Title: SHORT NOTES

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were short, and now it is time for you to post until the short cows come home, which will, of course, be short-ly.

We had a few days of lovely weather, but starting today, we're in for about 5 days of rain, some of it very heavy and stormy. We're hoping no more flooding will occur for anyone.

bk, I was writing a message to Patrick Richwood and see that he is one of your Facebook friends.

Here's a trailer from the short film Greg worked on; maybe he's more recognizable here?

Good morning, all! I did not get enough sleep last night and I really want to go back to bed, but I have to be at Toyland around 10 or so. That's followed by a meeting about musical theatre restoration at 1 with Bruce Pomahac at Rodgers & Hammerstein. After that, I will b glad to get home, look over today's mail, and chill out.

DR JRand59, I think you would love this journal of Lyn Murray's. Some of the gossip is outrageously funny, and all the stories about Jane Russell's mother's church are really strange, but it's an nteresting trip through Hollywood during the McCarthy blacklistings and Murray knew everyone, from the pompous Lukas Foss ("I don't do commercial work") to Gypsy Rose Lee, who put moves on Murray's girlfriend.

Stress test vibes for Druxy!

Can't tell if it's going to rain today or not. Yesterday was spectacular with temperatures up in the low 80s and sun. Went to the Botanical Gardens with my friend Carol who leaves this morning. Only a little in bloom, especially in the various green houses, but things have started sprouting and those signs of springs are most welcome. Given the recent rains, it should be a wonderful years for bluebonnets and the other wildflowers we get.

Good morning!

It was 47 during my walk this morning, a decided change from the last three-four months! I didn't need a jacket at all, and I even contemplated taking off my sweatshirt near the end (but didn't). We're supposed to have rain later today. The skies are overcast.

The UPS truck passed right on by this morning, so it looks like no TOY STORY today. That means SANJURO on Blu-ray will be my work project.

That's fine. It's only 95 minutes, and it appears to have a very limited number of bonus features: a commentary and a half hour TV excerpt on the making of the film. And the trailer.

So, I should be able to get this done all this afternoon.

Well, here's the latest unbelievable scam.  We got a call at 7:30 this morning asking whether our house was for rent.  The lady had seen a Craig's List ad with our address and data, but the email she got back was from some guy in Africa asking for first & last month's plus a security deposit.  She did a trio to get our info and called.  The posting has since been flagged for removal, but she's sending me the African guy's email and I am reporting this to the police, not that they can do anything about it.

BK question:

Last night I watched an amusing film from 1976 titled NORMAN...IS THAT YOU?

The movie featured 3 very good young actors and I am wondering if you ever came across them during your stint in 1970s Hollywood?

Michael Warren

Dennis Dugen

Vernee Watson

All three are still very active as actors, by the way, with Vernee appearing on last season's SOUTHLAND  few times.

I am very curious as to what BK will think of BLACK DYNAMITE. I watched it a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it very much. A nicely done spoof of the Blaxploitation films of the 70s.

And of course Michael Jai White is certainly nice to look at!

JRand, I think you might especially enjoy this film. Here is the trailer;

Well, I just watched the first half of last night's "American Idol", and I think I can say: "Buh-bye".  What a truly generally lackluster, non-special bunch of finalists this year. Yes, there are some front-runners, but they are outweighed by the number of average to mediocre vocalists.  Just no real competition this season - at least for me.  It's looking like this season will truly be a "popularity" contest rather than a "talent/popularity" one.

Yes, very sad about Corey Haim.  He was VERY talented but VERY troubled.

I know many folks have different views on the subject, but I hope he has found some peace...at least more than he knew as a drug-addicted teen/young man/adult.

Here's my question for Ask BK Day:

For everyone: If you are registered Independent, do you still get calls from candidates? From both Republicans and Democrats?

I am one of those folks who gets paid for generating the phone lists that political candidtes use - voters who are are registered Independent (or Decline-to-State) are a high priority on everybody's calling list because it is assumed that they may not have made up their mind and might be swayed. Your best bet for avoiding phone calls is to register with whatever party has dominence in your area (for you, that would be Republican).

der Brucer

Note: Yesterday I generated a call list (over 2000 numbers) for a city council race in California - the list was not party sensitive, it was based on voting propensity.

Car fixit on the cheap vibes for DR GEORGE.

Thanks, JRand!  I walked to work today (first time in quite a while ::)), and it was a nice, sunny and cool but not cold walk.  I may walk to work again...sometime. :D

DR George - Wear a coat.

I did!  And it was still fairly cool...but, at least it wasn't cold and raining like it was last night, when I was about to walk home.  A co-worker was able to drive me home. :)

Wednesday afternoon greetings!  Well, I reported as ordered and participated in the process, but did not get selected for the jury.  By the time the judge asked the question about medical concerns, he'd already said the civil trial (worker's comp issue) would be short - today and possibly tomorrow morning.  So, I did express my concern about prolonged sitting and he said they could seat me so that I could stand as necessary or I could leave.

<Ginny rolls the dice...>

I thanked the court for the accommodation and elected to stay.  Both attorneys asked questions, both of specific people and of the group as a whole and then we were asked to wait in the hall.  When we went back in the courtroom, a jury of 8 (plus an alternate) was seated, but I was among those dismissed (for today - I still have to call the rest of this week and next.

And, just so you know, prospective jurors in our county are not treated like royalty.

