TOD: "The Quiet Man" and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon."

I couldn't remember all that Ford had directed, so I went to www.imdb.com. I don't think I know that he directed "Wee Willie Winkie." While there, I found a half-hour film of Ford's available for free download called "Sex Hygiene." It was a WWII VD flick for the troops (sort of the non-musical version of "The Good-Time Girl" from "Over Here!"). I watched a few minutes and was surprised that it was as explicit as it was, not in terms of the sex. Enjoy: http://www.archive.org/details/SEX.HYGIENE

Again, it is quite graphic.

Good morning, all! Today's only Thursday and I would swear it is Friday. And I soound like Gertrude Stein.

Today is another McGlinnventory day, followed by a couple of hours of editing with Mr Skip Kennon. I've got some newly copied scores taken from the Victor Herbert song manuscripts to edit and lyrics to decipher. I got one song back from my copyist Dan and I left the entire vocal line clear because he couldn't read Herbert's handwriting. I deciphered all but one word, and here's the phrase with the missing word:
When the sun in golden splendor
   Sinks behind the distant hills
   Then a __________ sweetly tender
   All my inward beng thrills

The word in question is two syllables. On the score it looks as if it's all composed of small case c's, a's, and s's but it's a word like "feeling" or "passion" with the stress on the first syllable. I'm taking the score to the office to enlarge the line on the copier to see if I can decipher it. I need my thesaurus.

Thursday morning greetings!  Today's a big Vera sale at my local retailer and a friend is on her way from Columbus to go with me.

When I got home from the webinar yesterday, I finished preparing the dinner Richard had started.  After we ate we watched an odd little movie called New York, I Love You followed by the season finale of CSI: NY.  Enjoyed both, but it looks like I missed a lot here on HHW:

Healing vibes to DR td!

Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of John Ford...particularly his westerns.  [STAGECOACH & THE SEARCHERS being exceptions.]

I think he's very over-rated as a director.

Yes, his visuals are stunning and most of his films have memorable moments, but most are also slow moving, over-acted and the "comedy" sequences in them (e.g. the wedding scene in THE SEARCHERS)  are embarrassing.

I would much prefer watching a film directed by Raoul Walsh or Michael Curtiz than one by Ford...or Howard Hawks.

Walsh and Curtiz knew how tell a story.

Sorry your library is behind.  I wonder if it is the publisher who is behind in mailing the books.  So far as I can tell my library doesn't have it yet.  I might ask today out of curiosity.  My brother's library has it, yet his copy isn't available even though it should have been.  He is wondering if the librarians are reading it first.

I am waiting for 3 other books that came out in May.  I request a lot of books so I see how far they are behind. Some books they get the same week. But some books they might only get a month later.

I did see the GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST at costco yesterday when i went to get my pictures. I bet a lot of people are going to Chapters bookstore and sitting and reading it. Although at 500+ pages i think i will savor it when i get it.

And the premiere of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, with Mia Michaels as the new permanent judge. And they are changing the format. There will be 12 allstars (past favorite contestants) that will be paired up with new crop from this year.

Last night I had a bunch of kitchen catastrophes.

I was going to make chicken on the BBQ and mashed potatoes to take to my sister's house.

It was too hot to bake the chicken. So i boiled it and then was going to BBQ it outside. I don't really like the taste of the regular bbq sauce i have, so i was going to make some. I doubled the recipe so i could have enough for the ribs i'm going to make next week.

Anyhow i was steaming broccoli on one burner. I had the potatoes boiling on another burning. I had the chicken boiling on another burner. And i had the sauce on the last burner. I only had a small pot for the sauce. And even though i was standing right there it boiled over and made the biggest mess.

It was weird. I know i had too much in the sauce (it was higher than 3/4 full). But i had stirred it maybe 1 second before and i had left the lid part way off.

It was just so sticky and messy. And then the BBQ ran out of gas in the middle of my grilling! (figures).  Since the chicken was already cooked i just packed it up and grilled it on my grill pan at my sister's house and brushed it with sauce there.

:(

I'm curious what kind of reviews the movie Sex & The City 2 has been getting.

I loved the series and i loved the first movie. I have been looking forward to seeing the sequel for months (and am going on tuesday). But here they let some man who hated the series and the first movie review the second one. And he gave it a bomb rating.

This really made me angry since he knew he would hate it before even seeing it. And to me to give something a bomb means it is complete crap (which i'm sure this movie is not). Plus there are so many people who are looking forward to seeing it and the bomb rating will just make people feel bad.

It's not like he's writing for some itsy bitsy paper. He's writing for the Montreal Gazette (the main English daily here).

Had my oil changed......in the car, that is....and new windshield wipers installed....so I am ready for this afternoon's rain which will begin as usual just as I walk out the door to leave for rehearsal.

This month on TCM, they have been showing Native American films.....the guest host on those nights has been Professor Hanay Geiogamah, director of the American Indian Studies Center at UCLA.  He is one of those insufferable academics who has obviously spent too many years in his ivory tower.  His observations are just short....and sometimes not even that....of racist.  Why did he choose the films that he did if all he wants to do is say how bad they are....TCM needed another guest host for this series who did not have such a large agenda.

