Well, you've read the notes, the notes were fair and bookish, and now it is time for you to post until the bookish cows come home.

BK, re: the speed limit you posted (i think it was 35m/hr). That seems awfully high for a residential street. The speed limits here are 30m or 50km/hr ON THE SERVICE ROAD OF THE HIGHWAY and on big huge main streets with no houses.
Obviously if you were going 20m/hour that is your right (since you were way under the speed limit). But i can't imagine how i'd feel if cars were driving at 35 where kids live.
Although since there were no kids, your neighbor was crazy. The speed limits here where there are houses is like 30KM/hr which is way less than 30m/hr. I wonder why they don't just try to get the speed limits adjusted?
Or is it a normal speed limit in LA (35?)?
Btw, i wrote this post based on yesterday's post (not the notes). The notes made it sound much funnier (well to the reader, not to you).

Tonight is the season finale of THE AMAZING RACE.
I was amazed to read on the televisionwithoutpity board that many many people seem to want the 3rd place team to win! I get that one of the teammates seems to be everybody's favorite. But man, this team sucks!

Good morning, all! Today is an angst-filled day at 202 West 82. I have a lot to do and time slips away roo quickly. I'm also feeling the effects of a pinched pocket this morning and I am not happy over my poverty. I did send my brothers an inquiry over the state of my dad's property since I doubt either of them is doing a thing to sell it and I know that the Macbeths are doing nothing to maintain it. They are both resistant to listing the property with a realtor and my last sentence to them was "I'd rather pay 10% for something than have 100% of nothing," since i really have no idea what a current real estate commission percentage is. I am also sending all correspondence on the property to my estate executors since i am convinced the property will never sell within the rest of my lifetime and I don't want my heirs being shorted by the Macbeths.
I may run down to the matinee of FINIAN'S RAINBOW today and watch my friend David Gursky conduct the show, but first I have things to do here, like vacuum, work on some orchestra parts, type up some notes on Moross' music for THE SHARKFIGHTERS, and deal with some more BABES IN TOYLAND angst.
DR vixmom, I'm sorry for all the crap you've been going through; I hope you will take some time for yourself between your health, work, car, and family obligations. I admire your maintaining your sens of humor amongst all the tsuris and I send love and best wishes for the results of your PET scan.
BK, I loved the last sentence of the notes. Enjoy the Hoover book.
In reference to my first paragraph, folks, please keep them real estate vibes coming! I'd rather have that money drawing interest for me than spend the rest of my life paying out taxes on property I will never need. Thanks!

And BK at least that guy was not in his car! People driving can be even nuttier. Yesterday I was driving and I had my 2 nieces in the car. I was coming out of a parking lot and had the right to turn right.
I was going to be turning on a busy street and there were 4 lanes of traffic going at 60km/hr. Anyhow the right lane i was going to turn into was free (although there was a bus stopped in that lane blocking my view). But the other lanes had cars racing. And a lot of them like to merge quickly into the right lane so they can turn at the next light.
Now if i had been driving alone i probably would have turned right away to the right. But it's not the safest thing. And with a 6 month old and a 4 year old i was waiting (there is a red light that would stop all the cars if you wait a minute).
Anyway the guy behind me (who also had kids in his car) was honking like a buffoon. And not just one honk. After about 10 seconds he decided to go around me (which was really unsafe).
I get that he was impatient. But would it really have killed him to wait 30 more seconds. I mean maybe he's never driven out of there before to know that cars swerve into the right lane. But still i'm sure he could see there was a baby in the car!

Last night I watched the original DVD release of Judy Garland's A STAR IS BORN which I enjoyed very much, although the edition itself has some problems. But Judy Garland is amazing - James Mason's voice is so wonderful, it almost makes up for the face - and Jack Carson is also wonderful.
Sometimes I take it for granted that Judy Garland could do what she did....making it look fairly effortless....

Yes, it has become quite the cliché. As bad as the steely professioanl woman finds humanity in a small town scnario that Zellweger's NEW IN TOWN and Bullock's THE PROPOSAL share.

