Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both sleep and sheep, and now it is time for you to post until the sheepish cows come home.

There's Mel, There's Woody, and There's You
My Life in the Slow Lane

Bruce Kimmel has managed to eke out a career in one form of show business or another for over forty years. A successful Grammy-nominated record producer, Kimmel began his show business journey as an actor, in a time when being a young up-and-coming thespian was fun, thrilling, and when anything seemed possible. It was a different world for a young actor in the 1970s, and Kimmel’s journey is paved with laughs, tears, success, and an amazing cast of players. At twenty-seven, he wrote, co-directed, and starred in a film that would become a major cult success, The First Nudie Musical. He did TV pilots, guest shots, series, plays. He met and worked with incredible people. It was the kind of time we will never see again.

And then things changed. The nature of the business changed. And the path to dealing with those changes—getting older, trying to survive in an ever increasingly negative and cutthroat world—becomes a story of reinvention and rebirth. Through it all, Kimmel tells his tale with wit, candor, affection, and self-effacing honesty.

Enjoy being the fly on the wall as Kimmel hangs out with Elsa Lanchester, Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy; goes to Groucho’s house and plays the piano for him; works with Shirley Jones, David Cassidy, Susan Dey on The Partridge Family. We observe his long friendship with Cindy Williams, watch as he works with screen legends Patricia Neal, Jean Simmons, Leslie Nielsen, Patrick Macnee, Bud Cort, and Geraldine Fitzgerald, and as he hangs out with Hugh Hefner at the Playboy mansion.

Bruce Kimmel’s showbiz tales are loaded with laughs, wide-eyed wonder, and heart.

Bruce Kimmel has written nine other books—his acclaimed Kritzer trilogy (Benjamin Kritzer, Kritzerland, and Kritzer Time), Writer’s Block, Rewind, How To Write A Dirty Book and Other Stories, and his popular Adriana Hofstetter mystery series, Murder At Hollywood High, Murder At The Grove, and Murder At The Hollywood Historical Society. He has done many other things, the majority of which you can read about in this book.

DR EVIL KURT (who is now car-less) and I enjoyed hanging out with DR CP and MR BK muchly on Friday night, and it's very nice being mentioned in THE NOTES once again!

A book signing in Indianapolis would be most exciting and interesting and it is something to look forward to.

And now - I am going back to bed.

As for TOD:

The home made chili that my mom makes is good.  I don't order chili out very much.....so I will have to stick with that.

Congratulations to MR BK on his book - and send him best selling vibes for There's Mel There's Woody and There's You!

Monday morning greetings!  I had a better night' sleep than I usually have my first (in this case, only) night in a hotel and am enjoying coffee and The Today Show.  Later this morning, I'll find someplace for brunch and proceed to Columbus Metropolitan Library for a seminar on fundraising planning.

No back pain here, but my doctor has put me on massive doses of vitamin D to address the hip and leg pain I've had for several months.

Last night DR Elmore asked:

"The Halloween one is creepy. I liked it. Was the Blair witch parody in Season Two?"

I believe so, yes. The one where the kid was found in the woods with witch fetish symbols all around? That was a very creepy episode and I remember being very surprised by the murderer's identity in that episode.

Right now, my plans are to watch and review 'M' on Blu-ray this afternoon. Any arrivals from Fox or elsewhere could change the plans since 'M' doesn't come out until May 11th.

And if my back isn't noticeably better, I may postpone 'M' as well and just take it easy today.

Good morning, all! The neighbor was particularly noisy and the dog particularly frisky last night so I slept late this morning. It all began around 10 or so with the loud arrival of company (I think) that put the dog into hyperactivity, with much loud scolding, chatter, and a lot of thumping around the ceiling from the dog and company. Around 1:30 or 2, I woke up unable to breath from the gunk in my sinuses, so I had to get up to blow my nose, have some water, and I foolishly removed the ear plugs because I hate them. Shortly thereafter, the neighbor returned home (Noisily), clomped about the apartment in what I swear are cleats weighing a ton each. I want him dead.

I am off to do laundry. Later, lunch with my friend Daniel.

Re: TOD.  First of all, any chili MUST NEVER HAVE BEANS!

I love my Cincinnati Chili. And I am very happy that I have a Gold Star close at hand near where I live.  I can also buy various varieties of Cincinnati chili in cans at the grocery.  What the unintiated really don't understand about Cincy chili is that it must sit atop something...a hot dog or spaghetti...and then must be topped with something...defintiely heaping mounds of shredded cheese...and, for me, onions.  If you eat Cincy chili undressed by itself in a bowl, you are likely to be disappointed, even though it will retain its excellent, unusual taste.  It is a Greek recipe.

