Title: OBSERVATIONS

Well, you've read the notes, you've observed the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently observing the human condition and saying, "Moo."

TOD: Observations on my city? Well, I'll limit it to the dining scene, since that is what my focus has been for the last 11 years. I have seen San Antonio grow and now wane in its culinary variety. There isn't another city in Texas with a restaurant scene quite as vital and tasty. Yet the economy has made too many restaurateurs cut corners in terms of quality, and prices are often too high. There are some great chefs out there, but the rewards all too often come from the ethnic restaurants rather than the places with reputations.

This September, the third branch of the Culinary Institute of America opens. We'll be graduating a new generation of chefs, and hopefully things will pick up so that there will be homes for many of them.

The rest of the city seems to be on a similar parallel, actually. Some of the great names, including Toyota, have experienced economic problems, as well. But thankfully, the job scene is one of the better ones in the nation. And a new military hospital expansion is said to be adding up to 50,000 jobs in the near future. So, here's hoping we come of out this soon and in better shape than ever.

Morning all.

Anthony is still asleep. It's our last day in Annapolis. We will leave around noon or 1pm and head back to New York.

The final performance went very well and the closing party was great fun.

Unfortunately, it all has to end and I have to go back to work.

That's all for now.

I hope that London will be in my mailbox when we get home.

TOD:

As much as I miss the "energy" of being in Los Angeles, in many ways I'm glad I'm not there any longer.

Hollywood has been going downhill for decades, and this "revitalization" hasn't done anything to help matters.  Even when I left 1 1/2 years ago, the vagrants were still about, making the place look like a slum.  A glitzy slum, but a slum.

When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1963, one of my enjoyable activities was strolling along Hollywood Blvd. on a Friday night.  It was an exciting place where things still happened.  Not any longer.

All it is now is a discarded memory.

On the other hand, the last time I went back to my hometown (Seattle) in 2004, I hardly recognized the place.

In fact, I even got lost trying to find the house that I grew up in.

I guess that everything changes...and not always for the better.

Many things to do today - and then I shall work all afternoon on the Act One Review of My. Lines.

Because tonight we are doing said Act One.

MR BK's notes remind me of why I don't attend much theater anymore - some of it is of course the SHOWS being produced or brought into town.....but much of it is because of the behavior of the audience.  Same reason I don't go to the movies.

I guess my observation is that people in most social situations today act like they would rather be with anyone else and anywhere else than they are - and that YOU and YOUR life are completely unimportant - in fact YOU don't even exist.

My observation about Indianapolis is that we are completely SPORTS-OBSESSED and that any and all public money that those private corporations need to keep those teams in town is available - to the detriment of schools, libraries, police & fire protection, and public works.

Good morning, all! I have a lot of errands to run before I end up at the NYU Dental Clinic. Yesterday, I deposited a check for over a thousand dollars in my Citibank account, but I'm thinking this morning that I used a deposit slip for my Sovereign Bank account. My first erramd is a trip to Citibank to see f I can correct this disaster before I am overdrawn in all bank accounts. Oy!

After that, i have some music to deliver and some work at Toyland, which will put me on 27th Street for most of the morning. After I leave there, I will head down to 23rd Street for a crosstown bus to get me to my 5 pm appointment at the Dental Clinic to have the lesion on my tongue removed. I'm hoping I get a prscription for pain, and, if I do, I'll stop by a pharmacy on my way home.

That's my day.

Well, BK, everytime I get nostalgic for LA, I should just read your post today.  The manners and what is happening inside theatres I have observed for many years now.  I loathe miked sound, visible head mics, cell phone dependency, audiences who don't understand proper applause and reaction in a theatre.  I particularly hate shouting, whooping, and what's become de rigeur standing ovations.

Oddly, enough, I was at the theatre Saturday night in my old home city, Cincinnati.  What I miss in it is what I now miss in most cities.  Shops.  Shopping areas have condensed everywhere.  What you now seem to have are lots of restaurants and hotels, but not much else for folks to do when they are staying and eating downtown.  And, of course, they can't even go to the movies, because all the big movie palaces are gone as well.

Much of this, of course, has to do with flight to the burbs and malls; but I think it also has to do with the internet where people are buying more and more online.  The department store we regularly shopped at is now lofts.  More people are living down town with less to do downtown; I notice this in Lexington as well.  Unless you want to go out every night for dinner or are into bar-hopping, there's really not much to do.