Good morning!
Very cold here (32) during my walk this morning, and I should have worn something warmer on my head than a baseball cap. Also will need gloves if I'm to not have frostbitten fingers. I had to keep my hands in my pockets during the entire walk. It's not getting out of the 40s today though it's a beautiful day otherwise. It IS December, so the cold temps aren't that big a surprise.

I should add that DR JRand59 is correct about the book as well; I would like to turn the research into a book about the show's creation, the collaborators and cast, and its path on becoming a household title. I've really enjoyed the following similar books:
OZ BEFORE THE RAINBOW by Mark Evan Swartz
LADY IN THE DARK: BIOGRAPHY OF A MUSICAL by bruce mcclung
OKLAHOMA!: THE MAKING OF AN AMERICAN MUSICAL by Tim Carter
EVERYTHING WAS POSSIBLE by Ted Chapin

I had not read the book ANGEL HEART, so the De Niro revelation certainly came as a surprise to me. Yes, in hindsight I could see the clues, but the first time through for me, I was swept up in the menacing atmosphere and weirdness of the entire film. I've always found it an effective crime drama. Rourke has always been an excellent actor with decent material and a good director. In the wrong hands, he could be lazy and walk through roles, but he's done good work even in movies that were dogs (HOMEBOY, for example). What he did to his career was criminal, but they were his choices right down the line, so I have no pity for him.

I think THE GRIFTERS is a near-masterpiece. Three really nasty people on the road to oblivion. It impresses me all over again every time I watch it.

DR elmore--sounds like a huge undertaking!

Today, being a day off from work, will likely be made up of a mixture of watching unwatched films plus some holiday favorites off the shelf. Haven't yet decided what my Blu-ray of the day will be, but I do plan to watch the Finney/SCROOGE tonight. With review work looming tomorrow, this may be my last day off for a while. Even if nothing else comes in tomorrow except G-FORCE on Blu-ray, I'm going to go back through BLAZING SADDLES and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN to get that Mel Brooks box set review started.
-
Lots of TV on tonight including new episodes of BROTHERS & SISTERS, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, (as DR Jennifer noted) THE AMAZING RACE, and COLD CASE (now on at 9 p.m.) CBS has dropped THREE RIVERS from the schedule and is replacing it with reruns of their crime dramas until something else moves to Sunday nights at midseason.

DR elmore--sounds like a huge undertaking!
well, the book idea is mine, but I've had wonderful collaborators on the edition. we're also working on Victor Herbert's THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER and Jerome Kern's OH BOY!

The Grifters is a great, great movie. Did not care for Angel Heart. Though the book is better, I had problems with it when I read it (could see it coming from a mile off) and hence turned down the chance to write the script (which was why I was reading the book in the first place).

I can see things from both sides of the "speeding" through neighborhoods issue. I was similarly accosted down the street a few years ago by an insane lady who came out waving her arms as I drove by at 15mph in a 25mph zone. I stopped my car, rolled down the window and screamed right back at her that I was 10mph *under* the speed limit. She shook her head and returned to her home. On the other hand, our street is 30mph and as some of you know we've experienced the horror of having one of our kids hit by a car (not on this street, but still), so I have also been out on our street screaming at people driving by at up to 50mph (especially if they're going down the steep hill part of our road). I will say that it's very hard to judge a car's actual speed when you're just standing by the side of the road, and my hunch is that cars appear to be going faster than they actually are.

I saw Angel Heart when it first came out in Montreal. Quebec was the only place in Canada or the US that showed the uncut version of the film.
I saw it with a group of friends and I got the twist right away when Robert de Niro first appeared.

As for "Angel Heart"...
I still remember all the fuss over Lisa Bonet - a.k.a. "Denise Huxtable" from "The Cosby Show" - playing an "adult" in an "adult" movie. Meh.