I also like Texas chili, thick and meaty where the fork can stand up in the bowl.  There was a place in Dallas, Texas where I ate after a show once that had the best chili ever.  I do not remember its name and I suspect it no longer exist.

My wife actually makes an excellent turkey chili that requires Corona beer in it.  I love it when she makes a big pot of it along with corn bread and it lasts for days, so I can dole it out whenever I want.

And DR Ginny makes very good chili! So did my mother, when she was functioning.

I've been to pharmacy, laundromat, and now it's time to mop the floors. After that, OZ edits. My trip to the pharmacy was for paper towels. I got toothpaste, light bulbs, first aid supplies, vitamins and forgot the towels. Damn!

DR MattH, I know this may sound weird but have you tried walking with your sore back? Or does it make it worse?

For some reason my lower back always feels better when i walk or bike (yet hurts when i sit or lie down).  I have no idea if this is totally abnormal, cause i also thought i would not be able to exercise with a sore back. But i just tried it and it felt amazing.

I'd say my first favorite is nicole and derek. And my second favorite is evan and anna. Even though i've never liked her she's growing on me and i find she works very well with him, so i'm liking them as a team even though i didn't think i would.

DR Jeanne will the homeopathic arnica really help?  It's a recurring lower back thing. I have a health food store like 5 minutes away.

Also DR Jane, i do have a heating pad although not one you can soak with water. I wonder if i should use it more. I feel like there is a spot on my left lower back that is constantly inflammed.

Hmmm...I wonder how many HHWers have ever seen this 1969 made in Florida version of THE WIZARD OF OZ.

The films producer/director claimed that he was negotiating with Judy Garland to do the n'arration. I wonder how many milliseconds it took her agent to say "No!" Hee, hee!

The actress playing Mombi seems to be channeling Dorothy Neumann as the witch in Roger Corman's The Undead.

DR ELMORE - I have never received such booty in the mail....please thank Mr Hercules.  I shall now watch the DVD again, and hopefully he received some of the money I spent on it.

Mr Hercules says the singers were paid for the performance and received nothing for the taping because Spoleto and the producers said they had no money. He thinks the video was good exposure - literally - and great publicity so he isn't at all bitter.

Ice reduces inflammation.   10 minutes at a time is usually enough.  I prefer heat for relief but sometimes you need ice.

I walked yesterday morning when it was just a little stiff, and by the afternoon I was in horrific pain. However, I do not take to my bed when my back seizes up like this. I have too much to do to lie in bed and moan about it. I get around as best I can.

The hot shower this morning did ease the stiffness and pain some, and the heating pad this afternoon also helped. It's always something that has to run its course with me. It'll take three or four days, and I'll be back to normal. Getting there, however, is a painful trip.

When I got in from lunch, I watched 'M' on Blu-ray. Very pleased with the amount of depth and detail in this 1931 film. Sure, there are still scratches and some scenes that seem much softer than the rest. But overall, I was very impressed with the Blu-ray edition. The film has always deeply affected me and it still does even though I hadn't watched it in years.

I watched three Blu-ray discs yesterday afternoon and evening.

First up was "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince".  I watched it once at some point during the end-of-year holidays, but I couldn't recall much about it.  This remained true as the film played on...although it all came back to me as it unfolded.  So, it was almost like watching it for the first time.  Overall, the film was very dark...literally and figuratively.  It took us here, it led us there, and it left me hanging.  Hope the next one makes up for it.

Next up was "Twilight".  I love vampire stories, and this one has a huge following.  The leads are likable, but I find Robert Pattinson's makeup too distractingly "prettified" to not dwell upon at the expense of whatever angst is being expressed in the screenplay.  He had an awful lot of artifiice to act through.  I found myself much relieved when "Edward" left Forks.   Teen angst ain't my thing.  It wasn't when I was a teenager, and it sure isn't now.

Then came "New Moon".  Yes, it's a better film.  Taylor Lautner's Jakob is quite the character.  I thought there might have been a little bit more there....but it all ended with the..."I love you too much to subject you to this hideous thing that is part of me".  Gimme a break!   I think Bella belongs with Jake.  Yes, I do.  Edward's way too effete for the likes of Bella.  For the Italian sequence, at least we got in some of the local scenery.

Then it was bedtime.  I dreamed of nothing occult, cold or hairy.   I was much relieved.

TOD: I love many styles of chili from Texas to Cincinnati (don't share that with my Texas brothers; I may get kicked out of the state). The one thing I learned after moving to Texas is that beans have no place in great chili. I think that's something peculiar to this state, but your chili will get kicked out of many competitions if a pinto or kidney bean goes near it.

