Well, you've read the notes, the notes mused, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they, too have a muse but they call it a MOOS.

Morning all.

I survived my first day back at work. I have a presentation tomorrow morning at 9:30. The same dog and pony show we did last year so it's not anything new. I have a small pile of work which came in while I was gone.

I will be seeing Nine with a friend this evening. I don't know how I will react. I am of the opinion that the original stage version was amazing and beautiful. I don't get the sense from the clips I've seen that this will be the case in the movie theatre.

Good morning, all! And a special hello to our new DR Basil! It's fantastic that we've acquired three new DRs in the past two months and I'm very happy that all three have shown up.

This morning, I was lying in bed thinking about what I hoped to accomplish on Jonathan Gealt's show this morning and it hit me: after a long hiatus, I am back to the McGlinnventory today. So, I'll be downtown until noon and when I get back I'll finish up the bass parts and proceed to the drums.

BK, I'm glad the book is going well. I hope you're moving the deleted portions of the text to another folder and holding onto them for the book that deals with yucky personal history in fictional or nonfictional form. And I guess this is my lead-in to the TOD.

I still want to write my history of BABES IN TOYLAND from 1902-2000, and I'm still intrigued by DR Jose's suggestion for a book on musical theatre although I've read and agreed, and disagreed, with so many texts on the form's origins, developments. Maybe I shold write a book tearing down those I disagree with and praising those wherein I agree. And then there's the long-awaited memoirs. Hmm . . .

And I'm all alone in the world.

DR Ben, you've got me! I'm here.

Would any DR be interested in a Jan 16 ticket to a Symphony Space concert of Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE in which my friend Jesse Cromer is singing Papageno? I cannot go and I'm bummed about it.

Good morning! I expected to sleep in later since I've been going to bed late and getting up so early every day since I've been here, but I guess I'm on a routine. And this is later than I've gotten to sleep in. I may snooze a bit more though, I feel so tired after going through this whole process and battling very opinionated people. It will ultimately make the film better but it's very draining.

Hi, Ben!

I'm looking forward to having a day just to hang. DR Jose is going to meet me for breakfast and then we're going to check out the big tree and a few store windows and wind up in Chelsea. I have a feeling Madelines will be consumed at some point. A great way to spend a day before diving back into intensive editing tomorrow!

I would love to write a book about the Broadway theatres from the time Broadway was 14th Street up to the present day and include as many pictures of the old theatres and locations as possible. It might be a coffee table book or it might be a multi-volume book.

Or I might write a biography of

TOD:

Hmmm...not exactly sure about this one.  I know that in the past five years or so, I've become fascinated with the New York performing arts community of the 1950's.  It was a very exciting time, with the rise of off- and off-off Broadway venues and the emergence of new playwrights and lots of work available for actors through theatre and television.  There was a growing middle class that was starting to attend theatre, ballet and classical concerts regularly.  And even though this was the age of McCarthyism, this new audience was approachable (if not totally embracing) to new and radical ideas and approaches presented on stage and in concert halls.  I think I would have loved living at that time.  If I could find the proper hook, I think I would also love to research and write about it.

TOD:

Aside from my own Hollywood memoirs, which I completed late last year, there are several non-fiction stories that I would not mind writing.

The problem is that the people who can give you first hand information on these subjects are no longer around, and I really hate doing a non-fiction book where all of your research comes from previously published material.

So, the only alternative is to do a "novel based on fact," which I might tackle one of these days.

In the meantime, I'm planning to turn one of my unsold screenplays into a novel.  It's of the horror/sci-fi genre, and I've completed over 40 pages.

And, no, Jack, there is no 50 foot woman in it.

 ;)

What's the Sue Ann Nivens line - it was something like "I woke up in the middle of the night with a great idea, so i went right home and wrote it down"  (That was actually a racy line for the 1970s, even for the sophisticated Mary tyler Moore Show)

As for the Topic of the Day...

Hmmm...

I'd like to research and write up a history of the audiences for musical theatre and opera and the other performing arts over the past 100 years.  I wouldn't want some sort of dry, sociological study, but rather a compilation of sorts of "bad" - and "good" - audience behavior.  A collection of "Yes, they really did that!" incidents.

