Well, you've read the notes, the notes were quite German and filled with Berlin, and now it is time for you to post until the German cows come home.

As for foreign recordings of American (or at least, English language) musicals...some that I have are:

the Israeli cast recording of Annie

the Japanese cast recordings of Beauty and the Beast, Hair (on vinyl); La Cage aux Folles, Scarlett (Gone With the Wind) and South Pacific

the Catalan Into the Woods, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd

the Hungarian and Vienna (in German) recordings of The Phantom of the Opera

the Vienna (in German) A Chorus Line

the Czech Witches of Eastwick

the two French, Prague and Vienna (in German) Les Misérables

the Swedish Chess and Mamma Mia

the German La Cage aux Folles, Hunchback of Notre Dame, A New Brain, The Beautiful Game and Hair

the French and German Wicked

the Madrid and French Man of La Mancha...and others.

I may have posted this before, but I'd love to get recordings of English language shows in the language of the settings...like a(n official) Japanese cast recording of Pacific Overtures, French cast recordings of The Phantom of the Opera, Can-Can, Candide or La Cage Aux Folles, an Italian Passion, a Swedish Little Night Music...things like that.

TOD: I don't have a great many recordings of foreign productions of musicals, but a few include the Parisian "Ali Baba" and "Notre Dame de Paris," neither of which really interested me much. I do love the German recording of something they called "Vodka Cola," a version of Cole Porter's "Leave It to Me!" This was a 1980s update of the Cold War show and it has some lyrics about Ronald Reagan and AIDS added that are brutally funny. But it's the chance to hear the full score with its great songs, "Get Out of Town," "Tomorrow," "From Now On," "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," "Most Gentlemen Don't Like Love" and "I'm Taking the Steps to Russia," that I most enjoy.

The worst international recording I own is a Greek musical called "Pygmalion" that was a disco musical. Listening to it isn't even campy fun. It's just lousy.

Fiddler On The Roof in French
Hair in Japanese

I have some German recordings of several musicals but they are packed away and don't remember what I have. I also have older musicals in other languages.

The only recent one I have is Les Miz in Hebrew

A fun thing to do with Les Cage Aux Folles is to listen to it in the English dub and have the English subtitles on. They don't match! Too different translations.

BTW  two of the English voices were Victor Garber as Albin and Dick Latessa played Renato

TOD:

I'm afraid I don't have much to contribute.  Back in my hs days, someone gave me a copy of MY FAIR LADY in Spanish, which I wasn't all that impressed with.

I have that Columbia studio recording of HAPPY END in German with Lotte Lenya.  Her performances on that are nice, but the chorus pretty much smacks of Kraft Music Hall.

Um...I also have the French recording of LES MISERABLE, but I guess that doesn't count since the show originated in France...

And I have the Japanese SCARLETTE.  THe songs are pretty and the performers are wonderful but it gets frustrating because I want to understand what is being sung.

DR Jane to answer your question from last night. Yes I get cable. And yes i get a lot of extra channels. But the speciality channels in the US (like TNT, USA, Showtime, US Bravo...) are not available in Canada. I am pretty sure that nobody in canada can get these stations (or at least i've never heard of anybody who can get these specific stations).

We get ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CNN and some other american channels. But for some reason not those speciality channels.  Although like i said last night. Most US shows are available here even if they are on those speciality channels. They are just carried on Canadian stations.

Hope that made sense.

Good morning, all! I slept late and I have a crazy day today: the post office, a trip to the NYPL to recopy several scenes from the preproduction libretto of THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, a trip to Toyland to take care of some things I need to do for my colleague Curtis, who flew to London this morning for several weeks of work, and then a memorial service for Larry French, the late husband of my friend Jeanne Lehman, at 4 pm. That's a long day, and that's all i need to worry about. After that, i can come home, check the mail and relax in the AC.

I have little else to report. In the good old days of the LP, I collected foreign cast albums like mad, but these days I simplifiy; I think the only CD of a foreign cast recording I own is a German MY FAIR LADY, which I like very much.

But most shows on these speciality channels are available on other Canadian channels.

We get Top chef, top chef masters, the next food network star on Food network canada.

We get White collar on bravo canada.

We get Royal Pains on Citytv.

We get Project Runway on Slice.

The only problem is that sometimes these canadian stations do not air the shows at the same as in the US. Sometimes they do. And sometimes we are off by a few days or weeks.  But they don't make their schedules in advance it seems.

Monday morning greetings!  I've been for a blood test and to drop another box of garage sale items at the site.  Now, waiting for the call from my mother about the scheduling of the steroid injection she's to have in her hip this week (yee-ouch!) - can't really make any other plans until that's booked.

Today, Richard, Rob, and I are celebrating the 22nd anniversary of our move into this house.

