Well, you've read the notes, the notes were exotic and had music, and now it is time for you to post until the exotic cows come home.

If it's not to late to comment on a title for Edisaurus' doc:

I propose a combination of these two:

Quote
Making It Home (besides the baseball metaphor, the film is about Jews becoming at home in America)

In the now notorious case of our evil neighbor whose assests were frozen and he was consequently forced to discharge his pricey attorney -  FJL posed:

Quote
If this stands up, what's to stop the government/prosecution from using this reason (that the money is needed to compensate the victims) to freeze any defendant's funds, and as a result keep that defendant from getting a vigorous defense?

Implicit in this quandry is the unfortuanate implication (arguably true) that money buys a better defense then the state provides.

(This is one case in which I doubt ABC will pay $200,000 for the photographs >:( )

I don't know what case you are talking about, but it sounds like it's civil. I don't think the state provides you a lawyer for a civil case.

TCB, I hope you're feeling better today.

We always keep a light or two on in the house at night so we can see where we're going. My large black love cat, Bailey, sleeps under my dresser next to the heating vent and it's easy to step on him if I'm not paying attention.

When he gets too hot, he climbs into bed between us and snuggles in under the covers. It's kind of like those bed warmer things they used to use with coals from the fireplace in a metal container on a pole. Except alive.

Good morning, all!

The neighbor was relatively quiet last night: a door slam around 11:45, some heavy walking and the bed being unfolded around midnight. I awoke at 6:30 for the McGlinnventory to find an email from our paralegal who is still sick, so I went back to bed and slept until 8:30. In another hour I will wonder down to Toyland to pick up a score for THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER and work on it the rest of the day.

Bogart is my all-time favorite actor, so:

CASABLANCA
THE MALTESE FALCON
KEY LARGO
HIGH SIERRA
THE AFRICAN QUEEN
THE CAINE MUTINY
THE DESPERATE HOURS
THE ROARING TWENTIES
THE OKLAHOMA KID
ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT
DEAD RECKONING
THE BIG SLEEP
DARK PASSAGE
THE HARDER THEY FALL
SAHARA
THE ENFORCER
THE TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE

etc., etc.

For me, Hepburn is second only to Carole Lombard:

WOMAN OF THE YEAR
ADAM'S RIB
PAT & MIKE
THE AFRICAN QUEEN
THE PHILADELPHIA STORY
GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER
THE LION IN WINTER
THE RAINMAKER
STATE OF THE UNION
ON GOLDEN POND
SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER

bk, I am not generally a member of the spelling police. I make enough spelling and typing mistakes of my own not to be. But I have to point out that she spelled her first name KathArine with an "a" and not an "e." Being one of the greatest film and stage stars of the 20th century, I feel compelled to correct this often-made mistake.

Again I say, I'm really looking forward to seeing THE AFRICAN QUEEN on Blu-ray, but until its price goes below $20, no sale. I am happy to hear it looks so good. I did see a blip of it in high definition in the HD-DVD version of ROAD TO BALI, so I'm eager to see the whole thing now in higher resolution.

I got a couple of Criterion Blu-rays today (VIVRE SA VIE and SUMMER HOURS), but I suspect I'll be getting their DVD counterparts as well, and I'll want to see them first, so I guess I'll put these aside and wait for the others to arrive. DR MattH (and DR RonP if he's watched) I'm curious re: the men's short program if you agree with the results.
I must say that even though the top Olympic finishers are not competing I was completely amazed at the skating for the top 6.  Really great.  I am especially curious how you guys would place #1,2,3 in the short program.  They were very close for me. But i preferred (and am biased) #2.

Greetings from Toyland!

I don't know how many DRs watch the Bravo "reality" programs, but tacky kept woman Kim Zolciak (on the left) of the REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA (wife? she's a mistress!), who can't carry a tonal pitch to save her life, turns out to be a lesbian. She's far too tacky and untalented to be a lesbian. I think it's an attempt to extend her 15 minutes of dubious fame.

However, she is following the example of Emile Zola's whorish heroine NANA.

