2006.  I started watching it at about a quarter of the way in and I was hooked.  I got to look for the next showing so I can record it.

Last night I tried watching some of the LIZA AT THE PALACE special that's running on PBS, but I could not sit through the pledge break that featured Liza botoxed to the max and a lot of hard sell of the DVD and CD.  During the show itself, Liza does do a bang-up job on her numbers, but it seemed that the sound was slightly out of sync.  That, and Liza's make-up looked a little weird--I think she had sweated off the top half of her face.

Looked at a listing of upcoming releases, and nothing jumps out at me, but without seeing a trailer it is difficult for me to know what might appeal to me.

I have seen the trailers for PRINCESS AND THE FROG and it looks like it might be fun, and I might enjoy HOODWINKED 2: HOOD VS. EVIL. I loved HOODWINKED, so if the sequel is as much fun, then I am there.

I am not even sure what is upcoming in Bollywood that I might like, but of course I look forward to anything that will star John Abraham. He rarely disappoints.

As for the Topic of the Day....

When does "The Princess and the Frog" open nationwide? It's already running here in NYC at The Ziegfeld.  -Disney has also set up a whole "Disney Experience" at the Roseland Ballroom in conjunction with the Ziegfeld engagement.

One movie I'm really forward to doesn't open until next March: Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland".

I'm still looking forward to "Nine". Since I have a very "distant" connection to the movie, I just want to see how everything turned out.

DR elmore - The New York Times currently has some good articles/interviews with Tom Ford and Colin Firth about "A Single Man".

This opening paragraph is... well... something... ;)

"On a recent Wednesday, Mr. Ford walked across a courtyard at the Beverly Hills Hotel to meet a guest for lunch. His stride was deliberate, arms slightly bent to frame his rigid torso. As he approached the table, he removed his tea-colored sunglasses. He smelled like vanilla bean. Slipping into his seat, Mr. Ford tipped his chin to his left shoulder — a conscious gesture to highlight his best side, he later volunteered. He purred hello."

He Wears a Revealing Sort of Restraint (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/06/movies/06firth.html)

On Monday night, I am one of the readers at Rogue Machine Theatre's extremely popular (we ALWAYS sell out the house!!!) Rant & Rave - an ongoing art project, where prose meets voice. Eight writer/performers, a topic and a time limit - this is Chapter 7: Tradition. I was in the first one, last spring - Chapter 1: Money. Four writers in the first half, and four after intermission. Maximum 1500 words/8-10 minutes, depending on the laughs, of course. I LOVE this thing - we do one every month, usually the first Monday. Heck of a good time!!!

For the titles of most compositions, use quotation marks. If Bob Fosse is involved, use jazz hands.

I've probably mentioned this before, but in the *real* AP pronunciation guide that was at Betsy's old radio station, they had one column of words with an adjacent column of pronunciations.  My favorite was this entry:

TOD:

The only film I'll likelygo to the theater to see will be NINE. All the others I'll catch on Blu-ray or pay cable during the next year. (I'm still catching up with some of last year's Oscar contenders as they arrive on paycable since I didn't buy or rent the Blu-rays. I'm talking mostly about BENJAMIN BUTTON, THE READER, and FROST/NIXON.) It'll likely be a year before I catch some of these films on paycable.

I didn't care much for BENJAMIN BUTTON, but THE READER and FROST/NIXON (along with DOUBT) were my favorite movies of last year.

Great writing.

I agree with you, DR Matt.  I wasn't all that impressed with Slumdog, either.

SLUMDOG was a movie of the moment.  5 years from now it will (except for getting the award) be virtually forgotten...like so many other Best Picture winners.

Oh, m'gosh! I do remember Mamie Van Doren - as a young teenager, I sort of remember wanting to be so blond and glamorous and have such a sophisticated name...

I think that is likely the very first time in history that "Mamie Van Doren" and "sophisticated" have appeared in the same sentence.

I learned at Tams-Witmark that my theory on the Entr'Acte and Exit music was incorrect, but it was fun to see the original pit parts and the conductor's book as well as the original, gospel quartet version of "Necessity" before it was redone for the ladies to sing. It was also nice to see several friends there,

After that, I made another stop at the NYPL to check a footnote on Historic Newspapers Online and now I'm home and back to proofing this endless report /history I wrote.

Back from the post office and have more small customs forms.  The guy told me he thinks I'm getting some boxes I shipped overseas back because they had the small customs form rather than the large customs form - they don't weigh enough to need the large customs form but apparently the box I used, which they're saying is a flat rate box can't be used for overseas without the large customs form, even though the postage is correct and the weight is correct for the smaller form.  I'm not going to be happy if this is true, but nothing has come back yet.  Guess I'll have to use different kinds of boxes now.  I can't keep up with their damn rule changes.

If you have never seen or heard of UNTAMED YOUTH, just check out this trailer..you will surely want to see "The Throb of Young Hearts...'

I'd love to have a lot of those early sound musicals, but I'm willing to wait to see if Warner will offer them in a package like they eventually did with the Al Jolson early talkies.

Lunch started late and lasted longer than planned, so I didn't get as much watched this afternoon as I had hoped.

I did watch CORALINE. I watched the 2-D version (3-D is also included, but I wanted my first experience to be with color as accurate as possible and sharpness untinged by the ghosting that sometimes happens with that old anaglyph 3-D technology.

