Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no title and were unseemly to boot, and now it is time for you to post until the unseemly cows come home.

“TWO MEN AND A DAME”
Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere limited edition CD release:
LEGEND OF THE LOST
Music Composed by Angelo Francisco Lavagnino
Legend Of The Lost was produced by John Wayne’s Batjac Productions, and starred the Duke and Rosanno Brazzi as the two men. The dame was Sophia Loren, and the fourth character was the Sahara desert. It’s an odd film, both intimate (basically a three-character drama) and epic (the Sahara) – a tale of treasure, lust, and sand, not necessarily in that order. Wayne plays a guide in hock up to his ears to the police captain in Timbuktu, Loren plays a woman who has been known to pick pockets and pick up men, and Brazzi plays a man in search of his long-lost father, who, in search of a Lost City has presumably perished in the desert. Oh, and the treasure – there’s always the treasure – that the long-lost father was in search of. It’s actually a very entertaining film, with Duke his usual heroic self, Loren looking luscious whether traipsing in the sand or bathing by moonlight, and Brazzi feeling tortured and tormented. Henry Hathaway, with whom Wayne did many films, directed, and the film was gorgeously photographed by the brilliant Jack Cardiff in Technirama and Technicolor.
The score was by Italy’s Angelo Francesco Lavagnino. Lavagnino was one of Italy’s finest film composers and certainly one of its most prolific, beginning his career in 1948. His voice was unique – one could always tell a Lavagnino score immediately. His music is exotic and melodic and unique. Some of his best work included the films The Naked Maja, The Last Days of Pompeii, The Colossus of Rhodes, Esther and the King, Imperial Venus, Orson Welles’ Chimes at Midnight, and tons of sword-and-sandal films, Italian sci-fi, and spaghetti westerns. Standing tall among his scores is Legend Of The Lost. His music for the film is dreamy, mysterious, romantic, and captures the moods of the nights and days of the desert almost like a tone poem. You can feel the heat beating down in the music, feel the shifting of the sands, feel the passion of two men in love with the same woman – Lavagnino’s melodies are sinuous and sensual.
The tapes for Legend Of The Lost are long lost but thankfully about thirty-two of the film’s forty minutes of music was found in Italy and it is those thirty-two minutes we present here. Even though we’d love to say it’s the complete score, we figured thirty-two minutes is better than no minutes, especially of primo Lavagnino. Missing were the film’s main title, which we’ve taken from the DVD, and even though we had the film’s final cue in its entirety it was missing the choral overlay, so we’ve included a bit of that, also from the DVD. Sound is in clean, crisp mono.
This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98 plus shipping.
CD will ship by the first week of June – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Morning all.
That is all.
-
I love LEGEND OF THE LOST.
We saw it at the drive in many many years ago.....and I just remember thinking that I couldn't understand a word that either Sophia OR Rosanno said - so I didn't know what the movie was about.
-
TOD:
CD - Little Shop of Horrors - I love the notes and the picture on the back of Jonathan Haze....one of my favorite actors!
DVD - Blithe Spirit the 1956 Television Production
-
It is remarkable to me also that it has been A WEEK since MR BK and DR CP were here to see BRAINEX....time flies.
-
Allergies seem to be in high gear already this morning.
-
Good morning!
It drizzled here last night and again this morning. We haven't had a good downpour this entire month, so we're overdue, but this looks to be not promising in terms of a lot of moisture.
-
My back is about 90% healed this morning. I was able to clean the den with a minimum of discomfort. I'm hoping that if I'm careful today, I can get back to normal tomorrow with my morning walk (if weather permits) and a light workout.
-
I am writing this on my lousy, slow laptop computer downstairs while I wait for the UPS man to arrive. I can't afford to miss the delivery of AVATAR another day. I skipped over bk's comments in the notes this morning until I had seen it for myself. I'll go back tonight and read them after I've seen the film and written up my review.
-
Back vibes for DR MATTH.
-
And now I am off to work....oh well.
-
Will there really be a Friday?
-
And the next big purchase for me will likely be a new laptop for downstairs. This one is VERY old by computer standards (bought in 1999), and the wireless is so slow that it makes doing anything on the net that involves graphics almost pointless.
NC has a tax free weekend the first weekend of August, so that's likely when I'll buy. I guess I can live with this one until then.
Earlier this week when my back was killing me, it would have been SO nice to have a downstairs computer that was reliable and as fast and accurate as my office computer so I wouldn't have had that excruciating crawl upstairs to get to that computer.
-
Back vibes for DR MATTH.
Thanks. I feel like I'm in the home stretch with this bout of stiffness in my back.
I hope all others who have been having back problems this week will also find relief very quickly.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm back in NYC. :-)
-
TOD:
I will probably rent one or more of the following:
CRAZY HEART
YOUNG VICTORIA
PIRATE RADIO
-
Obviously, I'll be working on AVATAR this afternoon.
Since all my TV shows are in reruns tonight (and I'll remember to record GLEE so I can see the last number in widescreen and HD though I'll rewatch the entire episode because I enjoyed it so much), I have decided what I'l be watching tonight.
I read somewhere that Fox is going to release BARTON FINK on Blu-ray at some point this year. I saw the movie at the theater and have seen it on paycable a few times. I have had the DVD version on my to-watch shelf for years and years and have never cracked it open, so I'm going to watch that tonight. It's such a weird, quirky, surreal little film, I'm looking forward to seeing it again though, of course, it doesn't rank among my favorite Coen Brothers' movies.