Yes, cellphones are quite the nuisance today, but, remember, people used to bring rotten food to the theatre to throw at the stage.

I didn't hear the UPS truck this morning (but I was deep in thought reading so I could have missed him). Anyway, if CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2 on Blu-ray comes, that will be today's work project. If it doesn't get here by 12:30 or so, then I'll be beginning the Criterion Collection's DVD release of CHE. This will take me all day just to see the 4 hour, 18 minute film. Two hours 18 + commentary this afternoon and two hours 18 + commentary tonight.

If DOZEN does arrive today, CHE will get pushed to tomorrow. But I want to get started on this long movie as soon as possible.

ABC burns off two episodes each of SCRUBS and BETTER OFF TED along with a new episode of THE FORGOTTEN.

Fox has college football.

TOD:

I've talked about it before here, but I've already been interested in the singers who dubbed the singing voices for actors starting with the beginning of sound films. Just last night while watching THE SHOW OF SHOWS, there was a sister number, and the Costello sisters came out singing, and it obviously wasn't their voices. But who was doing the singing? For years, the studios kept the information secret either to protect a sensitive star or no one seemed to care whether Eleanor Powell was singing for herself (she wasn't) or not so no big deal was made about it. Some of the names of these ghost singers began to be made known when MGM began issuing soundtrack albums and we finally found out that it was Anita Ellis singing for Vera-Ellen in THREE LITTLE WORDS and THE BELLE OF NEW YORK or that Cyd Charisse was being dubbed by a host of folks from India Adams to Carole Richards.

And who were these studio singers anyway? Did they have careers of their own? (Some did like Gogi Grant who sang for Ann Blyth in THE HELEN MORGAN STORY).

I wish there was a listing of ALL the dubbed singing in the movies from the start of talkies on. And biographies of the singers who did a lot of dubbing behind the scenes. Really, only Marni Nixon has gotten much publicity about it down through the years (well, she did dub in three of the biggest and most successful movie musicals of all time, so it's right she's gotten recognition), but there were lots of dubbers who did far more work behind the scenes than she did.

Hoosier Monkey did not get out today - but perhaps he may do something around the house later.

I watched CHEYENNE AUTUMN which is a strange movie.....what with Elizabeth Allen running around in her bloomers for no particular reason.....except of course to set up a very funny joke - James Stewart has denied ever meeting her before, but when she ends up on the floor of his buggy in her bloomers with her feet around his neck he says: "By golly, I did meet this girl in Wichita!"

The farther along the Indians got on the trail, the less makeup Carroll Baker wore....and the MORE makeup Dolores Del Rio wore.  And Karl Malden was completely unrestrained and outrageous in his role....difficult to watch.

bk, loving the notes you are telling us on the book!

TOD - I have a few ideas for a book that someday I'll put on paper.  One is a fictional auto-biography, but sometimes I wonder if anyone would care!!  LOL  Second, would be a play about my Grandparents.  Someday...

The DP and DM have returned from Disneyland and a stop at Mission St Ines in Solvang.  The Mission stop was great.  My new pastor was pastor there before he came to us and made sure that I stopped there on my way home as the DP had never seen Solvang.  (a lovely Danish town).  It was a nice short vacation, and now I'm ready to hit the ground running.

Auditions for Rent are Saturday and Sunday this week.  I'm excited to do the show, however, just about as excited as everyone else in the area as there are 4 other productions sprouting up in the area between now and July.  Then there is that second guitar/second keyboard part combination that I have to try and find someone to play...

Way back when, Sal Mineo told me that working on this film was one of the biggest disappointments of his career.  He said that Ford had totally lost it.  He said that he would miss shots and that, more often than not, his assistants were covering for him, trying to see that he didn't make any major mistakes.

All right.   DR Dan (the Man), would you please write a book?

No, sorry.  But thank you for asking.

Well, I didn't say I would write a book...

TOD:

I am writing one as we speak....

