Title: HIGH TIME

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were high and on time, and now it is time for you to post until the high cows come home - they're currently smoking the marijuana cigarettes.

And now, the new Kritzerland release.  You know the drill - if you want it go directly to paypal - 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  If you like this film you will love this new CD - if you already have the Ryko release with all that awful intrusive dialogue, use it as a coaster.

“IN FRANCE THE GIRLS WEAR SCANTIES
BUT ON LAMB CHOPS THEY PUT PANTIES
I’M TELLING YOU IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD!”

Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition CD soundtrack to one of the most beloved films ever made:

IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD
Music Composed and Conducted by Ernest Gold

It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was Stanley Kramer’s self-professed “comedy to end all comedy,” a huge, big-budget comic extravaganza for which he assembled a cast to end all casts, starting with the leads – Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Edie Adams, Dick Shawn, Dorothy Provine, Phil Silvers, and Terry-Thomas – and then the incredible roster of supporting players and guest stars, just about everyone who was anyone in the world of comedy, names like Buster Keaton, Jack Benny, Don Knotts, Jimmy Durante, The Three Stooges, William Demarest, Jerry Lewis, Jim Backus, Andy Devine, Joe E. Brown, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, Paul Ford, Stan Freberg, Peter Falk, Selma Diamond, Sterling Holloway, Marvin Kaplan, Arnold Stang, Carl Reiner, Jesse White and on and on, and, as the glue that holds the whole thing together, the great Spencer Tracy as Captain Culpepper.  The film was shown in Ultra Panavision 70 (and advertised as being in Cinerama), gorgeous color, and six-track stereophonic sound.  It had its premiere on November 7, 1963 at the newly built Cinerama Dome Theater in Hollywood, where it then played a reserved seat road show engagement for a record-breaking sixty-seven weeks.

For the score, Kramer turned to Ernest Gold, who’d already done several films for Kramer, including The Defiant Ones, On The Beach, Inherit The Wind, and Pressure Point (which Kramer produced).  Gold turned out to be the perfect choice – one simply cannot imagine the film without Gold’s music.  For the main theme, he came up with a maddeningly and brilliantly tuneful theme, which is used throughout the score in a whole variety of guises, even sung, with mad lyrics by Mack David.  It’s a glorious merry-go-round of a score, infectious and delightful.  As Stanley Kramer said, “Since the advent of sound, music has been an essential adjunct to a motion picture.  But in the score for It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Ernest Gold has accomplished what has long been sought; he has succeeded in making the score one of the stars of the film.”

The original United Artists LP of Ernest Gold’s score was a re-recording, as was occasionally the fashion in those days.  The original CD issue of the score (long out of print) included dialogue snippets after almost every track, which unfortunately impeded the wonderful flow of the music.  We’ve eliminated all the dialogue and gone back to the original LP presentation, transferred and completely remastered from the original album masters created in 1963.  As bonus tracks, we’re thrilled to include the original film versions of the overture, main titles (both with the sound effects, which were designed to go hand in glove with Gold’s score and Saul Bass’s fantastic title design, and without), intermission, entr’acte, finale, and exit music.   The classic cover art is by the great Jack Davis.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the second week of February – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

The repair man just left.  It was expensive for what he did, but I have heat again so it was worth every dime.   It was really starting to get cold in here and since it is below zero I was worried about the pipes if I didn't get heat.

I did part of it right. The intake was full of snow.  I had waded through the drifts and cleared the snow away from it, but there was snow up in it that I didn't get and he had to suck it out with a vacuum cleaner.  Then he had to push some reset on a valve and YEAH!~!!  I have heat again.

It is now almost 3:00 AM.  I am sleepy and must go to bed.  It is warm and toasty now.  Life is good

Good morning, all! It was a weird night of unpleasant dreams, from the Macbeths and a family fight at a reunion/convention to something strange about a fear of falling from a tree. The Macbeth situation was an ugly confrontation, in which I was the loser, at a family gathering. I also spent a lot of sleepless time debating my next move following the unpleasant news, and I have begun drafting my resignation from the project.

Today I have more work on Herbert and Kern before I head out to FINIAN'S to meet Joshie for tonight's rehearsal of the band.

DR MattH, after watching GHOST WHISPERER last night (so spoilers) I am in total agreement with you. Why don't they use jim more??

It is frustrating. I thought all that sam/jim stuff was in order to use the actor more. They did for that short time, and now they hardly show him again.

Also, what was the real point of the sam/jim stuff, since they basically act like that never happened and don't bring it up.

