Well, you've read the notes, the notes were ready for their close-up, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they ARE big - it's the udders that got small.

Lovely office for new aunt DR CILLA LIZ.

Lovely ballet photos.

More writing from MR BK.

I do not like shell fish of any kind.  It can set on the plate with the sushi.

Good morning, all! The laundry is in the washers and I'm wanting to go back to bed. I've got a bit of work on Messrs Victor Herbert and Jerome Kern this morning. At 3 pm, I 'm meeting Bruce Pomahac to see EARNEST IN LOVE at the Irish Rep, so my first priority is to wrap his Christmas gift.

I really enjoyed the food at Vice Versa; my friend Doug had lamb, I have no memory what his partner Tom had, and I had the cod. It was quite tasty and the company was excellent; Doug was a freshman in the theatre dept when I was a first year grad student, and we did not get along until a summer theatre production of ARSENIC AND OLD LADY, in which he played Jonathan. In June 1973, he called me from the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival where he was running the concession stand to see if I wanted a summer job; the box office manager had proven incompetent and had screwed up tickets for the season. Doug had been alternating between box office and concessions and the young lady hired to help the box office manager was now managing the whole shebang and she needed help ASAP. The call was on Thursday and I had to be there by noon, Saturday. So on Friday morning I drove from Cincinnati to the Berkshires and arrived at Jacob's Pillow, outside Lee, MA, at 11:45 am. It was one of the best summers of my life.

Shellfish? Steamed clams or mussels, clam chowder, Manhattan or New England, oysters fried or stewed,  shrimp and prawn in anything Italian or Chinese.

15 degrees this morning and no break from this until Tuesday. It was REALLY cold last night, and even with my heat set on 60 during the sleep hours, my furnace ran most of the night.

Today I'll watch LES RENDEZ-VOUS D'ANNA, but it will likely be tonight since I know I have several planned interruptions this afternoon which will prevent concentration on the movie, and it is over two hours long (by far the longest of the five films in this set). The rest of the review is written, so all I have to do is watch this and then plug in the comments on this film, and I'll be set!

Since I watched both MEDIUM and GHOST WHISPERER last night, I think the only remaining TV on the DVR is one more episode of BETTER OFF TED. Tonight there is another ABC rerun of CASTLE which the DVR will pick up. That's what I'll watch as I eat lunch tomorrow.

I am most excited about the possibility of having Sunday completely off. I have quite a few Blu-rays here bought on sale over the holidays and given as gifts that I haven't gotten to explore, so tomorrow should be a really fun day.

And I have two more episodes of THE MENTALIST in the first season set, and then it'll get put back on the shelf as I began going through ROME - both seasons on Blu-ray, not to review (it's been out quite a while) but for my own entertainment.

LOVE the title of the notes!!!!  I'm such a "Sunset" whore when it comes to the musical and to some extents, the movie.

"You there, why are you so late?"  and I do mean YOU!

Off to auditions for Rent two jammed packed days of auditions which is unheard of with this company for a long time.  I'd like to think it's because of who is directing/choreographing and who is musical directing, but I know it's just about the show!!   As I was going through the score and picking out sides for callbacks, I realized what an important show this is for me as a musical director and as a person.  I've always been a huge fan of the show, it's music, and especially it's message.  I almost feel as excited as I was to MD Aspects of Love, which was another one of my top 5 shows.

If you asked me, I could write a book....

DR Jose, I have boxes and boxes of books that I will start taking to the office this weekend.  I'm actually thrilled to have all the shelves so I can do something with all my books. Once the books are out of the house I will be able to better finish working on the house.

I know I've been talking about the office for months, but we haven't even been in there a week yet!

The Oregonian is reporting that foreclosures are up 65% in 2009 and forecasts expect 2010 to be even worse.  So there will evidently be lots of houses to choose from.  We're going back today to that one I posted pics of (blame Cilla) so that the kids can see it.

Yes, one other "serious" contender, plus a couple of "Plan B"'s.  This house today keeps Gabe in the same HS district, which Betsy really wants to try to do.  That said, it's a bit more problematic for me, commute wise.  The other contender is better for everyone, public transit wise, but Gabe would either need to change high schools or have a long bus ride every morning.