It's in the CORPSE BRIDE realm of weird, somewhat charming but slightly overlong for its story animated films using stop motion animation. I enjoyed it, and if folks are tired of giving Pixar the Best Animated Feature Oscar, it or PONYO could win instead of UP. We'll see.

Second opinions are interesting. Six months ago the dentist in Brentwood told me I needed $8K worth of dental work--and I know that did not include one tooth that will need a veneer. Today's dentist, in Culver City, found two small cavities, but otherwise said that there was nothing urgent. Her prices are LESS THAN HALF that of the dentist in Brentwood. A question regarding treatment occurred to me this afternoon. I phoned her office, asked the question, and was immediately handed over to the dentist herself. The Brentwood dentist charges $110 in 15-minute increments for questions. I am amazed/aghast that there is so much difference in price when the two communities are really only a few miles apart. I've always been willing to pay a bit more for better quality, but I really must question whether there IS a difference in quality here.

Good graduation news from DR GINNY.

DR MATTH - my reaction to HOLLYWOODLAND was similar - I thought Affleck and Lane were terrific, and the Reeves story is so dramatic, wasting 2/3'rds of the movie on Brody's life (and BIG nose) was a crime almost as great as the investigation itself.

And Lois Smith was completely wasted in the role of Helen Besselo....lost opportunity.

A bit. It's just my usual sinus stuff, which usually goes away in a day or two. I hope.  Otherwise, it was nice to have a somewhat lazy, nap-filled day today.  Thanks for asking, Jeanne.  -And good to hear that you got some answers regarding your dental work.

I had bacon and eggs earlier today at around eleven-thirty, so I think I'll mosey on over to Gelson's and get some prosciutto and melon and maybe some potato salad.  When I was at the post office this morning one of the guys there said I might be getting a box or two back because I used the small customs form when I should have used the large custom form.  I simply said that I'd better NOT be getting anything back, given that no one seems to be able to keep their story straight about which form goes with which box and it keeps changing from week to week - I said it's time you stop putting this all on your customers and time for you people to take some responsibility for changing the rules on a weekly basis.  I told him that nowhere else in the world is this crap going on - they use tiny little customs forms and not on small packages.  It's ridiculous.  I then called the USPS in the afternoon and had a long conversation - interestingly, the gal I was talking to told me there was absolutely no rule that she could see that the postal workers have to now enter all the info on a large customs form into the computer.  I told her they've been doing it for three weeks and she was just baffled - you see what I mean - no one knows what the HELL is going on and it's chaos.  I got specific instructions from her about which forms on which size boxes and I also ascertained that even when I use the large forms for the smaller non-global priority weights that I don't have to bring those in as long as they don't have actual stamps on them - as long as I use my postage meter tape I'm fine to leave those on the loading dock.  I then ordered tons of small and large customs slips, the little plastic envelopes for the large and a bunch of boxes.

Well, I'm off to the theater.  Tonight is the $5 preview of TAO's latest "alternative holiday fare"...Poona the F*#kdog (and other stories for children) (http://www.buyolympia.com/events/?details=496)! ;D

Quote
These outrageous "Fairy tales for Grown-ups" are not for the easily offended!

Poona, our ingenuous heroine, meets up with aliens, talking shrubs, and mealy-mouthed salesmen in her quest to find someone to play in her big pink box.

Nothing is sacred in this raucous assault on the power of language.

It will be...interesting!

Next, on that player, I watched DR. NO in Blu-ray. I always enjoy revisiting this terrific James Bond picture. The storytelling is so clear and the production just right, before Bond got a case of the BIGs. Aside from GOLDFINGER, this is probably my favorite Bond film.

I didn't have enough time to watch a second movie, so I plucked NCIS - Season One off the shelf and loaded in a disc at random and picked the first episode on the disc.

This was the one wherre Marine recruiters were being murdered, so Gibbs volunteers to be a recruiter to lure the sniper to try to strike again. The first season, of course, had Sasha Alexander as Kate (no Ziva for two seasons), and McGee had not yet joined the team full-time. (Sean Murray is not in the episode at all.)

When I was a little kid and I did something to annoy my parents in a restaurant, they would always say to me "We could never take you to Schrafft's."

And I'd think - why would I want you to take me to Schrafft's?  It closed forever ago.  Let's go somewhere that serves food now.

Then I watched tonight's BONES. The murder story would have been more interesting if it hadn't been continually interrupted by the three Stooges (Sweets, Hodgins, and the sad sack lab intern) waiting in line for James Cameron's AVATAR (talk about Fox doing its own product placement!) and flirting with this hideously tattooed girl who was coming on to them. I was watching the show on DVR, so everytime that ridiculous waste of time subplot came on, I sped right through it. The mystery story really got slighted this week.

Hiya, Julie.  Catching up with everyone.

I journey back to La Manse tomorrow to get a bid on what installing a heat pump will cost.  We think if we go through with this, since we probably won't start living there until spring at the earliest, we'll just keep the current oil furnace, keep it turned up high enough so that pipes don't freeze, etc., but then next year put in a high efficiency heat pump.  There are all sorts of tax incentives, so hopefully it won't give me too much angina.