As far as I'm concerned, the hotter the bowl of red, the better. I love a Skyline four ways (chili, spaghetti, cheese and onions) drowned in hot sauce to balance the touch of cinnamon and chocolate in the Greek-style chili.

Here in Texas, I've had chili made with venison, antelope and assorted mystery meats, but the ground beef remains my favorite. It seems a perfect vehicle for conveying the spices.

I also thought NEW MOON was much better than TWILIGHT (the movies). My 20something librarian had a different view point (since she had not read the books). But she did not care much for TWILIGHT but loved NEW MOON.

I'm guessing you hadn't read the books.

Not sure if this would make a difference as to whether a person is team edward vs team jacob but i suspect it might. I loved taylor lautner in the movie as jacob. I think he is much more suited to his role than robert pattinson is (IMO).

I forgot to mention, for you lower back sufferers, I have found sleeping with two pillows greatly reduced my chronic lower back pain. I angle the pillows on a slant, not one on top of the other.

I have been putting one pillow on a slant behind the other and i found it helped. I've also put a pillow under my knees and that seemed to help too.

I think my problem is different than DRs MattH and TCB. I am not in enormous pain. And it does not hurt at all when i walk or exercise. But it sometimes really hurts when i sit or lie down and i always feel it in those positions. But it hasn't gone away in a few days (like DR MattH said his probably would). I will try the ice and the heat.

Hi all!  Just popping in real quick.  I've been on the phone with Home Again getting Toby signed up.  Turns out he is paid for a year, Sheena needed updating.

The guy said he would email my password to me but I haven't see it yet so I'm going to call back.

I hope everyone is having a nice evening!

Toby is turning out to be a real joy.  He is sooo cute!!!  And Sheena just seems to love him.   I think she is loving the idea of not being alone all day anymore.

Hello to all you HHW folk. I know I have somewhat dropped from the fold these days but I hope you won't object to a quick hello. For those of you not on Facebook, Toby, Jed, and I are all doing splendidly. Toby is 19 months old and loves to sing, dance, and play the piano. He keeps me busy but very happy. Jed is still at the library and doing as well as usual.

I hope all of you people are well! I am happy to be able to see updates from many of you on Facebook, although Jose's posts usually just make me hungry.

Laura, I must tell you a story about the dinosaur you sent Toby when he was first born.  He still loves it, and just recently began to figure out what noise went with it.  It often stands on the floor of the playroom downstairs, and each time he sees it he goes over, crouches down so that he is nose to nose with it, and roars the most ferocious roar that a 19 month old can produce.  Then he walks away, confident that he has again shown it who is boss.

I like both Cincy and Texas chili... It was wonderful... I may have to request some of the canned Gold star stuff through the grocery store here. I did buy  some seasonings at the airport.

I'm very glad as well.   I just knew that Sheena really seemed to like the Boxers at the dog park more then any other breed.

I didn't really want a pure bred because of all the medical problems I've heard about and that they don't live very long.

I'm very happy with a mix as long as there is no Pit.

TOD - I'm a Skyline 4-way bean (spaghetti, chili, beans, cheese) kind of gal, but really prefer my homemade chili.  It's very tomatoey and a double recipe is just right for the crockpot.

I am loving Season Three of BONES! It's a realy styrong season. I just watched the one about Bones' father's trial for murder. Am finishing up the first season of "1st Ladies Detective Agency." Jill Scott makes a great Mma Ramotswe, but it's Anika Noni Rose that steals the show.

I read the book first and loved it  so much I almost didn't watch th4 series for fear of it being ruined - but I thought it was beautifully cast and performed

"Not the Daddy!"

I was able to get into Home Again by googleing it.  I didn't get far since I can't remember the chip number. ::)
Opps.  And sign on and password.  I couldn't remember any of them but I wrote them down now.

I found it saved on the computer.  Home Again shows "this pet is enrolled in a limited service".  I have no idea what that means, will have to explore it farther.

How did you check Sheena's info is up to date?

Well, a man after my own taste buds. I don't care for either of them, either, but at least I'm living in LA, where I can get almost any sort of food.

There used to be an eatery in Old Town, Alexandria, VA that specialized in chili. You could order it on top of spaghetti, which seemed quite strange to me at the time. Hard Times Cafe! Yes, that was it. Jose probably knows it.