I've had a disturbing phone call concerning one of my jobs and I am debating how to proceed. My initial impulse is to bail as well as to send a scathing email to the "friend" who's caused all the problems with the job since last July. Luckily, I will be out of here shortly to see EARNEST IN LOVE and I hopefully will not think about it the remainder of the day.

I was thinking of heading back down to the Lincoln Center Atrium earlier this morning to get another numbered bracelet for their "20 for 20" promotion since tickets to the Metropolitan Opera's production of Turandot were being offered today.  Well, once I realized that I needed another hour of sleep more than I needed to see - and hear - a somewhat mediocre Calaf - I went back to bed for a bit.  Then when I finally sat up and put my feet on the ground....

Whoa!

I had some major dizziness.  I just sat on the edge of my bed for a minute or so.  Maybe I just got up too fast?  Well... Then I started to walk into the living room...

Whoa!

I've never really experienced any kind of vertigo before, and I guess this was this (that was that?).  After cautiously walking around for a bit, I settled back into bed, and then about two hours later...

Not so Whoa!...

So, I'm just taking it easy right now.  Even though I'm prone to ear and sinus stuff, I have a feeling that this may be a reaction to too much MSG.  I went out to Flushing last night with some friends for some Chinese-Sichuan food. We were all commenting on just how good the food tasted last night - like it had gotten better.  Well, I think I might know why everything tasted "better" last night.

...and PYAAR IMPOSSIBLE will not likely play anywhere near me. The only theater showing Bollywood in these parts is now an hour and a half drive from Salem, in Hillsboro. When it was in Beaverton (only a 45 minute drive) I would go occasionally.

On a sad note, Art Clokey, creator of Gumby and "Davey and Goliath" died in his sleep Friday at age 88.

Gumby was my introduction to clay animation, and it fascinated me as a child, and still does even today.

We're back from our second tour of La Mini-Manse ;).  We think we will make an offer.  It does have the troubling leak in the storeroom, but the listing agent is convinced it's the "water feature" in the front yard malfunctioning.  The kids really liked it, which is half the battle.  It turns out the house doesn't automatically come with the pool table and HDTV's, though the listing agent thought the sellers would be more than happy to leave them there.  That said, in making plans today we thought it made the most sense to have the pool table taken away and my grand piano can go in that space, which would have a view and be right next to the office.  I would like the one HDTV that is already mounted on the river rock fireplace to stay, so we'll leave that in as part of the offer.

the boys aren't arguing for the pool table?  we had one in our basement when the kids were in high school.  it was nice because their friend like to go to our house to play.  in fact one night as we were going to bed, & both boys were still out, bryan's friend stopped by with a friend to play.  he had seen craig who told him it was ok & he would be home shortly, as would be bryan.  it was funny letting him in & going to bed, kind of nice too.

From Jennifer:
Quote
do both of your insurances pay for most of the costs?

That is one very good thing about living in canada. Ambulance and hospital costs = 0.

Everyone’s insurance, if they have insurance, is different.  After I pay a fairly high deductible, and the procedure is approved, my insurance pays 70% of the bill.  If I use a medical provider within the insurance plan the bill is often reduced to an agreed amount.  The insurance companies have set amounts they will pay for different services & if a health provider takes the insured patient than they also agree to accept the payment plan.  After the accident I paid out so much in bills beyond my deductible that I reached a new level & several of my bills were 100% paid.

It is a new year & I have to pay everything until I reach my deductible.  I still get the discounted amount agreed between the health care provider & the insurance.  Sometimes they are the same amount or just a few dollars different.  Other times they are hundreds of dollars different.  The amount differences on some of the bills from this accident are way beyond anything I’ve seen before.  I have never been so grateful for the discount.

Jennifer, do you have any control over which doctors you see?  I was very lucky I knew the reputation of the practice of the surgeon on call.  If I hadn’t wanted him to do the surgery I had the option to get someone else, not that that would have been easy under the circumstances.

I also had time to watch the first episode in season one of ROME on Blu-ray. Very enjoyable, and I just watched it straight through. There seem to be bonus threading documentaries attached to to the show which I'll investigate when I fire it up again later tonight.

After I complete my work project, of course.

