I am so glad Princess and the Frog was appreciated; we went to see it here in Rehoboth and were so impressed we drove up to Maryland the next week to make sure the Grandlads got to see it in a theatre.

Sadly, it seems its too much trouble now to take kids to the movies; it's easier to wait for the DVD. The DVD experience is nice, but doesn't hold a candle to the thrill  the kids get from the theatre experience - and they behave accordingly. (The 12 year old is still embarrassed if you notice him tear up :) - of course he catches me at it regularly.)

I love the score for "Faust" as well as his work on the movie "Ragtime" and the two "Toy Story" flicks. I missed "Princess and the Frog" this past winter at the theater, so I can't wait to see it on DVD. My friends in New Orleans loved the way it captured a pre-Katrina feel of the city, they said.

Good morning, all! I slept late and I'm very happy I did.

DR Jose, the news that the recording will continue on April 1 is good, so I may spend April 1 & 2 at the LoC.

My cousin Sue, our family's chronicler, is very unhappy with Uncle Bob's obituary, since his parents mentioned in the obit are really his Aunt Lucy (his mother's sister) and Uncle Henry. She's wondering how the incorrect obit got into the newspapers: most likely my cousins Mike and Geoff gave the wrong info to the funeral home, since I remember fiilling out an obituary for my dad  at the very same funeral home in 2007.
Anyway, here's the obituary:
http://www.legacy.com/Middletown/Obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=140898543

I have little to do today. The dog above me has been barking for the past 10 minutes, so that bodes ill for today. I have some writing on Victor Herbert to do, as well as WIZARD OF OZ edits.

Also, coming out this week is THE AFRICAN QUEEN in a new restoration. It's also the final film in the AFI top 100 movies that is getting a release on DVD. (Of course, for some of us, it's the Blu-ray release that's more appealing, but BOY is Paramount asking for a lot for this. I'll have to wait for a reduction in price.)

My niece and her friend watched THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG dvd yesterday (i did not watch it yet). My niece knew the story very well because she has the book (i think this helped).

She seemed to like it because she was laughing very hard.

One complaint i have about the book and which i've heard others make about the movie is the lack of time that tiana is a princess. She spends most of the movie as a frog.  I think it would have been nicer (and especially since she is the first black princess) to give her a lot more airtime.

Zach and I started PRINCESS AND THE FROG last night.  Loved the visuals, and the opening two tunes were great, but I was a bit underwhelmed by the Voodoo Doctor's big production number.  (Plus it came too soon after the previous song).  That's about as far as we got, song wise

I'm here.  I got up late (at ten) had to cull addresses from about eight more e-mails, had to write today's intro and must now get ready.  I'd intended to announce last night, and was so tired I just forgot.  I had everything ready to do so - very annoying.  But here, as promised, is your advance notice of our new release, a really fantastic score to a movie I'm particularly fond of.  It's the usual - 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

PART HEAVEN… PART HELL… PURE HAVANA

Kritzerland is very proud to present a world premiere CD soundtrack release:

CUBA
Music Composed and Conducted by Patrick Williams

Richard Lester’s 1979 film Cuba was pretty much dismissed by audiences and critics.  However, in the years since its release, people have begun to come around to its charms and the film has developed a solid following and rightfully so – it is, in fact, one of Lester’s best and most interesting films.   It is visually stunning and its period detail is astonishing.  The films is filled with memorable performances from its large cast, including Sean Connery, Brooke Adams, Chris Sarandon, Martin Balsam, Hector Elizando, and Jack Weston, among many others.  Set during the buildup to the 1959 Cuban revolution, the film covers the end of the Batista regime and the Castro takeover, adding romance and thrills and intrigue to the mix, sort of a Cuban Casablanca.

For the score, Lester turned to the great Patrick Williams.  It was, as it turned out, an absolutely inspired choice.  Williams turned in an enticing, exciting, eclectic and excellent score.  The love theme is one of his most beautiful creations, a haunted lament for a past romance, beautifully scored, with guitar and female voice taking the lead.   The score features a lot of driving percussion, and some great dynamic dramatic cues.

For this CD, the premiere release of the score, the tracks were mastered from Williams’ own tapes, which were in great condition.  We present the score as he wrote it (some of the cues did not make the film or were truncated) – at the time of the film’s release, Williams did a rough version of an album presentation (that obviously never happened), editing a few cues together for musical cohesion.  We’ve left those edited cues the way he did them, and have sequenced the score into what we hope is the best listening experience – while much of it is in film sequence order, we’ve moved a few things around to help balance the presentation.  As a bonus track we’ve included Williams’ wonderful arrangement of the Fain/Webster song, “A Certain Smile,” which appears as source music in the film in an important scene.