DR DRUXY just about ANY book could be improved by adding a 50 foot woman, but it is of course, your choice.

I always though that SOPHIE'S CHOICE would have turned out very differently if Styron had let Sophie grow to 50 feet.

I've written a couple of pages, and the MGM lady is trying to make things work, so I'll know more about that later, and I'm about to pick up the film tracks so I can hear what they sound like.  Then I'm heading out to Westlake Village to give Dana Kaproff some  Empire of the Ants CDs.

Really, only Marni Nixon has gotten much publicity about it down through the years (well, she did dub in three of the biggest and most successful movie musicals of all time, so it's right she's gotten recognition), but there were lots of dubbers who did far more work behind the scenes than she did.

i would find this interesting & fun to own.  last night while we were watching "to have & have not" keith didn't think lauren bacall was singing.  i would like a reference book to have looked that up.
Title: Re: THE MARVELOUSLY MARVELOUS MUSE

very clever idea to take the dog for a walk.  i gather it was not wearing tags.  even when they have tags, too often only a home number is listed which doesn't do much good if you aren't home.  we also have my cell number on sherlock's tag.

No tags. I asked the people on my street who answered the door if they recognized it, but no one did. So I went one street south and walked it to see if it would turn up a driveway. If I had gone on the street north of me, that brilliant idea would have worked.
Title: Re: THE MARVELOUSLY MARVELOUS MUSE

Actually, the owner lives on the street behind me; the person who found us was a friend of the owner, who was out looking for the dog. In order to make the story more concise, I changed that part. What's that called? Literary license? Something like that?

And, the guy who found us is the guy who did the tilework in my bathroom a few years ago.

i did a bit of research & Lauren Bacall did indeed do her own singing in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT:

"When it was decided that Bacall's character would sing, the studio and Howard Hawks ordered some vocal training with Warner vocal coach Dudley Chambers. In case she wasn't up to the challenge, several singers were called in to audition for the dubbing, among them torch singer Lillian Randolph and Dolores Hope (wife of Bob). Louanne Hogan, who was at Warners at the time assisting Joan Leslie with her vocals in Cinderella Jones, was in on the fun as well. "Yes, I auditioned for the dubbing of Betty Bacall in To Have and Have Not," Louanne told me recently. "I tried out, but my voice just didn't fit her at all. It fit Joan Leslie just fine. If I'm not mistaken, Andy Williams got the job." The then teen-aged Williams did win the auditions and recorded the numbers.

Bacall evidently unsuccessfully recorded the numbers. Says Tod McCarthy in "Howard Hawks: The Grey Fox of Hollywood": "Williams finally prevailed, and it was his voice that emanated from the playback machine ... when Hawks at last came to filming 'How Little We Know.' As was customary, Bacall sang along while [Hoagy] Carmichael tinkered away on the silent keyboard, and as she did, Hawks liked what he heard and told her to keep going. When she was done, he decided to record her again singing the song, so, despite the legend that has come down over the years that Andy Williams' voice was dubbed over Bacall's, the truth is that Bacall sang her own numbers in To Have and Have Not." Andy Williams wasn't left in a lurch, he appeared in a few bit roles at WB, such as Janie (1944) and The Big Sleep (1946).

The two songs Bacall was required to sing were the newly written "How Little We Know" by Carmichael and Johnny Mercer and "Am I Blue?" The latter song was penned by Grant Clarke and Harry Akst for the earlier Warner Bros. film On With The Show (1929), where it was sung by Ethel Waters. Warners obviously thought highly of the song. It was also featured in their So Long Letty (1930)."

Way back when, Sal Mineo told me that working on this film was one of the biggest disappointments of his career.  He said that Ford had totally lost it.  He said that he would miss shots and that, more often than not, his assistants were covering for him, trying to see that he didn't make any major mistakes.

Hmmm.... so MAD magazine's parody CHEYENNE AWFUL wasn't too far off the marK? (I've never seen the film, so I'm just speculating).

I spent the next two hours and eighteen minutes watching CHE on the Criterion DVD. The story is non-linear in this first film as we go back and forth between the Cuban Revolution and Che at the UN in 1964 making a speech and being interviewed.

