Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like caramels, tasty and chewy, and now it is time for you to post until the tasty and chewy cows come home.

As promised, the new Kritzerland limited edition - it's really wonderful, I have to say - three scores on one CD - you know the drill - it's $19.98, directly to paypal using our paypal address, which is kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

ALONG CAME STU

Kritzerland is proud to present three world-premiere releases on one CD:

STU PHILLIPS – THREE SCORES
A Time to Every Purpose, The Name of the Game is… Kill, The Meal

To say Stu Phillips has done it all would be an understatement – firstly, he has done it all, and secondly, he’s still doing it.   He’s been a jack-of-all-trades from the beginning, and the amazing thing is he did all trades equally well, whether it was musical directing for people like Jimmie Rodgers or Chris Connor, producing and receiving gold records for such classics as “Blue Moon (The Marcels), “Johnny Angel” (Shelley Fabares), “Goodbye, Cruel World” (James Darren), producing (at Colpix) other artists like Nina Simone, Vince Edwards, The Chad Mitchell Trio, The Ronettes (Stu was there first, pre-Phil Spector), creating, producing, and arranging the amazing The Hollyridge Strings (twelve albums in all – at one time three of the albums were in the Billboard Top 20), or writing songs with various co-writers that were recorded by the likes of Tammy Wynette, B.B. King, George Hamilton, Dino, Desi, and Billy, The Sandpipers, The Electric Prunes, Nancy Sinatra, and on and on.  And, of course, composing music for television and films.

The scores for these three films are really terrific and each is very different.  Each score is orchestral.  For A Time to Every Purpose, the orchestration relies heavily on strings, with a solo harmonica and solo flugelhorn the other featured colors. Acoustic guitars are used extensively for the underlying rhythm patterns and it’s very lyrical and beautiful.  In addition to the orchestra, The Name of the Game is… Kill features one of the earliest uses of the Moog snythesizer on a film score, along with other electronic instruments and effects including electric cellos and an electrified harpsichord.  It’s a strange and percussive score that really works in the film and as a listening experience.  Finally, The Meal has bits of a Rachmaninoff prelude (#6), which Stu has set beautifully for orchestra, part of an original piano concerto composed by Phillips, and some marvelous orchestral writing, predominantly for strings and piano.   It all adds up to a great Stu Phillips triple bill.

Some of Stu Phillips’ early TV work includes The Donna Reed Show, Gidget, and The Monkees, and film scores include Danny Kaye’s The Man From The Diner’s Club, Ride the Wild Surf, Hells Angels on Wheels, and the ultra-classic cult film, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.  But it was his work in the 1970s that made him legendary.  In 1974 he began a seven-year run at Universal Studios, composing the music for some of the most beloved shows of that or any era – The Six Million Dollar Man, McCloud, Quincy, Switch, The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Knight Rider, and many others.  Then, at 20th Century Fox, he did an astonishing ninety-six episodes of the Lee Majors series, The Fall Guy.  Other TV shows include Spiderman, Chicago Story, Medical Center, and Along Came Bronson.  In the last four years, there have been three hit hip hop/rap versions of the Knight Rider theme by Busta Rhymes, Timbaland & Magoo, and Panjabi MC with Jay-Z.  Which just goes to show you, when you’re cool, you’re cool.  And Stu has always been the coolest.

The three scores are presented in their original mono, mastered from Stu’s own masters, which were in excellent condition.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping

CD will ship by the second week of August – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I just ordered the CD!  I really liked a lot of the 1970s TV shows that he's scored, but I don't think that I've ever heard of these three movies. :-\

I can't wait to hear it, though!

Monday morning greetings!  We have a busy week, preparing for and then hosting (in Lima) the first synod of the Diocese of Mid-America of the Anglican Province of America.  Clergy and delegates from several states will be in attendance, along with a couple of bishops.  It's a big deal and quite an honor for Fr. Richard's church.  I have some cooking and hospitality responsibilities, but mostly my job will be to keep an eye on Richard and make sure he gets some rest.

My favourite monster movie of all time is THE ISLAND OF LOST SOULS with Charles Laughton playing H.G. Wells' Dr. Moreau.  The whole implication of Kathleen Burke as the Panther Woman is perversely chilling.  Bela Lugosi may be at his best as The Sayer of the Law.  The recitation of The Law is great.  The final assault on the House of Pain brilliant.  Best version ever made of this book...probably better than the book, which I've never read because I don't want to ruin the movie

This isn't about monster movies per se - but the monster itself.  Like the Frankenstein monster - or the Wolf Man.  Or Mommie Dearest.