Thornton's special toffee. http://www.thorntons.co.uk/ThorntonsSite/pages/cm/cm.asp?sCCPage=404Error&cookie_test=1

Mint is my favorite, though knowing your taste you might like some with nuts.  I've never had the licorice toffee so I'm wondering if it was available last time I was in a Thornton's. I would personally skip their chocolate.  Stick to the candy bars you know & like.

Thornton's also have delicious mint humbugs.

Marks & Spencer had wonderful mint humbugs, maybe better than the ones from Thornton's.  Once day I might be able to do a side by side tasting.

Then I watched my work project of the day: SANJURO. It's a follow-up to YOJIMBO, of course, but it has a slightly different tone and (for me) wasn't as funny. However, it's certainly a fine, fine movie and one I'll revisit on Blu-ray often.

The blacks are the deepest I've ever seen, but other than that, it's really a superlative transfer. And the audio offers a choice between PCM 1.0 and DTS-HD MA 3.0. I listened to some of both but spent most of it with the 3.0 mix which does what it can to replicate the Perspecta Stereo Sound heard at some theaters.
Title: Re: SHORT NOTES
Post by: Matt H. on March 10, 2010, 01:28:48 PM
I listened to about 30 minutes of the commentary, done by the same scholar who did the one on YOJIMBO, and it's filled with lots of interesting information. Again, I'll want to go back and listen to the whole thing at some point.

The excerpt from the Kurosawa TV special on SANJURO lasted about 35 minutes. And then there was a trailer, a teaser, and a stills gallery. That was all of the bonuses they had with this one.

If you look at the list of videos on the right, there's one of Tami Tappan singing Meadowlark.  And then one of Alice Ripley in some production - my question, at what point did my arrangement of this song get put into the show?  When I recorded it (with Susan Egan) on the Schwartz album, no one had done the opening slowly - but I believe it's now in the score that way, and everyone who seems to do it now does our exact opening four bars and speed up exactly where we do.

I like this picture.

Corey on his "reality" show last year talked a lot about his life going wrong when he was "befriended" by a couple of older celebrities....one the King of Pop and the other his co-star in one of his most popular movies....and Corey Feldman agreed saying with the one of the two he had contact with, he had made a different choice.

Pretty Laura.  I enjoy living were I can drive along the nearby roads & see blue heron, bald eagles, & hawks flying overhead.  It doesn't happen on a daily basis, often they are in the distance sitting in trees & barely visible.  The hawks we see more often as they like the telephone wires.  Capturing then in photos is impossible.

What is a reduction sauce?

It is a sauce that has been reduced, boiled down until it thickens a bit, then usually "mounted" with butter.

Here's a basic primer from The Splendid Table (http://splendidtable.publicradio.org/souptonuts/kitchen_reductionsauce.html).

No, it's a follow-up to YOJIMBO. 9 knuckleheaded young samurais are taken in by a slick charlatan until they're shown the light by a traveling ronin - Sanjuro. The evil superintendent has kidnapped the honest chamberlain and Sanjuro plots to get him back home safe. However, he has to keep plotting new escapes because the Nine Stooges keep thinking they know better than he and so his job becomes twice as difficult dealing with idiots on one side and evildoers on the other.

Time for me to leave.  I'm going to a meeting of Theater Artists Olympia's play-reading committee (of which I am a member) and we're going to finalize (I think) next year's shows.

Until later!

When I went downstairs, I put in the Blu-ray of FRANTIC to watch. Well, at least Warners got the aspect ratio this time. First time I've seen it done correctly since seeing it in the theater.

It's not a stellar video transfer, and I was REALLY disappointed with the sound. Warners has encoded the sound as DTS-HD MA 2.0, but because it's done like that, I can't allow Prologic to put this mono track into the center channel where it belongs. Instead, I get it in the left and right front speakers, and a movie just seems WEIRD with dialogue coming from the front left and right channels and not from the center channel.

(I noticed that PRESUMED INNOCENT had also been done that way. Big disappointment.)

When that was over, I started watching tonight's HUMAN TARGET episode. It was a good one with some surprises and some excitement. A couple of over the top stunts, but that's part for the course for this Bond-like series.

And I ended my evening of viewing with tonight's MODERN FAMILY.

Not as hilarious as last week's, but there were some definite high points. Gloria's comments in her Colombian accent are priceless ("You can't sleep in your bed of lies"), and Mitchell's names for his pets were a scream, too (Flyza Minnelli for his bird, for example).

I got a UPS shipping notice saying that TOY STORY wasn't going to arrive until next week, so it looks like tomorrow will be BIGGER THAN LIFE on Blu-ray (unless something else comes in or I decide to take a day off.) We'll see.

Even in Germany, the director's girlfriend gets the part.

I need to head downstairs to bed, too. I have slept like the dead the last two nights, my body obviously trying to recover from the late night Oscar hours.

Good night!

I think you are refering to Ikiru, or To Live, another great Kurosawa flick.

We got small versions of the preliminary (not final) poster artwork to put in programs for other performances at the Washington Center (where we'll be performing), but I think that there's a mistake and I need to talk to someone before I post it. :-\ Otherwise, it looks good.  But like I said, it's just the preliminary artwork.

My question for ASK BK Day....Do You Know the Milky Way?

My next question for ASK BK Day - have you ever met and/or worked with Mr Pat Boone?

Where did that photo come from?  Did I provide it?  Re Pat Boone - yes, met him and you'll briefly read about it in Ye Newe Book.

I have finally finished with the book fixes and sent the manuscript to Grant via e-mail.  What a day.  I guess I'll go write the notes now.