Back from my Mom's, where Rob and I packed up her computer and sewing machine for moving.  She'd saved the original boxes and all packing material for each and that made our job easy.  I'm getting very nervous (as is she) about fitting all her stuff into that studio apartment.  The furniture will be OK - my niece did a helpful scale floor plan - but all those boxes.  She only has 2 closets and not very many kitchen cupboards.

I'm going to head downstairs now to start work on my review project for today. Hopefully, I'll be finished by 8 and can watch more episodes of ROME (or something else if the mood strikes me).

JMK, having been to your lovely home, which is quite large, I have to finally ask the question what is this obsession with moving to so much larger quarters?

And I don't think you ever went downstairs, LOL.  ;)  It's not so much that we're actually out there looking for a much larger home, it's just that that's what has ended up appealing to us.  The reasons for wanting to move are manifold, including the mini-development of McMansions next door (which IIRC weren't here when you were), our semi-White Trash new neighbors, et al.  We do want the boys to finally have their own separate bedrooms and I wouldn't mind having a bit more space generally.

I just finished watching THE SEARCHERS on DVD.  It's the 50th Anniversary edition and I viewed it on my 52" LCD TV.

I know that several of you, including BK, have criticized this transfer of the film, but I thought it looked terrific.

And, the movie is, of course, the best western that either Wayne or Ford ever made.

I'm not trying to throw down the gauntlet here, but what is wrong with the transfer?

A little over 2900 sf, but we basically just live on the one floor, so 1450+ of "everyday" space.

5,000 sq feet is a lot of home to take care of.  it would be nice, imho, if you found something closer to 3,400-4,000 sq. ft.  obviously it isn't out there & if this is your home i'm sure you will use the basement area.

Throw down the gauntlet, baby.  The transfer, which is also on Blu-Ray, is VERY sharp and detailed, that part is great.  What's not great and what is, in fact, a travesty, is the color.  It's completely off and looks nothing like it should.  Skies are greenish instead of vivid Technicolor blue, and there's just way too much yellow in the transfer - everyone looks like they have jaundice.  You know you're in trouble right from the main titles, where the bricks are golden - they have never been golden EVER - they're grayish.  I have owned IB Tech prints of this film in 35mm and 16mm and I know exactly what it should look like.  When I was complaining about this loudly on every DVD board, someone who agreed with me put the images in Photoshop and took the yellow out of the transfer and added blue - that's all it took and we had a perfect image.  I posted those here back in the day.

I've written about five pages, and I'll probably write another three or so.  I'd intended to get all the writing done before dinner, but I had so many bloody interruptions, including having to read through and make notes on the new rewritten scenes of the long musical - they were really not good, and so that took a long time.  I had to proof the new release packaging (which I'll announce here this evening at midnight), and do a couple of errands and whatnot, as well as package up a bunch of orders.

This house doesn't really "feel" that big.  On the main (entry) floor are the living room, dining room, big kitchen (which is a huge selling point--as you may remember, our current kitchen is fairly small), and a nice, large family room.  (Utility room, bathroom and garage as well).  The "main" downstairs is the big rec room (with the pool table), two good sized bedrooms, the office and another bath.  The third level is the master suite (which has a huge bath and an adjoining sitting room with a fireplace, which I love.  The "extra" square footage is the kind of bizarre "add on" basement levels.  First there are two steps down from the rec room to this ornately tiled section that has what we assume was an exercise room, complete with tanning bed, steam room, and walk in shower.  Then you go down another set of stairs and there's a "media room" which would be the kids' playroom.

Jennifer, do you have any control over which doctors you see?  I was very lucky I knew the reputation of the practice of the surgeon on call.  If I hadn’t wanted him to do the surgery I had the option to get someone else, not that that would have been easy under the circumstances.

I'm not sure.  Do you mean for a surgery or just for general care?

For general care you can choose any doctor you like. In a hospital setting i'm not sure. I've only been in the hospital once. And they sent me to the hospital that specialized in the field I needed.