And he or anyone would have the complete right to scream if someone were driving that fast, especially if there were kids in view. The one or two times I've seen that happen, I've yelled at the speeders. But this isn't that - and it doesn't only happen to me. The looks these baboons give is shocking - they are so stupid and I'd guess they drive exactly the same speed in their cars while talking and texting, with their kids in the car - THAT'S the joke.
-
I had a lovelier than lovely night's sleep with very amusing dreams - one of them took place at what looked like the Wilshire Ebell Theater, but could have been the Shrine Auditorium. I was there - I was just hanging around, a little miffed that I hadn't been asked to direct the show, and since they were having terrible audio problems, I believe I was smirking just a bit, and telling everyone that would not have happened if I'd been there. Several big acts were leaving, refusing to perform. Then the news came that they'd fired the host of the evening - Jimmy Kimmel. I suggested that I host and that it could be really funny if I said that Jimmy had become indisposed and in a panic the producers had asked if there were any other Kimmels in the venue. I woke up before finding out if they'd let me do it.
-
I had an e-mail from my designer with the cover of the CD that follows the one I'll announce tonight, and it made me laugh out loud - it's quite brilliant and I know our genre fans here will buy this JUST because of the cover.

I just reviewed ANGEL HEART's new BD release. I've always rather liked the film and feel a lot of what is obvious to today's audiences was more surprising when it was first released--at least it was to me. I almost always guess "twists" right off the bat, and ANGEL HEART surprised me quite a bit when I first saw it. I was very pleased with the picture upgrade of the new BD.

I'm thinking about baking this afternoon, just not sure what I want to make....cookies or treats of some sort. Anyone have suggestions on favorite holiday cookies/treats?

I heard singers today singing in the keys of Z flat, Q sharp and J... often simultaneously. The musicians accompanying them played in P minor.

Good afternoon everyone.
More holiday cd's for me today. Brent Barrett Christmas Mornings, Andrea Bocelli My Christmas, Yo-Yo Ma & Friends Songs of Joy & Peace, White Christmas soundtrack, Sting If on a Winter's Night, Christmas with the Rat Pack, Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Extraordinaire.
I fluctuate between being spiritual and agnostic but still love the music during the holidays. It makes me happy, that next year will be ok.

I need to take my DVD off the shelf and rewatch the movie to see if I can live with the transfer I have or if I must have the upgrade. It's not a movie I revisit that often, but I like it just enough to want a better copy if the one I have isn't very good. I honestly don't remember what it looked like.

If we're talking SHREK or NINE TO FIVE, you're right. There may be something else coming in that's more appealing. To be judged on a case by case basis. AVATAR (though I haven't seen it) doesn't seem to be for me if its trailer is to be indicative of its allure.
-
Still addressing customs forms - what a drag that's become - it used to be so much easier with less than an ounce overseas packages - now it takes twice as long - ridiculous. And interestingly, no overseas countries have to do it for packages coming here.
-
I spent all afternoon with some crackerjack mysteries. I started with disc three in PERRY MASON, Season One, a set I opened months ago but am only now getting to disc three. I watched four episodes in a row including one that I watched while I ate lunch.
-
Of the four cases, I guessed two murderers correctly. I missed one flat out and as for the fourth, there just weren't enough clues to be able to arrive at a conclusion since the corpse disappeared after being declared dead. That was the best plotted mystery with a very excellent conclusion.
Guest stars include many typical 50s actors: Peggie Castle, Pierre Watkin, Paul Cavanaugh. I especially enjoyed seeing James Anderson (who played the redneck semi-literate Bob Ewell in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD) playing a journalist, slimy but definitely not a redneck.
-
I ended my afternoon watching HERCULE POIROT'S CHRISTMAS on DVD. This is one of the few Agatha Christie books I ever managed to guess the murderer before Poirot unmasked the culprit. It's a locked room mystery, but I caught on to the author's "trick" so early that it was fun seeing her drop tiny clues in the rest of the book. Seeing the filmed version, the murderer seems even more obvious and so do those small hints toward the identity of the guilty party.
-
There doesn't seem to be much going on with the internet this afternoon, so I'll close things down here, go clean my bathroom, put away the already folded laundry, and then head back to the home theater for more viewing.