Just wrote a long e-mail to the creative team of the long musical.  They are, of course, already in full panic mode and I told them there will be no panic allowed at any time during the rehearsal process.  Also, the co-author, despite my having told him time and again, continues to labor under the disillusion that I will be directing this brilliantly.  So, once again, I have informed everyone that a staged reading is not about the director's brilliance or lack thereof.  It's about hearing the book, music, and lyrics of the show.  The audience knows what a staged reading is - normally, it's the entire cast seated on chairs, rising for their scenes and crossing to a music stand, and then reading a scene or singing a song.  That's it.  This will be slightly more than that as the theater doesn't have twenty-six chairs, and that's too many people to put on this stage.  But I told them that the minute you introduce anything that's more than a suggestion of blocking, suddenly it starts to feel like something it shouldn't - a half-assed production.  The co-author wants some props and I'm allowing one at this point, for a food gag.

I'm not normally a fan of them having both teams go to tribal council. But it sort of worked last night. I'm glad they gave one person immunity on each team.  My fav boston rob is just unbelievable. I can't believe how he excels at every challenge they do.  I am torn on russell. I hateed him at the beginning of last season. But by mid-way thru i loved him. Yet so far this season i do not like him at all (maybe because he wants rob out). But last night he was beyond brilliant. I never liked tyson. BUt did not want him out last night. But OMG did he deserve to go. What an absolute idiot. He deserved exactly what he got. When russell got up to give his idol to parv. I had a feeling he knew that tyson was gonna switch his vote. It's not like russell to leave things to chance. But he actually did really put his game on the line.  I can't believe he did it. But i guess without parv in the game he would be gone next week anyone. But what a crazy move. But how dumb is tyson. Even if he thought russell was being honest with him, if he had just kept the votes the same then he (tyson) would not have gone home anyhow. Parv would have. Oy. So dumb!!!  I was totally stunned at the end. But even more stunned that tyson still thought he was a genius. :)

I have returned from a good morning out and about. I picked up my Sondheim birthday gift: I had Kinko's bind the full orchestra score of SWEENEY TODD that I was given on the 22nd, I faxed a vocal arrangement for "Evaline McCook" to the copyist, I picked yp the score for Montgomery & Stone that I need to edit, and I handed some WIZARD OF OZ edits to my friend Joseph.

I think I will unpack the things in my bag and get to work.

In the now notorious case of our evil neighbor whose assests were frozen and he was consequently forced to discharge his pricey attorney -  FJL posed:

I don't know what case you are talking about, but it sounds like it's civil. I don't think the state provides you a lawyer for a civil case.

Oh trust me, there will be civil case galore, but the case at hand is criminal:
our local pediatrician is charged with 471 counts of rape and exploitation involving 103 patients (some as young as 3 months), all of which he captured on 13 hours of video tape.

The crimes were committed over a more than a 10 year time span, and various authorities had allegations of misconduct for years – setting up all sorts of opportunities for civil cases against the hospital, medical associations, regulatory agencies, etc.

I suspect he will be found sane enough for trial and the defense will pursue a not guilty by reason of insanity defense. There seems an almost zero chance he will ever be free – the only bargaining chip the defense holds is a plea that will keep the victims from having to testify, and the video tapes shown, in exchange for “considerations” of his confinement options for life.

The real issue for the community is how do we prevent this sort of thing from happening again? (And should other entities be held responsible for not stopping him sooner?)

Ever Heard Of The Booty Buddy Blanket?

Ever since we were introduced to the blanket with sleeves (better-known-as the Snuggie), more and more variations have emerged (a la Slanket Siamese).

One of the latest on the market is the Booty Buddy Blanket from Urban Outfitters. Besides the funny name, it actually stands out from the counterparts. The blue southwestern-motif blanket measures in at 66" x 69" and retails for $68. Plus, it has a comfy fleece lining.

I have returned from a nice lunch at Hugo's - had something new - chilaquiles - very good.  Prior to that, for fun, I drove to Toluca Lake to look at last night's Adam 12 location.  It's exactly the same save for a little mom and pop market now being something else - the Radio Shack is still there, and the buildings, of course, are all the same.

I mentioned the other day that my Playstation 3 died after four years of very heavy use. I bought an inexpensive Sony player as a replacement, and it came today. Spent this morning before lunch installing it, downloading updated firmware. I haven't put the codes from the player into my universal remote yet. I'll work on that tonight.

When I got in I played the first fifteen minutes of TOY STORY 2, and everything is AOK. Glad to have this as a backup or I may switch off/alternate with the other Blu-ray player in the equipment stack so neither gets overused. I'll continue to play with it tonight.