I'm up, my neighbot has someone clearing her driveway with a big grader of some sort.  Probably her son, they have a heavy equipment company.  that's nice, but did they have to start at 7:30 on a sunday when I had a repairman here until 3:00? They're still out there working and making noise so I'm up.

bk - (from yesterday) LJ is the acronym we like to use for the website, LiveJournal.com  which is basically an online site for people to blog or journal or whatever.

Anyway, I'm awake and ready to go - 30 minutes early.  Work this morning, which will include a Family Mass hosted by our 5th grade class from the school and the Children's Choir.  This, I'm sure will be some sort of penance.  The Children's Choir director doesn't really care about quality, so if a child has enthusiasm, she'll put a mic in front of them.  It can be ear-bleeding at times.  Enthusiasm is great, but so is good musicianship at this age (grade 1-5),  If we're going to have free for all, why have a rehearsal.

If they asked me, I could write a book....

More Rent auditions today.  I'm hoping for at least 3 Roger-types so we can have some choices at callbacks next Saturday.

Paul's mom has beeen in the hospital for a couple weeks. She's in her 90s and has been having some health problems, I'm not quite sure what all of them are, but he's been up there for weeks.  He's going to call son and we're going to go for coffee.  I could use a lot of it right now

I have a lot of work to do today and need to haul the 8 boxes of books I packed to the office and put them away.

It's also supposed to get into the 20s today, so I should get out the shovel and start digging out some of the places I'm concerned will leak into the house when the snow starts melting

Good morning!

I'm hoping this is our last morning of super cold weather at least for a while. It was 15 this morning. My heat (even on 60) has been running almost constantly, though it will warm into the high 30s today and then allegedly 24 tomorrow morning. I may be able to strike off on my walks again tomorrow morning. I am very tired of the treadmill.

Yes, CHUCK has two episodes tonight back-to-back, and then begins its real third season in its regular Monday at 8 timeslot tomorrow night. I will watch the first hour tonight, but I won't make the second hour or the new BROTHERS & SISTERS which will be recorded and watched later.

BIG LOVE (which I don't watch) starts its new season tonight, and many Sunday night regulars (DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, COLD CASE, the Fox cartoons) have new episodes.

THE SIMPSONS, of course, has its 450th episode tonight celebrating 20 years on the air.

At least this bitter cold we've been having for two weeks has been dry. No rain and no real precipitation to make it a real mess. That's been the good news. (And, of course, the heating companies who have gotten rich off the many service calls to folks whose furnaces have conked out due to overuse.)

Pogue, the set is still available - pricey at about 190 bucks, but it's 15 hugely-long CDs of Rozsa stuff from MGM.  Ivanhoe, Madame Bovary, Young Bess, The Power, The VIPS, King of Kings, El Cid, and lots of other rare stuff.

I began by watching last night's CASTLE rerun. It was a good mystery beginning with the death of a bike messenger and working its way up to a New York senatorial hopeful. I think this is the first time I can remember actor Gregg Henry playing a gay character (though he did play the spoiled, mother-dominated Broadway producer in a MURDER SHE WROTE episode back in the 1980s, but his character's sexuality was not a part of the mystery and was never mentioned).

I swear to you I cannot seem to get two hours where I can just sit and write without ANY interruptions and it's REALLY beginning to annoy me.  You'd think on a Sunday that would not be a problem.  But this morning, I cleaned up yesterday's pages, then printed them out, then took them to Staples to get copied, then brought the pages to muse Margaret, then came home to write, then got a call reminding me there is a partay to go to at three, which I'd totally forgotten about, then I had to finish packaging some orders, fill out bloody customs forms, put postage on the packages, and now I'll have to shave and get ready for the partay and THEN, maybe when I return at four-ish, I'll be able to actually write a few pages before I toddle off to the dinner partay.

Then I put in ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS on Blu-ray. I reviewed the DVD version of the movie (which I gave away to my friend John's daughter), but I didn't get the Blu-ray version and wanted it instead of the DVD for my collection. I got it as a Christmas present. (Coincidentally, it has another DVD copy inside!)

The Blu-ray is a much more involving experience than the DVD was, much more dimensional in look, and the images and color just pop off the screen.

Next I watched another full episode of ROME. This is the one where Pompey, his legions, and his followers leave Rome and Caesar takes the city without having to kill a single person.

I started another ROME episode but only got halfway through. This is the one which features full frontal nudity of James Purefoy (Marc Antony) being "cleaned," and it's hard not to keep returning to that moment though the rest of the episode is quite wonderful with Vorenus going into business for himself and Caesar dining with his niece.

