Well, you've read the notes, the notes were humungous, and now it is time for you to post until the humungous cows come home.

Good morning, all! The neighbor above me considerately had sex between 11:15 and 11:45 last night, noisy as it was with a very vocal finish, so I slept solidly until 4:48 this morning when I woke and could not get back to sleep. I know that one of the reasons is tonight's concert at the Library of Congress and, outside of a few friends involved whom I wish well, I hope it's a disaster for a few of my associates on the project now in charge. It's hard to let go of something wrapped around five years of your life. Another is my own situation caught up in conflicting workloads involving a public domain theatrical title and a third is scheduling recording sessions in the fall and dealing with disorganized people who prefer to do things ass backwards rather than wait until everything is in order.  Who's got time for a personal life when your entire working life is a mess?

So, I'm up. And my advice: never trust a drunk, especially those with late night phone calls stroking your ego.

DR Elmore - As for your upstairs neighbor, just go up there next time - or preferably before "next time" - and talk to him in person. He's a neighbor, not a stranger.

As for the Library of Congress "mess", just let it go. If it's meant to fail, it will fail - with or without your mis-imtentions. All you're doing to yourself right now is stressing yourself out over something you have no control over, and something that you are no longer a part of. All that ill will you're sending out there right now is gonna end up nowhere except looping right back to you. -Karma and all that.

You should still be proud of the work and effort you put into "Life Begins at 8:40". The 22 other musicians (alas, no longer "23 other musicians") sharing the stage with me in Coolidge Auditorium truly appreciate your past devotion and dedication to this project, and we are doing are doing our darnedest to do well by you. Thank You.

And here is the last of the blurbs - I am interested in hearing opinions:

I love Jimmy Kimmel’s book.  Wait, what? This isn’t Jimmy’s? Oh. Oh, BRUCE Kimmel.  How can I not love a book by someone who has lived as long as I have and made peace with being called Bruce?  Thank kimmel it’s also a sweet, funny, honest, real book about a real person’s trek through the unreal world of Hollywood.  I’m almost glad he didn’t make it as an actor – someone has to produce the original cast album of my new show, OOM PAH PAH BOOM, THE HINDENURG MUSICAL!

I like the blurb, it's fun. Is the misspelling of Hindenurg for Hindenburg intentional?

RE:  Vilanch's blurb.  Well, it's amusing; funnier if you happen to know who Bruce Vilanch is.  But I think it depends on understanding Vilanch's humour and it also takes for granted that you know something about Bruce Kimmel's career before you've read the book...that he was an actor and is now a record producer.  I don't like the phrase "he didn't make it as an actor", because, frankly, you did.  You could have continue it in that profession.

TOD:  There used to be a place in Dallas (on Lover's Lane) called the Rib, which was an all-you-can eat B-B-Q place.  Maybe the best que I ever ate.  Larry Drake and I used to go every six months or so.  When we started going it was probably $11-!2 ; I think it escalated to $15 (this was back in the mid-seventies).  It was all served to you by red-liveried waiters, starting with hot links and moving on up to ribs, chicken, brisket.  Larry and I would eat to the point of discomfort, waddle out to the car, pop the top button our pants and then flip a coin to see who would be driving us back home.

I'm getting used to it - it's actually reminiscent of Gary Owens' blurbs on the Kritzer books.  Hindenburg will be fixed.

I'm a huge eater now, so eating amazing amounts of food is nothing new.

But when I was a kid, I was a very picky eater and razor thin, so I never ate much, never had a big appetite.

But there was one thing that could make me pack in the food, and that was fried chicken.

There was a drive-in called The Clock that served these huge chicken dinners: five pieces of chicken (the usual four main pieces and the wishbone), fries, slaw, roll, and I used to eat those dinners every time we'd stop there for lunch or dinner.

Know what those dinners cost back then? 99 cents!

This may not have been the most lavish meal I've ever had, but it was certainly the most memorable (and being a foodie, I had to take pictures). Friends and I were traveling in Lisbon for a week. It was our last day and we couldn't find a place to have lunch. We discounted three or four restaurants that looked, well, too boring. When we landed at the door of Nune's, Pam said this was the place. We went in and told the waiter to serve us something. This was his choice. A lobster, five different types of shrimp, a crab shell filled with crab salad, whelks (I wouldn't recommend), barnacles (I also wouldn't recommend), a ham that was better than the best serrano I ever had, and Portuguese beer. We cleared the platter of all but the whelks and barnacles. Hours later when it was time for our last week, we waddled back to Nune's and the waiter greeted us with looked like a 5-pound lobster under his arm. We couldn't eat that much, but we settled for a wonderful meal from the menu, which we really didn't have room for. But it made our last day in Lisbon something wonderful.