When I got in and finished setting up the new Blu-ray player, I watched last night's UGLY BETTY. Most of it was a dream sequence episode with Betty as Bitch. Very entertaining and America as Betty looked quite beautiful all made up and dressed to the nines (and without the braces, of course).

Then I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Luke was on with (as I will now call him) Reid, decent acting for a change. Looks like the start of a beautiful friendship.

They were not in the previews for tomorrow. How STUPID of the show to introduce this new relationship and then not follow up immediately with an extension of these new personas to hook our interest even more.

Fish was briefly on ONE LIFE TO LIVE. I do not understand any of these characters any more since their thoughts and actions, all out of character, are conceived by the writers to keep a storyline hanging around and the characters looking like fools.

Then I started the next episode of THE CLOSER that I began revisiting last night. This was the one with the teen who on first appearance seemed to have hanged herself before Brenda starts digging deeper into the case. I only got halfway through the episode before it was time to come upstairs, so I'll finish it when I go back down. I should have time to watch a few more before I ease into FAST FORWARD about 12 minutes into the hour.

I can't wait any longer because I'll have to watch GREY'S ANATOMY "live" tonight due to having two OTHER shows recording at 9.

DR Jennifer, I found Takahashi and Chan's short programs yesterday in a separate place on the website so I watched them. I think Takahashi displays perhaps a bit more personality on the ice than Patrick does, but both of them skated beautifully and with the same levels of difficulty, and I could certainly make a case for either one to be in first. Of course, they're so close together score-wise that placement isn't all that important. Whoever wins the free program between them should win the gold, and I just hope Takahashi doesn't attempt the quad again (which he fell on badly at the Olympics.) Evan proved you don't need it to win; a clean skate filled with difficult triple jumps would likely insure his win since, once again, his free program (skated to Nina Rota's "La Strada") has so much more personality than Patrick's, all moves being equal.

The venerable Fairfax Theater, which opened its doors in 1930, will close indefinitely after suffering major damage during the recent rainstorms.

Regency Theaters, which operates the theater, said Wednesday that it has asked the property owner to terminate its lease.

The rain damage was so extensive that it would not be economically feasible to reopen the landmark theater at Beverly Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, Regency said in a statement.

In recent years, the theater has battled against competition from neighboring theaters and problems with area parking.

The property owner, Alex Gorby, has proposed a mixed-use retail and residential project for the site. The project would preserve the theater's historic Art Deco facade, according to the statement.

Oy. I really need a new pair of shoes. But i've been having a very hard time finding the style i want.

Anyhow I went into Payless. Normally i wear an 8 or 8 1/2. But depending on the shoe sometimes i can wear a 9. So i'm in the section with 8.5s and 9s. And i see this new brand of comfort fit.  But the 9 was too big. So i ask the salesclerk if he has it in 8 or 8 1/2. He looks and then says he doesn't. But then adds "do you want me to get it for you in 8 i have that."  :)

I hope your root canal procedure went as well for you, DR Ron, as mine went for me when I had my last one some years ago. In fact, it was so painless that I was able to go to FOREVER PLAID rehearsals the same night.

I continued watching THE CLOSER episodes when I went back down. Yes, I remembered that I had seen these episodes, but I hadn't watched these in quite some time, and I couldn't have enjoyed them any more. Terrific little mysteries with such wonderful acting. But apart from the story of the blonde bimbo (the marvelous Jennifer Coolidge) who wanted to have her husband killed, the plots were deeply, deadly serious.

The couple who had the psycho 13-year old from Russia as their adopted son was especially gruesome and creepy.

Next I watched tonight's FLASH FORWARD. It was a dull episode overall (a couple of very predictable events took place that, because they were so telegraphed, weren't very exciting). I suppose I'll stick with the show to the end of the season, but I doubt it'll get a second season.

A nice acting showcase for Kevin McKidd tonight on GREY'S ANATOMY, and Sara Gilbert had a very touching role as a terminal patient that left me in tears by the end of the hour.

I'm hoping the DVD counterparts of those two Blu-rays come in the mail tomorrow so I can start with the DVD version of the Godard film for my work project. If it doesn't come, I'll likely go ahead and work on the Blu-ray tomorrow. I don't want to start with it, but I hate sitting around doing nothing with discs sitting there waiting to be reviewed, even if they aren't coming out for almost a month.

Good Evening!