Well, I need to take a shower, get dressed, go to the store for a couple of things, go to my sister's to help hang a painting (it's pretty heavy, but it'll be easy to do) and then eat something at sometime.  I also need to feed my cat...again.  I fed her earlier but then she threw up (I know, TMI). :P She just does this every once in a while and then she's fine.  I'll just feed her again and all will be well. :)

Perhaps hairballs?

I don't think so.  I feed her dry food which is supposed to help prevent hairballs, and it does.  I think that there are times that she just eats too fast, because today the "stuff" was quite liquidy and really looked like it was only just food-products.

TMI.

I'm thinking SURROGATES will arrive on Blu-ray tomorrow. If it does, that will be my work project unless THE SIMPSONS arrives. SURROGATES doesn't come out for another week, but THE SIMPSONS comes out Tuesday so it would have to be first in line.

If neither of those things arrives, I'll go ahead and do the Blu-ray release of CHE which comes out on the 19th. Having already done the DVD of it, I'll just rewatch the film to check the video and audio quality.

Once again, another label has moved up a release date so that they now butt heads with our next announcement - we calculated very carefully based on this label's PUBLISHED dates of announcements, and then they move it up a week as soon as they find out when we're announcing.  They've done this twice before and I've been very vocal about it publicly and privately, but always trying to do so with a sense of humor.  Not anymore, baby, not anymore.  Let the games begin.

They've been pretty sneaky, haven't they? I'm not sure how this business works, but I like to see it as an honest schedule revision. I'm more likely to buy right away for limited edition CDs as opposed to CDs that are commercially available, however.

This morning's recital by Sasha Cooke and Ken Noda was wonderful.  Beautiful singing, sensitive and supportive accompanying, and a nicely varied program.  It really was a wonderful way to get my day - and my week - kicked off musically.
Title: Re: HIGH TIME

This morning's recital was followed by an informal Meet the Artists reception where they served coffee and mini-muffins. As I was waiting in line to meet Sasha Cooke...

Anecdote #1:

An older gentleman cut in front of me and started meeting and greeting with Sasha Cooke.  He started off with some wonderful compliments, but then said that he had one "issue" with this morning's recital.  He then went on about how she had misinterpreted one line in one of the Schumann songs.  He basically told her that the poem is told from a man's point of view, and that by having a woman sing it, the poetry was ruined for him.  She then very gently "corrected" him and pointed out that the line he mentioned is actually gender neutral.  He then started defending himself... And that's when I stepped in a little closer and extended my hand... "Thank You for a beautiful recital"... ;)

Anecdote #2 (of 2):

Another gentleman passed by me on my right, then turned toward me, smiled... Then his eyes lit up.  At first I thought he was an actor or singer I had worked with sometime in the past, but then...  "Oh! You're piano playing today was wonderful..."

-Oh, I'm sorry, I'm not Ken Noda.
"Really?"

That was when Sasha Cooke spoke up and pointed to where Ken Noda was standing.  Well...

We're both Asian.  We both wear glasses.  And we - well, I - just happened to be a pianist too.  So I can easily understand how he could have made such a mistake. ::)

Oh...

When I opened my program for this morning's recital, I noticed that the Bernstein selection that was originally announced had been replaced by two Sondheim selectons, "Take Me To The World" and "Losing My Mind". I guess that was a fair trade-off...

Thankfully, for the encore, they performed the originally programmed Bernstein selection, "What a movie!" - Dinah's aria from Trouble in Tahiti.  It brought down the house! *It's one my favorite arias, and I was glad that they had decided on the spot to go ahead and perform it :)

And then, courtesy of the generosity of a dear friend, I went to the closing performance of Ragtime.

I cried.

I cheered.

I cried.

I laughed.

I cried.

I sobbed.

I applauded.

I cheered.

I cried some more.

And I got in some good hugs before and after the show.

It really was a wonderful production, and the closing night energy in the house was truly electric.

I watched SWEET NOVEMBER which I haven't seen since 1968.....it is still the same movie.

I meant to record it, but then thinking about the amount of work projects I'll have coming up this week plus the usual prime time TV, I knew I'd never have time to watch it, and I'd likely need that DVR space at some point this week, likely on Thursday

I had decided I'd watch ROSALIE, but it was 123 minutes, and I didn't want a film that long, so I dipped into the Archive pile and pulled of Jolson's THE SINGING FOOL. A lot of songs that were Jolson evergreens, but this 1928 film really has lots of damaged places. It's barely intact for audiences to be able to watch it over eighty years later. I didn't take out the laserdisc to compare, but I'll swear I didn't remember its being in that poor condition. However, I'm sure it was, and I had just forgotten.