Sunday evening greetings! We are back from Lima and this year's Middletown Civic Chorus performance of Handel's Messiah, in which my DH Richard was 20% of the bass section and didn't even get his name in the program. Aside from the first violin, which was pretty bad, all the singers and musicians did an excellent job.
We were glad we'd driven to Lima last night and didn't have to get up at 5:30 this morning. We were home from there in time for Richard to take a short nap before going to the warm-up before the performance.
Now that we're home for the evening, it feels like it should be about 10pm...

Is there any hope of his getting a church to serve that is a bit closer to your home?

Continued healing vibes for DR JANE.

No football this afternoon so that AMAZING RACE FINALE should start on time tonight on the East Coast.
A story on the net says that a person saw two of the teams in NYC on Friday - so I am guessing they were the top two teams in NYC for the talk shows on Monday morning.
-
Tomorrow the Vixter and her musical theater class are going to see this http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/season/production.aspx?id=10512&detect=yes

It has turned quite cold here - I need to find my gloves

I heard singers today singing in the keys of Z flat, Q sharp and J... often simultaneously. The musicians accompanying them played in P minor.
Then we danced the hora.

~~~CONTINUED REAL ESTATE AND FINANCIAL VIBE$~~~
FOR DR ELMORE3003!!!!
-
So Ginny - now that Richard is ordained does your home qualify as a parsonage?
No, but it could probably be called a vicarage. In this particular Anglican denomination, parishes have rectors (in which case, the house would be a rectory) and missions have vicars. Because Holy Nativity only qualifies as a mission, Richard's the Vicar.
Is there any hope of his getting a church to serve that is a bit closer to your home?
Probably not, because there aren't very many Anglican Province of America congregations.
thanks for asking td & vixmom. yesterday morning was pretty rough, proceeded by a very painful night. so far today is much better though terribly painful. i've decided i'm going to double my wee morning pain meds and see if that helps. i need it the most then.
I found when I was goingthrough my troubles that I would take a heavier dose of the pain meds about a half hour before I planned to be asleep for the evening - I was allowed to take 1 or 2 teaspoons of my pain meds at a time so during the day I would take only one level teaspoon but at night I would take two "heaping spoonfuls" - the little bit extra made all the difference between a getting a night's sleep and spending the night awake and miserable
it only lasts 3 or 4 hours and the early morning hours are the worst since i get so stiff. if inceasing the dose then doesn't help i'll try your suggestion-thanks.
PAINFREE VIBES TO DR JANE~~~~~~~~
DR Vixmom - my tried and true shortbread cut-outs: Cream together 2 sticks butter (NOT margarine) and 1/2 cup light brown sugar. Knead in about 2&1/2 to 3 cups flour until "rolling" consistency. Roll about 1/4" thick, cut, and bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 300o until golden brown. Cool & decorate with icing, etc.
These take some practice, but are worth it. You can bake them ahead and freeze for decorating later. A great tradition at our house is to have a cookie decorating party with holiday visitors.
my favorite holiday cut out cookies. not only do the taste great, thy cut out easily. i don't care for icing, instead i prefer to decorate with other topping. to me plain colored sugar tastes the best. i used to mix the dough ahead of time, keeping it in the frig until the boys were ready to cut and bake with me.
HOLIDAY SUGAR CUT OUT COOKIES
Sift together:
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Cream together:
1/2 cup softened butter
1 cup sugar
Beat in:
1 egg
2 Tablespoons milk
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
Slowly add dry ingredients
Divide cookie dough in half; wrap each half in wax paper
Chill in frig at least two hours
Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees
Roll out dough on floured surface and cut with plain cookie cutter
(I dip the cookie cutters in flour first)
Decorate cookies
(I use colored sugar)
Bake 8-10 minutes
-
ginny-thank you.
one of my all time favorite cookies and easy to make. again, the batter can be made ahead of time until ready to bake. the baked cookies taste great right out of the freezer.
Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Cookies
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup soft butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
Topping:
8 teaspoons sugar mixed with
3 teaspoons cinnamon
Sift flour, powder, soda & salt; set aside
At medium speed, beat butter, sugar & eggs until light & fluffy
At low speed beat in sour cream and vanilla until smooth
Gradually beat in flour mixture until well combined
Refrigerate 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees,
Lightly grease cookie sheet
Drop batter by slightly rounded tablespoons onto cookie sheet
Sprinkle with topping
Bake 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
These can be frozen. In fact, when I’m in the mood, I sometimes prefer them that way.
~~~PAIN MANAGEMENT VIBES~~~