Well... After leaving DC right at 8:00am... And then making a stop in Philadelphia to drop-off and pick-up some passengers... My bus arrived in Chinatown at 1:15pm.  A little longer trip than I was expecting, but I did get a few hours of sleep on the ride up.

Once I got back to my apartment, I had some phone calls and errands to take care of.  Then I had a meeting to go over some music, followed by a walk in Riverside Park - I just really needed to stretch my legs and it was such a beautiful afternoon here in NYC.  Once I got down to the 79the Street Boat Basin, I just sat there for a while watching the sun set over New Jersey.  Pretty.

I wonder if men loved the episode more than women. I liked it but found the beginning parts slow for me. I loved the island stuff though.

I know some women who really loved the episode (too).  -Maybe it's a Canadian thing? ::)

LA's live-action porn-palace* bites the dust
LA TIMES (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/03/landmark-fairfax-theater-closes-indefinitely.html)

Quote
Fairfax Theater closes indefinitely

* It was raided by Vice for doing a production of "Oh, Calcutta!"

How sad it is now known as a porn theater.

Um... DR Jane - Not really.  -In fact, that's where I saw "Broadway: The Golden Age" during the run of What If?.  It was playing indie and foreign films.

I just read the results of the men's figure skating finals.

[spoiler]

No big surprises with the top three, pretty much as I had predicted. The best news was that due to the 5th and 6th place placements of the US's Jeremy Abbott and Adam Rippon (an alternate for the world team - finished 5th at our national championships), the USA will get to have three men's skaters at the worlds next year! That makes me REALLY happy, and I'm really thrilled for Adam who is truly a rising star in the US.

Now, if our two ladies can do equally as well in the next two days, we'll get to have three representatives on the ladies' side next year, too.

I finished Agatha Christie's "Three Blind Mice" last night. Yep, the murderer was exactly who idiot Manny Farber said it was in his think piece though, as usual with Dame Agatha, there were also other surprises in store which were delightful.

For dinner earlier tonight, I headed out to Sripraphai (http://www.sripraphairestaurant.com/) with my friend, Eric.  Sripraphai is known for its very authentic Thai cuisine and for the truly incendiary spice level of some of their dishes.  So...

As we were heading into the restaurant, a couple was trying to beat us to the door in order to get their names on the wait list before we did.  Well, we opened the door to the restaurant, while they opened the door to the adjoining apartment building. Strike One.

Of course, they ended up being seated next to us.  Well...

Then they placed their orders.  Not only did they want mushrooms added to both of their vegetarian entrees, they requested that everything be prepared "NOT SPICY".  Of course, the items they really wanted to try - the ones they pointed to - were not available "NOT SPICY".  However, the waitress was very patient and guided them to the milder selections on the menu. -Why bother coming to a restaurant known and famous for its "heat" and then order everything bland ("NOT SPICY") and blander ("with mushrooms")?!?!? Strike Two.

Well... Our appetizers and entrees came.  The entrees and appetizers for the table on the other side of us came.  Meanwhile, the "NOT SPICY" couple kept waiting for their entrees.  Of course, once they were placed on the table, it turned out that the kitchen had left out the "with mushrooms".  So they sent them back to the kitchen to get "with mushrooms". Strike Three.

Then it came time to pay the check.  The guy placed his fancy-schmancy Visa card on the menu tray just as the waitress was coming back to their table.. "Oh, sorry, cash only" -As she pointed to "Cash Only" on the bill... As well as the large signs on the front door, above the cash register and on each page of the menu. Strike Four.

;)

*When his girlfriend asked her boyfriend how he found this place, he replied, "Well, I'm a foodie."  Hmmm...

**And I guess you had to be there.  But I really wanted just to smack both of them.

And then there was the couple that came in just as we were leaving.

She was quite talkative, and, apparently quite knowledgeable about Thai food.  And I quote...

"I would normally order something with red curry, but since I found the real stuff at the grocery store and can make it at home just as good as it is here, I don't need to order it here anymore."

"For dessert, I really want to try that cassava root cake."
-It took me - and the waitress - a while to figure out what she was trying order since she kept pronouncing all the a's in "cassava" as the "a" in "cat" - "ca-sa-va".

"We'd like everything extra spicy, Thai hot. We can both handle all those spices really well.  Just like in your homeland." -I believe both the waitress and myself rolled our eyes at that one.