Friday Media Check:

Yesterday turned out to be not only a travel for me, but also a "so that's what that setting means on my computer" day. -Speaking of new laptops... I guess somewhere in the process of migrating my data from my old to new laptop, I must have checked a box that did "something". Well, I know I did. So, I wasn't able to fully get onto the interwebs yesterday, and I wasn't able to send out any emails. I can receive, but not send/respond. However, I know what the problem is now, and I just have reset a setting and then re-migrate some of my files and data. I should be back up and running normally - a.k.a. not via iPhone - in a few hours.
Until then...
-
I hope everyone had a good Thursday.

I don't, DR Arnold. I haven't read anything about an upcoming release. The studio must not have gotten much interest in it from surveys and fan requests because I never see it talked about like other series that were on during those same years.

Can you believe it? The UPS truck drove right by my door without stopping! I would be my luck for the package to be pushed back somewhere on the truck and the driver not even notice that it's there. Argh!
-
Does this take us to page two?
-
It does! Page Two Dance!!
-
Of course, I have my usual Friday errands to run, but I don't dare leave the house for fear I'd miss any UPS deliveries. I HATE being in this position!

A watched UPS truck never delivers, MattH. ;)

A watched UPS truck never delivers, MattH. ;)
And I just went to the UPS site to make sure the driver didn't indicate that he had tried to make a second delivery attempt. It says "out for delivery," so I'll take that for what it's worth for the time being.
-
Most of my screeners come USPS. Occasionally I get UPS or FedEx deliveries, but not that often.
-
Betsy performed last evening with a comic up from L.A., who told her her set was perfect for tv! The guy couldn't reveal details, but he is on this summer's iteration of LAST COMIC STANDING, one of our favorite reality shows.
-
Well, that's just great! The UPS driver did come by and dropped off the package. Didn't ring the bell; didn't ask for a signature, just dropped it at the door and left.
WTH!!!Why couldn't he have done this yesterday?
-
Good morning, all! Last night, my neighbor left around 10pm and didn't return until about 40 minutes ago. The dog barked from 10:30 to around 11:15 and then became quiet. I slept very soundly all night until around 9:45 this morning, about 10 hours. I clearly needed it.
Today, I have to hit the NYPL, run a few errands, and accomplish the rest of the Oz Act Two edits. Tonight, my friend Chris and I are seeing THE KID, based on Dan Savage's book, on Theatre Row. The score is by Andy Monroe, who wrote the score to THE TRAGIC & HORRIBLE LIFE OF THE SINGING NUN, the show for which Chris who played the drums.

Criterion is the only one which uses the USPS on occasion (usually when they're sending single discs rather than a stack of releases.) The others that are my responsibility never use the USPS.

Well - that was interesting. About an hour ago, we heard a loud KA-BLOOEY!!! from outside and our power went off. We're back now and very thankful that it didn't drag on for days and days. Must have been a blown transformer that was easy to fix.

Even with rubber grips on the handles? Maybe I like them because I have small hands & they are lighter weight than regular pliers.

This morning I listened to an ootlegbay of Encores' ANYONE CAN WHISTLE. Donna Murphy and Sutton Foster are both absolutely terrific and the show is lively and fun when they are on. But whenever Raul Esparza enters, things begin to wilt and die a slow death. I swear, the guy just sucks the life out of anything he touches...

Evidently, the release of THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW on DVD has been pushed back until July. EVENING PRIMROSE is also delayed a month...

Well... I've restored a good number of my "User Permissions" and "User Settings"... -Which were, until yesterday morning, things I hadn't and didn't have to deal with on my Mac(s). DR Matt H I'm pleased your back is improving & that you don't have to spend the day watching for the UPS truck.
Thanks for that. It is a relief that my back is almost back to normal. At my age, when things start to go wrong, there's always that worry that THIS time, it won't be an easy road back to health, so each new ache or pain gives me pause.
I was actually getting worried about the UPS delivery because the note of delivery yesterday said the redelivery would happen before 10:30, and it was after 10:30 when he got here (but only by about ten minutes).