And the word of the day is: BALLETOMANE!

...And that's basically what I was this past Saturday as I found myself happily ensconced in the David Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for two programs presented by the New York City Ballet.

The matinee ended with "Thou Swell" which was a ballet set to a couple of Richard Rodgers' songs.  -It was originally presented as part of a Richard Rodgers evening back in 2003. Well...

WOW!

And I'm not talking about the dancing.  The arrangements of the songs were by Glen Kelly, and the orchestrations were by Don Sebesky and what a truly magical combination that turned out to be.  I truly found the Music a bit distracting - but in a good way.  Some of tunes were treated in a standard ballroom, big band fashion, but others were given some re-harmonizations and re-"feels".  I found myself crying when the pianist started "With A Song In My Heart" in a gentle, music-box waltz... Which then slowly built in a truly lush treatment of "The Song Is You"... Which then faded beautifully back into the waltz.  The few times I did find make the effort to pay attention to the dancers, I did find a good deal of the choreography a bit clichéd and uninspiring.  But, again, that MUSIC!  -I'd truly go back there, buy a cheapo seat in the 4th Ring just to listen to that suite of songs again.

*And, sadly, even though the onstage piano trio was given an acknowledgement during the bows, the conductor and orchestra were not. A true oversight and travesty!

The centerpiece of the evening program at New York City Ballet was the World Premiere of "Call Me Ben" - a new "ballet dramedy" choreographed by Melissa Barak, with a commissioned score by Jay Greenberg, along with a set elements designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. Well...

I got a little worried when I read in the program that the piece included dialog for the dancers.  Then I got even a bit more worried when I read that said dialog was written by the choreographer and one of her friends/dancers.  Well... I'm afraid(?) I actually agree with the New York Times on this one:

Welcome to the Dance, Bugsy Siegel. Care to Say a Few Words? (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/07/arts/dance/07barak.html)

...And another highlight of yesterday's Free for All At Town Hall (http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/events/6/June#Free%20for%20All%20At%20Town%20Hall) program were the two encores that Stephanie Blythe presented.  Both were written by her friend and composer, Alan Smith.  Each year, he writes a new song for her, a setting of a folk song.  She premiered both last year's "present" and this year's.  This year's song was a setting of "How Can I Keep From Singing?".  Her pianist, Warren Jones, ended up introducing this piece - while Miss Blythe stood in the curve of the piano starting to tear up.  He explained that both of them had had some "difficult times" over the past year - Stepanie's mother had recently passed - and that this song seemed very appropriate for the occasion. And it was.  And by the time she finished that last refrain, well... Not only was it a very beautiful setting of the song, but it was also a very truly moving performance.  Hardly a dry eye in the Hall.

My life flows on in endless song:
Above earth's lamentation,
I catch the sweet, tho' far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul--
How can I keep from singing?

What tho' my joys and comfort die?
The Lord my Saviour liveth;
What tho' the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that refuge clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?

I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smooths,
Since first I learned to love it.
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are mine since I am his--
How can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble, sick with fear,
And hear their death-knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near,
How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile,
Our thoughts to them go winging;
When friends by shame are undefiled,
How can I keep from singing?

...And then my friend, Thomas, called me since he managed to snag a few comps to last night's performance of In the Heights, and since I hadn't seen the show in a while, well...

The show is in good shape.  Alas, I think I got spoiled by the original cast, however, Corbin Bleu is a good Usanvi (even if he still hasn't seemed to "be" Usnavi yet).  And judging from the bouquets being thrown on stage last night during the curtain call, as well as a special solo bow, last night was the last night for William B. Wingfield ("Will" from "So You Think You Can Dance?") as Graffiti Pete.

TOD:  I really don't see much point in buying cast recordings in languages I don't understand.  I think I have few British cast recordings, but nothing other than that.

Let me put this forth, as it's one of the reasons that I do enjoy foreign language recordings:
Music, like love, is a universal language; if done properly many shows should be listenable in any language whether they were originally conceived in Esperanto, Dutch, Italian or French.

That said, I'm the guy who has multiple recordings, in many languages of:
BLOOD BROTHERS
TITANIC - the Dutch cast has been mentioned, but there is also a very good recording from Hamburg in German.

In continuing It's An Honor Just to Be Nominated (since I don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning) news, I have been nominated for an OTAS Award for MDing The Producers.  If I get a Drammy nom, I'll be three for three.

Happy news, indeed.

But I'm a lyric kind of guy.

She probably was, but she is British, and at least got to work with the original misguided director. Stritch and Peters may be rehearsing with the stage manager and that may not be too good: one of the reasons Peters sucked as Annie Oakley was because she needed a strong director and she was completely lost. Her performance, to be charitable, was pathetic and inept. Her strongest asset, her singing, was pretty much absent as well. She will probably be the first to approach the role of Desiree as a kewpie doll.