Cincy still has several downtown stage theatres and a great library, but it shops and attractions used to spread out for blocks, now if you go a block past Fountain Square, you won't find much.  I used to have three used bookstores on Main street, now only one is left.

One final bastion remains:  The House of Adam.  A men's clothing store.  We used to refer to it as the House of Pimps, for that's what the style of clothes looked like.

Stopping in to say hello then off to work.  I spent 1 1/2 hours cleaning up limbs and the mess left by the storm last night. That big red cell went right through here.  It was raining and blowing so hard (over 60 mph) that I couldn't see the road out side my house.  So I took the cats and went to the basement.  When I came up, I saw a big limb down in front of the house  (a 6-7 inch in diameter limb and really long) with lots of smaller limbs.  The apple tree (a little tree) was at a 45 degree angle.

Anyway, I didn't go anywhere, they told us not to drive around because of downed trees and power lines.  I didn't lose power, but the cable went out and when I called in they said it was city-wide and no time frame for it to go back, so I went to bed.

This morning I got up at 5:30 am and was outside by 6:15 AM clearing more of the downed limbs.  I stopped at 7:30 AM and cleaned up for work.  We're sort of closed today, Edith is gone. I have an appointment at 10:00 and a pretrial conference this afternoon.  I have a lot to do to today, but I'm pooped!  We have a heat advisory today. Oy!

Better get to the office.

TOD:

The Manhattan neighborhood in which I live (which has been referenced in musicals by Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, and Jason Robert Brown - see if you can figure it out) has gone through several cycles of change in my 35 years, both good and bad:

* Early 1980s - people fled to the suburbs or outer buroughs in droves, as drug use, muggings, and vandalism escalated.

* Late 80s/early 90s - The hemorrhaging slows a bit, as a transient population of recent college grads and newlyweds stay for 3-5 years before moving on. This does not much help some of the established communities, particularly the German Jewish community which was a neighborhood mainstay during the 50s and 60s. A half-dozen synagogues close and/or merge with each other to stay functional.

* Mid/late 90s - Crime reduction and relatively affordable housing starts drawing in the artistic crowd: musicians, actors, and fine artists, particularly ones with families, move in in droves. Local parks and playgrounds get makeovers. Housing prices start to rise.

* Early '00s - A trickle of young Modern Orthodox Jewish singles turns into a stream, then a flood. One once-dying synagogue in particular benefits from the newcomers, seeing its membership increase nearly 10-fold in a five-year period. Other professionals move in as well, particularly clustered around one desirable school district. Housing prices move into the unaffordable range. As commercial landlords raise rents, whole blocks of mom-and-pop stores close down, to be replaced by chain stores, "upscale" boutiques, and fusion restaurants.

* Mid '00s - present: Idiotically greedy developers start building "luxury" condominiums in the working-class and slum parts of the neighborhood. Some projects run out of money during development, leaving ugly holes in the ground, while others get completed, leaving ugly, half-empty buildings in their wake. Rental prices hit the "absurd" point, causing a repeat of the early '80s flight to the 'burbs and outer boroughs, albeit for different reasons.

TOD:

Salem's downtown area is actually a very busy place. Lots and lots of assorted locally owned shops, a huge used book store, several antique stores, some highly thought of restaurants, furniture stores, several department stores including J.C. Penneys.

Our current mayor has worked tirelessly in revitalizing our downtown, and it is really quite nice.

There is also a wonderful waterfront area complete with a carousel.

The north end of downtown had gotten a little scuzzy, but new buildings have been put up which contain an independent movie theatre, offices, shops, and apartments up above. It all is shaping up very nicely.

Salem does not have as much culture nor recognition as Portland, but it is working on it. One thing that has really helped is the huge Independent Film Festival we have each year.

WRT audiences & theater etiquette:

* I personally don't care if the person next to me dresses up or down to go to the theater, so long as he follows a decent personal hygiene regimen.

* I expect different standards of decorum at different shows. I accept a certain amount of audience noise at a Disney family show (although my experience has inevitably been that the children are significantly better behaved than the parents).

* The ridiculous sound blasting has gotten completely out of hand. Does nobody care about lyrics anymore?