Patrick Williams has had an amazing career that is still going strong today.  He began scoring films in 1968 with How Sweet It Is, and since then he’s been prolific in both film and television – here is just a small sampling of his great work: Don’t Drink The Water, The Streets Of San Francisco, Incident In San Francisco (my personal favorite), San Francisco International (apparently Pat was the go-to guy for all things San Francisco), The Magician, The Harrad Summer, Cannon, Mary Tyler Moore, The Bob Newhart Show, The One and Only, Casey’s Shadow, The Cheap Detective, and many more.  Williams, like Quincy Jones, Johnny Mandel, and Lalo Schifrin, also crossed over into the worlds of arranging for singers, as well as jazz – his jazz/big band albums are fantastic and highly recommended – Dreams and Themes, Threshhold, 10th Avenue and Sinatraland.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the first week of May – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Yes Jose, it could be that I continue to heal & make progress....yet, this is the first time I didn't really exercise before a session, except during my relapse, and the change in pain was drastic.  Oddly, it was followed by a bad night, pain wise.  Bad compared to how it has been recently, not when it was almost unbearable. :)

I've spent the last couple of hours listening to the new recording of THE BEGGAR'S OPERA in the 1948 version by Benjamin Britten. This is one of my favorite operas, as DR Ginny can attest to, and this new recording is really wonderful. The original 1948 production by the English Opera Group had the British film industry interested in doing a film, but I suspect once they heard Britten's "modern" arrangements they got cold feet. The arrangements for the Peter Brook film with Laurence Olivier are very conservative.  I love the film, but I'd rather have seen the Britten version.

My cousin Sue is having a bad day: the incorrect info in Uncle Bob's obituary - I cannot believe his sons don't know their paternal grandparents' names! - is becoming an obsession. She was to pay for a new obituary for the newspaper. I told her to go to the funeral home and kick her cousins' butts.

Ah, yes, Britten's Beggar's Opera!  DR Elmore, I was thinking about you right about the time you posted that, but because of a different show that we worked on together - the Rodgers and Hart revue.  I was looking through the sheet music that my mother-in-law left in the piano bench for some Easter-y things to display and came across "Soon."  That wasn't one of the songs we searched for and couldn't find, was it?

Based on your rave review, I went out and picked up a DVD of THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG at Wal-Mart today.

So, if I don't like it, it's on YOU.

Isn't "Soon" by the Gershwins?

This afternoon I was cleaning up some things around the house and came across the file of the history of my house that was left for my by the former owners.  There were letters and articles written about the house from the daughter of the original owner.  There was a 10 year old phone number in the file....so I picked up the phone and dialed it.....she answered!!!

I told her I was the current owner of this house and she was delighted.  We talked for over an hour all about the house the neighborhood etc.   Her parents were looking through a magazine and saw a house that they liked in the French Normandy style, so the made a few alterations and had it built.  They moved in during the spring of 1934.  She was 5 years old.  They had the house until her mother went to a nursing home in 1970.

It was a  great conversation.  I had most of the info in the file, but I did find out that my bomb shelter/storm shelter is neither.  It's just a cement block building her father built to store his lawm mower and yard equipment!! Too funny.

What a fun phone call, Cillaliz! I left a history of my mother's house for the new owners when I sold her house. I doubt they left it for the guy they sold it to.

I would love to have the history of my house. I remember years ago, when I had morning sickness and a toddler (and a house strewn with toys) the original owner dropped by. I know our house had been sold several times before we moved in.

Maybe she was. The point remains about Tiana not being ABLE to be a princess until she married a prince, and that doesn't happen until the end of the film.

The movie I selected from my to-watch bookcase is one I have't seen for years but really liked when I saw it at the movies many years ago - ABSENCE OF MALICE with Paul Newman and Sally Field.

It's a VERY old transfer, looks to be one of Columbia's earliest DVD transfers, but it IS anamorphic (actually has full screen and widescreen versions on flip sides), and doesn't look too bad. I only got about 15 minutes of it watched, but that will take up much of my evening tonight.

Not a spoiler even though I haven't seen the movie yet.  I didn't know the roles were reversed from the original story.  I suppose it is good to be prepared ;)

Snow White & Cinderella were beautiful & visible throughout the story so I personally don't think you can compare them to a character that begins in the form of a frpg. ;D

It is a perfect 70 degree sunny day today.  We had a lovely hike, even if it was too short for me.  When we pulled up in the driveway Keith noticed a Red Tailed Hawk gliding & circling above us.  We watched for awhile.  I then noticed a Bald Eagle flying our way.  Briefly we had them both above us.  Such a special treat, especially the hawk gliding as it did right above us.