Happy birthday, Stephen Sondheim

In response to the earlier posting from Dan the Man, I'm listening to some of the concert recordings, such as "Sondheim at Carnegie Hall" and "A Stephen Sondheim Evening." The other day I listened to "Sondheim: A Musical Tribute" and had forgotten how good some of the songs, especially complete versions of "Follies" selections, proved to be.

When I write a book jacket blurb, I always go on the assumption that the reader knows nothing...doesn't know who the author is, doesn't know who the blurb-writer is.  I know ninety-nine percent of people reading my blurb don't know Charles Edward Pogue, which is why I always slug my blurbs with my screenplay credits.  They may not know me but they might have seen one of my movies.  They may not know Rupert Holmes, but seen one of his plays or heard one of his songs.  It's our credits that give us any credibility as a blurb writer, more than our names (unless your name happens to be Stephen King or John Grisham or Steven Sondheim).

When writing my blurb, maintaining the assumption the reader has never heard of the author (again, if your John Grisham or Stephen King, you don't need a blurb endorsing your work), I try to convey some reason in the body of the blurb, why the reader might want to get to know him.

But the blurb should always be about the author; not the blurb writer.

I submitted my 20th review for the month yesterday, so I actually have a day or two off before the slog begins again.  I do have the third season of MAD MEN to look forward to this month, never caught any of it when it was broadcast (save, by sheer coinky-dink, a few minutes last night when I was channel surfing), so it will be fun to catch up.  I have been trying to keep an open mind vis a vis this US cut of RED CLIFF, but I am finding it pretty tedious.  I have the uncut version on the way, hopefully that's better.

Yes, this is going to be a BUSY week on TV.  It's going to be tough trying to watch many of these shows rather than recording them, but sacrifices must be made.  I am also recording, throughout the week,  the 2010 World Figure Skating Championships on Universal Sports (analog)....apparently, that's the only channel I have that is airing them.  Those with the USPTS HD channel may also be getting the "optimal" broadcasts.

BK, I think I've put my finger on (or at least can articulate better) what troubles me about the Vilanch quote besides the "didn't make it as an actor" part.  It is the assumption that everyone knows who you and he are.  Yes, people here and people who are already inclined to buy the book know that, but what about those who don't?

If people reading the blurb on the back of the jacket have no idea that you're a CD producer of theatre music, the joke falls flat.  The punchline is predicated on the assumption of the reader having knowledge that he may not have.

But then...I may just be over-analyzing it.

I know you don't want to wake up other neighbors at night by being noisy. But man i'd be so tempted to take my stereo and aim it right at the ceiling of his bedroom right when he was trying to sleep. Maybe then he'd understand about being disturbed!

Surely there will be information about Bruce and his career either on the inside folds of the dustjacket or the back cover itself, won't there?

Welcome to the Over-analyzer's Club, DR Charles Pogue! As a charter member, I guess most of the people on the first pass of book purchasers will know Bruce's ouevre and want to know more about him. It's the second round of purchases that will be informed of our BK's career progression from the tome.

Hello, everyone.

Bruce, I'm afraid I really don't think that the Bruce Vilanch blurb is a good one. Yes, on the surface it's positive, but there are several not-so-subtle undertones. People reading blurbs often are reading them quickly and not carefully, and at first glance this could EASILY be misread. Perhaps one needs to know Mr Vilanch, which I do not. You should not assume that others do so. I may be the only nay here, but I didn't find it funny and I didn't find it positive.

And I understand about "didn't make it as an actor" which I think will read better as "didn't continue as an actor" - and he's fine with that.

Yes, the more I look at it, the more I like it with that change to "I'm almost glad he didn't continue as an actor"

I think this resolves the uncertainty you were feeling.

I think it sounds better.