Good Evening!
Well... I went out to a friend's place down/out/? in Brooklyn Heights for a brief music rehearsal. She had mentioned that she would also be serving a "light snack". Well, of course, she ended up serving a full meal - four courses! Soup, salad, entree and dessert. -And it was all quite yummy.
-Of course, I'm supposed to meet up with some friends in about an hour for my dinner proper, but... Hmm...
-
DR vixmom - As for Ragtime - Be sure to see it sooner rather than later. Just sayin'. -And there are plenty of discount codes out there too. Alas, it's also been available for 1/2-price on TKTS almost every single day since it started running.

For DR the vixter -
Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
Recipe courtesy Wayne Harley Brachman
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups rolled (old-fashioned) oats
1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup lightly packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Set 2 racks in the middle and upper thirds of the oven and preheat to 350F degrees.
In a medium bowl, stir the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, oats, and pecans together with a whisk or fork. In a large bowl, beat the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together for 30 seconds until blended. Beat in the egg until smooth and barely fluffy. With mixer running on medium high, drizzle in the maple syrup and vanilla until incorporated.
Turn the mixer down to its lowest setting and gradually add the flour-oatmeal mixture. Blend just to combine, then mix in the chocolate chips.
Drop walnut-sized balls of dough onto a nonstick or parchment-lined cookie sheet at 3-inch intervals. With moistened fingers, flatten and round out the cookies a little.
Bake for 9 minutes, turning the pan once for even baking. The cookies are done when they are lightly browned on top. Set the cookie sheets on a rack to cool.
Yield: about 36 cookies

I think it's a combination of factors like congregation size, building ownership, financial capacity, etc.

Tax work is under control for the weekend, although not by any means finished.
Looking forward to seeing RAGTIME today.
I am very anxious to hear your thoughts of this production - I have been thinking about taking the Vixter to see it (I missed it last time around )-- although I desperately want to go see South Pacific as well....
Make it a weekend and go see both!
there's that whole "you gotta pay for the tickets" problem with that plan....
;)
Surely with all the overtime you've been putting in at work... I hope...
-
I had an e-mail from my designer with the cover of the CD that follows the one I'll announce tonight, and it made me laugh out loud - it's quite brilliant and I know our genre fans here will buy this JUST because of the cover.
I guess I've lost track..
Will this announcement be an official one? or another "advance HHW" one?

I have spent my day doing laundry, slow roasting a pork loin and making cookies of a sort: Chocolate-Almond Saltine Toffee. It's a confection I got the recipe for several years ago in Food & Wine magazine. I like to make it for grazing days (everyone brings snack foods) at work and it proves to be popular.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups sliced almonds (6 ounces)
Approximately 60 saltine crackers (not low-sodium)
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 sticks (3/4 pound) unsalted butter
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 pound bittersweet chocolate, chopped into 1/2-inch pieces
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Spread the almonds on a baking sheet and toast for about 6 minutes, until golden.
2. Line a 12-by-17-inch rimmed baking sheet with a silicone mat or lightly buttered parchment paper. Arrange the saltine crackers on the baking sheet in a single layer, patching any holes with cracker bits; slight gaps are okay.
3. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, butter and corn syrup and cook over low heat until the sugar is melted. Brush the side of the pan with a moistened pastry brush to wash down any sugar crystals. Cook the syrup over moderate heat without stirring until it starts to brown around the edge, about 5 minutes. Insert a candy thermometer into the syrup and simmer, stirring with a wooden spoon, until honey-colored caramel forms and the temperature reaches 300°, about 6 minutes longer.
4. Slowly and carefully pour the caramel over the crackers, being sure to cover most of them evenly. Using an offset spatula, spread the caramel to cover any gaps. Let cool for 3 minutes, then sprinkle the chopped chocolate evenly on top. Let stand until the chocolate is melted, about 3 minutes, then spread the chocolate evenly over the toffee. Spread the almonds evenly over the chocolate. Freeze the toffee until set, about 15 minutes.
5. Invert the toffee onto a work surface and peel off the mat or paper. Invert again, break into large shards and serve.
Make Ahead:
The chocolate-almond saltine toffee can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.