Finished with all my stuff and there was a lot of stuff.  We got everything addressed and stamped, shipped a few packages, ate some lunch, did stuff on the computer, and then got the news we already knew was coming - the new iPhone 4G announcement.  I immediately called both the Apple Store and ATT - and as long as I return my new phone within the thirty days, then I can get the 4G instead, which is exactly what I'm going to do.  They start taking reservations next week and I'll make mine.  If it looks like I'll get mine before the thirty days, I'll return the old one and get the new one at the same time.  If there's ANY doubt, then I'll return the new phone, get my dough back, and then purchase the new one when it comes in.  Luckily, if I have to do the latter, I still have my old iPhone and can activate that until I get the new one.

There were some wonderful moments at this afternoon's memorial service: Rebecca Luker sang a glorious "How Could I Ever Know" from THE SECRET GARDEN, and she and George Dvorsky closed the service with the moving duet from BRIGADOON, "From This day On." My friend Jeanne looked wonderful and the church was packed with people. There were tons of friends at the reception after, and it was great to see so many people I like and care about. I hadn't seen the wonderful conductor Jack Lee in several years and we're going to meet soon for a snack and gossip. I was really happy to see a friend from my dinner theatre actor days, Michael Hayward Jones, with whom I last worked at Goodspeed in 1998. Michael had been in A TALE OF TWO CITIES, which I saw, but we hadn't visited in 12 years. I also saw friends from the NYC Gay Community Marching Band and the Men's Chorus, Donna Lynne Champlin and her new husband, Danny Burstein, who is so wonderful as Luther Billis that I am ecstatic his performance will be committed to video, Mrs Ron Raines aka Dona D Vaughn, mother of my beloved goddaughter, and a lot of others.

I just had a half of a sub and potato salad for dinner, and I will now open today's mail and chill out.

Thanks for the update. But I thought Danny Burstein was married to Rebecca Luther. Am I wrong? Is that over?

Danny is married to Rebecca. Did I imply otherwise? I hope I didn't!

I had a great time visiting with Rebecca, Danny, George, and Donna Lynne and Andy, her new husband whom she met on match.com; I told it was thrilling to see desperation end so happily. Andy is great and he clearly has as wonderful a sense of humor as Donna Lynne.
I read the sentence too quickly. My bad. Sorry.

I read it the same way.  Sorry.

John G., I assumed that you were making a joke!  I knew that Danny and Rebecca were married and was going to post the exact same thing with a winking smilie face, but you posted first, so I didn't.

I see what I did now! Yep, I needed a semicolon after "new husband." I do imply she's married to Danny. Well, duh.

To be punctuationally correct (and anal retentive), I think that this is the way that it should be punctuated:

I also forgot I have the Vienna cast album of THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

DR Kevin H, here's a German music shop specializing in cast recordings. There are a ton of SOUND OF MUSIC recordings from the Netherlands, Japan, Stockholm, Vienna, etc.

http://www.soundofmusic-shop.de/

I have ordered several things from http://www.soundofmusic-shop.de/ ...including that Vienna cast recording of THE SOUND OF MUSIC.  I like it a lot.

It ended being righteously indignant at the city council meeting.  HWHC occasionally works with city depts so can't say what he really thinks about some things....but I can.  It's about a really cool 1887 house being torn down to build a garden.  Anyway, he made his point diplomatically for the group we represent ...  then I was able to follow up  by disclosing what I knew about a questionable process used by the city workers.   I was so much fun!!! I didn't accuse anyone of anything, because my info was all second hand, but I did say i was worried about the process.

I knew we couldnt' save the house, but the city manager said he wouldn't do any more negotiating without including our group

On the way out HWHC and another member of our board thanked me. We were all joking and having a good time.  As we drove off, HWHC and I were side by side at a stop light on a one way.  Me in my Prius he in his big GMC Sienna truck with some really long boards sticking out the back.   I gave him the let's race look and he sped off past me....and all the boards flew out of his truck onto road.  I almost fell out of the car laughing.  I stopped and stood guard til he could get around the corner.  We just stood in the street laughing.  I realize you had to be there, but oh man it was funny

Vivian Sobchack, who is now the head of the UCLA Film Department, was a professor at the University of Utah when I was there.   I took her Film Theory class and she opened the first day by having us write an essay about our favorite film.  I still remember getting my essay back with a big:  WOW!!  CORRECT USE OF A SEMICOLON!!! scrawled across the top.  Years later I wrote Vivian when my Farmer article was published, but she claimed (claimed, I tells ya) not to remember me.  ;)