It's actually sort of weird because this was when i had a migraine and the clinic would not believe me and give me the medication. The hospital was across the street. But instead of seeing me there they took me in an ambulance way across town. I believe it was because that was where they had a neurology department.

i realized much of the extra sq footage is in the basement, more than you really need.  it still all needs cleaning ;)  better the extra space is in the basement.  what is the upstairs sq footage.

our 2nd michigan home was large, not as big as the house you are looking at, and much of the extra sq footage came from a terrific basement.  our 1st michigan home had a sauna.  we used it for storage.

it makes sense they wanted you seen by a specialist.  is that now on your record for approved medication.  i have a friend who occasionally needs to go to emergency for a shot of pain killer to stop a migraine.  she now knows which hospital carries the pain med she likes.  it is odd the other hospital near her doesn't carry it.

it sounds as if in a situation like mine you would be sent to an orthopedic hospital.  wherever you ended up for the surgery would you have an option to request a different surgeon?

there are insurance plans here that don't give you options.  remember when elmore couldn't switch from the idiot doctor?  if i don't use one in my plan i pay more for the services.

We woke up to find that we had no cold water in our master bathroom this morning.

Hopefully, once the temperature rises, it will thaw out...without any major damage.

~~~No Water Damage for DR Druxy!!~~~
Everything appears to be back to normal.  Faucets are running.  There appears to be no permanent damage.  [Fingers crossed.]
If it's going to be that cold again tonight, you may want to leave the faucet on just a trickle, the moving water will prevent the pipes from freezing
I've only had 2 migraines in my life. And i haven't had one since i has the hospital episode (around 10 years ago).
I don't really understand why the clinic would not give me the meds. Frankly i should have gone back to them after and had a few words with them. Because apparently the final diagnosis was that was what i had had.
I was throwing up and i had pain in my head. I told the doctor that i had had a migraine before. But i could not find the pills from the time before.
Instead of giving me the meds (i knew the name) he sent me across the street.
re: your question about your situation. I guess it depends if it's a surgery that you have to have right away.  I don't know if you have the option of requesting a different surgeon. If there is one at the hospital you are at who can do the surgery why would you want a different surgeon? I guess if you knew specifically of a different surgeon and they were available then you could ask.
Today I took 8 boxes of books from the house to the office.  I moved all the legal books to the side where the conference table is, so when you sit at the conference table you see legal books.  The books on the side with the chairs aren't legal books. Some are about legal cases other are about Presidents and others are history oriented.  It's almost all nonfiction.  I came home and boxed up 8 more boxes that I'll take down tomorrow.  I probably have at least 3 or 4 more after that.  It may not fill all the shelves, but it will make a big dent.
i wanted to be certain the doctor could do the surgery, & do it well.  even for orthopedic mine wasn't a common surgery.  the last time the surgeon did a similar one was two years ago.  he had done plenty prior to that so it was ok & he specializes in shoulders.  i didn't want anyone messing me up more than i've already messed me up.
I've given some thought to the job dilemma, and I believe that I will be walking from it; the difficulties of the past six months have taken away all my enthusiasm for the job and I cannot get myself revved up for another round of more frustration and discontent. I'm not completely set on this course of action but this is my current leaning.
Thanks Ginny.  I'm moving them in bankers boxes (the smaller ones not the long ones) and am using my luggage cart to move the boxes where I can, so it hasn 't been too bad. It's meant several trips because the cart can't handle too much weight, but that's better than a broken back!
It's actually sort of weird because this was when i had a migraine and the clinic would not believe me and give me the medication. The hospital was across the street. But instead of seeing me there they took me in an ambulance way across town. I believe it was because that was where they had a neurology department.
it makes sense they wanted you seen by a specialist.  is that now on your record for approved medication.  i have a friend who occasionally needs to go to emergency for a shot of pain killer to stop a migraine.  she now knows which hospital carries the pain med she likes.  it is odd the other hospital near her doesn't carry it.
it sounds as if in a situation like mine you would be sent to an orthopedic hospital.  wherever you ended up for the surgery would you have an option to request a different surgeon?
there are insurance plans here that don't give you options.  remember when elmore couldn't switch from the idiot doctor?  if i don't use one in my plan i pay more for the services.
I've only had 2 migraines in my life. And i haven't had one since i has the hospital episode (around 10 years ago).