Didn't you see my season on The Amazing Race? ;)
-
Jane, you've been in my thoughts. I hope you have a restful night tonight and a good day tomorrow.
-
That sounds good, DR td. I've seen a similar recipe using melted butter and brown sugar over graham crackers, with the toasted nuts spread o'er the top, of course.
-
I am glad that Laura DR is keeping us up to date on the latest teen lingo. Otherwise, I'd feel hopelessly antiquated. :)
-
I'm very hip, DAW.
-
laura thank you. sleep tonight will be a welcome treat. the doctor said i must sleep with the sling on until the breaks are healed. i get painfully stiff as the night progresses. during the day, at home, i don't have to wear the sling if i'm careful to keep my arm against my body. i get up often and move around to stretch and slowly let my arm stretch out at my side. it all hurts but the early morning pain is barely tolerable. i've decided to play it safe tonight and only take an extra half tabler to see how i do before doubling it.
-
I'm watching the BCS Bowl Selection show on FOX - wonder where the #4 Bearcats are headed?
-
Hmm - Sugar Bowl in New Orleans against Florida. And will Coach Kelly be with them or will he have deserted to Notre Dame?
-
I wept again at the closing scene of FINIAN'S RAINBOW this afternoon. I so love this production! Then I had a too-brief visit with two of my favorite people, DR FJL and the wonderful Skip Kennon. I wpould have loved to stay for pizza but I had to get home to accomplish soem more work before I head for bed around 9:30. I have to be up around 6 am to accomplish a lot of what I need to do before tomorrow's recording sessions begin.
I walked out of the apartment at 43rd and 10th, and a bus pulled up almost immediately. It was a nice ride home and I stopped at the market for some tonic water; I'm in the mood for vodka and tonic when I finish my proofreading.
DR vixmom, I want to see RAGTIME too!

DR elmore3003 - have a great time tomorrow at the FINIAN'S recording session! I hope you will report everything about it.
I think it will go very smoothly. We're adding two more violins and guitar/banjo for the recording and I think it will sound fabulous. The recording will have more of the score than any previous recording and I think the day will be long but a lot of fun.
I had meant to tell you all that last night I watched the 1930 film of Molnar's LILIOM with Charles Farrell. I found it quite wonderful in its mix of middle-European characters and flight into fantasy with the heaven- and hell-bound trains. I had read the play 30 years ago and I was surprised how much of it I remembered. Of course, a lot of the original text ends up in its American counterpart CAROUSEL, and now I want to see the Fritz Lang version in French with Charles Boyer.
-
DR elmore - Have a FUN time tomorrow!!! -Where are they recording? Every time I walk by 54th and 10th, I'm still amazed that the old Sony(?) studios are no longer there. (That's where we recorded Lestat. :-\ )

This was originally built for the Expo 67 and was the US Pavillion. If memory serves it was designed by Buckminmater Fuller The Monorail used to go through the pavillion.
I believe it is one of two pavilions still left standing, The other being the original French Pavilion hat is now the Casino.
In the early 90's when they were sealing what was the entrance/exits for the monorail the exterior coating caught fire and burned. The structure and the inside remained intact. I remember watching it burn from across the river at revolving restaurant. It was a Sunday.
It is being used for something but I'm don't remember what.