* Rhythmic curtain call clapping is a phenomenon that has been going on for at least 20 years, to the best of my recollection. I wouldn't mind the over-enthusiastic audience reaction so much if at least once in a while we were allowed to boo a particularly bad performance (ask me about Civil War sometime...). Look, with prices getting as ludicrous as they have, any audience member who shows up expects to see something ovation-worthy...

But it will be ketchup and mayonnaise time this week, as there is a lot to do before the DP's mom and his niece and nephew arrive from PA next Sunday for a week of being a "tourist" in CA.  LA, Disneyland and SF (including Alacatraz) are on the agenda.

And FINALLY, I can concentrate on Sunset Blvd which auditions in 3 weeks.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is one of those shows that went to hell in a hurry.  When I saw it, I thought that the sound quality was incredible--only "Life" seemed to get on the loud side.  But from what I later heard, the dial was routinely turned up to 11 at every performance.  I don't understand why this show in particular feels the need to be LOUD...

I've just returned from following someone who looked to be casing our street. He drove all through our neighborhood, and would pull over when he noticed I was following him. We've had a lot of break-ins lately in our 'hood. This guy pulled over 4 or 5 times and drove through most of the streets around us; it was obvious he wasn't lost. My damage:

Crawfish & Mushroom Etoufee
Blackened Alabam Catfisha served with spicy crab grits and garlicky green beans.
"Bourbon and Coke" -- a chocolate Coca-Cola cake with a caramel ganache and served with creme fraiche.

OOF-tah!  I'm stuffed.  I'm almost miserably full.

In today's notes, BK puzzles:

Quote
When did the entire city of Los Angeles and environs completely subvert the parking meter situation, changing what used to be a six o’clock cut-off time to eight o’clock and thereby making it almost impossible to go anywhere? What sickening, stupid idiot made THAT decision and how can we get whoever it is fired?

Answer: The stupid idiots were youre elected City Council representatives:

NAVIGATE HOLLYWOOD (http://www.navigatehollywood.com/drivepark/meters)

Quote
As of July 2008, parking meter rates and hours of operation were adjusted to better match the heavy demand for parking in Hollywood and throughout Los Angeles. Currently, the revenue generated by the estimated 40,000 city parking meters in $20 million. The net increase from the rate hike is estimated to generate an additional $18 million annually.

Please Note:  New overhead signs indicating the time limit and hours of operation will be posted, beginning on Saturday, March 28. Posting efforts will continue through April 12.

Rates
Parking meter rates throughout the city of Los Angeles have been adjusted to a minimum of $1-per hour, with some rates up to $2, $3 and $4–per–hour. Please note: In Hollywood, parking meter rates do not exceed $2-per-hour.

Hours of Operation
The parking meter hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. In entertainment and shopping districts, such as Hollywood, where the demand for parking extends even later into the night, parking meters operate from 8 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday nights; and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Variations from these hours are planned in observance of peak hour restrictions, valet services, religious services, etc.

All residents reap the consequences of the politicians elected by a minority of the eligible voting population.

Lawry's Lemon Pepper - only 80 mg Sodium per serving...

Land O Lakes Light Butter (only 5gm of fat)

or...top with a tasty chopped mushroom sauteed in olive oil

I have found that I can use Lawry's Lemon Ppper ( but none other) in place of salt on almost all my veggies even sliced tomatoes.

I am tired. It's been a long day.  I ended up having an immigration hearing that wasn't on the calendar.  Luckily they called to tell me it would be late so I was able to get my client to the office.  There really must have been something distracting Edith, she doesn't usually miss putting things on the calendar.  I don't think it was intentional

After your move will you feel safer walking around your new neighborhood?  Will you walk to work?

The "natural cheese" flavor, while only 125 mg Sodium/tsp., doesn't really have much flavor.

To answer the question about Donna McKechnie in the London Promises Promises, she opened the show and played her role for four weeks. To quote Miss McKechnie: "Michael aparently thought that it would be in his best interest to have me open in London to show off his choreography" So it would depend when the show was recorded. The show opened October 2, 1969. Was the show recorded during the first four weeks or after? My source says that she was on the recording.

TOD

We live in an unincorporated area of Sussex County (entire county has a population  about equal to Burbank CA; the entire state has a population (900,000) less than most major cities

Rehoboth Beach, itself, is an 1.25 square mile incorporated beach community of  about 2000 permanent residents. In summer, the city population swells to about 25,000 – and last Fourth of July the beach/boardwalk had an estimated 100,000 viewing the fireworks.