DR Ginny - So, when you caption that pic, do you also list the person's name in addition to the pattern/design? ;)

Why, of course, DR Jose!  One of the others did this on our Facebook discussion thread:

Cathy (Sittin' in a Tree Angle Tote)
Megan (Raspberry Fizz Backsack)
Stacy (Bali Blue Hipster)
Benita (Very Berry Paisley Betsy)
Bailey (Bali Blue Wristlet)
Ginny (Slate Blooms On the Go)
Patty (Cupcakes Green Reversible Tote)
Angela (Cupcakes Pink Hipster)
Tracy (Sittin' in a Tree Emma)

I've removed the last names and her editorial comments, to protect the innocent.

Neat purses...

Rest easy - it only lasts until May 11.

Glad BK returned home prior to the retrograde.

I am joining in with the pain  issues tonight - although I brought mine on myself - I was wearing an old pair of shoes today - since I lost all that weight my shoe size actually is now 1/2 size smaller - so these shoes are a little too big - I was also wearing very thin socks  so the shoes were quite  loose - I was rushing around the office and fell out of one of my shoes, which I immediately tripped over and then fell flat on my face in the middle of the office - fortunately I was wearing trousers and there were no clients present - but it was immensely undignified and now I am very achy  and I have a huge bruise on one hip

Well for the $16.99/year your dog has a $3000.00 heath insurance policy (only if they are lost and hurt), the Home Again people will send posters to every vet they have listed within a 25 mile radius, if your pet is found 500 miles or more they will pay $500.00 to get them home and there is more but you get the idea.  I thought it was a good deal for the peace of mind.

Just saw your post as I was clicking off--I was on the phone with the guy because I couldn't sign into the service.  He told me about the extras and I thought it sounded like a good plan--mostly the part about sending the photos/flyers to every vet/pound/group within 25 miles.

Thanks for the tips re: sore backs.

Jennifer, I have had success with both Arnica and Triflora gel, although I think the pellets (tiny pills) are more effective. Because your pain and stiffness is better with movement (ie, riding your bike), RHUS TOX may be a good choice. It's known as the rusty gate remedy.

In Chinese medicine, it would be said that you are suffering from stagnant chi, ie, stagnant energy. The Chinese are big believers in movement, especially gentle exercise, such as Tai Chi. Tai Chi might actually be a good choice for you. Yoga or Western-style back stretches, such as pelvic tilts, might also help.

I highly recommend Bob Anderson's book, which is simply titled, STRETCHING. It's a classic that many of us, including some top personal trainers, have used for a great many years. It's easy to understand and is hard to beat.

I say that because icing really helps a bruise.  I also hate icing.  I had to practically live with ice packs for my shoulder.  It doesn't have to be real cold.  A soft re-freezable pack is more comfortable & a dishtowel wrapped around it helps, or put it over your clothing.

I don't have an iPad. I was just giving one a spin in the Apple Store.

...And after about 15 minutes, I could already tell that I really don't need nor want one right now.  For me, it really is just like a larger iPhone/iTouch.  It would basically just be an expensive piece of electronic equipment that I'd be afraid of damaging out in public.  It really is quite a "Toy", but I just don't the use for one now.

Ginny I really really hate having ice on me - I find the sensationof the ice more intolerable than the muscle pain - I only ice when there is the likely hood of swelling  - like banging my forehead on something

fortunaltey today i did manage to get my hands down and protect my face from hitting the ground otherwsie I probably would have damaged my glasses too- but I did do a full body prat fall

it was probably very funny to watch  - too bad we don't have survelliance cameras - I could have been the Next Big Thing on YouTube

Look at all the lost souls this evening. Welcome back, everyone!

I am loving Season Three of BONES! It's a realy styrong season. I just watched the one about Bones' father's trial for murder. I had no idea Ryan O'Neal would be found innocent; it was a wonderful episode, and so was the one before it, about the baby Andy and the depressed areas of West virginia. On to the next one, I guess.

Tell me this, DR ELmore. Did you jump in the episode where the man goes into his closet only to be attacked by Gormogon's apprentice? If you've gotten to the trial episode, it was before that. (I think it's the first episode on disc three.) That's the next one I have to watch, and it just scares the bejeezus out of me every time I watch it even though I know that moment is coming.

When I went downstairs, I finished all of the bonus features on 'M.' There were about 90 minutes of bonus features (not counting the 93-minute English language version of the movie which I didn't spend time watching all the way through, just enough to ascertain the picture and sound quality, both very poor).

I really enjoyed a comparison discussion of all of the various ways the film has been presented down through the years in theaters and on home video. Quite fascinating and most informative.

Young Frankenstein
Hair
Shrek The Musical
9 to 5: The Musical
Fiddler On The Roof
Billy Elliot The Musical
Mamma Mia!

That sounds like a group of shows i would like to see.

Still waiting to find out what our next Broadway season is.