DR Cillaliz, THE  NEXT FOOD NETWORK STAR starts here on thursday. So i guess we will be a few weeks behind you. I never understand why they can't air them at the same time as in the US (they sometimes do but not usually).

My favorite Food Network show (well it's not on the Food Network in the US) is TOP CHEF. But unfortunately they will not be airing TOP CHEF DC (in Canada) until August. :(

I've never had much success with a professional cleaner for major jobs.  I suggest interviewing a few.  Honestly, I have never found anything that really worked well.  When we replaced our bedroom carpet we had a sealer put on the floor to block the odors & then got a special pet mat.  If you are lucky it wasn't enough to soak into the carpet mat & the cleaning will remove the odors.

Keith is the one dealing with the stress & working outside.  Right off there was a problem.  They were supposed to show up with a much larger shovel only the tractor was broken.  Chances are what was to be a one day removal job will take two days. They have hardly made a dent.  I looked outside a while ago and there were 5 men & one little dog.  I think the dog belonged to the guy with the dump truck.  The dog &  truck are gone and there is a new, empty truck out there.

DR Dan(the Man) and other readers - Nancy Pearl, the Seattle librarian who invented the one city/one book program concept has a great rule of thumb about finishing books.  She says life is too short to slog through books you're not enjoying and there are too many good books to spend time reading ones you don't like.  Her advice is to give a book 50 pages and, if it hasn't grabbed you, move on.  What I really like is that she says if you're over 50 years old, subtract your age from 100 and read that many pages before giving up on a book.

Speaking of books I had to read first, DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY was one of them.  I asked DS Bryan who now lives in Chicago, if he had read the book.  Good timing as he just began it.  He reminded me that Daniel Burnham designed the historical building in Portland that Bryan lived in.

To All You Fans of the Series of books that started out with THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO-

Pleae be advised that the second film in that series will be coming to Movie Theatres the beginning of July- THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE

The First film I thought was excellent and Got Excellent Reviews. The Second Film did not receive Excellent Reviews(IMDB).

However, I am Looking forward to seeing The Second Film.

Both films were already released here. It is very odd to me that the first one would get excellent reviews but the second one wouldn't. They are extremely similar. They have the same actors, follow the stories in the same ways, have similar amounts of violence.  I would think either you would like them both or hate them both.

I can't imagine that scenario, but then again I'm always shocked at what offends people.  And I'm bored to tears by it.  Offended?  Speak up, don't run away like a twit (not talking about Jose here).  Tone is always hard to ascertain on message boards, so occasionally feathers get ruffled - so what, get over it like an adult.  That's what I'M talkin' about.

So, I have no idea what Jose's deal is - he'll be back or he won't.  I will say that not responding to people's e-mails is a little not nice.

I'm back and the dog above me has been barking nonstop since I returned.

Fed Ex arrived rather early, I took care of a problem concerning missing lyrics for Cinderella's prince, and I had a phone call from Joshie, who's finishing up the new scores and parts for MTI for ANYONE CAN WHISTLE.  He had a questions about the Exit Music and wanted my advice, so I went up to City Center to make a visit and spend an hour with my adopted son. We resolved the question to our satisfaction and I visited for about an hour, gossiping, talking about work, and enjoying our company. After that, he walked downtown to meet his friend Kirk for lunch and I caught the No. 7 bus home.

Now I'm enjoying the AC and wishing evil things on the cute dog who lives over me.

Jane, I do have odo-ban. That's what I initially used on the carpet.  I've decided to call a professional cleaner. It's not that big a room and hopefully they can get it out.  In the meantime, I closed the door to the room....Callie looked embarassed so I think i found the culprit

I went to the pet store this noon and got a "Stink finder" aka black light.  I also got some Miracle Pet or something like that formulated for cat urine.   So, before hiring a professional, I'm going to try one more time.  Of course it has to be dark for the stink finder to work so I would pick the longest day of the year to buy it, lol

Yeah, I think that's it.  I've actually decided to use the Odo-ban one more time before opening the Nature's Miracle.  Now that I have the stink finder, I may be able to take care of it.  Yes it's an exzyme cleaner.  If I need to use it I'll try it next.  This is a pain in the butt.  That room may now be off limits to felines.

Are you using the Odo-ban concentrate?  You might need to use less water.  I use to use it straight.  I suppose the soda water mixed it up some.

DR Cillaliz,

If a cat sprayed, it might not be in the carpet but on the wall. Whenever I have witnessed a cat spraying it was always spraying out against a wall or object, not down. So you could go around the perimiter of the room with the enzyme spray and see if that helps.