Mr Art Linkletter was a big part of my growing up television experience.

People Are Funny was one of my favorite shows, along with Truth OR Consequences and You Asked For It!

It was on PAF that I saw my first computer....the Univac.....it was as big as a house trailer....and Linkletter used it to match up couples for dating.....  And of course Kids Say the Darndest Things books always made me laugh.

Art Linkletter's House Party was a nice change from the afternoon soap operas.....and when he talked to four kids at the end of the show, it was always funny.....

I am recovering.  I had a brief shower so that the bandaging may be changed.

Really?  And who gets the pleasure of "that" task?

I was under the impression that you were on your way over.  (must have been an unsubstantiated rumor).

Actually, no bandaging is necessary now. . .just topical antibiotic ointment.  :)

I went to Blockbuster and bought 3 DVD's for $20 -

Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr
Amelia
Twilight New Moon

None of them got really great reviews.....but they should be entertaining one way or the other.  I didn't buy them in Blu Ray - because who knows if I would have to update my hardware....

I saw all of them on dvd.  Sherlock Holmes was not really what i was expecting. I really like Robert Downey Jr. But I guess I hadn't paid a lot of attention when it was in the theatre. I had no idea it was a monster action packed film. It was okay. And they are filming a sequel. I liked it but didn't love it.

Amelia with Hilary Swank was not bad.  Without spoiling it (in case anybody doesn't know her fate), I wanted more from the ending.  It was interesting to see all her flights (assuming they were accurately depicted).  It was okay but at times it felt more like a documentary and less like a typical movie from now.

Re: New Moon. I really liked this one. So much better than the first movie. I am a big fan of the books. But was not crazy about the first movie. But this one was so much better. It's a shame they are switching directors again for the 3rd film.

I cannot wait to see this movie. I hope it is as good as the first one. It looks fun. I'm trying not to read/watch too many spoilers. The preview had one big  "ah" spoiler moment.

I think the whole cast is going to be on THE VIEW tomorrow.

Why would anyone feel bad because SEX AND THE CITY 2 got a bad review?  You don't really think they give a damn what kind of reviews the film recieves, do you?  SATC became a box office hit the moment the film was announced.

DR Elmore: Is the word "caress"?

Actually caress is a good choice for Victor's handwriting, but the accent is on the wrong syllable. To fit musically it has to be a 2-syllable word with the accent on the first syllable like "trembling" or "passion." Where's my Roget?

The song's about watching the sun go down and the evening mists gather and being visited by a memory of a lovely young lady, "Just a dream of a day gone by." The illegible word has something about the feeling that comes creeping over the singer as the memory comes back. It's something flowery, akin to the following:
   shudder
   trembling
   warmth
   whisper

"lark sings"

I couldn't remember all that Ford had directed, so I went to www.imdb.com. I don't think I know that he directed "Wee Willie Winkie." While there, I found a half-hour film of Ford's available for free download called "Sex Hygiene." It was a WWII VD flick for the troops (sort of the non-musical version of "The Good-Time Girl" from "Over Here!"). I watched a few minutes and was surprised that it was as explicit as it was, not in terms of the sex. Enjoy: http://www.archive.org/details/SEX.HYGIENE

Again, it is quite graphic.

O!M!G!

I watched that film in high school!!!

And why did I happen to watch that movie in high school - and at a private Catholic high school at that!?!?  Well...

My English teacher was also an actor - as well as the Drama Teacher & Director for the school.  One of his most "memorable" gigs - besides getting some prominent background time in the movie "Diner" - was in a series of instructional movies and posters for the U.S. Army. And one of those movies was an update of "Sex Hygiene". -And, yes, the update was actually a bit less explicit than the original.

I believe DR MBarnum may want to check out this article (and accompanying pictorial): ;)

The Fug Girls’ History of the Sword-and-Sandal Ab: From Spartacus to Jake Gyllenhaal (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/05/fug_girls_history_of_abs.html)

"Lark sings." I hope DR Elmore logs back in tonight and sees that.

I won't post any spoilers. I'll just say that as a whole SATC2 was too long for me and lots of it could have been cut.  BUT...there were a few scenes that made it more than worth the price of the tickets.  I laughed and laughed

Back from Amoeba - got a lot of credit, only some of which I used.  Got some new goodies.

That seems to be the general consensus among everyone who's seen the movie so far - including those that really, really liked it.

And regardless of whether I make it to a movie in eight hours, I believe now is the time to sleep...

Goodnight.

DR Elmore: Is the word "caress"?

Actually caress is a good choice for Victor's handwriting, but the accent is on the wrong syllable. To fit musically it has to be a 2-syllable word with the accent on the first syllable like "trembling" or "passion." Where's my Roget?

Carcass?

It was so weird they had Jennifer Love Hewitt hosting the VIEW yesterday. They brought up GHOST WHISPERER but did not mention it was cancelled or if ABC was picking it up. I wonder when they have till to decide.

I saw a bit of that interview, too and wondered if she would say anything.  Everything that I've read has said that it's cancelled...no question. :-\