We were so distracted we forgot to bring the groceries in, including the ice cream.  Good thing I decided I wanted ice cream & quickly noticed our error.

Also re: the PRINCESS AND THE FROG.

Even though there have been other non-white princesses, I still think that Tiana was a big deal for some black people.

I know when i read the book (i haven't watched the movie yet) I wished that she was not a frog for most of the story.

But even after i thought this, a friend of my sister's (who is white but her daughters are black) was so looking forward to having this princess for her daughters.  She went to the theatre to see the movie and mentioned to me that both her and her husband were a bit saddened that they bothered to have the first black princess. Yet the character was barely in the movie.

Since Randy is one of my favorite songwriters, singers, film composers and all around nice guys, it's hard to chose. But "When She Loved Me" is, I think, one of the all-time greatest songs ever written for a film.

I love bk's verson of "Marie", and the new Randy album has turned out to be one of my favorites; Randy at his sarcastic best. I have been a fan of his for over 40 years, since I was in Jr. high school.

Favorite album: RANDY NEWMAN (produced by Van Dyke Parks) FAUST, LAND OF DREAMS

Favorite film scores: AVALON, AWAKENINGS, PARENTHOOD, PLEASANTVILLE...so many great ones. I use them as temp tracks all the time. I became friends with his music supervisor, Michael Roth, and he has done a wonderful job of scoring our baseball film. If anyone knows how to knock off Randy's style, it's Michael! We even got to use "Short People" in the baseball film.

When I was working in LA with him last month, he played me a demo that Alicia Keyes did when she auditioned for the role of the princess. She wasn't chosen because her speaking voice was too deep and didn't sound young enough, and the song was cut from the film, so it only exists in the demo Michael did with her, but it's wonderful. I hope it ends up being recorded for an album some day. (bk---hint...hint....)

But THAT's the story. I just don't understand that as a criticism. What she learns during the time of her transformation (as well as what the prince learns) is what the story is about. Otherwise, you wouldn't have THIS story. It'd be something else entirely.

I shall shortly be on my way to Grant's.  I managed to go through the book just looking for bad breaks and caught about thirty-five that for whatever reasons didn't get done - either I didn't originally catch them, they got introduced when we fixed em dashes, or he missed them.  Today, when we do those fixes I will not allow him to move on until we've checked that entire page to make sure nothing else has gotten screwed up.  Once we fix those, then the ONLY other things that might need fixing are things I might catch on my final proofing.

Great news about the "Cuba" score. Glad to see Brooke Adams headed to Broadway in "Lend Me a Tenor." I met her on a number of occasions in the mid-1980s when she and her sister, Lynne, ran a small theater in Lexington, N.Y., that was intented to workshop new plays. One was "Moms," about Moms Mabley amd it had Clarice Taylor and S. Epatha Merkerson long before "Law and Order" came about. Brooke did a play with a title that escapes me ("The Lloyd Adams Chronicles" maybe?) that was optioned as a TV series but went nowhere. The third was a wonderful little musical called "All Bets Off" with a score by Jamie Donnelly (N.Y. "Rocky Horror") and Danny Troob, who has orchestrated numerous shows, including "Big River." Anyway, Brooke was as nice as possible, and it was great to see her lugging around pieces of sets during scene changes and intermission as if she were just one of the crew.

I finished ABSENCE OF MALICE when I went back down. I've always enjoyed this movie, and I'm surprised something more drastic wasn't done to the Sally Field character by her boss since she did breach her journalistic ethics by revealing a source just because of pity (which, of course, allowed her to be made a fool of later in the film.)

One of the guest stars was the child actor from HEROES who's grown into a midteen now. A story of teenage murder, it was only moderately interesting. Jorja Fox has rejoined the show (still billed as a guest star), and Laurence Fishburne is very dull as the replacement for William Petersen.

Once again, I have no clue what movies I'll watch for my day off tomorrow. I'd like to get another from the to-watch bookcase and maybe a Blu-ray for the afternoon, and then a lengthier one for tomorrow evening, possibly FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD.

Thanks again to one and all for the thoughts, prayers, and condolences.  They are most appreciated.

Viewing on Monday.....funeral at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.  Always a bit disconcerting to attend services and burial in the places that are already set for yourself some years hence.

I am not a seller on EBAY.

I won an auction while at work.  I can't read my COMCAST email while at work.  There was NO mention of Invoice or problems.  Trying to be a good winner....about ten minutes later, I used PayPal to pay for the item & shipping.