Unfortunately too much experience.  All four of our cats had urinary problems.  I wasn't joking about using your nose. ;D

If you suspect cats from the outside have started this you might want to check outside the sliding door for odors.  If you find any spray the area with a cat repellent.

If your cat/cats continue with this I suggest talking to your vet about running a sterile urine test.

Wonderful close ups of the kittens.  I suspected the blue eyes were a reflection from the camera.

Actually, you might try the enzyme cleaner, leaving it in.  Once it has dried out then try the OdoBan again.  Do you have soda water you can use to fiz it up first?

Are you using the Odo-ban concentrate?  You might need to use less water.  I use to use it straight.  I suppose the soda water mixed it up some.

LOL,. you obviously have experience in this area.   I'll have to get some soda water.   First I have to wait for night fall to use the stink finder.

Well, I think I've figured out at least part of it.  There is a window up high in this room that is even with ground level - where the cats and they neighbor dog sometimes sit.  It looks like one of them sprayed on the window.  I cleaned that and the carpet below it.  I won't know if I got it all until after dark when I use the Stink Finder, but it's better.  This actually makes me happy.  I would rather have it be in reaction to something than a medical issue.

On the upside, the stray cats haven't been around lately and the neighbor dog hasn't either.  So, I'm paying a lot of attention to both girls and think I may be able to get rid of the smell tonight.

The room needed to be cleaned anyway, so this may turn out to be a good thing after all....

I'm feeling very crabby this morning.  I had a night of tossing and turning and 6:00 am came way too soon.  I couldn't stop sweating after my shower.  The escalators at both PATCO Speed-Line train stations were not working.  The train to Conshohocken was filled with inane cell phone chatter.  And I'm stuck trying to muddle through SCHULZ AND PEANUTS which is not only a very heavy book (forget about this one, DR Jane!), but is also a depressing account about about a very disturbed man.  Charles Schulz was one of my boyhood heroes and this is very difficult reading for me...

On the other hand, I'm healthy, I have a job and my house is intact, so what do I really have to complain about?...

The American Masters bio on Schulz was very good....definitely not a feel-good film but very insightful.

Jane, I do have odo-ban. That's what I initially used on the carpet.  I've decided to call a professional cleaner. It's not that big a room and hopefully they can get it out.  In the meantime, I closed the door to the room....Callie looked embarassed so I think i found the culprit

Do not put Odoban on your collard greens. That is all.

DR Cillaliz,

If a cat sprayed, it might not be in the carpet but on the wall. Whenever I have witnessed a cat spraying it was always spraying out against a wall or object, not down. So you could go around the perimiter of the room with the enzyme spray and see if that helps.

Thanks MBarnum.  The weird thing is they are spayed females, they don't usually spray,at least that's what I believed

I've known several female kitties who did that. My mother's Siamese would jump into the bathtub and spray. At least it was easy to clean up!

What codes are you trying to prevent being enforced?

Code enforcement thinks my rose campion plants are weeds when they stop blooming. I had a nice conversation with the officer while I was in NY and promised to cut them down. I had hoped to wait until they were ready to re-seed because I share the seeds, but some annoying neighbor apparently doesn't get it. Well, they should be happy now.

I don't think that was the exciting news that Vixmom mentioned. Perhaps it was my dramatic week last week, in which I:

1. Had the blame placed on me for the Mercer film going over budget, even though I started in Oct. at the director's request and he didn't even show up until MARCH, and had to defend myself for doing nothing wrong...

2. Got theatrical distribution for our film

3. Was let go of my steady Closer gig after 5 seasons as they go from 6 editors on 6 shows to 3 editors on 6 shows (good luck with that!) because Conan is gonna blow the Turner budget and they had to make cutbacks

4. On our first festival a week ago (Breckenridge) I won the editing award. We premiered our film in NY to the investors and folks who worked on it on Thursday and it was the first time I felt like a rock star for bringing home the gold.

5. Saw 2 shows in NY, LEND ME A TENOR with Tony Shalhoub (got to reconnect with him and he told us how much he liked the film we did with him...he was the voice of Sacco in our film SACCO AND VANZETI) and the WEST SIDE STORY revival (Larry was right on that one)

6. And most importantly, had breakfast with our own DR Elmore!

DR Jane - After having those 2 trees taken out of our backyard, I sympathize with you.  It's stressful having major work done around your house, with the confusion and inconvenience it creates.

Hopefully, what you're paying is the cost is for the whole job and not by the hour. :-\

I've been asked to direct a big benefit at Town Hall in October - sort of based on Lost in Boston - you know, cut songs - and I've said yes.

Congrats!

They are not weeds; they are wildflowers.

I have tried that argument, along with "native grasses" - all to no avail.

They'll call it "George's Place".