We're getting all of those except FIDDLER and MAMMA MIA. NEXT TO NORMAL is in our list and MARY POPPINS in those other two places.

When I finished it, I watched another BONES episode, the one where the time capsule was taken from the ground and the body of a student from 1987 was inside. Good episode. I remembered who the killer was, but I remember when the episode first aired, I guessed the wrong person.

Then I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing of interest and nothing in the previews for tomorrow either. Sheesh!

And I ended my evening with tonight's exciting episode of '24.' Kiefer Sutherland and Cherry Jones had a fantastic face-off scene together that was terrific with all of the emotions flying around in the room. One of the best moments in the season.

No UPS deliveries today, so I'll have the day off tomorrow unless CRAZY HEART or some other disc arrives.

I am firmly convinced that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world"

...25 translations later we get:

"I think I will save the world and to relax in the dark"

You're very welcome, DR DakotaCelt!  I enjoyed showing off Cincinnati and introducing you to Montgomery Inn (and re-introducing you to Graeter's  ;)).  Did you find something more fun to do Saturday than sit around the airport?

Yes... I rearranged the shuttle time to a bit later... stashed my stuff and me and two other gals walked to Graeters at the square...

Yes,.... I could not have Graeters Just ONCE... NO, No, NO... I had to have it three times... But darn it was good!

Look at all the baby pictures and dog pictures and pictures of MR BK....whew!

What a site.

Thanks to all who commented on the MR BK pic - hopefully it will turn up in print in the next couple of days....although it shows up on the INDY STAR website......they haven't contacted me for details either by email or phone, so I am not optimistic right now....although now I am thinking of that Shirley Temple song.

I noticed that I had THE DESERT SONG on the DVR recorded last night from TCM-HD and I'll have CASTLE, DAMAGES, and NURSE JACKIE from tonight, so I have lots to watch tomorrow if I don't have any work to do.

Yes, the end of the episde is as good as any horror film. I jump, too!

What a great disc this last one has been! We had the baby episode, the trial of Bones' father,  the wannabe singer played by Ace Young, who's currently in HAIR (the cliffhanger for the writer's strike) and the discovery of the Gormagon's apprentice, which was a heartbreaking episode; I cried like a baby. Everyone is so good in it, especially Tamara Taylor; her scene with Hodgins when she thinks he's the killer is really taut, and the scene after Bones and Booth ask her to leave Zak is really touching. The balance of grisly corpses, crime story, romance, and often outrageous humor, performed by a good ensemble ensemble, is just amazing.

And the drive back from Fairfax was very uneventful. Although, getting back onto 95 off of the Fairfax County Parkway was quite interesting due to a whole series of detours.  Round and round and round and round. The whole process actually made me laugh once I finally got on the highway.

bk - Did you have your MoonPie (http://www.moonpie.com/) with an RC Cola?  That's the classic combination.

*And if you happen to find yourself in Charleston, SC, you can head to the MoonPie General Store (http://www.moonpie.com/index.php?id=88).  It opened a few weeks after I finished my gig down there last year.  MoonPie is also on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/moonpie)

I am up late, but by the looks of it, Jose is up late/early.

I have pumped out five very lengthy reviews of less than wonderful product in two days, so I believe I will take tomorrow off, review wise.  Tomorrow is also the first performance of my senior choir without being under the aegis of the senior center.  I am still completely stunned by this center's absolute stupidity.  Including, most stupidly of all, putting it all in writing in emails and then asking me to lie about it.

Back from Irma La Douce - won't say much in the notes, but I wished it had been better.  The highlight of the evening was that Clive Revill, the show's original star, was in attendance (he's a friend of Barry Pearl - they did Oliver together).  Well, the real highlight of the evening was my winning prize at the silent auction - a basket containing three large containers of Jane Lanier's spectacular homemade caramels.  Oh, boy!

As if I don't have enough to waste my time on:

http://www.conveythis.com/translation.php

Original text:
"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, do ordain and establish this constitution."

...54 translations later we get:
"Konstitutyonal development and use of user the United States."

:D

Original text: "The flowers are very pretty today."
54 translations later we get: "Children."

Interesting...I tried your quote "The flowers are very pretty today" but without the period and 54 translations later, the final was "No".

Weird, huh? ;)

A friend of mine told me the story of a time that he went to a barbecue picnic/get-together and the host was smoking a cigar while making a big vat of chili.  My friend also noticed that the host/chili cooker was covertly flicking the his cigar ashes INTO THE CHILI!  My friend was shocked to say the least!  He quietly asked the host what he was doing and the guy said that that was his secret ingredient!  My friend said that that was the best chili that he had ever had.