Got my Friday errands run early, got back home and immediately started cooking lunch (about 45 minutes earlier than usual). I knew AVATAR was very long, so I wanted to get lunch prepared and eaten as early as possible so I'd have plenty of time to watch the movie (and fit in bathroom breaks as needed).
-
I watched THE MENTALIST while I ate lunch. Now, there aren't many fans of this show bigger than I am, but even I got a bit outdone with Patrick this week. Yes, things turned out all right in the long run, but he really should think about a little self-discipline, if not for himself, then to keep his team from getting in trouble or even possibly killed.
Nice to see Stephen Spinella in a guest star role this week.
-
Then I watched AVATAR. Breathtaking new world and heaps and heaps of imagination in creating it. The main story, of course, we've seen in so many other books and films: corporate America/greed/industrialists moving into an area and taking over for exploitation no matter what environmental treasures and traditions are upset. That I found a little trite actually and the evil characters so one dimensional.
It's beautiful and engrossing and even moving in places but the core story seemed a little stale and pretty predictable, too.

I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. I knew Luke and Reid weren't going to be on, but they were featured in the previews for next week, so maybe they'll be on more than one of the five broadcasts next week.

Then I watched last night's THE OFFICE. There were a few good laughs though I never find making fun of someone, no matter how idiotic they are, very funny.

I also agree with your note about the inconvenience of having to upgrade the firmware on your Blu-Ray player. [I also have a Blu-Ray Samsung.]
It's one of major the reasons that I still choose DVD over Blu-Ray when buying or renting titles.

I also called the neighbor below me to inquire how much of a nuisance I am and she said that, outside of a few Sunday mornings with my CD player being too loud, she had no complaints for my apartment.

Just the two suspects, DR ELMORE?
-
Back from a somewhat more fruitful afternoon with my mother and her errands. We did get her other 2 prescriptions, plus a LOT of groceries. We did not, however, get her nondriver state ID, because they would not accept either of the 2 pieces of mail she'd taken along today. Part of that was her fault for not wanting to take a bank statement or a credit card statement, 2 of the items specifically mentioned yesterday as acceptable. I about lost it, though, when the clerk suggested "proof of vehicle ownership" as one of the qualifying items - for a NONDRIVER ID??? And the facility has a big poster encouraging parents to get this type of ID for their children. How many kids do you think have bank statements, credit card statements, voter registration cards, etc?

DR Ginny I'm sorry about your frustrating day, however your mother really should know by now if the DMV requests particular documents you had better have them. :) I'm sure she just didn't feel all that great after yesterday.
-
DR elmore I'm glad your downstairs neighbor doesn't have any complaints. It not only demonstrates you are a considerate upstairs neighbor, but that normal movement does not create excessive noise.
-
Hey, DR Elmore, we just sent Rob to pick up pizza from Shaddock's - how soon can you be here?
Alas, not soon enough!

Please send DS Craig some major interview vibes. He has an important job interview on Monday afternoon. After he nails the interview I pray he doesn't, once again, lose a coveted position due to someone with more experience.

What thoughts?

Callie has been acting really strange lately, hiding, cringing when I go to pick her up for meds etc. I was concerned she might be getting sick again, but i think she's just upset that i've been going out in the evenings and not coming home for lunch. Today I came home for lunch, brushed her and played with both cats. This afternoon I came home a little early and she's been sitting near me (she's not a lap cat) and purring for nearly an hour. I think she's fine. Of course I have to go somewhere at 6:00 PM, so we'll see how she is when I come home tonight

I'm getting a little irritated at HWHC. Both last night and tonight he asked me to meet him to go over a project I'm taking over for him on a board we're on. I know the subject matter, but don't know how much has been done, who the report I'm going to do is intended for ...basic things. Anyway, both nights he's cancelled at the last minute. Very good reasons both times, but it's still irritating. I have to report to the board on Wednesday on my progress and I can't progress if he doesn't get me the stuff.
I will confess when I came home early tonight I sat in my recliner and thought I would wait until he called to cancel. LOL. It's a dreary rainy day. I'm actually glad I don't have to try to be charming

Thank you DRs Cilla, George & Laura. :)

Back from various and sundried errands. I went to get the motor car washed and was greeted by huge lines. On Friday. At two. Why? Because it's "Happy Hour" every day from two to four now at this car wash. And what happens at happy hour? You save one dollar. So, apparently, the entitled rich of Valley Village and Studio City all show up in their Mercedes, Porsche, Jaguar, etc to save that dollar. Hot damn. I was there about forty minutes. I shall now avoid "happy hour" like the plague and I'll pay the extra dollar.

Every little dollar counts & you have to save somewhere to afford those cars.