Yes, there are some folks here who watch such things.
-
After I got the bathroom cleaning done and the laundry put away, I headed back to the home theater for more viewing.
I began by finishing HERCULE POIROT'S CHRISTMAS which I had gotten near the end of but didn't quite finish. The denouement was a trifle extended by taking the suspects to another locale to unmask the murderer, but I guess that's what happens in the book. I honestly can't remember.
-
Next, I watched the 1970 SCROOGE on DVD, upconverted and looking pretty splendid. This transfer is still acceptable. Of course, I'd love to see it in high def one day, but there don't seem to be any Paramount stirrings about starting to release classics on Blu-ray. And when they do, it'll be those same ones they've recently remastered for DVD release in their Centennial Collection.
-
tcb-cold/cough be-gone vibes!
-
Next, I watched last week's FLASHFORWARD. A good half season finale to mix things up and leave the show on a cliff edge awaiting its return in March. Too long a hiatus for a show that had been losing audience, but nothing to be done about that now.
-
And I ended my season with tonight's penultimate episode of DEXTER, with the plot strands tightening wonderfully leading up to the season finale next week. Should be ripping good entertainment.
-
Shayne, one of two things happened: she either bought back the rights, or suggested they give them back since I don't believe she'd ever, once, received a royalty statement on that project, which is sort of breach of contract, I should think.
-
And I don't really like the cut out cookies. LOL. It just always seems like a good idea at the time. I'll take them to work. Someone will eat them
Um. There's only two people where you work.

Oh Laura you make me laugh!!!

I'm going to head down in a few minutes and go to bed. I think I'll finally be going back to work tomorrow, so I'm excited to have something to do, even if it is a minor Disney animation project like G-FORCE.

These take some practice, but are worth it. You can bake them ahead and freeze for decorating later. A great tradition at our house is to have a cookie decorating party with holiday visitors.
Thanks Ginny _ I have just printed this out!

Oh! I keep forgetting and Cilla's post just reminded me - the Vixter wants to bake home made cookies this year - she is asking of each of you to post yor favorite homemade cookie recipe - the only cookies I have ever made from scratch are thr Toll House cookies recipe from the back of the bag
Most of the recipes that I have are ones that have been posted here. I did a search and couldn't find that this recipe was posted on HHW. I haven't made these, but they sound good:
Pound Cake Cookies
Makes 4 to 5 dozen small cookies
Pastry chef Ann Amernick brushes these tender cookies with a sweet-tart glaze using a soft-bristled paintbrush. Just one swipe imparts the perfect amount. These are best served the day they are baked.
The cookies are based on the old-fashioned approach to pound cake that calls for a pound of each ingredient. Weighing the ingredients is encouraged but not necessary.
8 ounces (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature
8 ounces (scant 1 1/4 cups) granulated sugar
8 ounces eggs (about 4 large eggs)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract or 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
8 ounces (scant 1 1/4 cups) flour
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice (between 1 and 2 large lemons)
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place a wire rack over newspapers, a brown paper bag, paper towels or wax paper to catch any drips.
In a large bowl using an electric mixer on low speed, beat the butter and sugar for about 4 minutes. The mixture should be light in color and texture but not fluffy.
Add the eggs, 1 at a time, mixing after each addition just until combined. Add the vanilla or lemon zest and mix for about 2 minutes.
Add the flour in 3 additions, scraping the bottom of the bowl with a spatula to ensure the ingredients are completely incorporated the dense dough. Drop teaspoons of the dough onto the baking sheet or fit a pastry bag with a No. 6 or 7 Ateco tip and pipe the dough onto the baking sheet. Bake the cookies for 5 minutes, then rotate the sheet front to back.
Bake for about 5 more minutes, until cookies are lightly golden and just firm to the touch. The cookies will spread out; they should be a little soft, not crisp.
In a bowl, whisk together the confectioners' sugar and lemon juice. The mixture should be smooth and somewhat runny.
Remove the cookies from the oven; immediately transfer them to a wire rack and, using a soft-bristled paintbrush about 1 1/2 inches wide, lightly brush the cookies with the glaze.
Per cookie (based on 60): 64 calories, 1 gm protein, 8 gm carbohydrates, 3 gm fat, 24 mg cholesterol, 2 gm saturated fat, 5 mg sodium, trace dietary fiber.