I used to live upstairs over a couple who fought constantly. they were both physically abusive to each other, and, as I look back on it, it was the way their relationship worked. It was ugly for meand I never said anything (they were the landlords). I just moved as soon as the lease was over, but it was a horrible year.  I felt like I was a part of their screwed up world. I don't care if he wants to stay out all night. What I resent is his complete lack of concern for his neighbors: no carpet to muffle anything, heavy walking around, the squeaky bed which is also very noisy to fold out, letting the door slam behind him, and the noisy sex. If he wants to whore around from 11 pm to 3 am, the least the ass could do is unfold the bed before he leaves or purchase a sturdier bed, put down some carpet, and show some damned consideration for my friendly but aggressive attempts to resolve this since January.

Better yet, he could be murdered on the streets.

I started watching the BD of LA CONFIDENTIAL last night, got it free from the Warner Rewards program.  I'd forgotten how many incredible people are in it, including a very young Simon Baker.  Fun to revisit after so long.

Yes, and SImon Baker uses a fuller name in the credits in this. I loved the part he played in the film, but I love the film, so I think everyone in it is pretty sensational.

I must head downstairs now to get cleaned up for lunch out today with best friend John. I recorded DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES last night because of John Barrowman's guest star role (and I understand Andrew is back in some plot line with his mother), so I'll likely watch that before I get picked up for lunch.

WBBL.

I didn't watch DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES yet but i'm curious about John Barrowman.  Andrew has been back for a while now.

I wouldn't know. I dropped the show after the season premiere, and watching this today, I remember why. More about this in a minute.

I'm in the same boat, DR Jane, and I am not happy about it. I am hoping and praying that NBC will see fit to put the shows on one of the On Demand channels I have here. Sports On Demand or Entertainment On Demand. I guess it's too much to hope for the High Definition Showcase On Demand, but I won't squawk if they put it on SOME channel we get on our Time-Warner cable system. We don't have Universal Sports, neither the analog nor the digiital/high def versions.

I haven't decided yet if I'll continue to record the show and watch the portions I'm interested in or just skip it all together.

I don't know what is wrong with this season. But the teams are not very good at all. I cannot find a single team that i find to be good.  And it's sort of annoying that they've had 2 legs in a row without any way for teams to catch up. No airports.  How would the last place team ever be able to catch up. They started 2 1/2 hours behind.  I will say that i liked how there were actually challenges involved at the roadblocks detours. I loved that there were 2 places with the same name in 2 different towns. And i loved that the grapes task and champagne task involved some sort of challenge. I hate it when teams simply get to a task and then everyone is able to do it easily.  I am curious if people think that jeff made a smart move switching tasks when he saw the other couple still there.  I could see why some would think it was smart. Since he probably thought that they had be doing that task for hours. But i thought it was dumb. Fight it out at the same task and then at least you can see if they find the grapes or not.  I like jeff and jordan. ANd they had so much potential at the beginning. They were working together. But they just lost it in recent weeks.  It's interesting to watch brent and caite (i'm not sure how to spell their names). She really does control that team. When she is on they do well. When she pouts they lose it. Her attitude when they tried to find the grapes the first time made me want to hurt her. So petty. The one thing i do like about her is that she seems to be much more competitive than most of the people who are on the show. And i really think that is an important attribute.

One thing that has bugged me when putting in a dvd is that i always wished i could get right to the movie. Hitting menu a bunch of times usually helps. But still there are always those notices and it just ends up taking forever to get to the film.

My brother-in-law read this (and i tried it and it worked). But when you put in the dvd hit "stop stop play" and you get right to the start of the movie!

I decided to rewatch CHARADE which is a great movie and never loses its luster even after all these years. Too bad it couldn't have been made with a stereo soundtrack so it would be more enveloping sound-wise on home video. That's not a slam against it since stereo recording wasn't the norm back then, but it's SUCH an outstanding comedy thriller. Can't think of many others that can compare with it.

I rather doubt it since every disc is authored differently by the different houses that produce these discs.

And sometimes I wouldn't want to go right into the movie because I'd need to choose the audio I'd want to hear for the film. Some discs offer two or three different English audio tracks.

Hitting the menu button will often take one right to the disc menu and that's always where I prefer to start on any disc, DVD or Blu-ray.

IagreeI doubt there's one person off this board buying the book who does not know who Bruce Vilanch is. He's on tv, there was a wonderful documentary about him, he was on Broadway in HAIRSPRAY. The book's about show biz.