When I get home a few hours later, I find the seller telling me that shipping was more than I paid, and that PayPal is telling him something is "not Available" to print out the label. I guess because the shipping amount is different.  I sent him an additional PayPal payment for the difference but he tells me it is still "unavailable" and I don't know what the hell he's talking about since the payment has been made.

Can some seller tell me what the hell he's talking about?  I have emailed PayPal about the problem....but who knows when I will hear from them.

I've never sold anything there either, so I can't be of any help, but that CERTAINLY is infuriating. Sounds like he's either trying to bilk you or back out of the deal. Neither is acceptable!

Now I'm going to head downstairs and see if I can get some sleep. I'm still reading "The Blind Mice," but it's going slowly because I've been SO tired when I've gotten into bed that I haven't been able to read but a few pages. I think I'm only page 25 of a 72-page story.

I think I just paid too quickly, DR MATTH - if I had waited an couple of hours until I got home, I would have had the right total, I think.

I reluctantly just called the PayPal helpline and surprisingly enough they were very helpful - and will be sending the seller an email telling him how to print the label manually.

I have to tell a children's story at church tomorrow. I better come up with something.

The Biblical tale of David and Bathsheba is always entertaining.

... both her and her husband were a bit saddened that they bothered to have the first black princess. Yet the character was barely in the movie.

Not true. Tiana was clearly the heart and soul of the film - wearing black skin does not define her character.

And I have another one tomorrow.

In less than 10 hours, in fact, so...

I do have to say that I had a wonderful time working with Brad Oscar today. -And once Kate Baldwin joins us on Monday, it will be like a mini-Arena Stage reunion at the Library of Congress. I'm looking forward to the laughs and hugs.

Lunch at SAIGON  was delicious. I had Lemongrass Chicken and Jim had Pho. The elderly asian couple who run the place were delightful and very friendly. My worry is that they use MSG. I have a terrible headache which even a 2 hour nap has not taken away.

Jim and I plan to indulge in SAIGON's weekday buffett soon, so if I get another headache I will know if it was or was not the food, I guess.

DR MBarnum - I seem to have become MSG-sensitive over the past few years myself.  However, I also have to make sure that I'm not eating too much seaweed - especially when it comes to some Japanese and Korean soup-bases. MSG is derived from seaweed, so... In any case, drinking something with caffeine tends to help counteract the effects of MSG - mainly since the caffeines makes it metabolize faster through your system.  -At least in my experience.

Cillaliz, that's such a wonderful thing. Given our penchant for old houses, we treasure information like this, and spend a lot of time searching for it.

It is very exciting.  I've known the information for a while through the articles and letters that Carol wrote for the former owners, but I am so glad I called today.  It was so fun to hear the little stories, like where they put the Christmas tree, how her mother had a path of stepping stones where the driveway is now and it was lined with lilac bushes, that her father would grill burgers on the stone grill in the back yard and they would eat in the gazebo (she called it the tea house). She said the hard wood floors were her mother's pride and joy and so much more.   I really should sit down tonight and try to type up the whole conversation before I forget all the stories.

TOD: I love a lot of Randy Newman songs.  Marie is really one of my favorites as is the song that was the closing theme to Cold Turkey...    He Gives Us All His Love..  I don't think that's the name of it, but that's the chorus.

Thank you to all who provided vibes for my Aunt Betty yesterday.

As expected, she passed away about 6 a.m. this morning.

My condolences, JRand.

I did take this photo last month (been waiting for the new computer to share it).  I use the orange toy as an arm rest during my exercises.  As soon as I'm done Sherlock likes to pile more toys on top & reclaim it. ;D

It looks like he's trying to bite the head off a lamb!!!

Finally back from a very long book session.  Before I left to go to Grant's, I'd managed to go through the latest galley and find, I hope, all the bad breaks.  We fixed those first.  Then we chose where the sixteen pages of photos are going, then he began the task of figuring all that out.  At some point we took a dinner break and then continued.  We got eight of the sixteen pages done, and really most of the stuff that's left is Nudie, a few TV shows, a little Creature Wasn't Nice, and the Playboy stuff I did.

When I got home there was a big fire truck in front of the monstrosity next door.  I don't know what the problem was, but it's sort of amusing that the newest house in the neighborhood had some problem.  Frankly, I have never seen anyone go in or out of the house, save for one time - if that was the owner of this 1.5 million dollar monstrosity, I'd say he was about twenty-four.  There were two BMWs in the garage there this evening, and in the yard was that young man and a young gal.