The city proper has a couple of dozen nice owner-operated full-service restaurants, some with near-celebrity status chefs

The entire area has only one motion picture theater -but it is a 14 screen (about half are 3D) multiplex which shows the latest film releases (weekend block busters openers get a special Thursday evening midnight preview). Tickets are $7.50 matinee, $10.00 evening. The theatres are spotlessly clean, the staff friendly and attentive, the patrons well-behaved. I suspect the fact that the complex draws viewers from all over the area holds down the type of gang-related peer pressure we find in many urban areas.

The download/boardwalk area is a very pedestrian friendly (but you do have to pay up to $1.50/hour to park – meters are universal (they are the cities major source of income).

The area has a few very active little theatre groups and a couple of popular cabaret-type venues and a downtown church was recently converted to an arts center, including a good sized auditorium that hosts children theatre and a variety of direct-from-vegas acts like:

The downtown is filled with lots of specialty stores and art galleries; the highway is lined with one of the east coasts largest Outlet Malls (and no sales tax!). We have a major craft brewery, a local winery, and we host a majestic tall-ship.

The area lacks for two things – no major bookseller, and no major electronic store outlet (we have to make do with WalMart).

The area does have its downside – as a major tourist location we suffer through humongous traffic jams at certain times and do have to learn to tolerate some pretty rude visitors at time. Unfortunately, there is only one thoroughfare – and it does double duty as a major six-lane highway and the only road through town. It is a major choke point – god help us if we ever have to do a major evacuation – there are only  four ways off the entire Delmarva peninsula – and two of them to the south (The Chesapeake Bay Bridge – to Annapolis, Baltimore, Wash), and the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel – to Norfolk) are both subject to closure in heavy weather, so that leaves only two exits left, one to the west and one to the north.

LOL as soonas  Dan mentioned hia "crotchal area" I flashed back to the Vixter's birth....  one fellow I never met before waltzed ina and lifted my sheet and took a long look at my (not so much anymore) privates... I asked if there was a sign outside inviting everyone in for a free peek  - and suggested that perhaps an introduction might be inorder

Edi - as a member of the church's real estate committee I am inthe process of finding homes to hav our realtor show us - I have been using the Multiple Listing service to locate homes and then I drive past them, slowly, sometimes several times and then I drive slowly around the neighorhood trying to decide if I like the look of the neighborhood and whetehr it is worthwhile making an appointmemtn to see the inside of the house....

perhaps your "caser" was merely a house hunter

at least one can hope

I had a day...But I've decided to always look on the bright side of life....so I will only focus on the fun I had tracking down some info on a home on the red tag list to try to intervene early and save it.  The chair of the commission and I are having fun and making some real progress on a few of the houses.   He says he likes my energy, lol.  I just like working with someone who has as much fun with it as I do.

Thanks for the info, BK.  Castalbums.org (http://castalbums.org/shows/Promises_Promises/282) doesn't list a 1971 or 72 recording, just the 1968 released in 1970 (and the 2002).  Of course, the site only gets updated when people who've signed up add recordings that they have.

There is nothing on the calendar tomorrow....but then there was nothing much on the calendar today. I was very lucky to be at the office when the call came in about an immigration heraing I didn't know about.  I'm focusing on the fact that I got the call and got my client to the hearing in time, not on the fact that it wasn't on my calendar even though the order was in the file.  I'm sure that wasn't intentional.   No harm no foul...bright side of life

Well, it sure did a number on the Game Warden - we haven't heard from him for a while.

I haven't completely adopted it....but there is the line  "Life's a piece of sh(*, when you think of it" so even the bright side of life leaves some room for complaining

Driving that far to hit someone in the head is a waste of gas...I'd figure out a reason to make them come to you - then hit em in the head ;)

Well, obviously they're incorrect about 1968 since the B'way version didn't open until December of that year - the likely year is 1970 - although likelier would be 1971.

After your move will you feel safer walking around your new neighborhood?  Will you walk to work?

Oh yes, it is much closer to work. My neighborhood will consist of two other old apartment buildings and a bunch of state office buildings. I just have to walk across the park to the capitol and then down to my office.