I know the name but I had to look at a photo to remember who he is, & I don't know his work.

I agree, DR Jennifer. Vilanch is on tv regularly, he was on Broadway in HAIRSPRAY, he's appeared in documentaries about Bette Midler and others, and he himself was the subject of a good documentary. The book's a show biz book, and, outside of the people on this board, anyone who's buying the book most likely know who he is. As to the blurb? It's funny so why torture it to death? It will see books.

A Very Happy Birthday to Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber!

I'm going to listen to Love Never Dies.  I started it last week, but I wasn't able to get through the first disc...because of my situation at work, not because I "couldn't get through it."  After that, I have my own CD made from the DVD audio track of, "Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Royal Albert Hall Celebration" from 1998, where "The Heart Is Slow To Learn" was first performed.  This song was rewritten to be "Our Kind of Love" from ALW's The Beautiful Game, and now it's become the title song to Love Never Dies

I prefer the song "Our Kind of Love" to the other two versions, even though it's not its final form.

I agree about Charade. Another comedy thriller with a couple with excellent chemistry is Hopscotch with Glenda Jackson (underused) and Walter Matthau. but it's not on quite the same level.

Then I skimmed through today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE Nothing of interest.

I'm wondering if Scott Clifton was mortally wounded today. I think they're killing him off. I passed him at Lincoln Center about two weeks ago, and if I'd known he had been written off the show, I would have spoken to him.

Yes, they are. He's part of a massive cast reduction by the show. Too bad they're getting rid of potentially interesting characters and keeping the tired ones whose storylines were played out long ago.

Didn't LA CONFIDENTIAL win the Screenplay Oscar the year of the Titanic landslide?

Yes, that and Kim Basinger's award were the only two earned by the film, a horrific oversight, I feel.

Seems I won't be watching this at all since I don't seem to have a channel that is airing it.

DR Elmore that neighbor above you sounds like a real jerk.  I don't know what exactly I'd do. But if he won't try to be more considerate there has to be something. I know i would not be able to let it go.  I"m surprised the landlord or building manager won't get involved.

I know you don't want to wake up other neighbors at night by being noisy. But man i'd be so tempted to take my stereo and aim it right at the ceiling of his bedroom right when he was trying to sleep. Maybe then he'd understand about being disturbed!

I would go bang loudly on his door next time, and maybe every time.   You are awake anyway.
You never know, he might invite you to join in! (Just kidding)

I don't envy you your nocturnal madness.

Maybe you should gift wrap a can of W/D40 and leave it at his front door?

For people who watch a lot of dvds (some may already know this).

Does this work for every movie??

I think so. I tried it on a few and so did my brother-in-law.

I tried the "stop stop play" and it went right to the start of the movie. Then i hit "menu" and was able to change the audio and then i hit play. And it went right back to the beginning of the movie.

When I went back down, I did indeed watch ROXIE HART. Ginger Rogers seems to be having the time of her life playing the part, and she's even given a little singing and dancing to do even though this isn't a musical by any stretch of the imagination. She does do an impressive tap up and down the stairs a la "Bojangles" Robinson, and you can see she's doing it live with her own tap sounds and doesn't appear to have been sweetened later with additional taps.

When that was finished (it's not a long film at all), I put in ANOTHER THIN MAN (third in the series). It's always been my favorite of the series; I think the mystery is the strongest (the original may have just as strong a mystery) even if some arbitrary cutting in the film leaves some scenes lacking continuity.

And I concluded my evening viewing with tonight's '24.' I was very disappointed that the writers fell back on a surprise revelation from season one tonight. That doesn't diminish the very real action, excitement, and tension present in the episode, but if the writers have to reuse surprises from previous seasons, perhaps it's best if the series does call it a "day" after this season is over.

Then I finally got a new car -  I bought helast one 15 years ago and now have 220300 miles on it - since the last rather scary experience when suddenly the car 's steering wnet out  Vixdad has been pressuring me to find something new -

So my evenings  and weekends have been devoted to the great car search -

I have always wanted a minivan  and finally I have one!

I am leasing rather than buying  as it was more affordable and really - in three years time I may no longer want a minvan with the Vixter in  college....

but for the moment I am the proud driver of a 2010 Honda Odessy -- and I LOVE it!!!