Knowing very little about the revolution and its progress during its two years in length, the war scenes were fascinating. The film did not seem nearly 128 minutes long.

I hope the second half is equally engrossing.

I listened to about 30 minutes of the commentary. A very learned biographer of Che does it, and he fills in lots of things about the man's life that was skipped in the back-and-forth storytelling of part one. Another great Criterion commentary that gives added value to the package.

There was also the theatrical trailer for the movie on disc one.

Betsy and the realtor are, at this point anyway, loathe to even consider going down that road again.  We have several newer, nicer options, though they are not on 15 acres.  Having just tried to clean up our 3/4 acre to put this current house on the market, I'm thinking maybe that's another plus, LOL.

As DR edisaurus mentioned, we did have a nice stroll today.  It wasn't too cold.  It wasn't too windy.  And the sun was out today too.  A good day for replenishing one's Vitamin D supply.

It was a bit sad to see that the Bergdorg-Goodman windows were already in the process of being dismantled, but one of the windows was still in "full" view.  Although it was kind of neat being able to see some of the dismantling in progress behind the black shades.

Thankfully, the macarons at Madeleine Patisserie and the hot chocolate at City Bakery were still on display and available for consumption.

It was a bit sad to see that the Bergdorg-Goodman windows were already in the process of being dismantled, but one of the windows was still in "full" view.  Although it was kind of neat being able to see some of the dismantling in progress behind the black shades.

Did the Bergdorgs buy out the Bergdorfs?  And are they somehow related?

A Story For Today:

Today I found a little lost dog trotting by my house. I took it for a walk, and the owner found us as he was driving around looking for the little lost dog.

The End.

And the Bollywood version of this story would probably still run 3 hours.

Waht do you mean "used to?"  George still brings rotten food every time he comes and sees me in a show.

Is that film based on the cartoon character on the t-shirt?

I had a scary thing happen last night.  I went to bed early last night and watched the Fiesta Bowl before I went to sleep.  Wait!  Taht isn't the scary thing.  I woke up about 12:30, and I was soaking wet.  I got up and checked the thermostat in the bedroom, but it was off.  I walked out into the hall and the entire apartment was close to 100 degrees.  All of the baseboard heaters were going full blast.  The walls were so hot that I couldn't touch them.

I checked the living room thermostat, but it was off.  Apparently, when I turned it down before I went to bed, soemthing inside broke, so that all of the heaters attached to that thermostat were going full blast.  I found the correct circuit breaker and turned it off, but if I hadn't gotten up, Nicky and I would have been barbecue.

One other thing I noticed when I was booking my flight to Memphis...

I brought up all the various airline sites, as well as Travelocity, Orbitz, and Priceline.

The "guaranteed lowest price" from Orbitz was just $1.00 cheaper than the airline's price.

The Priceline "deal" was 70 cents cheaper than the airline's price.

Hmmm...

Needless to say, I paid the extra 70-cents - well UPTA's did/will - and earned my Frequent Flyer miles too.

Welcome to new DR BASIL.

DR CILLA LIZ - did that table ever get there?  I must have missed the news if it did.

Table??  Which one?  Do you mean the desk I bought or the kids table I ordered or the table I was taking from home to the office for the break room or the table that was stored  in another empty office?

The space I planned to put the new writing desk (my great deal from Pier 1) ended up being perfect for two wingback chairs I had at the office.  It's a nice litttle conversation area - it just needs a small table between the chairs - I have one of those at home.  Tonight I flexed my muscles and moved the writing desk from the garage into my living room and rearranged a few things so it fits...quite nicely.   So the writing desk isn't leaving home, lol

The little kids table arrived at my office a while back.   I need to take a bigger phillips screwdriver to the office tomorrow to finish putting it together.  The table I was taking from home for the breakroom - I took it apart put it in the Prius and took it to the office,  The table that was being stored in an empty office was moved into the new space by the moving company.