Then, to pass the time until CHUCK came on and got going so I could watch it on the DVR and skip commercials, I put in JUDY GARLAND: BY MYSELF, the superb Emmy-winning documentary that's on disc two in the EASTER PARADE set. Well, of course, once it started, I got swept up in it and when I looked at the clock, it was 10 p.m. and the documentary still had 15 minutes to go, so I just let it finish, and I'll watch CHUCK at some point tomorrow.

Nothing to post about, except something self-aggrandizing:

Philadelphia's Kimmel Center (where the WICKED tour is now playing - no relation to Bruce Kimmel AFAIKnow) has the CRYING POVERTY parody of DEFYING GRAVITY as its uppermost TWITTER tweet for the weekend

http://twitter.com/KimmelCenter

The tweet is:

"Crying Poverty" pardoy of WICKED's "Defying Gravity" sung from the perspective of Ruthie Madoff http://bit.ly/7n4JA4 How timely!

----------

I'm sure there will be bigger Kimmel Center news in Philly besides the parody tomorrow, though.  :)

DR Cillaliz - Are you just going to wait until the Spring thaw to recover your crowbar?

;)

*And what's a "deer block"?

The crowbar fell behind a bush that has a snow drift in front of it...so I'll wait until it thaws a little at least.

A deer block is like a block of salt only it's some sort of food and salt pressed together in a block. The deer lick it and chew on it.  It's food.

It's actually quite easy.  When you have a proper knife, the knife helps itself in a way.  Or...

*You could place some toothpicks around the "middle" of the cake as a guide for your knife.

**Or you could use dental floss - unwaxed and unflavored - to "saw" through your cake.

The secret to perfect layers doesn't lie in a knife and slicing.

Simply put 3/4 cups of batter in a pan and bake 6-8 minutes.  Repeat the process until all your batter is gone.

There's also one other cheat for perfect cake layers - and I have seen this in a few cookbooks...

Just divide the batter into three, four, six, etc. portions, then bake each portion/layer separately in their own pans.  Adjust baking times accordingly. ;)

If some cooks have that kind of time and patience, then more power to them.  For a layer cake, though, having consistent layers can be a motivator.

One can still trim off brown crust...and have a thin layer to boot.

He prefers the "jelly-roll" type ones.  It does make a difference, without the sides it gets more air flow around the cookie which can give you a crisper cookie.  The "jelly-roll" pan gives more control over the cookie in his HO.

Back from a lovelier than lovely dinner partay - great food, really nice company.  More later.  On the way out there are five steps at the bottom of a long walkway to their front door.  It's pitch black there and I very carefully got down the steps.  I then turned took three steps and went crashing to the ground because the sidewalk is cracked and pitched really high on one side of the crack and again it's pitch black there.  I went down hard on my side and my right hand hit the damn pavement so hard I thought I was going to die.  I don't think I did any serious damage as it now doesn't have serious damage sort of pain, but boy is it sore and maybe I sprained some thing.  But I can bend it and if I press near any bone there's no pain at all, just soreness.  Writing may be a little more difficult for the next few days, typing-wise.

Meanwhile, had a wonderful message from muse Margaret saying she really enjoyed the latest and also the revised stuff - I called her back to get details but they've already gone to bed, so I'll call her first thing in the morning.

I seem to have managed to make it back from the land of the dead that I have been visiting for the last week.

Saturday Jan 2nd at 8:00AM I went down to my car to go to Gelson's to get coffee and danish, to find that someone had peed on my car.  That was the last straw for this building.

So I think I found a way to make the move to Ventura.  The commute by rail will be OK to and from work.
And I can stay in town one night a week with my daughter at her grandma's, and one night at my friend Tom's.  So I would only make the drive from Ventura one morning a week, and the drive back one night a week.

I HATE THE MANAGEMENT COMPANY THAT RUNS THIS BUILDING.

My friends have owned the front house for 20 years, and they just purchased the 2nd house on the lot.  Both built in the 1920's.   The unit I will be in is being refurbished and should be ready early March.  The windows and floors are the original wood from when the house was built, it really is like going back in time, before air conditioners, before closets for storage, etc.   But the view is beautiful, you can see the ocean from the living room and bedroom windows.

This is my last move, next one is the old people home.

Bruce, take great care of your damaged areas.  Be prepared for some swelling and other discomforts, including pain.

I'd recommend tincture of arnica for it, but arnica is very hard to find these days except in a diluted gel form.