I don't really understand why the clinic would not give me the meds. Frankly i should have gone back to them after and had a few words with them. Because apparently the final diagnosis was that was what i had had.
I was throwing up and i had pain in my head. I told the doctor that i had had a migraine before. But i could not find the pills from the time before.
Instead of giving me the meds (i knew the name) he sent me across the street.
re: your question about your situation. I guess it depends if it's a surgery that you have to have right away.  I don't know if you have the option of requesting a different surgeon. If there is one at the hospital you are at who can do the surgery why would you want a different surgeon? I guess if you knew specifically of a different surgeon and they were available then you could ask.
I have always based that decision on how good looking the surgeon is, and whether or not you could see his chest hair over the top of his scrubs.
then ben casey was your ideal surgeon? ;)
I watched the last Chantal Akerman film in the box set: LES RENDEZ-VOUS D'ANNA, and it was the best film in the set. Quite intriguing study of a filmmaker loving her nomadic existence and coming into contact with a series of strangers, friends, and family who represent qualities she's fleeing from by making and screening her films all over the world.
Helmut Griem (from CABARET and THE DAMNED) is heartbreaking as a divorcee longing for companionship and Jean-Pierre Cassel is in it, too, as an ex-lover of the director.
I watched the last hour of John Doyle's version of COMPANY on PBS......I have the CD and the DVD....and I always have the same reaction.....I have to go listen to the OBC to remind myself how good the show really is.
I liked SOME of the people, but hated Hated HATED the staging with the cast playing the instruments.
I have it on Blu-ray, and it looks great, but that doesn't make me like this staging any better. However, I love the show so much that I had to have what will probably be the only home video version we're ever likely to get.
Once I got my work project out of way, I continue with ROME. I finished the first episode of the series (where the gorgeous Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson rescue Caesar's stolen eagle statuary). I went back and turned on the pop-up facts and rewatched some of it with the pop-ups turned on.
I also watched episode 2 where Pompey basically plots to have the people turn against Caesar, and it sort of backfires.
I watched this one with the pop-up facts turned on from the beginning. Lots of informative stuff about the Roman legions and politics and civic matters that I knew nothing about (or if I ever did know it, I've forgotten it.)
I didn't watch any of the bonus featurettes on disc 1 (there were only two episodes on the disc). I figured I could go back some other time and watch anything else that might be in the set. Right now, I'm just interested in revisiting the episodes since it's been several years now since I first saw them.
And with Chantal Akerman now completed, I have tomorrow free and clear for myself. No decisions yet about what I'll watch, but it'll be a movie of some kind plus more episodes of ROME. I have tonight's CASTLE rerun to watch while I eat lunch, and one more episode of BETTER OFF TED on the DVR.
Jennifer, do you have any control over which doctors you see?  I was very lucky I knew the reputation of the practice of the surgeon on call.  If I hadn’t wanted him to do the surgery I had the option to get someone else, not that that would have been easy under the circumstances.
I'm not sure.  Do you mean for a surgery or just for general care?
JMK, having been to your lovely home, which is quite large, I have to finally ask the question what is this obsession with moving to so much larger quarters?
Could it be for the same reasons as guys buying HUGE speakers....or driving really expensive cars?
Finally here after a LONG day.  6 hours of Rent auditions - without a Roger in sight, unfortunately, maybe tomorrow.  Played at church this eve and came home and made the DP dinner.  He bought some chicken breast that he was going to roast in the oven, I told him to stay on the couch (again) and I took over...
This was a LOT of fun - potato chip crusted bone-in chicken breasts, angel hair pasta-roni, sauted carrots. This doesn't sound exciting - but I made up the chicken thing, and I actually had to brown some onions in a pan to cook the carrots - I'm not a fan of the onion, but the carrots were ...fabulous and it may be the first time I cooked with an onion. This is HUGE NEWS!!!! .  We started with a Campari cocktail and were going to finish with some gingerbread chocolate I got (from HIM) for Christmas, but he seems to be snoring up a storm.
All is well....
Oh Joy, the furnace went out.   I went outside and found the air intake was blocked, so i cleared it and it still won't start. I called the emergency 24-7 hotline about 1/2 hour ago and the guy on call will be over soon.  He had another call that just came in right before me so he thought it would be at least an hour. It's still in the 60s in here, last I looked, but it's below zero out, so there's no way I'm going without heat.  I don't have a service contract with them, but Edith's husband works there and the guy on call tonight has been to my house before.  I'm glad he knows me