Or was it a different table you were interested in?  :)

I spent the first three hours of my evening watching the second half (2 hours, 9 minutes) of CHE. As involving as the first part was, that's how desultory the second part was. It was AGONY to sit through. It covers the 11 1/2 months of his final failed campaign in Bolivia trying to rouse the peasants to overthrow the government and finding them uninterested and suspicious of strangers. As smart as the man seemed to be, I could tell it was a lost cause at LEAST halfway through the campaign. I cannot IMAGINE why they kept pressing on when it was obvious that they were not only NOT gaining momentum, they were losing supporters left and right. Argh!

The commentary, however, is wonderful filling in lots of blanks left by the sketchy screenplay and generally paying a grand tribute to the man. It's far more interesting than the second half of the movie.

I did have time tonight to watch NCIS. Pretty good mystery (I did guess the correct murderer), but Rena Soffer began a story arc tonight as a combative lawyer than you just know is going to develop into a love interest for Gibbs eventually.

She couldn't have been more disagreeable and annoying for an introduction to the show. Nope, I've never been a fan of this actress' work, but they made the character so belligerent that I instantly despised her. They've got a major uphill struggle to win me over if they want this to develop into anything other than an adversarial relationship.

Thanks to everyone for the congrats on my office and the move.  We continued to settle in today and there is absolutely no question in my mind that we're doing the right thing. The phone started ringing off thehook this afternoon and Edith has my schedule jam packed for the rest of the week and next week is filling up very fast.  It's really a relief. Now that the move is off of my mind, I'm looking forward to digging in and getting back to work.

Tomorrow I'll deal with disc three in the CHE set, the bonus features. I guess if CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2 shows up tomorrow, I'll have to put CHE aside since it doesn't come out until January 19th and CHEAPER came out today. Otherwise, this will be a good one to get out of the way.

I took another look at the five-film CHANTEL AKERMAN box today. Three of those films are less than an hour in length, so that will allow me to get through the box quicker than I had thought I would.

I remember running into a woman who had just sat through both parts of "Che" at The Ziegfeld.  When I asked her what she thought of the movie, her response was something along the line of:

"Well, the first part was war, talk, war, talk, war, talk.  The second part was just mainly war."

Hmmm, I've been thinking about what non-fiction book I would write. I've considered writing about the way we saved an amusement park from developers. I actually have interviews of all the major players and a lot of minor players that I did after we made it.  I can't remember the number now, but i think we raised 7 million dollars in 6 weeks.  Kids did lemonade stands, two of us organized a telethon on local TV that raised 40,000. We didn't really have one or two "Angels" the community raised at least 75% of it.

It was 10 years ago, when I lived at the lake.  I don't think I worked more than a couple days that whole month.  Marilyn Maye was at every single event we did.  I've never interviewed her about it, I should do that when she comes to Okoboji next summer.   She was fabulous about it.   She's been going to Okoboji every year since....gees maybe forever!

Back in the 70s I took a large Y cut subway token, had it cleaned and made into a necklace.  I still have it somewhere.

"In heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here, and when we're gone from here, our friends will be drinking all the beer"

When I was at Iowa the marching band played this every time the football team scored.  They also played the song "cocaine" and the crowd sang along.   Well first the song "Cocaine" was forbidden, now they can only play the beer polka as a victory polka at the end of the game and only one chorus.     Times have certainly changed, but I'm glad they got to play it at the Orange Bowl!

Oy, I spent the day reviewing music titles.  The best one was the great new Michael Tilson Thomas series KEEPING SCORE.  I've already done two episodes.  Today's was Berlioz and Symphonie Fantastique.  Then there was the mostly excellent Jose Feliciano Paris concert Blu-ray.  And lastly, a good, if exhausting, audio only Blu-ray of Mahler's Second featuring world renowned (not) conductor Oleg Caetani.  It was actually a surprisingly visceral performance.  I of course grew up listening to Mahler done under the baton of Grand Prix du Disque winner Maurice Abravanel, whose Mahler cycle was iconic in its day, so it's hard to impress me.  You haven't heard Mahler's choral pieces until you've heard them sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the Tabernacle (which is where the Utah Symphony used to perform).