my favorite holiday cut out cookies. not only do the taste great, thy cut out easily. i don't care for icing, instead i prefer to decorate with other topping. to me plain colored sugar tastes the best. i used to mix the dough ahead of time, keeping it in the frig until the boys were ready to cut and bake with me.
HOLIDAY SUGAR CUT OUT COOKIES
Sift together:
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Cream together:
1/2 cup softened butter

3/4 teaspoon vanilla
Slowly add dry ingredients
Divide cookie dough in half; wrap each half in wax paper

Roll out dough on floured surface and cut with plain cookie cutter
(I dip the cookie cutters in flour first)

one of my all time favorite cookies and easy to make. again, the batter can be made ahead of time until ready to bake. the baked cookies taste great right out of the freezer.
Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Cookies

1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
Topping:
8 teaspoons sugar mixed with
3 teaspoons cinnamon
Sift flour, powder, soda & salt; set aside
At medium speed, beat butter, sugar & eggs until light & fluffy
At low speed beat in sour cream and vanilla until smooth
Gradually beat in flour mixture until well combined
Refrigerate 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees,
Lightly grease cookie sheet
Drop batter by slightly rounded tablespoons onto cookie sheet

For DR the vixter -
Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
Recipe courtesy Wayne Harley Brachman
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups rolled (old-fashioned) oats
1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup lightly packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Set 2 racks in the middle and upper thirds of the oven and preheat to 350F degrees.
In a medium bowl, stir the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, oats, and pecans together with a whisk or fork. In a large bowl, beat the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together for 30 seconds until blended. Beat in the egg until smooth and barely fluffy. With mixer running on medium high, drizzle in the maple syrup and vanilla until incorporated.
Turn the mixer down to its lowest setting and gradually add the flour-oatmeal mixture. Blend just to combine, then mix in the chocolate chips.
Drop walnut-sized balls of dough onto a nonstick or parchment-lined cookie sheet at 3-inch intervals. With moistened fingers, flatten and round out the cookies a little.
Bake for 9 minutes, turning the pan once for even baking. The cookies are done when they are lightly browned on top. Set the cookie sheets on a rack to cool.
Yield: about 36 cookies
The Vixter is going to be so pleased with all these recipes! Thank you!!

DR elmore3003 - have a great time tomorrow at the FINIAN'S recording session! I hope you will report everything about it.

I hope...
Oh , have I never mentioned this part? I am a "salaried paraprofessional" that means oddly enough that no matter how many hours I put in over 40 hours I only get paid for 40 - however if I work less than 40 hours I must use vacation or sick time ....
oh how I wish I had never left my old job at C & B!!!

I think I have had this and it was to die for! Thank you for the recipe!

Maybe we can set a date!

And I ended my season with tonight's penultimate episode of DEXTER, with the plot strands tightening wonderfully leading up to the season finale next week. Should be ripping good entertainment.
. . .and I just watched it tonight!
I can understand why the show is losing viewers, I don't think that it has enough story to be a continuing series. Having read the novel which it is inspired by, I think that the premise calls out for a miniseries, just not a season-by-season show. Right now, at its mid-season mark, there is still enough story left to finish out a season, but, I cannot see the point in trying to be a long-running series.
That said, I find it one of the fastest paced shows on television and really, really look forward to the next installment.

I want to visit DR vixmom's house on baking day. ;)

I love peanut butter blossoms. Always made them during the years. Not so much anymore, maybe for Christmas day this year.
Went to the local Studio City Parade, walked, watched, shopped, and had the best chocolate dipped pretzels that were being handed out for free by one of the local sweets store.
Have a really great week everyone. ;)