Which is exactly what you will read should you go back and glance at today's notes.
I also agree with your note about the inconvenience of having to upgrade the firmware on your Blu-Ray player. [I also have a Blu-Ray Samsung.]
It's one of major the reasons that I still choose DVD over Blu-Ray when buying or renting titles.
I watched it on a Panasonic Blu-ray player that had no trouble at all, but later on tonight, I'll put it in my Samsung 1500 and see what happens. I suspect it won't play even though I have the most recent firmware.
Not that I'm planning to buy or even rent a copy, but I would be curious to know how AVATAR does on your Samsung. Thanks.

I received a reminder notice regarding my upcoming eye check appointment. It is a good thing I decided to postpone it a week. The time on the reminder is earlier than the time on my original appointment card. The doctor needed to change the time so he could leave early & they forgot to check with me. ::)

I had a call from Ron Raines about 90 minutes ago saying he wanted to stop by and borrow some CDs. I told him I had to be outa here by 7, and now I'm leaving. I have no idea where he is.

I sort of asked this of Matt Hough. Now that you've seen Avatar via home "video", do you regret not seeing it in the theater in widescreen and 3D format?

I would rate my bit very high.

RE: Avatar being a bear bones release.
The press release said that it was a bare bone because that way the can have the highest bitrate possible.
And that is b.s.
The reason is that AVATAR will see a second release towards the end of the year with the bonus features AND another release in 2011 with the most recent 3-D technology (and this comes not from idle gossip or chatter, but, from the corporation which I am employed by. . .we are supposed to tell the customers that this is the reason there are no special features if they inquire).

. . .also, the aspect ratio was changed for home video, wasn't it? (of AVATAR).

Well, they may be bastards, but, I did some fast fact-checking and the aspect ratio of 1.78:1 is correct. Therefore, I stand corrected.

RE: Avatar being a bear bones release.
The press release said that it was a bare bone because that way the can have the highest bitrate possible.
All of the stats seem to indicate that the disc is pretty much maxed out because of the high bit rates in both audio and video.

Well, they may be bastards, but, I did some fast fact-checking and the aspect ratio of 1.78:1 is correct. Therefore, I stand corrected.
It was shown at multiple aspect ratios depending on the kind of theater where it played. The 2-D showings were at 2.35:1. The IMAX were 1.78:1. But the film was composed at 1.78:1 according to Cameron. For him, that's the ideal ratio.

Actually, both are correct. The bit rates are maxaed out on the Blu-ray. But it's a barebones release because Cameron didn't have time to get everything prepared he wanted for the bonuses, so Fox has made NO secret that a special edition is coming out for the holidays. And a 3-D version will be released once they feel there are enough of the new design 3-D sets/players to warrant it.
-
Bit rate.

When I went downstairs, I watched (as I intended) the DVD of BARTON FINK.
First I was astonished by the way it looked. All of the cable versions I've seen were pale and grainy. The DVD had very saturated color and only showed normal film grain.
It has obviously been a long time since I saw the movie because there were some scenes I had no memory of at all. Such a treat to see it again.
-
Then I began rewatching season four of BONES. This is the first of the guest intern seasons. Clark Edison and Daisy Wick, the interns in the first two/three episodes are my least favorite interns, and I'd be happy if they NEVER showed up again. (Edison was on last night's new BONES episode much to my displeasure.)
-
On the question of seeing AVATAR in the theater, I can say positively that I have NO regrets about not seeing it in a theater.
-
And now I'm getting very sleepy. I do plan to take my walk tomorrow morning, so I'm going to head down now and go to bed.
Good night!
-
Good evening. That is all.
-
I just watched last night's FLASHFORWARD. Best episode since its premiere. Oh, and Michael Massee has toothpicks for legs. . . .
-
I think Callie knew something.
-
I have returned from my theatre and dinner evening with my friend Chris. I think THE KID, based on Dan Savage's book, is a wonderful musical about a gay couple adopting a baby. The libretto is funny and touching, the lyrics are good, and the score, by my friend Andy Monroe, is very good. The arrangements and the band are excellent, but i must admit I'm bummed that he didn't ask me to orchestrate it.
We stayed after to see my friend Ann Harada, who's quite wonderful in a multitude of roles, as is everyone in the excellent ensemble. Chris Sieber is amazing as Dan Savage; I don't think he leaves the stage in either act. I'm a huge fan of his and his work here is excellent. Jill Eikenberry is very funny as his mother. I really recommend this production by The New Group, and I hope it gets great reviews and a recording. Ann tells me they're opening on May 10.
-
The first quote by the movers several weeks ago when I asked them to package and move everything in the house was well over $5,000. I have spent the last several weeks shlepping stuff day by day to the new house, and today the mover gave me a quote for the few large items left here of $600. So I told Betsy she owes me $4400. ;)
-
Is IMAX really 1.78? I always thought it was square - 4.3
-

I'm going to watch this before I go to bed...meaning very soonly. :)