Then this past week was the Vixter's high school musicvasl- Once a Upon A Mattress - it was a lot of fun - and althoughthe Vixter had no lines to speak of  (well she had three lines  "Yes" "Yes" and "OH" )  she was as featured dancer and singer through out the production a nd more importantly she had a great time

Well, muse Margaret has heard all three blurbs and she HATED Mr. Vilanch's blurb and decreed it had to go - it was not friendly-sounding, no matter how it was meant (and I know it was meant well).  Muse Margaret is unerring in her knowing what's right and wrong for me, book-wise, and so that's the decision.

I don't know if I agree with Muse Margaret. Bruce Vilanch is a pretty big name to have on the book. I'd have him address her concerns before i'd scrap what he wrote.

Grant feels we should use it, as well.  I'm going to try and edit it to see if we can make it less problematic.  Perhaps deleting the opening Jimmy Kimmel comments and going right to Bruce's "How could I not love a book," comment.  That would get us to the pertinent part of the blurb faster.  But right now, no matter how big a name he is, the blurb just doesn't feel good to me.  Grant found it very funny in a MAD magazine way - so maybe I'm just being too sensitive about it and not having enough of a sense of humor.  But so many have found it unfunny or confusing, and I cannot have that problem with a blurb.

BK, you can add The Lovely Wife's name to the con group about the Vilanch blurb.  I read it to her with no editorial preface and her immediate comment was: "I hate it.  It's all about him."  She may have a vague consciousness of him; but I doubt she would really know him if she saw him or know why he is a celebrity.

Re: the blurb, while amusing, you have to ask yourself is it effective and does it serve its intended purpose.  Remember that most people who come here know you and your career and Vilanch and his career quite well, so they can better understand the context of his humour, but I think to the uninitiated reader (and, trust me, Vilanch is not as well known in most quarters as he is here), I think you're right that it may sound unfunny or confusing.

Also trust your own initial instincts. Usually when you post your blurbs on here, you say something along the lines of "I want to share this wonderful blurb with you."  Today it was:  "I have this blurb; I'd like your opinions."  Obviously, there was something that troubled you about it from the get go.

Good Evening!

I am soooo looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow.  -Well, at least past 8:00.  And not having to spend 13 hours in Coolidge Auditorium - even though I had a wonderful time today. And yesterday. And the day before that. ;)

I like my fellow Bruce - Vilanch - and I enjoyed his blurb; BUT...

I suspect Margaret is right - his "tone" just does not jibe with your "tone"; efforts to rework his blub to change its tone would make the end result seem unlike Vilanch.

As for the concert...

It went well.  It was a nice warm-up for next week's recording sessions. ;)

When I walked out beforehand, I noticed an old friend of mine sitting in the front row. He just happened to be at the concert tonight, and didn't know I was playing.  We haven't seen each other in about four years, and we were able to catch up a bit afterwards too. I also noticed a couple of other friends during intermission.  :)

And...

Since FDR Jason happened to be in town today, we were able to meet up for dinner during my dinner break.  It was great seeing him again, and he really liked the Milky Way Malt Milkshake at Good Stuff Eatery ("Top Chef" Spike's place).

JMK, in the mail today Keith received copies of 2 death certificates for you.  I put them in an envelope to forward to you & they will be mailed tomorrow or Thursday, depending which day we go to the post office.

JMK died twice?

I was about to ask the same thing.

Or maybe he just wants to approve the final design and layout?  ::)

As for the Vilanch blurb...

BK's forthcoming book would obviously be shelved with other Entertainment Industry related books in a bookstore.  People browsing the shelves would most likely have some sort of knowledge who Bruce Vilanch is.  Even judging from the title of the book, that would also set up certain expectations(?) about who would be blurbing the book.  Yes, blurbs are meant to pique interest in a book, but a truly "cold" purchase of a book is truly rare thing.

I guess the question that bk should should ask him/yourself is: Do I want Bruce Vilanch's fan base to read my book?

Well... I'm starting to fade.  I do want to sleep in a little tomorrow, but I also don't want to sleep the whole day.  I want to do some visiting and sight-seeing tomorrow, and I'm hoping to have dinner with my John Michael, Alyssa and Emily tomorrow night: "Uncle Jojo Time"!  :)

Goodnight.
